Barbara Lammers, 83 Published:
Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements. Barbara, 83, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012 in St. Michael, Minn. Barbara Lammers was born March 4, 1929 in Atkinson, Ill., the only child of Russell and Alice (Steiner) Krakliow. On Aug. 9, 1947 she married Harvey Hans Lammers in Burlington, Iowa. They farmed in the Lime Springs and Chester areas. They later owned and operated the Wheel Inn in Chester for 23 years, retiring in 1993. After retirement they enjoyed traveling and spending several winters in Arizona. Barbara enjoyed many activities: shooting pool, playing cards and dancing she was also inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame. Barbara is survived by two children: Sue Cartney of Otsego, Minn. and Larry (Pam Edwards) Lammers of Chester; a daughter-in-law: Barb Lammers of Cresco; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday morning. Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartvlle handled the arrangements. Mildred, 98, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012 of natural causes at Olmsted Medical Hospital in Rochester, Minn. where she had been a patient since last Wednesday. Mildred Ada Eberling was born June 16, 1914, in Howard County, Iowa the daughter of Fred and Frieda (Meyer) Bigalk. She grew up on the family farm, attended rural schools and graduated from Cresco High School in 1932. On May 2, 1936, she married Lloyd W. Eberling in Cresco. They became the parents of one daughter, Constance Rae. They farmed in Albion and Vernon Springs Townships and in 1972 following her father's death and the failing health of her husband, they moved to Cresco to care for her invalid mother. Mr. Eberling died on August 12, 1975. Mildred was baptized, confirmed and married in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco and she belonged to its Ruth Circle, was past president of its E.L.C.W. and was also a member of the choir for several years. She enjoyed music and was occasionally asked to play violin or piano for different programs. For a number of years she was employed at the Leuthold Ready to Wear Store. After retiring from there, she did Home Health Care for several Cresco residents. Mildred moved to Stewartville in 2003 to live near family. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, playing cards, playing her violin and traveling, but her main interest was always her family. She loved making quilts and their favorite foods for them, but best of all was just being together. Mildred is survived by four grandchildren: Marcia (Brian) Ferson of Stewartville, Linda Noack of Plymouth, Minn., Bruce (Kristie O'Brien) Johnson of Minneapolis, Minn., and Janell (Dan) Schefers of Rochester, Minn.; seven great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; son-in-law: Glen Johnson of Peterson, Minn.; and one sister: Lucile Floyd of Stewartville. She was preceded in death by her husband: Lloyd; her daughter: Constance "Connie" Johnson in 2008; her parents; and twin infant sisters.

Gunhus was born Nov. 25, 1936 in Cresco, Iowa, the son of Ted and Evelyn (Ratcliffe) Gunhus. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1955. After graduation, Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force. On Aug. 10, 1958 he married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Lybbert. Jim was the proud father to four children, Jim (Jennifer) Gunhus, Julie (Mark) Schneider, Ted Gunhus, and Candace Riha. He was a loving and involved grandfather to eight grandchildren, Dustin Zuck, Ashley Zuck, Alex Gunhus, Amanda Gunhus, Chandler Gunhus, Logan Schneider, Grace Gunhus, and Langley Riha. Jim retired from John Deere in 1999 and moved to the Omaha, Neb. area to be with his family. His love of sports stayed constant and he enjoyed his time on the golf course. He was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Papillion, Neb. Survivors include his wife Sharon; their children; grandchildren; his sister: Darlene Bronner; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother: Orville; and his sister: Marcella Creger.
Donald Vick, 64

Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah handled the arrangements. Donnie, 64, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City. Donald Gene Vick was born Nov. 19, 1947 in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Vernon and Mildred (Keck) Vick. Donnie attended Decorah Community Schools and received his GED in the US Army, when he served from Jan. 22, 1965 to Jan. 21, 1971. On Oct. 31, 1970, he married Ila Mae Houdek in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Donnie welded at Iowa Manufacturing, worked at Wilson Packing Plant, and for Les Hanneman Construction in Cedar Rapids. He then drove truck for Little Jenny's Trucking and Bill Wilson Trucking in Cedar Rapids, and then for Ron Hilton Trucking in Fairfax. Donnie was an owner-operator, hauling general freight from 1978 until the present. He was a member of the Clarence Bily American Legion Post #467, in Spillville, where he always enjoyed helping with the fish fry. He also liked to donate to the Ridgeway Fire Department, First Responders and to the School. Donnie enjoyed treasure hunting with Craig Ellingson, loved buying on "K-bid", buying and trading cars, where his motto was "buy high - sell low"! He will be missed by his family, where he often called Ila his "Cupcake" or "Bride" and will miss going to Protivin on Wednesday for chicken with "Baby" and going fishing with this grandchildren and fishing trips to Canada. married Barb Hemann in 1974 and they
later divorced. In 1988 he married Diane
Bruess. Bill enjoyed life and was a dedicated family man. He enjoyed cooking, taking care of his flowers and feeding and watching his birds. He enjoyed spending time with friends, especially his "Deer Camp" buddies and his son, Chris. He also enjoyed hunting, mowing the cemetery in Protivin and watching his son Chris play sports and watching the Green Bay Packers. Bill is survived by his wife, Diane; a daughter: Carrie (Stuart) Ridge of San Diego, Calif.; two sons: Corey and Chris of Protivin; two grandchildren: Piper and Tristan Ridge; one brother: Mike (Betty) of Fairbank; two sisters: Barb Hugeback of New Hampton and Sue (Gary) Cenek of Cresco; his mother-in-law: Irene Bruess of Protivin; brothers and sisters-in-law: Donna (Doug) Reiseck of Waterloo, Kathy (Dale) Ryan, Jan Hansmeier, Connie (Keith) Lukes, Larry (Diane) and Randy (Zita) Bruess, all of the Protivin area; Betty (Doug) Soukup of Spillville and Cindy (Ed) Behr of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews. Published: NEW ALBIN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Thomas C. Darling of New Albin was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Albin with Rev. John Moser officiating. Interment was held in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in New Albin with Military Rites by the New Albin VFW #5603. Visitation was held Thursday, Sept. 6 from 4-8 p.m. at the New Albin Community Center in New Albin where there was a Parish Scripture Service at 6 p.m. Visitation was also held at the church on Friday one hour before mass time. Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Lansing, Iowa handled the arrangements. Thomas, 84, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Thomas C. Darling was born July 12, 1928, in Jefferson, Minn., the son of Lysander and Clara (Myer) Darling. He attended school in New Albin through the tenth grade. He served with the US Army in Korea and was awarded a purple heart from injuries sustained in combat. On June 13, 1955 he married Elizabeth "Betty" Meyer at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Galesville, Wis. Tom worked as a part-time police officer in New Albin and was a welder for Trane Company for 37 and a half years. He was also a volunteer firefighter. After his retirement in 1990, he worked for five years at Wal-Mart as a greeter. Tom enjoyed hunting, baseball, was an avid Kee High fan, fishing, Chicago Cubs, and he enjoyed helping his wife with the daycare kids. Tom is survived by five children: Daria Darling of New Albin, Douglas (Karen) Darling of New Albin, Debra Darling of Waukon, Dina (Scott) Spieker of Cresco and Daniel Darling of New Albin; his "adopted" daycare grandkids; two brothers: Robert (Mary) Darling of Strawberry Point and Elton Darling of New Albin; and several brothers and sisters-in-law. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Betty on Nov. 21, 1995; his parents; his brothers: Vernon, Douglas "John" and Melvin "Dag"; his sisters: Lillian in infancy, Margareta "Bunny", Elsie, Virgina, Vivian and Belva; his daughter Debra's special friend: Paul Moritz; several brothers and sisters-in-law; and his wife, Betty's parents.

Ann Bremseth was born Nov. 21, 1934, in
Harmony, Minn., the daughter of Joe and
Rita (Hanlon) Kingsley. She attended
school in Harmony, graduating from
Harmony High School in 1952. Teresa worked as a waitress and later owned the Townhouse Restaurant in Harmony. She was an active member of Nativity Catholic Church and did volunteer work at the Harmony Nursing Home. Teresa and LeRoy enjoyed camping and traveling to Texas and San Diego to visit family. The last four years she lived at Harmony Manor where she enjoyed playing cards with her friends. She is survived by four children: Joe (Karen) Bremseth of San Diego, Calif., Rosemary Bremseth of Kerryville, Texas, Russell (Dianne) Bremseth of Cresco and Debra (Jon) Elliott of Canton, Minn.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister: Mary (Bob) Vitsie of Rochester, Minn.; and a sister-in-law: Maxine Kingsley of Harmony. years. George, 73, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. George M. Eichenseer was born the son of George and Delores (Biernbaum) Eichenseer in Nebraska and was raised by Protivin. He graduated from Rudolphinum High School in 1957 and DeVry Technical Institute in 1961. He moved to Joliet, Ill. in 1961 and worked as a route salesman for Milano Bakery - he retired in 2000.
George's greatest joys in life were
spoiling his grandchildren and playing
golf. He enjoyed walking and riding his

Lyle, Minn., the son of Randall and
Selma (Johnson) Perkins. He lived in the
Grafton, Iowa and Lyle area for many
years. He was once married to Patricia (Gess)
Perkins and in 1975 moved to Decorah,
Iowa. He is survived by his wife, Ludmilla of Cresco; his daughters: Cynthia Corbin of Black River Falls, Wis., Marcia (Jim) Sewick of Waukon, Lori Perkins of Independence, and Renae (Randy) McIntosh of Decorah; stepdaughters: Charlotte (Stan) Upah of Toledo, Iowa, Denise (Rick) Mills of Kansas City, Kan., and Amy (Kevin) Brandt of Sumner, Iowa; stepson: Doug (Trish) Stadler of Chelsea, Iowa; 24 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his sister: Helen Funk of Austin, Minn. Lewis Maravetz was born December 13,
1920, on a farm near Lourdes, Iowa, the
son of Lewis and Louise (Shimek)
Maravetz. He attended and graduated from
Immaculate Conception Academy at Elma in
1940. Arnold owned and operated Arnold's
Tavern, now known as the Blue Bird, from
1945-1947. In 1947, Arnold opened his
first auto body shop. After a fire in
1949, he rebuilt the shop in its current
location, operating it for 60 plus
years. In his later years he
participated in the restoration of
antique tractors and retired at the age
of 90. Arnold enjoyed fishing, gardening, making toys and more fishing. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Elma, served on the Parish Council; a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus; a member of the Elma Fire Department, where he served as Chief at one time as well as serving on the Elma Town Council. Arnold is survived by his children: Mark (Theresa) Maravetz of Albuquerque, N.M. and Marlys (Jens) Wiegand of West Linn, Ore.; two grandsons: Scott and Jeff; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother: Ray (Ann) Maravetz of Riceville; one sister: Marjorie (Leo) Weber of Charles City and one brother-in-law: Dick Nicholson of Osage. Gerald, 90, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012 in Loma Linda, Calif. Gerald L. Bigalk was born May 30, 1922 near Cresco, Iowa the only child of Susie L. and Newton C. Bigalk. The family farmed in the area for a number of years and moved to Chino, Calif. in 1935 where they had a black walnut ranch. Jerry graduated from Chino High School in 1941. In 1942 he joined the Army as a medical corpsman and was discharged in 1946 as a Tech Corporal. When he returned from the war he met Artis Baudoin and the couple was married in March, 1947. While
living in the area, Jerry discovered his
future vocation as a printer when he
worked for local newspapers. In 1953 the
couple moved to the Antelope Valley
where he worked for the Ledger-Gazette
newspaper and then he and Artis opened
their own commercial printing business,
Printing Service Center. After 34 years
they sold the business. He is survived by daughters: Barbara Thornhill of Grand Terrace, Calif. and Marcia Desjardins and her husband Michael of Furlong, Pa.; grandchildren: Craig Thornhill, Lee Thornhill, Christina Martinez, and Leslie Martinez; four great-grandchildren; and loving companion Virginia Otten.
