Ida Noecker

Funeral services for Ida Noecker of Decorah will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 2 at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Locust with Rev. John Mayer officiating.

Interment will be in Hesper Public Cemetery, Hesper.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at the Schluter Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and also after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday.

Ida, 83, died Sunday, December 29, 2002 at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah following complications of Alzheimers disease.

She is survived by three daughters: Margo Walsh and Suzanne Matter, both of Decorah, and Bettie Fox of Oelwein; two sons: Michael and Billie, both of Decorah; two brothers: Clyde Quandahl of Decorah and Howard Quandahl of Stoughton, WI.


Rudolph Holthaus

Funeral services for Rudolph G. "Rudy" Holthaus of Calmar were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 31 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina with Monsignor Cletus Hawes officiating.

Interment was in Our Lady of Seven Dolors Cemetery in Festina. Schluter Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Rudolph, 79 died Saturday, December 28, 2002 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home following a short illness.

He is survived by his wife Germaine of Calmar; two daughters: Marleen Numedahl and Jan Vick, both of Decorah; one son: Leland of Calmar; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three sisters: Agnes Riha and Lillian Holthaus, both of Decorah, and Caroline Schildmeyer of Ossian; and three brothers: August and Ralph, both of Ossian, and Francis of Calmar.


Alton Rue

Funeral services for Alton Rue of Ridgeway were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 20 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway with Pastor Phillip Olson and Pastor Ginny Olson officiating.

Interment was in Lincoln Cemetery rural Ridgeway. Pallbearers were: Denny Beaumont, Ray Elder, Allen Hauber, Maynard Hovden, Roger Kratz, and Darryl Rue. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Because of advancing Alzheimer's disease, Alton spent the last few months of his life at the Patty Elwood Center and the Evans Home in Cresco where he died on December 17, 2002.

Alton Rudolph Rue was born May 22, 1918 in Lincoln Township, Winneshiek County, the son of Louis and Inga (Hovden) Rue. He was baptized into the Christian faith on June 23, 1918 at Lincoln Lutheran Church, where on May 22, 1932 he confirmed his faith. When he was 16, Alton graduated from Ridgeway High School in the class of 1935. From the age of 16 he worked in the poultry house in Ridgeway to save money to buy the farm next to his home place.

On January 28, 1950 he married Audrey Kelly at St. Bridget's Church near Bluffton. Even though they moved to town to retire in 1987, he was at the farm every day to help the boys.

He was an avid sports fan, but in particular of baseball. He played on the Ridgeway town baseball team.

He served as township trustee in Lincoln Township and on the election board. He was a member of Lincoln and Peace Lutheran churches and served on the congregational councils of both churches. For many years, he was a member of the Lincoln Cemetery Association Board. He loved to ride horses and was a member of the Winneshiek County Saddle Club. He served on the county ASCS Board. He was a member of the Elks in Decorah.

He loved to play cards and attend farm auctions.

He is survived by his wife Audrey; three sons: Harold and Kelvin of Ridgeway, and Tony Heinzman of Apple Valley, CA; one daughter: Linda Murphy of Waterloo; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother: Irvin of Cresco; and one sister: Pearl Hoagland of Waterloo.

Alton was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Garvin and Harold; and one sister: Arlene Beaumont.


Rose Shimek

Funeral services for Rose Shimek were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 28 at the Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Kenneth Gehling concelebrating with Rev. John Moser.

Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes. Her children placed the pall. Pallbearers were her grandchildren: Joe J. Joerger, Mary Pat Shimek, Gerry Shimek, Janis Steen, Jillaine Kappes, and Jerry Gehling. Conway Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Rose, 99, died Monday, December 23, 2002 at the Cresco Care Center where she has made her home since 1995.

Rose Shimek was born March 20, 1903 in Howard County, the daughter of John F. and Anna (Zajicek) Vorda. She was baptized and confirmed in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She attended rural schools in Howard and Winneshiek County. She was employed in the Strother Hotel in Cresco.

On June 21, 1921 she was married to Joseph Shimek by the Rev. Rudolf Lakomy in the Holy Trinity Church at Protivin. They farmed on various farms, eventually farmed on the farm between Schley and Lourdes. they retired in 1970 and moved into Cresco in 1971.

She had been a 4-H leader, was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Rosary Society and held many of its offices. She was an honorary member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and was a member of the ladies club "Evening in Paris".

She liked to garden, sew, bake and making quilts.

She is survived by two daughters: Loretta Joerger of Las Vegas, NV and Marian Gehling of Albert Lea, MN; two sons: Cletus of Charles City and Kenneth of Cresco; 31 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one sister: Ann Lukes of Hoquim, WA.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband Joseph on January 3, 1977; one daughter: Lorraine Pesek; one son: Clarence; one great-grandson; her parents; one brother: James; and three sisters: Mae Nibaur, Agnes Wiest, and Celia Shimek.

Harley Fagerlie

Funeral services for Harley Fagerlie were held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 14 at Aase Haugen Home Chapel with Rev. Bryan Robertson officiating.

Interment was in Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Dean Bigalk, Carlton Fagerlie, Jr., Christopher Fagerlie, Duane Hagen, David Halverson, and Clair Steine. Fjelstul Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Harley, 76, died Monday, December 9, 2002 at the Aase Haugen Home where he became a resident on April 26, 1996.

Harley Melangton Fagerlie was born June 3, 1926 in Decorah, the son of Hans Christian and Junetta Magnella (Williams) Fagerlie. He attended Decorah Public Schools.

On September 23, 1972 he married June Stockdale at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah. They were later divorced. He has worked at Nehi Bottling Co., Luther College, the City of Decorah Landfill, the Aase Haugen Home, and Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home.

He was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church.

He loved to fish and collected fishing lures. He liked to play Solitaire, Bingo and cards. He was a member of the Sons of Norway. He loved music, plyaing keyboards, organ and accordion and played in the musical group, The Moonlighters, for many years.

He is survived by two stepchildren: Duane Hagen of Waterloo and Rosalie Bigalk of Cresco; five step grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; one sister: Adeline Koepp of Cresco and his ex-wife, June Fagerlie of Cresco.

Harley was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Carlton; and two sisters: Delores Koepp and Margaret Degreve.


Dona Jackson

Funeral services for Dona Jackson were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 4 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Gary Lee officiating.

Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery, rural Cresco. Pallbearers were: Floyd Kitzmann, Mark Baethke, John Rudolph, Brian Rudolph, Bill Fenske, and Mark Grinhaug. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Dona, 73, died December 31, 2002 at Maple Manor Nursing Home in Rochester, MN.

Dona Jean Jackson was born March 12, 1929 in Rockford, IL, the daughter of Byron Young and Hester Dawson and later moved with her family to Cresco.

On June 19, 1953 she married Glenn V. Jackson in Reno, NV. She worked for many years as a telephone operator and later as proofreader for the Cresco Times-Plain Dealer. She traveled extensively with her husband during his military service in the U.S. Marine Corps, including living three years in London, England.

She was active in her church circle at First Lutheran Church. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and reading.

She is survived by her husband Glenn; three daughters: Lisa Baethke of Zumbrota, MN, Glenda Rudolph of Minneapolis, MN, and Kelly Jackson of Minneapolis; four grandchildren; and one brother: Anthony of Lemont, IL.

Dona was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother: Ronnie Dvorak.


Russell Krakliow

Funeral services for Russell Krakliow of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 2 at Hodgson Funeral Home, Ltd. in Rock Island, IL with Rev. Renee Bridwell officiating.

Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Rock Island, IL.

Russell, 99, died Sunday, December 29, 2002 at the Howard County Residential Care Facility rural Cresco.

Russell Ellis Krakliow was born July 16, 1903 in Coal Valley, IL, the son of Frank and Emma (Ellis) Krakliow.

In August 1955 he married Grace Beuchel and she died in 1974. He married Alice Steiner on July 16, 1923 and she died in 1952.

Russell was formerly a member of Fifteenth Avenue Christian Church in Rock Island. He was a former member of UAW Local 1414, Rock Island. Russell was an inspector for Farmall retiring in 1962 after 33 years of service.

He is survived by one daughter: Barbara Lammers of Chester; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Russell was preceded in death by one grandchild; two stepdaughters: Ruth Douglas and Rita Krikorian; his parents; and one sister: Bernice Krakliow.


Robert Nolda

Funeral services for Robert Nolda were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 3 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma with Rev. Edward Bard Chaplain for Hospice of North Iowa officiating.

Interment was in Saratoga Cemetery.

Robert, 77, died Monday, December 30, 2002 at his sister's home near Elma of cancer.

Robert Daniel Nolda was born September 23, 1925 at Lincoln, NE, the son of Jacob and Amalia (Gies) Nolda. He was baptized and confirmed in Lincoln, NE. He graduated from Crystal Lake High School in 1943. He served in the US Navy during WWII in the South Pacific aboard the USS Bristol.

He farmed for many years in the Elma area after his discharge from the Navy. He served in the Peace Corps in El Salvador voluntarily mentoring modern techniques. He also served on the Howard County Equity Board and was on the Farmers Home Administration Board for a number of years.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed watching nature. He enjoyed working crossword puzzles, reading and playing his harmonica.

He is survived by two sisters: Esther Blitsch of Versailles, MO and June Roethler of Elma; and one brother: Harry of Strawberry Point.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Richard in 1990; and one sister: Marion Hammond in 2000.


Mae Robinson

Funeral services for Mae Robinson were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 5 at the Saratoga Presbyterian Church with Pastors Tim Sir and Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating.

Interment was in Plesant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs. Pallbearers were: Brian Bakken, Brady Bakken, Chad Robinson, Nathan Robinson, Joshua Bakken, Arnie Bakken, Martha Keune, and Sarah Robinson. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mae, 81, died January 2, 2003 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Mae LaVon Robinson was born May 17, 1921 in Albion Township, rural Cresco, the daughter of Wesley and Ethel (Barnes) Keune. She attended the Nichols country school thru seventh grade. While in the seventh grade she took the State Board Exams and passed straight into high school. She graduated in 1938 and at the age of 17 was too young to start teaching so went to college at Iowa Normal in Cedar Falls for one year. She started teaching in 1939 in Oakleigh country school near Cresco. In the fall of 1942, she started teaching in Lime Springs.

On April 3, 1947 she married John R. Robinson and took nine years off to raise their three children.

She resumed teaching in 1957 in Lime Springs and continued teaching there until 1984. She went back to college by attending summer and night schools at Luther, Upper Iowa, UNI, and by completing many correspondence courses. She graduated Cum Laude with a BS degree in 1970.

After retiring, she continued to volunteer at the Lime Springs School and in 1995 received the State of Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award.

She is survived by her husband John; three children: Connie Bakken of Lime Springs, Donnie of Iowa City, and Doug of Las Vegas, NV; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother: Dale of Cresco.

Mae was preceded in death by her parents.


Emma Franzen

Funeral services for Emma Franzen of Charles City, formerly of St. Lucas, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7 at St. Lukes Catholic Church, St. Lucas with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

Interment was in St. Lukes Cemetery. Emma's brother and sister-in-law, Linus and Anna Franzen, placed the pall. Pallbearers were: Greg Mahr, Bob Robbins, Dean Franzen, Ron Holthaus, Deb Hertges, and Denise Vangsness. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Emma, 68, died Saturday, January 4, 2003 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

Emma Franzen was born April 12, 1934 on her parents farm near St. Lucas in rural Fayette County, the daughter of Edward J. and Rose (Smith) Franzen. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Lukes Catholic Church and attended school there. Emma lived with her parents until they became older and in the 1970s became a resident of Comprehensive Systems in Charles City.

She is survived by four brothers: Norbert of West Union, Linus of Lawler, Donald of West Union, and Delbert of Waucoma.

Emma was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters: Lenora Hackman, Agnes Pelikian, and Luella Holthaus; and three brothers: Julius, Matthew, and Mathias in infancy.


Raymond Rapp

Funeral services for Raymond Rapp of Forest City were held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 6 at Saratoga Presbyterian Church in Saratoga with Rev. Tim Sir officiating.

Interment was in Saratoga Cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Raymond, 92, died Friday, January 3, 2003 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Raymond Lewis Rapp was born December 23, 1910 in Britt, the son of John and Selma (Anderson) Rapp. He received his education in rural schools of Hancock Co.

He married Josephine Booth and to this union three children were born: Jimmy died at birth, Paul Ray of Richmond, MO, and Janine of North Hollywood, CA. They divorced in 1948.

On March 8, 1949 he married Dorothy Robinson at Rochester, MN and to this union three children were born: Timothy of Seattle, WA, Ted of Ankeny, and Polly Miller of Forest City.

Raymond volunteered for service in the United States Army in the spring of 1943. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was a truck driver, backhoe service, corn shelling, and dealing in scrap metals. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball games.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Forest City; his children; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister: Mildred Hernon of Forest City; two half-sisters: Shirley Netlund and Alice Rayhons, both of Garner; and one half-brother: John Rapp of Caney, KS.

Raymond was preceded in death by one son: Jimmy; his parents; four brothers and six sisters.


Jeffrey Sommer

Funeral services for Jeffrey Sommer were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 6 at Imanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating.

Interment was in Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City. Pallbearers were: Adam Hickman, Shannon Owen, Luis Solano, Tim Eastvold, Chad Erickson, and Eric Gustafson. Peterson Lund Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Jeffrey, 33, died Tuesday, December 31, 2002.

Jeffrey C. Sommer was born August 19, 1969 in Iowa City, the son of Carl and Ora Mae (Fagner) Sommer. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. Jeff grew up in Cresco, moving with his family to Forest City in 1974. He graduated from Forest City High School in 1988 and continued his education at the Lincoln Technical School in Des Moines, graduating as one of the top 10 students in his class.

He made is home in Forest City and for the last 13 years has worked at Skarlis Olds Honda Motor Company in Mason City.

He liked to go fishing, loved playing cards and was an excellent cook. He also enjoyed watching football and NASCAR races on TV.

He is survived by his mother: Ora Mae of Forest City; and one sister: June Fretheim of Decorah.

Jeffrey was preceded in death by his father; and his grandparents.


Albert Scholbrock

Funeral services for Albert Scholbrock will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 10 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Waucoma Funeral Chapel. Rosary: Catholic Daughters of America and the Rosary Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m. Scripture Wake Service at 7:00 p.m.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Waucoma. Burnham-Wood Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Albert, 92, died Sunday, January 5, 2003 at Colonial Manor in Elma.


Delia Hebrink

Funeral services for Delia Hebrink of Cresco will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, January 15 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco with Rev. Tim Walker officiating.

Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers are her grandchildren. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Delia, 93, died Sunday, January 12, 2003 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Delia Hebrink was born March 13, 1909 in Fillmore Co. MN, the daughter of Henry and Mary Schoppers. She attended rural school in the Greenleafton area of Fillmore County.

On March 3, 1928 she married Loren Hebrink in the Cherry Grove Church parsonage. They farmed in the Cherry Grove and Harmony area until moving to Iowa in 1949 when they frmed in the Ridgeway area until moving to Cresco.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, and was active in her circle. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens, Hospital Auxiliary, and several clubs.

She is survived by one daughter: Remona Kisrow of Rochester, MN; six sons: Wendell of Midwest City, OK, Rodney of Preston, MN, Dale of Mounds View, MN, Gary of Rochester, MN, John of Blaine, MN, and Kenneth of Cresco; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Delia was preceded in death by her husband Loren in 1996; two sons: Alvin and Lyle; one granddaughter; one sister: Marion; and four brothers: Marvin, Clarence, Herb, and Harry.


Paul Schutte

Funeral services for Paul Schutte of Fort Atkinson were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7 at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson with Rev. John Moser officiating.

Paul, 51, died from injuries received in an automobile accident on Friday, January 3, 2003 near Spring Grove, MN.

He is survived by two daughters: Becky Schutte of Decorah and Amanda Schutte of Fort Atkinson; one son: Matt of Decorah; two sisters: Elsie Busta of Cresco and Scarlet Stansbery of Mason City; and three brothers: Floyd of Commanche, Jim of Clinton, and Harold of Waterloo.


Idella Pavlovec

Funeral services for Idella (Swehla) Pavlovec of Decorah, formerly of Calmar, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church cemetery. Schluter Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Idella, 92, died Friday, January 3, 2003 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI after a sudden illness.

Idella is survived by two daughters: Becky Fenger of Phoenix, AZ and Janelle Pavlovec of Calmar.



 

Ralph Rassman

Funeral services for Ralph Larry "Bones" Rassman of Omaha, NE were held at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 22.

Interment was in Fort Calhoun Cemetery, Fort Calhoun, NE. Kremer Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ralph, 62, died suddenly, December 16, 2002.

He is survived by two sons: Dan and Dean, both of Omaha; two grandchildren; two step children; and one sister: Diane Rassman of Newport, MN.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents: Ralph Ned Hughs, Virginia and Delbert Rassman; one sister: Vivian Allen; and one brother: David.


Lillian Carlsborg

Funeral services for Lillian C. (Skaim) Carlsborg of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 10 at the Glenwood Lutheran Church with Rev. Susan Debner officiating.

Interment was in the Glenwood Cemetery. Schluter Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Lillian, 88, died Tuesday, January 7, 2003 at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah following a lengthy illness.

She is survived by one daughter: Arlene Westby of Decorah; and one son: Lester of Ames.


Harry Sorensen

Funeral services for Harry Sorensen of Protivin were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 11 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Lawler with Rev. Peter Peterson officiating.

Interment was in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Dennis Mracek, John Balik, Paul Polashek, Raymond Lukes, John Polashek, and Ken Panos. Honorary pallbearers were: Bill Meirick, Dennis Meirick, Joel Meirick, Mark Meirick, Benny Halvorson, Ray Dreckman, Chris Lynch, and Jordan Sorensen. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Harry, 72, died suddenly, Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at his home of natural causes.

Harry T. Sorensen was born March 18, 1930 in rural Blackhawk County, the son of Walter and Jensine (Debel) Sorensen. He attended school in the Waterloo school system.

On April 16, 1954 he married Jane Larsson at the Little Brown church in Nashua. Harry worked several jobs in his lifetime beginning as a driver for the Yellow Cab Co. in Waterloo. For a short time he was a carpenter followed by working at the Chicago Great Western Railroad. In 1964 they moved to the Jerico area where he was employed by Harlan Qualley. For the last 38 years Harry worked at Farmer's Mill in Protivin.

He enjoyed camping and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife Jane; three daughters: ZoAnn Lynch of New Hampton, Cindy Lenehan of Alta Vista, and Malinda Sorensen of Hazelton; three sons: Ted of New Hampton, Greg of Salt Lake City, and Chad of Libertyville, IL; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother: John of Waterloo; and two sisters: Viola Nelson and Elena Schons, both of Waterloo.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Clarence; and one sister: Eva Phillips.


Esther Shumate

Funeral services for Esther Shumate of Fredericksburg were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 14 at Peace United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg with Rev. Joan Fumetti officiating.

Interment was in Osage Cemetery, Osage. Pallbearers were: Tim Cooney, Harvey Drewelow, Harvey Richards, Dennis Hartson, Dale Flugge, and Anon Anderson. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Homes handled the arrangements.

Esther, 84, died Friday, January 10, 2003 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

Esther Eunice Shumate was born April 5, 1918 in Racine, MN, the daughter of John and Oline (Bates) Kath. She attended rural country school near Racine and attended high school in Stewartville, MN.

On May 9, 1936 she married Art Shumate and they resided in Fredericksburg. Esther worked as a cook for many years for her sister and husband, Lila and Harvey Grummett at their Fredericksburg restaurant.

She is survived by three sisters: Lila Grummett of Oelwein, Doris Fellows, and Ilene Kath, both of Rochester, MN.

Esther was preceded in death byher husband Art on December 16, 1978; and her parents.


Joseph Vopava

Funeral services for Joseph Vopava of Ridgeway were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 11 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway with Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

Inurnment will be at a later date in the Bohemian National Cemetery, rural Ridgeway. Pallbearers were the grandchildren. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Joseph, 78, died Tuesday, January 7, 2003 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Joseph J. Vopava was born July 31, 1924 in Sumner township, Winneshiek County, the son of Joseph and Anna (Swehla) Vopava. He attended country school and Spillville and Ridgeway schools. Following his education, he continued working on the family farm.

On June 27, 1949 he married Rosemary Hovden at the Madison Lutheran Church near Ridgeway. They moved to a farm one mile north of Joe's parents and made this their home. After retirement, they moved into Ridgeway on November 21, 1998.

He was active in his church and community. On March 19, 1950 he was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran parsonage. He was the first lay president of the Lincoln Lutheran Church, and was on the building committee when Peace Lutheran Church was built. He was on the board of the Ridgeway Telephone Company for over 40 years, a member of the Bohemian National Cemetery, on the county election board, and served on the town council for the city of Ridgeway for the last three years.

Joe farmed, did custom work from 1962 until the mid 70's, sold seed corn and hunted, fished, played cards, hunted mushrooms, family genealogy and reading. He liked to travel, drive school bus, and was a great fan of the "Cubs" and "Bears".

He is survived by his wife Rosemary; his children: Judy Johanson of Lisbon, Vickie Larson of Waukon, Rhonda Vopava Geyette of Minneapolis, MN, Joseph K. of Ridgeway, Bruce of Marshalltown, and Deb Keefe of Cresco; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and one sister: Elaine Murray of Cresco.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Robert; and one sister: June Bachmann.


Allie Houdek

Allie Jean Houdek died at her birth on January 9, 2003 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN.

She was laid to rest on January 11, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Cemetery with Rev. Keith Parker officiating.

She is survived by her parents: Todd and Rachel (Bronner) Houdek; grandparents: Leonard and Carol Bronner and Butch and Lavada Houdek, all of Cresco; and great-grandmothers: Madeline Duneman and Adeline Houdek, both of Cresco.

Allie was preceded in death by her great-grandparents: Ruth and Carl Frederickson, Agnes and Rudy Bronner, Ray Duneman, Alfred Hass and Clem Houdek.

Mina Batten

Graveside services for Mina Batten of Davenport were held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15 at the Davenport Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Mina, 102, died Sunday, January 12, 2003 at Manor Care, Davenport.

Mina E. Batton was born October 30, 1900 in Cresco, the daughter of Godfried and Lisette (Leuenberger) Lienhard.

On November 5, 1920 she married Wesley S. Batten in Rock Island. She had been employed 20 years for JI Case Company prior to retiring in 1967.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport.

She is survived by one son: Wayne of Bettendorf; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother: Fred of Ft. Pierce, FL; and one sister: Charlotte Rink of Cresco.

Mina was preceded in death by her husband Wesley in 1947; one grandson; one granddaughter; her parents; two sisters: Lydia Evans and Marie Zoeckler; and two brothers: Walter and Otto.


LeRoy Follette

Funeral services for LeRoy Follette were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 16 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco with Pastor Tim Sir officiating.

Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs in the spring. Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren.

LeRoy, 92, died Monday, January 13, 2003 at the Regional Services of Howard County.

Fred LeRoy Follette was born August 29, 1910 at Vale, SD, the son of Fred and Fern Follette. He grew up near Vale. He graduated from Newell High School in 1930.

On January 1, 1934 he married Louise Wright in Spearfish, SD. The family moved to Dike in 1944 and then to Lime Springs in 1957. He farmed there until his retirement in 1973.

He is survived by his children: Dave of Tucson, AZ, Janet Follette of Vale, SD, Kathy Hill of Beresford, SD, JoAnne Kosanke of Rochester, MN; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Beth Wendt of Wisconsin Rapids, WI and Del Waterman of Austin, TX; and three brothers: George of Vale, SD, Robert of Coeur D'Alene, ID, and Richard of Sinclairville, NY.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his wife Louise; one daughter: Louetta; one son: Clinton; his parents; and one brother: Everett.


Francis Junko

Funeral services for Francis "Fritz" Junko of Spirit Lake, formerly of Lawler and Waterloo, will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, January 22 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

Interment will be in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church Cemetery in Lawler. The pall will be placed on the casket by his six children. Francis, 72, died Friday, January 17, 2002 at the Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville of cancer.

Francis Joseph Junko was born January 11, 1931 in Lawler, the oldest of Frank and Mary Stasia (Britt) Junko's eight children. He attended grade school and high school in Lawler.

In 1950 he married Nadine Pitts. To this union four children were born: Kathy, Barb, Bob, and Steve. They lived in Lawler and Fritz was manager at the Lawler Co-op. After the couple divorced, Fritz moved to New Hampton and began working in Waterloo at John Deere. He married Rosemarie Webb. They had one son: Jamie. They later divorced. He later married Jan Nelson and they had one daughter: Heidi. They later divorced and Fritz moved to Waterloo where he remained with John Deere until his retirement on July 31, 2002. He soon moved to Spirit Lake where he lived until his death.

He was an active league bowler and golfer, enjoyed fishing and was a sports enthusiast.

He is survived by three sons: Bob of Braselton, GA, Steve of Portland, TX, and Jamie of New Hampton; three daughters: Kathy Merritt of Williamsburg, Barb Matuska of Cedar Rapids, and Heidi Junko of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers: Paul of Cedar Rapids and Dan of Des Moines; and four sisters: Joann Keister of Minneapolis, Susan Navin of CT, Mary Heinz of Spencer, and Helen Kuennen of Waterloo.

Francis was preceded in death by a former wife: Rosemary; his parents; and one brother: Gene.


Clinton Holcomb

Clinton Holcomb was born May 13, 1909 in Howard County, the son of Howard L. and Anna (Volkmann) Holcomb. He lived and farmed his entire life in Howard County.

William Rassman, Sr.

William, 100, died Wednesday, January 15, 2002 at Regional Health Services of Howard County.

William Rassman was born November 13, 1902 in Howard County, the son of Fred and Anna (Souhrada) Rassman.

On June 25, 1930 he married Hazel Nieberline at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. They farmed in Howard and Winneshiek Counties until 1970 when they retired and moved to Cresco.

He is survived by one son: William, Jr. of Ridgeway; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

William was preceded in death by his wife Hazel on December 11, 2002; one grandson; his parents; three brothers: Fred, John, and Delbert.

Virginia Broughton

Virginia, 90, died Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union following a short illness.

Virginia Marie Broughton was born January 13, 1913 in Shelby county, the daughter of Peter and Lona (Jensen) Madson. She taught school in Shelby County and Wadena.

On May 29, 1939 she married Bill Broughton in Papillion, NE. She helped her husband at Bills Sport Shop in West Union for several years.

She is survived by three sons: Charles of Calmar, Don of Battle Mountain, NV and David, also of Battle Mountain, NV; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters: Marjorie Custer of Harlan and Janette Dunn of Englewood, CO; and one brother: Phillip of Harlan.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Bill in 1999; her parents; and one brother: Paul in infancy.


Mildred Elliott

Mildred, 91, died Saturday, January 25, 2003 at her home of cancer.

Mildred Louise Elliott was born June 9, 1911 in Portis, Smith County, KS, the daughter of Rev. James E. and Alta (Ransom) Small. She graduated from Greene Iowa High School in 1930. She worked as a telephone operator in Greene.

On October 30, 1937 she married Glen Robert Elliott. They farmed north of Fredericksburg until 1974.

Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, and trying new recipes.

She is survived by four sons: Robert of Sumner, Larry of Mt. Morris, IL, Terry of Fredericksburg, and Thomas of Valparaiso, IN; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister: June Nelson of North Manchester, IN; and one brother: Rufus of Lake Placid, FL.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Glen in July 2002; her parents; three sisters: Alyce Miller Renner, Zella Small, and Lena Small; and two brothers: Francis and Asher.


Floyd Harkrader

Floyd, 86, died Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at his rural home near Fredericksburg after a lengthy illness.

Floyd G. Harkrader was born January 12, 1917 at Eldorado, KS, the son of Roy and Letha (Bellmon) Harkrader Sr. He received his education in the Crookhill School in rural Wichita, KS and graduated from Wichita East High School in 1935.

On August 4, 1946 he married Eleanor Schutte at the Little Brown Church near Nashua. He served as a Staff Sergeant with the Army Air Force during WWII from 1942-1946. He also taught G.I. School in West Union. Floyd was a dairy farmer and a car salesman at Buhr Chevrolet and later for Foster Ford in Tripoli.

He loved horses, cars and doing laundry. He continued to do his farm chores everyday until June of 2002 when complications following surgery left him unable to do so.

He is survived by his wife Eleanor; one son: Dennis of Fredericksburg, three grandchildren; two brothers: Roy of Chanute, KS and Marvin of Elk City, KS; and two sisters: Mary O'Donnel of Ozaukie, KS and Helen Malcom of Okmulgee, OK.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Harry.


Lloyd Peters

Lloyd, 87, died Saturday, January 25, 2003 at Sunrise Guest Home in Fredericksburg after a brief illness.

Lloyd H. Peters was born February 26, 1915 in Adams County, IL, the son of Fred and Mary (Tieken) Peters.

On December 12, 1939 he married Elizabeth Edgar in New Hampton. They farmed north of Fredericksburg. He had been a dairy farmer for 39 years before disposing of his heard of Holsteins in 1979. They moved to Fredericksburg in 1998.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fredericksbrug.

He is survived by his wife Libby; two sons: Richard of Lincoln, NE and Rodney of Dubuque; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister: Lena Marie Webb of Hannibal, MO.

Lloyd was preceded in death by one son: Robert; his parents; five brothers: Fred, Harold, Kenneth, Eugene, and Ellis; and five sisters: Lula Guenther, Ruth Rozell, Florence Foreman, Anna Curtright, and Mary Jane in infancy.


Jerome Tupy

Jerome, 85, died Friday, January 24, 2003 at the Bickford Cottage in Cedar Falls of natural causes.

Jerome Joseph Tupy was born March 23, 1917 on the family farm near Little Turkey, the son of Arthur and Anna (Karnik) Tupy. He attended country school near his family's home. After his schooling he farmed with his father.

On February 14, 1939 he married Lillian M. Formanek at Duncan. They farmed near Lawler until moving to New Hampton in 1975. He worked as a security guard at Sara Lee in New Hampton for 17 years until his retirement in the early 1990's.

He was a member of the Holy Family Parish in New Hampton.

He was an avid reader, and enjoyed reading about baseball and he also enjoyed playing cards.

He is survived by two daughters: Majorie Harris and Pat Foreman, both of Waterloo; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother: Ray of Florida, and one sister: Camilla Taylor of Spillville.

Jerome was preceded in death by his wife Lillian on June 26, 2000 his parents; and one brother: Charles.


Victor Praska

Victor, 87, died Thursday, January 16, 2003 at Mercy Hospital in Mason City of natural causes.

Victor James Praska was born November 17, 1915 at home on the farm near Alta Vista, the son of John and Anna (Koudelka) Praska. He received his education at the Deerfield rural school and at parochial school in Alta Vista.

On May 2, 1939 he married Rose Anna Komarek at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They farmed the home place until retiring in 1977 at which time they moved to Charles City.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Catholic Order of Foresters.

He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, attending area church picnics and dinners.

He is survived by one daughter: Jane Pitzen of Stacyville; one son: Donald of Charles City; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two step great-granddaughters; and one sister: Marcella Meirick of Alta Vista.

Victor was preceded in death by his wife Rose on January 13, 1978; his parents; two brothers: Emil and Ralph; and three sisters: Rose Chihak, Lucy Berka, and Florence Vick.


Earl Klingsheim

Funeral services for Earl Klingsheim of Spring Valley, MN, formerly of Wykoff, MN, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 24 at Valley Christian Center Assembly of God in Spring Valley with Pastors Steve Kuno and Dustin McCaleb co-officiating.

Earl, 87, died Monday, January 20, 2003 at the Spring Valley Care Center.

Earl M. Klingsheim was born February 11, 1915 in rual Lime Springs, the son of Olaf and Bertha (Ness) Klingsheim. He attended rural school in Lime Springs.

On August 20, 1949 he married Hildegarde Hongerholt in Spring Valley. Earl farmed his entire life on his family's farm in rural Lime Springs where he also sold seed corn. The couple retired in 1984 and moved into Wykoff. Hildegarde died November 17, 2000. Earl moved to Spring Valley Estates in November 2001.

Earl was a charter member of the Valley Christian Center Assembly of God in Spring Valley. He was also active in Promise Keepers.

He is survived by two daughters: Gloria Mueller of Marine, MN and Erleen Hartleip of Byron; one son: Galen of Lime Springs; and seven grandchildren.

Earl was preceded in death by his wife Hildegarde; one sister and seven brothers.


Irene Wessels

Irene, 94, died Monday, January 20, 2003 at the new Hampton Care Center of natural causes.

Irene M. Wessels was born in rural Chickasaw County near Alta Vista, the daughter of William and Rose (Erion) Arndt. The Arndt family moved to New Hampton in 1919 and Irene was a New Hampton High School graduate in the class of 1927.

On July 9, 1934 she married Al Wessels in Shenandoah. They moved back to New Hampton in the early 1940's when Al began working at the Don Iverson Jewelry Store until they purchased the store and renamed it Wessels Jewelry Store in 1955. They operated the main street business until they retired in 1975.

She was a memer of Holy Family Parish Rosary Society, a lifetime Catholic Daughters of the America's member and a 50 year member of the Legion Auxiliary.

She enjoyed playing cards, sewing, and cooking.

She is survived by one daughter: Dianne Fahey of Farmington, MN; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband Al on May 28, 1993; one brother: Art; and two sisters: Pearl Blunt and Lucille Edvards.


Leland Walby

Funeral services for Leland Walby were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 22 in the Frankville Community Presbyterian Church at Frankville with Rev. James Walker officiating.

Leland, 77, died Friday, January 17, 2003 at the home of his daughter Jana in Seattle, WA.

Leland Everett Walby was born August 22, 1925 at Frankville, the son of Alwin Sanford Walby and Charlotte Lenora (Peck) Walby. He attended the Frankville School and graduated from the Postville High School in 1943. He played football, and excelled in baseball as a pitcher.

On June 1, 1946 he married Janice Nellie Brainard at Postville. Four daughters were born. Later, two sons: Craig and Rick were adopted.

He was a progressive farmer in Allamakee and Winneshiek Counties, and a salesman for Funk's G. Hybrid Seed Corn and Walnut Grove Feeds. He received the Allamakee County Distinguished Dairyman award in 1972. He served as President and was the first secretary for the Big Four Dairy Herd Improvement Association. He served on the Postville School Board. Other memberships include: the National Farmers Organization, Frankville Cemetery Association, Northeast Iowa Communtiy Health Board, Bloomfield Historical Society, and the Master Tree Farmer and Conservation Groups.

He was a member of the Frankville Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder on the committees.

He enjoyed the outdoors. He liked to travel, play cards, watch sporting events, bowl, and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Janice; four daughters: Jana Rupnick of Seattle WA, Mary Froelke of Cresco, Laura Geno of Postville, and Wendy Froelke of Forest Lake, MN; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother: Lester of Cedar Rapids; and one sister: Doris Ellis of DeWitt.

Leland was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister: Dorothy Waters.


Adeline Ries

Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in New Hampton. Adeline's three children placed the pall. Adeline, 93, died Monday, January 20, 2003 at the New Hampton Care Center of natural causes.

Adeline Mary Ries was born January 14, 1910 in rural Chickasaw County near North Washington, the daughter of Michael and Theresa (Peske) Burgart. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington. She received her education at St. Mary's School, graduating in 1928.

On April 25, 1932 she married Reynold Ries at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington. They retired in 1979 and moved to their home in New Hampton.

Adeline was a homemaker enjoying playing cards, traveling, crocheting, and had a great love for music.

She is survived by one daughter: Arlene Boeding of New Hampton; two sons: Cletus of New Hampton and Merle of Council Bluffs; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one sister: Loraine Kolbet; and three brothers: Marvin, Clayton, and Vincent, all of New Hampton.

Adeline was preceded in death by her husband Reynold on September 23, 1991; two infant grandsons; her parents; three brothers: Clarence, Raymond, and one in infancy; and one sister: Sarah Heit.


Irene Vaala

Irene, 93, died Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes.

Irene Geraldine Vaala was born December 6, 1909 in rural Chickasaw County near Saude, the daughter of Andrew and Mathilda (Natvig) Vaala. She attended rural country school in Utica Township and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1927. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and finished her education at a Des Moines business college. She worked with federal housing for the U.S. government in Des Moines and in Omaha, NE until she retired at the age of 70 in 1979. Irene moved back to New Hampton and later became a resident of the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She enjouyed working outdoors with her gardens and flowers, and watching the birds.

Irene was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid.

She is survived by three sisters: Gertrude Vaala of New Hampton, Ethel Mae Miller of New Hampton, and Adelaide Petersen of Ardmore, OK.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother: Gregory.
