Ruth Cameron, 95

 

    Funeral services for Ruth Cameron of Cresco, IA were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 2, 2009 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.
    Ruth, 95, died Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.
    Ruth Cameron was born April 19, 1913 in Winneshiek County, IA the daughter of Julius and Ingeborg Gunhus. She attended country schools.
    On December 16, 1936 she married Lyle Cameron. To this union three children were born, Lila Mae, Elizabeth, and Lyle. She was very proud of her full Norwegian heritage.
    She enjoyed cooking and baking, and was always cleaning. She also made time for family and playing cards. She grew up as a member of Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway, IA, and spent her adult life as an active member of First Lutheran Church in Cresco.
    She is survived by a daughter: Elizabeth (Gerald) Duneman of New Hampton; a son: Lyle Cameron of Missoula, MT; three granddaughters: Dawn (Duane) Fenneman of West Union, Cindi (Jon) Clark of Reinbeck, and Stephanie (David) McKenna of New Hampton; seven great-grandchildren: Derrick Fenneman, Brandon Fenneman, Cameron Clark, Karlee Clark, Dylan Fenneman, Tyler McKenna, and Kyan McKenna; and many nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter in infancy; her parents; two sisters: Jenny Storlie and Lillian Slifka; and eight brothers: Helmer, Melvin, Arthur, Teddy, Edwin, Freddie, Spencer, and Laurence in infancy.

Rose Stevenson, 81

 

    Funeral services for Rose E. Stevenson of Lime Springs, IA will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs.
    Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco from 4-7 p.m. today, Wednesday, January 7, and also one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

    Rose, 81, died Sunday, January 4, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.
    Rosemarie Emma Drewelow was born April 23, 1927 and graduated from New Hampton High School.
    She married Russell Stevenson on January 5, 1948 and they worked in Algonquin, IL in a factory and began farming in 1951 in the Lime Springs area.
    Rose was a very active member of the United Methodist Church, vice president of the U.M.W., a member of the Morning Star's Circle, and the Chat & Do Club, in which she held various offices.
    She enjoyed gardening, writing letters, crocheting, sewing, handcrafts, volunteering, and spending time with her family. Her greatest joy in life was giving to others and she was constantly baking and delivering her goodies to friends and relatives throughout the community.
    She is survived by a daughter: Michala (Harold) Sinning of Pine Island, MN; a son: Russell (Karen) Stevenson, Jr. of Lime Springs; five grandchildren: Robert and Christopher Sinning, Tressa Walton, and Jackie and Rodney Stevenson; and seven great-grandchildren: Paul Ringstrom, Aleasha Kreinbring, Colton, Austin, and Brooke Sinning, and Samantha and Sydney Walton; sisters: Isabell Brookins of New Hampton, and Ruth Weeks of Texas; and a brother: Francis Drewelow of New Hampton.
    Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Russell in 2001; a granddaughter: Laura; a great-grandson: Blake; her parents; four sisters; and three brothers.


Violet Brokken, 97

    Violet Brokken, 97, of Cresco, IA passed away on Monday, January 5, 2009 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco. Funeral services are currently pending at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

    Funeral services for Violet Brokken of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 9, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery in rural Cresco. 
    Violet, 97, died Monday, January 5, 2009 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.
    Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.
    Violet Brokken was born September 16, 1911 in Cresco, IA the daughter of Albert and Olga (Walter) Bigalk. She was baptized and confirmed in Zion United Methodist Church north of Cresco. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1929. Violet taught in rural one room schools for 10 years, including the Oakley School, which happened to be the same school that her father Albert and his brothers also attended.
    On June 14, 1939 she married Orlando Brokken and they farmed near Harmony, MN for 25 years, later moving to Cresco. Orlando passed away on November 28, 1975. She then lived on her own in her little red house until the age of 96 when she entered the Cresco Care Center.
    She is survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two brothers: Manly and Delbert.


Deborah Bentley, 51

 

    Visitation for Deborah L. Bentley of Arlington, TX, formerly of Cresco, IA will be held today, Wednesday, January 14, 2009 from 4-7 p.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Graveside services will be held Thursday, January 15 at 1:00 p.m. at the Phillips Cemetery in rural Cresco.
    Deborah, 51, died Tuesday, January 6, 2009.

    Deborah Lynn Bentley was born July 23, 1957, in Waterloo, IA, the daughter of Ernest and Rosetta (Murray) Bentley. Deb was very involved in speech and drama from high school in Cresco, and served as director of its community theater. She earned a B.A. and an M.A. from Northwestern Oklahoma State University and was certified in rehabilitation administration by University of Missouri, Columbia. She received many scholastic honors throughout these years including magna cum laude, Who's Who, and Alpha Psi Omega, a national honors fraternity. Deb's work with Catholic Charities began in 1993 when she managed all four of their residential properties ultimately becoming director of housing. Her extensive career in social work and education included foster parenting, managing a safe house for battered and abused women and children, legal advocacy work, case management and development, and board service on state and local levels.
    She is survived by her mother: Rosetta Stattelman and her husband, Lawrence; father: Ernest Bentley and his wife, Leona; sisters: Brenda Jungen and husband, Ron, Roxanne Titts and her fiance, Dean; brother: Brian Bentley; and best friend, Linda Stewart.
    Deborah was preceded in death by her brother: Daniel Bentley; grandparents: Mary and James Bentley, Dan and Eva Murray; and stepbrothers: DeWayne and David Thompson.


Celeste Harris, 87

    A funeral Mass for Celeste M. Harris of Charles City, IA were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Interment was in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City. 
    Friends were to call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday where the Rosary was recited at 5:30 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service was held at 7 p.m.

    Celeste, 87, died Saturday, January 10, 2009 at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
    Celeste Mae Harris was born May 16, 1921, near Elma, the daughter of Ralph and Emma (Mlady) Buckley. She attended country school and graduated from Elma Public School in 1939.
    She married her high school classmate, Harold James Harris on July 9, 1941 and moved near Elma where they farmed until 1982. The family attended church at Our Lady of Lourdes in Lourdes, and Immaculate Conception in Riceville. Celeste, a dietary cook, worked at the Colony Manor at Elma and the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City for 17 years, in addition to helping on the farm.
    Celeste especially enjoyed gardening and baking. Harold and Celeste retired to Charles City in 1982 to be near their grandchildren. Most recently she resided at Riverside Senior Living in Charles City and at Faith Home Assisted Living in Osage.
    Celeste is survived by two sons: Murray Harris and wife Linda Brant of Charles City and Loren Harris and wife Cindy of Osage; three grandchildren: Matthew Harris, Sara Harris of Mason City, and Roxanne Harris of Story City; and a great-grandson: Lucas Garl of Mason City.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold in 1993; her parents; two brothers: Garland and Chester Buckley; and a daughter-in-law: Karla Arhart Harris.
 

Steven Lines, 55

 

    Funeral services for Steven E. Lines were held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City with Pastor Dennis Niezwaag and Pastor Todd Yeaton officiating.
    Visitation was held at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, January 9, and also one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
    Fullerton Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Charles City handled the arrangements.
    Steven, 55, died Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.
    Steven Edward Lines was born February 9, 1953 the son of Guy and Jennie (Joesting) Lines. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1971 and from there set out to pursue what turned out to be a lifelong passion for accounting. He graduated in 1973 from North Iowa Area Community College and in 1975 from the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting.     
    On July 31, 1977, he married Pam Erbe in Charles City. For 34 years Steve could not only be found behind the wheel of a tractor or in the cow yard but also behind a desk. A Certified Public Accountant by trade and astute businessman he was owner of the accounting offices of Lines, Murphy Company, PLC in Osage and Nashua. He had a passion for accounting, a knack for the numbers and actually enjoyed dealing with the IRS.
    Steve was an active member of the Floyd County Cattlemen where he served as treasurer, the Osage Kiwanis, and the Charles City Elks Lodge #418.
     He is survived by his wife, Pam; one son: Robert; his sister and brother-in-law: Vickie and Dale Knutson of Centerville, SD; and his niece and nephew: Shannon and Justin Knutson.
    Steve was preceded in death by his parents: Guy and Jennie Lines; his brother: Michael, in infancy; and his in-laws: Robert and Betty Erbe.


Erma M. Wood, 93

 

    Erma Mary Wood, 93, died Friday, December 26, 2008 at her home in Cortez, CO. 
    Visitation was held at Ertel Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Ertel Funeral Home in Cortez, CO handled the cremation arrangements.
    Erma Mary Wood was born February 17, 1915 in Colton, S.D. the daughter of Matthew and Gertrude (Evans) Guckenberger.
    Erma believed in education. Her teaching career began in a one room school house. She attended one more year of college before singing professionally in a woman's trio. After raising her family, she graduated from Fort Lewis College at age 55. Erma resumed her teaching career in Cortez and retired 17 years later. Her love of learning was passed on to her children.
    Erma was a clerk for the District Court in Howard County, Iowa for 12 years. Erma was a gifted musician having been a professional singer, choir director, piano teacher, and accompanist. She was extremely gifted playing the piano.
    She is survived by her daughters: Donna Mallin and husband, Daniel of Cedar Falls and Linda Frisby and husband, Jan of Grand Junction, CO; her son: David Wood of Loveland, CO; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
    Erma was preceded in death by her former husband, Robert W. Wood; her son: Robert Wood; her grandson: Matthew Wood; and her parents.


Milo Merritt, 94

 

    Milo H. Merritt, 94, of Osage, IA died Thursday, January 8, 2009 at the Osage Rehab & Health Center. Because he wished to be cremated, there will be a gathering for family and friends at the Osage VFW, 3693 N. Hwy. #218 on Saturday, January 17 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

    Milo H. Merritt was born January 3, 1915 in Allerton, IA, the son of William Floyd Merritt and Ina Mae (Kimple) Merritt. He graduated from Strawberry Point, IA, High School. Milo then hitch-hiked to California and attended San Bernardino Junior College while earning room and board at an uncles ranch. After college, he hitch-hiked back to Iowa to help out on another uncle's farm.
    On November 25, 1937 he married Marjorie L. Eckenrod in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary one month before Marjorie died on December 21, 2007.
    After marriage, they moved to California where Milo worked for Lockheed Aircraft in the Experimental Engineering Department for eight years, until moving back to Iowa. Milo farmed in Osage and the David/Little Cedar areas before moving into Osage in 1973 where he sold real estate. Milo was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1974-1978 where he served on the Education Committee and Labor Industrial Relations Committee, was chairman of the Ethics Committee, and was co-chair of the County Government Committee and Claims Budget Sub-Committee.
    He is survived by two daughters: Phyllis Beamer and husband John of Des Moines and Janet McGovern and her husband Terry of Riceville; a son: Bruce Merritt and his wife Kathy of Massilon, OH; brother: Bob Merritt of Burleson, TX; Vern Diederich (always considered a member of the family) and his wife Mary Lou; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    Milo was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie; his parents; two brothers; and a sister.


Ellen Peters, 92

    Funeral services for Ellen E. "Libby" Peters of Fredericksburg, IA will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton. Interment will be in New Hampton City Cemetery.

Kathleen Holden, 85

 

    Memorial services for Kathleen A. Holden of Winter Haven, FL were held on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Winter Haven. Interment was in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. 
    Kathleen, 85, died Sunday, November 2, 2008 at Winter Haven Hospital of heart failure.
    Kathleen Anne Kennelly Holden was born August 31, 1923 in Cresco, IA.
    She married Frederick Israel Holden of the U.S. Army in 1954 while teaching schoolchildren in Germany. She moved here from Fort Ritchie, MD, with her husband and family in 1969 following Colonel Holden's retirement from the service. She was a substitute teacher at Saint Joseph's Catholic School and was active in the parish, serving as a member of Saint Joseph's Guild.
    She is survived by her children: Dennis Holden of Rocky Mount, VA, Susan Keegan of Vero Beach, FL, James Holden of Alexandria, VA, Timothy Holden of Brussels, Belgium, Michael Holden of Lake Wales, FL, Peter Holden of Tinley Park, IL, and Anne Holden of Winter Haven, FL; two grandchildren; and one sister: Mary Bartosik of San Diego, CA.


Esther Schuldt, 87

 

    Funeral services for Esther B. Schuldt were held on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at Hope Ridge United Methodist Church in Concord, OH. A graveside service was held Friday, January 9 and interment was held following at the Klemme Memorial Cemetery in Klemme. A celebration of Esther's life was held at the Evans family farm near Lime Springs, IA on Saturday, January 10.
    Esther, 87, died Sunday, January 4, 2009 at her residence in Mentor, OH.
    Esther Bertha Schuldt was born June 4, 1921 at her family farm near Lime Springs, IA, she lived in Yonkers, N.Y. before moving to Mentor in 1961.
    Esther was a 45-year member of Hope Ridge United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed the time she spent as a member of several bridge clubs.
    Survivors are her daughter: Linda Lorene Clayton; son: Steven Paul Schuldt; grandchildren: Erin Clayton, Eric Clayton, Kimberly Schuldt, Karly Schuldt and Trevor Schuldt.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Herman Schuldt on August 7, 1976; her parents: Herbert and Lorena Evans; sisters: Ruth Eleanor Evans, who passed away at the age of two, Eleanor Ruth Allen, and twin sister Edith Elizabeth George.

Bernard Kalvelage, 52 & Alvin Kalvelage, 48

 

    Visitation for Bernard F. Kalvelage of Lime Springs and Alvin P. Kalvelage of Lime Springs will be held from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco, IA with a 7 p.m. prayer service. Rev. Pamela Kranzler will officiate.
    Bernard Kalvelage, 52, died Tuesday, January 13, 2009 in a house fire south of Lime Springs.
    Bernard Frank Kalvelage was born at Elgin, Nebraska, on June 13, 1956, the son of Alphons and Wilhelmina (Ollendick) Kalvelage. The family moved to Cresco in the spring of 1958. He graduated from Tomah High School in Tomah, WI.
    Bernard was presently employed as a maintenance person at SMI Sawmill Division west of Cresco. He was an excellent mechanic and would fix anything he tried. He had previously worked on the garbage route, and was a carpenter with his father. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
    Alvin Kalvelage, 48, died Tuesday, January 13, 2009 in a house fire south of Lime Springs.
    Alvin Paul Kalvelage was born at Cresco, IA, on June 6, 1960, the son of Alphons and Wilhelmina (Ollendick) Kalvelage. He attended school at St. Joseph's Grade School and had to drop out of school in the 11th grade when he was seriously injured in an automobile accident and became totally disabled. He enjoyed fishing with his brother and riding his bicycle. He had been working at the Can House in Cresco for 20 years, before he retired three or four years ago.
    Bernard is survived by one son: Shawn of Elgin, MN; a step daughter: Jessica Kalvelage of Rochester, MN.
    Both are survived by one brother: Ken and his wife Tammi of Cresco; two sisters: Mildred (significant other Larry Menne) of Decorah, IA and Rose of Cresco; four nieces: Allison, Patty, Kelly and Kimberly Kalvelage; and three great-nephews: Damien, Dominic and Cameron.
    They were preceded in death by their parents, Alphons on April 23, 1999 and Minnie on March 20, 2006


Warren Harvey, 96

 

     Funeral services for Warren Harvey of Cresco, IA were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at the Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway, IA. Interment was in the Orleans Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Ridgeway.
    Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.
    Warren, 96, died Saturday, January 17, 2009 at the Evan's Memorial Home in Cresco.
    Warren Harvey was born May 28, 1912 in Winneshiek County, IA the son of Harry and Myrtle (Greenslade) Harvey. He grew up on his parent's farm in the Bluffton area.
    He married Inez Nolte on June 20, 1933 at her parent's home in Burr Oak, IA. To this union seven children were born. They farmed in the Ridgeway area until they retired in 1973.
    Warren enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and playing cards with relatives and friends.
    He is survived by his wife Inez; six children: Norman (Fae), Elaine (Ron) Ryan, Duane (Donna), Linda (Eugene) Huhe, Marlin (Cheryl), and David (Linda); 14 grandchildren; five step-grandsons; many loving great and great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law: Jenny Harvey; and a brother-in-law: Keith (Jackie) Nolte.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; a son: Ronald; two grandsons: Rodney and Ricky; a granddaughter: Roxanne; a great-grandson: Anthony; three brothers; and five sisters.


Leonard Bateman, 88

    Funeral services for Leonard L. Bateman of Downers Grove, IL were held Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Downers Grove. Inurnment will be held Tuesday, June 9, 2009 in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco with a commital service. 
    Leonard, 88, died Monday, December 8, 2008 in Downers Grove.
    Leonard Lionel Bateman was born April 27, 1920 in Cresco, IA the son of Elmer and Ella (McGee) Bateman. He attended Assumption grade school and Cresco high school, graduating in 1938. He was in the C.C.C. in 1938-39. He farmed with family from 1939-1942 and served in the Army from 1942-1945. He moved to Des Moines and worked for the Department of Iowa Highway Commission until his retirement in 1984. He served as crossing guard for the Des Moines schools from 1984-1999.
    In 1946 he married Elizabeth Rousch. They had one daughter Ellen born in 1947. Elizabeth died in 1949. Leonard married Marge Leedy in 1964 and she died in 2003. Leonard moved to Downers Grove to be with his daughter and family.
    Leonard enjoyed bowling, playing pool, exercising, biking, watching sports and gardening, along with visiting family and friends in Cresco.
    Leonard is survived by one daughter: Ellen and son-in-law, Lee Hilsabeck; granddaughter: Elizabeth and her husband, Ramon Navarro; great-granddaughter: Francesca; grandson: Ryan Hilsabeck and his wife Elizabeth; a sister: Saralee Hoselton; a sister-in-law: Helen Bateman of Cresco; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Hazel Klaes and Helen Ward; and three brothers: Kenneth, Raymond, and Walter.

Arnal Canterbury, 89

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Arnal J. Canterbury of Harmony, MN, was held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at the Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony.

George Melver, 54

    George Melver, 54, of Lime Springs, IA died on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco, IA. It was George's wish to donate his body to medical science. No funeral services will be held.

Harry Halvorson, 91

    Funeral services for Harry Halvorson of Ridgeway, IA were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at the Madison Lutheran Church. Interment was in the Madison Lutheran Church Cemetery.
    Friends were to call from 3-7 p.m. on Monday, January 19 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and after 1 p.m. at the church on Tuesday afternoon. There was a VFW memorial service at the funeral home on Monday evening at 6 p.m. 
    Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, IA handled the arrangements.
    Harry, 91, died Saturday, January 17, 2009 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Gene Lenard, 86

 

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Gene Lenard of Burnsville will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Owatonna with Father Edward McGrath officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Owatonna.
    Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the church.

    Lenard, 86, died Monday, January 19, 2009 under the care of hospice in Lodge on Summit Oaks, Burnsville.
    Gene Lenard was born April 8, 1922 in Wausau, WI, the son of Stanley and Mary (Wojtkiewich) Lenard. He was raised and attended school graduating from Wausau High School in 1941. He then attended St. John's University where he received his Bachelor Degree in Philosophy. He continued his studies at St. John's and Seminary for two years. Gene moved to Cresco, IA and became a teacher at Notre Dame High School. He taught Latin, English, History and Physical Education. In 1955, he began his professional career in LaCrosse, WI with the Boy Scouts of America where he was a district scout executive. He served on councils in St. Paul, Ottumwa, IA and Gamehaven Council in Rochester in 1965. 
    He married Joan Meyer in 1958 in Cresco. They moved to Faribault and then in 1965 to Owatonna. He continued his career as scout executive retiring after 29 years in 1984. Joan died in 1985. In 1989, Gene married Ursula Shimek in Rochester. They moved to Lake City where they made their home for 10 years. Ursula died in 2005. In 2003, Gene moved to Emerald Crest Memory Care in Burnsville.
    He was active in the Owatonna Rotary Club, the Elks Lodge, the Knights of Columbus and has served on the board of directors in the organization of the Dodge County United Way. He was a member of the Little Theatre of Owatonna, the Owatonna Art Center, the Steele County Historical Society and was Class Chairman in St. John's University Alumni Association at Collegeville, Minnesota.  Gene also served on the Owatonna City Council and Southeastern Minnesota Area Aging Council.
    Gene is survived by two daughters: Jane (Jim) Kretsch of Lakeville and Mary Birchard of  Minneapolis, MN; a son: Tom Lenard of Marshfield, WI; and seven grandchildren: Claire, Jessica, Tommy, Sebastian, Morgan, James and Amelia.
    He was preceded in death by his wife Joan, and wife, Ursula; his parents; six brothers and four sisters.


James Schmitt, 58

    A Mass of Christian Burial for James "Jim" Schmitt of Cresco, IA will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Interment will follow services on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Cemetery in Little Turkey, IA.
    Friends may call today, Wednesday, January 21 from 4-8 p.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco with a 5 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. scripture.

Evelyn Balk, 96

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Evelyn A. Balk of Lawler, IA was held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. David M. Beckman officiating. The pall was placed on the casket by her five children. Lector was Maxine Balk. The offertory gifts were carried by Marlys Smith and Nancy Baker. Ruth McKone was the organist and Sherri Achen was the vocalist. Pallbearers were: Gary Schmitt, Robert Smith, Richard Balk, Leo Balk, Gerald Balk and Marlin Balk. Interment was in St. Rose Cemetery in rural Waucoma.
    Friends were to call 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, January 20 at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Lawler where there was a 4 p.m. rosary and a 6 p.m. parish scripture service. Visitation continued for one hour prior to the Mass at church on Wednesday.

    Evelyn, 96, died Sunday morning, January 18, 2009 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
    Evelyn Ann Balk was born October 25, 1912, in rural Winneshiek County near Protivin, IA, the daughter of George and Ida (Jirak) Bouska. She attended rural country school near their home east of Protivin.
    On June 25, 1935, she married Leo Ulrich Balk at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
    Evelyn and her husband farmed their entire married lives east of Lawler. Leo died October 9, 1999. Evelyn loved being on the farm raising chickens and tending to her vegetable and flower gardens. Working on the farm gave her great joy.
    Survivors include four sons: Joe Balk, Allen (Neoma) Balk, all of Little Turkey, Melvin Balk and Marvin Balk, both of Lawler; one daughter: Marvelene Schmitt (Jene Smith) of Ft. Atkinson, IA; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son-in-law: Ernest Schmitt; a great-grandson: Philip Hayek; one brother: Frank Bouska; and one sister: Edna Praska.

James Schmitt, 58

    A Mass of Christian Burial for James "Jim" L. Schmitt of Cresco, IA was held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Interment followed services at 2:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Cemetery in Little Turkey, IA.

    James, 58, died Sunday, January 18, 2009 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, MN after a year long battle with cancer.
    James Louis Schmitt was born June 25, 1950 at St. Joseph's Hospital in New Hampton, IA, the son of Vern and Irene (Kriener) Schmitt. He attended Holy Trinity Grade School and Rudolphinum High School in Protivin, IA. After attending North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, he was drafted into the Army where he served two years in Viet Nam as a Military Policeman. After returning home, he received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from University of Northern Iowa. His love of farming brought him back to Jackson Junction where he worked for local farmers and eventually moved to the Cresco area.
    On July 16, 1977, he married Deborah Ann Peters at Blessed Sacrament Church in St. Paul, MN. They made their home in Cresco.
    Jim was active in the Notre Dame Parish at Cresco as a Eucharistic minister and choir member. What he loved most were family gatherings, scouting with his son, working in his yard, and hunting with friends and family.
    He is survived by his wife, Deborah of Cresco; one son: Michael and wife Megan of Marion, IA; brothers and sisters: Joanie Schmitt-Reagan (Michael) of Vacaville, CA; Jerry Schmitt (Kristi) of Newport Beach, CA; Judy Schmitt of Annville, KY; Mark Schmitt (Suzanne) of Sergeant Bluff, IA; Carol Steinbeiser (Craig) of Allen, TX; and Jean Wiemann (Leon) of Meservey, IA; and several nieces and nephews: Shannon and Casey Reagan; Kayla, Kelsey and Ryan Schmitt; Adam, Jason, Tyler and Megan Schmitt; and Krista, Scott and Justin Steinbeiser.
    Jim is preceded in death by his parents: Vern and Irene Schmitt.

Lt. Col. William Frankhauser, 66

 

    Funeral services for Lt. Col. William E. Frankhauser of Pinellas Park, FL were held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 9, 2009 at the Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home. A viewing was held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. preceding the funeral. Interment was in Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

    Lt. Col. William Frankhauser, 66, died Monday, January 5, 2009 at Northside Hospital.
    He was born in Harvey, ND. He recieved a B.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Arizona State University in 1970 and a Master’s degree in Human Resource Management from Pepperdine University. He was a United States Air Force veteran and retired as the Directorate of Logistics and Security Assistance, United States Central Command.
    He is survived by his wife, Aurora; daughter: Anita E. Frankhauser; three sisters: Darlene M. Rue, Corienne F. Knowles-Ashley, and Diana K. Briske, all of Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.


Lois Anderson, 90

    Lois W. Anderson, 90, of Calmar, IA died Monday, January 19, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN after a long illness. At Lois' request, no service was held.
    The Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa handled the arrangements.
    Lois W. Anderson was born October 12, 1918 in Landis, Canada the daughter of Elbert and Annie Russell.
    She married Ted Albertson on December 24, 1941. He died November 5, 1950. She then married Herman Anderson on July 15, 1957 in Wichita Falls, TX. He died April 28, 2002. Lois taught school in several one room school houses as well as at Turkey Valley, Decorah, and South Winneshiek school districts. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
    Lois enjoyed numerous hobbies which included calligraphy, poetry, singing and song writing, reading, writing children's books and many more activities.
    Lois is survived by three children, son: Tyrome (Beverlyne) Albertson of Cresco and their children, Jamin, Daniel, and Aaron; two daughters: Tresha (Michael) Kuennen of Calmar and their children, Amber, Carrie, Amy, Brian, Travis, and Nichole; and Candi (Dale) Nelson of Calmar and their children, Dallas, Ryan, Justin, and Laurie; sisters: Manetta Hertle of Indiana, Ida Marian Griffin of Stuart, and Juanita Putney of Indianola; and eleven great-grandchildren.
    Lois was preceded in death by two husbands, Ted Albertson and Herman Anderson; and a brother: Burl.

Virgil Drilling, 79

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Virgil C. Drilling of Oelwein, formerly of New Hampton, IA was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 23, 2009 at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center in New Hampton. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton.
    Friends were to call beginning at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church.

    Virgil, 79, died Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at the Oelwein Health Care Center.

Harry Halverson, 91

    Funeral services for Harry Halverson of Ridgeway, IA were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at the Madison Lutheran Church. Interment was in the Madison Lutheran Church Cemetery.
    Friends were to call from 3-7 p.m. on Monday, January 19 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and after 1 p.m. at the church on Tuesday afternoon. There was a VFW memorial service at the funeral home on Monday evening at 6 p.m.

Mary Johnson, 81

    Funeral services for Mary C. Johnson of New Hampton, IA were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 26, 2009 at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center in New Hampton. Interment was in the Madison Lutheran Church Cemetery.
    Friends were to call from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, January 25 at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton. Visitation continued for one hour prior to the service at church on Monday.
