ALBERT LEA, MN - Funeral services for Marcella A. Ferrie of Albert Lea, Minn. were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at St. Theodore's Catholic Church in Albert Lea. Interment was held in St. Theodore's Cemetery in Albert Lea.

Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home in Albert Lea handled the arrangements.

Marcella, 74, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012.

Marcella Ferrie was a sister-in-law to Joe Ferrie and Cecil Ferrie and Jeanne Hyke.


Valery Gebel, 90

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Valery "Val" E. Gebel of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1 with a scripture wake service following at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Valery, 90, died Sunday, April 29, 2012 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Valery E. Gebel was born Feb. 15, 1922, in New Hampton, the daughter of Nick and Dora (Papenheim) Schwickerath. She graduated from high school at North Washington, Iowa.

On April 22, 1941, she married Jerome Gebel. They farmed until Jan. 1, 1959 when they purchased the pool hall and tavern in Lime Springs. After the death of her husband, she continued the operation until retirement in 1986.

She loved to make quilts and was a willing worker at the Lidtke Mill. She served as office manager and treasurer of the mill for a number of years and also served on the Spring Apt. board.

Val is survived by her children: Joan (Richard) Bessingpas of Preston, Iowa, Jane (Tom) Koudeka of Osage, Ronald (Linda) Gebel of North Branch, Minn., Roger (Donna) Gebel of Andover, Minn., and Janel (Dave) Turvold of Cresco; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and brothers: Paul, Richard, and Wilbert Schwickerath all of New Hampton.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1966; her parents; a sister: Mildred who died in infancy; a granddaughter and grandson; and a brother.


Eric Williamson, 48

IOWA CITY - Funeral services for Eric M. Williamson of Iowa City were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 23, 2012 at St. Patrick's Church in Iowa City with The Very Reverend Rudolph T. Juarez officiating. Pallbearers were: Jay Williamson, Mike Tallroth, Mike Silva, Charlie Pritchard, Shad Hubbard, Bill Qvern, AJ Qvern and Kyle Walton.

Eric, 48, died Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Eric Matthew Williamson was born March 31, 1964 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, the youngest son of Harold E. and Joan L. (Chase) Williamson. He attended Iowa City Schools, graduating from City High School in 1982 and from the University of Iowa College of Engineering with his BSEE degree in 1988.

On Dec. 30, 1989, he married DaLayne C. Qvern in Cresco. As a lifelong resident of Iowa City, he worked for the former Eagle Foods for over 20 years working from a bagboy to management positions locally and in the Quad Cities. Upon their closing he worked for a short time at Lowes, and most recently for a number of years worked from home in the health insurance area for Mercer Administration in Iowa City.

He was very involved in his children's activities. He was an enthusiastic "dance dad" for Grace and a participant with Zach's Boy Scout activities. He and Zach were both inducted into the order of the Arrow. He was a volunteer in the library at Horace Mann Elementary and assisted at the Religious Education Program at Regina.

Eric was an avid collector and painter of toy soldiers with an emphasis on the Battle of Waterloo. He created a large 1/72 scale diorama of the battle over many years. While in school he played trumpet in the South East Junior High and City High bands and orchestras. He was proud to be his children's first trumpet teacher and duet partner. The family enjoyed traveling both in the US and abroad, including a recent visit to London for Christmas where his sister lives and visits to Norway, Iceland, Chamonix, England, Iowa Hawkeye Bowl Games with Eric's father and road trips to Bemidji, Minn.

Eric is survived by his wife, DaLayne; two children: Zach and Grace; his father: Harold Williamson; his sister and her husband: Julie Williamson and John Pritchard and their son, Charlie Pritchard of London, England; his brother and wife: Tim and Judie Williamson of Houston, Texas and their daughter, Kelsey; his father and mother-in-law: Bob and Diane Qvern of Cresco; his sister-in-law: Patricia Qvern and her daughter Claire and son AJ of Papillion, Neb; and brother-in-law: Bill Qvern of Tampa, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his mother: Joan Williamson in 2001.


Delores Buck, 81

CRESCO - Delores Buck, 81 of Cresco passed away on Monday, April 30, 2012 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco, with her family by her side. Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 3 from 4-7 p.m. with a scripture service at 7 p.m. There will be no other public services held.

Delores Louise Buck was born on July 15, 1930 in Mason City, the daughter of Clifford and Lucille (Turnbull) Swender.

On Sept. 6, 1952, she married Richard O. Buck, Sr. at St. Nicholas Parish in Evansdale, Iowa. They traveled many places during her husband's 20 years of service with the Marine Corp, and then settled down in Cresco in 1970 to raise their family.

She enjoyed bowling, card club, gambling, crossword puzzles, going out to eat, and reading. She worked 25 years as a playground supervisor at Crestwood Elementary.

Delores is survived by her husband Richard "Buck" of Cresco; four children: DeeAnna Collier of Amery, Wis., Richard Jr. (Rochel) of Cresco, Becky (Greg) Creger of Cresco, and Deb (Brad) Curtis of Kasson, Minn.; her grandchildren: Kerrie (Dan) Clark, Crystal (Brad) Stevenson, Kelsey Buck, Megan, Mallory, and Molly Creger, and Mitchell Curtis; six great-grandchildren; one sister: Dorothy (Walt) Brockway of Waterloo; and one brother: Chuck (Karolyn) Swender of Evansdale.

She was preceded in death by a daughter: Kathy; her parents; and a sister: Millie Powell.


Shirley Chihak, 81

CEDAR RAPIDS - Funeral services for Shirley A. Chihak of Cedar Rapids were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids with Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Interment was held in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids handled the arrangements.

Shirley, 81, died at her home.

Shirley Ann Chihak was born May 9, 1930 in Elma, the daughter of Mathias and Grace (Hunemiller) Palmersheim. She graduated from Elma High School.

On Sept. 9, 1952, she married Paul Peter Chihak in Elma.

Shirley enjoyed gardening and treasured spending quality time with her family. She attended St. Jude Catholic Church.

Shirley is survived by three daughters: Nancy (Ray) Scienzo of Concord, N.H., Joan (Paul) Cook of Palatine, Ill. and Lori (Marvin) Wilmes of Boone; five sons: David (Sharon) Chihak of Cedar Rapids, Michael (Barbara) Chihak of Florissant, Mo., Alan (Yvonne) Chihak of Burr Ridge, Ill., Carl (Zenny) Chihak of Long Beach, Calif. and Roger (Candace) Chihak of Lisbon; 18 grandchildren: Matthew, Jeremy, John, Jilani, Slyndon, Samadhi, Chris, Caroline, Camille, Abigail, Mildred, Paul, Charlie and Quincy Chihak, Christina and Zack Scienzo, and Wesley and Casey Wilmes; two sisters: Rita Rosauer and Mary (Paul) Reuter; sister-in-law: Mary Valvoda; brother: Ronald (Helen) Palmersheim; brother-in-law: Robert (Eileen) Chihak; and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband Paul; a sister: Donna Williams; brothers-in-law: Don Rosauer, Vern Williams, Raymond Valvoda, and Joseph Chihak; and sister-in-law: Marlene Chihak.

Warren Proctor, 86

CRESCO - A memorial service for Warren L. Proctor of Cresco was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 27, 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Warren, 86, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012.

Warren Lynn Proctor was born March 3, 1926, in Clear Lake, Iowa, the son of Charles and Nellie Proctor. After serving in the US Army in World War II, he graduated from Upper Iowa University. He started his lifelong career in the school business teaching and coaching in Walford and then Swaledale, Iowa. After receiving a Master's Degree at the University of Iowa he became the superintendent of schools in Rock Falls, Iowa. In 1955, he moved to Cresco where he held the positions of teacher, High School Principal, Assistant Superintendent and Business Manager until he retired in 1988. It was in Cresco where he raised his family and formed the lasting friendships that he enjoyed until his death. He was a member of the Cresco United Methodist Church. He spent many hours playing golf and bridge and socializing at the Cresco Country Club.

Warren was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed playing baseball, basketball and golf and was an enthusiastic spectator of Crestwood High School athletics. He rooted tirelessly for the Hawks, Cyclones, Bears and especially his prized Chicago Cubs.

Warren is survived by his wife, LuCille (Gilbert) Proctor; three daughters: Cyndy Clement and husband Brad of Marshalltown, Iowa and Scottsdale, Ariz., Sheila Ware of Euless, Texas and Scottsdale, Ariz., and Leslie Allcorn and husband Michael of McKinney, Texas; four grandchildren: Alexa Harting and husband Eric of Denton, Texas; Andrew Howard of Minneapolis, Minn.; Joseph Morgenstern and wife Emily of Richardson, Texas; and Zane Allcorn of Dallas, Texas; and was also the great-grandfather of Jane, Ben and Ellen Harting and Merritt Morgenstern.

Darlene Gerleman, 84

MT. PLEASANT - Funeral services for Darlene P. Gerleman of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Lockridge were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 7, 2012 at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant with Father Joseph Phung officiating. Interment was held in St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery.

Friends were to call after 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with a Rosary at 5 p.m. followed by family receiving friends until 7 p.m.

Darlene, 84, died Friday, May 4, 2012 at Arbor Court Nursing Home surrounded by her family.

Darlene P. Gerleman was born Sept. 4, 1927, in Cresco, the daughter of Earl L. and Dora M. (Ernst) Stevens. She attended Cresco Schools and attended Cosmetology School.

On Oct. 15, 1949 she married Edwin A. Gerleman in Cresco.

Darlene had a paper route, was a beautician for many years and retired from Metromail in 1987. She was the book keeper for her husband's construction company. She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, gardening, flowers, wildlife and search word puzzles.

Darlene is survived by three sons: James (Myrna), Thomas (Kim), and Ronald (Krista), all of Lockridge; four daughters: Ann Johnson (Jerry), of Nixa, Mo., Kathleen Kessel (John) of Fairfield, Sandra Spees (Steve) of Birmingham and Barbara Neff (Larry) of Lockridge; 13 grandchildren; seven

great-grandchildren; and a brother: Earl Stevens of West Bend, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin on April 2, 2006; one son: Robert; her parents; and a sister: Ione.

Memorials may be directed to the Lockridge First Responders, Hospice of Central Iowa and to the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.


Russell Blomgren, 64

NORFOLK, VA - Russell "Butch" M. Blomgren, 64, died Thursday, May 3, 2012 in Norfolk, Va. following a lengthy illness. A private service will be held Friday, May 11, 2012 at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Va.

Russell Marvin Blomgren was born June 30, 1947 in Cresco, the son of Marvin and Virginia (Wilhelm) Blomgren. He graduated from Crestwood High School in 1965. He lived in the Cresco and Lime Springs area until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966.

On Oct. 8, 1969, he married Sun Pun on a military base in South Korea. Russell made a career of the Army and was stationed in several areas overseas and in the United States. He retired from the Army in 1986 as a Sergeant First Class. In 1987 he returned to government employment in the Department of Defense in supplies and operations in the Alexandria, Va. and Washington, D.C. areas where he and his family had resided since 1982. Russell retired from that position in 2007 and they moved to Newport News, Va.

Russell is survived by his wife Sun Pun; daughter: Kathryn Blackwell and her friend, Fabian Lopez of Virginia; sisters: Irene (Duane Eiffler and Carla (Bruce) Fortney of Lime Springs and Wanda (Arlynn) Hovey of Preston, Minn.; five nephews; two great-nephews; and four great-nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Agnes Driscoll, 96

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Agnes M. Driscoll of Cresco was held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Agnes, 96, died Monday, May 7, 2012 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Agnes M. Driscoll was born Feb. 22, 1916, in Fort Atkinson, the daughter of William L. and Mary Ann (Malek) Hyke. She attended Our Lady of Lourdes School in Lourdes, Iowa.

Agnes married Albert “Bussey” Hallman and together they worked for Rath Packing Company in Waterloo. After a few years they settled in Cresco, buying the original Hallman home. Bussey passed away in 1957 at a young age.

On June 23, 1959, she married Michael “Mickey” Driscoll. On the Driscoll farm, she enjoyed cooking, planting flowers and fishing until they moved to Cresco in 1974. Mickey passed away in 1999.

Agnes was a very social person who loved visiting with people and chatting on the phone. She liked following current events, tennis, and “Dancing With the Stars” on TV. Most of all, Agnes adored being with her family, especially her nieces and nephews, treating them like her daughters and sons.

Agnes is survived by three sisters: Jane Hudson of Cresco, Clara McKeown of Rochester, Minn. and Genevieve Buker of Cresco; one brother: Charles Hyke of Waterloo; nieces: Bernice Ollendieck of Cresco, Shirley Berglund of Denver, Colo., Marion Samec of Cedar Rapids and Mary Ann Wildman of Elkader; nephews: Robert Hyke of Phoenix, Ariz., James Hruska of Cresco; and several other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands: Albert Hallman and Michael Driscoll; an infant daughter; her parents; four brothers: Benjamin, Leonard, William, and Clem Hyke; and several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.


Julie Gnewuch, 72

GREEN LAKE, WI - Julie Ann Gnewuch, 72 of Green Lake, Wis., died Friday, May 4, 2012 at her home. Julie donated her body to research at Mayo Clinic, inurnment will occur later at Cresco. Private services will be held at a later date for family and friends.

Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home in Ripon, Wis. is handling the arrangements.

Julie Ann Gnewuch was born on Oct. 1, 1939, the daughter of Ted and Helen (Ptacek) Lickteig of Cresco.

On June 12, 1999, she married C. Thomas Gnewuch, PhD. They divided their time between Green Lake and Dillon, Colo. as Julie Ann was an avid skier, hiker and bicyclist.

Julie Ann completed her BS in Dietetics at the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, Minn., her Dietetic Internship at St. Mary's Hospital/Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. and her MS in Educational Administration at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She was accepted as a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Lambda Theta in recognition of her academic achievement. As a life-long member of the American Dietetic Association, Julie Ann was an active participant in two sub-specialties, the Sports Nutrition and Culinary Practice Groups, speaking at national and regional workshops and conventions. Her professional expertise was recognized when she was accepted as a Fellow of the American Dietetic Association in 1999.

Julie Ann devoted her life to the profession of dietetics. Basing out of Milwaukee, she held positions as a clinical dietitian, directed university and nursing home foodservices, school lunch programs, summer camps, Olympic feeding operations and catering; she was a research collaborator for the US Navy, Army, Department of Agriculture, and the Colorado Altitude Research Institute. As Associate Professor, Julie Ann's full and part-time teaching at Cardinal Stritch University totaled 36 years. For 14 years she was affiliated part-time with Colorado Mountain College and the Rocky Mountain Culinary Program at Keystone, where she was recognized with an outstanding faculty award. In 2012 she was honored as a 50-year member of the Wisconsin Dietetic Association.

Julie Ann will best be remembered as a pioneer in field research involving nutrition and the logistics of food management at altitude, especially for groups. After 12 years of co-leading backpacking and climbing trips in the US, Julie Ann personally summited Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa and Mt. Kosciusko in Australia, the highest on those two continents. She was affiliated with dietetics on all seven continents, culminating in two expeditionary trips to Mt. Everest, Nepal and one visit on the Tibetan side. Julie Ann planned and organized food and menus for two Alaskan Mt. McKinley climbs, 9 Nepalese/Tibetan Expeditions, and the first Women's Expedition to the South Pole in 1992-93. As a research member of the "On Top Everest '89" expedition, Julie Ann directed the foodservice at base camp for two and half months.

Known for her food and travel presentations, Julie Ann continued to share her research at sports nutrition workshops, conferences, and through numerous publications in professional journals, books, and magazines. Her alma mater, the College of St. Benedict in Minnesota, honored her with the Distinguished Alumna Award in 1986.

Of great importance to Julie Ann was the time she spent at the family farm in Iowa and with her friends; she loved to cultivate friendships from the time of her boarding school years at Good Counsel Academy, Mankato, Minn., college, dietetic internship, and continuing throughout her life with many world-wide contacts.

Julie Ann and her husband Tom were very active in the Green Lake Festival of Music and served as co-chairs of the Friends of the Festival. She organized a memorable weekend trip to Spillville, Iowa, where the composer Dvorak spent the summer of 1893. Julie Ann and Tom were honored as Distinguished Friends of the Festival in 2012.

Julie Ann is survived by her husband, Tom Gnewuch of Green Lake, Wis.; a brother: David Lickteig of Ellensburg, Wash.; and a nephew: Eric Lickteig of Vail, Colo.

Julie Ann was preceded in death by her mother: Helen Lickteig in 1998; her father: Theodore Lickteig in 2004; and grandparents: Louis and Frances Ptacek and Peter H. and Barbara Lickteig.

Francis Bouska, 84

OCALA, FL - Francis "Bus" Bouska, 84, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Cresco, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012 in Ocala, Fla. Interment was held in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.

Francis Bouska was born in 1927 the son of E.J. and Susan (Lusson) Bouska in Howard County, Iowa. He had two older sisters, Wilma (Weinkauf) and Rose (Billmyer), and one older brother, Thomas, all of Cresco. The family farmed south of Cresco.

At the young age of seventeen, he joined the US Merchant Marine during World War II and served on a ship that transferred prisoners and US personnel from North Carolina to the south of France, stopping in England on the return trip to bring home injured soldiers. After the war, he came back to the farm until the start of the Korean Conflict, when he joined the Army, serving in the artillery. He was one of the observers of the first nuclear artillery explosion at the Nevada Test Site. After leaving the Army, he returned to Cresco and helped his parents farm while working for many years in the Howard County Assessor's office. During this time, he met and married Doris Roberts, who had one child, Terry Roberts. He and Doris loved to fish and they enjoyed the river at Frenchman's Landing, Wis., where they kept a trailer.

They were also long-time school bus drivers for the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District. When he retired from the Assessor's office, they moved to Mountain Home, in the Arkansas Ozarks south of Branson, Mo., to take advantage of the many fishing opportunities there. Eventually, they moved to Ocala, Fla., to be closer to Doris' daughter and grandchildren. In 2008, Doris died, but Francis remained in Ocala.

He is survived by his nephew: David Billmyer of North Port, Fla., who was a great help to him during his final illness; his nieces: Kay (Terry) Eckerman and Amy Bouska, both of Cresco; and his step-daughter: Terry Barco of Alachua, Fla. and her children.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; his parents; and his brother and sisters.

Charlotte Culbert, 92

CRESCO – Memorial services for Charlotte O. Culbert of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 21, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. Interment was held in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Friends were to call on Sunday from 4:30-7 p.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour before services at the church.

Charlotte, 92, died Sunday, May 13, 2012 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Charlotte Olga Culbert was born Aug. 22, 1919, in rural Saude, Iowa, the daughter of Henry Oliver and Clara (Vaala) Borlaug. She attended local schools and graduated from Cresco High School. The following two years she taught country school in New Oregon Township near Saude.

On June 2, 1940, she married Leonard C. Culbert at the Saude Lutheran Church. Charlotte was a homemaker, director of the Peter Pan Daycare before her retirement. She enjoyed many activities and clubs including United Methodist Church, UMW, teaching Sunday school, the Oak Lawn Cemetery Association, Howard County Historical Society, 20th Century Club, the Cedar Falls Retired School Personal and visiting with her many friends.

Charlotte lived her entire life in Howard County except for a few months after marriage. It was said that Charlotte and Leonard not only raised crops and livestock on their farm northwest of Cresco but lots of love.

Survivors include a daughter: Jeannine Horton of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two sons: Rodney and his wife Patricia of Warsaw, Minn. and L. B. "Bud" and his wife Sherry of Granite Shoals, Texas; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband: Leonard in 1997; a son-in-law: David Horton in 2012; her parents; a brother: Norman Borlaug; and a sister Palma Behrens.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: Norman Borlaug Heritage Foundation, Cresco United Methodist Church or Saude Lutheran Church.

Janet Menzel, 68

FORT DODGE - Funeral services for Janet R. Menzel of Fort Dodge were held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 25, 2012 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge with Rev. Steve Peters and Rev. Richard Menzel officiating. Interment will be held at a later date at Howard Cemetery in Elma, Iowa.

Visitation was held on Thursday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home in Fort Dodge.

Janet, 68, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge.

Janet Ruth Menzel was born July 28, 1943, in El Paso, Texas, the daughter of Dinsmore and Ruth (Bailard) Brandmill. As a young child she moved with her family to Elma, Iowa, a town named after her grandmother, Elma Potter. She attended schools there and later graduated from Crestwood High School in Cresco. Janet attended Rochester Junior College in Rochester, Minn., and then continued her studies at the University of Iowa. Following her education she went to work in the Public Relations Department at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

On Nov. 22, 1969 she married Robert K. Menzel and they made their home in Cedar Rapids. They lived briefly in Mason City, before moving to Fort Dodge in 1978. For several years Jan was the office administrator for the Crocker Claims office the couple co-owned and also worked for Levien Chevrolet. In 1982, Janet went to work for the Fort Dodge Public Schools as a Library Associate at Phillips Middle School and later Fair Oaks Middle School before retiring in 2000. The couple spent their winters at Sunlake Estates in Grand Island, Fla.

Janet was a volunteer for the Fort Dodge Public Library and was very active at Trinity United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge. She enjoyed playing golf, bridge, and participating in craft club. Jan loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Janet is survived by her husband, Bob of Fort Dodge; son: Bruce Menzel and his wife Michele of Maple Grove, Minn.; daughter: Jodi Spencer and her husband Tom of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren: Jae and Ty of Maple Grove, Minn.; Malia, Gray, and Hadley of Raleigh, N.C.; her sister: June Judge of Iowa City; and a sister-in-law: Janet Brandmill of Quincy, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother: Jack Brandmill.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity United Methodist Church or to the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home, both in Fort Dodge.



Velma Hanson, 94

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Velma B. Hanson of Cresco will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service on Saturday at the church.

Velma, 94, died Saturday, May 26, 2012 in Cresco.

Velma B. Hanson, better known to everyone as Grams, was born July 2, 1917, in Southern Minnesota, the daughter of Glen and Barbara (Schwindt) Broadwell. They moved to Mallard, Iowa where she completed third grade and Emmetsburg, Iowa where she graduated from high school.

On her 18th birthday, she married Lawrence E. Hanson. They were married 70 years and worked side by side. When they first married the couple ran a gas station and then farmed. In 1958, they moved to Cresco and purchased the Gamble Hardware Store, which they ran for 14 years. On weekends Velma helped Lawrence when he worked at the Frankville Cheese Factory, admitting she loved the cheese curds he made on those weekends.

In the last 10 years Grams went daily with her daughter to work at Up & Running Electronics/The Willows, helping when she could.

Velma collected Bells and had accumulated over 500 of them. She loved to sew, crochet, and keep her mind sharp by figuring out crossword puzzles. Velma enjoyed when the 3:00 p.m. coffee club would come in to visit at the store.

She is survived by two children: LuVerne of Forest City, and Rhonda (Dale) Vrba of Cresco; eight grandchildren: Toni (Virgil) Krug, Patsy (Gene) Pavelka, Becky (Lyle) Hanson, Mark Hanson, Bobbie (Mark) Hatlestad, Shawn (Gayle) Hanson, Scott (Connie) Vrba, and Gina Vrba; 11 great-grandchildren: Sara, Amber, Tyler, Mirah, Logan, Steven, Aaron, Megan, Jared, Franklin, and Amanda; and two great-great-grandchildren: Jordan and Grace.



Adah Hunziker, 81

NEWTON - Funeral services for Adah L. Hunziker of Newton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at the Sully Community Church in Sully.

Visitation was held 3-7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 28 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton where the family was present from 6-7:30 p.m.

Adah, 81, died Thursday, May 24, 2012 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Adah Louise Huniziker was born Nov. 21, 1930, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert and Jessie Ellen (Brubaker) Worthy. She graduated from Grinnell High School in 1948.

On Sept. 28, 1948, she married Ernest C. Hunziker in Troy, Kansas. They farmed together for many years until moving to Pella in 2005. After she moved to Newton in 2009, Adah enjoyed spending time with her sister Donna.

Adah was a member of the Killduff United Methodist Church. She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and playing solitaire. She took great pride in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Adah was a warm, good-hearted person who enjoyed talking with and listening to others. She was a practical woman who carried a wonderful sense of humor.

She is survived by three children: Nancy (Jerry) Slegh of Prairie City, Bonnie (Stan) Vander Weerdt of Searsboro, and Mark (Nancy) Hunziker of Cresco; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and her sister: Donna Holland of Newton.

Adah was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie in 2008; son: Charles Louis Hunziker; her parents; three brothers: Keith, Curtis and Robert Worthy; and six sisters: Arlene Worthy, Darlene Worthy, Marjorie Cloyd, Vivian Foster, Francene Sears and Charlotte Rudkin.

Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross or the organization of the donor's choice.



Raymond Elder, 55

RIDGEWAY - Graveside services for Raymond "Ray" N. Elder of Ridgeway will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at the Phillips Cemetery in rural Bonair, Iowa.

Visitation was held Tuesday, May 29 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and will continue today, Wednesday, May 30 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Ray, 55, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at his home.

Raymond Neil Elder was born Jan. 13, 1957, the son of Allen and Vivian (Fitzgerald) Elder.

Ray spent much of his life running a dairy farm with his parents. Farming was something Ray enjoyed, and you could never find him far from livestock of some sort or fixing equipment.

Ray enjoyed fishing, hunting, especially coon hunting with his old dog Sam, and a deep running passion in the horse business. Undoubtable one of the most renowned hoof trimmers (cattle/horse) of his time, Ray also spent many years being the best in his class, his true passion, and riding, driving and breaking horses.

Ray is survived by his mother: Vivian Elder; a brother: Michael Elder; two daughters: Karrie (Elder) McClellan and Holly Elder; and one granddaughter: Charlotte McClellan.

Ray was preceded in death by his father.


Marie Heying, 87

ALTA VISTA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Marie "Tuts" E. Heying of Alta Vista will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes with Father Ray Atwood officiating. Pallbearers are LaVerne Cerwinske, Richard Friedhof, Larry Heying, Raymond Kobliska, Leo Deutsch and Tom Deutsch. Interment will be held in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at Alta Vista.

Visitation will be held today, Wednesday, May 30 from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma with a rosary at 4 p.m. and scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Marie, 87, died Friday, May 25, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Marie Elizabeth Heying was born Jan. 25, 1925, at rural North Washington, the daughter of Bernard and Cecilia (Hess) Deutsch. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Church and received her education at St. Mary's Parochial School in North Washington, Iowa.

On October 9, 1946 she and Andrew (Dick) Heying were married by Rev. Louis Gereleman at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington. The couple moved to the Jerico, Iowa area where they farmed until 1993 when they retired and moved to Alta Vista.

Marie was a homemaker and also loved to be in the great outdoors with her husband. Her hobbies included writing poetry, sewing, playing cards with their friends, and gardening and flowers. An avid photographer, she and her husband enjoyed traveling and meeting new people. She had a great sense of humor and one of her favorite expressions was "Think Positive". She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and Rosary Society. She served for many years on the Howard County Election Board and various other committees in church and community.

Marie is survived by sisters-in-law: Marie Deutsch of New Hampton, Evelyn Deutsch of New Hampton, Gert Freidhof of Elma, and Alice (Ray) Freidhof of Waterloo; brother-in-law: Mike (Arlene) Heying of Alta Vista; also many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Andrew on January 27, 2003; her parents; one sister: Sister Mary Cecily O.S.F., Dubuque; brothers: Maurice, Victor, Carl, Henry, and Francis; in-laws: Elaine, Florence, and Evelyn Duetsch, Matt and Agnes Cerwinske, Ray and Eleanor Webb, Linus and Rita Heying, Norbert Heying, and Louis Heying.

Memorials may be given to the Howard County and Chickasaw County Food Shelves.
