Jose Antonio Uribe Vazquez

Funeral services for Jose Antonio Uribe Vazquez of Fredericksburg will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, January 5 at Holy Family Parish-St Joseph Center in New Hampton with Rev. Leon Connelly the Chair of Archdiocesan Hispanic Ministry concelebrating with Msgr. Carl Schmitt of Holy Family Parish in New Hampton and Rev. John Harpel of St. Fredericks Catholic Church in Fredericksburg.

Jose Antonio Uribe Vazquez, 20, died Thursday, December 30, 2004 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Cedar Rapids.

Jose Antonio Uribe Vazquez was born January 9, 1984 in Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico, the son of Jose Luis Uribe Garcia and Agueda Vazquez Zepeda. He immigrated from Mexico on September 15, 1987 and along with his family settled in the Fredericksburg area. He was a May 18, 2003 graduate of the Fredericksburg High School. While attending school in Fredericksburg he was a member of the football team and was the starting place kicker.

In February of 2004 he brought his girlfriend Gabriela Botello Lara to the United States where she joined him in Fredericksburg. There the couple started a family.

He is survived by his parents: Jose Luis Uribe Garcia and Agueda Vazquez Zepeda of Fredericksburg; paternal grandparents: Nicolas Urib Mmartinez and Ninfa Garcia Vega; maternal grandparents: Teresa Zepeda Pena and Ruben Vazquez Gonzales; three brothers: Adalberto, Jesus and Fernando Uribe, all of Fredericksburg; two sisters: Anayeli and Carmela Uribe, also of Fredericksburg.

Antonio De Jesus Uribe, one month and one day old, died Thursday, December 30, 2004 from injures sustained in an automobile accident in Cedar Rapids.

Antonio was born November 29, 2004 in New Hampton, the son of Jose Antonio Uribe Vazquez and Gabriela Botello Lara who also died in the accident.

He is survived by his paternal grandparents: Jose Luis Uribe Garcia and Agueda Vazquez Zepeda of Fredericksburg; maternal grandparents: Juan Botello Morales and Maria De Jesus Lara Martinez of Mexico.

Jose Luis Uribe Vazquez Jr, 10, died Thursday, December 30, 2004 from injures sustained in an automobile accident in Cedar Rapids.

Jose Luis Uribe Vazquez Jr. was born September 29, 1993 in Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico, the son of Jose Luis Uribe Garcia and Agueda Vazquez Zepeda. He joined his family in Fredericksburg at a very young age. Jose began Kindergarten in Fredericksburg and was currently in the fifth grade.

He enjoyed singing and dancing and also played percussion instruments.

He is survived by his parents: Jose Luis Uribe Garcia and Agueda Vazquez Zepeda of Fredericksburg; paternal grandparents: Nicolas Uribe Martinez and Ninfa Garcia Vega; maternal grandparents: Teresa Zepeda Pena and Ruben Vazquez Gonzales; three brothers: Adalberto, Jesus, and Fernando Uribe, all of Fredericksburg; and two sisters: Anayeli and Carmela Uribe, also of Fredericksburg.

Gabriela, 21, died Thursday, December 30, 2004 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Cedar Rapids.

Gabriela Botello Lara was born September 22, 1983 in Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico, the daughter of Juan Botello Morales and Maria De Jesus Lara Martinez. She came to Fredericksburg in February of 2004 to be with her true love, Jose Antonio Uribe Vazquez. They were beginning to establish their new home.

She is survived by her parents: Juan Botello Morales and Maria De Jesus Lara Martinez of Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico; paternal grandparents: Antonio Botello and Luz Morales of Mexico, four brothers: Juan Jesus Botello Lara and Ivan Botello Lara of Fredericksburg; Cesar Martin Botello Lara and Alejandro Botello Lara of Salvatierra, Guanajuato of Mexico; three sisters: Claudia Botello Lara, Juana Amparo Botello Lara and Monica Botello Lara, all of Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico.


Robert Duneman

Cremation will take place and a Memorial Celebration of Life Service for Robert Duneman will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 22 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Gregory Brown and Rev. Theodore E Allwardt officiating.

Robert, 75, died Monday, December 27, 2004 at his home in Truth or Consequences, NM.

Robert D. Duneman was born in Cresco. He was a retired John Deere Inspection Foreman.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and enjoyed fishing, camping and his computer.

He leaves behind his wife, Rene C. of the family home in TorC; two sons: David of Buford, GA and Gregory Alan of Northridge, CA; four grandchildren; two brothers: Leonel of Cresco and Bernard of TorC, NM; two sisters: Berniece Baer of Albuquerque, NM and June Wilkins of Cresco.

Edmund Hauer

Funeral services for Edmund Hauer of St. Lucas will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 6 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas with Rev. Joe Hauer and Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

The pall will be placed by his wife and children. Interment will be in St. Luke's Cemetery in St. Lucas. Pallbearers are: Roger Bulgren, Robert Hauer, Jim Hauer, Ron Hauer, Dan Klemmer and Tom Mihm. Edmund, 85, died Sunday, January 2, 2005 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI of natural causes.

Edmund N. Hauer was born December 9, 1919 in St. Lucas, the son of Joseph and Margaret (Drilling) Hauer. He attended St. Luke's Catholic School.

On November 3, 1948, he married Mary L. Sloan at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma. He owned and operated Hauer Welding Shop in St. Lucas for over 40 years.

He served on St. Luke's Church Board for four years and on the town council for close to 40 years. He was on the St. Lucas Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years of which he was chief for 20 years.

He enjoyed his large vegetable garden, playing cards and watching football and basketball.

He is survived by his wife Mary; three daughters: Peg Maher of Cedar Rapids, Joyce Moss of West Union and Donna Hauer of Minneapolis. Two sons: John of Emperial Beach, CA, Paul of Jewell; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Edmund was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters: Generosa Hauer, Clara Bulgren, Agnes Klemmer, and Marge Mihm; and four brothers: William, Conrad, Greg, and Art.


Dervin Faldet

Funeral services for Dervin Faldet were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 28 at Calmar Lutheran Church in Calmar with Pastor Norman Bauer officiating.

Interment was in Calmar Lutheran Cemetery in Calmar. Honorary attendees were: Halverson-Giesen American Legion Post #266, Calmar. Dervin, 82, died Saturday, December 25, 2004 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah following a sudden illness.

Dervin Bernell Faldet was born January 28, 1922 at Canoe, the son of Nels and Grace (Musser) Faldet. He was baptized and confirmed at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church, attended Pleasant Township #7 school and graduated from Decorah High School in 1940. He attended aircraft school in Des Moines and later was employed with Rohr Aircraft in San Diego, CA. Dervin enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in December 1942. He received pilot training for single and twin engine aircraft and was assigned to B24 overseas service in the European Theater of Operations, being stationed at the Rackheath Air Force Base in England. He received an Honorable Discharge in September of 1945. He was later employed by the Postal Service as a mail carrier in Decorah and by the Canoe Creamery and Locker Plant. On February 1, 1946 the Faldet Appliance Store was founded by his brother, Arnold Faldet and Derv entered into partnership with him in October 1947. The partnership continued until March of 1978 when the business was sold to Jim Buchheit. Derv continued on as an employee until March 1992 when illness forced his retirement.

On June 9, 1946, he married Phyllis Knutson at Madison Lutheran Church. They lived in Calmar. He was active in the Calmar Fire Department, Calmar American Legion Post #266, Calmar Senior Club, Calmar Zoning Board and Calmar Lutheran Church. He was Grand Marshall of the Calmar Farmers Day parade in 2003.

He liked to fish, hunt, dance and attend auctions. He took pride in his flowers and garden.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis of Decorah; three daughters: Julie Nordheim of Waukon, Linda Brandt of Ridgeway and Nadine Larson of Nevada; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother: Mel of Decorah.

Dervin was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Arnold; and one sister: Alphea Olson.


Thomas White

Funeral services for Thomas White of McIntire were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 4 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville with Rev. Gary Gilbert officiating.

Interment was in Wayne Cemetery in McIntire.

Thomas, 87, died Saturday, January 1, 2005 at his home in McIntire.

Thomas Edward White was born September 15, 1917 in Weldon, the son of Thomas E. and Emma (Jones) White. He attended local schools.

On November 11, 1957, he married Carolyn Schlampp in Austin, MN. He worked for John Deere and later for Rath Packing in Waterloo until his retirement. Upon his retirement, they moved to McIntire in 1968.

He always had a large vegetable garden.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn of McIntire; two sons: Chuck of Osage and William of McIntire; two grandchildren; two step-grandsons; two step great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Margaret Patterson and Hazel Siefkas of Osceola.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and one brother.


Catherine Joens

Funeral services for Catherine Joens of Riceville will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 7 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with Father Ray E. Atwood officiating.

Interment will be in Westview Cemetery in Laporte City.

Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville on Thursday from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Catherine, 91, died Monday, January 3. 2005 at Mitchell County Regional Health Center Osage Hospital in Osage.

Catherine Joens was born May 6, 1913 near Holland, the daughter of Theodore and Wilhelmina (Klein) Bottema. She graduated from eighth grade in country school, then helped her parents around home and the farm. She "mothered" her younger siblings after their parents died in 1932 and 1933.

She married Walter Joens in LaPorte City in 1939. They farmed near LaPorte City for 20 years, then near Chester for 36 years. Catherine was active in St. Stephan's Church, Kitchen Kut-Ups Band, and T.O.P.S. in Chester. Since 1995, she has resided in Riceville.

She is survived by three sons: David of Minnetonka, MN, Bill of Colorado, and Bob of Riceville; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters: Johanna Leaman of Waterloo, Elizabeth Raymond and Mary Kruckenberg of LaPorte City.

Catherine was preceded in death by her husband Walter in 1979; five brothers: Rinard died in infancy, John, Henry, Bill, and Rinard; and one sister: Angelina Stoner.


Margaret Helgeson

Funeral services for Margaret Helgeson of Harmony, MN were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 3 at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony with Rev. James R. Radatz officiating.

Interment was in Henrytown Lutheran Church Cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Margaret, 74, died Friday, December 31, 2004 at Harmony Health Care Center in Harmony.

Margaret Ann Helgeson was born April 16, 1930 in Fillmore County, MN, the daughter of Elmer and Ada (Johnson) Helgeson. She lived in Harmony. She worked at Heco for many years and later cleaned houses for several people.

She was a member of Greenfield Lutheran Church and its circles. She also belonged to a local card club.

She is survived by two sisters: Lois of Harmony and Eleanor of Preston, MN; and two brothers: Myron of Harmony and Virgil of Silver Bay, MN.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents.


Theodore Lickteig

Funeral services for Theodore "Ted" Lickteig were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 3 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. John A. Moser, chaplain of the Davis Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus presiding.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Honorary pallbearers were: Louis Billmyer and Earl Henry. Pallbearers were: John Grube, Dale Lickteig, Jim Ptacek, James Kuennen, Richard Jirak, and Thomas Ryan. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ted, 95, died Monday, December 27, 2004 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco after a short illness.

Theodore A. Lickteig was born January 26, 1909 in Cresco, Howard County, the son of Peter H. and Barbara (Perry) Lickteig. He was baptized and remained a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Parish in Cresco. He graduated from St. Joseph's School in Cresco after having boarded for eight years with the School Sisters of Notre Dame. He often ran to the Cresco Co-op Creamery to get the milk for the boarders morning breakfasts. After graduation he lived and farmed with his parents on their home acreage for 10 years.

On June 12, 1934, he married Helen Ptacek at St. Joseph's Church in Cresco. They started farming in Howard County. In 1938 he purchased a small farm two miles east of Cresco in Winneshiek County.

Ted served on various committees at St. Joseph's Church in Cresco where he was an usher for many years. In 1928 he became a member of the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus. He joined the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus in 1957, serving a term as Faithful Navigator. Ted served for four years on the Iowa State Extension Council of Winneshiek County. He received recognition for 10 years of service for the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service (ASCS). Other memberships included 50 years with Farm Bureau and a recent recognition of 75 years with State Farm Insurance.

Ted's interests included education, agriculture, reading and travel, taking the family to many of the States of the Union, Canada, Europe, and Mexico. He retired from farming in 1975.

At retirement, Ted stayed on the farm, enjoyed yard work, and flower and vegetable gardening.

He is survived by one daughter: Julie Ann of Green Lake, WI and Dillon, CO; one son: David of Ellensburg, WA; one grandson; two sisters: Angela Grube of Cresco and Bernadine Beane of Las Vegas, NV.

Ted was preceded in death by his wife Helen in 1998; his parents; and two sisters: Louise McAllister and Edvina O'Brien.


Leonard Tupy

Funeral services for Leonard Tupy of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 29 at the Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Honorary pallbearers were: Al Tupy, Jim Rose, Joe Rose, and Steve Rose. Pallbearers were: Dale Tupy, Gary Tupy, Steve Tupy, Mike Tupy, Jim Kapler, and Jerry Timp. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Leonard, 89, died Saturday, December 25, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Leonard Frank Tupy was born February 5, 1915 in Chickasaw County, south of Protivin where his parents farmed. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and attended the rural school near his home. Following his formal education, Leonard stayed at home to help his parents and younger brother on the farm. As a teen, the family moved to a farm south of Ridgeway. In about 1932, the family moved to the farm east of Cresco, where Leonard and Wilma lived until they retired and moved into Cresco in 1987. In August of 2004, Leonard moved to the Howard Residential Care Facility.

On June 16, 1947, he married Wilma Grimm at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco.

He was a member of Notre Dame Parish, a former member of the N.F.O. and a member of the Notre Dame Rosary Society.

He liked to listen and dance to old time music, enjoyed playing "500" horse shoes, and in younger years was a good softball player. He enjoyed traveling around the country side, looking at tractors.

He is survived by one daughter: Sister Mary Ann Tupy O.S.F. of West Point, NE and one son: Bob of Cresco; and five grandchildren.

Leonard was preceded in death by his wife Wilma on September 28, 1996; his parents; and one brother: Dan.


James Carolan

Funeral services for James "Jim" Carolan were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 27 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Gary F. Krapfl, Rev. Peter Bodensteiner, Rev. David J. Pepper, and Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

Jim's grandchildren placed the pall. Interment was in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Lawler. Honorary pallbearers were: Norvin Anderson, Dr. Dennis Glawe, Don Kurtenbach, Keith O'Connell, Don Blazek, Merlyn Gossman, Tom McGowan, Obert Sacquitne, Norman Speltz, Ron Donn, Joe Halbur, Jack McKone, Gordon Speltz, Carl Wurzer, and members of the Association of Realtors. Pallbearers were: Randy Boedecker, Steve Merritt, Mike Kurtenbach, Jason Woodring, Jim Langreck, and Duane Wurzer. Fjelstul Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

James, 73, died Friday, December 24, 2004 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, WI of a heart ailment.

James Leo Carolan was born February 19, 1931 in New Hampton, the son of Frank and Alice (Whalen) Carolan. He graduated from Loras Academy in Dubuque.

On November 21, 1951, he married Shirley Roths in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia.

Following high school, Jim served in the U.S. Air Force. The couple then moved back to the local area and he operated the C and R Feed and Livestock Service in Lawler. He also worked as a cross-country truck driver and he farmed for many years in the Lawler area. He retired in 2000 and the couple moved to Decorah, where Jim worked as a realtor.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler and St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, the American Legion Post in Lawler, where he was a past commander and chaplain, and he was a member of the Decorah V.F.W. Post.

He is survived by his wife Shirley of Decorah; six children: Mary Marsters of Pueblo, CO, Jim Jr. of Panama City Beach, FL, Angie Larsen of Grand Rapids, MN, Pat of Waucoma, Chris Stoltzfus of Glenwood Springs, CO, Julie Girardini of Sykesville, MD; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters: Ann Marie Ellingson and Bernadette Nosbisch, both of Cresco; and two brothers: Francis of Charles City and Paul of Bullhead City, AZ.

James was preceded in death by his parents; and six brothers: Eugene, Robert, Charles, and three infant brothers.


Rosella Shekleton

Funeral services for Rosella Shekleton of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 30 at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center in New Hampton with Msgr. Carl Schmitt officiating.

The pall was placed by her four granddaughters. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton. Pallbearers were her grandsons: Linn Shekleton, Dan Shekleton, Richard Shekleton, Eddie Shekleton, Robert Shekleton, Michael Shekleton, Jason Shekleton, Joe Shekleton, Tom Shekleton, and Christopher Shekleton. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Rosella, 84, died Monday, December 27, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Rosella M. Shekleton was born July 29, 1920 on the family farm west of Alta Vista in rural Chickasaw County, the daughter of John and Josephine (Rouchka) Kobliska. She attended rural country school.

On February 20, 1946, she married Walter Shekleton at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church in rural Elma. They farmed southeast of New Hampton from 1948 until 1979 before moving to their current home south of New Hampton.

She was a member of Holy Family Parish and Rosary Society.

She loved embroidering, flowers, and cooking.

She is survived by her husband Walter; three sons: Ed, Jim, and Bill, all of New Hampton; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother: William of Alta Vista.

Rosella was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother: Edward.


Gladys Borsheim

Funeral services for Gladys Borsheim of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 29 at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Steven Jacobsen officiating.

Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Pallbearers were: Alan Engelhardt, Ken Slaymaker, Keith Slaymaker, Charles Borsheim, Robert Borsheim, and James Engelhardt. Gladys, 95, died Monday, December 27, 2004 at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah following a short illness.

Gladys Lucille Borsheim was born November 15, 1909 on the family farm near Decorah, the daughter of Henry and Johannah (Gjetley) Spilde. She was baptized on December 19, 1909 and confirmed on March 23, 1924 both at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church. She attended the Dobney country school in Pleasant Township and helped on her family farm.

Gladys was a 4-H member in her younger years.

On January 11, 1928 she married Elmer Borsheim in Decorah.

She served as a 4-H leader for the Freeport Good Luck girls.

She enjoyed traveling, going on bus trips, playing bingo, sewing, crocheting, knitting, and bowling.

She also enjoyed volunteering at the First Lutheran Church, serving as a deaconess, helping on "do days", the Nordic Fest, ladies circle and making quilts. Gladys was also recognized by Governor Terry Branstad by being an Outstanding Volunteer. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Oneota Rebekah Lodge #175.

She is survived by three daughters: Mavis Frey of Ridgeway, Elaine Slaymaker of Marion, and Janice Engelhardt of Granger, MN; three sons: Merton of Hiawatha, Ronald of Decorah and Elton of Decorah; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; one sister: Bessie Huseby of Willmar, MN; and two brothers: Orval of North Liberty and Gavin of Decorah.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Elmer on January 13, 1978; one son: Verl; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; her parents; one sister: Helen McConaughay; and four brothers: Harold, Leonard, Myron; and Lester.


Darrell Benda

Darrell, 51, died Thursday, December 30, 2004 at his home from a heart attack.

Joseph Drtina

Funeral services for Joseph Drtina were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 23 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were: Brian and Brad Pecinovsky, Kari and Shane Geiselhart, Chad Kloberdanz and Dave Daley. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Joseph, 88, died Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.

Joseph John Drtina was born November 20, 1916 in Howard County, the son of Joseph and Frances (Zobeck) Drtina. He attended the rural school near his home and finished his education in Cresco, graduating from Cresco High School. Following his schooling, he stayed home to help with the family farm.

On June 5, 1944, he married Angeline Vlk at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They started farming, renting until 1951 when they purchased a farm.

He liked to fish in his younger years, but most of his time was spent farming and doing carpenter work. He liked to play the drums, do word search puzzles, and tell jokes. He was a former member of the Farm Bureau and the Angus Association.

He is survived by his wife Angie; two daughters: Karen Pecinovsky and Deb Kloberdanz, all of Cresco; three grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; one sister: Violet Ladwig of Cresco; and two brothers: George of Cresco and Lester of Lime Springs.

Joseph was preceded in death by one grandson; his parents; three sisters: Anita Svoboda, Esther Jones, and Annie Estella Drtina as an infant; and one brother: Edward.


Darrell Benda

Visitation services for Darrell Benda of Des Moines, formerly of Cresco, were held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 6 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar.

There was a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. by Rev. Donald Hawes.

Darrell, 51, died Thursday, December 30, 2004 at his home from a heart attack.

Darrell James Benda was born November 23, 1953 in Cresco, the son of James John and Agnes Mary (Franzen) Benda. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco. He attended Cresco High School and worked in the Cresco and Des Moines areas. He then drove an over-the-road truck out of Utah for a few years, returning to Des Moines one year ago.

Darrell enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, going for walks and drives and helping others in need.

He is survived by one brother: Duane of Portland, OR; three sisters: Diane Flugge of Cresco, Donna Widell of Lime Springs, and Debra Hertges of Calmar.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents; one half brother: David; and grandparents: Wenzel and Albina Benda and Edward and Rose Franzen.


Marjorie Howard

Services for Marjorie Howard of Columbia, MO, formally of Cresco will be held in Cresco at a later date.

Nilson Funeral Home of Columbia and Conway Funeral Home of Cresco are handling the arrangements.

Marjorie, 89, died Friday, December 24, 2004 at Lenoir Retirement Center in Columbia after a brief illness.

Marjorie Howard was born August 21, 1915 in Cresco the daughter of Wallace A. and Anna (Paul) Fisk. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1932 and taught country school for two years.

In June of 1940, she married Kenneth Howard at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

She was an avid quilter in Columbia and spent many enjoyable Fridays at the Columbia Senior Center, where she quilted with the "girls." She also enjoyed other crafts, and playing the piano.

She and Kenneth were the DX oil distributors in the Cresco area for many years until their retirement.

She is survived by two sons: Gordon of Columbia and Steven of Key Largo, Fl; three grandchildren; and one sister: Inez Trouten of Platteville, WI (formally of Harmony, MN).

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband; and her parents.


Robert Pass

Robert E. Pass, Sr., 73, formally of Chattanooga, TN died at his home in Cresco, IA on Tuesday, December 28, 2004.

A full military burial was held on December 30, at the National Cemetery in Rock Island, IL.

Bob was the son of Hugh and Opia (Clonts) also of Chattanooga. He attended Alton Park Elementary School, Lookout Jr. High and City High where he lettered in several sports before moving in his junior year to Waterloo, IA.

In 1950, he marred Marilyn L. Ertel at Charles City, IA. Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a Sergeant and Train Master running ammunition to the front lines during his two years in Korea during the Korean War, 1952-1954. After returning from the war, Bob continued his career on the railroad, from which he retired.

He enjoyed fishing, pheasant and duck hunting, listening to music and reading.

He will be missed and loved forever by his surviving six children: Cindy Davidson of Cresco, IA, Brad Pass of Hokah, MN, Robert E. Pass Jr. of Canton, MN, Carolyn Rich) Baker of Hokah, MN, Cathy (John) Opperman of Hazleton, IA, and Charlene (Mike) Brumfield of San Antonio, TX; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters: Sara Modlin, June Pate, and Jane (Bob) Campbell.

Bob was preceded in death by one infant son; one infant daughter; one infant granddaughter; and his parents.

There will be a memorial service held for friends and family on Sunday, January 30, 2005 at Champlin Hall at the Cresco Opera House in Cresco, IA between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. A lunch will be served after the service. Delbert Ihns

Funeral services for Delbert Ihns, Sr. of Lime Springs were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 9 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lime Springs with Rev. Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating.

Interment will take place in the spring at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Delbert, 75, died suddenly Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN from intra cerebral hemorrhage.

Delbert Burton Ihns, Sr. was born April 3, 1929 in Howard County, near Lime Springs, the son of Arnold Francis and Minnie Louise (Michaelson) Ihns. He was baptized at St. Matthew's Church in Davis Corners and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lime Springs and remained a member throughout his life. During his youth, he attended rural Howard County schools. He began farming after attending school with his family on a farm east of Lime Springs.

In 1953 and 1954, he served in the Army during the Korean War conflict. After his discharge, he returned to farming with his family. Although farming was his passion, he did do other types of work during this time also, such as electrician, and custom farming throughout the community. He was a long-time member of the Lime Springs American Legion.

He was married on November 27, 1958 and to this union six children were born. He owned and operated a farm east of Lime Springs from 1961 until his death. During the last 15 years, Delbert Jr. joined his dad in the farming operation.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, playing cards and tinkering with anything mechanical.

He is survived by his children: Delbert Jr., Deborah, Della Kolpin, Johnna Sutton, and Theodore; 11 grandchildren; and one sister: Hazel Bronner.

Delbert was preceded in death by an infant son; his parents; one brother: Arnold, Jr.; two sisters: Louise McCunniff and Gladys Terbeest; two half-brothers: Francis and LaVern Ihns; and one half-sister: Juanita Ihns.


Kathryn Nath

Funeral services for Kathryn Nath formerly of Riceville were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 11 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville with Rev. Michael Parris officiating.

Kathryn, 91, died Thursday, January 6, 2005 at Wildwood Grove in LeRoy, MN.

Kathryn Margaret Nath was born March 10, 1913 in Monroe Township near Dysart, the daughter of George Henry and Christina (Mussman) Kempf. She attended country school until attending high school in Riceville. She graduated in 1930 from Riceville High School.

In 1932, she married Walter Nath at the Little Brown Church. Their first home was in Cresco. In 1940 the family moved to her parents farm. When they retired from farming in 1977, they moved to Riceville. During their later years on the farm and their early years in town, Kathryn was active in her husbands Funks seed corn dealership. She kept the books and helped to organize deliveries and special events.

She was a homemaker and a Gold Star Mother. She was an active member of the Riceville Flowerette Club.

She enjoyed tending to her vegetable and flower gardens. She also enjoyed dancing and playing cards, and taking yearly trips to California.

She is survived by her sons: Richard of Riceville and David of Anaheim, CA; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband Walter in 1989; one son: Ray; and her parents.


Bernard Vote

Funeral services for Bernard "Slim" Vote of Riceville were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 8 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville with Rev. Michael Carey and Rev. Herschel Hawf officiating.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Bernard, 75, died Monday, January 3, 2005 at the Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

Bernard Gene Vote was born July 21, 1929 in Pocahontas, the son of Clarence Guy and Evelyn Edith (Erickson) Vote. As a young man Bernard went west to California and lived in the Oakland area.

On May 28, 1966, he married Mary Ann Betts at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua. They enjoyed dancing and attending social gatherings in their earlier years.

Many will remember Bernard as a "Railroad Man". He began his rail career with Chicago Great Western Railroad and retired from the Chicago Northwestern Transportation Company in 1985.

He is survived by his wife Mary Ann; one sister: Anna Marie Padget of Waterloo; and one brother: Roger of Riceville.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers: Clarence Jr., Bruce, and Merlyn.


 
Arthur Wilhelm

Arthur, 81, died Sunday, January 9, 2005 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Arthur G. Wilhelm was born December 2, 1923 in Waucoma, the son of Joe and Catherine Wilhelm. He farmed most of his life except for two years of driving semi for Hubbard Milling in Cedar Rapids.

He is survived by his wife Sadie of Harmony; his children: Diane Anderson of Ostrander, Rich of Garner, Denise Schultz of Lanesboro, Michael of Preston, and Angela Colbenson of Rushford; 13 grandchildren; and one great grandson.

Arthur was preceded in death by one son: David.


C.J. Anderson

Funeral services for Carlton "Jim" "C.J." Anderson were held on Tuesday, January 11 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Granger, MN with Rev. Keith C. Parker officiating.

Interment was in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were: Frank "Pinky" Waid and David Larson. Pallbearers were: Don Wilken, Dale Keune, Gerald Keune, Mark Bronner, Steve Linderbaum, and Manley Bigalk. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

C.J. died Friday, January 7, 2005 at the West Ridge Care Center in Cedar Rapids where he has made his home for the past four and one half years.

Carlton James Anderson was born December 29, 1924 in Buena Vista County, near Marathon, the son of Swan M. and Edith M. (Carlson) Anderson. He attended school in Marathon and graduated from high school in 1942. On April 23, 1943, he enlisted in the Army, serving with intelligence in the European Theatre from October of 1944 until September of 1945, being discharged in December of 1945. Following his discharge, he entered college and following his degree, he graduated from the University of Iowa, receiving his J.D. Degree from its College of Law.

On June 1, 1948, he married Lona M. Brown in Council Bluffs.

Following his passing of the Bar, he practiced for a few years in West Union with a fellow attorney. In the mid 50's, he moved with his family to Cresco and entered into the practice of law.

Later he married Kathryn D. (Zehr) Kunert on October 30, 1981 in Clear Lake.

C.J. served as Attorney for Howard County, City of Cresco, and Hawkeye Tri-County Electric for many years. He was Chairman of the Howard County Board of Health, a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Cresco Chamber of Commerce, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and the Cresco Country Club.

He belonged to the First Lutheran Church until he moved to a farm south of Granger, it was then he joined St. Matthew's Church.

Jim's favorite pastimes was playing golf, and Canadian fishing trips.

He is survived by his children: Karen Anderson Noecker of Merced, CA, James Jay of Mauston, WI, Janet Platt of Birmingham, MI, Troy of Nevada, and Kristin Anderson of Montgomery, AL; and five grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his two wives; his parents; and two brothers: Thomas and Eugene.


Iverna Queel

Funeral services for Iverna "Garry" Queel of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 4 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. H.G. Engebretson officiating.

Iverna, 84, died Thursday, December 30, 2004 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah following a short illness.

Iverna Gladys Queel was born August 27, 1920 in Decorah the daughter of Gerald and Ida (Larson) Moen. She attended and graduated from Decorah High School in 1939. Iverna moved to Chicago, IL where she worked as a nurse's aide in a hospital and in a physician's office. She then went to work for the Dial Corporation in the payroll department, working there for 39 years.

On March 17, 1990, she married Craig Queel in Carpentersville, IL. She returned to Iowa and lived in Decorah for the past 14 years.

She enjoyed Swedish weaving, rug hooking and ceramics. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Rug Hookers.

She is survived by her husband Craig of Decorah; one step daughter: Cindy Jirak of Lawler; three step grandchildren; one sister: Mary Lou Lensch of Decorah; and her step mother: Nora Moen of Decorah.

Iverna was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters: Hulda Peterson and Gretchen Olson.


Charles Gardner

Funeral services for Charles "Chuck" Gardner of Ridgeway were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 10 at Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway with Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

Following services, it was Chuck's wishes to donate his body for scientific purpose. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Charles, 78, died Thursday, January 6, 2005 at his home in Ridgeway.

Charles Arnold Gardner was born September 26, 1926 on the family farm in Orleans Township, the son of Rupert and Agnes Jessie Gardner. He was baptized at Orleans Lutheran Church on October 10, 1926 and confirmed on June 2, 1940 at First Lutheran Church, for the Orleans Church. He graduated from Cresco High School in May 1944, and soon after enlisted in the Army Air Corp. He was honorably discharged in October 1945. He then spent time in Kenosha, WI working in the Rambler Plant, then in Waterloo working for John Deere. He then returned to Cresco to work for Hovden Implement, the local Allis Chalmers dealership.

On December 17, 1950, he married Joann Hovden and they began a farming career covering six decades. They farmed the Gardner family farm for several years before moving to the Hovden family farm, which has been their home ever since. Chuck also spent over 25 years driving school bus for the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District.

He has been an active member of the Orleans Lutheran Church where he served as a council member, council treasurer, and calling committees.

He is survived by his wife Joann; three daughters: Lorene Reddell of Madison, WI, Barbara Eide of Ossian, and Dawn Gardner of Tucson, AZ; one son: Eric of Marion; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister: Dorothy Vagts.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Zachary and Robert; and one infant sister: Grace.

Marion Hove

Funeral services for Marion Hove of Cresco were held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, January 17 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

The pall was placed by his family. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery at Cresco. Pallbearers were: John Hove, Jim Sobolik, John Wilson, Don Kapler, Alvin Koshatka, and Richard Ollendieck. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Marion, 86, died Wednesday, January 12, 2005 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, where he has lived since April 21, 2003.

Marion Hanley Hove was born on October 4, 1918 at the Linde home just east of Ridgeway, the son of Lawrence and Alletta (Linde) Hove. Marion attended school through the seventh grade at Ridgeway Public School. He then stayed at home and helped with the farming until he was 20 years of age. At that time, his family moved to a farm west of Cresco.

On July 7, 1941, he was inducted into the Army, attended parachute school and served with the 101st paratroopers. He served in the battles of Normandy and Rhineland, receiving the American Defense Ribbon, Purple Heart, European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, a Distinguished Unit Badge with one Bronze Cluster. Marion was discharged on October 14, 1945. Following his return home, he operated a milk route until he bought the farm, where Tommie and Maggie live, in 1954.

On April 14, 1947, he married Lillian Frey at St. Wenceslaus Church in Spillville. They later purchased the present Hove farm on Valley Ave.

Marion enjoyed working, was a member of the V.F.W. Post #4561 of Cresco, the Knights of Columbus, the Wildlife Club, was a former trustee for Vernon Springs Township, served on the Cresco Zoning Board for a short time, was an usher at St. Joseph's Church, and played Santa Claus for the V.F.W. for 50 years. He also enjoyed selling feed and traveling.

He is survived by his children: Tommie, Larrie, and Terrie; and two grandchildren.

Marion was preceded in death by his wife Lillian on March 27, 1999, his parents; two brothers: Roger and Lowell; and one sister: Irene Sobolik.


Vincent Schwickerath

Elmer Hirsch

Elmer, 95, died Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at Rice Lake Convalescent Center (where he had resided since 1997) of complications of advanced age.

Elmer H. Hirsch was born April 4, 1909 near Waverly in Butler County, the son of Christian and Anna Marie Louise Hirsch. Elmer was baptized and confirmed in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Waverly.

On April 12, 1930, he married Helen Carney, they were later divorced. They had two children, Dixie Hirsch Posey and Vernon Hirsch. He was married in Kansas City, MO on June 15, 1946 to Leona Witt Albee who preceded him in death on September 4, 1995. They had two children Jerold and John Hirsch.

During his youth, Elmer attended rural school and helped with the family farm. In 1952, he and his wife bought a farm near Lime Springs where they lived and worked with their family until 1970. They also owned three tavern businesses through the years in Reinbeck, Lime Springs, and Granger, MN. After retiring Elmer enjoyed bartending at Skiddies in Cumberland until he was past 80 years old.

He enjoyed dancing, bowling, fishing, traveling, and playing bingo.

He is survived by one daughter: Dixie Posey of Waterloo; one son: John of Cumberland; one step- daughter: Joyce Albee Koster of Lime Springs; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Elmer was preceded in death by his wife Leona; two sons: Vernon and Jerold; two grandsons; three brothers: Christian, Martin, and Otto; four sisters: infant Martha, Rose Brinkman, Clara Moller, and Irene Judas.


Alger Amble

Funeral services for Alger "Shorty" Amble of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 12 at Immanuel Lutheran Church (Crane Creek), rural Lawler with Rev. Vincent C. Fricke officiating.

Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery at Reilly Ridge. Pallbearers were his grandchildren: Jay Ramsey, Sarah Huscko. Dan Amble, Ryan Amble, Abigail, Lydia and Eleanor Lofte, Emily Sorenson, Brittany and Lucas Trewin, and Garrett Johnson. Alger, 77, died Sunday, January 9, 2005 at the New Hampton Care Center of natural causes.

Alger Norman Amble was born March 22, 1927 on a farm east of Jerico, the son of John and Clara (Knutson) Amble. He was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Saude. He began his education at the West Saude School and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1945. After his schooling he farmed with his father.

On October 14, 1950, he married Norma Hurd at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Reilly Ridge. They farmed north of Jerico. Alger began working at Supersweet Feeds in New Hampton in 1959. He retired from farming in the early 80's, but continued at Supersweet until his retirement in 1989. Following his retirement he began working as a night manager with his wife at the Super 8 in New Hampton. The couple moved to New Hampton in 2000.

In his younger years, he enjoyed playing baseball with the Jacksonville, New Hampton, Cresco, and Lourdes teams. He also played guitar in the Jerico Hotshots Band and he enjoyed coaching 4-H softball.

He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife Norma of New Hampton; six children: Vicki Ramsey of Center Point, Jack of Clear Lake, Mary Eileen Lofte of Ossian, Pat Sorenson of Decorah, Amanda Trewin of New Hampton, Jennifer Johnson of Rochester, MN; and 11 grandchildren.

Alger was preceded in death by one son: Alvin; one granddaughter; one grandson; his parents; and one sister: Eileen Amble.

Irene, 101, died Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at the New Hampton Care Center.

Irene M. Schluetter was born October 14, 1903 in North Washington, the daughter of Edward and Lena (Streit) Hilsman. She received her education at St. Mary's Catholic School in North Washington.

On September 21, 1926, she married Henry William Schluetter at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington. They farmed near North Washington until 1962 at which time they retired and moved into New Hampton. Henry died on September 15, 1970. She continued to live in her home until becoming a resident of the New Hampton Care Center in March of 2002.

She was a member of Holy Family Parish and Rosary Society, and the Catholic Daughter of the Americas.

She loved playing cards, word search puzzle books and gardening.

She is survived by two daughters: LaVonne Testroet of Lockport, IL and Wilma Orthaus of Rochester, MN; 20 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband Henry; two sons: Roger and Dale; her parents; and four brothers: Harold in infancy, Roger, Herbert, and Cecil.


Thomas Paul

A private interment was held on Thursday, January 13 at the New Hampton City Cemetery for Thomas William Paul of New Hampton.

Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Thomas, 54, died Monday, January 10, 2005 at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City.


Eleanor Webb

Funeral services for Eleanor "Sis" Webb of Alta Vista were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 22 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista with Monsignor John Hemann officiating.

Her children placed the pall. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Eleanor, 87, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN of natural causes.

Eleanor Elizabeth Webb was born March 16, 1917 at Winner, SD, the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Holthaus) Heying. At an early age she moved with her family to Alta Vista. She received her education at a country school and St. Williams Catholic School in Alta Vista. Following her schooling, she helped her grandmother in Ossian.

On January 16, 1940, she married Raymond Webb at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista. They resided in the Alta Vista area. Eleanor worked for the Schroeder Locker in Alta Vista and was a custodian and later a cook for the Alta Vista Public School. She retired after the closing of the school in 1986.

Eleanor enjoyed quilting with a group of ladies in Alta Vista, crocheting rugs, playing checkers and solitaire, collecting chickens, being outdoors and going fishing in her younger years. She was an excellent cook.

She was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church and the Rosary Society in Alta Vista.

She is survived by six children: Jerry of Waterloo, LeRoy of Cresco, Dale of Alta Vista, Janice Ohm of New Hampton, Nancy Eddy of Fennimore, WI, and Roger of New Hampton; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one brother: Mike of Alta Vista; and three sisters: Agnes Cerwinske of Alta Vista, Alice Freidhoff of Waterloo, and Gertrude Freidhof of Elma.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband Raymond on May 4, 1983; two daughters: Elsie Stevenson and Darlene Webb; her parents; one sister: Genevieve in infancy; and four brothers: Linus, Louis, Norb, and Dick.


Robert Pass

Robert Eugene Pass (Bob), 73, formally of Waterloo, IA died at his home in Cresco, IA on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and the love of his life, wife and companion, Marilyn.

Bob was born in Chattanooga, TN to Hugh and Opia (Clonts) also of Chattanooga. He attended elementary schools in Chattanooga before moving to Waterloo, IA where he attended West High School.

In 1951 he married Marilyn Ertel in Charles City, IA and together they had six children. Bob was a United States Army Veteran having served in the Korean War from 1952-1954. He was stationed in Korea as Sergeant and Trainmaster for 18 months. He then continued his railroad career after returning to the states working for the Illinois Central Railroad and the Burlington Northern Railroad, from where he retired.

Bob was an avid fisherman and had a passion for pheasant and duck hunting. He also enjoyed his favorite television shows, smoking on the deck, calling friends, and especially enjoyed and treasured visits from family and friends.

He was a proud member of the VFW, Nat'l. Rifle Assn., Ducks Unlimited, American Legion, Sheet Metal Wkr. Union, and United Transportation Union.

On December 30, 2004 Bob received a full military burial at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois. His lifelong wife and companion, Marilyn, as well as his children, grandchildren and dear friends accompanied him. He received a twenty-one-gun salute from the veterans of the Korean War, of which he would have been proud. Marilyn was presented with a properly folded United States military flag and three shells from the twenty-one-gun salute. Each of Bob's children and grandchildren present received a shell, as well, in remembrance of him. Pallbearers included Bob's son Brad, sons-in-law John Opperman and Rich Baker and grandson Cody Opperman.

He will be sadly missed by Marilyn and their children: Cindy Davidson of Cresco, Brad Pass of Hokah, MN, Bob Pass of Canton, MN, Carolyn (Rich) of Hokah, MN, Cathy Opperman (John) of Hazleton, IA, Charlene (Mike) Brumfield of Cresco; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his faithful and beloved dog "Jay".

One infant son, one infant daughter, one infant granddaughter and his parents precede Bob in death.

John Cahoy

Funeral services for John Cahoy of Fredericksburg were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 22 at St. Fredericks Catholic Church in Fredericksburg with Rev. John Harpel officiating.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Fredericksburg. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

John, 88, died Sunday, January 16, 2005 at the Ruth Hospice in Milwaukee, WI.

John P. Cahoy was born August 15, 1916 in Fairfax, SD, the son of Stephen and Anna (Opst) Cahoy. He was raised and educated in Fairfax.

On June 1, 1938, he married Anne Watzel at Immaculate Conception Church in Winner, SD. They moved to a farm northeast of Fredericksburg in 1939 and in 1944 he began working for Milne & Chase Windmill and Pump Service. John became a partner in the new Mueller & Cahoy firm in 1953 and added plumbing and heating to the business. In 1954 he and his family moved into their new home in Fredericksburg.

John served on various state committees, was a Director for the Iowa Water Well Association and represented Iowa at the National Convention in Washington, DC.

He was on the original board of directors of St. Frederick's Church in 1973. He retired in 1979.

In 1986 John served as the Grand Marshall in the Fredericksburg Dairy Day Parade.

He enjoyed fishing, sports and traveling throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean. At the age of 83, he made his third trip to Europe. They spent their winters in Dade City, FL for over 25 years. For the past several years, John had been residing with his daughter and her family in Wisconsin.

He is survived by one son: Duane of Sheridan, WY; one daughter: Shirley Anderson of New Berlin, WI; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his wife Anne in 2002; his parents; two sisters: Margaret Pistulka and Anna Krizan; and three brothers: William, Steve, and Joseph.


Vincent Schwickerath

Funeral services for Vincent Schwickerath of North Washington were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 20 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington with Msgr. John Hemann officiating.

The pall was placed by his five children. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in North Washington. Pallbearers were: Rob Libolt, Kurt Haeflinger, Eric Jungbluth, Lucas Schwickerath, Steven Schwickerath, and Travis Schwickerath. Honorary pallbearers were: Jessica Libolt, Gina Haeflinger, Jenna Haeflinger, Jennifer Schwickerath, Brenda Schwickerath, Krystal Souhrada, Jacob Souhrada, Dominik Haeflinger, Alexandrya Haeflinger, and Kaytlynn Haeflinger. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Vincent, 79, died Sunday, January 16, 2005 at his home.

Vincent R. Schwickerath was born July 25, 1925 on the family farm near North Washington, the son of Lambert and Barbara (Pierre) Schwickerath. He received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School in North Washington.

On August 22, 1950, he married Marie Weigel at the former St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jerico. They farmed their entire lives in the North Washington area. Marie died on November 9, 1991. Vincent continued farming and also did some custom farm work.

He was a past board member of the Chickasaw County Ag. Extension Council and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington.

He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and hunting.

He is survived by three sons: Wayne of Ames, Gary of New Hampton, and Duane of Alta Vista; two daughters: Jane Haeflinger of Rochester, MN and Joanne Souhrada of Ostrander, MN; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother: Reynold of New Hampton; and one sister: Mary Ries of Elma.

Vincent was preceded in death by his wife Marie; his parents; three brothers: Ed, Louis, and Walter; and two sisters: Martha Sinnwell and Josephine Schwickerath.


Mildred Reutlinger

Funeral services for Mildred Reutlinger were held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 22 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco with Pastor Lewis Flanigan officiating.

Interment will be in the spring in New Oregon Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Doug and Del Teach, Barry, Scott and David Reutlinger, and Alex Dunt. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mildred, 96, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at the Cresco Care Center.

Mildred Elizabeth Reutlinger was born February 1, 1908 in Howard County, on a farm one and one half miles north of Saratoga, the daughter of Louis and Elizabeth (Ruzicka) Buresh. She spent her early years in the Saratoga area, and moved with her parents at the age of 12 to Cresco. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1926. She was baptized at the Saratoga Presbyterian Church and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Cresco.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, and the afternoon Circle of the Church. She served on many of the church boards and UMW over the years until she retired to live in the Alert Manor for 12 years.

On July 12, 2000 Mildred was unable to care for herself and was admitted to the Howard Residential Care Facility and in August of 2000, she transferred to the Cresco Care Center where she remained.

During the Second World War, Mildred and Harold (Tiny as he was known) went to San Jose, CA and worked for the efforts of the war, coming back to Cresco in 1946. They lived on the west part of town and owned and ran Tiny's Garage until 1975 when they retired to live on an acreage in Lime Springs. They lived there for 12 years and after Harold passed away in 1987, she returned to Cresco and lived at Alert Manor.

She enjoyed her neighbors and doing exercises with her lady friends and a cup of coffee and a cookie.

She is survived by one brother: Melbern of Cresco.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Harold; her parents; and one sister: Clara Buresh Dunt Shirk.


Ivy Ollendick

Funeral services for Ivy Ollendick were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 21 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Michael Tauke officiating.

The family placed the pall. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were her 10 grandsons. In honorary attendance was the St. Gerard's Study Club. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ivy, 83, died Monday, January 17, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Ivy Mae Ollendick was born March 5, 1921 in Brunswick, NE, the daughter of Hubert and Alice (Bryan) Buettgenbach. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1939.

On November 28, 1939, she married Alfred Ollendick at St. Boniface Church in Elgin, NE. In 1946 they purchased their farm in Howard Center Township in Howard County and moved to Iowa in 1947. They lived on the same farm until they moved into Cresco in 1997.

Ivy was a member of St. Joseph's Church, its Rosary Society, St. Gerard's Study Club and the Bible Study group. She was an avid quilter and loved cooking. In her earlier years, Ivy enjoyed dancing, watching Lawrence Welk on TV and listening to Glen Miller on the radio.

She is survived by seven children: Ronald of Lime Springs, Richard of Wheaton, IL, Gary of Muncelein, IL, Thomas of Blacksburg, VA, Kenneth of Lime Springs, Diane Wright of Wayzeta, MN, and Duane of Rochester, MN; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one brother: Glen; and one sister: Rose Dodd, both of Bremerton, WA.

Ivy was preceded in death by her husband Alfred in 1997; one great-grandson; her parents; eight brothers: Howard, Robert, Walt, Jack, Ed, Bill, Albert, and Russell; and one sister: Emma.


Arnold Meier

Funeral services for Arnold Meier of Elma will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, January 26 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating.

The family will place the pall. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers are: Joe, Chris, Tom and Stephen Schmitt, Phil McCarville, and Jack Whitinger. Conway Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Arnold, 86, died Saturday, January 22, 2005 at his home.

Arnold James Meier was born February 2, 1918 in Howard County, the son of Frank J. and Veronica E. (Kanies) Meier. He attended school in Alta Vista, living at his grandmother's home, through the seventh grade and finished his education at a rural school near his parent's home. Following his formal schooling, he worked as a farmer and carpenter for many farmers in the area. Eventually, he purchased his present farm and farmed on his own.

On June 18, 1940, he married Clementine Maravetz in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes. They were members of Immaculate Conception Church in Elma eventually transferring their membership to Immaculate Conception Church in Riceville.

In earlier years, he liked to hunt and fish. In later years, after Arnold and Clementine quit dairy cows, they liked to travel. Originally they drove their car, but later traveled by bus through most of the United States and Canada.

He is survived by his wife Clementine; three children: Eugene of Decorah, Dorothy Schmitt of Riceville, and Allan of Mason City; four grandsons; three brothers: Walter of Riceville, Harold of Elma, and Francis of Elma; and two sisters: Angeline Helmerick of Colorado and Agnes Hidding of Elma.

Arnold was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jerome, as a child; and one sister: Rosalia Ptacek.
