Merlin Heimerdinger, 82
U.S. Army  Korean Conflict

Published:
Wednesday, October 17, 2012

NEW HAMPTON - Funeral services for Merlin L. Heimerdinger of New Hampton were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Pastor Vincent Fricke of Immanuel Lutheran Parish officiating. Military honors took place in front of the church immediately after the service, followed by interment at Saude Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends greeted the family from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15 at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton. A short prayer service and reminiscing were held at 8 p.m. Visitation continued an hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Merlin, 82, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012 after a valiant 12-year battle with renal cancer.

Merlin Louis Heimerdinger was born July 27, 1930, northeast of Jerico, Iowa, on the Heimerdinger family farm, in the same house in which he resided for the majority of his life. He was the only child of Louis and Alice (Haugen) Heimerdinger, and attended school at the Paris Township country school in Howard County. Farming was Merlin's lifetime career and one he genuinely loved. He took great pride in the fact that his century farm had been in the family since 1877.

Merlin served in the US Army, fighting in the Korean War from July 1952 to July of 1953. He was an infantry rifleman with the 2nd Division, 23rd Infantry Regiment, Fox Company, and was involved in battles on Old Badly, Arrowhead Ridge, T-Bone Hill, Three Sisters, and the Chowan Valley, among others. While in Korea, he was a Platoon Leader; he was selected from his company to be a security honor guard for President Elect General Dwight Eisenhower on his tour of Korea. Over the last 20 years, Merlin attended many 2nd Infantry Division Korean War reunions and has kept in contact with his loyal, beloved army buddies all over the USA and considered them his closest of friends.

On Feb. 23, 1954, he married Doris Bronner from Lime Springs, Iowa.

One of the biggest highlights of Merlin's life was his annual fly-in fishing trip on Trout Lake, Canada, a trip he made for 21 consecutive years, his last being in 2011. He valued this time spent with long time friends, meeting new acquaintances along the way. His enjoyment of this trip was further heightened when one of his sons and a few other close family relatives joined the group. Merlin was an expert at tying his own fishing jigs.

One of the best memories in Merlin's 82 years occurred this past spring, soon after Merlin and Doris moved off the farm and into New Hampton. A party was held in their honor at the newly refurbished Heimerdinger family barn. The restoration of this 1895 barn was a labor of love, performed by family and friends, and a process Merlin enjoyed watching and supervising.

Merlin was an active member of Immanuel (Crane Creek) Lutheran Church, rural Jerico, and the Paul Johann Alta Vista VFW Post #4069, marching in parades and participating in the military honor guard for veterans who had passed. He enjoyed reading, visiting friends and family, and reflecting on the news and politics with his coffee crew at Jerico Jo's. The Gundersen Foundation in LaCrosse, Wis., recently recognized him for being a 31-year donor.

Merlin is survived by his wife, Doris; six children: Deborah (Stephen) Loes of Chardon, Ohio, Gary (Susan) Heimerdinger of Cresco, David (Debra) Heimerdinger of New Hampton, Karen McGrath of New Hampton, Cheryl Edwards of West Branch, and Dale Heimerdinger of Lawler; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a special long time friend, fishing buddy, and the father of three of Merlin's grandsons, Steve McGrath.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Alice Lee and Louis Heimerdinger; and his stepfather: Oliver Lee.

PHOENIX, AZ - Sandra "Sandy" K. Gryting, 71, died in Phoenix, Ariz. with her family by her side in the early morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, after a massive stroke. Memorial celebrations will be held at three locations as follows: Thursday, Nov. 1, 3-5 p.m. at her residence in Surprise, Ariz.; Wednesday, Nov. 7, 3-5:30 p.m. at her home in Kirksville, Mo.; and Sunday, Nov. 11, 1-4 p.m. at the Odeon Hall in Belview, Minn. Interment will be held at Belview Cemetery.

Sandra Kay Gryting was born Sept. 18, 1941 in Lime Springs, Iowa, the daughter of Abner and Olivia (Vik) Hendrickson. She graduated from Cresco High School and earned a B.A. in Sociology (cum laude) from St. Olaf College, where she met her future husband, Robin Gryting.

On June 8, 1963, she married Robin Gryting in Minneapolis, Minn., and lived in Shenandoah National Park, Va., and Islamorada, Fla., before settling down in Belview, Minn., to start a family. They had two daughters (Kelly and Randi), then moved to St. Paul, Minn., where Sandy tended to the girls and Robin completed his Master's degree. In 1967, she and Robin moved to Chicago, Ill., where they had another daughter (Terry), then it was on to St. Louis, Mo., in 1970, where a son (Troy) was born.

The four kids kept Sandy busy for several years as she enjoyed making their house a loving home. After the family of six moved to Kendall Park, N.J., in 1973, she entered the workforce as a Montessori preschool teacher. Following another move to Charleston, W.Va., in 1976, Sandy worked as a travel agent and used her benefits to start showing her kids the world. In 1980, the family moved back to Minnesota (Plymouth), where she continued to fulfill her life's mission of helping people by earning her Master's degree in Social Work from the Alfred Adler Institute and working as a family counselor for six years. Sandy continued helping families as a career foster parent after another move to Kirksville, Mo., in 1989. Fifty plus kids later, she retired from foster parenting in 2011 and she and Robin became "snowbirds," purchasing a condo in Surprise, Ariz., where they could spend their winters.

Sandy was a genuinely kind and compassionate woman with a gentle soul and an open mind. Family was always her first priority, followed by a love of music and the beauty of nature. She was a voracious reader and loved traveling, learning about world cultures, solving problems, decorating a home, changing the world for the better, "adventures" with her grandchildren, and advancing the status of women worldwide. She found joy in simple things - a gorgeous sunset, fresh raspberries, a front row parking spot - and had a consistently positive attitude, which continued even through life's most challenging moments. Her legacy of integrity and strength will live on in those she loved, mothered, and mentored.

Sandy is survived by her husband, Robin Gryting; four children: Kelly (Charles Gerlach), Randi (Kris Perry), Terry (Dan Lien), and Troy (Sophie Soumphonphakdy); her foster daughter: Christina Mullen; her sister: Carmen (Elden) Evans; her brother: Roger (Anne) Hendrickson; and grandchildren: Marit, Bailey and Mallory, Kelsey and Tucker, and Hailey, Autumn, Ali and Arianna.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents.
