Joseph Albert, 58

LIME SPRINGS - Funeral services for Joseph "Joe" W. Albert of Lime Springs were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs with Pastor Candraeah Carey officiating. Pallbearers were: Mark Stevenson, David Houdek, Matt Albert, Roger Sinning, Ted Roberts and Jeff Wendell. Interment was held in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Joe, 58, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2012 at his home in Lime Springs.

Joseph W. Albert was born April 28, 1954, in Cresco, Iowa, the son of Lorraine and Tressa (Tibbals) Albert. He graduated from Crestwood High School in 1972, and attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa on a football scholarship. He worked for over 25 years as a forklift operator for Sara Lee in New Hampton. He was an avid football fan who enjoyed all the teams. Joe enjoyed being with his family, especially the nieces and nephews and always hosted the family Christmas gatherings. He was a dedicated son helping his mother out in her home and spent a lot of time visiting her since she moved to the nursing home.

Joe was a lifelong member of the Lime Springs United Methodist Church and enjoyed cooking at home and eating out.

Joe is survived by his mother: Tressa Albert of Cresco; three siblings: Linda (Jim) Belken of Alden, Iowa, Pat (Larry) Houdek of Cresco and John Albert of Lime Springs; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father.



Loretta Armstrong, 99

SPRINGDALE, AR - A Mass of Christian Burial for Loretta E. Armstrong of Springdale, Ark. was held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 5, 2012 at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Springdale. Interment was held in St. Joseph Cemetery in Tontitown.

A Rosary was held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4 at Heritage Funeral Home followed by visitation until 7 p.m.

Loretta, 99, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012.

Loretta Edna Armstrong was born March 13, 1913, in Cresco, Iowa, the daughter of William and Mary (Schneider) Slifka. Loretta was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cresco where she also attended elementary school. She was accepted to attend Good Counsel Academy, a girl's convent school, in Mankato, Minn., during her 9th grade year. The following year she returned to Cresco High School where she graduated with honors, took part in many plays, and was a member of the Thespian Society.

After high school she married Gerald M. Armstrong and they moved to South Dakota for a short time during the Great Depression. They returned to Iowa where they farmed for many years until moving to the Ozarks in 1958. Loretta worked at Daisy Manufacturing in Rogers for 23 years. At the age of 70 she started a new career at Wal-Mart, in Springdale, where she retired after 24 years.

She was a member of St, Raphael Catholic Church for 54 years. She was active in the Ladies Altar Society, arranging the altar flowers, often bringing flowers from her own garden. At the age of 92, she traveled with her church group to Rome to see the Pope.

Loretta loved to garden, often receiving praise for her beautiful flowers. She enjoyed the theater and performed in the Arts Center of the Ozarks production of "My Three Angels". She enjoyed reading and socializing. She volunteered at the Literacy Center helping young children with reading difficulties.

She is survived by three children: Terry Armstrong and wife Pat of Jordan, Minn., Tim Armstrong and wife Christina of Springdale, Geraldine Alvis and husband Gilbert of Tontitown; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1968; a daughter: Shirley Ann Garrison in 2003; and by two brothers; and three sisters.


Karen (Moen) Tanner, 63

CLEVELAND, Mississippi - Karen Lee (Moen) Tanner of Cleveland, Mississippi., 63, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012 due to liver failure. Memorial services will be announced by the family at a later date.

Karen Lee Tanner was born May 18, 1949 in Cresco, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred O. and Ethel E. (Lunningdal) Moen. She was raised on a farm in the beautiful hills of northeast Iowa. Karen was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was educated in Howard County schools, and graduated from Crestwood High School.

She married David James Tanner in 1971. To this union two children were born David James Tanner Jr. and Tanya Nicole (Tanner) Duwell.

Karen attended Arlington Court Reporting School and graduated in 1997 and went on to work for courts in Alabama and Mississippi. She was well respected by her colleagues for both her work ethic and the consideration she showed for others.

Karen enjoyed reading, keeping up with political and current events, bowling with the girls, playing at the casino, caring for her pets, and most of all, sharing a good joke. She did what she could to make others happy. One of her greatest passions was the Angel Tree at Christmas time and encouraging change that would benefit those in need. She adored her grandchildren, and was much loved in return.

Karen is survived by her husband David; son: David Jr. (grandson Landon); daughter: Tanya (husband Paul, grandsons Nic and Jake); sister: Roberta (Blekeberg); brothers: Ron (Gayle) Moen, Ross (Luann) Moen; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, father and grandparents.

Janet Porter, 76

RICEVILLE - Funeral services for Janet A. Porter of Riceville, formerly of Waterford, Mich. were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 at the Cresco Community Chapel in Cresco with the Rev. Michael Simiele and Rev. Jeffery Porter officiating. Interment was held at 2 p.m. on Monday at Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Janet, 76, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012 at the Riceville Family Care & Therapy Center.

Janet A. Porter was born July 8, 1936, in Almont, Mich., the daughter of John A. and Pearl (Spaven) McIntyre. She graduated from Lake Orion High School.

On June 18, 1955, she married Billy G. Porter. To this union seven children were born. They moved from Michigan to Riceville, Iowa in July, 1993.

Janet worked as a retail clerk, cleaned houses, and catered many events until they retired and moved to Riceville. She devoted her life to serving others. She belonged to Cresco Community Chapel in Cresco, Iowa. She loved spending time with her family and traveling to Florida and Texas in the winter months. She loved cooking for her family, sewing, reading, gardening and shopping. She has been a resident at the Riceville Family Care and Therapy since 2010. She loved her fellow residents and caretakers there. Janet is survived by her husband, Billy; six children: Linda (Joel) Yorgey of Riceville, Bonnie (Bob) Crawford of Riceville, Rev. Jeffrey (Jerrilyn) Porter of Oxford, Mich., Jerri (Peter) Coleman of Pontiac, Mich., Terrie Ann Porter of Haughton, La., and Yvonne Goryca (friend, Paul Snyder) of Farmington, Mich.; grandchildren: Kristi (Nate) Gillen, Benjamin (Teri) Crawford, Mike (Kacie) Crawford, Nick Crawford, Marissa Yorgey, Jillian and Jenna Porter, Steven and Holly Goryca; three great-grandchildren: Zachary, Austin, and Hayle Gillen; a sister: Evelyn Bugenski of Washington, Mich.; two brothers: William (Judith) McIntyre of Prescott Valley, Ariz. and John (Pat) McIntyre of Oxford, Mich.; two sisters-in-law: Joann McIntyre of Owasso, Mich. and JoAnne (Dick) Hoag of Rochester Hills, Mich.; two brothers-in law: Daniel Porter of Stuart, Fla. and Kenneth (Mary Ellen) Porter of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant son: Steven; her parents: John and Pearl McIntyre; her in-laws: Floyd and Dorothy Porter; two brothers: J.D. McIntyre and Emerson McIntyre; sister-in-law: Carolyn Porter; brother-in-law: Chet Bugenski; and three nephews: Daniel, Jim, and David Bugenski.


Carol Banks, 67

CRESCO - Carol Banks, 67, of Cresco died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Family will greet friends from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. No other public services will be held. A private family inurnment will be held in the Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, Iowa at a later date.

Carol Banks was born Nov. 21, 1944 in Spring Grove, Minn. the daughter of Rolland and Rose (Kimber) Stockman. Growing up she attended rural schools and later the Lime Springs, Iowa public school as her family later settled there. Carol relocated to Rochester, Minn. as a young woman and worked in the restaurant and cleaning fields. This is where she began her family with the birth of two sons, and married Dennis Delaney. In 1966 she was married to Donald Banks of Pine Island, Minn., and three more boys were born over the next five years. They separated in 1974 and Carol was tasked with raising her beloved five sons who were the center of her life, and her proudest of achievements. As time passed and her sons were grown she found herself returning to the Lime Springs area where she was a clerk at a local gas station and truck stop. It is here she met hundreds of friends who enjoyed her entertaining personality. Carols next move was to Cresco. She was employed with Featherlite until her retirement.

Carol loved her freedom and liked to stay busy, driving her car almost every day and going shopping, visiting and running errands. She also enjoyed the company of her friends and family including 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Lime Springs.

Carol is survived by her sons: Rick (Jeanette) of Preston, Minn., Dan of Mabel, Minn., Don (Heidi) of Rushford, Minn., Marc (Lynette) of Waucoma, and Randy (Patty) of Cresco; two sisters: Henrietta (Ronald) Engelhardt of Decorah and Evelyn (Dale) Quam of Decorah; two brothers: Roger (Tina) of Yuca Vally, Calif. and Marc (Maxine) of Lime Springs; two aunts: Kathleen Powers and Vivian Kimber; and two uncles: Robert and Gail Kimber.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister: Betty; and two brothers: Ronald and Larry.


John Byrnes

CRESCO - Funeral services for John "Jack" Byrnes of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 3-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco.

Jack, 82, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 at home.

Jack went in to the Coast Guard right after school and retired after 20 plus years. After returning to Cresco he worked in construction, building elevators. Jack went on to own a construction business.

For 40 years, Jack owned a sewing machine business, repairing all makes and models of sewing machines and vacuum cleaners.

In July of 1976 Jack married Darlene Albertson. Jack loved taking cruises, riding on the Harley with Darlene, spending many years on the Mississippi River on their boathouse, fishing, and being around family and friends. He also spent many years involved with the Driftrunners Snowmobile Club, teaching the safety course for 10 years, helping with trail work, and just being a valued member. Jack will be missed by his family and friends, also by his family cats, Slick, Pretty, and Puff.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene; sons: Mike (Margaret) Byrnes and Tom (Julie) Byrnes and families all of Decorah; Robert (Becky) Albertson of Defiance, Ohio; grandson: Brad (Michelle) Lingbeck of Broomfield, Colo.; a sister: Betty Moen and family of Cresco; along with several nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter: Jeanne Lingbeck; and a brother: Robert.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to HOCA or North Iowa Hospice.

Roy Culp, 79

TUTTLE OK – Funeral services for Roy C. Culp of Tuttle, Okla. will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012 at the Yanda & Son Funeral Home, 1500 West Vandament, Yukon, Oklahoma. Interment will be held in Tuttle, Okla.

Roy, 79, died Saturday afternoon, Nov. 17, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.

Roy Conrad Culp was born Nov. 15, 1933, in Tuttle, Okla., the son of Conrad Culp and Velma (McFall) Culp. From a young age, Roy was always a high energy person who loved dedicating his time to family, civic and charitable projects. While still in high school he found his partner for life Elva Yuvonne Yockey.

After serving his country in Germany with the U.S. Army Roy and Yuvonne were married. Roy worked with American Trailers in Oklahoma City for 22 years and was involved in a joint venture between ALCOA aluminum and American Trailers in developing the first aluminum semi tractor trailer in 1963. In 1973 Roy with partners James Welchel, Don Musgrove and son Rodney Culp founded Featherlite Trailers. Featherlite was the first and original aluminum gooseneck livestock-horse trailer developed for the North American trailer market. After selling the Featherlite Trailer Company in 1988, Roy semi retired, working with his son Rodney in building and developing a second aluminum trailer company, Exiss Trailers in 1994.

Roy touched many lives and made significant contributions to the North American Trailer market.

Roy is survived by his wife of 56 years, Yuvonne Culp; three children, son: Rodney Culp; daughters: Cheryl Spiva and Jennifer Osterberger; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother: Velma McFall Culp Cox; his father: Conrad Culp; stepfather: F.R. Cox; infant brother: Charles Luther Culp; infant twins: (no name given to these children); and brothers: J.C. Culp, Earl Culp and Burl Culp.

Helen Hron, 86

CRESCO – Helen Hron, 86, of Cresco died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco, Iowa.

Private family services will be held at a later date at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 404 North Elm St., Cresco. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Helen A. Hron was born Jan. 30, 1926 in Howard County the daughter of Vincent and Rose (Pisny) Hron. After high school, Helen taught in a one-room country schoolhouse for a few years. She retired from Sara Lee after many years of employment.

She is survived by three sisters: Marie Sebastian of Cresco, Evelyn Andresen of Cresco and Wilma (Dick) Makinster of Marion, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Joseph, James, and William Hron; brothers-in-law: Gerald Courtney, Thomas Andresen, and Donald Sebastian; and nephews: Wayne Sebastian and Danny Courtney.

Raymond Morrison, 96

KIMBERLY, WI - A memorial service for both Raymond W. and Carolyn Morrison will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Keosaukua, Iowa with Reverend Douglas Harding officiating.

Raymond, 96, died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012 with family by his side at the Grand Horizons Community Based Residential Facility in Kimberly, Wis. He died after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Raymond William Morrison was born Dec. 24, 1915, in Keosauqua, the son of James and Anna (Forbes) Morrison. He attended schools in Van Buren County, graduating from high school in 1933. He attended Iowa State University and Minnesota State where he earned a Master's Degree in Dairy Science before being called to active military duty in 1941. Raymond served in Europe, fighting in the battle of the bulge, from September 1944 to June, 1945. He went on to serve a total of 30 years as a reservist, retiring as a full colonel in 1970.

Raymond married Carolyn Pope in December 1941, having met his college sweetheart while attending Iowa State. The couple had three children, Guy James (deceased), Anne Martha (Portage, Michigan) and Mark Alan (Karen - Combined Locks, Wis.) and were married for 67 years. During Raymond's working years with Kraft Foods and Sealtest Dairy the couple resided in New York, Chicago, Milwaukee and finally Philadelphia. In 1980 Raymond retired and moved to his home state of Iowa to be close to family. He and Carolyn resided in Cresco, serving the community through many volunteer activities for 27 years. As Raymond and Carolyn's needs changed, they moved to Wisconsin in 2007 to be closer to his son and daughter-in-law Mark and Karen Morrison. Carolyn died in December 2009.

While Raymond served as a corporate professional for many years, he remained a son of the Iowa soil throughout his life. He was ultimately practical in his lifestyle and outlook, and forever dutiful to his community, country and family.

Raymond is survived by daughter: Anne; daughter-in-law: Adriann Fried; son and daughter-in-law: Mark and Karen Morrison; grandchildren: Michael Morrison (Erika), Matthew Morrison (Fiance Mary Adamson), John Branstetter, and Michael Branstetter; and a brother: Craig Morrison (Flossie) of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his brothers: Paul and Warren.

Arthur Aegler, 93

CRESCO - A memorial service for Arthur Aegler of Cresco was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Arthur, 93, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012.

Arthur Aegler was born Feb. 13, 1919.

On Nov. 20, 1939 he married Leona Young. They were blessed with four children: Susan Jertson of Winona, Minn, Marian Aegler of Decorah, Carl Aegler of Eagan, Minn. and Martha Aegler of Decorah. He was very proud of and loved his six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Art operated the family farm north of Cresco for nearly 60 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Carl and Ida Aegler; a sister: Helen Lefrink; and a brother: John Aegler.


Marlys Gronwoldt, 84

RICEVILLE - Funeral services for Marlys D. Gronwoldt of Riceville were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville with Rev. Michael Parris and Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Interment was held in Sunnyside Cemetery in Charles City at 2:00 p.m. on Monday.

Marlys, 84, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012 at the Riceville Family Care and Therapy Center surrounded by her children.

Marlys Darlene Gronwoldt was born Oct. 29, 1928, in Saratoga Township of Howard County Iowa, the daughter of Leona (Merrill) and Martin Souhrada. Marlys attended rural school for elementary education and then graduated from Riceville Community High School in May 1947. She was baptized on Feb. 15, 1948 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Riceville, Iowa. She was also confirmed at St. Peter's.

On March 30, 1948 she married Marvin William Gronwoldt at St. Peter's of Riceville. They were the parents of 11 children.

Marlys was strong in her faith. She provided care for her father-in-law for many years. She was active on the farm and enjoyed doing volunteer work. Some of the groups she was active in throughout her lifetime include St. Peter's Ladies Circle, Immanuel Lutheran Ladies Aide, Sunday school teacher at Immanuel Lutheran and Riceville Rest Home Ladies Auxiliary. She was affectionately known as "The Ripper" for St. Peter's quilting group. She provided rides for members of the community, watched and took in children of friends when the need arose, she made food for local bake sales, gardening - especially her flowers, traveling and going out to eat.

She enjoyed attending school and church events for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also Riceville's Mother of the Year in 1966. She was an employee of Riceville Rest Home in the laundry and housekeeping department.

Survivors include her children: Darlene (Harold) Seidel of Riceville, Marvin Jr. of Riceville, Loren "Putts" (Bonnie) of Riceville, Cheryl (Paul) Kunze of Colby, Wis., Leon of Mason City, Russell "Whitey" of Riceville, Charlene Atkins of Marshfield, Wis., Kenneth (Nicole) of Lime Springs and Danny (Sandra) of Riceville; a son-in-law: David (Meryl) Hemann of Janesville, Wis.; 17 grandchildren; one step granddaughter; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Marketta Souhrada of Riceville, Betty Gronwoldt of Riceville and Edna Sir of Elma.

Marlys was preceded in death by her husband: Marvin on May 26, 1999; daughter: Linda Hemann; son: Lynsey; grandsons: Chad Gronwoldt and Allen Hemann; her parents; her brothers: Darrell and Russell; and sister: Marlene (Souhrada) Gronwoldt.


Gladys Aberg-Anderson, 86

SACRAMENTO, CA - Gladys M. Aberg-Anderson, 86, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 in Sacramento, Calif. In April 2012 Gladys became suddenly and gravely ill. Her wish was to stay home with her family. During her last days she was surrounded by her daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, Nala the cat, and Sutter Care at Home Hospice.

Gladys Marleys Aberg-Anderson was born Feb. 1, 1926 in Saratoga.

On June 20, 1946, she married Harold Anderson at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. They started their new life in Decorah where they welcomed Gerald and Marian.

In November 1949 they left family, friends and all they knew to start a new life in the San Fernando Valley. They first settled in Burbank where Barbara joined the growing family. In 1954 they bought a home in Sylmar, Calif. where they lived until 1995. She and Harold moved to Bend, Ore., lived in Snow Berry Retirement Community until 2000, then moved to Sacramento, Calif. where they lived with Marian's family.

Gladys is survived by her children: Gerald Anderson (Shirley) of Bend, Ore, Marian Boncato (Ed) of Sacramento, Calif., and Barbara Romaine (Roger) of Dayton, Nev.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; siblings: Helen Kakac, Dorothy Woods, Harold (Greta) Aberg, Gerald Aberg, Ronald Aberg and Donald (Judy) Aberg.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Harold Anderson on Oct. 2, 2007; her parents: Martin and Julia Aberg; brothers: Clarence Aberg and Eugene Aberg; and sisters: Martha Joann Aberg (stillborn) and Ruth Duneman.
