Ray Ewalt, 95

HARMONY, MN – Funeral services for Ray E. Ewalt of Harmony, Minn., were held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, June 4, 2012 at the Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony. Interment was held in Greenfield Cemetery in Harmony.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony handled the arrangements.

Ray, 95, died Friday, June 1, 2012 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah following a short illness.

Ray Edward Ewalt was born March 18, 1917 in Bristol Township in Fillmore County, Minn., the oldest son of Burleigh and Tillie (Mouw) Ewalt.


Everett Junge, 80

HARMONY, MN – A funeral mass for Everett E. Junge of Harmony, Minn., will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony with Msgr. Donald Schmitz officiating. Interment will be held with military graveside rites in Bristol Cemetery in rural Harmony.

Friends were to call at the Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston on Tuesday 5-8 p.m. and at the church today, Wednesday an hour before the service.

Everett, 80, died Sunday morning, June 3, 2012 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Everett E. Junge was born Aug. 23, 1931, in rural Mower County, west of Spring Valley, Minn., the son of William and Margaret (Long) Junge. He was raised in rural Wykoff and the Prairie Queen area of rural Preston. He attended Prairie Queen School and graduated from Preston High School in 1950. He farmed with his brother LeRoy until he was drafted into the US Army in February 1954. He served for two years attending signal school in Georgia and then being stationed at Ft. Huachuca, Ariz., Upon his discharge, he returned to farming on a farm west of Harmony in the Bristol Center area while also attending Veterans Agriculture classes in Fillmore County.

On July 12, 1958, he married Eleanor Scheevel at St. Columban Catholic Church in Preston. They made their home on the farm west of Harmony, moving to Bristol Center in 2001.

Everett farmed before semi-retiring and driving semi, working at Gehling sales, the Lanesboro Sales Barn and delivering new cement trucks for McNeilus Companies all over the United States.

He was a member of the American Legion in Harmony and was a past commander and officer. He was a member of Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony. He bowled for many years, loved to golf, was a past secretary and treasurer of DHIA and took great pride in his dairy herd. He loved to fish and had fished for walleye in Minnesota, Canada and South Dakota; salmon in Lake Michigan; halibut in Alaska; had deep sea fished for sail fish in the Pacific off the west coast of Mexico; and had shrimped in the Florida Keys. He loved to travel having been to all 50 states and in the last 20 years spending two weeks in Mexico with family and friends.

Everett is survived by his wife, Eleanor; his children: Ann Thacher, Richard and Michael Junge of Harmony, Katherine (Bruce) Everett of W. Barnstable, Mass., and Robert (Melissa) Junge of Cresco; eight grandchildren: Sara, Barbara (Aaron Nelson), Mary (Josh Presson) Thacher, and Allen, Teresa, Patrick, Hunter and Elana Junge; and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers: Lowell, LeRoy and Dallas Junge.


Lorraine Harkness, 90

RIDGEWAY – Funeral services for Lorraine Harkness of Ridgeway, formerly of Mabel, Minn., were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the Garness Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Mabel with the Rev. Mary Waudby officiating. Interment was in Garness Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery.

Visitation was held 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.

Lorraine, 90, died Sunday, May 27, 2012 at her home.

Lorraine Harkness was born May 4, 1922, in rural Hesper, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence and Fannie (Welch) Iverson. She attended the Chase School and graduated in 1940 from Mabel High School.

On Feb. 22, 1949 she married Carl Vatland. They farmed in Newburg Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota until his passing in 1971. She had also worked at Benson's Store, the Stateline Supper Club, and at the Mabel-Canton Schools as a secretary to the superintendent.

On June 27, 1975 she married Wayne Harkness in South Dakota. They lived in Mabel and then for the last 15 years with her daughters.

She was a member of the Garness Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed camping, traveling, fishing, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and her family.

Lorraine is survived by two daughters: Colleen (Ronald) Halverson of Ridgeway and Naydene (Keith) Reicks of Lourdes; five grandchildren: Brady Halverson, Troy (Shelly) Reicks, Tracy Reicks, Travis Reicks, and Trent (Jenny) Reicks; three great-grandchildren: Quinten, Marjie, and Tyler Reicks; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands: Carl Vatland and Wayne Harkness; her parents; and a sister: Frances Inglett.


John McAllister, 74

CRESCO – A Mass of Christian Burial for John “Chub” McAllister of Cresco was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

John, 74, died Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco due to complications of congestive heart failure.

John McAllister was born Dec. 16, 1937, the son of John A. and Louise (Lickteig) McAllister. He was baptized and confirmed in the Assumption Church. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1956. He ran heavy equipment in the summer and drove semi's in the winter. He started farming full time in 1958 and was named Outstanding Young Farmer in 1969.

In 2005 he was one of eight men in the United States and Canada chosen by Caterpillar to help test the Cat M Series Prototype Grader. He enjoyed doing finish work until failing health made it impossible to continue the job that he loved.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marie; three sons: Patrick (Gail) of Hood River, Ore., Michael (Pamela, deceased‚) of Cresco, Jeff (Shelly) of Cresco; two daughters: Shari of Phoenix, Ariz. and Kathy of Aurora, Ill.; seven grandchildren: Steve (Alyse) of Paton, Iowa, Jessica (Israel Balik), Nathan of Clear Lake, Iowa, Erin of Janesville, Wis., Meghan, Kaitlin, and Austin McAllister of Cresco; two great-grandsons: Brock Balik and Sawyer McAllister; one brother: Donald (Muriely) of Richland Hills, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother: Lloyd.


Millard Runge, 88

HARMONY, MN – Memorial services for Millard H. Runge of Harmony, Minn., were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 4, 2012 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Big Spring in rural Harmony. Interment was held in Big Spring Cemetery.

Millard, 88, died Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the Harmony Health Care Center in Harmony after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

Millard Heinalch Runge was born Feb. 15, 1924, at home on the family farm near Harmony, the son of Carl and Louise (Haas) Runge.

Julie (Neubauer) Wright-Perczak, 45

SAN DIEGO, CA - A Memorial Mass for Julie (Neubauer) Wright-Perczak of San Diego, Calif. will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes, Iowa.

Julie had a Celebration of her Life at her home on May 20 to say farewell to her beloved friends and family.

Julie, 45, died Saturday, June 9, 2012 after almost two years being diagnosed with breast cancer. Julie went through surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, leaving her physically weakened. Her heart gave out. Her legacy is one of courage, grit, and determination in the face of her own illness.

Julie (Neubauer) Wright-Perczak was born Oct. 1, 1966, the daughter of Lloyd Neubauer and Cheryl Neubauer. She is a graduate of Crestwood High School in Cresco and received her BA degree at Arizona State College. She worked and lived in San Diego as a life coach, yoga instructor, and a massage therapist. She gave limitless devotion to her children.

She and two of her friends authored a book entitled "My Mindset."

Julie is survived by her children: Jessica Perczak, David Perczak and Dane Perczak; two sisters: Susan Conroy of Glendale, Ariz. and Jennifer Neubauer of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother: Dan Neubauer of Overland Park, Kan.; her father: Lloyd Neubauer of Lime Springs; her mother: Cheryl Neubauer of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and her grandmother: Vera Price of Cresco.


Norman Johnson, 80

Norman Johnson was born Aug. 17, 1931 on the family farm east of Harmony, the son of Arthur and Edith (Nelson) Johnson.



Camilla Eglseder, 89

GUTTENBERG - Funeral services for Camilla "Millie" Eglseder of Guttenberg will be held at 10:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guttenberg with Rev. Richard G. Gaul officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Guttenberg.

Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19 at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Guttenberg. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.

Camilla, 89, died Friday, June 15, 2012 at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Camilla Eglseder was born Aug. 21, 1922 in Little Turkey, Winneshiek County, the daughter of Daniel and Francis (Tupy) Landa. Millie received her education locally graduating from high school.

On Oct. 24, 1939, she married Julius Balk. They raised their children and for many years, Millie made their home. Later in life

she worked as a factory assembler. Julius died on Sept. 18, 1972. Millie was married to NaValle Eglseder on Sept. 30, 1976 at St. Joseph The Worker Church in Dubuque, Iowa. To this union two more children were born.

Millie enjoyed spending time gardening, cooking, canning, playing Bingo, gambling, playing card games, boating and fishing. Some of her accomplishments in life include her outstanding church attendance, and participation with music at church. As a young girl she had to be taught to speak English as Czech was her native language. Millie's last nine years have been spent living at the care center with Dementia.

Millie is survived by her husband NaValle Eglseder of Guttenberg; children: Jerry (Donna) Balk, Betty (Ray) Meyer both of Guttenberg, Dean (Mona) Balk of Los Angeles, Calif., Bonnie (Chuck) Morarend of Dubuque, Dave (Keri) Balk of San Diego, Calif., John (Karla) Eglseder of Guttenberg and Jerry (Stormy) Eglseder of Bellevue; 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law: Judy Balk; sister-in-law: Sharon Landa of Waucoma; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Julius Balk; daughter: Charlene Balk in infancy; son: Harlan Balk on June 8, 2007; grandson: Dustin Eglseder; her parents; and brother: Wilmer Landa.


David Chihak, 57

CEDAR RAPIDS - Funeral services for David L. Chihak of Cedar Rapids were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at St. Ludmila's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Presider was Father Dennis Juhl and homilist was Jim Berger. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, June 18 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service with a vigil service at 4 p.m.

David, 57, lost his battle with cancer on Thursday, June 14, 2012.

David Lee Chihak was born May 16, 1955 in Ames, the son of Paul and Shirley (Palmersheim) Chihak.

On May 15, 1982 he married Sharon Mitchell in Newhall, Iowa. David worked as an auto mechanic at Kmart/Penske for 25 years and also at Westside Tire for 10 years. David was a devoted husband and father and was always involved with the church and was always eager to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed gardening, tinkering and fixing things.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Chihak; sons: Matthew Chihak and Jeremy (Holly) Chihak both of Cedar Rapids; siblings: Nancy (Ray) Scienzo of Concord, N. H., Michael (Barbara) Chihak of Florissant, Mo., Joan (Paul) Cook of Palatine, Ill., Alan (Yvonne) Chihak of Burr Ridge, Ill., Carl (Zenny) Chihak of Long Beach, Calif., Lori (Marvin) Wilmes of Boone, Iowa, and Roger (Candace) Chihak of Lisbon, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial fund has been established.



Viola Hosek, 93

Viola, 93, died Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Viola Hosek was born Feb. 12, 1919, in Cresco, the daughter of Frank and Lucy (Malek) Hosek. She farmed with her brother Frank.

She was a member of Notre Dame Parish in Cresco.

Viola is survived by relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Frank.


Lawrence Pecinovsky, 79
U.S. Army (1953-1955)

ELMA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Lawrence E. Pecinovsky was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 18, 2012 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Father Nick March officiating. Interment was held in Holy Cross Cemetery in Schley, Iowa.

Visitation was held from 3-7 p.m. on Sunday, June 17 with a rosary recited at 2:45 p.m. and Scripture Service at 6:30 p.m. at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Protivin. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Lawrence, 79, died Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Lawrence E. Pecinovsky was born June 23, 1932, on the family farm in Howard County, the son of Edward M. and Florence (Puffer) Pecinovsky. He entered into the United States Army in December of 1953. Lawrence received his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and was sent to Fort Lawton, Washington for one month of KP duty. His next assignment was Fort Lewis, Washington, where he drove truck and received his discharge in December 1955 with the rank of PFC.

On Oct. 21, 1957 he married Clara Falada at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa. Lawrence enjoyed being outside and tinkering around the farm, checking on his animals, listening to Polka music, and looking through tractor books.

Surviving is his wife, Clara of Elma; a son: Gerald (Jolynn) of Protivin; a daughter: Joan (Dennis) Best of Fort Atkinson; grandsons: Levi and Izaack Best; his sister: Cornelia Knutson of Elma; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.


Dorothy Wernett, 90

CRESCO - Funeral services for Dorothy Wernett of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 18, 2012 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment was in Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, Iowa.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Dorothy, 90, died Wednesday, June 13, 2012 with her family and friends by her side at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.

Dorothy Wernett was born Nov. 5, 1921, the daughter of Oscar and Genevieve Wilbur. She grew up and attended school in the Burr Oak area.

She met and married Perry Mailey in 1939. To this union, two children were born, Ann Marie and Perry Paul, Jr. Following her husband Perry's passing, Dorothy married Charles Wernett in 1944. To this union five children were born, David Charles, Sharon Kay, Cheryl Darlene, Duane Alfred, and Frank Larry.

Dorothy was always a very religious woman, belonging to the Immanuel Lutheran Church since 1955, where she attended services regularly. She was an active member of the Women's Committee and Wednesday Church Fellowship.

She loved having large family meals for Sunday dinner with lots of friends and family. She could always play a mean game of cards, and there were not many she didn't know. She also belonged to a card club, loved watching wrestling with her son David, and going on Cheryl and Jerry's family vacations when she could. She loved spending the holidays together and especially her birthday parties, including her most recent 90th birthday. In later years, she attended Howard County home daycare several days a week, becoming a permanent resident in 2006.

Dorothy is survived by a son: Duane Wernett of Rochester, Minn.; two daughters: Ann Deihl of Spring, Texas and Cheryl Gram of Newton; one sister: Shirley Solem of Minneapolis, Minn.; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two husbands: Perry Mailey and Charles Wernett; three sons: Perry Mailey, Jr., David Wernett, and Frank Wernett; one daughter: Sharon Richardson; her parents; and all but one of her siblings.

Charlotte Owen, 89

MARBLE ROCK — A Funeral Mass for Charlotte Owen, 89, of Marble Rock will be at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, June 28, 2012, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Roseville with Rev.

Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., on Wednesday, June 27, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 423 Bradford St., Marble Rock with a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Thursday.

Charlotte was born on Jan. 13, 1923, in Waterloo/ Black Hawk County, a daughter of Charles Edward and Louise Ann (Seidler) Stowell and died Saturday, June 23, 2012, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs. She received her education in public school graduating from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Waterloo.

S he was united in marriage to Richard J. Stewart in 1945 in Waterloo. She and Richard were blessed with four sons: Gary Prior, Joe Stewart, Mike Stewart and John Stewart; and one daughter Joann Westemeir.

Charlotte was re-married in 1960 to Hadwin Owen in Dubuque. The couple made their home in Waterloo until 1973, when they moved to Marble Rock where they owned and operated The Rock Tavern and Lounge along with the C& H Superette.

Those of us who were privileged to know Charlotte admired her for her Irish humor, her love for fishing, music and family. She was, as we all know, unique in God’s creation. For many years, after the passing of Hadwin, she had the love and affection of her companion Bill Wentworth of Marble Rock. They could always be seen together going on fishing trips, headed out to movies and partaking in numerous other activities together.

Living family members include Gary (Janet) Prior of Charles City, Joann Westemeir of Wildwood, Fla., Mike (Cindy) Stewart of Cedar Falls, John (Betty) Stewart of Marble Rock, Mary (Nate) Heise of Shell Rock, James Owen of Waterloo and Bill Wentworth of Marble Rock. Charlotte also had many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard; second husband, Hadwin,;one son, Joseph Stewart; two step-sons, Don and Michael Owen; one grandson, David Stewart; and her parents, Charles and Louise.
