Edwin Gunhus

Funeral services for Edwin Gunhus were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church in Cresco with the Rev. Gary K. Lee and Intern Erik Lindell officiating. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Edwin died at the Cresco Care Center on the mornig of January 4, 1997 at the age of 89.

Edwin W. Gunhus was born in Winneshiek County on November 11, 1907, the son of Julius and Ingeborg Gunderson Gunhus. He attended the rural schools and farmed until 1951. AT that time he moved to Waterloo and worked for the Titus Mfg. Co. and also as a cemetery caretaker. He retired in 1980 and returned to Cresco.

Edwin married Agnes Schmidt. Later he maried Adeline Hewitt. Both wives preceded him in death.

He is survivied by one step-daughter, Lois Ann Little of Guthrie, IK, one steson, Robert HEwitt of Cedar Falls; five step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Cameron of Cresco and Lillian Slifka of Waterloo. Seven brothers and one sister preceded Edwin Gunhus in death.


Loretta Ott

Loretta Ott, 71, of Cresco died at the Howard County Hospital on Januray 2, 1997.

Memorial services were held at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco at 2:00 on Sunday.

Loretta was born July 17, 1925, at Alta Vista the daugher of Henry and Emma Marvin Boehmer. On July 27, 1946, she married Ervin Ott at Lanesboro, MN.

Loretta was a nurses aide. She also raised Ruby Ott and Alice Ott, both of Cresco and Edward Kureger of Hart, MO.

Surviving her are her daughters, Kay Witt of Cresco, and Connie Miller and Pauline Miller, both of Harmony, MN; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her sister, Esther Benson of Kasson, MN.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Ervin, in 1978.


Susie Conry

Funeral services for Susie Conry, 85, of will be held at 12:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco with the Rev. Michael C. Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Cresco with her grandchildren, Tom Richard and Randy Conry, Kimberly Schmidt, Rebecca Hamblin andTimothy Conry as casket bearers. Conway Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Susie, 85, died Saturday, January 4, 1997, at the Howard County Hospital.

Susie Conry was born February 7, 1911 near Davis Corners the daughter of Thomas and Anastacia Urban Shimek. She attended thr rural school and was a member of OUr Lady of Lourdes Curch.

On January 7, 1930, she married Clyde Conry at the Our Lady of Lourdes Church. After they moved to Cresco, they became members of the Assumption Catholic Church.

She is survived by her children: Cecil of Red Oak, Basil of Lincoln, NE, and Mary Ann Waite of Ft Lauderdale, FL; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchldren; and one borther, Adolph Shimek ofLime Sprngs.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughters, Chloe Vroman; her husband; and seven brothers.


Ellen E. Jones

Ellen E. Jones, 85, of Cresco died Friday, Janauary 3, 1997 at the Cresco Care Center where she had resided since November 1994.

Ellen was born near Lime Springs on October 27, 1911 the daughter of Richard H. and Sarah Evans Jones. She attended the rural school.

Ellen never married and stayed home to take care of her parents and also kept house for some of her brothers.

She is the last of a family of 11 children. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sistesr, Dina Thomas, Anna Jones and Apie Jones; seven brothers, Francis, Emerson, Myron, Elmer, Ellis, Edwin and Harold.

There were no formal services. Interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Limes Springs. Conway Funeral Home of Cresco was in charge of arrangements.


Ella Herzeelle

Funeral services Ella Herzeelle, 84, of San Diego, CA, a former Lime Springs resident, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lime Springs. Rev. Bernard Oebser officiated. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Lindstrom Funeral Home of Lime Springs was in charge of arrangements.

She died in San Diego, CA, on February 6, 1997.

Ella Maronde Herzeelle was born December 8, 1912, the daughter of Charles and mary Mauderer Lammers.

Survivors include her daughters, Lola Blackburn of Lime Springs; and marceil Schroeder of San Diego; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna Dieken of Lime Springs; two brothers, harvey Lammers of Chester and Vernie Lammers of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her husbands.


Merle T. Phipps

Merle T. Phipps of Blooming Prairie, MN, and formerly of Ridgeway, were held Friday, January 10, 1997, at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church of rural Austin. Interment was in the church cemetery.

He died suddenly Tuesday, January 7, 1997, while working in one of his shops in Blooming Prairie.

Merle was born November 26, 1920, in Allamakee County the son of LeRoy and Mary Phipps.

He was a retired farmer. He and his wife Dorothy developed their hobby into Merdot, Inc., which made lawn ornaments, urns, holders, etc.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; one daughter, Rhonna Peterson of Maple Grove, MN; and two sisters, Adah Steinmetz and Elaine Doubek, both of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his parents.


Margaret Deutschle

Margaret Deutschle, 76, of Fremont were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 10, 1997, at Fremont United Methodist Church. Rev. Beverly Birtcher officiatred. Interment was in Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery with Fremont Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.

She died Tuesday, January 7, 1997, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

Margaret was born June 18, 1920, in Freemont the daughter of John and Ferne Clark Williams. She graduated from Fremont High School in 1938.

On February 25, 1940, she married Loraine Deutschle in Ottumwa. They farmed in the area for many years, retiring in 1987 and moved into Fremont.

She was a member of the Chat-A-While Club; Sew and So Club; Olive Branch Club; The Fremont United Methodist Church; United Methodist Women; Joyce's Circle; and had been active for many years in the church choir.

She is survived by her husband; one son, Larry Deutschle of Fairfield; one daughter, Nita Hackman of Cresco; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clark E. Williams of Dows, and Stephen L. Williams of Ottumwa; one sister, Johnita Johnson of Preston, MO.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Thomas Williams; and two sisters, Frances Gruber and Eleanor Russell.


Marguerite Sylvia Betts Bishop

Funeral services for Marguerite Sylvia Betts Bishop were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 13, 1997, at Cresco Community Chapel. Interment was in Sanderson Cemetery in Ridgeway.

Marguerite resided in Cresco until 1990 when injuries caused by severe osteoporosis confined her to bed in a nursing home near her daughter in Illinois. She died January 9, 1997, at Cumberland Nursing Home in Greenup, IL.

She was born July 4, 1918, near Cresco, the daughter of William and Ida (Ofstedahl) Betts.

On January 10, 1946, Marguerite was united in marriage to Jack C. Bishop.

She is survived by one son, Al Bishop of Linden, TN; one daughter, Patricia Wagner of Yale, IL; five grandchildren; six sisters, Katherine Stinson, Ellen Stinson and Beatrice Hovey, all of Cresco; Mildred Hall of Lincoln, NE; Angeline Greenwood of Fridley, MN; and Betty Maley of Rochester, MN; three brothers, Edwin Betts of Agoura, CA; Vern Betts of Protivin; and Charles Betts of Lanesboro, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister; and one brother.


LaVerna M. Kurse

A mass of Christian burial was held Saturday, February 1 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Meyer for LaVerna M. Kurse with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating.

Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Meyer. Hatten & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

LaVerna, 79, died January 29, 1997, after a three month illness at the home of her son, Jerry, at McIntire.

LaVerna M. Rauson was born July 29, 1918 the daughter of Chester and Loretta (Regan) Rauson. She graduated from high school at Riceville. She taughter school at the Wapsie Rural School, McIntire, for about six years and was empoloyed as a Lab Technician at the Osage Hospital for two and one half years.

On June 24, 1943, she married Paul Kruse. They farmed int the McIntire area.

She is survivied by six children: Jerry of McTire, Tom of Stacyville, Jim of Stacyville, Mary Olson of Winona and twins, Richard and Robert of McIntire; 13 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by hre husband, Paul, and her parents.


Helen Nierling

Funeral services for Helen Nierling, 89, of Cresco were held Friday, January 17, at the United Methodist Church in Cresco with the Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiating. Interment was in the Oak Lawn Cemtery. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Helen died at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco on Monday, January 13, 1997.

Helen Nierling was born April 26, 1907, in Waukon, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Coldin) Davis. She graduated from high school and went on to obtain a degree as a registered nurse.

In January of 1932, she married Paul Nierling.

She is survivied by one daughter, Mary Jo Nierling opf Kingsville, TX; one son, Don of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marion Winters of Oklahoma City, OK.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Dean and Robert Grant and her sister, Evelyn.


Gladys Wenthold

Gladys Wenthold, 80, died Friday, Janaury 10, 1997 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco. Funeral services were held at noon Monday, January 13 at St. Joseph's Catholic church in Cresco with the Rev. Michael C. Fitzgerld officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemtery. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Gladys Marie Wenthold was born June 20, 1916 in Winner, SD, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Heying) Gesing.

On November 19, 1941, she married Aloysius Wenthold at Waukon. They made their home o the farm and Gladys remained on the farm until she had to enter the nursing home.

She was a member of St. Jospeh's Catholic Church and the Altar andRosary Society.

She is survivied by her children: Phyllis Arendt of Decorah, Robert Wenthold of Bethesda, MD and Mary Ann Mahaffey of Madison, WI; seven grandchldren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Joseph Gesing of Waukon; five sisters Eunice Henderso and Magdalene Lavine, both of San Francisco, CA, Gertrude Gesing and Betty Gesing, both of Santa Monica, CA, and Rita Johnson of Berkeley, CA.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Ralph and Ivo Gesing; and one sister, Irene Frana.


Edith Ring

Funeral services for Edith Ring of Riceville, were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 20, 1997, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville. Rev. Matthew Versemann officiated. Interment was in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery south of Riceville with Conway Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She died Thursday, January 16, 1997, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Edith Maxine Ring was born on September 18, 1914, at Rose Hill, IA, the daughter of Thomas and Daisy (Perkins) Denney. She attended the Oskaloosa Elementary School, moved to Howard County and finished her schooling at the Oakdale Township School near LeRoy.

She was united in marriage to Richard Jones in 1930, and later married Clarence Ring in 1947 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville.

Edith belonged to the St. Peter's Lutheran Ladies Aid. She enjoyed sewing and was also an avid card player.

Survivors include her husband; her children: Beverly Valencic of Waukegan, IL; Richard Jones of Lodi, WI; Thomas Jones of Guam, U.S.A.; William Ring of Manly, IA; and Linda Kinneman of Riceville; a son-in-law, Edward Pichelman; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one brother Bill Denney of Davenport, IA.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Pichelman; one son, Herbert Jones; two grandchildren; her parents; and three brothers, Clifford Denney, Homer (Bud) Denney and Thomas Denney, Jr.


Delia Klatt

Funeral services for Delia Klatt of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 18, 1997, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Rev. Bruce Hobert officiated. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery in the spring with arrangements by Conway Funeral Home.

She died Tuesday, January 14, 1997, at the Cresco Care Center.

Delia Florence Klatt was born in Winneshiek County, east of Cresco, March 13, 1910, the daughter of Bud and Catherine (Beveridge) Davis. She attended the rural school and graduated from Cresco High School in 1927.

She was united in marriage to Ernest Blaser at the Congregational Church in Cresco. She worked as a clerk in Grimm's Superette and later in Boeke's Pharmacy.

On March 17, 1963, she was united in marriage to Elmer Klatt at Mountain Home, ID. They returned to Cresco to make their home.

Delia was an avid gardener, she crocheted and knitted.

She is survived by her husband; one son, Eugene Blaser of Cedar Falls, IA; three daughters, Dorothy Aberg of Cresco; Catherine Bakke of Lanesboro, MN; and Gayle Pruitt of Mountain Home, ID; three step-children, Marilyn Druyee of Plainfield, IA; Lois Klatt of Chicago, IL; and Gordon Klatt of Perry, IA; 18 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her first husband; three sons, Gordon Blaser; Donald Blaser; and Paul Blaser; three brothers, Howard Davis; Ralph Davis; and Leon Davis.


Mary Lou McCall

A time of rembrance for friends and family will be held for Mary Lou McCall at the Griffin Funeral HOme in Stewartville from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, January 22.

Mary Lou, 47, of Stewartville, MN, died Sunday, January 19, 1997, of a cerebral hemmorage at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Mary Lou McCall was born February 18, 1949, at Cresco. She grew up in Cresco and graduated from Crestwood High School and Clackamas Community College in Oregon where she became a Certified Medical Assistant. She was employed and lived at Gresham, OR, for 7 years. In 1984, she moved to Stewartville where she currently was employed in the ultra sound department at May Clinic.

On June 17, 1968, she married Vern Milligan and they were later diviorced.

She is surviived by her daugher, Lisa Jean McCall of Stewartville; two brothers, Scott Hatfield of Sparta, WI, and James Zdanowicz of Cresco; and three sisters, Robin Goldsworthy of Rochester, Kathy Hdrich of Duluth, and Jane Bigalk of Harmony.

She was preceded in death by her father.


Mary G. Affeldt

Funeral services for Mary G. Affeldt of Riceville were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 19, 1997, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Rev. Matthew Versemann officiated. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville with Lindstrom Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She died Thursday, January 16, 1997, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Elma.

Mary was born November 10, 1916, in Forestville, Fillmore County, Minnesota, the daughter of Louis A. and Ada D. Tibbits Grabau. She was baptized March 31, 1918. She attended local schools and after graduating from high school, she attended one year of Normal to be a teacher. Mary was confirmed into the Lutheran faith as an adult.

She was united in marriage to Harold Affeldt November 10, 1935, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

She enjoyed her role as a farmer's wife for 50 years.

Survivors include three daughters, Edith Asfahl and Jane Groth of Riceville; and Margie Hunt of Millsap, TX; two sons, Louis of Destrehan, LA; and Philip of State Center, IA; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rebecca Alexander of Spring Valley, MN; and Louise Hendrickson of Lime Springs.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Howard Grabau and George Grabau; and one sister, Alice Lubbert.


Delbert Kuennen

Funeral services for Delbert Kuennen, 66, of Lawler, were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 21, 1997, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler. Rev. Ivan Nienhaus and Rev. Marvin Salz officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery with Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He died early Saturday morning, January 18, 1997, at his residence following a long illness.

Delbert was born May 28, 1930, near St. Lucas, the son of Nick and Frances (Schaufenbuel) Kuennen. He attended school in St. Lucas graduating in 1949.

On September 28, 1953, he married Mary Ann Shileny at the Assumption Church in Little Turkey, IA.

He was an Air Policeman in the Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1955. He lived in Alexandria, LA from 1953-1955, on a farm near Jackson Junction from 1955-1978 and moved to Lawler in 1978.

He was a member of the Turkey Valley School Board from 1982-1988, a district manager for Renk Seed from 1978-1979 and a crop hail adjuster from 1979-1992. Other memberships include Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church of Lawler, the Knights of Columbus of Protivin, the American Legion Post #279, of which he is a past Commander, the Commercial Club, a Church Council Member and a former CCD Instructor.

Delbert loved to fish and was an avid outdoorsman. He remained involved in farming following retirement. He enjoyed attending all sporting events, playing cards and traveling.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Randy and Jim of Ft. Atkinson; Ken of Denver, IA; and Gary of Lawler; two daughters, Diane Smith of Cresco; and Lynn Kuennen of DeKalb, IL; 17 grandchildren; his parents; six brothers, Donald and Wilfred of St. Lucas; Richard of Festina; Gaylord of Atlanta, GA; and Dennis and Allan of Cedar Rapids; five sisters, Vic-toria Schmitt of West Union; Leona Bodensteiner of Grinell; Marilyn Nienhaus of Ft. Atkinson; and Norma Wegner and Cora Lee Lynch of New Hampton.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter; and one sister, Ros-alia Kuennen.


Dale Buttolph

Funeral services for Dale Buttolph of Riceville were held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 22, 1997, at the Riceville United Methodist Church in Riceville. Rev. Don Lovejoy and Father John Moser officiated. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville with Lindstrom Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He died Sunday, January 19, 1997, at the Adams Health Care Center in Adams, MN.

Dale Buttolph was born October 15, 1929, in Riceville, the son of Clifton and Irene Hawkins Buttolph.

He was united in marriage to Mary Alice Smith December 28, 1957, at St. John's Rectory in Rochester, MN.

He served in the Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. He was a loader operator for Martin-Marietta until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Keith of Riceville; and Tom of Chester; one daughter, Michelle Lewis of Riceville; three grandchildren; two brothers, Lloyd of Madison, WI; and Kenneth of Anchorage, AK; and four sisters, Dorothy Wagner of Waterloo; Delores Henniger of Greensboro, NC; Kathryn Knapp of Washburn; and Betty Koch of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother.


Celia Mihm

Celia Mihm of St. Lucas were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 23, 1997, at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas. Rev. Msgr. Leander Reicks and Rev. Clarence Frana officiated. Interment was in St. John's Cemetery at Ft. Atkinson with Chekal Funeral in charge of arrangements.

She died Monday, January 20, 1997, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Celia (Frana) Mihm was born October 29, 1906, in Calmar, the daughter of Vaclar and Josephine (Matousek) Frana.

On February 5, 1929, she was married to William Doubek at St. Wenceslaus Church in Spillville. He died August 24, 1951.

On June 5, 1954 Celia married William Mihm at St. John's Church in Ft. Atkinson. He died August 24, 1970.

Survivors include three daughters, Elaine Klimesh and Betty Wiest, both of Ft. Atkinson; and Blanche Jirak of Protivin; two step-sons, Merinus and Donald Mihm of St. Lucas; three step-daughters, Alice Rachu of Ft. Atkinson; Bernadine Dietzenback of St. Lucas; and Alfreda Koshatka of Protivin; 12 grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lydia Hruska of Spillville.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands; two great-granddaughters; her parents; five brothers, Steven, William, Henry, Frank and James Frana; and three sisters, Ann Scheidel, Christine Pecinovsky; and Betty Cisler.


Donald Rimrodt

Services for Donald Rimrodt, 67, of Alta Vista were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 1997, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Alta Vista. Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiated.

Interment was in Mount Calvary Cemetery with Conway Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He died Tuesday, January 21, 1997, at his home after a short illness.

Donald Rimrodt was born in Elma on October 27, 1929, the son of Fred and Hazel (Schmidt) Rimrodt. He attended the rural school and graduated from Elma High School.

He was united in marriage on April 30, 1957, to Vera Bouska at Waucoma, IA. They made their home on a farm in the Alta Vista area.

Donald belonged to the Elma/ Alta Vista Sportsmens Club and was a member of St. Bernard's Church.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Jeanette Johnson of Cedar Rapids, IA; Karla Crowell of Littleton, CO; and Barbara Rimrodt of Mason City, IA; three sons, Fredrich and Lee, both of Alta Vista; and Daniel of Matthews, NC; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents


William G. Wentworth

Services for William G. Wentworth, 90, of Cresco were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 24, 1997, at Lindstrom Funeral Home. Rev. Frank Fagerburg officiated. Spring interment will be in New Oregon Cemetery with Lindstrom Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He died Tuesday, January 21, 1997, at Howard County Hospital.

William Gerald Wentworth was born May 27, 1906, in Vernon Springs Township, the son of Austin and Lexy (McKay) Wentworth. He attended school in Cresco.

On January 21, 1931, Bill was united in marriage to Violet Wheeler in Cresco. They made their home in Cresco, then for 20 years between 1946 and 1966 they lived in California.

Bill was a baker and worked for the owners of the Bakery in Cresco and also for the school in custodial. During WWII Bill served in the Navy and baked bread and confections for the sailors.

When his health began to fail he entered the Cresco Care Center where he remained until his death.

Preceding him in death were his wife; two infant children, Gerald and Joyce; seven brothers, George, Bob, Edward A., John, Charley, Art and Frank; and three sisters, Ruth M., Elizabeth and Grace.


Augustine D. O'Donnell

Funeral services for Augustine D. "Gus" O'Donnell, 76, of Slater, formerly of Elma, were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 27, 1997, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Madrid, IA. Interment was in Slater City Cemetery.

He died Friday, January 23, 1997, at the Madrid Home in Madrid from complications from Parkinson's Disease.

Augustine D. O'Donnell was born on December 23, 1920, in Elma, the son of Alphonsus and Edith (Cole) O'Donnell.

He married Jacqueline Stratton on August 1, 1945, in Havard, NE.

He served in the South Pacific in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Augustine worked as a carpenter for Capop Homes in Des Moines, retiring in 1970.

He was a member of St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Madrid and of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by one daughter in infancy; two grandchildren; his parents; two brothers; and four sisters.


Bess M. Trachta

Funeral services for Bess M. Trachta, 92, of Portland, OR, formerly of Cedar Rapids were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at All Saints Catholic Church. Rev. Charles Lang officiated. Interment was in St. John's Cemetery. with Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East in charge of arrangements.

She died early Sunday, January 26, 1997, in Rest Harbor Care Center in Gresham, OR, after a brief illness.

Bess was born September 3, 1904, in Cresco, the daughter of Joseph and Jennie Zak Wacha.

She married Lumir J. Trachta on September 3, 1929, in Lourdes.

Bess began working for the A.W.H. Lenders family for almost 30 years. She also worked for the Dr. John Kanealy family for more than 30 years.

In 1989, she moved to Oregon to live with her son.

She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church.

Survivors include one son, Marvin J. Trachta of Portland, OR; three grandchildren; and three sisters, Anna Laue of Cedar Rapids; Mary Chihak of Waterloo; and Nettie Burri of Denver, CO.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen DeWalle and Emily Elliott; and two brothers, Bill and Frank Wacha.


Paul J. Huinker

Services for Paul J. Huinker, 80, of Ridgeway, were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 27, 1997, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Rev. Allen M. Schmitt officiated. Interment with military rites was held in the church cemetery with Conway Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. He died Friday, January 24, 1997, at LaCrosse Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI.

Paul Joseph Huinker was born January 14, 1917, at Festina, IA, the son of Edmund and Matilda (Pitzenberger) Huinker.

He graduated from Calmar High School in 1935, and sold insurance prior to entering the U.S. Army where he served from 1943-1946.

Paul was united in marriage on June 10, 1946, to Georgina Sobolik of Ridgeway at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. They began farming near Ridgeway.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the VFW, the Protivin Senior Citizens and the Ridgeway Chamber.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Marilyn Kuennen of Ft. Atkinson, IA; one son, Roger of Decorah, IA; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Alvin of Farner, IA; Dennis of Calmar, IA; and David of Decorah, IA; and three sisters, Leona Watt of Dubuque, IA; De Etta Hemesath of Ridgeway; and Gladys Elsbernd of Decorah.

He was preceded in death by his parents.


Carol Sletten

Funeral services for Carol Sletten, 59 of Alma City, MN, were held at 11:00 a.m. January 28, 1997, at Trinith Lutheran Church in Janesville, MN. Pastor Larry Griffen officiated. Interment was in the Alma City Cemetery with Kinder-Dennis Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She died suddenly Friday, January 24, 1997, at her home in Alma City, MN.

Carol June Knutson was born June 19, 1937, in Chickasaw County the daughter of Jeff Knutson and Cora (Vaala) Knutson. She was baptised on July 4, 1937, at the Jerico Lutheran Church. She was confirmed at the Jerico Lutheran Church on June 1, 1952. She attended thr rural schools of Chickasaw County.

She was united in marriage on May 15, 1957, to Elroy Sletten. She was employed at Brown Printing Company in Waseca and Heritage House in Janesville, and most recently she operated a cleaning service.

Survivors include her husband; one son, LaVern Sletten; one daughter, Julie Meiggs of Shawboro, NC; one granddaughter; one brother, Lowell Knutson of Lawler; and two sisters, Ardis Hereid of New Hampton; and Marcia Wagoner of Lawler.

Sher was preceded in death by twin children; her parents; and two brothers, Orlo and James.


Augustine D. "Gus" O'Donnell

Funeral services for Augustine D. "Gus" O'Donnell, 76, of Slater, formerly of Elma, were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 27, 1997, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Madrid, IA. Interment was in Slater City Cemetery.

He died Friday, January 24, 1997, at the Madrid Home in Madrid from complications from Parkinson's Disease.

Augustine D. O'Donnell was born on December 23, 1920, in Elma, the son of Alphonsus and Edith (Cole) O'Donnell.

He married Jacqueline Stratton on August 1, 1945, in Havard, NE.

He served in the South Pacific in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Augustine worked as a carpenter for Capop Homes in Des Moines, retiring in 1970.

He was a member of St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Madrid and of the American Legion.

Wilma Caroline Hintz

.Services to be held for Wilma Caroline Kintz, of Chester, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Satruday, February, 1997, at Chester United Methodist Church. Rev. Robert Holdorff will officiate. Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Lime Springs with Lindstrom Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Wilma Caroline Hamann was born August 8, 1906, near Davenport in Scott County, IA, the daughter of Henry and Louisa (Rier) Hamann. The family moved to rural Chester when she was very young. She received her education in Chester Township and graduated from Chester High School in 1925.

She was married to Harry W. Kintz at Mason City, IA, on June 4, 1936. Following their marriage they engaged in farming near Lime Springs, Cherry Grove, MN, Bonair and Chester.

In 1969 she retired and moved to Chester. In 1990 she moved to the Howard Residential Care Facility in Cresco where she remained until she moved to Pierre, SD. She lived with her son the last year of her life.

Wilma was active in church and senior citizen activities in Chester. She was a member of Chester United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her son, Raymond H. Kintz of Dupree and Fort Pierre, SD; her daughter Mary Louisa Sanny of Beatrice, NE; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, infant son, Roger Dean Kintz; her parents; six brothers, Alfred, William, Grover, Henry, Herbert and Arnold Hamann; and two sisters, Hulda James and Edna Bailey.


Billy Joe Bean

Funeral services for Billy Joe Bean, 48 of Lime Springs were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 1997, at Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Nashua. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery with military rites.

He died Tuesday, January 28, 1997, at Howard County Hospital as the result of a homicide.

Bill Joe was a truck driver in construction and served as a Sgt. E-5 with the military police in the U.S. Army from 1969-1971.

Survivors include three daughters, Debra Mashek of Lawler; Trisha Bean of Alpha; and Kelly Bean of Hot Springs, SD; one son, Bill Joe Bean, Jr.; four brothers, Charles of Summerville, SC; Claire of Bassett; Dennis of Charles City; and Allen LaBayre of Anamosa; three sisters, Carolyn Flores of LeClaire; Lila Junker of Nevada, MO; and Brenda Schweiger of Charles City; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son Jeffery; and his parents.


Christine Ann Grant

Funeral services for Christine Ann Grant, 92, of Preston, MN, were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 1997, at St. Columban's Catholic Church. Fr. Francis Galles officiated. Spring interment will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in Preston with Thauwald Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She died of cancer, Wednesday, January 29, 1997, at her home in Preston.

Christine Ann Marik was born July 24, 1905, in Lourdes, IA, the daughter of John and Mary (Ilauch) Marik. She attended Lourdes Parochial School.

She was united in marriage January 1924, to Richard Regan in Cedar Rapids and the couple were later divorced.

She then lived in the Cresco area where she worked as a cook in Elms and Country Kithcen Cafe.

She married John E. Grant November 22, 1962, in Austin, MN. The couple made their home on a farm in the Granger area until retiring and moving to Preston in 1977.

She was a member of St. Columban's Catholic Church in Preston.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Ronald Regan of Cresco; Clarence Regan of Cedar Rapids; and Donald Regan of Fairfax, IA; three daughters, Peggy Campion of Eyota, MN; Midge Dawson of Westminster, MD; and Patty Lybbert of Cresco; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Woods of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by two sons; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter; four brothers; and three sisters.


Berdene Magnus

 Services for Berdene Magnus, of Cresco, were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 23, 1997, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Pastor Bruce Hobert officiated. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery with Lindstrom Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.

She died Monday, January 20, 1997, at Howard County Hospital after being diagnosed with cancer on January 6, 1997.

Berdene Ethel Smith was born February 10, 1922, the daughter of Walter and Edith Smith. She gre up in the Ringsted area and received her education at Seneca School.

She married Marvin Sanders in December, 1942. The family moved to the Cresco area. They were later divorced. In November, 1979, she married Clair Magnus.

They enjoyed having coffee with their friends and coming to town everyday.

Survivors include her husband; three children, Blaine, Cheryl and Bruce; three step-children, Loren, Ronnie and Janice, grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one brother, Maurice Smith of Fonda, IA.

Preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers, Verl, Vernon and Harold.


Dean Lubbert

Funeral services for Dean Lubbert, 52, of Riceville were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 2, 1997, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville. Rev. Matthew Versemann officiated. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery with Lindstrom Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He died Thursday, January 30, 1997, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Dean was born October 10, 1944, in Osage, IA, the son of Henry and Alice Louise Lubbert. He graduated from Riceville High School in 1963.

He was united in marriage on May 3, 1964, to nancy Anderson at the United Methodist Church in McIntire, IA.

Dean farmed for the next 17 years of his life in the Riceville and LeRoy areas. He drove truct fro 1984 to 1990. In 1991 Dean opened his radiator and tire business.

He served as a township trustee for Oakdale Township for several years and recently joined the Riceville Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Sheila Lubbert of Omaha, NE; Deanna Halverson of Spring Grove, MN; and Stacy Lubbert of Riceville; one son, Cory Lubbert of Riceville; two brothers, Dale of Riceville and Robert of Osage.
