ELMA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Craig E. Worple of Elma was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 2, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Father Ray Atwood officiating. Interment was held in St. Patrick's Cemetery in St. Cecilia, Iowa.

Visitation was held 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 1 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma with a 4:30 p.m. scriptural wake service. Visitation continued an hour at the funeral home prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Craig, 52, died Thursday, March 29, 2012 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.

Craig Edward Worple was born Oct. 18, 1959 in Riceville, the son of John and Mary (Dempsey) Worple. He graduated from Crestwood High School in Cresco in 1978.

On June 9, 1979, he married Nancy Freidhof at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes, Iowa. The couple made their home near Elma. Craig was employed at Great Plains Supply in Elma for several years before becoming employed by Howard County Equity where he worked as a feed truck driver until he retired for health reasons.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, Jimmie Johnson NASCAR racing, watching the Minnesota Vikings and grilling at family functions. He especially loved his children, grandchildren and his pets. Craig was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Elma, the Elma Volunteer Fire Department and Elma Sportsman's Club.

Craig is survived by his wife, Nancy of Elma; his children: Courtney Worple of Rochester, Minn., Marcy (David) Rochford of New Hampton, and Shawna (Mark) Abbas of New Hampton; six grandchildren: Ceana, Jalen, Layla and Lexis Britton, Rylie Rocford and Kaden Abbas; his parents: John and Mary Worple of Elma; one brother: Steve (Kay) Worple of Cresco; his grandma: Frances Dempsey of Elma; and several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather: Ronald Dempsey; his paternal grandparents: Edward and Frieda Worple; a sister: Christine Pietan; and nephew: Blake Worple.

Betty Meyerhoff, 82

DUBUQUE - Services for Betty M. Meyerhoff of Dubuque, formerly of Bernard, Iowa, were held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade with Rev. Judy Heinrich officiating.

There was a gathering of friends and relatives after 3 p.m. before services were held at the funeral home.

Betty, 82, died Monday, March 26, 2012 at Dubuque Nursing and Rehab in Dubuque.

Betty Mae Meyerhoff was born Aug. 29, 1929 in Elma, Iowa, the daughter of John and Hazel (Rhode) Roethler. She is a graduate of Elma High School.

On September 22, 1951, she married Louis J. Meyerhoff at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elma. She was a bookkeeper for Great Plains Lumber Company in Bernard.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, Iowa. She also volunteered for the Elections Board in Dubuque County.

Betty is survived by her husband, Louis of Dubuque; three daughters: Sheila (Richard) Martens of Lime Springs, Karla (Brian) Leichty of North Liberty, and Brenda (Tom) Huff of Cascade; a son-in-law: Ed Voves of Elma; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister: Wanda Ward of Charles City; and one brother: Keith (Avis) Roethler of Elma.

She was preceded in death by a daughter: Debbie Voves on April 20, 1989; a son: Bill Meyerhoff on July 16, 2011; her parents; and her twin brother: Bob Roethler.

A Betty M. Meyerhoff memorial fund has been established.


Merle Mitchell, 85

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Merle J. Mitchell of Cresco was held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Merle, 85, died peacefully Monday, March 26, 2012 surrounded by his family. He suffered from Alzheimer's for the last several years and was cared for at the Patty Elwood Center.

Merle Joseph Mitchell was born July 8, 1926 in Lawler, the second oldest of four children, to Thomas and Loretta (Drew) Mitchell. He grew up on a farm near Davis Corners.

Merle married Adella Kuennen and they lived on a farm near Davis Corners for more than 25 years. They were the parents of seven children: Joann Mitchell Driscoll of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Kathy Mitchell Patito of Sierra Madre, Calif.; Janet Mitchell Gunhus of Cresco; Robert James Mitchell (died at age 10); Richard Merle Mitchell of Rochester, Minn.; Debbie Mitchell Forster (husband Randy) of Boise, Idaho; and Gerald Thomas Mitchell of Cresco. Along with farming, Merle was involved in driving a truck. Merle then began working for Martin Marietta and worked for them for over 25 years. Merle retired from the company at age 78.

Some of his many enjoyments in life were the love of Polka dancing and meeting his brother Michael Mitchell for breakfast in McIntyre, Iowa. On Sundays, Merle loved to take long drives and would put all his kids in the car and drive. He also loved sweets, so much so that he had candy bars in every drawer. Merle has nine grandchildren: Shelly and Jerry Driscoll of Cedar Rapids; Joseph Patito of New York City, New York and Katherine Patito of Ashville, N.C.; Dustin Gunhus of Cresco; Kristina and Nicholas Mitchell of San Jose, Calif.; and Katie and Zachary Forster of Boise, Idaho.

Merle is survived by his children; grandchildren; sisters: Loretta Mitchell Brown of Floyd, Iowa and Mary Mitchell Dvorak of New Hampton, Iowa; along with several nieces and nephews.

Merle was preceded in death by a son: Robert James Mitchell; his parents; and a brother: Michael Mitchell.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco, Iowa.

Elaine Jacobson, 83

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Elaine W. Jacobson of Cresco was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Interment was held in St. Kierans Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Elaine, 83, died Thursday, April 5, 2012 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.

Elaine W. Jacobson was born Sept. 11, 1928 at home in Howard County, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Bernice (Jones) Watson. She grew up on the family farm by Crane Creek near Saratoga, Iowa and graduated from Riceville High School in 1946. Elaine started her 47 year teaching career at Howard County one room country schools, teaching K-8th grade students.

On April 24, 1950, she became a farmer's wife when she married Burdette Jacobson at St. Stephens Church in Chester, Iowa.

Elaine took a small break from teaching to raise their two children. When she resumed her teaching career, she taught K-8th grades at a one room country school north of Cresco. When the country schools closed in 1963, she went to Cresco and taught 5th grade. Elaine received her teaching degree from Upper Iowa University in 1967. She continued teaching 5th grade for the Howard-Winneshiek School District until she retired in 1997 and then was a substitute teacher for another 10 years.

Although teaching was her first love, she had many other interests. She was an avid reader, liked deer hunting, collecting antiques and baking cookies and bread. She enjoyed going to stock car races; she especially enjoyed cheering for her favorite driver Tom Schmitt. Elaine meticulously tended her numerous beautiful flower gardens. She loved baby animals and tried her best to save every one of them. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren lit up her life.

Elaine is survived by a son: Byron Jacobson of Cresco; a daughter: Niane (John) Meyer of Tama; granddaughter: Chris (Doug) Lange of Dubuque; grandson: John (Yaneth) of Iowa City; great-granddaughters: Rahne McIntire, Grace Lange, Skyla Meyer and Ashley Meyer; a sister: Shirley Sizer of Waterloo; sister-in-law: Evelyn Watson of Riceville; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Burdette on Oct. 3, 1997; her parents; a brother: Carrol Watson; and brother-in-law: Bill Sizer.



Evelyn Ryan, 86

DECORAH - A Memorial Mass for Evelyn A. Ryan of Decorah was held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Organist was Mary Beth Bouska and cantor was Cindy Schissel. Songs sung were: "Here I am Lord," "Amazing Grace," On Eagle's Wings," and "How Great thou Art." Lector was Rhonda Bergan and offertory giftbearers were: Ruth Kamp, Theresa Smith and Phyllis Maroushek. Interment was held in St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery in Plymouth Rock, Iowa.

Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah handled the arrangements.

Evelyn, 86, died Sunday, April 1, 2012 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Evelyn Aloysius Ryan was born Jan. 19, 1926, north of Little Turkey, Iowa, the daughter of John and Rose (Schwade) Balik. She attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in Spillville.

On Nov. 26, 1946, she married Edward Ryan at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. They farmed near Plymouth Rock, west of Burr Oak, Iowa for many years.

She enjoyed gardening, doing puzzles, baking, playing cards, reading, listening to polka music and was an active member at St. Agnes Catholic Church. For the last year, Evelyn was a resident of the Barthell Eastern Star Home, where she loved living and participating in their activities.

Evelyn is survived by her 10 children: Ruth Kamp of Decorah, Theresa (Rick) Smith of Waukon, Ethel (Donald) Sylling of Spring Grove, Minn., Tim (Sharon) Ryan of Lime Springs, Leone (Tom) Ferrie of Cresco, Phyllis (Robert) Maroushek of Decorah, Lois Ryan of Decorah, Frank Ryan of Harmony, Minn., Robert Ryan of Cresco, and Anita Ryan of Decorah; 15 grandchildren: Chris (Gretchen), Michelle (Larry), John (Dawn), Rhonda (Carl), Brent, Eric (Catina), Travis, Matt (Alexa), Dawn (Chris), Rodney (Kelly), Dustin, Elizabeth (fiance, Dave), Curtis, Laura, and Amanda; nine great-grandchildren: Lucian, Kyle, Calvin, Max, Bryson, Lyndsey, Abbie, Ella and Kegun; two brothers-in-law: John Kout of New Hampton and Donald DeCou of Decorah; two sisters-in-law: Jane Headington of Austin, Minn. and Doris Balik of Protivin.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Edward Ryan on Nov. 17, 1989; a son-in-law: Kenneth Kamp; her parents: John and Rose (Schwade) Balik; brothers and sisters: Helen Kout, Dorothy (Leonard) Bouska, Richard (Arlene and Gladys) Balik, Marie Balik and Raymond Balik; father and mother-in-law: Frank and Jule (Dahly) Ryan; brothers and sisters-in-law: Louis and Phyllis McCabe, Mae and Francis Gossman, Harold and Marlys Ryan, Layle and Rose Ryan, Doris and Dick Carr, Madonna and Arden Whalen, Anna Grace DeCou, Francis Ryan, and Ron Headington.



Frank Mrachek, 91

 April 2012 CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Frank E. Mrachek of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Father Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 11 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Frank, 91, died Sunday, April 8, 2012 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.

Frank E. Mrachek was born Oct. 4, 1920 on the family farm, the son of Arthur and Stella (Bouska) Mrachek. He attended country school and was a life long resident of Howard County.

On Feb. 15, 1944, he married Ethel Sabelka. Frank grew up farming, and was a proud farmer his whole life.

Frank is survived by his wife Ethel of 68 years; his children: Roger of Charleston, R.I. and Mary Lou (Nick) Brown of Winnetka, Ill.; grandchildren: Stephanie Dohrer, Julie Ackerman, Ryan Mrachek, Catherine Barron, Casey Mrachek, and Michael Brown; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; a sister; and his daughter-in-law: Patti (Knosby) Mrachek.

The family asks that donations be made to the Patty Elwood Center 21668 80th St. Cresco, Iowa.

Bryson Holthaus

PROTIVIN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Bryson Holthaus, newborn son of Alexa Head and Devin Holthaus was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Father Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 14 at the church.

Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Bryson died Thursday, April 5, 2012 at Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

Bryson Holthaus was born April 5, 2012. During his short time with family, he taught them the meaning of unconditional love. Bryson was a brief gift to his family that will live on in their hearts.

Bryson is survived by his parents: Alexa Head and Devin Holthaus of Protivin; his maternal grandparents: Connie (Scott) Kraft of Riceville and Myron Head of Elma; paternal grandparents: Allen and Brenda Holthaus of Cresco; maternal great-grandparents: Harold and Shirley Reuscher of Waverly and Lowell and Sandra Head of Alta Vista; paternal great-grandparents: Leona Whalen of Cresco, Eddie Whalen of Canton, Minn., and Dorothy Holthaus of Cresco; his aunts and uncle: Myranda (Eli Albrecht) Head of New Hampton and their daughter Jaila; Dalton Head of Phoenix, Ariz., Alyvia Ries of Riceville, Rachel (Rod) Vsetecka of Cresco, and their children Danica and Derek; and Sarah Schutte of Cresco and her daughter Haley; and many great aunts and uncles.

His paternal great-grandfather, Severin Holthaus, husband of Dorothy, precedes him in death.


Kenny Burr, 93

FRESNO, CA - Kenny Burr, 93, died peacefully Friday, April 6, 2012 in Fresno, Calif.

Kenny Burr was born and raised in Cresco. He joined the Navy in 1941 after Pearl Harbor and served in both the Pacific and European Theatres. While waiting to be discharged he met Ruth Olsen and they were married in 1946. They returned to Cresco where Kenny operated the C&H Farm Service Station. He sold the station and began farming and was also the golf course superintendent of the Cresco Country Club. After he retired they sold the farm and moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas. Kenny moved to California in 2005 to be close to his children.

Kenny is survived by a son: Tom of Fresno, Calif.; daughters: Nancy Taylor of Denver, Colo. and Mary DeWalle of Redlands, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth in 1995; and daughter: Barbara Beach in 2002.


Doreen Snow, 85

CRESCO - Funeral services for Gladys "Doreen" Snow of Cresco were held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 13, 2012 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Interment was held in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.

Doreen, 85, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Gladys "Doreen" Snow was born March 26, 1927 in Bristol, England, the daughter of Alfrieda and John Harnell.
 


Don Erbe, 80

RICEVILLE - Funeral services for Don A. Erbe of Riceville will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Rev. Duane A. Lookingbill officiating. Interment will be held in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. today, Wednesday before services at the funeral home.

Don, 80, died Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Riceville Family Care Center in Riceville.

Don Alyn Erbe was born Oct. 2, 1931 at Osage, the son of John Henry and Mabel (Wherry) Erbe. Don moved to Cabool, Mo. with his family in 1949. On Nov. 2, 1965, he married Margaret Marsh in Cabool, Mo. Don moved to Marshfield, Mo. and worked for several years. Don and Margaret later moved to northern Iowa where he worked for various dairy farmers in the Lime Springs area until his retirement. After retirement, he moved to Riceville where he lived for many years. Don was a very friendly person and liked to visit many of the Riceville businesses and talk to people as they would come and go.

Don is survived by two sisters: Avis Kurtz and Norma (Rex) Gilmore, both of Willow Springs, Mo.; several nephews and nieces: Ian (Camille) Kurtz of Ozark, Mo., Marie (Robert) Morterud of Bayfield, Colo., John (Jolene) Erbe of Ridgeway, Jim (Diane) Erbe of New Albin, Joe Erbe of Riceville, Andrew Gilmore of Willow Springs, Mo., Kerrie (Steven) Green of Federal Way, Wash., and Mary (Eric) Cederholm of Lincoln, Calif.; and numerous grand nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Margaret; and brother: Dale.


Frank Waid, 82

CRESCO - Funeral services for Frank "Pinky" A. Waid of Cresco will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 20, 2012 at the Cresco Community Chapel in Cresco. Interment will be held in Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco and also one hour prior to services at the church.

Pinky, 82, died Friday, April 13, 2012 while visiting family in Jewell, Iowa.

Frank Alden Waid was born Sept. 15, 1929 in the Charles City Hospital, the son of Rexford Bennett Waid and Anna Helena (Wright) Waid. Pinky graduated from Charles City High School in 1948, attended Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls before entering the Air Force in December of 1948 for four years, becoming a Staff Sergeant. He was active in baseball and all sports in high school and the Air Force. Returning to Charles City in 1952, he worked for Lindemere Dairy.

On Aug. 15, 1954 he married Marian Elizabeth Barger at the First Baptist Church in Swea City. They moved to Cresco in 1959 and worked with State Farm Insurance, farming and ran Pinky's Cafe for 25 years, retiring in 2001. Pinky and Marian worked side by side in business and their marriage.

Pinky enjoyed all sports, being involved with his grandchildren, fishing and telling a good story. He was known for his potato salad and his friendly personality.

He was a member of the Gideons International. The Cresco Community Chapel began in Pinky and Marian's home in 1963.

He is survived by his three children: Donna, David (Charlene) and Danny (Karen); five grandchildren: Dusty Marie, Robert David, Jacob William, Sara Elizabeth, and Samuel Ross; and three great-grandchildren: Jayden, Damian and T.J.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian; his parents; and two sisters: Elaine Waid Carr and Peggy Waid Brinkman.


Doris Johnson, 92

NORTHWOOD - Memorial services for Doris E. Johnson of Northwood will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2012 at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood with Pastor Karen Rossing Grandall officiating. Inurnment will be held in Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be held Friday from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at the church.

Conner Colonial Chapel in Northwood is handling the arrangements.

Doris, 92, died Sunday, April 15, 2012 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Doris Eileen Johnson was born April 19, 1919 in Northwood, the daughter of Carl and Ernestine (Buth) Urdahl. She was baptized in May of that year by Reverend Fosness. In May 1932 she was confirmed in the Christian faith by Reverend J. W. Ylvisaker. She attended school at Lisbon, North Dakota, for her first two years of education. Then in 1926 the family moved back to Northwood, where she entered third grade. She graduated from Northwood High School in 1936. The following year she matriculated at St. Olaf College, where she obtained her B.A. degree in 1940, with majors in English and Latin. She taught one year in North Dakota and then returned to Iowa, where she taught in Bode, New Hampton, and Northwood for a total of 33 years.

On July 5, 1942, she married Field M. Johnson. The couple made their home in New Hampton until 1950, and their son Mark was born there. They moved to Corwith for two years and then to Northwood.

Doris has been a member of First Lutheran Church, and in early years she taught Sunday School and Bible School; she also was active in circle and FLW. At the time of her death she was still a member of Anna Circle and New Century Club.

After she retired from teaching, she took some quilting classes, enjoyed piecing quilts, pillow tops, and wall hangings, and for several years was a member of the North Iowa Quilter's Guild. She and her husband took several trips to Canada and parts of the U.S. as well as one to the Scandinavian countries. She has also been an avid reader.

Doris is survived by her son: Mark Alan Johnson and his wife Brenda Steffens Johnson of Cresco; a niece: Randi Robin of Vancouver, B.C.; sister-in-law: Ilet Johnson of Newberg, Ore.; many nieces and nephews on the Johnson side; also special grandchildren: Mandi, Ashley and Anna Fewins and their parents Wanda and Oscar Fewins of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her husband Field in 1998; her parents; and her sister: Gladys Rempel.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church or Lutheran Retirement Home.



Gerald Peter, 75

DUBUQUE - Funeral services for Gerald "Jerry" A. Peter of Dubuque were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at St. Peter Lutheran Church with Rev. Michael Stadie officiating. Interment was held in Linwood Cemetery. Military honors were accorded by the American Legion Post #6.

Family greeted friends from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 16 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service and also greeted the family from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday.

Jerry, 75, died Friday, April 13, 2012 at home surrounded by his family, after a long and courageous battle.

Gerald A. Peter was born May 16, 1936 in Cresco, the son of Fred J. and Louise (Ratz) Peter.

On Oct. 9, 1960, he married Janice E. Hovey in Cresco. He served his country with the U.S. Army.

Jerry and Janice were foster parents for five years, and were supporters of Children's International. Jerry was formerly employed as a Dubuque Firefighter and in later years was a self-employed floor tile setter.

Jerry was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, where he served as a Stephens Minister. He was also very active with the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved feeding and watching birds. He also enjoyed "watching the puppies race" at the dog track. Jerry was a devoted family man and loved his children and grandchildren.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Janice Peter of Dubuque; a daughter: Lori (Jay) Schmitt of Dubuque; three sons: Bruce (Yong Mi) Peter of White Hall, Ark., Scott Peter of Peosta, and Mark (Ann) Peter of Mount Horeb, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; and a sister: Vera Price; and a brother-in-law: Lyola McGee of Waterloo, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Viola Peter, Gladice Borseth and Marion McGee; a brother: Fred Peter Jr.; a granddaughter: Abby Peter; two brothers-in-law: Melvin Borseth and Norman Price; and a sister-in-law: Maxine Peter.

The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be given to St. Peter Lutheran Church and the American Cancer Society.


Joann DePaul, 65

CRESCO - Memorial services for Joann E. DePaul of Cresco will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Dunning Springs in Decorah.

Joann, 65, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco after being diagnosed with cancer.

Joann Elizabeth DePaul was born March 5, 1947, the daughter of Joseph and Helen DePaul in Philadelphia, Pa., where she received a Catholic education while growing up.

She later moved to New Jersey, where she met Joseph Garrison, to whom she was wed in 1972. They had one child, Melissa Joann, in 1975. They were divorced in 1977. In 1987, Joann gave birth to her second child, Dawn Marie. The two of them resided in New Jersey until 1997, when they were reunited with Melissa and moved to Iowa, where Joann dedicated her spare time to helping her daughters raise their children.

Throughout her life, Joann held various positions in hotels and nursing homes, favoring housekeeping positions. She was employed by the Cresco Super 8 for 10 years, and prior to that was employed by the Cresco Care Center.

Joann enjoyed a variety of activities, such as reading, needlepoint, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and riding her bike. Many people knew her by her bicycle, which she would often be spotted riding to various places.

Joann was a devoted friend, a loving mother, and a grandchild's dream come true.

She is survived by two daughters: Melissa and Dawn; and four grandchildren: Dakota, Dalton, Elizabeth, and Dawson.

Joann was preceded in death by her parents.


Harold Meier, 87

ELMA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Harold E. Meier of Elma was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Fr. Ray Atwood officiating. Pallbearers were: Allen Meier, Dave Kostohryz, Tony Urich, Lenny Meier, Jerry Hidding and Paul Ptacek. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery in Elma. Military rites were provided by the Elma American Legion Post #597.

Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, Aprii, 16 with a rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 6 p.m. at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma. Visitation continued at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Harold, 87, died Friday, April 13, 2012 at Colonial Manor in Elma.

Harold Ernest Meier was born Sept. 4, 1924 near Alta Vista, the son of Frank and Veronica (Kanies) Meier. He grew up on the farm and attended country school for eight years. After his schooling, Harold continued working on the farm with his dad and brothers until being drafted into the US Army during WWII. He received his basic training at Camp Walters in Texas. From there he was stationed in Italy for 11 months. Twenty-one months later he received his honorable discharge from the Army. Harold returned from the Army and began farming north of Elma.

On Nov. 5, 1955, he married Rosalie Sasarak at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. To this union a daughter, Susanne, was born. They continued to farm north of Elma until they retired and moved into Elma in 1988.

Harold enjoyed farming, John Deere tractors, Cubs baseball, playing cards, and traveling. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Elma and The Catholic Order of Foresters.

Harold is survived by his wife, Rosalie of Elma; daughter: Susanne (Douglas) Guy of Osage; grandchildren: Jeremy (Heather) Klobassa of Osage, Daniel Klobassa of Riceville, and Rachel (Cameron) Byrnes of Clear Lake; step grandchildren: Sarah (Rick) Laganiere of Grand Meadow, Minn., and Shelly Guy of Stewartville, Minn.; sisters: Agnes Hidding of Elma and Angeline Helmerick of Austin, Colo.; brother: Francis (Lois) Meier of Elma; brother-in-law: George Sasarak of Norwich, Conn.

He was preceded in death by his parents: brothers: Arnold, Walter, and Jerome; and sister: Rosella Ptacek.



Allyson Brannon, 14

RUDD - Funeral services for Allyson H. Brannon of rural Rudd were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Father Jack McClure, CPPS, officiating. Interment will be held in the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Allyson, 14, died suddenly Thursday, April 12, 2012 at Mitchell County Regional Health Center Emergency Room in Osage of natural causes.

Allyson Haley Brannon was born Aug. 14, 1997 in Cresco. She attended RRMR School in Rockford. Allyson greatly enjoyed Special Olympics, loved playing with her brother, Collin, and with their pets. Allyson also loved spending time with her family and especially enjoyed going out to eat. She enjoyed visits to her father's home where she liked driving four-wheelers and the John Deere tractor and going to fairs and the Mall of America.

Allyson is survived by her mother: Terry (Richard) Bohr of Rudd; her father: Neil Bronner of Cresco, and friend, Kenda Gullickson of Ridgeway, Wis.; her brother: Collin Bohr of Rudd; maternal grandparents: Merle and Delores Brannon of New Hampton; paternal grandparents: Robert and Margaret Bronner of Cresco; step-grandmother: Lorrena Bohr of Waucoma; maternal great-grandfather: Clem Langreck of Waucoma; aunts and uncles: Deb (Kevin) Friedman of Marble Rock, Dan Brannon and Kara of Waucoma, Steve Bronner of Chandler, Ariz., Kim (Lori) Bronner of Cresco, Gloria Bronner and Steve Koble of Clear Lake, Loren (Cheryl) Bronner of Cresco, and Paul (Rhonda) Bronner of Ridgeway.

She was preceded in death by maternal great-grandmother: Bernice Langreck; maternal great-grandparents: John and Charlene Brannon; step-grandfather: Mark Bohr; paternal great-grandparents: Claude and Bessie Bronner; and paternal great-grandparents: Gilbert and Eleanor Wilson.

Cecilia Gerleman, 101

CALMAR - A Mass of Christian Burial for Cecilia M. Gerleman of Calmar was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 23, 2012 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Organist was Jeanette Dietzenbach, soloist was Miriam Humpal along with St. Aloysius Choir. Songs sung were: "Here I am Lord", "Abba Father", "Prayer of St. Francis", "Hail Mary, Gentle Woman", and "How Great Thou Art". Lectors were Alma Meyer and Brian Corcoran and Eucharistic Ministers were Betty Pell and Edna Franke. Offertory giftbearers were Marie Kretzer, Margaret Koengsfeld, Mardell Corcoran and Phyllis Prybelski. Pallbearers were: Dale Kreitzer, Michael Franke, Kevin Gerleman, Kevin Corcoran, Michael Weigel and Adam Prybelski. Interment was held in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Calmar.

Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah handled the arrangements.

Cecilia, 101, died Friday, April 20, 2012 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah with her family at her side.

Cecilia Mary Gerleman was born April 15, 1911, on the family farm near St. Lucas, Iowa the daughter of Henry and Mary (Boeding) Kuennen. Cecilia attended St. Luke's Catholic School in St. Lucas.

On Sept. 8, 1931, she married Edmund Gerleman at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas, by her uncle Monsignor Arnold Boeding. They farmed near Calmar, until 1966 when they moved to Calmar.

She enjoyed gardening and taking care of her flower gardens, going shopping, playing bingo, traveling, crocheting and making afghans for every grandchild. Cecilia was very involved in the Calmar Senior Citizen Center and St. Aloysius Catholic Church. She always remembered birthdates of her family and friends over the years. Her door was always open to all for lunch and whenever she went someplace she would bring something to share. Cecilia learned to drive at the age of 45 and drove until she was 92. She lived at her home until the age of 95, and then went to live at the Barthell Eastern Star Home and then to the Aase Haugen Nursing Home. Cecilia enjoyed playing the harmonica, and played on her 101st birthday this past Sunday.

Beulah Schissel, 93

ELMA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Beulah C. Schissel of Elma will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Fr. Ray Atwood officiating. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery at Elma.

Visitation was held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24 with a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a 6:00 p.m. scriptural wake service at Conway-Markham Funeral Chapel in Elma. Visitation will continue at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Beulah, 93, died Sunday, April 22, 2012 at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Beulah Carol Schissel was born Aug. 23, 1918, in Frankville, Iowa the daughter of Charles and Hattie (Schoonmaker) Barrett. She attended school in Frankville. However, after her mother's death she went to live with her grandmother Dowd in Ossian, Iowa. Beulah worked for Elmer Schissel on his farm where she would meet her future husband, Ralph Schissel. They were married on Jan. 12, 1936 at St. Francis DeSalles Church in Ossian. They farmed near Castalia, Iowa until 1941 when they moved to a farm near Elma. They continued to farm in the Elma area until they retired in 1963. Beulah and Ralph then purchased an acreage south of Elma.

Beulah enjoyed cooking, baking, canning and her dog, Nicki. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, and the Rosary Society.

Beulah is survived by her daughters: Antoinette "Toni" (Jerry) Webb of Waterloo, and Janet (Arnold) Tonjes of Elma; daughter-in-law: Ruth Schissel of Waverly; her grandchildren: Della (Roger) Dirkes, Lee (Laurie) Schissel, David Tonjes, Karla (Lary) Franken and Heidi (Galan) Kramer; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph on October 25, 1992; her son: Rod Schissel; her grandson: Steve Schissel; her parents; her brother: Morvin Barrett; and sister: Goldie Peck.

Memorials may be directed to the family.



Bernice Schmauss, 95

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Bernice J. Schmauss of Cresco was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Father Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco with a scripture wake service following. Visitation continued one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Bernice, 95, died Friday, April 20, 2012 at the Cresco Care Center.

Bernice J. Schmauss was born Sept. 11, 1916, on the family farm in Howard County the daughter of William and Evelyn (Hunt) O'Brien.

On June 15, 1938, she married Francis Schmauss at Assumption Catholic Church. They made their home on a farm in the Cresco and Lime Springs areas for 35 years. They retired and moved into Cresco in 1973.

She was a member of the Assumption Church and belonged to the St. Cecelia's Rosary Society. Bernice enjoyed sewing, gardening, and followed high school wrestling and football games.

Bernice is survived by her children: Connie (Robert) Whitinger of Ankeny, Richard of Cresco, Nancy (Maurice) Meyers of Rochester, Minn., Michael (Mary) of Denver, Iowa, Carol (Michael) Stokes of Chatfield, Minn., John (Nancy) of Cresco, and Alan of Cresco; her daughter-in-law: Helen of Cresco; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; and her sisters: Frances Schwickerath of Cedar Falls and Elizabeth (Dewayne) Kruger of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her husband Francis; son: Merlin; her parents; her sisters: Myrtle Walter, Marguerite Schoeberl, and Cecelia Richardson; and her brothers: William and Edward O'Brien.
