RICEVILLE - Funeral services for James T. Cody of Riceville were held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville. Interment was in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in rural Riceville with military honors by Roy Gue Post 244.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville handled the arrangements.

James, 79, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

James T. Cody was born July 18, 1931 at Cylinder, Iowa, the son of John and Theresa (Mansager) Cody.

Larry Deutschle, 69

FAIRFIELD - Funeral services for Larry L. Deutschle of Fairfield were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011 at the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont, Iowa with the Rev. Sharon Benelle offficiating. Interment was in Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.

Visitation was held Monday, Jan. 10 from 1 until 7 p.m. with family present from 5-7 p.m.

Fremont Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements.

Larry, 69, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011 at his home surrounded by his children.


Larry L. Deutschle was born June 11, 1941, the son of Loraine and Margaret (Williams) Deutschle in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He graduated from Fremont High School with the class of 1960.

In 1961, he married Maryellen Benell. They later divorced. He was married to Janice Kuntz Dugger on Oct. 20, 1985 in Fairfield.

He was a member of the Fremont United Methodist Church, and a former member of the Packwood Lions. He worked at Sutherlands in Ottumwa, Kaiser in Hedrick, the Packwood Elevator, Wakes Feed in Packwood, and WLD Trucking of Fairfield until his retirement in 2008. He loved all cars (especially old cars) and John Deere tractors.

Larry is survived by his wife, Janice; daughters: Tami (Doug) Doak of University Park and Tina (Deb) Deutschle of Columbia, Mo.; sons: Tony (Cheryl) Deutschle of Hedrick and Todd (Misti) Deutschle of Agency; step-daughters: Tammy Dugger of Tremont, Ill. and Diane (Guy) Mitchell of Brighton; sister: Nita (Ken) Hackman of Cresco; 23 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

William Gosch, 48

CRESCO - Funeral services for William "Bill" Gosch of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 10, 2011 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco. It was Bill's wishes to be cremated following services.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Bill, 48, died Thursday morning, Jan. 6 after a courageous battle with cancer at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

William Gosch was born May 23, 1962 in Guttenburg, Iowa the son of John and Patricia (Herold) Gosch. He graduated from Crestwood High School in 1981. Bill's dream was to work with his father in the family business at Gosch's Plumbing and Heating. He attended Dunwoody Technical Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. where he studied and mastered sheet metal fabrication.


On July 16, 1988 he married Barbara Butikofer at First Lutheran Church in Cresco. They made their home in Cresco. Along with his brother David, he purchased Gosch's Plumbing and Heating in 2004.

Bill's number one priority in life was his family. His favorite thing to do was take his family up to Round Bay Resort to go fishing for Northern Pike. His second love in life was the Minnesota Vikings. He also enjoyed NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt Sr. and "Little E." He enjoyed camping, hunting, sitting around campfires with friends, grilling, and cheering on the Cadets. His passion for life was shown through his hard work ethic, willingness to help others, positive attitude and warm smile.

Bill is survived by his wife Barb; three sons: Brandon (Rebecca), Benjamin and Brian; three grandchildren: Lexy, Bradan, and Bella; his parents; three sisters: Barb (Darren), Diane (Randi) Arndt, Deb (Chad) Duregger; two brothers: Dave (Daniell) Gosch and Joe (Kelli) Gosch; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bill was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents: Orvie and Fran Herold; and his paternal grandparents: John and Hertha Gosch.

Roman Moravetz, 90

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Roman J. Moravetz of rural Cresco was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 31, 2010 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. Nick March officiating. The lector was Margaret Hruska, the organist was Sue Panos and the singers were David and Renee Voves. Pallbearers were David Voves, Renee Voves, Brian Voves, Wayne Mlady, Mike Mrachek and Linda Voves. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin.

Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Roman, 90, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2010 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.

Roman Joseph Moravetz was born Feb. 27, 1920 near Schley, the son of Joseph and Caroline (Svestka) Moravetz. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith in the Holy Trinity Church at Protivin. Roman attended the rural school in his neighborhood.


Roman was a quiet person who enjoyed the farm and with the exception of serving in the Army during WWII, stayed on the family farm. In the fifties he and his brothers would overhaul cars and tractors while in the sixties, it was only tractors and machinery. On occasion he would be called to the Schley Cheese Factory to repair or weld some equipment that had broken down. He was handy with making something work before replacing with new.

Roman is survived by nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Otilda Larkin, Leona Havel and Clara M. Voves; and three brothers: Reuben, Clarence and Leonard.

Thomas Dvorak, 80

CRESCO - Funeral services for Tom Dvorak of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Tom, 80, died at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Thomas Junior Dvorak was born May 24, 1930 the son of Lewis and Mary (Gerber) Dvorak in Cresco. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. He attended grade school in Cresco, and graduated from Cresco High School in 1948. Following graduation from high school, Tom worked at Bents Nursery and Diamond Brothers Grocery until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict in 1951. He graduated from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and from there, went to Bayonne, New Jersey where he attended service training school for the position of store keeper. From there he went to Sasebo, Japan where he boarded his ship, the U.S.S. Hitchiti. They patrolled several islands in the Pacific‚ serving one year in Alaska (Aleutian Islands) and one year in Hawaii (Oahu-Pearl Harbor), and other island locations. Tom received his Honorable Discharge in December 1954.


After returning home from service, he worked for the Skelley Oil Company, and in 1957 began work in the Howard County Engineering Department, a position he held for 37 years, doing surveying, road design, inspections, and office management. He obtained his training from Iowa State University in Ames and in Mason City that specialized in road and bridge repair and construction. He was office manager for several years before retiring in 1992.

On July 22, 1956 he married Ethel Bigalk at the Freemont Lutheran Church in rural Cresco. They lived in Cresco.

Tom was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post 135. He enjoyed, fishing, gardening, shrubs and flowers, and most importantly was spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved to attend their school and church activities, and was his top priority.

Tom taught Sunday School and served as superintendent for 25 years, was a member of the Brotherhood and their bowling team for several years. He also served on many church committees.

He is survived by his daughter: Brenda Mark of Cedar Falls and her family, Gina (Mark) Arends, Noah, Blake, Jace, and Alexis, all of Cedar Falls, and Sara Mark and her son Wyatt, of Cedar Rapids, a son-in-law: Kevin Wedeking, Kourtny and Kassandra Wedeking of Charles City; a son: Barry (Chris) of Cedar Falls and his family, Anna and Abigail of Cedar Falls; brothers-in-law: Arlin and Dean Bigalk of Cresco; along with many nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter: Sherry Wedeking; his parents; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Doris (Bigalk) and Tom Doughty; a nephew: Dan Doughty; and brother-in-laws: Wayne and William Bigalk.

Mildred Kach, 89

CRESCO - Funeral services for Mildred E. Kach of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011 at Notre Dame Church in Cresco. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Friends were invited to call from 10 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the church.

Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Mildred, 89, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2011 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco of natural causes.


Mildred Emma Kach was born in Howard County, Iowa the daughter of Frank and Anna (Lickteig) Baker. As a young girl she attended school in the New Oregon Township. Millie was baptized and confirmed in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco. She attended school until the eighth grade and worked at home on the farm.

On Jan. 30, 1940, she married LuVerne Kach at the Assumption Parsonage. They moved often around Northeast Iowa and Southern Minnesota while LuVerne worked for the railroad. They moved to Lime Springs, Iowa where they made their home for 26 years. She worked for many people in their homes. In 1985, they moved to Cresco upon Vern's retirement.

Millie enjoyed the outdoors in her younger years gardening and planting flowers. Fishing was her second love with her best friend LuElla. One day she caught 100 bullheads in two and one half hours. One of her favorite companions of 16 years was her dog, Ginger.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Millie was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers: Jerome and Gilbert Baker; and two sisters: Gladys Burgess and Elvira Barnes.

Christine Hvitved, 92

WAVERLY - Chapel services for Christine J. Hvitved of Waverly will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011 at Good Shepherd Chapel at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly. Inurnment will be held in Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua at a later date.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco is handling the arrangements.

Christine, 92, died Thursday morning, Jan. 20, 2011 at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly where she has been living the past eight years.

Christine Josephine Haag was born Nov. 28, 1918, at home in Nashua, Iowa, the daughter of John Batiste and Elizabeth (Felton) Haag. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1936 and worked at the Charles Theater in Charles City where she met her husband, Niels. They were married Jan. 5, 1942, and moved to Baltimore, Md., during which time Chris was employed by Sears. Following Niels' discharge from the Navy, the couple returned to Nashua and joined the family hardware business. Niels and Chris bought the business in 1951 and they later built a new Gamble's Store. Chris was an equal partner in the business and worked every day at the store while maintaining a home and raising their family.


She enjoyed her family and many outdoor activities including boating and water skiing on Cedar Lake, bird watching, golfing, and vacationing at the family cabin in Minnesota. Chris was also known for her ceramic work and talent as a seamstress. Chris was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church and shared her love of music by singing in the choir.

Christine is survived by her daughter: Sandra (Tom) Kolodziej of Nashua; a son: Linn (Connie) Hvitved of Cresco; two grandchildren: Angela (Damian Dalle Nogare) of Bethesda, Md. and Aaron (Missy) of Cresco; two great-granddaughters: Maryn and Brynlie Hvitved of Cresco; and two sisters: Garland (Don) Jensen of Charles City and Marian Hannemann of Nashua.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2005; her parents; and three sisters: Margaret Ransom, Susie Monroe and Mary Jean Haag.

Mayme Vopava, 103

OSSIAN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Mayme Vopava was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. The lector was John Wiest, the organist was Doris Thompson, cantor was Dan Silhacek and flutist was Natalie Busta. St. Wenceslaus choir sang "Here I am Lord", "Amazing Grace", "Be Not Afraid", "Goin Home" and "How Great Thou Art". Eucharistic ministers were Ken and Mary Schissel and offertory giftbearers were Carrie, Sarah and Sue Busta. Pallbearers were Steve Busta, Jim Busta, Dale Hovden, Scott Balik, Dave Dvorak and Matthew Busta. Interment was in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in Protivin.

Balik Funeral Home in Spillville handled the arrangements.

Mayme, 103, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian where she has made her home since August 2004.

Mayme Rose Vopava was born Nov. 15, 1907, the daughter of Frank J. and Mary Ann (Klima) Dvorak in Spillville. Mayme attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in Spillville. She met Edwin Vopava at a dance at the Inwood Ballroom and they were married in a double wedding ceremony with her older sister, Mable and Glen Hovden on Nov. 13, 1929. Mayme farmed with her husband until he passed away on July 21, 1955, from a heart attack. After that, Mayme sold the farm and moved into Spillville and lived with her mother. She then worked at the Spillville Post Office from 1956-1973.


Mayme enjoyed doing crafts, fishing and dancing. Mayme was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.

Mayme is survived by her sister: Lorraine Busta of Protivin; along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Edwin Vopava in 1955; her parents: Frank and Mary Ann Dvorak; her sister: Mabel (Glen) Hovden; three brothers: Leonard (Genevieve) Dvorak, Clarence (Irene) Dvorak and Julius (Jane) Dvorak; and one brother-in-law: Ben Busta.
