HARMONY, MN - Funeral services for Bertha F. Smedsrud of Harmony, Minn. will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012 at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony. Interment will be in Elliota Cemetery in rural Canton, Minn.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church.

Lindstrom Funeral Home is handlng the arrangements.

Bertha, 89, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011.


Bertha Frances Smedsrud was born on May 27, 1922 in Rice Lake, Wis., the daughter of Palmar and Ada Klingsheim.


Arlene Merrick, 97

CRESCO - Funeral services for Arlene R. Merrick of Cresco were held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco. Interment will be Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

A rosary was recited at 11:30 a.m. and the family greeted friends from noon until 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Arlene, 97, died peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011 at the Patty Elwood Center.

Arlene Rosalia Merrick was born Sept. 4, 1914 on the Barnes family farm north of Lawler. She was the second youngest of nine children born to Andrew and Mary (Hand) Barnes. She walked across the field with her brothers and sisters to attend country school once taught by her older sister, Evelyn. She graduated from New Hampton High School and then earned her normal training certificate. Arlene taught rural schools in Chickasaw and Howard counties for many years and continued her education at Luther College.


On June 10, 1939, she married Victor Anthony Merrick of Elma in Webster City, Iowa. They had a trucking business in Cresco for many years. Arlene's love of education inspired her daughter to also become a teacher. During her retirement she enjoyed visiting with friends on the telephone, keeping in touch with current news and issues, and listening to big band music. She loved and appreciated her home and the simple things in life. Arlene lived very happily there until she was ninety-two with the help of her daughter, various elder care agencies, and special care givers Carol Melver and Jo Ann Martinek. Arlene moved to the Cresco Care Center in 2006 and enjoyed the many musical performances given to the residents. In 2007 she moved to the Patty Elwood Center.

Arlene is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Anne Kjos and son-in-law, Carlton Kjos of Decorah; and two nieces: Elizabeth and Martha Barnes of Lexington, Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: George, Alvin, Donald, and Charles; sisters: Ethyl Flynn, Evelyn Barnes, Gertrude Vinton, and Florence Franke.

Memorials may be given to the Patty Elwood Center, 21668 80th St. Cresco, Iowa.


Mary Dreckman, 71

NEW HAMPTON - A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary S. Dreckman of New Hampton was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012 at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph's Center in New Hampton with Father Mark Osterhaus officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton.

Visitation was held 3 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 2 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton. Visitation was also held one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.

Mary, 71, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011 at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City surrounded by her family.

Mary Suzanne Dreckman was born May 11, 1940, at Mission, Texas, the daughter of Joseph Edward and Sophia Rosella (Nathem) Nosbisch Sr. She was baptized at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Mission. At a very young age the family returned to the North Washington area. She attended and graduated from St. Mary's School in North Washington in May of 1958. Mary received her First Holy Communion on May 11, 1947 and was confirmed in April of 1956.


On Nov. 22, 1958, she married Robert Dean Dreckman of rural Lawler at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington. They lived in Jacksonville Township in rural Lawler until moving to their present home in New Hampton on Feb. 14, 1978.

Mary was a homemaker while her children were growing up. She was a Cub Scout den mother and a Junior Girl Scout leader for many years. She also volunteered at Head Start in Nashua for two years while her daughter, Stacie was a student there. In later years, Mary worked at Hardees, Kolby's Dine and Stein, New Hampton Care Center and retired from Kwik Star in June of 2000. Mary and Robert became parents of six sons and five daughters. Mary enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, bowling and games with her grandchildren. She loved to cook, bake, especially trying new recipes, canning the family's garden produce and working in the flower gardens.

Her hobby was collecting cookbooks and recipes. She enjoyed many special times spent with her children and their sporting activities throughout the years. In later years she dearly loved the times spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary and her husband loved to listen to old time music and enjoyed going to polka fests and dances just to listen to the music and visit with friends.

Survivors include her husband Robert of New Hampton; her children: Robert Dreckman, Jr. of New Hampton, Roger (Carla) Dreckman of Lawler, Richard (Mary) Dreckman of Waukon, Susan (Henry) Straight of Arthur, Russell (Pat) Dreckman of New Hampton, Raymond Dreckman of Protivin, Sharon (Richard) Zeien of New Hampton, Shirley (Chris) Brinkman of Manly, Ronald (Rhonda) Dreckman of New Hampton, Sara (Chris) Onken of New Hampton and Stacie Dreckman of New Hampton; 34 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Elizabeth Nosbisch of Des Moines and Beverly Goebel of Reinbeck; one brother: Thomas (JoLene) Nosbisch of Des Moines; two sisters-in-law: Helen Nosbisch of Waterloo and Earlene Nosbisch of Reinbeck; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by a grandson: Jeffrey Robert Dreckman; her parents: Joseph Nosbisch Sr. on June 27, 1973 and Sophia Nosbisch on February 3, 1983: brothers: Robert Nosbisch, William Nosbisch, Richard "Tiny" Nosbisch and her twin brother, Joseph Nosbisch Jr.; in-laws: Walter and Sylvia Dreckman; and brother-in-law: Raynold Goebel.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Lawrence "Larry" C. Gunderson of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Larry, 80, died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at Winneshiek Medical Center Hospice in Decorah surrounded by his family.

Lawrence Caroll Gunderson was born Jan. 4, 1931, in Austin, Minn., the son of Lawrence T. and Clara (Hoseth) Gunderson. He attended grade and middle school in Austin until eighth grade. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1949. He was a Spartan letterman in football, baseball and basketball.


He served aboard the USS Deuel APA 160 as a Classified Store Keeper in the US Navy for four years. He was fortunate to be able to travel to Japan, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean ports.

After returning to the states, he married Marlys Ann Hoppie on Oct. 25, 1958. To this union four daughters were born, Tammi, Vicki, Cindi, and Terri. They later were divorced.

Larry, also known as Gundy, Sonny, Junior, LC, Grandpa Gunder, and Fearless worked at Cresco Machine all his life until he retired. He traveled Northeast Iowa, Southeast Minnesota and called upon numerous small automotive and mechanic business owners which he became longtime friends with.

Early in his adult life he had the opportunity to be sponsored as a professional bowler. He declined this opportunity in order to stay home, run the family business, and raise his four daughters. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, walking, and bike riding, and stopping in local business establishments to visit. He enjoyed playing cribbage, cards and dominoes with his mom while she was a resident at the Evans Memorial Home. He was also a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Cresco. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-children.

He is survived by his four daughters: Tammi (Arlyn) Skoda of Cresco, Vicki (David) Disney of Urbandale, Cindi, (fiance Jeff Kath) Grover of Cresco, and Terri (Craig) Cotant of Cresco; 12 grandchildren: Adam (Jessica), Amanda (Erik), Amelia (Damian); Joel (Samantha), Jeff and Elizabeth; Brandon (Jill) and Samantha; Jenn, Andy, Emma, and Ty; six great-grandchildren: Aidan, Awnan, DJ, Kassidy, Lydia, and Wyland; one sister: Rheta Wilson; one uncle: Robert Gunderson; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Larry was preceded in death by one great-grandson: Aries Minter; his father; mother; two brothers; and aunts and uncles.


Matilda Milz, 86

CRESCO - Funeral services for Matilda M. Milz of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco.

Visitation was held 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 1 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. The American Legion Auxiliary held a service at 3:00 p.m. and scripture wake service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation was also held one hour before services at the church on Monday.

Matilda, 86, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011 at the Cresco Care Center.

Matilda M. Milz was born Aug. 11, 1925, in Protivin, the daughter of Joseph and Martha (Strnad) Pecinovsky. She attended grade school at Rudolphinum in Protivin. After the eighth grade Mathilda began working as a hired girl taking care of mothers and babies until her marriage.

On Feb. 11, 1946 she married Charles Milz at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. He preceded her in death on Oct. 25, 2004.

Mathilda enjoyed spending time making crafts, attending craft shows, and baking. She always had a good time playing cards, bingo, and trying her luck at casinos. Mathilda was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Regional Health Services Auxiliary, Howard Residential Care Facility Auxiliary, Farm Bureau, and liked to help at her church. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church since her marriage and now Notre Dame Catholic Church. Later in her life Mathilda enjoyed traveling overseas twice, traveling with friends, and taking day trips. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mathilda is survived by her daughter: Donna (Duayne) Bothun of Birchwood, Wis., and their children Kimberly (Jeremy) and Kristina (Mark); her son: Tom (Pat) of Stewartville, Minn. and their children, Steve (Erin) and Scott (Erin); and her daughter: Elaine Mayo (Larry Bergmann) of Lawler and her children, Shelley (Matt) and Sherry (Jose); 16 great-grandchildren; her brother: Jerry Pecinovsky of Des Moines; her sisters: Delores (Ray) Schmitt of Winona, Minn. and Judy Busta of Protivin; two sisters-in-law: Katherine and Luella; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Richard and Don; and a sister: Elsie Schoeberl.

A Mathilda Milz Memorial Fund has been established.

Merle McGrane, 70

ELMA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Merle J. McGrane of Elma were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Father Ray Atwood officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Elma.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9 with a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a 6:00 p.m. scriptural wake service at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma. Visitation will continue at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Merle, 70, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. surrounded by his family.

Merle Joseph McGrane was born Aug. 14, 1941 in Elma, the son of Edward and Evelyn (Quirk) McGrane. Merle graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in 1959. After graduating he worked for the Howard County Highway Department on highway maintenance, and the Howard County Secondary Road Crew.

On Oct. 26, 1968 he married Gladys Meyer at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Hampton. The couple made their home in New Hampton and later moved to their present home in Elma. Merle worked for Hansen Furniture in New Hampton for six years and helped Ed Conway at the funeral home. He was employed at Kitchens of Sara Lee for 17 years until his retirement in 1989. Merle enjoyed fishing, turtle fishing, dancing, sports, classic cars, yard work, fish frys, eating out, his family,and visiting with friends. Merle had a great sense of humor and was the life of the party. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Elma.

Merle is survived by his wife, Gladys of Elma; his children: Jason McGrane of Plymouth, Minn. and Brenda McGrane of Urbandale; his brothers: Jim and LaVern "Mac" McGrane, both of Elma.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister-in-law: Donna McGrane.

DES MOINES - Hazel Markovetz, 95, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012 at Calvin Community. A private family burial will be held at a later date at the New Oregon Cemetery in Cresco.

Hazel Markoetz was born Aug. 11, 1916, the daughter of Archie and Borgine Hoyt. She was a member of the Westkirk Presbyterian Church. In 1985, she retired from the Des Moines Public School System as an elementary school teacher.

Hazel is survived by her daughter: Carol Dixon; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Markovetz; and a son: Alton Markovetz.

Corrine Arnold, 84

CRESCO - Corrine Arnold, 84, died on January 15, 2012 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012 at the Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, with a Scripture Service to follow, at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home 404 North Elm St. in Cresco. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

The oldest of 11 children, Corrine was born on March 24, 1927 in Cresco to Charley and Ida (Wenthold) Burgess. She attended Orleans #3 Grade School, a rural school west of Cresco. After graduating from Cresco High School in 1944 she served as a Howard County Deputy Recorder for three years and then went to work at the Cresco State Bank.

Corrine and Dale Arnold were united in marriage on June 8, 1950 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cresco. After they started a family, she stayed home to care for their two children. In 1965 she began working at St. Joseph’s/Notre Dame Grade School as the school’s secretary. In her 25 years in the position, the staff appreciated her for her organizational skills and she proudly admitted the children who would find an excuse to “visit” her in the office. After retiring, she helped Dale manage Dale’s Tours, which took trips to various casinos.

Over the years Corrine remained active in her church by preparing the bulletin, serving as lay minister and being a part of the ladies’ groups. She was an avid seamstress who also canned food, crocheted, embroidered, quilted, crafted, led scout groups and kept organized genealogy records of her family. She also belonged to the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary. Dale and she enjoyed traveling, square dancing, bowling, playing cards and Bingo. She could often be found baking for neighbors, friends and church or school groups.

Corrine lost her devoted husband in 2008 while she was battling the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. She was also preceded in death by her parents and five sisters: Alta Jean Burgess in infancy, Alice May Whalen, Rosie Ott, Helen Hovden and Charlene Hageman.

Corrine is survived by her children: Karen Gonzalez, and Kevin (Ann) Arnold, all of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren: Marta (Thierry) Torregrossa, Juan Carlos Gonzalez, Susan (Scott) Chutka, Michael and Matthew Arnold; two great grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Dorothy McGee of Des Moines, Iowa, Emma Jean (Martin) Koudelka, Kenny (Donna) Burgess, Charles (Georgie) Burgess all of Cresco, and Charlotte Sorenson of Decorah, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Notre Dame School.


Russell Lukes, 71

PROTIVIN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Russell L. Lukes of Protivin will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. Marvin Salz and Rev. Nick March officiating. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin.

Friends may greet the family 3-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at Hugeback's Protivin Funeral Home in Protivin where there will be a 3:30 p.m. rosary. Visitation continues 8:30-10 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Russell, 71, died Sunday morning, Jan. 15, 2012 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco of natural causes.

Russell Leonard Lukes was born March 4, 1940, on the Lukes family farm in Winneshiek County, the oldest son of Leonard and Bernadine (Kalishek) Lukes. He received his education from the Holy Trinity Grade School and Rudolphinum High School.

On October 25, 1960, he married Agnes Marie Martinek at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Russell spent his life enjoying and working on the family farm with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Slovak. Russell enjoyed being a part of the South Winn Country Club and was known for his love of socializing. He was also a regular Czech Days Chauffeur. He enjoyed playing cards, attending the sale barn, bowling, watching old westerns, auto-racing and sports, especially the Chicago Bears and Iowa Hawkeyes. There was nothing more relaxing to him, than listening to his morning radio and his evening bowl of ice cream. His grandchildren will always remember their rides with Grandpa on the Ranger.

Russell is survived by his wife of 51 years, Agnes; seven children: Julie Schwade (Al Bagby) of Cresco, Lori Lukes (Dean Graven) of Mason City, Keith (Connie) Lukes of Protivin, Lynn (Rodney) Franzen of Ossian, Greg (Lori) Lukes of Protivin, Randy (Dawn) Lukes of Protivin, Carla Lukes (Paul Johnson) of Decorah; 11 grandchildren: Matthew, Jamie, Kayla and Tyler Schwade, Megan Lukes, Lucas Feltz, Jackson, Levi and Karstyn Lukes, Jordan and Ryan Lukes; one brother: Ron Lukes (Judy Bartlett) of Decorah; two sisters: Jan (Gary) Johnson of Spillville and Shirley (John) Svenson of Webster City; two aunts: Grace (Max) Slifka of Cresco and Florence Lukes of Cedar Rapids; surviving in-laws: Sr. Annette Martinek, Bill (Barb) Martinek, Geri Kerian, John (Sara) Martinek, Chuck (Mary) Martinek, Joe Martinek, Mary (Gabe) Klimesh and Theresa (Mike) Lensing.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard on Jan. 7, 2010 and his mother, Bernadine on January 13, 2012; his in-laws: Adella and John F. Martinek; sister: Diane Cress; brother-in-law: Bernie Kerian; and sister-in-law: Pat Martinek.


Bernadine Lukes, 91

PROTIVIN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Bernadine M. Lukes of Protivin was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, 2012 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating. Her children placed the pall on the casket. Lectors were Alyson Kramer, Angie Cress and Amanda Balik. Organist was Marlene Pecinovsky and the vocalist was Laura Lukes. The offertory gifts were presented by Megan Lukes, Alexis Kirchert, Kayla Schwade and Abigail Riley. Pallbearers were Keith Lukes, Greg Lukes, Randy Lukes, Dana Svenson, Matt Cress and Matt Scwade. Interment was in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin. Honorary pallbearers were Julie Schwade, Lori Lukes, Lynn Franzen, Carla Lukes, Dawn Kirchert, Andrea Riley, Amanda Balik, Alyson Kramer, Leah Larson and Angie Cress.

Friends were to call 3-7 p.m. Sunday at Hugeback's Protivin Funeral Home in Protivin where there was a 4 p.m. rosary and a 6 p.m. scripture service. Visitation continued 8:30-10 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Bernadine, 91, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2012 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Bernadine Marie Lukes was born Jan. 14, 1920, on the Kalishek family farm near Protivin in rural Winneshiek County, the daughter of Louis and Emma (Pechota) Kalishek. She received her education in Protivin.
On October 6, 1937, she married Leonard Lukes at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. The couple farmed southeast of Protivin for 32 years until 1969 when they moved into the town of Protivin.

Bernadine loved her time on the farm raising the children, caring for the home and being a farm wife. She loved to spend time in her garden and canning. She and Leonard enjoyed playing cards and fishing together. Leonard died on January 7, 2010, at the age of 93. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Rosary Society.

Survivors include two sons: Russell (Agnes) Lukes of Protivin and Ron Lukes (Judy Bartlett) of Decorah; two daughters: Janice (Gary) Johnson of Spillville and Shirley (John) Svenson of Webster City; a son-in-law: Dave Cress of Minneapolis; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Grace (Max) Slifka of Cresco and Florence Lukes of Robbins, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter: Diane Cress; her parents; and one sister: Ursula Wagner.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Ruth G. Gesell of Cresco were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Friends were to call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour prior to services at the church.

Ruth, 88, died Sunday evening, Jan. 15, 2012 at the Cresco Care Center.

Ruth Genevieve Gesell was born May 11, 1923, in Winneshiek County, Iowa, the only child of Roland and Emma (Smith) Burr. Ruth attended rural school in Winneshiek County and graduated from Cresco High School in 1940. Following graduation, she taught in a rural Winneshiek County school for two years.

On Aug. 30, 1942, she married Marvin Gesell at Immanuel Lutheran Church parsonage in Cresco.

They farmed on his family farm until Marvin passed away. She was involved with her children's 4-H projects as well as in the Howard County Farm Bureau women's club. Later, Ruth retired to Cresco and enjoyed spending her time embroidering, container flower gardening and collecting cat figurines. In 2010 she moved to the Cresco Care Center where she enjoyed being with old and new friends and participating in their activities. This past fall she was in her glory helping plan the new flower garden there.

Ruth is survived by her four children: Geraldine Otto of Lime Springs, Marjorie (Orin) Johnson of Cresco, Paul of West Des Moines and Dale (Karen) of Ridgeway; eight grandchildren: Barbara Traugh, Beverly Vote, Bradley Otto, Brian Otto, Steven Johnson, Amber Seaton, Corey Gesell, and Joshua Gesell; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law: Viola Gesell of Cresco.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983; her parents; son-in-law: Marlin Otto; in-laws: Alfred and Ellen Gesell; and brother-in-law: Elmer Gesell.

A Ruth Gesell Memorial Fund has been established.


Earl Grace, 88

RICEVILLE - Funeral services for Earl R. Grace, formerly of Riceville will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012 at the McIntire United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Wayne Cemetery, rural McIntire with military honors by American Legion Roy Gue Post 244.

Friends were to call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church.

Earl, 88, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2012 at the Riceville Family Care and Therapy Center.



Wilma Vsetecka, 87

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Wilma M. Vsetecka of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Father Daniel Knipper officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, with a Scripture Service to follow at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Wilma, 87, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2012 at her home.

Wilma Mary Vsetecka was born April 16, 1924, the oldest daughter of Ben and Lilllian (Voyek) Vsetecka on the family farm in Winneshiek County. She attended country school and then parochial school in Protivin.

On June 2, 1947, she married Cletus L. Vsetecka at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They farmed near Ridgeway until 1988 when Cletus passed away. Shortly after Wilma moved to Cresco. Wilma started working for Pizza Hut at the age of 65 and retired after 20 years.

She enjoyed reading, genealogy, making pies, her garden, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Wilma is survived by four daughters: Jan (Doug) Baker of Lansboro, Minn., Patricia (Steve) Elsbernd of Ridgeway, Elaine (Walter Hopeman) Vsetecka of Lime Springs, and Lisa (Darryl) Langreck of Ossian; grandchildren: Chris Malek, Jennifer (Brian) Huinker, Cole Baker, Darla Elsbernd, Anne (Scott) Wilson, Jay, Katie, and Erin Elsbernd, Kendra, Nicole, Anna, and Kelly Langreck; great-grandson: Anthony Malek; sisters: Norma Stone of Sparks, Nev. and Delores (Raphel) Vsetecka of Cresco; sisters-in-law: Marcella Vsetecka of Decorah and Phyllis Vsetecka of Lawler; and brother-in-law: Alvin (Pat) Vsetecka of Lawler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cletus; son: Dale; her parents: Ben and Lillian; in-laws: Frank and Annastasia Vsetecka; brothers: Lester and Alvis; brothers-in-law: James Vsetecka and Frank Vsetecka; sisters-in-law: Elsie Chihak, Margaret Panos, and Gertrude Vsetecka; and step-grandson: Kyle Baker.

A Wilma Vsetecka Memorial Fund has been established.



Phyllis McCabe, 89

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Phyllis I. McCabe of Cresco was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29 with a Scripture Service to follow at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco. Visitation continued for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Phyllis, 89, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco where she has been a resident for the past six years.

Phyllis Irene McCabe was born Sept. 17, 1922, the daughter of Phillip and Louise (Krueger) DeGreve. She grew up on a farm north of Cresco near Granger. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1939.

On Dec. 27, 1943, she married J. Flynn McCabe. They farmed near Lime Springs until 1973 when Flynn died. She moved to Cresco and worked at the creamery for several years and then worked for the Community Action Agency in Decorah until she retired in 1988. For the next several years she did volunteer work with the meals site operated by the Area One Agency on Aging.

She was a longtime member of St. Joseph's and Notre Dame parishes. Phyllis was a lover of dance band music and really enjoyed the sessions at the Care Center when "Tim the Music Man" played those old times tunes. She was a loving mother.

She is survived by three children: Phillip (Melinda) of Grand Rapids, Mich., James (Pam) of Spring Valley, Minn. and Karen Reitz (Robert) of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren: Aaron McCabe, Ashley McCabe, Megan McCabe Moore (Dominic) and Colin McCabe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Flynn; her parents; four sisters: Elsie Huntington, Genevieve Sjobakken, Malinda Peterson and Alice Stevenson; and two brothers: Sterling Huntington and Elmer DeGreve who died in infancy.

Memorials may be sent to the church or the recreation fund at the Care Center.

HARMONY, MN - A memorial service for Lois M. Alfson of Harmony, Minn. will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012 at the Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony. Interment will be in Greenfield Cemetery in Harmony.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church.

Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Lois, 83, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 at the Stewartville Care Center in Stewartville, Minn.

Lois M. Alfson was born on Feb. 19, 1928 in Harmony, Minn., the daughter of Tracy and Mabel Yeoman.


William Hron, 74

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for William W. Hron of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Father Daniel Knipper officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. The American Legion Post #135 will accord military rites.

William, 74, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

William W. Hron was born Sept. 26, 1937 on the family farm southwest of Schley, the son of Vincent and Rose (Pisny) Hron. He helped farm and attended school until the 11th grade when he enlisted into the United States Army on Jan. 5, 1956. William was a SP4 truck driver for the Armored Car Company. On Dec. 18, 1958 he was honorably discharged in Fort Benning, Ga.

William married Marlene Pecinovsky at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin in 1963, they later divorced. Throughout William's life he worked construction, was a heavy machine operator and transmission mechanic.

He loved taking a stroll in the woods, hunting and sitting on a riverbank fishing. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

William is survived by his children: Dean (Christy) of Cresco, Dale of Oceanside, Calif., Debbie (Gary) Jensen of Cresco, Dona (Steve) Iverson of Cresco, Kraig of Oelwein, Kenny (Beth) of Ankeny and Dennis of Cresco; his grandchildren: Brandon, Cassandra, and Benjamen Hron, Jacob and Adam Jensen, Eric and Alan Iverson, Hannah, Caeleb and Ella Hron, and Amber Hron; his sisters: Marie Sebastian, Helen Hron and Evelyn Andresen all of Cresco, and twin sister: Wilma (Dick) Makinster of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Joseph in infancy, and James; brothers-in-law: Don Sebastian, Gerald Courtney and Thomas Andresen; his nephews: Wayne Sebastian and Danny Courtney.

Memorials may be given to Evans Memorial Home or a charity of choice.

Arthur Prinz, 84

LIME SPRINGS - Funeral services for Arthur Prinz of Lime Springs were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lime Springs. Interment will take place at a later date in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.

Visitation was held from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church.

Lindstrom Funeral Home of Lime Springs handled the arrangements.

Arthur, 84, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012 at the Riceville Family Care and Therapy Center in Riceville.

Arthur Carl Fred Prinz was born May 31, 1927, in rural Maple Leaf, Iowa, the son of Otto and Etha (Matthias) Prinz. Arthur was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Maple Leaf. He attended rural schools there. He farmed the family farm.

In March of 1955, he married Geneva Roesler. They were later divorced.

Arthur was drafted into the United States Army as a private in January of 1955. He was honorably discharged with a rank of private first class in December of 1956. Arthur continued farming following his discharge in 1956 and retired at the age of 66 after 46 years.

He is survived by one sister: Velma Kutzbach of Elma; his former wife: Geneva Prinz of Lime Springs; 12 nieces and nephews; nine great-nieces and nephews; and six great-great nieces and nephews.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents: Otto and Etha; and one sister: Verona Bartels
