Edith Solomon

Funeral services for Edith Solomon of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 6 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco with Rev. Todd Yeaton officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Edith Marie Solomon was born February 18, 1922 in rural Howard County, the daughter of Levi T. and Florence E. (Dodd) Roberts. After her elementary education in rural Howard County, she graduated in 1939 from Cresco High School.

On February 2, 1947 she married Wayne K. Solomon at the First Baptist Church. She was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church and has served in many capacities within the church. She was an active member of the local Gideon's Auxiliary and has held many offices in their organization.

Edith worked at several jobs in the Cresco area, but it was her 20 plus years as a CNA for the Evans Memorial Nursing Home that was the most memorable for her.

She is survived by husband Wayne of Cresco; two daughters: Shirley Bigalk of Cresco and Sharon Solomon of Stewartville, MN; one son: Kenneth of Cresco; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Eleanor Solomon of Cresco.

Edith was preceded in death by one daughter: Donna Donlan; her parents; and one brother: Earl.


Fay Thompson

Fay Hoeye Thompson, 85, died Wednesday, December 24, 2003 in Peoria, AZ.

Memorial services were held in Colorado. Menke Funeral Home handled the arrangements.


Wilfred Hageman

A private memorial was held in Bend, OR for Wilfred "Bill" Hageman and in the spring of 2004 a special celebration will be held in Cresco.

Bill, 62, died in Bend, OR due to a long illness.

Wilfred Hageman was born June 28, 1941 the son of Al and Laura Hageman. He attended St. Joseph's Grade School and Notre Dame High School. After high school he went into the Army for two years. He returned to Cresco.

On November 4, 1967 he married Judy Leigh and they moved to California where he worked for United Airlines as a mechanic. From there they moved to southern California where he worked at Lawrence Welk Country Club as a golf course mechanic for almost 25 years.

In the spring of 1996 Bill became ill and in 1997 was diagnosed with Multi-systems Ataix-degeneration of the cerebellum. He fought the disease and remained at home until the last 20 days of his life. He was in Hospice House in Bend at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife Judy; two children: Brenda and John; five grandchildren; one sister: Irma; and two brothers: Gene and Larry.


Franklin Smith

Memorial services for Franklin Smith of Protivin were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 3 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in New Hampton.

The Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa is in charge of the arrangements. Interment will be held at a later date at Oakland Cemetery in Manchester.

Franklin, 67, died Saturday, December 27, 2003 in his home after a long illness.

Franklin David Smith was born November 2, 1936 on the Smith family farm in rural Sumner, the son of John and Mabel Smith.

On March 10, 1997 he married Shayla Landis in Colfax, WA. He worked many years as a truck driver and mechanic.

He is survived by his wife Shayla of Protivin; one brother; five sisters; many stepchildren and step grandchildren.

Franklin was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers, and two sisters.


Victoria Lansing

Funeral services for Victoria Lansing were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian with Msgr. Cletus J. Hawes officiating.

Her husband, Wilfred and children, placed the pall. Interment was in St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church Cemetery in Ossian. Pallbearers were her 10 grandsons. Schmitz Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Victoria, 93, died Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah after a short illness.

Victoria Josephine Lansing was born December 14, 1910 in Military Township, Winneshiek County, near Festina, the daughter of John and Mary (Buchheit) Hageman. She was baptized and confirmed in the Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church by the late Rev. A.J. Rubly. Following her education at St. Mary.'s School in Festina, she worked several years at St. Mary's in Winona, MN.

On October 24, 1939 she married Wilfred J. Lansing at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church at Festina. They lived on a farm near Ossian until they retired and moved into town.

She was a leader and a co-leader in 4-H for many years as her children were growing.

She loved to garden, raise flowers, quilt, sew, crochet, and cook.

Victoria was treasurer of the Rosary Society, a Red Cross Lady, a Hospital Auxiliary worker and belonged to numerous card clubs. She was a member of St. Francis Rosary Society, Altrua Club, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and the Senior Citizens Club.

She is survived by her husband Wilfred; her children: Bernice Lansing of Marshfield, WI, DiAnn Gerleman of New Hampton, twins, Kenneth of Ossian and Keith of Sumner, and Nancy Lou Hruska of Cresco; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Victoria was preceded in death by one son: Clifford; one grandson; her parents; six brothers: Fred, Philip, Nick, Joe, John and an infant brother Hageman; and seven sisters: Mary Bohr, Mathilda Bohr, Angela Imoehl, Barbara Hageman, Agnes Hageman, her twin Philomena Ott, and Julia, at age 3.


Hanna Nelson

Funeral services for Hanna Nelson, formerly of Elma, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3 at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories in Waterloo.

Interment was in Garden of Memories in Waterloo.

Hanna, 99, died Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at Allen Memorial Hospital of natural causes. She was a resident at the Ravenwood Nursing Home since April of 2002.

Hanna Clara Nelson was born November 22, 1904 in Howard County near Lawler, the daughter of Thomas and Johanne (Swenson) Borlaug. She received her education in country school and then worked at home.

On August 29, 1935 she married Norman J. Nelson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They moved to the Nelson family farm near Elma. She worked on the farm and was a homemaker.

Hanna loved to garden and enjoyed her flowers. She was a member of the Saude Evangelical Lutheran Church.

She is survived by two daughters: Sigrid Joanne Lane of Waterloo and Hazel Braniger of Elma; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and several step great-grandchildren.

Hanna was preceded in death by her husband Norman on February 29, 1996; five brothers: Karl, Simon, Olis, Thomas, and Vilmar; and four sisters: Selva and Anne Borlaug, Sina Watson, and one in infancy.


Eileen McDermott

Funeral services for Eileen McDermott of Burnsville, MN formerly of Cresco and Chester, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 2 at Mary Mother of the Church.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco on Saturday, January 3 at 11:00 a.m. Pallbearers were her nephews: John Casey, Edward Casey, Chris Martin, Casey Martin, Torrie Martin, Andrew Martin, Matthew Maroney, and John Patrick Kelly. White Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Eileen, 64, died Monday, December 29, 2003 at Minneapolis, MN of cancer.

Eileen Marie McDermott was born January 25, 1939 in Cresco the daughter of John and Mary Kelly.

She lived in Bloomington, MN and Illinois and then moved to Burnsville. She was a teacher/child care provider.

She is survived by five sons: Sean, Michael, Kevin, Cullen, and Phillip; two grandchildren; her mother: Mary Kelly; brothers and sisters: Mary Kelly, Steve, Connie Casey, Nancy Martin, Colleen Maroney, Joseph, Catherine Wolff, Beth Rosenboom, and Patrick.

Eileen was preceded in death by her father: John; brother and sister: John and Janet Patrick; and the children's father Terrence McDermott.


Sister Raphael Bina, de N.D.

Funeral services for Sister Raphael Bina, de N.D. of Omaha, NE, formerly of Spillville, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Theodore Richling, Rev. Donald Hawes, and Rev. Louis Trzil officiating.

Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville. Pallbearers were: Art Bina, Paul Bina, Ray Bina, Jerry Bina, and Ed Polansky. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Sr. Raphael, 86, died Saturday, December 27, 2003 at the Notre Dame Motherhouse, Omaha, NE.

Sister Mary Raphael Bina, N.D. was born Ottilia Bina on July 2, 1917 near Spillville, the daughter of Wenceslaus and Rose Ann (Soukup) Bina. She attended St. Wenceslaus grade school in Spillville. At the age of 15, she entered the convent. She returned home because of an illness, and after she was well, she and her sister, Victoria now Sister Antonia entered the Convent together on August 12, 1938. They took their Profession of First Vows on August 13, 1940. She spent all her years of Ministry at the Notre Dame Motherhouse in Omaha in the following capacities: directress of boarders, sewing assistant, care of flower gardens and grottoes, arranging flowers for the altars, portress, care of the infirm Sisters and Sisters relatives, making home made soap, serving meals and prayer ministry. She celebrated her 60th jubilee at St. Wenceslaus in Spillville on August 13, 2000.

She is survived by one brother: George of Renton, WA; and three sisters: Sister Antonia Bina, N.D. of Omaha, NE, Agnes Robertson and Anna Mixdorf, both of Waterloo.

Sr. Raphael Bina was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers: Jimmy, Charles, Tony, and Jerome; and one sister: Rose Bina in infancy.


Richard Nelson

Funeral services for Richard Nelson formerly of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 2 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco with Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiating.

Interment was in Saratoga Cemetery in Saratoga. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Richard, 72, died Monday, December 29, 2003 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Richard D. Nelson was born November 20, 1931 in Decorah, the son of Albin and Julia (Anderson) Nelson. He graduated from high school in 1949 and entered the Navy in 1951. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1955, where he attended Luther College until 1956. In 1959, he graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, Richard was a reliability engineer for Lockheed working on the Polaris Missile in Sunnyvale, CA. He worked at United Test Labs in San Jose, CA and then joined NASA in Downey, CA as an Apollo project engineer. He ended his professional career with his brother Joe's company, Engineered Products, in Waterloo.

Richard enjoyed reading the Bible, watching TV with the Cubs or the Iowa Hawkeyes, listening to classical jazz, and cooking.

He is survived by his wife Joy (Lomica) of Kasson, MN; his children: Jon of Boulder City, NV, Laura Schroeder of Mantorville, MN, and Daniel of Truxton, AZ; and seven grandchildren.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; nine brothers and sisters


Pastor Kirk Muller

Funeral services for Pastor Kirk Muller of Beaumont, TX were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 2 in the Chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Beaumont with Dr. Harlan Betz officiating.

Services were held on Monday, January 5 at Victor Baptist Church in Victor, IA with Dr. Harlan D. Betz officiating. Interment was in Victor Memorial Cemetery in Victor. Pallbearers were: Trent N. Muller, Greg J. Muller, Michael Bott, Justin Bott, Tim Daniels, Harley Shaull, Milo Mettler, and Dick Blaess. Forest Lawn Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Pastor Kirk, 56, died Monday, December 29, 2003.

Kirk Jaye Muller was born June 2, 1947 in Grinnell and raised in Victor. He was a 1965 graduate of HLV Community High School where he was active in band, choir, football, baseball, golf, and basketball. He was an active member of Victor Baptist Church. He earned his BA in Economics from Luther College in 1969. He earned his Masters of Theology in Old Testament Literature & Exegesis from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1973. He completed all of the course work at Dallas Theological Seminary toward a Doctor of Ministry degree.

Kirk was the current and founding pastor of Grace Community Bible Church in Kountze, TX. He served as pastor of Cresco Community Chapel in Cresco for 10 and one half years and as pastor of Beaumont Bible Church in Beaumont, TX for six years. He ministered in many other churches in the Southeast Texas area as well as at Forest Lawn. He was an employee of Forest Lawn memorial park and funeral Home since October of 1990 where he served as Family Service Supervisor and Sales Manager.

He is survived by his wife Sheryl of Beaumont; two sons: Trent and Greg, both of Beaumont; parents: Harland and Marion Muller of Victor; and one sister: Harleen Sue Bott of Williamsburg.


Larry Rice

Funeral services for Larry Rice of Tripoli were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3 at St. Johns Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson with Rev. John Moser officiating.

Interment was in St. Johns Catholic Cemetery in Fort Atkinson. Honorary attendees were: Representatives of the Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Iowa. Pallbearers were: Dennis Evelsizer, Bob Evelsizer, Diana Morgan, Shirley Stone, Carol Sachse, Paul Hassing, Jeff Hassing, Steve Hassing, and Richard Hassing. Schluter-Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Larry, 59, died Sunday, December 28, 2003 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo following a third heart attack.

Larry E. Rice was born August 3, 1944 in Jefferson the son of Ralph and Thelma (Gander) Rice. He attended Bagley grade school, moved to North Dakota in 1956, and graduated from Wyndmere High School. He attended the North Dakota State School of Science, graduated from the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks with a degree in insurance. After his fathers death he continued the family farm operation. In 1985, he and his mother moved back to Jefferson. He worked as a Crop Hail Adjuster during the summer while attending Iowa State University to obtain his teaching degree in History. He continued to work as a Crop Hail Adjuster for Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Iowa following graduation. In 1990, he was promoted to Field Supervisor. He held this position until his death.

On September 11, 1992 he married Mary (Meinert) Vrba at St. Johns Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson.

He is survived by his wife Mary of Tripoli; step children: Doug Vrba of Boone, Sheryl Holien of Ossian, Bev Minear of Robins, Barb Mashek of Calmar, and Dean Vrba of Fort Atkinson; eight step grandchildren; his mother: Thelma of Boone; three sisters: Lola Booth of Jefferson, Mary Evelsizer of Ogden, and Joyce Hassing of Randall, MN.

Larry was preceded in death by his father: Ralph; and one sister: Wilma.


Viola Stevens

Funeral services for Viola Stevens of Monticello were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 2 at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Monticello with Rev. Lee Evenson officiating.

Interment was in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah. Pallbearers were: Scott Anderson, Jeremy Pettit, Paul Mauel, Mark Stevens, Larry and Mike Meyer. Peterson Chapel St. Michael-Albertville handled the arrangements.

Viola, 94, died Sunday, December 28, 2003 at her residence.

Viola L. Stevens was born February 15, 1909 in Postville, the daughter of John and Lena (Nolte) Meyer. She lived in Postville for three years and her parents purchased a farm near Ossian where she lived for four years. In 1916 the family moved to Cresco where they lived for five years, they returned to their farm near Ossian in 1921. She lived in Ossian until she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. There she received a two-year teaching degree. She taught school in Hamlontown and Urbana for a number of years.

On June 6, 1935 she married Clifford Stevens. They lived in Decorah for three years. In 1938 they moved near Cresco where they farmed for 27 years. In 1965 they sold their farm and purchased and operated the Francis Hotel in Rochester. In 1977 they moved to Sand Prairie where they lived for 20 years. In 1997 she sold her home and moved to Earl Brown Terrace Apartments in Brooklyn Center. For the past three years she lived in Monticello at Mississippi Shores Senior Housing Complex.

Viola was the top saleswoman for selling Stanley Products having won many awards and trips. She also loved trivia and telling good jokes.

She is survived by her children: James of Helena, MT and Joyce Storck of Greenfield; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

Viola was preceded in death by her husband Clifford in November 1977; her parents; brothers: Lawrence, Albert, Lloyd, Walter, and Henry and Harvey in infancy; and one infant sister: Elsie.


Orville Hovden

Funeral services for Orville Hovden of Decorah were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 4 at Madison Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

Orville's nieces placed the pall. Interment was in Madison Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Decorah. Pallbearers were: Jon Bruns, Jason Graves, Tom Rima, Jay Schiltz, Jack Schult, Mike Schult, Art Swestka, and Kenneth Tekippe. Schluter-Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Orville, 93, died Friday, January 2, 2004 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah following a long illness.

Orville Klemet Hovden was born August 30, 1910 in Madison Township, rural Decorah, the son of Anton and Alma (Ramstad) Hovden. Orville was baptized and confirmed at the Madison Lutheran Church by Rev. D.C. Jordahl. He was educated in rural schools in Madison Township. At the age of 14, he started helping area farmers. Orville enlisted in the US Army, serving from June 5, 1942 to August 30, 1945. He served in Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, and the Po Valley. He returned to Decorah and worked for Nelson Brothers Quarry Drilling and then the Fred Carlson Co., retiring in 1975.

Orville enjoyed reading, watching TV and sports. He was a member of the Helof-Holm VFW Chapter #1977 and the Madison Lutheran Church. Orville had been a resident of the Oneota Care Facility for the past two years.

He is survived by two sisters: Irene Albertson of Ridgeway and Margaret Arneson of Decorah.

Orville was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Joseph and Oscar; and three sisters: Cora Grice, Ethel Drape, and Alice Callison.


Rosemary Gebel

Funeral services for Rosemary Gebel were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista with Monsignor John Hemann officiating.

Rosemary's children placed the pall. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista. Pallbearers were: Patrick McAvoy, Kelly Gebel, David Gebel, Ben Gegel, Luke Gebel, and Corey McAvoy. Honorary pallbearers were: Julie Malik, Ann White, Sue Mahoney, Pam Gribben, and Selena Christiansen. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Rosemary, 91, died Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

Rosemary Frances Gebel was born October 16, 1912 on a farm near Elma, the daughter of Ray and Margaret (Biwer) Sullivan. She was a graduate of Immaculate Conception Academy in Elma and attended Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids for a short time.

In November 1931 she married Art Gebel at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. They farmed south of Alta Vista and later moved to the Gebel farm south and east of Alta Vista where she was currently residing.

Rosemary enjoyed dancing, listening to music, especially Guy Lombardo and Lawrence Welk, cooking and baking bread and pies.

She was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista, Rosary Society, and the Alta Vista VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by five children: Steve of Alta Vista, Gary of Alta Vista, Mary McAvoy of Alta Vista, Richard of Alta Vista, and Dennis of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Jane Sullivan of Waterloo and Geraldine Wengert of Granite Falls, MN.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her husband Art on February 5, 1962; one son: Robert; her parents; and two brothers: Leo and Dan.

Al Dietzenbach

Funeral services for Al Dietzenbach of St. Lucas were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 9 at St. Lukes Catholic Church in St. Lucas with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

The pall was placed by his three children. Interment was in St. Lukes Catholic Church Cemetery in St. Lucas. Pallbearers were: Leland Holthaus, Loren Dietzenbach, Bob Mihm, Gary Dietzenbach, Tom Meyer, and Parnell Brincks. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Al, 89, died Monday, January 5, 2004 at the New Hampton Care Center of natural causes.

Al J. Dietzenbach was born October 14, 1914 in rural Winneshiek County, near Festina, the son of Andrew and Cecelia (Kipp) Dietzenbach. He received his education in Festina.

On August 30, 1938 he married Bernadine Catherine Mihm at St. Lukes Catholic Church. They farmed west of St. Lucas. Bernadine died on April 1, 2003, following a brief illness.

Al was a member of St. Lukes Catholic Church and Rosary Society, and a longtime member of the Iowa Holstein Association.

He truly enjoyed farming.

He is survived by two sons: Lyle of Protivin and Vern of St. Lucas; one daughter: Marcia Swehla of Petersburg, KY; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother: Wilfred of St. Lucas; and two sisters: Hildegard Brincks of Ft. Atkinson and Germaine Holthaus of Calmar.

Al was preceded in death by his wife Bernadine; one great-granddaughter; his parents; two sisters: Agnes Blong and Cathryn Meinert; and one brother Francis in infancy.


Gary Schmitt

Funeral services for Gary Schmitt of Calmar were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 8 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar with Rev. Donald Schmitt and Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Interment was in St. Johns Catholic Cemetery in Fort Atkinson. Honorary pallbearers were: Wiltgen Construction co-workers. Pallbearers were: Chris Wiltgen, Casey Wiltgen, Aaron Schmitt, Cory Ellingson, Jesse Leuenberger, and Keith Ott.

Gary, 54, died Sunday, January 4, 2004 at his home.

Gary Christopher Schmitt was born March 23, 1949 in Decorah the son of Linus and Veronica (Winter) Schmitt. Gary was a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout and attended St. Johns Catholic School in Fort Atkinson. He graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 1967. He served in the US Army from 1968-1971, serving in Vietnam from 1969-1970.

On May 26, 1973 he married Linda Hubka at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. After he returned home, he worked for his dad at Linies Feed Store, Klimesh Motor Sales and then for Wiltgen Construction for 31 years.

Gary was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and was an active member of the Calmar Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

Gary enjoyed spending time in his garage.

He is survived by his wife Linda; one daughter: Lisa Schmitt of Toluca Lake, CA; three sisters: Judy Ott of Fort Atkinson, Sue Blong of Fort Atkinson; and Gladys Huinker of Calmar; and two brothers: Dale of Peosta and Daryl of Fort Atkinson.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers in infancy: Joseph, George, and Patrick.


Katherine Edsill

A memorial service for Katherine Edsill was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 9 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco with Rev. Allen Hemeier officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Katherine, 86, died Sunday, January 4, 2004 at the Westbrook Good Samaritan Center.

Katherine Marie Edsill was born December 27, 1917 in Denver, CO, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Allen) Twedell. She was raised by John and Sarah Morris. As a small child, she moved to Waterloo where Katherine attended school and graduated from Waterloo High School.

On June 28, 1936 she married Harold Edsill in Waterloo. They lived in Waterloo. Upon retirement, they moved to Cresco, where Katherine lived until becoming a resident of the Westbrook Good Samaritan Center in Westbrook, MN.

Katherine was active in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. She enjoyed sewing and antiques.

She is survived by her children: John of Kearney, NE and Harold of Westbrook; five grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Katherine was preceded in death by her husband; parents; foster parents; and three brothers.


Jerome Elsbernd

Jerome, 78, died Monday, January 12, 2004 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI following a long illness.

Norbert Franzen

Funeral services for Norbert Franzen of St. Lucas were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 10 at St. Lukes Catholic Church in St. Lucas with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

The pall was placed by his brother and sister-in-law, Delbert and Peggy Franzen. Interment was in St. Lukes Catholic Church Cemetery in St. Lucas. Norbert, 78, died Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Norbert Theodore Franzen was born April 21, 1925 in rural Fayette County, near St. Lucas, the son of Edward J. and Rose (Smith) Franzen. Norbert was baptized, confirmed and received his education from the St. Lukes Catholic Church in St. Lucas.

On September 12, 1950, he was inducted into the United States Army. He was honorably discharged March 18, 1957. Norbert farmed west of St. Lucas with his brothers following his military service. He retired from farming in May of 2000, when he entered the Guest Home.

He is survived by three brothers: Linus of Lawler, Delbert of Waucoma, and Donald of West Union.

Norbert was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters: Lenora Hackman, Agnes Pelikian, Luella Holthaus, and Emma Franzen; and three brothers: Julius, Matthew, and Mathias in infancy.


Leonard Barloon

Funeral services for Leonard Barloon of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 12 at Holy Family Parish - St. Mary's Center in New Hampton with Msgr. Carl Schmitt officiating.

The pall was placed by his wife and two sons. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in New Hampton. Leonard, 79, died Thursday, January 8, 2004 at the Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Leonard John Barloon was born March 7, 1924 on the family farm near Waucoma, in rural Winneshiek County, the son of Louis J. and Adella (Shileny) Barloon. He attended country school near his home.

On May 7, 1946 he married Leona Ott at St. Lukes Catholic Church in St. Lucas. They farmed the family farm near Waucoma, that had been settled by his grandparents, John and Anna Barloon. They retired from farming in 1985 and moved to New Hampton.

Leonard had been a member of the Farm Bureau and Assumption Catholic Church in Little Turkey. He was an active member of Knights of Columbus and St. Mary's Catholic Church and Rosary Society in New Hampton

He enjoyed woodworking, clock-making, card clubs, and accordion playing.

He is survived by his wife Leona; two sons: James of Rochester, MN and Ronald of Killeen, TX; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Leonard was preceded in death by an infant grandchild; his parents; and one sister: Lucille Soukup.


Christopher Burke

Christopher John Dale Burke, son of Dennis and Janna (Busch) Burke was stillborn Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alta Vista. Interment was in the Union Cemetery. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Christopher is survived by his parents: Dennis and Janna Burke of Alta Vista; one brother: Mason Burke; paternal grandparents: John and Eleanor Burke of Elma; and maternal grandparents: Roger and Regena Busch of Monticello.


Sylvia Scrabeck

Funeral services for Sylvia Scrabeck of Harmony, MN will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, January 16 at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony.

Interment will be in Greenfield Lutheran Cemetery.

Sylvia, 84, died Sunday, January 11, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Jerome Elsbernd

Funeral services for Jerome Elsbernd of Spillville were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 15 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Church Cemetery in Spillville. Pallbearers were Jerome's grandsons: Jay Elsbernd, Brian Brincks, Jeffrey Brincks, William Garbers, Glen Elsbernd, and Scott Elsbernd. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Jerome, 78, died Monday, January 12, 2004 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI following a long illness.

Jerome Joseph Elsbernd was born July 20, 1925 near Calmar, the son John and Martha (Kuennen) Elsbernd. Jerome attended grade school in Festina and then graduated from high school in Epworth.

On June 13, 1949 he married Luella Schmitt at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson by Father Stephen Kucera. They farmed north of Spillville from 1949-1985 then moved to Spillville.

Jerome received the Pioneer Dairyman Award in 1993. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, served on the Parish Council, and was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2744 in Protivin.

He enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, playing cards, and traveling.

He is survived by his wife Luella of Spillville; three sons: Steven of Ridgeway, Alan of Calmar, and Darrel of Lime Springs; four daughters: Joan McIntire of Farmington, MN, Kay Garbers of LaCrosse, WI, Nancy Brincks of Calmar, and Debra Beckman of Winona, MN; 16 grandchildren; one brother: Roger of Decorah; and two sisters: Sister Ruth Elsbernd of Eldridge and Colette Kuhn of Cresco.

Jerome was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Joseph as a child and Arnold.


Anna Havel

Funeral services for Anna Havel were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 14 at Notre Dame Parish - St. Joseph's Worship Center with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

The pallbearers placed the pall on the casket. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery in Schley. Pallbearers were: Dale, Darrel, David, Nicholas and Luke Andera, and Lee Pecinovsky. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Anna, 92, died Sunday, January 11, 2004 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco after having suffered a stroke.

Anna Jane Havel was born March 6, 1911 on a farm south of Cresco in New Oregon Township, the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Pecinovsky) Pecinovsky. She attended rural school through the early grades. Since there was such a large family, she had to quit school and work at various homes to make a living.

On May 22, 1934 she married Frank J. Havel at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They made their home on a farm. In the early years, she loved to ride horses.

Anna was a member of the Holy Cross Church until it became an Oratory, then joined Notre Dame Parish - St. Joseph's Worship Center. She was a member of the Rosary Society of both parishes.

She is survived by two daughters: Janet Andera and Diane Pecinovsky, both of Cresco; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Grace Roszell of Waterloo.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband Frank on January 10, 1982; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; her parents; three brothers: George, Ernest, and infant Eddie; and six sisters: Ida Voves, May Betts, Clara Horn, infant Frances, infant Caroline, and infant Elsie Pecinovsky.


Joseph Murray

Joseph, 75, died Thursday, January 15, 2004 at the Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of cancer.

Joseph T. Murray was born April 16, 1928 in Cresco, the son of Joseph and Helena (Shekleton) Murray. He received his education at the Catholic School in Lawler and graduated from Lawler High School in 1946.

On October 27, 1956 he married Shirley Griffin at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler. They lived in Lawler. Joseph was a trucker and livestock dealer in the Lawler area.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler.

He is survived by his wife Shirley; two sons: David of Chesapeake, VA and Tim of Mankato, MN; one daughter: Julie Rondeau of Austin, TX; and eight grandchildren.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers: Jim, Lee, Gene, and Cletus, and Charles in infancy.


Dr. Albert Winter

Funeral services for Dr. Albert Winter of Fredericksburg were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church - Richfield, rural Sumner with Pastor Milton D. Johnson officiating.

Albert, 88, died Friday, January 16, 2004 at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

Dr. Albert Winter was born April 3, 1915 in rural Chickasaw County, the son of William H.F. and Anna B (Beier) Winter. He attended Waucoma High School when in his sophomore year he suffered an accident that left him totally blind. He attended Iowa School for the Blind, where he graduated with honors in 1934. After graduation he entered the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, IL and graduated on June 18, 1937. He opened his chiropractic office in Centerville, SD in June of 1938. He moved to Fredericksburg in April of 1942, where he continued his practice until retirement.

On July 15, 1946 he married Laeone Saltarelli. She passed away June 14, 1962. He later married Esther Ritchie who passed away October 5, 1973.

Dr. Winter was a member of the Lions Club, Commercial Club, Bank Directors and was also a Rosicrucian.

His hobbies were fishing, music, and cards.

He is survived by one step daughter: Lucille Malone of Louisville, KY; and one sister: Doretta C. Johnson of Sumner.

Dr. Winter was preceded in death by his wives Laeone and Esther; his parents; and one brother: Erwin.


Louis Kurash

Louis, 88, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at his home from cancer.

Louis Kurash was born March 14, 1915 in Waucoma, the son of Albert and Alice (Barloon) Kurash. He attended Waucoma schools.

On March 27, 1940 he married Gertrude Kuhn at St. John's Nepocena Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson. They farmed near Waucoma. In 1987, they retired from farming and moved into New Hampton.

He was an active member of St. Mary's Parish in Waucoma and later St. Joseph's Parish in New Hampton. Louis was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1697 for over 50 years.

He had many hobbies including, fishing, hunting, woodworking, spending time at the lake in Minnesota, playing cards, and going for rides in the country.

He is survived by his wife Gertrude; two sons: Robert of Huntington Beach, CA and Paul of Amana; two daughters: Susan Fausch of Lake City, MN and Marion Peters of Raymond; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Cecelia Manderfield of New Hampton, Agnes Lynch of Waucoma, and Lorraine Schmitz of Waterloo.

Louis was preceded in death by an infant grandson; his parents; an infant brother; and one sister: Helen Tomasek.


Charles Starr

Funeral services for Charles Starr of LaPorte City were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7 at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City with Rev. David Werges of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating.

Interment was in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City. Pallbearers were: Greg Reicherts, Scott Dunn, Trent Roethler, Jeff Wright, Tim Starr, Rod Katcher, Tracy Starr, and Jim Schwickerath. Honorary pallbearers were: Darol Burge, Dean Heine, Vince Glaser, Mick Hansen, and Ray Knowles.

Charles, 69, died Saturday, January 3, 2004 at Waterloo.

Charles W. Starr was born December 14, 1934 in Mitchell County, the son of Charles and Dorothy (Johnson) Starr. He received his education at Deerefield #3 in rural Chickasaw County and graduated from Colwell High School.

In June of 1955 he married Elaine Johnson. He later married Clare Foote on February 28, 1992. He worked as a mechanic in North Iowa later going on to work at John Deere in Waterloo where he worked for 30 years, retiring in 1995.

He had many hobbies including collecting and working on vintage cars, fishing, hunting, collecting guns, and spending time at the cabin in Minnesota.

He is survived by his wife Clare (Voves) Foote of LaPorte City; one son: Benny of Elma; three step sons: Russel Foote, John Foote, and David Foote; one step daughter: Carol Foote Conry; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers: James of Charles City and Herbert of Clear Lake; and five sisters: Lorraine Enderson of Lake Mills, Delores Wright, Shirley Katcher, and Lucile Dunn, all of Charles City, and Marjorie Roethler of Elma.

Charles was preceded in death by one step son: Bruce Foote; and his parents.


Sylvia Scrabeck

Sylvia, 84, died Sunday, January 11, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Sylvia Mae Scrabeck was born November 29, 1919 in Cresco the daughter of Frank and Martha Henry. She grew up in Florenceville.

On December 6, 1939 she married Sidney Scrabeck. They farmed west of Harmony, and she lived there until two and one half years ago when she moved to Harmony Healthcare.

Sylvia was a member of the Greenfield Lutheran Church. She enjoyed crocheting.

She is survived by three children: Viola Johnson of White Bear Lake, MN, Robert of Rochester, and Steve of Harmony; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband Sidney on December 10, 1989; three sisters; and one brother.


Marilyn Stanley

Memorial services for Marilyn Stanley of Stafford, TX, formerly of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 24 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco with Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiating.

Inurnment will be in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Visitation will be held at the Conway Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23.

Marilyn, 68, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004.

Marilyn Ann Stanley was born April 29, 1935 in Cresco, the daughter of Velma Womack and Michael Slifka Jr. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1953.

On August 13, 1955 she married Charles Stanley at United Methodist Church in Cresco. They lived in many different cities due to the nature of his employment. For the last nine years they resided in Stafford, TX.

Marilyn was a homemaker who enjoyed reading, playing cards, bingo, games, and traveling.

She is survived by her husband Charles; children: Michael, Victoria, Kathryn Manning, Richard, John, and Christina Stovall; six grandchildren; and brothers and sisters: Max Slifka, her twin brother, Martin Slifka, Kenneth Slifka, Kay Albertson, and Michaeleen Riehle.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents: Velma (Womack) Mintey and Michael Slifka, Jr., and brother: Keith Slifka.


Georgie Young

Funeral services for Georgie Young of Canton, MN were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 19 at the First Presbyterian Church in Canton with Pastor Jim Saife officiating.

Georgie, 87, died Thursday, January 15, 2004 at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel MN following a short illness.

Georgie Martin Young was born November 17, 1916 on the home farm, the son of Elbert and Stella Young. He was baptized and confirmed in the First Presbyterian Church in Canton. He graduated from Canton High School and attended the University of Minnesota.

On June 4, 1941 he married Irene Jones. They lived and farmed on the home farm, until they moved to Canton. There he raised Belgian Horses, that he sold all over the United States.

Georgie was a member and past elder of the Canton-Scotland First Presbyterian Church. He served on the Elliota School Board, and was a member of the Harmony-Canton Saddle Club for many years.

He loved parades and would always try to have an entry. In the past he entered four and six horse hitches, along with his father. He was in the Mabel-Hesper Steam Engine parade not long ago; this time riding on a float sponsored by Green Lea Manor Nursing Home.

He is survived by three sons: Bruce of Oregon, Michael of Hastings, MN, and William of Canton, MN; one daughter: Joanne Henry of Marion; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Georgie was preceded in death by his wife Irene on February 4, 1992; one son: Roger; and one sister: Helen Setzler.

Arlene Hyke

Funeral services for Arlene Hyke of Lourdes were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes with Monsignor John Hemann officiating.

Arlene, 71, died Saturday, January 24, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of cancer.

Arlene Rosella Hyke was born September 26, 1932 at Lourdes, the daughter of Frank and Abbie (Kubik) Nibaur. She received her education at Our Lady of Lourdes School.

On April 16, 1951 she married James Hyke at Our lady of Lourdes Catholic church by Fr. Noonan. They lived in Lourdes where they farmed and remained after retirement. Arlene worked for the Pinicon in New Hampton for over 20 years and later worked at the Chatter Box Restaurant in Ridgeway.

Arlene enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards, cooking, and bingo scratch tickets. She especially looked forward to the annual Steeple Days Celebration and antique tractor pull in Lourdes.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and Rosary Society.

She is survived by three children: Deb Riley of New Hampton, Ann Ollendieck of Ridgeway, and Tim of Cresco; eight grandchildren; and two sisters: Regina Praska of Elma and Mildred Flaherty of Cresco.

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband James on May 1, 2000; her parents; one brother: Raymond; and one sister: Rosella Nibaur.


Kenneth Roethler

Funeral services for Kenneth Roethler of Charles City, formerly of Elma, were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 26 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Monsignor John Hemann officiating.

Kenneth, 76, died Thursday, January 22, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN of natural causes.

Kenneth Clarence Roethler was born January 26, 1927 near Elma, the son of Leo and Mae (Moosman) Roethler. He attended Howard County Country Schools near his family's home.

On June 17, 1950 he married Evelyn Lockey at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed in the Davis Corners area. They later moved to rural Alta Vista where he worked at the Equity and continued farming. He then went to work at Oliver-White Farm in Charles City. Later he operated a stump grinding business in Elma for nearly 20 years. They retired and moved to Charles City in 1989, where they were residing.

Kenneth enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, wood carving, and wintering in Arizona.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn of Charles City; three children: Dale of Alta Vista, Randy of Elma, Debbie Roethler of Cresco; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five brothers: Milo of Waterloo, Wally of Waukon, James of Riceville, Leroy of Elma, and Robert of Orchard; and one sister: LaVonne Armstrong of Gilbertville.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Lucille Roney; and two brothers: Jack and Donald.


Charles Pazour

Graveside services for Charles Pazour of Marion, formerly of Cedar Rapids, were held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, January 23 at Shawver Cemetery in rural Tipton with Rev. James Brokman officiating.

Charles, 76, died Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at the Crestview Acres Care Center in Marion following an extended illness.

Charles R. Pazour was born January 1, 1928 in Cedar Rapids and was a lifelong resident.

On January 2, 1956 he married Lucille Riha of Protivin at Saint Ludmilla's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. They were later divorced. Charles was employed at Penick and Ford for 11 years and following that was a self-employed carpenter until his retirement. He was a peacetime Army veteran.

Charles enjoyed gardening, baking kolaches and pies, and was a fan of all kinds of sports.

He is survived by five children: Debra Law of Solon, Doreen Cook of Marion, Sharon Pazour of Cedar Rapids, Sheryl Pazour of Cedar Rapids, and Michael of Solon; and four grandchildren.

Charles was preceded in death by his former wife Lucille; one son: Thomas; his parents: Charles and Mary (Drzmisek) Pazour; one sister: Libbie Packard; and one brother: Stanley.


Robert Ball

Robert, 85, died Monday, January 19, 2004 at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters in Oelwein.

Robert William Ball was born June 23, 1918 at Lawler, the son of Patrick and Mary (Brannon) Ball. He attended rural Waucoma schools and graduated from Lawler High School in 1936. He farmed with his father until he entered the service on November 4, 1942.

On May 8, 1943 he married Carolyn Barker at the Immaculate Conception Church in Sumner. They moved to Tampa, FL where they lived until Robert was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant with the Army Air Corp. They moved back to Fredericksburg, where they farmed on the Barker family farm.

Robert took great pride in his Guernsey herd and large garden he raised every year. He was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church and the Penhook Catholic Church. They retired from farming in 1980 and moved to Oelwein in October of 2001.

He enjoyed hunting pheasants and deer and later painting and ceramics.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn of Oelwein; one son: Terrill of Iowa City; one daughter: Catherine Ries of Elma; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Joseph; and one sister: Elaine Trewin.


Lucille Shatek

Funeral services for Lucille Shatek of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 26 at Holy Family Parish - St. Mary's Center in New Hampton with Monsignor Carl Schmitt officiating.

Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Lucille, 78, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes.

Lucille Margaret Shatek was born September 26, 1925 at Waucoma, the daugher of Kieron and Julia (Kruse) Burke. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School and graduated from Waucoma High School in 1943. After graduation she attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette receiving her teaching degree. Lucille taught at Sumner for two years and for two years in Elma.

On August 23, 1948 she married Edward Shatek at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma. They resied in Austin, MN until moving to New Hampton in 1993.

Lucille was a member of the Holy Family Parish, Rosary Society, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by four sons: Gene of Denver, CO, Richard of Minneapolis, MN, Michael of San Antonio, TX, Tracy of Sydney, Australia; two daughters: Mary Falconer of Simi Valley, CA and Karen Jensen of Colleyville, TX; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters: Margaret Steinlage of New Hampton and Agnes Meyer of Decorah.

Lucille was preceded in death by her husband Edward; her parents; and one brother: Leo.


Hazel Meyer

Funeral services for Hazel Meyer of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 23 at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center in New Hampton with Monsignor Carl Schmitt officiating.

The pall was placed by her five children. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton. Pallbearers were: Mark Meyer, Eric Meyer, Kevin Bohach, Jason McGrane, Brenda McGrane, and Melissa Pitz. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Hazel, 88, died Monday, January 19, 2004 at the New Hampton Care Center of natural causes.

Hazel C. Meyer was born January 27, 1915 in rural Chickasaw County near Little Turkey, the daughter of Dennis and Margaret (Sheridan) Tierney. She attended school in New Hampton and graduated from high school in New Hampton. Hazel received additional training to receive a teaching certificate.

On November 9, 1943 she married Herbert Louis Meyer at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler. They initially lived north of New Hampton and Hazel taught rural country school in the Brick School House five miles east of New Hampton as well as teaching in Fort Atkinson and Springbrook. They moved to their home on Sherman Street in 1969. They spent time going to dances in Lawler and Spillville. Herb died on August 7, 1983. Hazel remained in her home until July 26, 2000 when she became a resident of the New Hampton Care Center.

She was a member of the Holy Family Parish and Rosary Society.

She is survived by three daughters: Gladys McGrane of Elma, Donna Bohach of Decorah, and Lois Pitz of New Hampton; two sons: Duane of Charles City and Al of San Antonio, TX; 13 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Herbert; her parents; and three sisters: Blanche Croatt, Mabel Smith, and Bernetta Bakula.


Rose Decker

Funeral services for Rose Decker of Lime Springs were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 23 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lime Springs with Rev. Linda Prestholt-Johnson officiating.

Interment will be in the spring at New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco. Pallbearers were: Brian Roesler, Darwin Roesler, Shad Decker, David Sjullie, David Sjullie, Jr., Gregory Sjullie, and Adam Howland. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Rose, 92, died Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at Colonial Manor in Elma.

Rose Barbara Decker was born March 31, 1911 in Fayette County, the daughter of John and Mary Koester.

On October 25, 1934 she married Louie Decker.

Rose loved working with her flowers, sewing, quilting, and crocheting.

She is survived by six children: Betty Roesler of Lime Springs, Carl of Lawler, Arlene Sjullie of Cedar Rapids, Donald of Tyler, TX, Luella Postel of Central City, and Louie of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and one sister: Lillian Farrell of LaCrosse, WI.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband Louie; one step grandchild; her parents; and one brother.


Olga Wemett

Funeral services for Olga Wemett were held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, January 23 at United Methodist Church in Lime Springs with Rev. Candraeah officiating.

Interment will be in the spring in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs. Pallbearers were: Richard and Curtis Jones, Dan and Jon Reis, Eric and Don Mork. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Olga, 95, died Monday, January 19, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Olga Belinda Wemett was born February 8, 1908 in Fillmore County, MN, south of Newburg on the original Garness homestead, the daughter of Erick and Anna Mary (Garness) Erickson. She was baptized at the Garness Trinity Lutheran Church and later moved with her family to the Riceford area, where she was confirmed at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in 1922. She attended Riceford School and later assisted her parents at home.

On January 22, 1934 she married Harry Y. Wemett at the Newburg Methodist Church. They farmed in the Newburg-Lenora areas until 1944 when they purchased a farm north of Lime Springs. They joined the Lime Springs Methodist church and remained members.

Olga was a homemaker and farm wife. She enjoyed cooking, especially traditional Norwegian foods. Health problems brought her to live at the Howard Residential Care Facility in the fall of 1999 where she resided until her death.

She is survived by one daughter: Rita Jones of Lime Springs; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Olga was preceded in death by her husband Harry in 1986; one daughter: Joanne; her brothers: Alvin, Olean, Edward, Herman, Leo, and Ernest; and one sister: Mabel Paulson.
