CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Leonard F. Hrdlicka of Cresco was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Father Daniel Knipper officiating. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 3-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, with a Scripture Service to follow at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at the church.

Leonard, 84, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Leonard Frances Hrdlicka was born Oct. 9, 1927 on a farm near Spillville, the son of Frank and Rose (Milota) Hrdlicka.


On Oct. 7, 1952 he married Donna Bouska in Waucoma, Iowa. They worked a farm for many years. He was also a long time employee at the Cresco Creamery, and for Howard County Seconday Roads. Leonard also had part-time jobs hauling milk, mowing the Cresco fairgrounds, and driving dump truck for Malek Builders.

Leonard had a true love for the outdoors. He was content to spend all day with a fishing pole in his hand, teaching his grandchildren how to fish or just relaxing by a stream. He especially loved hitting all the trout streams in Northeast Iowa. Leonard also loved hunting and trapping, with his sons, grandsons, and the guys. He enjoyed listening to Polka music, watching old western movies, and playing cards. Leonard was very enthusiastic about car racing, from the Cresco fairgrounds to NASCAR. He was an avid collector of calendars and caps. Most of all Leonard loved spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his children: Jan (Bill) Hennessy of Yorkville, Ill., and their daughter Kate, son-in-law, Brett Hamlett of Cedar Rapids, and his children, Nathan and Nick, her sons, Jerry (Julie) of Fort Dodge, and their daughter, Megan, Jeff (Rita) of Cresco, and their children, Frank and Korey, and Jack (Maureen) of Decorah and their children, Jenna, Jacob, Donnie, and Derek; and his sister: Wilma Sobolik of Cresco.

Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, Donna on Dec. 10, 2011; a daughter: Jane Hamlett; his parents; his sisters: Adella Kostohryz and Mary Ann in infancy; and brothers-in-law: Arnold Sobolik and Shorty (Frank) Kostohryz.

A Leonard Hrdlicka Memorial Fund has been established.

Gordon Watros, 83

CRESCO - Funeral services for Gordon O. Watros of Cresco were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Friends called one hour prior to services.

Gordon, 83, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Gordon Oliver Watros was born April 22, 1928 in Albert Lea, Minn. He proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War.


On Nov. 13, 1954, he married Phyllis Herold. Gordon served in law enforcement for nearly 30 years.

After retirement, Gordon moved to Clear Lake, where he volunteered as a probation officer through AARP.

He is survived by a son: Lon Watros; daughters: Mary (Steve) Mrdjenovich, Susann Carr, Cynthia (Jim) Peterson, Janenne (Tim) O'Donnell, and Jennifer (Jeff) Ginapp; 15 grandchildren: Nicole (Matt), Heather (Jed), Jessica (Tom), Justin, Christopher, Ryan (Kayla), Andrew, Jeremy (Erin), Ashley (Tony), Cody, Megan, Zachary (Liz), Maranda, Leah, Jake (Dana); and 16 great-grandchildren and one on the way.

He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis; his sister: Joyce; and his parents.



Lt. Col. (retired) Thomas Bouska, 90

CRESCO - A Mass of Remembrance for Lt. Col. (retired) Thomas E. Bouska of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco. Inurnment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Friends may greet the family from 5-7 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 5 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Thomas, 90, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.

Thomas E. Bouska was born in Cresco, Iowa, the son of Edward and Susan (Lusson) Bouska. He graduated from Cresco High School, after which he worked at the Cresco Greenhouse until he was inducted into the US Army in 1943. He completed pre-flight and advanced bombardier training at Santa Ana and Victorville, Calif. While in California, he married Helen M. Sobolik, of Cresco, in May 1944. He flew fifty-one missions with the 15th Air Force, 450th Bomb Group, as a B-24 bombardier over Europe, surviving several hits to his planes and multiple forced or crash landings. For this and later service, he was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon with five bronze stars, two unit citations, the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Distinguished Flying Cross, the latter "for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy."


After World War II, Tom and Helen moved back to Cresco, where Tom worked as a plumber and volunteered for the Cresco Fire Department until he was recalled into the US Air Force for the Korean Conflict, where he was a bombardier on a B-29 crew based in Japan. Deciding to stay in the military, the couple lived at multiple Air Force bases around the country while he served as an electronic countermeasures (ECM) officer on various crews, and later as coordinator of civilian aircraft during the Cuban Missile Crisis, part of an airbase reorganization team, and finally as commander of the office in charge of the Air Force nuclear control codes.

Tom and Helen both retired in 1969 and returned to live in Cresco, building a house along the Upper Iowa River in Florenceville and then the "round" house in town. He also built or re-built several other houses around Cresco, built grandfather clocks for many local people, and created beautiful walnut furniture that Helen designed.

Tom served on the Cresco City Council, and was a long-time member of the VFW, the American Legion, the Cresco Country Club, and Notre Dame (Assumption) parish. The couple also spent twenty-five winters in Tucson, Ariz.

Tom is survived by his daughter: Amy S. Bouska, of Cresco; his brother: Francis (Bus) Bouska of Ocala, Fla.; four nieces: Kay Eckerman, Terry Barco, Carolen Bailey, and Barbara Stone; and a nephew: David Billmyer.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Helen M. Bouska; his parents; his sisters: Wilma Weinkauf and Rose Billmyer; and a niece: Linda Dolan.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Melba E. Robinson of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment was in the Saude Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Melba, 97, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2012 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco, after a brief stay.

Melba Evelyn Robinson was born Sept. 13, 1914 on a farm in rural Chickasaw County, Iowa, the daughter of Hannah (Natvig) and Theodore Vaala. She attended rural schools and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1932. With Normal Training Prep, she taught at Chickasaw County One Room Schoolhouses from 1932 to 1938.


On Nov. 1, 1938 she married Alfred H. "Fritz" Robinson at the Saude Lutheran Church. They worked together in the dairy business in New Hampton and Jefferson. After Fritz's death in 1955, she enrolled at the Iowa State Teachers College for two years and also did student teaching at the Iowa State Teachers College campus school. She was hired as a second grade teacher at Cresco Community Schools where she taught from 1957 to 1981. She enjoyed her students and many student-teachers from Luther, Iowa, UNI and Iowa State.

Melba was a member of CQ (PEO), Clio Club, Loafers Club (New Hampton), Delta Kappa Gamma, and church circles. She enjoyed traveling to Norway, Hawaii and Mexico.

Melba is survived by one daughter: Marcia A. (Ralph) Congdon of Davenport; two grandsons: Craig R. Congdon of Denver, Colo. and Todd M. Congdon of Bettendorf; compassionate caregiver: Jean Eldridge of Cresco; and nephews, niece, grandnephew and grandnieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Orin and Harris Vaala; and two sisters: Gladys Vaala and Lillian (Dave) Henry.

Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church (Cresco), Saude Lutheran Cemetery Fund or Dollars for Scholars.

Luella, 99, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.


Luella Burnikel was born Nov. 18, 1912 in Cresco, the daughter of Carl and Rose (Riehle) Herold.

On June 19, 1935 she married John Burnikel at Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. John preceded Luella in death in 1977. Luella enjoyed spending time tending her garden, embroidery, and knitting dish cloths for family and friends. She took joy in putting on her fishing hat, grabbing her pole, some worms, and teaching her children and grandchildren how to fish. Luella liked to keep fishing simple, just a hook and a worm and great company. She was always ready to bet 25 cents on the first fish caught, the most, and biggest fish. She spent many hours putting puzzles together. She adored her grandchildren, and was eager to play the dice game Ziltch with them.

Luella is survived by her sons: Edward (Geraldine "Geri") of Lime Springs, Harold "Butch" (Dorene) of Lime Springs, Richard (Barbara) of Green Bay, Wis., and Dale (Connie) of Ridgeway; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; her brothers and sisters: Elmore (Peggy) Herold of Waterloo, Lillian Daughenbaugh of Downey, Calif., and Edward Herold of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her daughter: Lorraine in infancy; her grandson: Mark Burnikel of Green Bay, Wis.; and five brothers and sisters.



Cecilia Rolfes, 82

MARION - A Funeral Mass for Cecilia F. Rolfes of Marion will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

A rosary was recited at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at the Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by the members of the Knights of Columbus. Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home where a vigil service was held at 7 p.m.

Cecilia, 82, died peacefully Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at her home surrounded by her loving husband, Elmer, and her family.

Cecilia Frances Rolfes was born May 18, 1929, the youngest daughter of Frank A. and Mary L. (Sindelar) Stika. She grew up on a farm in Howard County, Iowa, enjoying all that farm life had to offer, including helping with chores and driving a tractor during the harvest seasons. In 1947, Cecilia graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin. She attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, earned a teaching degree, and taught in country schools in Howard County for several years.


On her 24th birthday, May 18, 1953, she married Elmer Rolfes at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They lived in Baltimore, Md. and Norfolk, Va. while Elmer served in the US Navy. Marion, Iowa has since been their home for over fifty years.

Cecilia had many artistic talents. She made and decorated beautiful birthday cakes for family and friends, and worked at the Hy-Vee Bakery as a cake decorator. She was a good seamstress and homemaker, and loved yellow roses, music, and holidays with family and friends. Being

of Czech descent, she baked delicious kolaches. She had a deeply rooted faith in Jesus and Mary, and in angels. Upon entering her home, beautiful angels were on display everywhere.

Cecilia is survived by her husband, Elmer; four children: Michael (Sue) of Cedar Rapids, Kevin of Redmond, Washington, Geralyn (David) Lloyd of Burlington, and Jay (Lynn) of Bettendorf; and four grandchildren: Christina Rolfes of Cedar Rapids, Andrew Lloyd of Austin, Texas, Carmen Lloyd of Minneapolis, Minn. and Hannah Lloyd of Madison, Wis.; two step-grandchildren: Melissa and Justin (Megan) Welsh; one sister: Lillian Rolfes of Calmar; two sisters-in-law: Emma Rolfes of Keystone, Iowa and Marie Van Houten of Abilene, Texas; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters: Emma (Stika) Pecinovsky, Elizabeth (Stika) Pecinovsky-Marhoul, Helen (Stika) Pecinovsky and Edith (Stika) Vsetecka-Loberg; and one brother: Edward Stika; her brothers and sister-in-laws: Oswald and Victoria Kout, Harold and Mildred Quirk, John and Christine Rolfes, Arthur and Leo Rolfes, James, William G. and Leo Pecinovsky Sr., James Vsetecka, Tony Marhoul, Carol Loberg and Phil Van Houten; and many other relatives and friends.

DECORAH - Funeral services for Kelly D. Lang of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in Decorah with Pastor Mark Kvale officiating. Organist was Paul Bruvold and soloist was Paul Casterton. Hymns sung were: "Amazing Grace", "How Great Thou Art", "On Eagle's Wings" and "Eternal Father, Strong to Save." Honorary pallbearers were: Dustin Bongiovanni, Dakota Wilson, Blake Hackman, Aleah Hackman, and all of Lang's Dairy employees. Pallbearers were: Mark Theis, Justin Theis, Chad Theis, Jason Theis, Bryan Theis, Dustin Bongiovanni, Nathan Boyle, and Brady Bakken. Interment was in Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah with military rites by Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977, Bernatz-Symonds Am. Legion Post #163, Hamre-Giesen DAV Chapter #8 and AmVets Post #96.

Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah handled the arrangements.

Kelly, 65, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.

Kelly Dean Lang was born on Jan. 29, 1947, the son of Forrest and Iva Nell (Ginapp) Lang in Chicago, Ill. At the age of 14, Kelly started working for his father at Lang's Dairy. Kelly graduated from Decorah High School in 1965.


On April 16, 1966 he married Susan Bakken at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco. He served in the US Navy from June 9, 1966 to May 5, 1968, when he was honorably discharged. Kelly served in the Navy Sea Bees in Vietnam. On March 1, 1976, Kelly bought Lang's Dairy Equipment, in partnership with Bruce Hanson. He was proud of his business, where he had a strong work ethic and was conscious of his customers.

Kelly's interests include horses and watching horse races, NASCAR racing, camping with his family and spending time with his friends at "Your Place." He also enjoyed inventing and tinkering in his shop; always trying to find a way to make things easier. But above all, Kelly loved spending time and being with his grandchildren. Kelly was a member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees and the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977.

Kelly is survived by his wife, Susie of Decorah; three children: Kim (George) Wilson of Hamilton, N.J., Jim (special friend, Julie Madsen) Lang of Decorah, and Dede (J.R.) Hackman of Lawler; four grandchildren: Dustin Bongiovanni, Dakota Wilson, Blake Hackman and Aleah Hackman; his mother: Iva Nell Lang of Decorah; one brother: Scott Lang of Decorah; one sister: Charlene (Rick) Theis of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; one aunt: Judy (Terry) Fields of Deerwood, Minn.; his mother-in-law: Darleen Bakken of Cresco; four sisters-in-law: Linda Wright of Cresco, Judy (Danny) Biwer of Elma, Rhonda (Bill) Boyle of Elma, and Patty (Daryl) Lindsley of Destin, Fla.; one brother-in-law: Arnie (Connie) Bakken of Lime Springs; along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Kelly was preceded in death by his father: Forrest Lang on Nov. 3, 1986; his father-in-law: Orvin Bakken on Sept. 3, 1991; his grandparents: Eldo and Hazel Lang and Edwin and Agnes Ginapp.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Doris L. McIntire of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Church in Cresco. It was Doris's wishes to be cremated and her remains laid to rest at a later date at Kendallville-Eddy Cemetery in rural Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Doris, 84, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2012 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.

Doris Lou McIntire was born on June 20, 1927 on a farm near Cresco, the daughter of Harry and Mattie McIntire. The family moved to Cresco and that is where Doris attended grade school and high school. She attended and graduated from Iowa State Teacher's College, now known as UNI. In 1950 she began her working career at Northwest Airlines from which she retired in 1982. She moved back to Cresco and for a couple of years ran a furniture finishing business, then retired again. She then began to enjoy the pleasures of retirement.

She was preceded in death by her mother; her father; and her brother: Jim, who was killed in WWII.



Leo Pecinovsky, 74

PROTIVIN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Leo L. Pecinovsky of Protivin will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Father Nick March officiating. Interment will be held in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16, with a Scripture Service at 5 p.m. at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Protivin. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Leo, 74, died peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. on Saturday Feb. 11, 2012 with his family nearby. He was a cancer survivor of 16 years and successfully fought many other illnesses over the years with courage and a love of life.

Leo Louis Pecinovsky was born Oct. 9, 1937 at home in Howard County, the son of Leo A Pecinovsky and Elizabeth (Stika). He attended school at Oregon #6, Holy Trinity Grade School and graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin in 1956. Leo served in the United States Army from January 1961 to January 1963. While in the Army he was Specialist 5th Class serving at Fort Riley Kansas in the Irwin Army Hospital as a pharmacist aide. He was a life time member of Holy Trinity Church, America Legion POST 605 and volunteer member of the Protivin Fire Department.
On June 4, 1962 he married Elmaire (Wagner) at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin. They made their home in Protivin. Leo worked at the Boeke Drug Store in Cresco, Fencil Oil Company of Protivin and the Coast to Coast Hardware Store in Cresco before he had to retire early due to a disability.

He enjoyed fishing and in particular turtle fishing with his friends. He was a loyal fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins. When his favorite teams were not playing he enjoyed watching other sport programs and playing cards. He enjoyed gardening and was famous for his large potato patch next to the house.

Leo faithfully tracked the exploits of his children and grandchildren and they made countless phone calls to keep him updated. He had a lot of difficulty getting around but pushed himself to attend at least once a year. He was called the gum grandpa because whenever his grandchildren visited he gave them a stick of gum.

He is survived by his wife, Elmarie; their children: Allen (Janel) Pecinovsky of Lewiston, Minn. and their children Adam, Sarah and Cody, Gary (Micki) Pecinovsky and their children Kristy and Clint of Protivin and Nancy Hagensick and her children Andrew, Nicholas and Thomas Leo of Springville, Iowa; his brother: Edmund (Carolyn) of Roseville, Calif.; and sister: Monica (Calvin) Leeps of Flint, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters: Rita and Giovanni.

FORT ATKINSON - A Mass of Christian Burial for Leo C. Kriener of Fort Atkinson was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas with Rev. Nick March officiating. Organist was Kathy Meyer, pianist was Kristina Nienhaus, soloist was Jared Ashleigh Kriener, cantor was Lynette Wheeler, along with the St. Luke's choir. Songs sung were: "Take My Hands", "We Come to Your Feast", "Open My Eyes", "Eternal Father, Strong to Save", "Here I Am, Lord", "Peace is Flowing Like a River", "The Summons", and "Lead Me Lord". Lector was David Blocker, cross bearer was Grace Blocker, mass servers were: Kyle Langreck and Brad Kriener, and offeratory gifts were carried by his grandchildren. Eucharistic ministers were: Ann Herold, Dennis Rausch and Jim Kriener. Pallbearers were: Dave Busta, Kevin Mracek, Don Kriener, Marty Kriener, Loren Kriener, Peter Kriener, Jr., Kurt Kriener and Matt Herold. Interment was in St. Luke's Catholic Cemetery in St. Lucas.

Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson handled the arrangements.

Leo, 77, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012 at his home.

Leo Chris Kriener was born on May 4, 1934 on the family farm near Fort Atkinson, the son of Peter and Mary (Kuennen) Kriener. Leo attended St. Luke's Catholic School in St. Lucas, and graduated in 1952. He served in the US Army from 1957-59. When he returned home he worked at Oliver in Charles City.


On Aug. 4, 1962, he married Rosemary Herold at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson. They farmed near Fort Atkinson, where Leo was actively engaged in farming until his death. Leo had a good sense of humor and enjoyed visiting with young farmers in the area; providing them with "words of wisdom".

Leo enjoyed bowling, golfing, watching the farm markets and was an avid Cardinal and Packer fan. He was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of the Foresters and the Huber-Steffes American Legion Post#672.

Leo is survived by his wife: Rosemary Kriener of Fort Atkinson; six children: Anne (David) Blocker of Waukon, Evie (Myron) Milbrandt of Waucoma, Linda Jones of Fort Worth, Texas, Rich (Nancy) Kriener of New Hampton, Arnold Kriener of Ossian, and Joe (Kristin) Kriener of Ossian; 18 grandchildren: Katie, Marty and Grace Blocker; Cassie and Nolan Milbrandt; Xavier, Markus and Trinton Jones; Ryan, Mikia and Tyler Kriener; Kyleigh, Jared Ashleigh, Allanda and Madison Kriener; and Trey, Eric and Clara Kriener; two sisters: Anita Busta of Fort Atkinson and Eleanor Mracek of Protivin; five brothers: Linus Kriener of New Hampton, Peter (Diane) Kriener, Jerome (Madonna) Kriener and Conrad (Kathleen) Kriener, all of Fort Atkinson, and Herman (Greta) Kriener of Spillville; sisters-in-law: Pauline Kriener of New Hampton, Valeria Herold, Anastasia Kriener and Anita Herold, all of Fort Atkinson; along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents: Peter and Mary (Kuennen) Kriener; four brothers: Cyril Kriener in 1998, Francis Kriener in 1999, Ignatius Kriener in 2002 and Lawrence Kriener in infancy in 1945; sisters and brothers-in-law: Ambrose and Evelyn Herold, Reuben Mracek, Cletus Herold, and Godlove Busta.

CRESCO - Memorial services for Allen W. Henry of Cresco were held at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco with Leroy Webb officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.

Allen, 69, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2012 at his home.

Allen W. Henry was born Jan. 20, 1943 on the family farm in Howard County, the son of Richard and Rose (Magee) Henry. Allen attended Notre Dame Catholic High School, and graduated from Crestwood High School in 1962. After high school, he enlisted into the United States Army. During his time in the military he worked as a Law Clerk. Allen was a truck driver for Mehmert Tiling for several years.

He enjoyed firing his guns at the shooting range, watching TV, and reading. On Sundays, he looked forward to a heated game of 500 with his sister Shirley, niece Jessie, and great niece Laken.


Allen is survived by his brothers: Sonny of Burr Oak, Virgil (Joan) of Ridgeway, Howard (Sandy) of Arizona, Arden of Rochester, Minn., Arnie (Vicki) of Dubuque, Larry (Wendy) of Decorah, Terry "Buck" (Jane) of Cresco, Gary (Sherry) of Cresco, and Randy (Brenda) of Oran, Iowa; his sisters: Shirley Weber and Kathy Schmitt both of Cresco; his special niece and great niece Jessie and Laken Lienhard of Cresco; several other nieces and nephews; and his cat, Baby.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister: Joann Bertling.

CRESCO - A Mass of Remembrance for Patrick "Pat" Whalen of Cresco was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Pat, 80, died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at his home.

Patrick Whalen was born March 4, 1931 in Plymouth Rock, coldwater area, Iowa to Urban and Blanche (Demers) Whalen.


On Sept. 30, 1950 he married Alice May Burgess. Pat served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict from December 1951 until December 1953, and received the Purple Heart for his service. In his younger days, Pat worked as a part-time farmer and for the railroad. He then began working as a carpenter.

Pat enjoyed fishing, boating, playing cards, and watching Westerns on TV. He loved spending time with his family and walking his little dog Lily.

Pat is survived by a son: Alan (Sherry) Whalen of Kasson, Minn.; daughters: Myrna Posley of Rochester, Minn. and Beverly (Duane) Massman of Leland, Iowa; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister: Ruth Carolan of Austin, Minn.; and a brother: Oliver Whalen of Rose Creek, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; a son: Gaylord; his parents; brothers: Leonard, Leslie, Floyd, and Alois; and sisters: Gladys, Cecilia, and Alethea.

OSAGE - Memorial services for Helen A. Jellum of Osage were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage. Inurnment was held in Osage Cemetery.

Helen, 95, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012 at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Helen A. Jellum was born March 28, 1916 in Turtle Lake, N.D., the daughter of Iver and Minnie (Stinson) Skogsmark.

CRESCO - Lewis E. White, 61, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 at Eagle Point Nursing Rehabilitation Center in Clinton. It was Lewis' wishes to be cremated with a private memorial service.

Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is handling the arrangements.

Lewis Eugene White was born March 12, 1950 in Rochelle, Ill. He enlisted in the Army and served from Jan. 9, 1968 to Dec. 23, 1970.

On April 2, 1990 he married Wanda Scofield. They made their home in Cresco, coming from Freeport, Ill.


He enjoyed his friends that have become family to him in Cresco. He loved working at The County Store and enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning, and working with wood. He had a passion for collecting things. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by a daughter: Tammy (Rob) Druien of Byron Ill., a son: Robert White of Cresco; grandchildren: Mitchell Kuczynski, Becca Druien, Amanda Druien, Katie Druien, and Nick Druien of Byron, Ill.; sister: Erlene Latour of Rochelle, Ill.: and Norton his cat and also his three birds.

Lewis was preceded in death by his father: Charles White and mother: Hilda Hager.

LA CROSSE, WI - Funeral services for Leo W. Kraft of La Crosse, Wis., formerly of Riceville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2012 at the Saratoga Presbyterian Church in Saratoga. Interment will be held in the Saratoga Cemetery in Saratoga.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 4 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.

Leo, 81, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012 at the Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse, Wis.

Leo W. Kraft was born on May 3, 1930 in Lake City, Iowa, the son of Walter and Genevieve (Bowles) Kraft. He graduated from Lake City High School in 1948. He served his country in the United States Army by enlisting in 1948 and transferring to the Army Reserves in 1949 until he was honorably discharged in 1954.

On Aug. 6, 1950 he married Zoan Richardson in Lake City. They farmed in Lake City and Dows until 1960 when they moved to Howard County, Iowa, where he continued farming. Through the years he also worked for Farm Service at Davis Corners, Winneshiek Co-op and was a school bus driver.

Leo was a member of the Saratoga Presbyterian Church, where he served in various positions throughout the years. Leo enjoyed gardening, tending to his flowers, strawberries and raspberries. He also enjoyed traveling to Texas with his wife Zoan, traveling there for 15 years.

He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

LIME SPRINGS - Funeral services for Walter Wm. Harwood will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the Lime Springs United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Interment will be held Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs in the spring time.

Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 1 and also one hour prior to services at the church.

Walter, 93, died Saturday Feb. 25, 2012 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco. He suffered a stroke in August 2010 and he passed away from complications of more recent strokes.

Walter Wm. Harwood was born Jan. 29, 1919 in Griggs, Okla., the son of Robert and Effie (Coulson) Harwood. His family moved back to the Clinton, Mo., after one year. Walter at age 18 years old moved to Goldfield, Iowa, and worked as a farm hand. He was drafted into the Army in 1941 during WWII and served at Fort Miles, Del. for four years, five months and 18 days.


After the war, he returned to Iowa and married Harriet Eleanora Gist. The couple lived in Goldfield, moving to Corwith, Iowa in 1949 before purchasing a 320 acre farm in Lime Springs in 1958. After retiring from farming in 1979, the couple built a home in Lime Springs where Walter resided until his stroke. They spent 14 winters in their home in Donna, Texas until 1999.

Walter continued gardening with the produce going to the Lime Springs residents. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing for bullheads, deer hunting, visiting, plus letter writing to many far away family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter: Janet Lea (David) Farnsworth of Cresco; son: Everett (Gail) Harwood of Glen Allen, Va.; five grandchildren: Cody, Casey, Trevor Harwood; Brenda Lea (Brad) Talbert; Lori Ann (Darrin) Cunningham; four great-grandchildren; 12 nephews and nieces of Missouri; plus many more family members and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanora; a son: David; his parents; and his sister: Roxie Blackaby.

Upon Walter's request, all undesignated memorials will go to the Shiloh Cemetery in Missouri, where his parents are buried in a private church cemetery. There is also a new winter garden going in at the Cresco Care Center in his memory, where Walter resided for the past year and a half.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Jane Miller of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at the Cresco Community Chapel in Cresco. Inurnment will be held in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco at a later date.

Jane, 84, died Wednesday Feb. 22, 2012 surrounded by her family.

Mary Jane Irene Florence Appel was born Nov. 21, 1927 at the family home in Monona, the third child of Will and Emma (Kuthe) Appel. Jane received her education at country schools at Kendallville and Riceville, high school in Ridgeway, and graduated in 1946 from Cresco High School. Following graduation, Jane worked in a factory and did laundry services in Peoria, Ill., then moved back to Cresco and worked at Eaton's Dairy.

On March 21, 1951, she married Robert K. Miller at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco.


Jane's favorite pastimes in life were cooking for her family, raising a huge garden with her husband Bob, selling vegetables, sewing, and caring for her three grandchildren. Jane was a lifetime member of the 1st Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for 37 years to the two and three year olds. She was also a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan. She and Bob baked many varieties of cookies at Christmas time and together with their grandchildren, delivered them to friends and shut-ins in the area. Jane also passed her love of cooking and gardening on to her three grandchildren who now do things the way Grandma Jane did it.

Jane is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bob; her daughter: Wendie (Ken) Solomon of Cresco; a son: Dean (Fran) Miller of Cresco; three grandchildren: Erin Solomon of Onalaska, Wis., Jason (Ann) Miller of Cresco, and Stacy (James) Tumpach of Cottage Grove, Wis.; four great-grandchildren: Carson Miller, Elijah Tumpach, Isabelle Tumpach, and Carly Miller; her beloved dog: Maggie; a sister: Arlene Rue of Ridgeway; a sister-in-law: Agnes Anderson of Northwood; as well as nieces and nephews.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; her sister: Lorene Templeton; a brother: Reuben Appel; and in-laws: Ray and Irene Miller.
