Melita Klein, 38

CRESCO - A Celebration of Life for Melita I. Klein of Cresco was held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, 2012 at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Stacey Nalean - Carlson officiating. Kathy Tollefsrud was the organist and Cindy Schissel the soloist. Songs sung were "What a Friend we have in Jesus", "Mine Eyes have Seen the Glory", "Shall We Gather at the River", and "Amazing Grace", "If I Die Young", "The Lord's Prayer", "I Love to Tell the Story", "Just a Closer Walk with Thee", "Old Rugged Cross." Honorary pallbearers were Melita's first cousins. Pallbearers were: Dustin Seldon, Chris Vang, Milton Quam, Dale Linnane, Ricky Stadlet, and Shaun Linnane.

Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah handled the arrangements.

Melita, 38, died Monday, June 25, 2012 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

Melita Irene Klein was born July 18, 1973, in Decorah, the daughter of Roger and Louise (Linnane) Quam. She was baptized on Aug.9, 1973 at Madison Lutheran Church and confirmed on Oct. 25, 1987 at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church. Melita graduated from the GED Program at NICC in 2002. Melita worked as a mechanic, helping to rebuild old cars, was a tractor operator for JB Holland, bartended at Country View Golf Course and at Cowboys and worked as an inspector at CamCar in Decorah.

She loved to ride horses and loved all animals, including birds, dogs, and cats. She always kept busy, tending to her garden; where she could always get anything to grow. Melita loved classical music, old movies, poetry, and going fishing. She enjoyed exploring all kinds of faiths, along with believing in healing stones. Melita was a very unique person, loving life and was one of a kind.

Melita is survived by her parents: Roger and Louise Quam of Decorah; two sisters: Melissa (David) O'Brien of Gaithersburg, Md. and Melanie Cotton of Decorah; one brother: Roger Quam, Jr. of Decorah; nieces and nephews: Declan O'Brien, Andrea Quam, Ariana Kampschroer, Hudson Quam, Olivia and Kendal Quam; two special step-children: Cyndal and Cole Klein of Cresco; along with several aunts, uncles and cousins; a special friend: Jeanette (Chris) Cotant, and their children: Kendall, Karissa and Katrina.

Melita was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents: Patrick and Irene (McKenna) Linnane; and paternal grandparents: Milford and Elsie (Nessett) Quam.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be given to the Cancer-Leukemia Research Team at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA 52242.


 

Eva Foote, 94

LIME SPRINGS - A memorial service for Eva M. Foote of Lime Springs was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the Lime Springs United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Interment was held in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.

Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Eva, 94, died Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis.

Eva May Foote was born Oct. 17, 1917, in Indiana the daughter of Alfred and Nettie (Shuey) Nicoll. Her mother passed away at a young age and was raised by her grandparents. She graduated from high school in 1935.

On February 20, 1937, she married Floyd Foote in Logansport, Ind. They farmed their entire lives until 1978. They wintered in Texas and returned to the family farm to live every summer until entering the Cresco Care Center in September of 2011.

She enjoyed playing pool, including her time playing for the Senior Citizen Olympics of the Valley in Texas. She also enjoyed making craft items and even recently won four blue ribbons at the Howard County Fair for her entries.

She is survived by her husband Floyd; two daughters: Elinor Taylor of Ionia, Iowa and Connie (Roger) Ihkre of Elgin, Minn.; two sons: Roger (Donna) of Lime Springs and David of Tyler, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren with one more on the way; two brothers: Alfred Nicoll of Stewartville, Minn. and Don Nicoll of Lucerne, Ind.; a sister: Vivian Roller of Wabash, Ind.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; two sisters; a son-in-law: Rod Taylor; and a daughter-in-law: Carol.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Lime Springs United Methodist Church.


Marcella Vsetecka, 93

DECORAH - Mass of Christian Burial for Marcella M. Vsetecka of Decorah will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah with the Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Mary Beth Bouska will be the organist and Cindy Schissel the Cantor. Songs to be sung will be "Here I Am, Lord", "Prayer of St. Francis", "Amazing Grace", and "How Great Thou Art". Mass servers are Emily Luzum, and Anna and Kelly Langreck. Lector is Quentin Vsetecka, Offertory giftbearers are Ray and Alvin Vsetecka, and eucharistic minister is Linda Luzum. Pallbearers are: Jim Vsetecka, Rodney Vsetecka, Leon Vsetecka, Dave Vsetecka, Jeff Vsetecka, and Chris Malek. Interment will be held in St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery in Decorah.

Marcella, 93, died Sunday, July 1, 2012 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Marcella Mary Vsetecka was born Nov. 21, 1918, on the family farm in Jackson Township, near Jackson Junction, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Annastasia (Klima) Vsetecka. Marcella was baptized and confirmed at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. She received her grade school education at School District #7 south of her home. She attended parochial school at St. Wenceslaus School. She grew up on the family farm. Early on she went to live and work in Decorah, Cresco, Minneapolis and Waterloo. In 1946, she came back and settled in Decorah.

Throughout her lifetime she was employed as a homemaker, waitress, dietary aide, dental assistant, and lastly a nurse's aide. After retirement, Marcella and her sister, Gertrude became caregivers for their parents and several other family members. They enjoyed traveling together on occasion. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening, and her yard was her pride and joy. Her hobbies were many, and the latest genealogy, doing the family tree. She also loved entertaining her family and taking them to Phelps Park for picnics. Marcella was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church.

Marcella is survived by her two brothers: Alvin (Patricia) Vsetecka of Lawler and Raphael "Ray" (Delores) Vsetecka of Cresco; one sister-in-law: Phyllis Vsetecka of Lawler; along with many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters: Gertrude Vsetecka, Elsie (Leonard) Chihak, and Margaret (Leonard) Panos; and four brothers: Frank Vsetecka, Cletus (Wilma) Vsetecka, James (Edith) Vsetecka and Marceline in infancy.

Tillie Webster, 92

INDEPENDENCE - A memorial service for Tillie R. Webster of Independence will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Little Turkey, Iowa.

Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory is handling the arrangements.

Tillie, 92, died Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the West Village Care Center in Independence.

Tillie R. Webster was born July 2, 1920, near Little Turkey, the daughter of Peter and Eleanor (Cosk) Kubik.

She was married Robert O. Webster in 1939. They made their home in Cresco. Mr. Webster died on Oct. 6, 1969. In 1976 Tillie moved to Independence, Iowa.

She loved her family especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed drawing, crafting, and embroidering.

She is survived by four children: Mary E. Luke of Cedar Rapids, Elizabeth (Ron) Miller of Independence, Terry (Wendy) Webster of Independence, and Don Webster of Elgin, Iowa; 27 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister: Cecelia Jarosh of Cresco.

Tillie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; three sons: Robert, Gary and Tom Webster; her parents; two brothers: Clarence and Peter Kubik; and a sister: Mayme Cahill.

Gene Strike, 69

CHESTER - Gene L. Strike, 69, passed away at his home in Chester on Monday, June 25, 2012. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, Iowa Cremation in Cedar Rapids is handling the arrangements.

Gene Lewis Strike was born on Aug. 15, 1942, in Cresco the son of Lewis and Angeline (Kurash) Strike. Gene graduated from Chester High School and then enlisted in the US Army from 1964 to 1966. Gene was very proud of his service to his country. After Gene was discharged from the Army he went to work at White Farm in Charles City and worked there for 32 years.

Gene is survived by his wife Judy A. Strike; son: Darrin Strike (Beth) of Sheffield; a daughter: Dawn Rozell (Steve) of Chaska, Minn.; two granddaughters: Catherine and McKenna Strike of Sheffield; a sister: Joyce Englehardt of California; and brothers: Lyle Strike and David Strike, both of LeRoy, Minn.

Gene was preceded in death by his mother and father; sisters: Sharon and Bernice; and a brother: Dennis.


Stephen DeWalle, 62

WINTER HAVEN, FL - Stephen O. DeWalle, 62, of Winter Haven, Fla., formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at Winter Haven Hospital. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Stephen O. DeWalle was born on Oct. 14, 1949, in Cresco. He graduated from Malcolm Price Lab School in Cedar Falls and from Kirkwood Community College. He also attended Southwestern Community College in Creston, where he studied photography and film production. Steve then worked in Cedar Rapids for Lippisch Design and Type II Design for several years. In 1992, he moved to Columbus, Ind., and then to Winter Haven in 2001.

He was a Civil War enthusiast and enjoyed watching movies and reading history books and novels.

Stephen is survived by his children: Shane (Rachel) DeWalle of Marion and Sondra (Ryan) Teslik of Amana; grandchildren: Madden DeWalle, Selina Teslik and Elijah Teslik; sister: Mary Ann (John) Hudecek of Columbus, Ind.; brothers: David DeWalle of Marion and Thomas (Wendy Toyama) DeWalle of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; several nephews, nieces and cousins; and his first wife, Angela (Prescott) DeWalle of Amana.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Orvin and Helen DeWalle; his second wife, Debra (Croucher) DeWalle; a sister: Marlene Riha; and a nephew: Elliott DeWalle.

Walter Haynes, 92

CRESCO - A Celebration of Life for Walter M. Haynes of Cresco was held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 14 at Immanual Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment was held in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Walter, 92, died Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Walter M. Haynes was born May 7, 1920 in Sioux Falls, S.D. His parents were Guy and Margaret Haynes of Waterloo.

On Dec. 8, 1943, he married Ruth M. Rewoldt in Frederika, Iowa, while on leave. After serving in the U.S. Army in WW II, he graduated from Iowa State Teachers College. He started his life long career in education, teaching Industrial Arts, Math and Science at Keystone and then Cedar Falls, Iowa. After receiving his masters degree from UNI, he was hired as Junior High Principal at Howard Winneshiek Community Schools in 1960. He retired in 1983.

He enjoyed his family, reading, playing cards, fishing and popcorn.

He is survived by his son: Allan (Barbara) of Tipton; his daughter: Deb (Steve) Hackman of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren: Scott (Kristin) Hackman of Orangevale, Calif.; Kayla (Chad) Schumacher of Fairbanks, Alaska; Rachel (Jeff) Thomas of Temple, Texas; Amanda (Isaac) Masoner of Temple, Texas; four great-grandchildren: Paige and Grant Hackman; Peaceful and Jude Masoner; two sisters-in-law: Arlene Moeller of Cloverdale, Calif.; and Evelyn Rewoldt of Cedar Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Ruth, in 2010; a grandson: Matthew Hackman; brothers-in-law: Leo and Elston Rewoldt, Duane Moeller, Leo Buckendahl and Gerald Fox; and one sister-in-law: Marcille Fox.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for a Crestwood student scholarship.

Raphael Ferrie, 79

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial followed by Military Rites for Raphael "Ray" L. Ferrie of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony, Minn. Honorary pallbearers were Russell, Shaun and Robert Ferrie, Dallas Bestor and Harold Rosendahl. Pallbearers were Peyton, Austin, Dustin, Jason and Seth Ferrie and Michael Dieter. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ray, 79, died Tuesday morning, July 17, 2012 at his home surrounded by his wife and children.

Raphael Louis Ferrie was born Aug. 27, 1932, in Cresco, the son of Raymond and Clara (Tupy) Ferrie. He enlisted in the Army on Nov. 6, 1952 and was sent to Korea. Ray served as a private in the 5th Army. He was honorably discharged on July 11, 1953, due to an ill father.

On August 10, 1954, he married Gladys Frana in Lourdes, Iowa. They moved into a farmhouse outside of Kendallville, Iowa. During their 58 years of marriage Ray never went to a barbershop as his wife Gladys always cut his hair. Ray kept busy farming, milking cows, and raising sheep and pigs. He was the seventh employee hired at Donaldson Company when it opened and retired from the position of Lead Man after 30 years. He worked for Winneshiek County Sanitation until retiring in May of 2012.

Ray was an avid coon hunter with his dogs, Tippy and Fritz. He also spent time as a member of the Cresco VFW and American Legion and a charter member of the Midwest Sad Iron Collectors Club. Ray enjoyed fishing, teaching his grandchildren to play card games, working in his garage and most of all spending time with his family and friends.

Ray is survived by his wife Gladys of Cresco; six children: Dean (Ann) Ferrie of Chester, Kenny (Carol) Ferrie of Mora, Minn., Kevin (Deb) Ferrie of Byron, Minn., Russell (Cindy Krause) Ferrie of Lourdes, Nancy (Kevin Fonley) Dieter of Cresco, Roger (Kari) Ferrie of Cresco; one sister; Connie (Dallas) Bestor of Cresco; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Ray was preceded in death by a daughter Amy; his parents; two brothers-in-law: Raymond Hayek and Joseph Stortz; mother and father-in-law: George and Cecelia Frana; a sister-in-law: Marie Mashek; and a great-granddaughter: Nadja Carr.

Frances Ione Barclay was born on Sept. 29, 1926 in Miller, South Dakota, the daughter of Grace (Dynes) and Arthur Logan Barclay.


Dora Eastman, 91

McINTIRE - Funeral services for Dora Jean Eastman of McIntire were held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2011 at the Riceville United Methodist Church in Riceville. Interment will be held in Wayne Cemetery, east of McIntire.

Dale Friedrich

GILBERT, AZ - Dale Friedrich passed away at his home in Gilbert, Ariz. on Saturday, July 21, 2012. A private service was held in Mesa.

Dale is survived by his wife: Ruth; son: Darwin and Cheryl Friedrich; daughter: Ranel and Rob Nickerson; daughter: Ronda Randolph; son: Dean Friedrich and special friend Karen Curtis; and grandchildren: Jeff and Lacy Randolph.

 


Arlene Hron

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Arlene V. Hron of Cresco was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Father Dennis Cahill officiating.

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco with a scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation continued for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Arlene, 63, died Friday, July 27, 2012 at Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Arlene V. Hron was born May 1, 1949, in Howard County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Caroline (Lukes) Pecinovsky.

On Feb. 24, 1968, she married Ronald Hron at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They made their residence in Cresco.

Arlene loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a familiar face in the stands cheering them on at ball games. Arlene was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church and their rosary society. She enjoyed listening to polka music, cooking, gardening, playing cards, and trying her luck gambling.

Arlene is survived by three children: Jeff (Julie) Hron of Grimes, Iowa, Doug (Kathy) Hron of Polk City, Iowa, and Rhonda (Maynard) Thompson of Cresco; four grandchildren: Carly Hron, Bryer, Trystin, and Brayden Thompson; her sisters: Evelyn Moriarty, Madonna Anderson both of Cedar Rapids, and Marlene Hron of Cresco; a step sister: Frances Hovorka of Cresco; and her faithful four legged companion, Brownie.

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald on January 7, 2008; her parents; and a brother: Wilmar Pecinovsky.
