Funeral services for Wilfred Bohr of Ridgeway were held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13 at the St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco.

The Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were: Dan and Leon Bohr, Matthew Storlie, Nicholas Bohr, Roger Timp, David Lechtenberg, Dale Ringeon, Alan Peter, and Tom Fye. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Wilfred, 70, died Saturday, March 10, 2001 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Wilfred John Bohr was born August 15, 1930 in Winneshiek County, near Ossian, the son of Anton and Mathilda (Hageman) Bohr. Wilfred was forever a farmer. After losing his own father at a very young age, he helped the family farm the home place.

On May 11, 1954 he married Arlene Timp at St. Aloysius Church in Calmar. They shared their early years farming near Ossian, then moved to the Ridgeway area in 1956, where they continued farming.

He was involved with his church, the Knights of Columbus, and had very strong ties in the farming community. He was a former director of the Winneshiek Co-op, spent many sale days at the Cresco Livestock Market. He enjoyed watching the Cubs and the Hawkeyes.

Survivors include his wife Arlene; one daughter: Debbie Storlie of Byron, MN; two sons: Dennis and Craig both of Ridgeway; seven grandchildren; three step grandchildren: one step great-grandson; three sisters: Viola Bohr of Decorah, Arlene Bohr of Darien, IL, and Jeanne Hageman of Decorah; and two brothers: Gerald of Cedar Rapids and Duane of Sylvania, GA.

Wilfred was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Linus.

Francis Walton

Funeral services for Francis Walton of Cresco were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 12 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with spring burial in the New Oregon Cemetery.

The Rev. Gary K. Lee, pastor of the First Lutheran Church in Cresco presided. Pallbearers were his sons-in-law: Pat McGee, Mike Heimer, Francis Monthy and grandsons: Don Youngblut, Jamie Prouty, and Francis Monthy Jr. Honorary pallbearers were: Melvin Ott, John Busta, Gary Murray, Merlin Kratz, Arnold Skoda, Richard Jirak, Emmett Borseth, George Milbrath, Lawrence Peters, Roger Halverson, Eldred Rethamel, and Gilbert Pecinovsky.

Francis, 75, died Thursday, March 8, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Francis E. Walton was born May 20, 1925 in Winneshiek County, near Cresco, the son of John and Vera (Burgess) Walton. He attended the rural school near his home and Cresco High School for two years. He later entered the U.S. Army, serving in Korea and the Phillippines. After his honorable discharge from the service, he was employed by Art Eischeid's Creamery and in 1949 was employed as a lineman for Hawkeye Tri-County REC in Cresco until retiring in 1987.

On August 5, 1950 he married Rita Hovey at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Francis enjoyed working outside, gardening, crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles.

Survivors include his wife Rita; two sons: David and Donald of Cresco; six daughters: Barbara Trouten of Nashville, TN, Linda Walton of Waterloo, Mary Lee Heimer of Rochester, MN, Julie Monthy and Becky McGee both of Cresco, and Susan Pierce of North Augusta, SC; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister: Emma Jean McGee of Waterloo.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson; and one brother: Robert.

Dan Quinn

Funeral services for Dan Quinn of McIntire were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 19 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville.

The Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Dan, 48, died Thursday, March 15, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN after an extended illness.

Dan J. Quinn was born August 16, 1952 at St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo, the only child of Bernard and Irene (Morse) Quinn. Dan attended Riceville Community Schools and after graduation, he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, MN. After graduating he was employed as a mechanic at A&H Motors. During this time, he also completed a degree in conservation. In 1975 he became the bus mechanic for the Riceville School System. Dan started driving semi trucks in 1980 traveling coast to coast. In 1982 he relocated to Santa Cruz, CA. At this time Dan was employed as shop manager for Waste Management. In 1992 he became manager of Chelone Truck Repair. He returned back to Iowa in 1997 due to failing health.

Dan married Etta Eastman of McIntire at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville. They were married from 1971 to 1996.

During Dan's time in California he raised bonsai trees.

Survivors include one son: Chad of LaCrosse, WI; and his mother: Irene Quinn of Riceville.

Dan was preceded in death by his father Bernard in 1987; and his grandparents.

Memorial services for Mark Belschner of Frankfort, KY were held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 at the Harrod Brothers Memorial Chapel.

Mark, 49, died Thursday, March 22, 2001 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, KY.

Mark J. Belschner was the son of Wayne J. and Eleanor N. (Stromsodt) Belschner.

A native of Iowa, he was a production supervisor, retired from Advanced Drainage Systems, Versailles, KY. He attended the Lutheran church.

Survivors include his wife, Susan M. Voyek of Frankfort; one daughter: Amy Folker of Frankfort; and one grandson.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents.

Ray Grimm

Funeral services for Ray Grimm of Cresco were held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 23 at the St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco.

Ray, 72, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco of Lewy Body Disease.

Raphael John Grimm was born June 12, 1928 the son of Fred and Rose (Kapler) Grimm. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco. He attended St. Joseph's School until the eighth grade and graduated from Cresco High School in 1947. Following high school, he attended a business school in Milwaukee, WI. After his education, he began working as a photostat operator for Rath Packing Co. He was inducted into the armed forces of the United States on March 6, 1951, serving for two years and being discharged on March 6, 1953. Following his service period, he worked for a short time, and then became a brother in the religious life. Later his career focused as a credit manager for St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ. He returned to Cresco in 1987.

On September 16, 1989 he married Doris Haskovec at St. Joseph's Catholic church by the Rev. Roger R. Rethamel. They made their home in Cresco where Ray became active in church activities, especially RCIA, in which Ray and Doris participated in for over 10 years.

Ray liked to travel and enjoyed the arts.

Survivors include his wife Doris; two step daughters: Patricia Portee of Elma and Karen Bernabe of Lindenhurst, IL; four step grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; one brother: Sylvester; and one sister: Arletta Rose, both of Cresco.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; one step daughter: Denise Haskovec; three brothers: Joseph, George, and Bernard; and four sisters: Agnes and Helen Grimm, Wilma Tupy and Cecelia Scanlon.

Everett Hughes

Funeral services for Everett Hughes of Riceville were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville.

The Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville. Pallbearers were: Ed Ackerman, Dan Hughes, Ron Mayer, Ron Charlson, Albert Winkles, and Harlan Goltz. Honorary pallbearers were: Bud Kulow, Bill Eastman, John Koenigs and Greg Conger. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Everett, 62, died Sunday, March 18, 2001 in Austin, MN after suffering a heart attack.

Everett Raymond Hughes was born June 28, 1938 at Riceville, the son of Norbert and Theresa (Wettstein) Hughes. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mel's Catholic Church in McIntire and graduated from the McIntire High School.

In 1959, he married JoAnn Francis at St. Patrick's Church in LeRoy, MN. They set up farming in the McIntire area. Everett started raising pure bred hogs and became a breeder of Poland China hogs. Everett went into trucking, which is what he was doing at the present time.

He was a former member of the Poland China Association, a former member of St. Mel's Catholic Church and a present member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Riceville.

Survivors include two daughters: Lori Hall of Hayfield, MN and Debbie Hughes of McIntire; one son: Dan of Fremont; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister: Elaine Freerksen of LeRoy, MN.

Everett was preceded in death by his parents.

R.J. Peckham

R.J. Peckham died on Tuesday, January 23, 2001.

R.J. Peckham was born November 30, 1917, in Cresco, the son of Jennie Amanda and Randall Peckham. He grew up in Cresco; attending Cresco High School, where he participated in band, wrestling and football. After graduation from high school he attended Upper Iowa for two years.

In 1941, he moved to Des Moines where he married his wife, Geraldine. He retired from Crown Ready Mix in 1980.

Survivors include his wife Geraldine; two daughters: Sheila Mundell of Branson, MO and Winnie Curtis of Des Moines; one son: Wesley of Des Moines; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

R.J. was very proud of his life in Cresco. His family was most appreciative to the community of Cresco for the love and friendship always shown them.

Millie Koschmeder

Funeral services for Millie Koschmeder of Riceville were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 26 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville.

The Rev. Michael Parris officiated. Interment was in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Millie, 74, died Friday, March 23, 2001 at her residence after a short illness with liver cancer.

Mildred Koschmeder was born June 23, 1926, the daughter of Johnnie and Ida (Kvale) Larson. She was baptized at Osage Lutheran Church and confirmed there on May 26, 1940. She attended local school in Meltonville and Mitchell. Following high school graduation, she moved to St. Paul, MN and worked as a hostess/waitress at Lee's Broiler.

On April 23, 1949 she married Frederick John Koschmeder at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They moved to the Riceville area in 1950 and farmed in Howard County all of their lives. Millie worked at the Riceville Sale Barn Restaurant and Pettitt's Cafe in Riceville from April 1971 until she retired in January 1998.

Millie was an active member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville. She enjoyed participating in Bible Studies, quilting, Ladies Aid, Pairs and Spares, and was dedicated to supporting the youth group. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, playing cards, photography, dancing, theater, concerts, and was an avid reader. She was a member of the Farmerettes Club for over 40 years. She was an active member of the Riceville Community Rest Home Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sons: Fred Koschmeder, Jr. of Riceville and Jeffrey of Champlin, MN; three daughters: Lana Fowler of Kansas City, MO, Anne Koschmeder of Rochester, MN, and Nicole Armstrong of Independence, MO; seven grandchildren; one sister: Betty Grimm of Council Bluffs; and one brother: Virgil of Fairfield.

Millie was preceded in death by her husband Fred in 1992; her parents; four brothers: Arthur, Nuel, George and Hilbert and two sisters: Viola Larson and Hazel Brandt.

Vennie Brandt

Funeral services for Vennie Brandt of Cedar Rapids, formerly of New Hampton and Fort Atkinson, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 28 at the Calmar Commuity United Methodist Church in Calmar.

Letha Roger, interim pastor and Rev. Ed Meyer will be officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Fort Atkinson. Chekal Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Vennie, 85, died Sunday, March 25, 2001 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a short illness.

Survivors include his wife Catherine of Cedar Rapids; two daughters: Elaine Sweet of Cedar Rapids and Sally Cronin of Omaha, NE; and one brother: Harry of Salisbury, MD.

Marie Lubbert

Marie, 88, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at the Riceville Community Rest Home in Riceville.

Marie Erma Lubbert was born August 10, 1912 in Winterset, the daughter of Thomas and Barbara (Huglin) Evans. Marie attended local schools in Garner and moved with her family to the Riceville area in 1926. She continued her education in Riceville graduating from Riceville High School in 1931.

On February 18, 1935 she married Otis Lubbert at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charles City. Otis and Marie farmed in the Riceville area until their retirment. Marie also worked for Oliver until retiring. Otis passed away on September 28, 1991. In August of 1992 Marie moved to the Riceville Rest Home.

Survivors include one son: Thomas of Lakewood, CO; two grandchildren; three brothers: Roy of Coronado, CA, Harold of Phoenix, AZ; and one sister: Inez Clark of Cedar Falls.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband Otis; three brothers: Frank, Ernest, Floyd; and two sisters: Ilo and Louise.

 Esther Enos

Funeral services for Esther Enos were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 31 at the Saratoga Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Tim Sir officiated. Interment was in the Saratoga Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Ken Everman, Rick Hass, Tracey Franke, Doug Wyant, Delbert Warnke and Ron Norman. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Esther, 97, died Monday, March 27, 2001 at the Riceville Community Nursing Home.

Esther Verle Enos was born August 21, 1903 at Maple Leaf, the daughter of Matthew Gray and Edith (Walters) Stevenson. Verle as she was known attended rural school and high school at Elma. She did some substitute teaching and helped at home.

On October 12, 1926 she married Henry Enos at the Little Brown Church in Nashua and moved to the farm north of Saratoga. They lived on this farm for several years and then moved across the road where Verle lived until she entered the Howard County Residential Care Facility in January 1994. She entered the Riceville Community Rest Home in September 1999.

She was a 4-H leader and did sewing for the soldiers in World War II. She was active in the church and was a good seamstress.

Survivors include one brother: Kenneth of Lime Springs.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; four brothers: Lynn, Ben, Robert, and Ross; and two sisters: Olive Heater and Leone McFarlane.

Doris Anderson

Funeral services for Doris Anderson were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3 at the Saude Lutheran Church.

The Rev. Kent Dethlefsen officiated. Interment was in Saude Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jack Anderson, Travis Anderson, Stuart Anderson, Chad Anderson, Don Anderson and Jason Anderson. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Doris, 79, died Friday, March 30, 2001 at the Howard County Memorial Hospital in Cresco of natural causes.

Doris J. Anderson was born June 13, 1921 on the Ellingson home farm in rural Howard County, the daughter of Nels and Inger (Vaala) Ellingson. She was baptized and confirmed at the Saude Lutheran Church. She received her education in the New Oregon Township #11 country school and gaduated from the Cresco High School in 1939. Doris taught in rural country schools for six years including, Ridgeway, East Saude School and the Chester Elementary School.

On December 11, 1943 she married John Anderson at the Ellingson home. They farmed in north Chickasaw County.

Doris was an active member of the Saude Lutheran church and Ladies Aid.

Survivors include her husband John; three sons: Jack of New Hampton, Don of Lawler and Stuart of Northwood; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister: Arlene Natvig of New Hampton.

Doris was preceded in death by two grandchildren; her parents; one sister: Eleanor Ellingson; and one brother: Omer.

Elfriede Melver

Funeral services for Elfriede Melver were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 31 at the Conway Funeral Home.

Tim Jones and Rev. Randy Kruse officiated. Interment will be at a later date in New Oregon Cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandchildren: Bill Cain, David Rasmussen, Jason Jones, Melanie Kimber, Stepanie Cain and Doug Rasmussen.

Elfriede, 74, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at the Williamsburg Care Center in Williamsburg where she had been a resident since March 8.

Ruth Elfriede Melver was born July 16, 1926 at Heidenheim, Germany, the daughter of Klaus and Bertha (Schramm) Henle. She attended elementary and gymnasium school in her hometown. Following her education, she was employed as a telephone operator in Germany.

She met Clarence Donald Melver while he was stationed in Germany right after WWII and she came to Cresco and they were married on January 1, 1949. Following their marriage, she worked for Tex Brewer candleing eggs. In about 1959, they moved to Cedar Rapids where she worked for a short time for Rockwell Collins. She volunteered at St. Lukes Hospital, and volunteered for different theatre and dance groups. She attended the Baptist Church in Marion.

She retained her membership in the Cresco V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Survivors include three daughters: Gloria May of Stanwood, Donna Probasco of Isle, MN, and Susan Jones of Williamsburg; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Elfriede was preceded in death by her husband on December 26, 1989; her parents; one brother: Karl; and one sister: Berta Fischer.

John Foley

Funeral services for John Foley of Harpers Ferry were held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 29 at St. John's Catholic Church in Waterloo.

The Rev. George Karnik officiated. Interment was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waterloo. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

John, 68, died Friday, March 23, 2001 suddenly at his home in Harpers Ferry.

John Joseph Foley was born February 18, 1933 in Cresco, the son of Michael, Sr. and Frances (Opat) Foley. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco and graduated from Cresco Notre Dame Catholic High School in 1950.

On June 13, 1955 he married Lorraine Kalishek at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They were later divorced. John worked at Rath Packing in Waterloo for 34 years. He owned the Buccaneer Lounge in Hudson from 1982-1986. Since 1989 he has lived in Harpers Ferry where he worked at The Spillway from 1991-2000. He also worked as a farm hand for Dick Sadler.

John was a member of St. Ann's/St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry and St. John's Catholic church in Waterloo. He was also a member of Local P46 Butchers Workman's Union in Waterloo. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. He also liked to polka and listen to country music.

Survivors include one daughter: Tammy Foley of Lincoln, NE; two sons: Rick and Kevin, both of Waterloo; three grandchildren; one brother: Mike, Jr. of Cresco; and one sister: Kathleen Friedrich of Waterloo.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Edmund and William;and an infant brother and sister.

Alma Schneberger

Funeral services for Alma M. Schneberger of Calmar were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 29 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

The Rev. Donald Hawes officiated. Interment was in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Calmar. French Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Alma, 73, died Sunday, March 25, 2001 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI following a short illness.

Survivors include her husband James of Calmar; one son: Dean of Calmar; and one sister: Germaine Winter of St. Lucas.
