MAHTOMEDI, MN - Funeral services for Audell Matson were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Granger, Minn. Interment was held in St. Matthew's Cemetery in Granger.

Visitation was held one hour prior to services at the church.

Lindstrom Funeral Home of Harmony, Minn. handled the arrangements.

Audell, 94, died Monday Feb. 27, 2012 at New Harmony Care Center. Audell lived her last 12 years in Briar Cliff Manor, an unassisted living apartment in Mahtomedi, Minn. In November of 2011, she moved to New Harmony Care Center in St. Paul, Minn.


Audell Matson was born Aug. 29, 1918 in Cresco, the daughter of Roy Henry Betts and Gevina (Bjorgo) Betts. She graduated from high school in Cresco, Iowa, and graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

On July 5, 1942 she married Gordon Matson of Alta, Iowa, at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco. Audell taught school for thirty-one years at Maynard, Bondurant and Cresco, Iowa; Casper, Wyoming and Harmony, Minn.

She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran (Lydia Circle and ALCW of Granger, Minn.); American Legion Auxiliary, Harmony, Minn.

She was a homemaker and retired school teacher.

Audell is survived by two sons: Gordon (Cynthia) Matson of Oberlin, Kan. and Gerri (Susan) Matson of Jefferson City, Mo.; two daughters: Patricia (Mark) Bigalk of White Bear Lake, Minn. and LeAndra Matson of Cottage Grove, Ore.; grandchildren: Buck (Nelda) Matson of Oklahoma, Andrew (Sandy) Matson of Arkansas, Tara Matson of Missouri, Lisa (Jay) Ernst of Missouri, Cody Matson of Missouri, Andrea (Jeremy) Johnson of Iowa, Devanie (Martin) Hoven of Minnesota, Jakonah Matson-Bell of Oregon and Mandara Matson-Bell of Utah; great grandchildren Macee Ernst of Missouri, Alisa Ernst of Missouri, Brylie Johnson of Iowa, Kaleb Johnson of Iowa and William Hoven of Minnesota; one brother: Wayne (Carol) Betts of Omaha, Neb.; one sister: Verna Kruse of Tipton; along with many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gordon; her parents; sister: Mavis Willson; infant sister: Norma Cathline Betts; infant grandson: Matthew LeRoy; and brother-in-law: Dr. Otto Kruse.

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary I. Mulick of Cresco was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Father Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco with a scripture service following. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Mary, 93, died Friday, March 2, 2012 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.

Mary I. Mulick was born on Aug. 19, 1918 in Cresco, the daughter of J. Emmett and Mae (Ahern) Carroll. She graduated from Assumption High School in 1936 and after high school she studied at Iowa State Teachers College to receive a teachers certificate. She taught in several Howard County Country Schools. She went on to study at Mankato Commercial College. Mary worked at Bergfolk Furniture, Cresco, as bookkeeper.


On July 17, 1943 she married Lt. Gerald Regan at Assumption Church in Cresco. He was killed at Normandy on July 19, 1944. They had one son, Daniel.

On Nov. 7, 1952 she married Al Weber. To this union three children were born, Colleen, Creighton, and Gary. Al died Sept. 22, 1964.

On April 4, 1967 she married Joe Mulick, he preceded her in death on Jan. 16, 1992. Mary moved to the Evans Memorial Home in 2009.

Mary is survived by her children: Dan (Joyce) Regan of Charlotte, N.C., Colleen Lang of Minnetonka, Minn., Creighton (Kim) Weber of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Gary (Sheryl) Weber of Decorah; four grandchildren: Rebecca Kraiss, Rick Regan, Adam Weber, and Kathleen Weber; four great-grandchildren: Jacob Regan, Ethan Kraiss, Rachel Kraiss, and Mary Kraiss; sisters-in-law: Edythe Carroll-Clark, Kathleen (Harold) Theile, Eileen Weber; brother-in-law: Leo (Marge) Weber; and several nieces and nephews.

She was proceded in death by three husbands; her parents; her son-in-law: Leonard Lang; three brothers: Ray, Gene and Jerry Carroll; and her foster daughter: Rita Burke.

EYOTA, MN - Funeral services for Jamie R. Unverzagt of Eyota, Minn. will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 7, 2012 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester, Minn. with Pastor David Neil officiating. Interment will be held in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service today, Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jamie, 44, died Saturday, March 3, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester after suffering a massive stroke to his brain stem.

Jamie Roger Unverzagt was born May 7, 1967 in Rochester, Minn., the son of Roger and Betty (Clynch) Unverzagt. He attended schools in Rochester and Stewartville. Jamie grew up in the Village of High Forest being a fun loving, easy going guy. He enjoyed 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, motorcycling and mud bogging. He worked as a professional painter in new home construction.


Jamie is survived by his mother: Betty Torkelson and step-father: Louie Torkelson; one sister: Julie (Bruce) Nord; one brother: Mike (Roxanne) Unverzagt all of Rochester; a step-brother: Jay Torkelson of Rochester; step sisters: Kim Golden of Rochester and Amy Nadeau of Mazeppa; nieces: Brittany and Mackenzie Nord; step-nieces and step-nephews: Adam Wharton, Jalayna, Jace, Jade and Jaymi Torkelson, Brandon Stevens, Tommy and Maggie Waller; as well as his godparents: Catherine and Neil Kappes of Elma.

He was preceded in death by his fiance: Christie Hutton; his father: Roger Unverzagt; uncle: George Clynch; grandparents: Raymond and Mayme Clynch of Cresco; along with many other uncles.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Ruby A. Erickson of Cresco will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment will be held in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church.

Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Ruby, 88, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.

Ruby A. Erickson was born March 4, 1923 in Mabel, Minn., the daughter of Clarence Melvin and Elma Thressa (Hoscheit) Opsahl. Ruby attended school in Mabel and worked as a waitress and receptionist.

Ruby met Don Erickson at a dance at Matter's Ballroom in Decorah and they were married on Dec. 10, 1944.

Ruby spent her early married years worrying as her new husband shipped out to fight the German army on the European front. Don returned in fine health in June of 1946. Ruby has resided in Cresco since 1950. Ruby and Don worked together in numerous businesses and will best be remembered as the owners and operators of the Stop Light Cafe and Tavern from 1960-1970. Ruby went to work for Hoines Drug in 1970 and retired in 1988.

Ruby was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Ruby is survived by two daughters: Donna Lauckhart (Richard) of Davis, Calf. and Pamela Schuyler of Sacramento, Calf.; a son: Larry (Debra Lewis) of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren: Carolyn Cooper (Joe), Kristen Mazur (Rob), Erica Powers, and Reid Erickson; one great-granddaughter: Sonia Mazur; one brother: Harold; and three sisters: Dorothy Larson, Charlotte Neuhring, and Shirley Erickson.

She was preceded in death by her husband Don (1997); three brothers: Clifford, Norman and Robert; and one sister: Carol Torgerson.

Memorials may be directed to Patty Elwood Center.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Irene M. Brenno of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 9, 2012 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway. Interment will be held in the Lincoln Cemetery in rural Ridgeway.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, and also one hour prior to services at the church.

Irene, 97, died Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Irene M. Brenno was born April 5, 1914 in Winneshiek County, Iowa the daughter of Ernest and Emma (Lewis) Kach. She was baptized on July 11, 1914 and confirmed on July 8, 1928 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. She attended rural schools and graduated from Cresco High School in 1931. She worked as a waitress at several different places.

On July 10, 1950 she married Nayton Adolph Brenno at the Lincoln Lutheran parsonage in Ridgeway. They lived on a farm south of Ridgeway for 37 years and retired to Cresco in 1988.

She was a member of the Lincoln Lutheran Church, then to Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway, and was a member of the ELCA and several different circles. She was also a 50 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and V.F.W.

She is survived by her husband; one brother: Donald Kach; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant son: her parents; one brother: Percy Kach; and one sister: Dorothy Balk.

Memorials may be directed to the Lincoln Cemetery Fund.

LIME SPRINGS - Memorial services for Arnold "Arnie" L. DeRuiter of Lime Springs were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the Lime Springs United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.

Arnie, 74, died unexpectedly on Friday, March 23, 2012 at his home.

Arnold Lee DeRuiter was born December 17, 1937 in Lynnville, Iowa the son of Teunis and Jeanette DeRuiter. He attended country school in the Lynnville area, graduated in 1956 from Lynnville High School, and attended Upper Iowa University.

On May 31, 1959, he married Betty Rodas at the Congregational Church in Edgewood, Iowa. They lived in Edgewood and Arnie worked at Thermogas until 1968 when he was transferred to Lime Springs. Arnie also worked for Farm Service and the John Deere Dealership at Davis Corners until he and Betty purchased the hardware store in Lime Springs in 1983. He retired from the hardware business when the store burned in August 2000. Arnie was always active in the Lime Springs community, a long time member of the Lime Springs Community Club and various other civic organizations over the years. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf, shooting pool, fishing and feeding the birds.

Arnie is survived by three children: Mark (Bonny) DeRuiter of Byron, Minn., Janet (Tim) Smith of Elk River, Minn., and Craig (Sherri) DeRuiter of Delaware, Ohio; grandchildren: Zach and Kelsey Smith of Elk River, Minn. and Jacob and Joshua DeRuiter of Delaware, Ohio; sister: Boni (Bud) Wertz of Johnston; sister and brothers-in-law: Phyllis O'Rourke of Woodbury, Minn., Ted and Elaine Roth of Guttenberg, Charlene Rodas of Arlington, and Lowell and Maureen Rodas of Strawberry Point; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents; Betty's parents: Charles and Fannie Rodas; his brother: Daryl DeRuiter; and brothers-in-law: Donald Rodas and Art O'Rourke.

HARTLEY, IA - Funeral services for LaVonne Sadler of Hartley, formerly of Cherokee were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with Rev. Magrey de Vega officiating.

Visitation was held on Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. There was a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home on Saturday.

LaVonne, 89, died Tuesday evening, March 20, 2012 at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley.

LaVonne Sadler was born March 7, 1923 on a farm near Washta, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Stella (Anderson) Robeson. She grew up with five brothers and one sister. She attended and graduated from Grand Meadow School in 1941.

On August 22, 1941, she married Howard Sadler in Cherokee, Iowa. She worked along side her husband on the farm and was also a housewife and mother. She also operated a customer poultry business and did not retire until age 80. She had lived on farms east of Washta and in Grand Meadow Township for 57 years, moving to Cherokee in 1981. She resided in Alta for about one and one-half years and at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley for four and one-half years.

She belonged to a hobby club, card club and neighbor club. LaVonne enjoyed golf, camping at Okoboji in the summer, snowmobiling, flowers, baking, family and friends. She also loved music, dancing, having a good laugh and attending their children's and grandchildren's events through the years. She was always sending cards and clippings to family and friends during happy times and in times of need. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist in Cherokee.

She is survived her children; Ronny (Sharon) Sadler of Spirit Lake, Konny (Nick) Droegmiller of Alta, Iowa, Bonny (Duane) Wittkop of Tonganoxie, Kan., and Donny (Denise) Sadler of Hartley, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; brothers: Keith (Jan) Robeson of Ryderwood, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Howard on June 26, 2010; her parents; brothers: Harold, Byron, Boyd and Marlin; and a sister: Lola.

RICEVILLE - Funeral services for Dolores "Dolly" Miles of Riceville, formerly of Saratoga were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 23 at the funeral home.

Dolly, 93, died Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the Riceville Family Care Center.

Dolores Miles was born April 12, 1918 on the family farm, the daughter of David and Emma (Horesji) Dinger. Dolly attended rural school in Howard County and graduated from Riceville High School. She worked at Oliver in Charles City during World War II. Dolly began teaching in a country school before attending Upper Iowa University where she received her Bachelor's Degree. Throughout her 38 years of teaching she taught in Lime Springs, Chester, and Cresco Schools. She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star.

On April 9, 1939, she married Robert Miles in Worthington, Minn. Dolly loved to read and enjoyed watching Westerns on TV.

She is survived by her son: David (Becky) of Riceville; and a brother-in-law: Alfred (Bud) and Joan Miles of Omaha, Neb.

Dolly was preceded in death by her husband Bob; her parents; her mother and father-in-law: Reed and Myrtle (Ridgeway) Miles; a sister and brother-in-law: Ione (Richard) Jones; brother-in-law: Bill Miles; sister-in-law: Marian Miles; and a sister and brother-in-law: Mary (John) Seesiger.

COLUMBIA, MO - Funeral services for Delores "Dee" (Verbeck) Cowles of Columbia, Mo, formerly of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 23, 2012 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Pallbearers were: Jonathan Nierling, Caitlin Schmitt, Jon Vobr, Kevin Callahan, Tom Kleve and Mike Walsh. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Dee, 87, died Monday, March 19, 2012 at Columbia Manor Care Center.

Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Delores Cowles was born June 2, 1924 in Farmington, Minn., the daughter of James Dennis and Clara (Hosch) Magirl. She was one of six children, five girls and one boy in the family. Dee grew up as a farm girl, preferring to work outside on the farm. Following graduation from high school, she worked for Oelwein Chemical Co. (Occo) in Oelwein.

On Sept. 25, 1945, she married Edward Verbeck. To this union three children were born, Carol, Ron and Kay. Ed died in 1985.

She held bookkeeping positions at Cresco Pellets, Cargill and finally at Rodden and Johnson (John Deere).

Dee was an avid bowler, competing in league play in both Oelwein and Cresco. She particularly enjoyed traveling to State bowling tournaments. Her first state bowling tournament was in 1948 (Fort Dodge, Iowa) when she was bowling with the Occo team and their team placed first in Class C.

In 1988, Dee married Robert Cowles from Lamont and they later moved to Cresco.

Dee was an avid gardener and a wonderful cook. Her deep fried onion rings were among the best. She enjoyed fishing and she and husband, Bob spent many enjoyable days at their place near Harpers Ferry on the Mississippi River. They enjoyed spending winters in Pharr, Texas, where they enjoyed many retirement activities, including trips to Mexico.

Dee is survived by one daughter: Carol Nierling of Columbia, Mo.; one son: Ron (Kathy) Verbeck of Lime Springs; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step children: Dennis (Pat) Cowles of Iowa City, Jane (Stuart) Seedorff of Lamont and Lynette West of Lamont; and seven step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ed in 1985; and one daughter: Kay Verbeck in 1978.
