Vernon Harms

ALLISON—Vernon H. Harms, 81, of Allison, died on
Thursday, Septtmber 4, 2003, at the
Allison Care Center in Allison.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September
8, at the Allison United Church of Christ in Allison, with Pastor
Eileen Johnson officiating. Military services were provided by the
Allison AM Vets. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery at a later
date.
Vernon was born on October 12, 1921 at Norton's Corner near Shell Rock, to
Gerhardt and Elma (Coster) Harms. He graduated from the Shell Rock High
School and went on to serve in the Air Force. On April 22, 1944,
Vernon was united in marriage to Marjorie Speedy at Ardmore, Oklahoma.
His occupation involved many aspects of petroleum, including running
a tank wagon and doing independent oil jobs.
He was a member of the
Allison United Church of Christ, Allison AM Vets, American Legion,
Petroleum Marketers Ass'n., State and Regional X-Prisoner of War
Ass'n., Disabled Veterans of America and president and founder of
the Iowa Amateur Baseball Ass'n. Vernon enjoyed golf, baseball and
going to the casino.
He is survived by five sons, Vernon and wife, Colette of Cedar Falls,
Tom and wife, Sandy of Allison, Jay and wife, Linda of Oskaloosa, Jim
of Grimes and Jon and wife, Barb of Marion; one brother, Wendell and
wife, Rosie of Waterloo; one sister, Maxine Madson of Alden; 11
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Vernon was preceded in
death by his wife, Marjorie; and one sister, Norma Laubscher.
The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Allison, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Marcelyn Johnson

Marcelyn Johnson, 80, of Eldora and formerly of Williams,
passed away on Friday, September 5, 2003, at the Eldora Nursing
and Rehab Center in Eldora.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, September 8, at the Linn’s
Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m.,
on Sunday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be
directed to the Bethel Baptist Church or the First Christian Church,
Iowa Falls. The Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been
entrusted with the arrangements.
Bessie Marcelyn Johnson, was born on February 20, 1923, on a farm north
of Homer, Iowa, in Webster County, the daughter of Harold and
Bessie (Hoover) Johnson. She was educated by a tutor at Williams,
Iowa. She was baptized on June 28, 1931 at the Methodist Church,
Evanston, Iowa and was baptized again on May 18, 1952, at the First
Christian Church, Iowa Falls. She never married. After the death of her father, Marcelyn and her mother moved to
Williams, where her mother kept house for Howard H. Hurd and
helped take care of his five children after his wife had died. His
children ranged in age from 4 to 11 and Marcelyn being 8 at the
time, enjoyed having a family and she being a very loving person,
was loved by all who knew her.
On January 16, 1946, Marcelyn’s mother and Alfred Axtell were
married, giving Marcelyn one more family to love. She was very fond
of her step-father and all his family. After Alfred’s death in May
of 1977, Marcelyn and her mother became residents of the Eldora
Manor Care Center in Eldora, where Marcelyn has lived since
January 20, 1979.
Marcelyn is survived by three foster sisters, Wilma Gobeli
and family of Meservey, LaVonne Friar and family of Sun City West,
Arizona and Charlotte Stewart and family of Toledo, Iowa; her
stepbrother and stepsister, Harry Axtell and his wife,
Barbara and family and Mable Lee and husband, Lloyd and
family, all of Iowa Falls.
Marcelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Bessie
Johnson; her step-father, Alfred Axtell; her foster father, Howard Hurd; one foster sister, Shirley Knode; and foster brother, Dale Hurd.

Jessie Pickering

ELDORA—Jessie Pickering, 91, of Eldora, died on Friday, September 5, 2003,
at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services
will be held on Wednesday, September 10, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Baptist Church
in Eldora. Burial will follow in the Eldora Cemetery. Memorials may
be directed to the family in her name.
Jessie was born on April 17, 1912 in rural New Providence, to Orie and
Florence (Frazier) Gerry. She graduated from the Eldora High School in
1930. On September 18, 1934, she was united in marriage to Cecil A.
Pickering at Grundy Center. The couple made their home in Eldora,
where Jessie was employed by Northwestern Bell as a telephone
operator, and worked in the family grocery store.
Jessie was a
lifetime member of the First Baptist Church, Daughters of the
American Revolution, Sansoci Club, Federated Women's Club, Women's
Missionary Society and 20th Century Club.
Survivors include two nieces, Kathryn Wilts of Eldora and Ethel
Hadley of Cedar Rapids; and several other nieces and nephews.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil in January
of 1999; and two brothers, Wilson and Joe.

Henry A. Koenen

LATIMER—Henry A. Koenen, 83, of Latimer, died on Friday, September 5,
2003, at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on
Tuesday, September 9, at the First Reformed Church in Alexander, with
Pastor Phil Arnold officiating. Burial was in the Alexander
Cemetery. Military graveside rites were provided by the Hanson-Have
American Legion Post No. 658 of Latimer. Memorials may be made to
the First Reformed Church of Alexander.
Henry was born on July 20, 1920, to Harm and Gazena (Halfwassen) Koenen
in rural Latimer. He attended the Plain View County School and served
four years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Hermitage during WW II. On
July 22, 1942, Henry was married to Viola Stoffer at the First
Reformed Church in Alexander. The couple farmed in the
Alexander-Latimer area until his retirement in 1983, at which time
they moved to Latimer.
Henry was a member of the First Reformed
Church of Alexander and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing,
golfing and spending time with friends and family.
Survivors include his wife, Viola; three children, Dianne Long and
husband, Michael of Mason City, Janet Osborne and husband, Thomas of
Tucson, Arizona and Craig of Newton; 10 grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two
brothers, Harm and Peter; and four sisters, Grace, Anna, Rebecca and
Helen.
The Willim Funeral Home of Latimer, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Willard "Bill" W. Smit

IOWA FALLS—Willard "Bill" W. Smit, 73, died
on Sunday, September 7, 2003,
at his home in Iowa Falls, after an 18 year struggle with emphysema
and COPD.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 13, at 2:00 p.m., at
the Evangelical Free Church in Iowa Falls. Burial will follow in the
Union Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Hyman-Peavey
American Legion Post No. 188 of Iowa Falls. Visitation will be on
Friday, from 5-8:00 p.m., at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.
Memorials may be directed to the family. All memorials will be sent to
the Hospice of Northern
Iowa.
Willard Wayne Smit, was born on December 13, 1929, on a farm near Chapin, to
Dick and Ettie (Janssen) Smit. He graduated from the Chapin High School
in 1947 as valedictorian of his class. Bill served in the U.S. Army
from January 1952 until December 1953. He was stationed in Germany
most of that time. He was released from active duty at Fort
Sheridan, Illinois. He then served in the Army Reserves until 1960, when
he was honorably discharged. He attended the Zion Reformed Church near
Sheffield. In 1962, he married Arlene (Meyer) Marken at the Church
of Christ in Hampton, where he attended faithfully. Bill farmed near
Sheffield until June 1969, when the family moved to Iowa Falls. He
worked as a mechanic at the Conaway John Deere Implement Co. in Jewell
until 1986, when he was diagnosed with emphysema.
Bill was a Hawkeye
fan and a Chicago Bulls fan. He loved watching ball games on TV,
reading extensively and spending time with his family and friends.
His faith in God sustained him throughout his life.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene; one son, Joel Smit of Iowa
Falls; a step-daughter, Pam Bappe and husband, Tom of Spring Hill,
Kansas; two stepsons, Lynn Marken of Hubbard and Gene Marken and wife,
Sandy of Rockwell City; six step-grandchildren, Alex, Mollie and
Alice Marken of Rockwell City, Jason Marken of Marshalltown, Shana
Lanio and husband, Mark of Olathe, Kansas and Aaron Bappe and wife,
Heather of Kansas City, Kansas; two step-great-granddaughters, Jordan
and Shaylee Lanio of Olathe; two sisters, Mildred Wenzel and husband,
George of Belmond and Esther DeVries and husband, Alvin of Sheffield;
a brother, Dennis Smit and wife, Sue of Hampton; and several nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepmother,
Bessie Smit; and one sister and brother-in-law, Gert and Louis
Stadtlander.

Ralph Tietz

OWASA—Ralph W. Tietz, 84, of Owasa, died
on Sunday, September 7, 2003, at
the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held on
Friday, September 12, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora, with Pastor
David Splett officiating. Burial will be in the Eldora City
Cemetery. Visitation is on Thursday, September 11, from 5-8:00 p.m., at
the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, with the family present from 5-7:00
p.m.
Ralph was born on March 31, 1919 in rural Eldora, to Charles and Anna
Marie (Schwebke) Tietz. He graduated from the Owasa High School in 1937.
Ralph resided in Jackson Township for the majority of his life,
where he was a grain farmer and raised Angus cattle. He was an avid
fan of Iowa State University athletic events in addition to the
Minnesota Twins. Ralph was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Lou Doering and husband, Harry of Iowa
Falls and Norma Ostrem of Eldora; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother-in-law, Virgil Ostrem; and one nephew, Ronald Doering.

Donald Purvis

WELLSBURG—Donald Lee Purvis, 86, of Britt, formerly of Wellsburg,
died on Sunday, September 7, 2003, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in
Britt.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 10, at 10:30 a.m.,
at United Reformed Church in Wellsburg, with Pastor Harold Miller
officiating. Burial will be in the Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg.
Donald was born on January 18, 1917 in Grundy Center, to Leroy and Johanna
(Stumberg) Purvis. He graduated from the Grundy Center High School and
went on to graduate from the University of Iowa, where he was
commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He taught one year
in the Renwick School System before getting orders for active duty.
From 1941-1945, he served in Newfoundland and in the CBI
(China-Burma-India) Theater. On October 10, 1941, he married Evelyn
Ross in Wellsburg. After returning from the service, he joined his
father-in-law, John W. Ross, in the implement business. He later
bought the partnership and became sole owner of Ross & Purvis Sales
& Service. In 1976, he sold the business and began wintering in
Sarasota, Florida. In 1982, they moved to Port Charlotte, Florida. They
wintered there until setting up permanent residence in Britt in
December of 2002.
Don was a member of the Second Christian Reformed
Church of Wellsburg, where he served several terms on the
consistory. He served nine years on the Wellsburg School Board, was
president and long time member of the Wellsburg Community Club, and
was a 50-year member of the American Legion in Wellsburg. While in
Florida, he was a member of the Maple Leaf Estates Golf & County
Club in Port Charlotte and was a member of the First Presbyterian
Church. He was an avid sports fan and had excelled in high school
and college sports.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; three daughters, Linda Schmidt
of Richmond, Virginia, Bonnie and husband, Bill Buchholtz of Austin,
Texas and Jean and husband, Jerry Gilmer of Sycamore, Illinois; two
sons, Jim and wife, Jeanie Purvis of Britt and Dean and wife, Cathy
Purvis of Charlotte, North Carolina; nine grandchildren; and three
step-grandchildren.

Burt Weaver

HAMPTON—Burt W. Weaver, 84, of Hampton, died on Sunday, September 7, 2003,
at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.
Funeral
services will be held on Thursday, September 11, at 10:30 a.m., at
the St. Paul
Lutheran Church in Hampton, with Rev. Jon Anderson officiating.
Burial will be in the Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center. Visitation
will be on Wednesday, September 10, from 4-8:00 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home in Hampton.
Burt was born on November 4, 1918 in Buffalo Center, to Allen and Anna (Heikens)
Weaver. He attended country school near Buffalo Center. Burt served
in WW II, stationed in the South Pacific in New Guinea. On February 14,
1948, he was united in marriage to Lily Aukes. She passed away in
1959. He was remarried on June 4, 1983, to Betty Sims in Hampton.
Burt was a farmer who enjoyed playing cards, reading and attending
men's prayer breakfast. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church
and a lifelong member of the Buffalo Center American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; one daughter, Mary Ann Garvey
and husband, Dan of Farmington, Minnesota; one son, David Weaver and
wife, Sheila of Madison Lake, Minnesota; two grandsons, Richard Garvey
and wife, Heather of Apple Valley, Minnesota and Shawn Garvey and wife,
Jennifer of Prior Lake, Minnesota; one granddaughter, Karla Garvey of
Farmington; two step-grandchildren, Mercedes and Micah Morson of
Madison Lake.
Burt was preceded in death by his parents; his wife;
two sisters and four brothers.

Velma Lord

Velma Lord, 82, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Wednesday, September 10,
2003, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on
Saturday, September 13, at the First United Methodist Church,
Iowa Falls, with the Reverend Don Preston officiating. Visitation
will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Private family
burial will be at a later date. The Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls
Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Velma Frances Lord, was born on February 17, 1931, at Longmont,
Colorado, the daughter of Verne Frank and Mabel Johnston (Cameron)
Ward. She attended grade school in St. Louis, Missouri and graduated
from the Albert Lea, Minnesota High School with the class of 1939.
She attended Iowa Wesleyan College at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, for two
years. On July 31, 1941, she was united in marriage to Roger "Bruce"
Lord at Maple Island, Hollandale, Minnesota. She was a housewife and
community volunteer.
She was a member of the First United Methodist
Church, Iowa Falls, the Methodist Women's Fellowship, Maple Grove
Willing Workers, the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital Auxiliary, the
Eastern Star, the White Shrine Kensington Club, the American Legion
Auxiliary, the Iowa Falls Historical Society, and the Edgewood Board
of directors.
Velma is survived by two sons, Roger Lord and wife, Mary Ellen of
Mesa, Arizona and Theodore "Ted" Lord and wife, Patricia of Iowa Falls;
two daughters, Patricia Ann Lord of Iowa Falls and Elizabeth Coningsby
and husband, John of West Des Moines, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and
seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents,
Verne and Mabel Ward; her husband, Bruce Lord; and one brother, Frank
Ward.

Donald A. Severson

JEFFERSON—Donald Allen Severson, 62, of Jefferson, died
on Thursday,
September 11, 2003, at his home.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 15,
at the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson, with Rev. William
Daylong and Rev. Sheri Daylong officiating. Burial was in the
Jefferson Cemetery.
Donald was born on December 10, 1940 in Forest City, to Edward and Evelyn
(Johnson) Severson. He was raised in Leland and graduated in 1958
from the Forest City High School. Don went on to further his education
at Waldorf College in Forest City and Hamilton Business College in
Mason City. On October 20, 1962, he was married to Rosalee Rios in
Garner. Don joined the Hardin County Rural Electric Cooperative as an
accountant in 1963, and was promoted to general manager in 1974. The
couple made their home in Iowa Falls for 30 years and have been
members of the Jefferson community for 10 years. In 1992, Greene
County REC and Hardin County REC consolidated to form the Midland Power
Cooperative to which Don was named general manager, a position he
held until November 2001.
During his career, he served on numerous
boards associated with the electrical industry. Don also managed
the Rockwell County REC and Guthrie Country REC. After a lengthy
illness, he officially retired on January 2, 2003. Don was a member of
the First United Methodist Church of Jefferson, the Good Guys and a
past member of the Jefferson Rotary Club. He found much enjoyment in
street rods.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalee; two daughters, Brenda Severson
of Newton and Vicki Warman and husband, Dave of Scottsdale, Arizona;
his mother, Evelyn Severson of Garner; and two grandchildren, Jamie
and Brandon of Scottsdale.
He was preceded in death by his father.
The Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home of Jefferson, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Robert J. Klein

ELDORA—Robert J. Klein, 44, of Eldora, formerly of Ackley, died
on Thursday, September 11, 2003, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, September 28, at
the St. John's United
Church of Christ in Ackley, with Rev. Steve Acheson of Iowa Falls
officiating. A fellowship time will follow in the St. John's Hall
immediately following the services. Memorials will be left to the
discretion of the family.
Robert John Klein, was born on September 28, 1958 in Waterloo, to John and
Harriett (Ricksmeier) Klein. He was a baptized member of the St. John's
United Church of Christ. At age 4, Robert became a member of the
Cherub Choir and later sang with the the St. John's Choirs until
graduating from the Ackley High School in 1977. During his school years,
Bob was active in many vocal music and band activities, playing the
bass drum in the high school marching band. Bob also performed in
many community theater musical productions.
On April 20, 1986, Robert was united in marriage to Marianne (Mari)
Whorrall at The Little Brown Church in Nashua. He ran an antique
auto parts business, did auto body work, restored antique furniture,
and worked at Winnebago Industries in Hampton. He later attended the
Rausch College of Auctioneering in Mason City and ran his own
auction business for a time. Bob and Mari were house parents at Quakerdale for a number of years. After his health caused him to
become disabled, Bob, along with his partner Steve Gaulke, operated
an agri-labor contracting business called W. D. Fields.
Bob enjoyed
many leisure activities throughout his life such as playing the
dulcimer and hammer dulcimer, restoring antique cars, attending car
shows and traveling. Robert also participated in buck skinner
rendezvous and renaissance festivals.
Robert is survived by his wife, Mari; one son, Wilton
"Wil"; one
daughter, Katie; his mother, Harriett Klein of Ackley; and one
brother, Gary Klein of Ackley.
He was preceded in death by his
father and his grandparents.
Bruce's Funeral Home and Cremation Center of Fort Dodge, is in charge
of the arrangements.

Judith Reisetter

RADCLIFFE—Judith Beatrice Reisetter, 96, of Radcliffe, died
on
Thursday, September 11, 2003, at the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 15, at
the Our Savior's
Lutheran Church in Radcliffe. Burial was in the Radcliffe Cemetery.
Judith was born on September 19, 1906, to John and Bertha (Ostrem) Male.
She graduated from the Radcliffe High School in 1925. On February 15, 1928,
she was united in marriage to Irvin Reisetter in her parents' home
near Garden City. They farmed five miles southwest of Radclifffe for
four years. In 1932, Judith and Irvin moved to a farm eight miles
northwest of Radcliffe, where they lived for 43 years. They retired
in 1969 and built a home in Radcliffe in 1974. Judith remained in
Radcliffe until moving to the Hubbard Care Center in December 2000.
She was a member of the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe
and was
active with the Ladies Aid where she enjoyed quilting.
Survivors include one daughter, Beverly Tuttle and husband, Lyle of
Marshalltown; one son, Charles Reisetter and wife, Leone of
Marshalltown; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one
sister, Kathleen Britson of Radcliffe; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Irvin; three sisters,
Ragnhild Christianson, Ellen Tollakson and Charlotte Peterson; and four
brothers, Osmund Male, Joe Male and two in infancy.
The Boeke Funeral Home of Racliffe, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Jack Wellen, 83, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Sunday, September
14, 2003, at the Scenic Manor, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, September 18,
at the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls, with the Reverend
Don Preston officiating. Burial will be in the Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in
Fort Dodge. Military honors will be provided by the Hyman-Peavey
American Legion Post # 188, Iowa Falls. Visitation will be from 2-8:00 p.m.,
on Wednesday, at the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel,
with the family receiving friends between the hours of 6-8:00

Jack A. Wellen, was born on July 12, 1920 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son
of LaGora Al "Jack" and Hazel (Pettibone) Wellen. He was raised in
Iowa Falls attending the Iowa Falls Community Schools and graduating
with the class of 1937. He served with the United States Army during
World War II. Jack was employed by Mike's for Men Clothing, Iowa
Falls and volunteered with the Iowa Falls Nutrition Site. He was a
member of the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls and the

Bernard Gutting

GENEVA—Bernard Gutting, 78, of Geneva, died on Monday, September 15, 2003,
at the St. Vincent's Hospital in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Funeral services will
be held on Friday, September 19, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church
in Hampton, with burial to follow in the Hampton Cemetery. Fr. Jim
Miller and Fr. Jerry Condon will officiate. Visitation will be on
Thursday, September 18, from 4-7:00 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in
Hampton, with a scripture service at 7:00 p.m.
Bernard was born on December 5, 1924 in Trimbell Township, Wisconsin, to Christ
and Marie (Bednar) Gutting. He attended school in Beldenville, Wisconsin.
On October 24, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mary Gorski at
Ellsworth, Wisconsin. Bernard was involved with dairy farming while in
Wisconsin, and following his move to Iowa, chose to do construction
work. He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church and took
great interest in the Green Bay Packers football team.
Survivors include five sons, Robert and wife, Mary Lou of
Marshalltown, Edward and wife, Kathy of Donellson, Christopher and
wife, Heidi of Ellsworth, Wisconsin and Lawrence and wife, Holly and
Philip and wife, Sandy, all of Geneva; five daughters, Debra Powers of
Tomah, Wisconsin, Lori Johnson and husband, DuWayne of Bay City, Wisconsin,
Gloria Burnell and husband, Bill of Centerville, Tennessee, Bernadene
Peacock and husband, Richard of Wilmington, North Carolina and Mary Heldenbrand
and husband, Dave of Latimer; one brother; three sisters; one
sister-in-law; 23 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; parents; one sister; and
three brothers.

Clarence Macnab, 94, of Iowa Falls, passed away
on Wednesday, September
17, 2003, at the Hubbard Care Center, Hubbard, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on
Saturday, September 20, at the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel. Burial will be
in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Visitation will be from 2-7:00 p.m.,
on Friday, at the Linn's Funeral Home,
Iowa Falls, with the family receiving friends between the
hours of 5-7:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed The Ellsworth
Municipal Hospital Foundation, Iowa Falls.
The Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with
the arrangements.
Clarence Edward Macnab, was born on November 24, 1908 at Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, the son of Frank R. and Annie (Palmer) Macnab. He
graduated the the Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania High School with the
class of 1926. He then attended business school receiving his
accounting certificate. He was employed as a tax accountant with
Westinghouse Electric, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, retiring in 1968.
He and his wife moved to Iowa Falls in 1986. On June 6, 1934, he was
united in marriage to Blanche H. Hunter at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
To this union two children were born, Ruth and David.
Clarence Macnab is survived by his daughter, Ruth M. Campbell and
husband, John of Iowa Falls; his son, David C. Macnab and wife,
Elaine of Salida, Colorado; seven grandchildren; fourteen
great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Annie Macnab; his wife,
Blanche Macnab; his twin brother, Howard Macnab; and three sisters,
Mabel Booth, Ruth Carmell and Ada Brown.

Clyde M. Chantrill

ACKLEY—Clyde Morris Chantrill, 70, of The Colony, Texas, formerly
of Ackley, died on Friday, September 19, 2003, at the Trinity Medical Center in
Carrollton, Texas.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, September 26, at
10:30 a.m., at the St. John's United Church of Christ in Ackley, with Rev.
Mary Stonebraker officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery
in Ackley. There will be no visitation.
Clyde was born on January 23, 1933 at Iowa Falls, to Fred and Viola (Holsclaw)
Chantrill. He graduated from the Iowa Falls High School. Clyde served in
the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division, where he
completed 18 jumps with the Screaming Eagles. On March 3, 1957, he
was united in marriage to Josephine Mulder at Ackley. He was
employed by the city of The Colony as a heavy equipment operator.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine of The Colony, Texas; three
daughters, Connie Stubbe and husband, Terry of Ackley, Cyndi Chantrill of Frisco, Texas and Tammy Lawver and husband, Eric of
Richardson, Texas; four grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Schluter
and husband, Vernon of Nora Springs; and two brothers, Richard Chantrill and wife, Lucille of South Portland, Maine and Jim Chantrill and wife, Roma.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and twin grandchildren,
Alvin and Jennie Lawver.
The Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley, is in charge of

LATIMER—Carl Jerome Keepf, 63, of Latimer, died on Saturday, September 20,
2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
A memorial graveside
service will be held on Thursday, September 25, at 10:30 a.m., in the Lindenwood
Cemetery, rural Geneva, with Rev. Jeff Long officiating. There will
be no visitation.
Carl was born on April 8, 1940 at Hampton, to Fred and Lucy (Thompson) Keepf. He graduated from
the Hampton High School and went on to graduate
from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona with a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry. Carl served in the U.S. Army
during the Vietnam War. He worked with forest products his entire
life, and was employed by Kaibab Lumber, Georgia Pacific and H. Carl
Mason. Watercolor painting, bird watching, traveling and studying
family genealogy were among his favorites.
Survivors include his daughter, Lea Keepf of Phoenix, Arizona; one
stepdaughter, Brenda Allison of Casper, Wyoming; a sister, Janice Pralle and husband, Leon of Latimer; and four nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Iris J. Alitz

DUMONT—Iris J. Alitz, 79, of Dumont, died on Saturday, September 20, 2003,
at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held on
Wednesday, September 24, at 11:00 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Aredale, with Rev. Terra Amundson and Rev. Chuck Wallace officiating.
Burial will be in the Oak Wood Cemetery in Plymouth.
Iris was born on August 23, 1924 in Dumont, to Carl and Hazel (Miller)
Stock. She graduated from the Dumont High School. On September 2, 1950, she
was united in marriage to Milton Alitz at Aredale. Iris was employed
by Sears as an interior decorator; owned a Country Kitchen
restaurant in Davenport; and later moved to Hampton where she worked
at the Hampton Nursing Home and cared for her family.
She was a
member of the Aredale United Methodist Church and Women's Auxiliary
Legion Post No. 360 in Dumont. Iris enjoyed gardening and spending
time with the family, especially the grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, Mark Alitz and wife, Lori of Mason City
and Steven Alitz and wife, Evette of Phoenix, Arizona; one brother,
Dale Stock and wife, Claire of Dumont; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Esther Jaspers

ACKLEY—Esther Pauline Jaspers, 91, of Ackley, died on Sunday, September
21, 2003, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.
Funeral services
will be hel on Wednesday, September 24, at 1:30 p.m., at the East Friesland
Presbyterian Church in Ackley, with Rev. Bruce Baillie officiating.
Burial will be in the East Friesland Cemetery.
Esther was born on July 28, 1912 in Grundy County, to Joe and Minnie (Heetland)
Boyenga. She attended school at German Township No. 7 and graduated
from the Ackley High School in 1929. Esther went on to Ellsworth College
and received her teaching certificate. She taught country school
prior to her marriage. On August 23, 1933, she was united in marriage
to Abraham Jaspers at her parents' farm.
Esther was a member of the
East Friesland Presbyterian Church, where she served as organist
and the Steamboat Rock Boat Club. Baking for others at Christmas,
family events, especially those that involved her grandchildren,
were among her favorites.
Survivors include one son, Arthur Jaspers of Ackley; three
daughters, Lorraine Fritzel of Sun City Center, Florida, Patricia
Magnuson of Eldora and Janice Piper and husband, Steve of Eldora; 11
grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Abraham; her parents; one
granddaughter; one brother, Joy; and two sons-in law.

Paul H. Honke

NAPER, Nebraska—Paul H. Honke, 85, of Naper, Nebraska, died
on Monday, September 22,
2003, at the Avera Gregory Healthcare Center in Gregory, South Dakota.
Funeral
services were held on Friday, September 26, at the Saints Peter and Paul
Catholic Church in Butte, Nebraska, with Father Tom Gall officiating.
Military rites were provided by the American Legion Post No. 51 of Butte.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Paul was born on October 29, 1917, to Paul and Emma (Ertz) Hanke at Butte.
He attended the Saints Peter and Paul Parochial School and the Butte High
School. He served with the Army Air Corps during WW II, earning his
Silver Wings as a B-17 bomber pilot. Paul was a POW after his plane
was shot down. On May 30, 1944, he was married to Gertie Lueken at
Winner, South Dakota. The couple farmed and ranched in the Butte and Naper
area. Paul was very active in his church and community, serving in
leadership roles and receiving many awards for his work in Nebraska
agriculture.
Survivors include his wife, Gerite; two daughters, Carolyn Swanda
and husband, Larry of Des Moines and Shirley Lindeman and husband, Wenlyn of Iowa Falls; three sons, Paul "Bud" of Naper, Gregg and
wife, Karla of Carroll and Keith and wife, Gina of Butte; one
son-in-law, Willard Dummer of Spencer; 16 grandchildren; 10
great-grandchildren; three sisters and three brothers.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Janice Dummer; his
parents; and four brothers.
The Brockhaus Funeral Home of Butte, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Lenora Janssen

ACKLEY—Lenora Janssen, 95, of Ackley, died on Tuesday, September 23, 2003,
at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.
Funeral services were held on
Thursday, September 25, at the St. John's United Church of Christ in Ackley,
with burial in the West Friesland Cemetery, rural Ackley.
Lenora was born on April 17, 1908 in Wellsburg, to Folkert and Hiske (Spieker)
DeVries. She attended country school at German No. 6. On March 1,
1928, she was united in marriage to John Janssen at the West
Friesland Parsonage. Lenora was employed by the Presbyterian Village
in Ackley for 25 years. She was a member of the St. John's United Church
of Christ and the Crescent Club. Reading and sewing were among
Lenora's favorites until her eyesight failed.
Survivors include two daughters, Irene Finger of Aplington and
Janice Sheeler of Ackley; eight grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; a daughter in
infancy; two grandsons, Eldon and Trent Finger; two sisters, Ella Huisman and Anna Boelman; and five brothers, Carl, Fred, Herman,
Jerry and Edward DeVries.

Clara M. Huen

ELDORA—Clara M. Huen, 87, of Eldora, died on Saturday, September 27, 2003,
from complications of pneumonia at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in
Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 30, at 10:30 a.m.,
at the Creps-Abels Funeral home in Eldora, with Pastor William Dilsaver
officiating. Burial was in the Eldora City Cemetery.
Clara was born on November 5, 1915 at Hubbard, to Henry and Meta (Brandt) Bunte. She graduated from
the Hubbard High School in 1933. On January 4,
1942, Clara was united in marriage to Lloyd E. Huen. They moved to
their farm in rural Eldora and lived there all their married lives.
Clara was a lifelong member of the Zion United Church of Christ in
Hubbard. Traveling and reading were among her favorites.
Survivors include two nephews, John Bunte of Des Moines and Rick
Bunte of Clackamus, Oregon; two nieces, Carolyn Ballard of Moorhead,
Minnesota and Mary Piper of Iowa City; and one sister-in-law, Marjorie Bunte of Pine River, Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd; and
two brothers, Walter Bunte and Harvey Bunte.

Dick "Sassy" Perez

HAMPTON—Dick "Sassy" Perez, 80, of Hampton, died
on Monday, September 29,
2003, at the Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held on
Thursday, October 2, at 1:30 p.m., at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in
Hampton, with Fr. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in the
Hampton Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 1, from 4-8:00
p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.
Sassy was born on February 23, 1923 in Belmond, to Jose and Inez Perez. He
received his education in the Hampton Schools and served in the U.S.
Army during WW II. In 1953, he was united in marriage to Beverly Hovenga in St. Paul, Minnesota. Sassy worked for Kreiner Bros. for 32
years and retired from Sorenson Motors, both businesses located in
Hampton.
Fishing, working on cars and mowers, tinkering in his
workshop and riding in parades in the jeep were highlights of his
life. Sassy enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and
told many great stories that will be cherished.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly of Hampton; three sons, Delbert
Perez and wife, Sarah and David Perez and wife, Amy, all of Hampton
and Gary; two brothers, Chris Perez and Tony Perez, both of St. Paul;
three sisters, Josaphine Zambrano and husband, Abie, China Castillo
and Mercides Nava and husband, Manual, all of St. Paul; six
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Dick and Danny;
two brothers, Jim and Pete; and two sisters, Mary Lascon and Vicki
Fuentes.

David H. Kolbe

RADCLIFFE—David Harold Kolbe, 94, of Radcliffe, died
on Tuesday, September
30, 2003, at the Bethany Manor in Story City.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, October 4, at the St. John's United Methodist Church in Radcliffe,
with Pastor Marvin Dooley officiating. Burial was in the Hubbard
Cemetery.
David was born on December 6, 1908 in Marshalltown, to Frank and Anna (Mehulka)
Kolbe. On June 24, 1931, he was united in marriage to Ruth McCoy at
Webster City. David began the third generation of farming with
Charlie McCoy, Ruth's father, in 1945, which he continued until
1963. He helped the McCoy family farm remain in the family for more
than 100 years. David drove school bus for the Radcliffe Community
School in his later years and had a small engine repair shop.
He
was a member of the Farm Bureau Service Company, serving on the
board of directors; Masonic member of the Antioch Lodge No. 617; and
director of the McCoy School, which is still standing north of the
McCoy home place.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; three sons, Duane and wife, Shirley
of Zearing, Donald and wife, Marilyn of Story City and Gary and wife,
Janet of Geneva, Illinois; two daughters, Donna Schradle and husband,
Gerald of Ames and Karen Baker and husband, Eric of Elmhurst, Illinois;
15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and seven
great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Stanley Kolbe of
Marshalltown; and seven sisters, Ruth Schaper of Grinnell, Evelyn
Matney of Turlock, California, Tressa Epperly of San Diego, California,
Bernice Cariello of Riverside, Illinois, Shirley Wilkening of State
Center, Josephine Lukehart of Des Moines and Pauline Jessen of
Independence, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Delos; two
sisters, Helen Worsfold and Rosemary, in infancy; and one brother,
Frank.
The Boeke Funeral Home of Radcliffe, was in charge of
the arrangements.
