Harvey Harberts
November 29, 1914-October 2, 2003

PARKERSBURG—Harvey Louis Harberts, 88, of Parkersburg, died on Thursday, October 2, 2003, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 6, at the Reformed Church of Stout, with Pastor David H. Powers officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg.

Harvey was born on November 29, 1914, to John and Hannah (Casjens) Harberts near Holland. He received his education at the Beaver No. 4 country school in Grundy County. On March 10, 1941, he was united in marriage to Reka Tjebkes at the Parsonage of the Coster Christian Reformed Church. Harvey was inducted into the U.S. Army on December 16, 1942. He served with the Medical Detachment of the 706th Tank Destroyer Battalion in Paris, Texas. He received an honorable discharge on February 17, 1944 and returned to Iowa where the couple made their home in Parkersburg. Harvey worked as a farm hand, trucker and mechanic for an implement dealer prior to his 26 years of employment at Viking Pump in Cedar Falls.

He was a member of the Reformed Church of Stout and the men's choir. Harvey was a lifetime member of the Parkersburg American Legion Post No. 285, Butler County Volunteer of the year in 1990, and served with the Historical House restoration in Parkersburg. He enjoyed the fellowship with his friends at the senior center in Parkersburg and singing with the Silver Beaver vocal group.

Survivors included one daughter, Brenda Hempen and husband, Harlan of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Orville Harberts of New Hartford; and one sister-in-law, Vella Harberts of Garnavillo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Reka; his parents; one brother, Dick Harberts; and son-in-law, Robert Berry.

Kenneth N. Hanson
March 20, 1916-October 2, 2003

DOWS—Kenneth N. Hanson, 87, died on Thursday, October 2, 2003, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 4, at the First Lutheran Church in Dows, with Pastor Paul Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Otis Grove Cemetery, rural Dows.

Kenneth was born on March 20, 1916, to Bennett and Gene (Gunderson) Hanson on their farm in Franklin County. He attended country school near the farmstead through eighth grade and graduated from the Popejoy High School. Throughout school Ken played baseball, pitching for Popejoy when they played in the state tournament. Following graduation, Ken even spent some time pitching for a farm team in Virginia. On March 21, 1937, Ken was united in marriage to Evelyn Ingebritson at the Methodist Parsonage in Hampton. The couple made their home in rural Dows where they raised their family. Ken farmed his entire life, grew an abundance of garden produce and maintained many apple trees. He taught woodworking at the Popejoy High School for a short time and continued this talent to create many pieces of furniture for his family. Bus trips to various locations was a favorite of the couple in their later years.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; three sons, Merrill Hanson and wife, Geraldine, Norman Hanson and wife, Carol and Neilan Hanson and wife, Trish, all of Dows; seven grandchildren and their families, including John Hanson and wife, Kerri, Brent and Ellie of Dows; and two sisters, Alice Osborne of Dows and Arlene Engelby of Iowa Falls.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Linda; one grandson, Erik Hanson; one sister, Lenore Kirby; and four brothers, Gilman, Merlin, Olin and Milo Hanson.

Doris Hoffman
August 11, 1909-October 3, 2003

IOWA FALLS—Doris Helen Hoffman, 94, of Iowa Falls, died on Friday, October 3, 2003, at the Scenic Manor Care Facility in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 7, at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, with Rev. Don Preston officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls. Memorials may be directed to the North Iowa Hospice or to the First United Methodist Church.

Doris was born on August 11, 1909, to Charles A. and Susie (Platts) Jackson at her parents' home in Jackson Township, Hardin County. She graduated from the Owasa High School in 1926. She taught country school in Hardin County and was employed by Northwestern Bell in Iowa Falls as a telephone operator. On December 8, 1931, she was united in marriage to Leonard E. Hoffman at the home of her parents. The couple lived on farms in the Owasa, Iowa Falls and Buckeye areas. In 1961, they moved to Washington, D.C., where they lived for eight years, retiring to Iowa Falls and spending their winter months in Arizona.

Doris was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Madole and husband, Marly of Mt. Pleasant and Jean Chappell and husband, C. B. of Morehead City, North Carolina; one son, Gary Hoffman and wife, Karla of Iowa Falls; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Mae Jackson of Eldora and Betty Jackson of Des Moines.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Leonard; two brothers, Dallas and Gerald; one sister and brother-in-law, Glenita and Robert Pryor; and one great-granddaughter, Kristie Bahr.

Dennis K. Eller
January 13, 1942-October 4, 2003

RADCLIFFE—Dennis K. Eller, 61, of Radcliffe, died on Saturday, October 4, 2003, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 7, at the Salem United Methodist Church in Hubbard, with Rev. Ron Ridgway and Rev. Al Streyffeler officiating. Burial was in the Hubbard Cemetery.

Dennis was born on January 13, 1942 in Eldora, to Verner and Inez (Hornung) Eller. He received his education at the Evergreen Country School and graduated from the Radcliffe High School in 1959. He completed the two-year farm operations course at Iowa State University and began farming full-time. He was manager of the family grain and livestock operation until the mid 1980s, at which time he became owner/operator of his own farming business. On December 28, 1970, he was united in marriage to Marcia (Dreier) Rooks in Eldora.

Dennis was involved in both the Hubbard and Radcliffe communities. He was a 4-H Leader of the Concord-Sherman Challengers, president of the Hubbard-Garden City Co-op, president of the Hardin County Cattleman's Association, served on the Radcliffe School Board, was a past member of the Iowa Cattleman's Association, was in charge of the Hardin County Fair 4-H calf weigh-in for many years, and served on the Board of the Midland Power Co-op. Dennis was a member of the Evergreen EUB until it closed. He was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church in Hubbard, where he served in many capacities. Dennis liked farming, raising cattle and his German Shepherd dogs. He enjoyed golf, traveling, fishing and camping, as well as winter trips to Texas that allowed him to hike, bicycle and bird watch. Baking was another interest, with the family favorite being his chocolate chip cookies.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Julie Sandvig and husband, Kent of Grimes; one son, Matt Eller and his partner, Susan Harrison of Portland, Oregon; one granddaughter, Liliana K. Sandvig; his father, Verner of Hubbard; and a brother, Loren Eller and wife, Darlene of Ankeny.

He was preceded in death by his mother; an infant sister; and his stepmother.

Henrietta Pieters
January 28, 1920-October 5, 2003

STEAMBOAT ROCK—Henrietta Pieters, 83, of Steamboat Rock, died on Sunday, October 5, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 8, at 10:30 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock, with Pastor Bruce Baillie officiating. Burial will be in the Steamboat Rock Cemetery.

Henrietta was born on January 28, 1920, to Arend and Anka (Heikens) Noordman. On May 18, 1937, she was united in marriage to Leo James Pieters at Owasa. They farmed near Morrison before moving to Steamboat Rock in March of 1956. In 2001, Henrietta moved to Valley View Nursing and Rehab in Eldora, where she resided until her death. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock and enjoyed gardening, observing wildlife and hunting mushrooms.

Survivors include four sons, James and wife, Janelle of Holland, Leland and wife, Bev and Howard "Butch" and wife, Jan, all of Steamboat Rock, Dean and wife, Carol of West Des Moines; one daughter, Sheryl Farley of Steamboat Rock; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Leo; her parents; and sister, Mattie Egabroad.

Viola E. Smith

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois—Viola Edna Smith, 93, of Rock Island, Illinois, formerly of Iowa Falls, died on Monday, October 6, 2003, in Rock Island.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, November 15, in the Union Cemetery, with Rev. Dave Schwechel officiating.

Viola was born on April 5, 1910 in Iowa Falls, to Charlie and Hanna (Roskam) Smith. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1928, Ellsworth College in 1932 and the Iowa Falls Conservatory of Music in 1934. She moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1936 and became a subscriber relations correspondent, methods and procedures for TIME Magazine in Chicago, retiring in 1970. Viola moved from Evanston, Illinois, to Friendship Manor in Rock Island in 1983. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Iowa Falls, Ministering circle of King's Daughters of Rock Island and the First Baptist church choir in Evanston.

Survivors include her niece, Wilma Anders and husband, Henry of Hubbard; two nephews, K. Dale Smith and wife, Carol of Marshalltown and Robert M. Smith and wife, Judy of Muscatine; 12 grand nieces and nephews; and several great grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death be her parents; and two brothers.

Avonelle Leino

ARLINGTON, Virginia—Avonelle June Leino, 91, of Arlington, Virginia, formerly of Alden, died on Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at the Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, October 15, at 11:00 a.m., in the Alden Cemetery, with Rev. Rick Layman officiating. There will be no visitation.

Avonelle was born on July 23, 1912 in Popejoy, to Wilson and Mina (Trousdale) Jaques. She graduated from the Popejoy High School. Avonelle and Leo T. Leino were married in Washington, D.C. She was employed by the Scripts-Howard Newspapers, retiring in 1972. Avonelle was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Arlington and Rainbow Circle.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Annie Jaques of Silver Spring, Maryland; two nieces, Charlotte Jaques Salmin of Northport, New York and Barbara Waite-Jaques of Silver Spring, Maryland; and one nephew, Robert P. Callens and wife, Susan of Orange Beach, Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; her parents; twin brother, Alvin T. Jaques; and one nephew, Edward Trousdale Jaques.

Betty A. Donner

ELDORA—Betty A. Donner, 69, of Eldora, died from cancer on Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, October 13, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldora, with Father James Dubert officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Eldora. Visitation is from 5-8:00 p.m., on Sunday, at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, with a rosary and prayer services beginning at 5:00 p.m. A memorial fund is being established in her name.

Mildred Willeke
December 11, 1909-October 9, 2003

APLINGTON—Mildred Willeke, 93, of Aplington, died on Thursday, October 9, 2003, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 13, at the Aplington Baptist Church, with Pastor Dan Smith and Rev. Donald Patet officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Aplington. Memorials may be directed to the Baptist Japan Short Term Mission.

Mildred was born on December 11, 1909, to Charles and Tillie (Spieker) Willeke in her parents' home in Aplington. She graduated from the Aplington High School and enrolled in the Mounds-Midway School of Nursing in St. Paul, Minnesota. Mildred became a registered nurse, working in St. Paul and during WW II in the Des Moines Munitions Plant. She returned to Aplington to care for her parents and to work as a partner in the family firm of Charles Willeke and Sons.

Mildred was a lifelong member of the Aplington Baptist Church, serving in many capacities, in addition to mission work. Gardening, music and playing the piano were among her favorites.

Survivors include six nieces and nephews and six great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; and two sisters-in-law.

Marlyn Runge
December 28, 1923-October 10, 2003

BUCKEYE—Marlyn Carl Runge, 79, of Buckeye, died on Friday, October 10, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 14, at the Peace United Church of Christ, with Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Buckeye VFW Post No. 1886. Burial was in the Buckeye Cemetery, rural Buckeye.

Marlyn was born on December 28, 1923, to Carl and Hedwig "Hattie" (Lettow) Runge at the family farm, rural Buckeye. He was a 1941 graduate of the Buckeye High School. Marlyn served in the U.S. Army during WW II and was the chief escort and guard at the Nuremberg Trial. On September 20, 1952, he was united in marriage to Frances Steelman at the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ in Alden.

He was a member of the Peace United Church of Christ in Buckeye, serving on the church board. Marlyn was a 44-year member of the Elks, a member of the Buckeye Community Club, ASCS Township Committeeman, trustee for the Buckeye Cemetery and was the quartermaster for the VFW in Buckeye. He was a life member of the Buckeye VFW Post No. 1886 and the Collins-Dunning American Legion Post No. 201 of Alden. Hunting, fishing, photography and attending the state fair were among his favorites.

Survivors include his wife, Frances; one son, Jack Runge and wife, Terry of Radcliffe; one stepson, Allen Brown and wife, Carlene of Arizona City, Arizona; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Carolyn Lawrenz.

Harvey C. Mackie

GRUNDY CENTER—Harvey C. Mackie, 93, of Grundy Center, died on Friday, October 10, 2003, at the Arlington Place in Grundy Center.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 14, at the First Baptist Church in Grundy Center, with Pastor Michael Nemmers officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the Shepherd's Children's Home in Union Grove, Wisconsin or to the Cedar Valley Hospice.

Harvey was born on April 1, 1910, to Jesse and Neta (VanHoy) Mackie on his parents' farm near Union. The family moved to Eldora where he attended school. On February 13, 1934, he was united in marriage to Agnes Dooyema at her parents' farm near Leota, Minnesota. The couple farmed in rural Grundy Center for 30 years, retiring in 1965, at which time they moved to Grundy Center. In August 2002, they moved to Arlington Place. Harvey was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, trustee and usher. Horses, ponies and woodworking were among his favorites.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes; one son, Vernon Mackie and wife, Betty of Grundy Center; one daughter, Marceline Romig and husband, Dave of Midlothian, Virginia; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Walter, Clarence, Gurnie and C. Arthur Mackie; and two sisters, Gertha Diehl and Rose Clemons.

Edna E. Walters

IOWA FALLS—Edna E. Walters, 87, of Iowa Falls, died on Friday, October 10, 2003, at her home in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 13, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, with Rev. Kenneth Krueger officiating. Burial was in the Hubbard Cemetery in Hubbard.

Edna was born on January 19, 1916, to John and Martha (Puttkamer) Brandt at Hubbard. She attended rural school near Alden and graduated from the Hubbard High School. On February 19, 1936, Edna was united in marriage to William Zoske. The couple later divorced. On March 10, 1956, she was married to David Walters at Austin, Minnesota. Edna was a homemaker. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Rebekah Circle.

Survivors include her husband, David; one daughter, Karen Touch and husband, Bob of Ankeny; one son, Dennis Walters and wife, Dixie of Conrad; two grandchildren, Konni VanLangen and husband, Doug of Ellsworth and Kirk Haugland and wife, Rachel of Randall; and five great-grandchildren, Andrew Haugland, Kristina Haugland, Ceara VanLangen, Jacob Haugland and Shea VanLangen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a great-grandson, Tjay VanLangen.

Arnold G. Thies, 79, of Iowa Falls, Iowa, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.

HOLLAND—Arvilla F. Aalfs, 81, of Holland, died on Sunday, October 12, 2003, at her home.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 15, at 1:30 p.m., at the Holland Christian Reformed Church, with Pastor Gary Nibbelink officiating. Burial will be in the Holland Cemetery in Holland.

Arvilla was born on June 9, 1922, to Tom and Mary (Venenga) Dreesman at her parents' home in Grundy County. She attended country school at Palerma No. 4 in Grundy County. On November 26, 1942, she was married to Harm L. Aalfs at Holland, making their home in the Holland area. Arvilla was a homemaker, sales clerk and seamstress who enjoyed cooking and bird watching. She was a member of the Holland Christian Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday School and was involved with the Ladies Guild.

Survivors include her husband, Harm; two sons, Michael and wife, Marlene of Gladbrook and Terry and wife, Debra of Wellsburg; five grandchildren, including Jennifer Rose and husband, Chad of Steamboat Rock; six great-grandchildren; one sister; and two sisters-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and one sister.

Phyllis (Bossard) Buhl

RADCLIFFE—Phyllis (Bossard) Buhl, 79, formerly of Nevada, died on Sunday, October 12, 2003, in Crookston, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 17, at 10:30 a.m., at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe. Burial will be in the Radcliffe Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., at the Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe.

Richard D. Smith
November 4, 1936-October 13, 2003

ELDORA—Richard D. Smith, 66, of Eldora, died at his home on Monday, October 13, 2003, while under the care of the Homeward Hospice.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 15, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora, with Pastor Corey Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Eastlawn Memory Garden in Eldora, with full military honors by the Walter-Sayer Post No. 182 of the American Legion and Roll-Harless No. 3974 of the VFW.

Richard was born on November 4, 1936 in Eldora, to Richard and Ethel (Johnson) Smith. He was raised in Eldora, graduating from the Eldora High School in 1954. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1957. On February 14, 1982, Richard was united in marriage to Sandra Clapsaddle in Eldora. He had previously worked for Fisher Controls of Marshalltown, the Iowa State Training School for Boys in Eldora and Clapsaddle Sales of Whitten. In April of 1988, Richard was forced to retire due to health problems.

He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora and a 29-year member of the Walter-Sayer Post No. 182 of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra; one daughter, Stacey Frerichs and husband, Chris of Des Moines; one son, Jason Smith and wife, Kellie of Eldora; one step-son, Troy McDonald and wife, Tammy of Eldora; and three grandchildren, Hannah Frerichs, Justyn Smith and Melinda McDonald.

Ed Boyenga
June 12, 1932-October 14, 2003

WATERLOO—Ed Boyenga, 71, of Waterloo, died on Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at the Covenant Medical Center.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 17, at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, with burial in the First Christian Reformed Church Cemetery in Wellsburg. Military rites were conducted at the church by the American Legion Post No. 138 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1623.

Ed was born on June 12, 1932, to Edward and Tena (Bleeker) Boyenga at Faulkner. He graduated from the Ackley High School and attended Ellsworth Junior College. Ed served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In 1965, he married Leola Nederhoff in Wellsburg. Ed was employed by Chamberlain Manufacturing Co. until its closing.

Survivors include one daughter, Cindy Phillips and husband, Donald of Belle Plaine; one son, Kent Boyenga and wife, Jennifer Terry-Boyenga of Ottumwa; four grandchildren; two sisters, Marion Bodecker of Waterloo and Betty Wilkens and husband, James of Marshalltown; and two brothers, Arlyss Boyenga of Caballa, New Mexico and Alvin Boyenga of Ackley.

HUBBARD—Lorraine Dee Hornung, 74, of Hubbard, died on Thursday, October 16, 2003, at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 20, at the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard. Burial was in the Hubbard Cemetery.

Lorraine was born on April 22, 1929, to Marion and Margie (Hauser) Upton. Lorraine attended the Whitten Community School, graduating in 1946. She attended Drake University for two years and obtained her teaching certification and later continued her education at Drake University, graduating in 1971. Lorraine taught second grade in Hubbard from 1948-1950 and resumed teaching in 1961, continuing her teaching career until 1991. On June 14, 1950, Lorraine married Robert Hornung at Whitten. The couple farmed near Hubbard.

She was a member of the Whitten Christian Church and later became a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard. Lorraine was active in church and the community, serving on the library board and various church boards. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Theta Chapter. Her bulletin boards at the Care Center, church, school and library were enjoyed by many.

Survivors include one son, George Hornung and wife, Kristi of Fairfield, Illinois; one daughter, Barbara Doering of Hubbard; three grandchildren, David and Brooke Doering and Taylor Hornung; two sisters, Arlene Fuller and Beatrice Elliott; five nieces; and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents; her step-father, Robert Bavender; one brother, Wallace Upton; and one sister, Colleen Upton.

Orville Landrith

HAMPTON—Orville James Landrith, 89, of Hampton, died on Friday, October 17, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 20, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with Rev. Jerry Miller officiating. Burial was in the Hampton Cemetery in Hampton.

Orville was born on June 4, 1914, to Orville and Cora Bell (Carle) Landrith in Keithsburg, Illinois. He received his education in the Keithsburg School System. Orville served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II, earning the Purple Heart. On July 12, 1960, he was united in marriage to Ann H. Johnson at Jefferson City, Missouri. Orville was employed by the U.S. Post Office in Mason City and Hampton. He was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church. Fishing and hunting were among his favorites.

Survivors include one daughter, Beverly Stockberger and husband, Dale of Geneva; one brother, John Landrith of Little York, Illinois; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his special friend, Ila Mae Peterson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann; his parents; three sisters, Rosa, Bessie and Mary; and one brother, Lawrence.

Kevin W. Holder

ELDORA—Kevin W. Holder, 43, of Glenwood, died on Friday, October 17, 2003, in Council Bluffs, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 22, at 10:30 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Eldora, with Pastor Anne Lippincott officiating. Burial will follow in the Eldora City Cemetery.

Kevin was born on June 27, 1960, to Raymond and Betty (Free) Holder. He attended school in Eldora, graduating with the class of 1978. Kevin went to a mechanic technical school in Sheldon. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for a number of years. After being honorably discharged, he attended the Lincoln Technical Institute in Des Moines for auto and diesel mechanics. On December 6, 1986, Kevin was united in marriage to Cynthia Hoffman in Knoxville. They lived in Pleasantville, Storm Lake and Grand Island, Nebraska, making their home for the last 13 years in the Omaha, Nebraska and Council Bluffs area.

Kevin was an avid bowler, belonging to two leagues and receiving numerous recognition in that sport. He was a member of the Midwest Mudraggers Association and was a volunteer at the Midwest Motorplex Race Track in Glenwood.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia; two children, Raymond and Brittany, both at home; one step-son, Aaron Cole of Spring, Texas; one step-daughter, Aimee Baker and husband, Michael of Council Bluffs; one brother, Larry Holder of Rochester, Minnesota; two sisters, Nancy Ertz of Estherville and Barbara Walker and husband, Jack of Wyckoff, New Jersey; and one step-grandchild, Andrew Baker.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant sibling; and his father-in-law, Clarence Hoffman.

LaVern Hopkey

LATIMER—LaVern Paul Ernst Hopkey, 88, of Latimer, died on Saturday, October 18, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 21, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer, with Rev. Jeff Long officiating. Burial was in the Marion Center Cemetery, rural Latimer.

LaVern was born on August 3, 1915, to George and Louise (Meyer) Hopkey in Meservey. He attended school in rural Meservey. On February 5, 1941, he was united in marriage to Clara Mae Blom at Coulter. The couple farmed in the area until 1976, at which time they retired and moved to Latimer. LaVern was a 50-year member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ, serving on the Men's Fellowship Committee and as past Deacon. He enjoyed bowling, yard work, playing cards and cribbage.

Survivors include his wife, Clara; two sons, Larry E. Hopkey and wife, Virgene of Albert Lea, Minnesota and Edward D. Hopkey and wife, Marylin of Storm Lake; two granddaughters, Allison Fullenkamp and husband, John of Troy, Ohio and Angie Hopkey of Coralville; and one great-grandson, Jonah Fullenkamp of Troy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.

Blanche Gilbert

IOWA FALLS—Blanche Gilbert, 90, died on Saturday, October 18, 2003, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 23, at 10:30 a.m., at the Linn's Funeral Home Chapel in Iowa Falls, with Rev. Margaret Debner officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 22, from 2-8:00 p.m., at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends between 6-8:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.

Blanche was born on July 14, 1913, on her parents' farm in Dallas County, to Orva and Laura (Wagner) Myers. She attended the Adel Community School, graduating with the class of 1932. Blanche received her Registered Nursing Degree at the Mercy School of Nursing in Des Moines. She worked as a registered nurse for several years, including employment with Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. On January 16, 1940, she was united in marriage to C. Harold Gilbert III at her parents' home near Adel. The couple made their home in Ellis Township at the Locust Lawn Farms, southwest of Iowa Falls, where they raised corn, beans, hogs, cattle, sheep and chickens. After retiring, they enjoyed flea markets. Blanche was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa Falls.

Survivors include her daughter, Liz Gilbert of Iowa Falls; son, Charles H. Gilbert IV and wife, Carol of Iowa Falls; two granddaughters, Kim Van Pelt and husband, Jeff of Greenville, South Carolina and Suzanne Askelsen and husband, Chad of Madrid; two great-grandchildren, Kaylee Van Pelt of Greenville and Mason Askelsen of Madrid; one brother, Harold Norris and wife, Billie of Iowa City; one sister-in-law, Virginia Myers of Indianola; and one brother-in-law, Bill Gilbert and wife, Mary of Iowa Falls.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and two brothers, Frank (in infancy) and Howard.

Henry G. Kromminga

APLINGTON—Henry G. Kromminga, 82, of Aplington, died on Sunday, October 19, 2003, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 22, at 10:30 a.m., at the Christian Reformed Church in Austinville, with Rev. George McGuire officiating. Burial will be in the Austinville Cemetery.

Henry was born on April 18, 1921, to John and Grace (Mulder) Kromminga at the family farm in Washington Township. On November 26, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lenora Jane Muller in Austinville. The couple farmed in the area. Henry was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church in Austinville, Farm Bureau member and participated in community events.

Survivors include three sons, Arlen Kromminga and wife, Carol of Ackley, Kevin Kromminga and wife, Linda of Eldora and Delwyn Kromminga of Aplington; one daughter, Belinda Kromminga and husband, Art Dutcher of Denver, Colorado; three grandchildren, Gaylen Kromminga of Morton, Illinois, Lisa Jeske of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Pamela de Neui and husband, Dale of Dunkerton; three great-grandchildren, Amanda, Cassandra and Abby de Neui of Dunkerton; and three sisters, Anna Mae Buseman of Aplington, Marion Harken of Parkersburg and Julia Johnson of Parkersburg.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Lenora; and one son, Wendell.

Martha E. Huston

IOWA FALLS—Martha E. Huston, 91, of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 25, at the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel. Burial was in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Marshalltown.

Martha was born on October 21, 1912 in Gilman, to Lewis and Deborah (Mock) Simcox. Martha graduated from the Lemoile High School where she was very active in girls' basketball and played on all-state teams. She attended Drake University and began her 11-year teaching career in rural schools. On July 3, 1942, Martha married Russell Huston. The couple lived in Dallas, Texas and several areas in California during his Navy career, returning to Iowa to raise their children following his discharge. They farmed in Marshall County for four years and five years near Iowa Falls. In 1956, they moved to Eldora where they stayed until 1972.

After many years at home, she enjoyed her jobs in a clothing store and later as society editor at the Eldora Herald Ledger. She was always involved with her children's education and active in many school groups. In 1972, they moved to Ankeny and later returned to Iowa Falls to retire. Martha was a member of the Meeting in Iowa Falls.

Survivors include two sons, Steven Huston and wife, Kathy of Aplington and Douglas Huston and wife, Sandra of Iowa Falls; one daughter, Karen Cakerice and husband, Lonnie of Pilot Point, Texas; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russell; one sister; and eight brothers.

Margaret Tack

APLINGTON—Margaret Tack, 94, of Aplington, died on Saturday, October 25, 2003, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 28, at the Hitesville Gospel Hall, rural Aplington, with Robert Orr officiating. Burial was in the Hitesville Cemetery.

Margaret was born on February 16, 1909 in Emdem, Germany. She migrated with her family as a small child to the United States. Margaret received her education from a country school near Allison. On December 25, 1934, she was united in marriage with Harvey Tack in Kansas City, Missouri. The couple farmed in the Ackley and Aplington areas. They retired in 1970 and made their home in Aplington. Margaret enjoyed the fellowship at the Hitesville Gospel Hall. She enjoyed embroidery work, gardening, flowers, cooking and baking.

Survivors include one brother, Warner Sluiter and wife, Elizabeth of Parkersburg; two sisters, Bena Walters of Allison and Fannie Leerhoff of Parkersburg; two brothers-in-law, Melvin Tack of Grundy Center and Kenneth Tack and wife, Beulah of Wellsburg; and one sister-in-law, LaVerne Tack of Wellsburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; her parents; one sister, Anna Spieker; and three brothers, Adolph, Henry and Grant Sluiter.

Nellie Christensen

HAMPTON—Nellie Gertrude Christensen, 84, of Hampton, died on Tuesday, October 28, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Memorial services will be held at a later date with Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. There will be no visitation. Inurnment will be in the Hampton Cemetery also at a later date.

Nellie was born on January 6, 1919, to Harrison and Mildred (Malone) White in Penn Township, Stark County in Illinois. She graduated from the Princeville High School in Princeville, Illinois. On July 16, 1939, Nellie was united in marriage to Forest Danger. She was married to Elmer Christensen on July 27, 1981. On June 11, 1993, Nellie and George Berlin were married. She was employed by Farmer's Hybrid. Nellie was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton and the Franklin General Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards.

Survivors include one step-daughter, Janet Siems of Hampton; one step-son, Milton Buck Berlin of Jacksonville, Florida; one sister-in-law, Regina Danger of Buffalo Center; two nieces; one nephew; five step-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and three husbands.

Kenneth E. Picht

IOWA FALLS—Kenneth E. Picht, 94, of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday, October 28, 2003, at the Scenic Manor in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 31, at the First Christian Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.

Kenneth was born on February 24, 1914 in Story County, to Anthony and Mary (Mackey) Picht. He attended the Beaver Valley County School in Franklin County. On September 24, 1930, he was united in marriage to Nina Meyer at her parents' home in Franklin County. The couple farmed in Franklin County, retiring in 1964. He was united in marriage to Wilma Nyce on December 26, 1987.

Kenneth was a member of the First Christian Church in Iowa Falls and the Iowa Falls Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed traveling, cooking, gardening and especially his family.

Survivors include his companion, Avon Price of Iowa Falls; three daughters, Shirley Johnson and fiancé, Alan Shucard of Greenfield, Wisconsin, Marilyn Poulson and husband, Don of Des Moines and Carol Morgan and husband, Ken of Normal, Illinois; nine grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his two wives, Nina and Wilma; his parents; one grandchild, Brian Anthony Picht; one sister, Lucille England; and two brothers, Russell and Clyde.

HAMPTON—Antonia Rocha, 80, of Hampton, died on Wednesday, October 29, 2003, at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 1, at 10:00 a.m., at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hampton, with Fr. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Antonia was born on November 26, 1922 in Medina, Texas, to Mecindo and Defina (Ramos) Salinas. On January 4, 1942, she was united in marriage to Gregorio Soto Rocha at La Pryor, Texas. Antonia was a homemaker. She was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hampton. Sewing, cooking and watching Spanish soap operas were among her favorites.

Survivors include three sons, Arturo Rocha and wife, Janie, Guadalupe Rocha and wife, Graciela and Gregorio Rocha Jr. and fiancée, Pamela Meyer, all of Hampton; two daughters, Rosa Rodriquez and husband, David of Marshalltown and Defina Martinez and husband, Francisco of Hampton; two brothers, Mecindo Salinas of Charles City and Ricardo Salinas of Hampton; one sister, Anita Briones of Pasco, Washington; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gregorio; her parents; one daughter; one grandchild; two sisters; and one brother.

IOWA FALLS—Coral June Berndt, (pronounced "Bearint"), 86, of Iowa Falls, formerly of Buckeye, died on Wednesday, October 29, 2003, at her home.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 1, at 10:00 a.m., at the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel. Visitation was one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial was in the Sherman Cemetery, rural Buckeye. Serving as casket bearers were David Larson, Kent Lage, Nick Teig, William Moffett, Gus Zierke, Robert Harsted and Ronald Shaver.

Coral June Teig, was born on April 4, 1917 at Radcliffe, Iowa, to Carl and Julia (Berve) Teig. She attended the Radcliffe Community School, graduating as valedictorian of her class. On June 25, 1938, she was united in marriage to Wallace Keith Berndt in the Lutheran Church Parsonage, Williams, Iowa. To this union two daughters were born, Julia and Joyce. She was a member of the First Congregational Church UCC at Iowa Falls.

Survivors include her daughters, Julia Newgaard of Iowa Falls and Joyce Eittreim and husband, Marlyn of Wichita Falls, Texas; three grandchildren, Gene Newgaard of Iowa Falls, Paul Newgaard and wife, Stephanie of Satsuma, Alabama and Sandra Moffett and husband, William of Akron, Ohio; three great-grandchildren, Cody and Taylor Newgaard of Satsuma and Ashley Moffett of Akron; and one sister, Clara Larson of Hubbard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Berndt; her parents, Carl and Julia Teig; three sisters, Nora Niblo, Frances Lage and Rosela Klug; and six brothers, Otis, Mervin, Nels, Amos, Clarence and Silas Teig.

Sommai "Mai" Meyer

BAKERSFIELD, California—Sommai "Mai" Meyer, 39, of Bakersfield, California, died on Wednesday, October 29, 2003, as a result of a car crash in northwest Bakersfield.

Funeral services were held on Monday, November 3, in Bakersfield.

Mai was born on December 18, 1963 in Vientiene, Laos. Her family moved to Hull, Iowa, in 1976, where she attended school. She graduated in 1988 with a degree in finance from the University of Iowa. Mai married Dan Meyer of Ackley after moving to Taft, California from Iowa City. She was a member of the Chinese Women's Club of Bakersfield and was the current president of the Business Women's Club of Bakersfield.

She is survived by her husband, Dan; two daughters, Whitney and Alexandria; three brothers; and five sisters; in-laws, Glenn and Roberta Meyer of Ackley; three sisters-in-law, Deborah Miller of Iowa Falls, Tamara Fitzpatrick of Wheaton, Illinois and Angie Risius of Ackley; and a brother-in-law, Tony Meyer of Crown Point, Indiana.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, November 5, at the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard, with visitation at the Boeke Funeral Home from 6-8:00 p.m., on Tuesday evening. Memorial gifts may be directed to the family.
