NEW PROVIDENCE—Doris H. Faris, 78, formerly of rural New
Providence, died at the Scenic Manor in Iowa Falls, on Monday, December 1,
2003.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, December 5,
at the Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church in New
Providence. Burial followed in the New Providence Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed in her name to the North Iowa Hospice
or the Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church.
Doris was born on March 25, 1925 in Iowa Falls,
the daughter of Carl H.
and Ruth (Leonard) Meyer. She was raised and educated in the
Iowa Falls area where she graduated from the Iowa Falls High
School in 1943 and Ellsworth Community College in 1946.
Following her graduation, Doris taught school in New Providence
for the third and fourth grade classes. On June 1, 1948 in Iowa
Falls, Doris was united in marriage to Bob Faris. Doris and Bob
made their home in rural New Providence for many years where
they both actively operated their family farm.
She was an avid
fan of the Iowa State Cyclones and enjoyed all sports, but
especially enjoyed watching her daughter, Carol Ann, play
softball. Doris was a member of the Honey Creek New Providence
Friends Church, where she served on the ladies auxiliary, the
funeral committee and played in the Friday afternoon "Green
Jade" card club.
Doris is survived by her husband, Bob of Iowa Falls; her
daughter, Carol Ann and husband, David Wilson of Saskatoon, Saskachewan, Canada; and her grandchildren, Megan and Ryan
Wilson, both of Saskatoon.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Ruth.

Lucy E. Steinfeldt

ELDORA—Lucy E. Steinfeldt, 93, of Eldora, died on Tuesday, December 2,
2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral
services were held on Friday, December 5, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in
Eldora, with Pastor David Splett officiating. Burial was in the
Eldora City Cemetery.
Lucy was born on May 7, 1910 in Eldora, to Thomas and Minnie
(Evans) Reece. She was raised in Eldora, graduating from the Eldora
High School. On November 26, 1935, Lucy was united in marriage to
Clarence Steinfeldt at Eldora. The couple made their home
southeast of Eldora where they farmed. In 1962, they moved to
Eldora.
Lucy was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, the
Ladies Aid and was a member of the Farm Bureau Women.
Survivors include her son, Larry Steinfeldt and wife, Maggie of
Eldora; grandchildren, Sharm Manwiller and Grant Steinfeldt and
wife, Kara, of Eldora; and six great-grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; her parents; one
grandson, Ryan Steinfeldt; one sister, Anna Brock; and one
brother, Grover Reece.

Edna C. Jacobs

CEDAR FALLS—Edna C. Jacobs, 96, of Cedar Falls, formerly of
Waterloo, died on Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at the Cedar Falls
Lutheran Home.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 6, at
1:30 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in Cedar Falls, with
burial in the Garden of Memories. Friends may call at the church
one hour before the service time. Memorials may be given to the
Cedar Falls Lutheran Home.
Edna was born on January 28, 1907 in Popejoy, to William and Ida Marie
(Meyer) Beurer. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School.
In 1926, she was united in marriage to Peter Finger. She was
married to Jesse Jacobs in 1957. Edna was employed as bookkeeper
at Superior Welding for 24 years, retiring in 1973.
Survivors include two sisters, Jeannine Dawson and husband, Dick
of Donna, Texas and Marilyn Oliver and husband, Robert of
Machesney Park, Illinois; seven grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters,
Anita Beurer and Leone Sievers; and two brothers, Louis and
William Beurer.
The Parrott and Wood Chapel of Memories of Waterloo, is in charge of

Esther L. Rieken

WELLSBURG—Esther L. Rieken, 80, of Wellsburg, died
on Thursday,
December 4, 2003, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Funeral
services will be held on Saturday, December 6, at the St. Peter's United Church
of Christ, northwest of Wellsburg. Burial will follow in the
church cemetery.
Esther was born on June 4, 1923 in rural Ackley, to John and Anna (Oelmann)
Kappel. She was raised near Ackley. On November 18, 1944, Esther was
united in marriage to Lester Rieken at the St. Peter's United Church
of Christ. Esther was a homemaker and farm wife, living most of
her adult life on the family farm located five miles north of
Wellsburg.
She was a member of St. Peter's, where she was
involved with various woman groups and was a youth leader with
her husband for several years. Painting and ceramics were among
her favorites.
Survivors include one son, Duane Rieken and wife, Kristen of
Ackley; one brother, Robert Kappel and wife, Beverly of Ackley;
four grandchildren, Tara Rieken, Erin Murphy, Annesley Miller
and Jennifer Aldinger; and three great-grandchildren, Cadence
Harms, Layne Aldinger and Haylee Aldinger.
She was preceded in
death by her husband, Lester; her parents; three sisters, Sophie Bartling, Ann Bohlman and Nettie Bohlman; and three brothers,
Wallace, George and Hannis Kappel.

Carl D. Johnson

COULTER—Carl D. Johnson, 77, of Coulter, died on Friday, December 5,
2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Memorial
services will be held on Wednesday, December 10, at 10:30 a.m., at the Morgan
United Methodist Church, rural Dows, with Rev. David Gobeli
officiating. Inurnment will be in the Coulter Cemetery.
Carl was born on May 21, 1926 in Alden, Minnesota, to Orin and Elfreda
(Johnson) Johnson. He attended the Lakota Public Schools. Carl
served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during WW II, from
1943-1945, as a motor machinist mate on the LSM 311. He
received the purple heart when he was wounded while
participating in the Battle of Leyte Island. On June 11, 1949,
he was united in marriage to Avis Mitchell in Mason City. Carl
was a member of the Morgan United Methodist Church. He was
employed by the Maytag Co. in Hampton as an industrial engineer,
retiring in 1982. After his retirement, he owned and operated
Mother's Place in Coulter, where he enjoyed playing pepper and
cribbage. Gardening, woodworking and being a grandpa to the
local kids were among his favorites.
Survivors include his wife, Avis of Coulter; three sons, Greg
of Winthrop, Massachusetts, Tim of Dows and Jeff and wife, Julie of
Ames; two daughters, Kris, and husband, Dennis Pardikes of Palos
Park, Illinois and Linda Johnson of Santa Cruz, California; three
sisters, Betty Johnson of Mesa, Arizona, Marilyn Scott of
Oceanside, California and Marge Koppen of Augusta, Georgia; two brothers,
Harlan of California and Orin (Satch) Johnson Jr. of Red Wing,
Minnesota; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dan; and one
sister, Edele Parker.

Ray J. Rosine

ELDORA—Ray J. Rosine, 59, of Eldora, died
on Friday, December
5, 2003, at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.
Following cremation at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home and
Crematory, memorial services will be held on Saturday, December 13,
at 10:30 a.m., at Dorothy's Senior Citizens Center in
Eldora. Memorials may be directed in his name to the
family.
Ray was born on December 19, 1943 in Hardin County, to Richard
and Cecelia (Ansleme) Rosine. He was raised and educated
in Eldora, where he attended and graduated from the
Eldora High School in 1962. Following graduation, he
attended the University of Northern Iowa. Ray entered
the U.S. Air Force and traveled extensively throughout
the United States and Europe during his 22-year career,
retiring in 1987. He was employed as a carrier for the
Waterloo Courier and did volunteer work for the Share
program in Eldora.
Survivors include his father, Richard W. Rosine of
Eldora; two sisters, Phyllis Kellogg of Des Moines and
Linda Horton of Eldora; one brother, Richard Dean Rosine
and wife, Jenelle of Des Moines; four nephews, Chris
Horton Jr., Willie Kellogg, Joe Kellogg and Mike Horton;
one niece, Trisha Cole; and one great-nephew, Williamray
Cole.
He was preceded in death by his mother; one
brother-in-law, Chris; and his maternal and paternal
grandparents.

Byron Pommrehn

ORANGE CITY, Florida—Byron Jon Pommrehn, 45, of Orange City,
Florida, formerly of Alden, died on Sunday, December 7, 2003, at his home.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, December 20, at 3:00 p.m., at
the
Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ in Alden, with Rev. Bob
Miller officiating.
Byron was born on September 25, 1958, to Leland and Arlene Pommrehn. He
attended the Alden Community School, graduating in 1977. Byron
attended Ellsworth Community College for two years and North
Iowa Area Community College, where he received his degree in law
enforcement. In 1986, he was united in marriage to Nancy Overmohle. The couple lived in Mason City before moving to
Orlando, Florida, where he worked as a security officer for the
Lockheed Martin Corp. until his health prevented him from
working.
Byron was active with the Boy Scouts. He was a member
and an assistant scoutmaster of the Boy Scout Troop No. 610. He
enjoyed working with kids, fishing, camping, watching football
and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy of Orange City; two sons,
Andrew and Matthew, both of Orange City; one daughter, Melissa
of Orange City; five brothers, Leroy and wife, Carol of Des
Moines, Leland and wife, Lorna of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Jerry
and wife, Mary Jo of Alden, Lyle and wife, LuAnn of Rockford and
Gary and wife, Lori of Alden; one sister, Jerrlyn Imsland and
husband, Rodney of Holly Springs, North Carolina; his father-in-law and
mother-in law, Leo and Rosemary Overmohle; and 49 nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; maternal and paternal
grandparents; and two brothers, William and Robert Pommrehn.

James E. Coonley

HAMPTON—James E. Coonley, 93, of Hampton, died on Monday, December 8,
2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Funeral services
will be held on Thursday, December 11, at 1:30 p.m., at the Hampton United
Methodist Church, with Rev. Jerry Miller and Rev. Jon Anderson
officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery. Visitation
will be on Wednesday, December 10, from 3-8:00 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home in Hampton.
James was born on March 27, 1910 in Iowa City, to John and Sadie (Trier) Coonley Sr. He graduated from the Hampton High School. James was
united in marriage to Joan M. Wilson. He was admitted to the
practice of law in 1934 after studying under Judge Evans, then
Chief Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court. James was the Franklin
County Attorney from 1935-1943 and during that time
prosecuted the first successful drunken driving case using a
blood test as evidence of intoxication. He was the Hampton City
Attorney from 1972 until the present time. James was licensed to
practice before the United States Supreme Court.
He was past
president of the Franklin County Bar Association and was also
active at the state level with the Iowa State Bar Association.
He practiced law uninterrupted for 69 years and was still active
in the practice of law at the Coonley & Coonley Law Firm up to the
time of his death. James was involved in several banking
organizations over the years, culminating in the formation of
the United Bank and Trust Company. He was chairman of the board for
the bank at the time of his death. James was a member of Anchor
Lodge No. 191 and was also a member of the El Kahir Shrine. He
was past president of the Hampton Kiwanis Club. James was a
member of the Hampton United Methodist Church. His hobbies
included horseback riding, golf and travel.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Mary Coonley of Hampton; one
son, John E. Coonley and wife, Elaine of Hampton; two grandsons,
John Coonley Jr. and Philip Coonley, both of Hampton; two
nieces, Laurie Warfel of Wheaton, Illinois and Jennifer LaBonte of
Payson, Arizona; one nephew, Mike Wilson of Iowa City; and his
brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Cleve Wilson and wife, Marilyn
of Parkersburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, James Jr.
and Craig; and two brothers, Bob and John.

Tressa L. Hutzell

ELDORA—Tressa L. Hutzell, 95, of Eldora, died
on Monday,
December 8, 2003, at her home.
Funeral services were held on Friday,
December 12, at the Grace United Methodist Church at Floyd.
Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd.
Tressa was born on June 7, 1908 in Floyd, to Edward and
Nellie Mapes. She was raised in Floyd where she
graduated from high school. On June 27, 1931, Tressa was
united in marriage to Glenn Hutzell. The couple made
their home in Eldora. She had been employed by the
Lundy, Butler and Lundy Law Firm, Hardin County Clerk of
Courts Office and retired from the Sween Law Office at the
age of 90.
Tressa was a member of the Grace United Methodist
Church in Floyd and enjoyed her pets and wildlife of all
kinds.
Survivors include her two step-daughters, Darlene Doud
of Tucson, Arizona and Betty Hess and husband, Gerald of
Grundy Center; and close friends, Rod and Michelle
Ryan of Eldora and their daughters, Danille Butler and
Lacey Ryan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; her
parents; and sisters, Theodora and Esther.

Darlene Heetland

ACKLEY—Darlene Mae Heetland, 65, of Ackley, died
on
Tuesday, December 9, 2003, at the Methodist Hospital, Rochester,
Minnesota.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 13, at
10:30 a.m., at the Faith Presbyterian Church, rural Ackley,
with Rev. Tim Diehl and Rev. Larry Hoop officiating.
Burial will be in the Faith Presbyterian Cemetery, rural
Ackley.
Darlene was born on May 16, 1938 in rural Grundy County, to
Alvin and Grace (Muller) Stahl. She received her
education in country school and graduated from the Grundy
Center High School in 1956. After graduation she worked
at the Grundy Center grocery store. Darlene joined the
Colfax Center Presbyterian Church on March 17, 1956. On
December 15, 1958, Darlene married Virgil Heetland at
the Colfax
Presbyterian Church. She was a homemaker and farm wife
on the couple's farm south of Ackley.
She enjoyed music
and for many years gave piano lessons. She worked in the
activities department at the Presbyterian Village from
1990-97 and at the Muller's Tea Room after that. She
was more recently employed at the Sietsema Funeral Home.
Darlene was a charter member of the Faith Presbyterian
Church where she was an organist, Sunday School teacher,
women's Bible study leader, church financial secretary
and WIC officer. She was also a coordinator for the
Rural Activities Program and an active member of the
Fellowship of Christian Farmers.
Survivors include her husband, Virgil of Ackley; a
daughter, Valerie Cook and husband, Jeff of Hubbard; four
sons, Lynn and wife, Lynette of Waukee, Gary and wife,
Lorna of Ackley, Kendall and wife, Maria of North
Aurora, Illinois and Rodney and girlfriend, Jamie Weeks of Sioux
Falls, South Dakota; 10 grandchildren; her parents; three
brothers, Larry Stahl and wife, Carolyn of Grundy Center,
Dennis Stahl and wife, Margaret of Grundy Center and
Curtis Stahl and wife, Peg of Holland.

OMAHA, Nebraska—Beatrice "Bea" Carol Kramer, 80, of Omaha,
Nebraska, formerly of Hampton, died on Wednesday, December 10,
2003, at her home.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December
15, at 10:30 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton,
with Rev. Karl Bollhagen officiating. Burial will be in
the Hillside Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday, December
14, from 1-3:00 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in
Hampton. Memorials may be made to either Trinity
Lutheran Church, Hampton or the local Alzheimer's
Association.
Bea was born on July 7, 1923 at Thornton, to Marius and
Carrie Christensen. She grew up in the Thornton area. On
January 6, 1939, she was united in marriage to Pete Kramer.
The couple farmed in the Thornton/Sheffield area in the
early years of their marriage, until moving to Hampton
in 1955. Bea was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.
She moved to the Parsons House in Omaha in 2001, and resided
there until her death.
Survivors include three sons, Delbert Kramer of Des
Moines, Larry Kramer and wife, Janet of Omaha and Rick
Kramer of Denver, Colorado; six grandchildren; one brother,
Dick Christensen of Rockwell; and numerous nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete; her
parents; and two brothers, Marvin Christensen and Buford
Christensen.

John Neubauer Jr.

ALDEN—John E. Neubauer Jr., 81, of Alden, died
on Thursday,
December 11, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa
Falls.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 15, at
10:30 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Alden, with Rev.
Rick Layman officiating. Burial will be in the Alden
Cemetery. Visitation is on Sunday, from 2-4:00 p.m., at
the Surls
Funeral Home in Alden. Military rites will be conducted
by the Collins-Dunning American Legion Post No. 201 of
Alden.
John was born on September 8, 1922 in Donna, Texas, to John
and Dora (Macham) Neubauer Sr. He attended school in
Donna before moving to Alden when he was 16. On October 9,
1942, he married Mary Nicholas at the United Methodist
Church in Owasa. John served in the U.S. Army during
World War II, under General Patton building bridges.
John had worked for area farmers, Chetwood N & N
Sinclair and then for Dave Lancaster Fabrication. He
enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Mary of Alden; three sons,
Duaine of Jacksonville, Florida, Chester and Laurence, both
of Alden; two daughters, Carol Harms of Alden and Donna
Young of Mt. Ayr; 16 grandchildren; and 33
great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents.

Eleanor Anderson

HAMPTON—Eleanor L. Anderson, 87, of Hampton, died
on Saturday,
December 13, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in
Hampton.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 16, at the Hampton
United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jerry Miller officiating.
Burial was in the Hampton Cemetery.
Eleanor was born on April 2, 1916 at Hampton, to William and Loetta
(Klousia) Shaefer. She was educated in the Hampton High School
and went on to graduate from Iowa State Teachers' College in
Cedar Falls with a teaching degree. In 1948, Eleanor was married
to Carl Hutt in Omaha, Nebraska. She was united in marriage to Wilmer
Anderson in 1976 in Hampton. Eleanor was a teacher for 31 years,
employed the last 18 years by the Hampton Community School
District in the elementary department. She was a member of the
Hampton United Methodist Church, HOA Club, SOS Club and the KYC
Mothers' Club.
Survivors include her husband, Wilmer Anderson of Hampton; one
son, Bill Hutt of Iowa City; two stepsons, Bryan Anderson and
wife, Valerie of Hampton and Jim Hutt and wife, Bev of Sioux
Falls, South Dakota; two stepdaughters, Barb Heilskov and husband, John
of Hampton and Carleen Cypert and husband, Bill of West Covina,
California; and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Carl
Hutt; and one stepdaughter, Delores Duinkerkin.

Ida Meyer

ACKLEY—Ida Meyer, 91, of Ackley, died on Sunday, December 14, 2003, at
the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held on
Wednesday, December 17, at 1:30 p.m., at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church
in Ackley, with Intern Mark Kvale officiating. Burial will be in
the
Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ackley.
Ida was born on July 1, 1912 in Grundy County, to Ludwig and Ida (Matthies)
Cordes. She attended the Spring Valley School in Geneva Township in
Franklin County. On March 12, 1932, she was united in marriage
to Lloyd E. Meyer in Dumont. The couple farmed north of Ackley
for 42 years. Ida was a homemaker and helped with the farm work.
She was a charter member of the Our Savior's Lutheran Church and
Church Women. In 1974, they moved to Ackley, where she lived
until moving to the Heritage Care Center on July 27, 1998. Ida
enjoyed crafts, crocheting, flower gardens and baking for her
grandchildren.
Survivors include one daughter, Frances Fritz and husband,
Marvin of Ackley; one son, Harvey Meyer and wife, Karen of
Valentine, Nebraska; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;
one sister, Sophia Homan of Des Moines; and numerous nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd;
five sisters, Johanna Janssen, Nellie Witte, Helena Tack, Louise
Devries and Anna Kampman; three brothers, Henry, Louie and Chris
Cordes; and one grandson, Mark Fritz.

Rosemary Snider

HAMPTON—Rosemary Snider, 72, of Hampton, died on Monday, December 15,
2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Funeral
services will be held on Thursday, December 18, at 10:30 a.m., at the
Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with Pastor David Nelson
officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery. The family
will receive friends on Wednesday, December 17, from 4-7:00 p.m., at
the funeral home.
Rosemary was born on May 15, 1931 in Hampton, to Randolph and
Maude (Lumley) Zeiger. She was educated in the Swaledale School
System in Swaledale. Rosemary was united in marriage to Ivol
Snider and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Methodist
church. Rosemary enjoyed taking nature walks, playing cards,
dancing and spending time with her family.
Survivors include one son, Kirk Mathews and wife, Liz of Hampton;
two daughters, Karmen Mc Pherren of Clear Lake and Jolene
Huinker and husband, Larry of West Union; her special friend, Joe Boelkes of Hampton; seven grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ivol; and one
brother, Doug.

HAMPTON—Golda Hansen, 98, of Hampton, died on Tuesday, December 16,

Golda was born on April 22, 1905 at West Bend, to Harvey and Ada
Sloan. She was raised at West Bend and graduated from the West Bend
High School. Golda was united in marriage to John Hansen in
Cedar Falls and was a homemaker. She was a member of the
Hampton United Methodist Church, the Amvets Auxiliary and NARF.
Survivors include one son, Roger Hansen and wife, JoAnn of
Hampton; two grandsons, Jim Hansen of Mt. Vernon and Doug Hansen
of Carlsbad, California; three great-grandchildren; and four
sisters, Mae Daubendick of Decorah, Grace Lawman of Somers,
Dorothy Butcher of Des Moines and Mabel Post of Belle Fourche,
South Dakota.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; four
sisters; and one brother.

Darrell Leedom

HAGERMAN, Idaho—Darrell Lloyd Leedom, 65, of Hagerman, Idaho,
formerly of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday, December 16, 2003, at the
Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo.
Darrell's remains
will be cremated and there are no immediate services planned.
Memorials may be directed to his family.
Darrell was born on September 11, 1938 at Kirksville, Missouri, to Lloyd
and Vina (Findling) Leedom. He attended the Novinger Community
Schools in Novinger, Missouri. Darrell served with the Iowa Army
National Guard from 1956-1959, serving with the Headquarters
Battery, 554th FA Battalion in Des Moines. In 1957, he was
married to Bernice Rowland. Darrell was a meat cutter for
Farmland Foods in Iowa Falls until its closing. He then worked
for several other meatpacking plants until he owned and operated
the Yorktown Locker in Yorktown and then the Bedford Locker in
Bedford.
Survivors include one son, Kevin Leedom and wife, Kelly of
Maryville, Missouri; one daughter, Darla Nelson and husband, Lance of
West Jordan, Utah; one grandson, Dakota Leedom of Clarinda; four
step-grandchildren, Adam, Aaron and Megan Dennis and Austen
Mozier, all of Maryville; three sisters, Linda Eastman and
companion, Mick Hanks of Mountain Home, Idaho, Mary Wilburn and
husband, Dave of Twin Falls, Idaho, Bonnie Deitrick and husband,
Jim of Kimberly, Idaho; two brothers, Bill Leedom and wife, Linda
of Filer, Idaho and Bob Leedom of Gerome, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty
Wageman; and one brother, Donald Leedom.

HAMPTON—Kathryn Inez Bradley, 51, of Hampton, died
on Wednesday,
December 17, 2003, at her home in Hampton.
Funeral services will be held on
Saturday, December 20, at 1:00 p.m., at the Abundant Life Chapel in Dows,
with Rev. Bruce Klapp officiating. Burial will be in the
Northlawn Memorial Garden Cemetery in Iowa Falls.
Kathryn was born on March 8, 1952 at Iowa Falls, to James and
Frances (Braun) Bradley. She was raised in Iowa Falls and
graduated from the Iowa Falls High School and the Medical Institute of
Minnesota. Kathryn was employed by the Drop-In Center in Hampton
as an activity coordinator peer.
She was a member of the Abundant
Life Chapel in Dows. She was a Sunday School teacher for many
years. Kathryn enjoyed cats, collecting cat memorabilia, playing
cards, teaching Bible quiz classes and spending time with
family.
Survivors include six brothers, Douglas and wife, Mary and Craig
and wife, Gina, all of Alden, Dennis and wife, Laura, and Scott
and wife, Brenda, all of Popejoy, Danny and wife, Jean, and Thomas
and special friend, Mary Schaefer, all of Iowa Falls; one sister,
Cynthia Johnson and husband, Butch of Hampton; and numerous
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; maternal and paternal
grandparents; and two infant nephews.

ROGERS, Arkansas—Jessie "Mabel" Dodd Kothenbeutel, 89, of Rogers,
Arkansas, died on Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at the Beverly Health Care
Center in Rogers.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 20, at
10:00 a.m., at the Chapin United Methodist Church in Chapin, with
Rev. R. Karl Watkins officiating. Burial will be in the Wayside
Cemetery in Chapin.
Mabel was born on April 25, 1914, to Will and Estella Dodd in Ross
Township. She lived west of Chapin until her marriage to Lester Kothenbeutel in October 1935. The couple farmed west of Chapin,
and later moved to Chapin. In 1996, Mabel moved to Springdale,
Arkansas, to be near her family. She was employed for 26 years as a
cook in the Chapin School and was active in her local church.
Survivors include one son, Warren Kothenbeutel and wife, Chris of
Aurora, Colorado; one daughter, Norma Ubben and husband, Kenneth of
Springdale; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two
brothers, Harold Dodd and Lloyd Dodd, both of Hampton.

CRESTON—Lloyd L. Palmitier, 84, of Creston, died
on Thursday, December
18, 2003, at his home in Creston.
Funeral services will be held on
Monday, December 22, at the First United Methodist Church, Creston, with Rev. Clark Finehout officiating.
Interment will be on Monday, December 22, at 4:00 p.m., in the East Lawn
Memory Gardens east of Eldora. Graveside military rites will be
by the Walter Sayer American Legion Past No. 182 and the Roll
Harless VFW Post No. 3984, both of Eldora. The family will
receive friends on Sunday, December 21, from 2-8:00 p.m., at the Powers
Funeral Home, Creston. Memorials may be
directed to the Creston United Methodist Church or the Green
Valley Hospice.
Lloyd was born on April 13, 1919 in Sioux City, to Lloyd R. and
Cora (Ketchmark) Palmitier. He graduated from the Stuart High School
in 1938. On May 4, 1941, he was united in marriage to Betty L. Crippen in Eldora. Lloyd served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific
Theatre during WW II while Betty made her home in Eldora. After
his discharge in 1945, Lloyd was employed by the Jefferson Bus
Co. in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They moved back to Eldora and he
started working for the Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. In
1968, he transferred to Creston, where he served as the District
Manager, retiring in 1981.
Lloyd served on the Creston City
Council. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the
Elk's Lodge and the Theodore J. Martens Post No. 1797 VFW, all
of Creston. He was formerly a member of the Creston Rotary, the
Eldora Kiwanis Club and was past president of the Creston
Chamber of Commerce and the Crestmoor Golf Club. He was a 50
year member of the Masonic Lodge of Eldora.
Survivors include his wife, Betty of Creston; three sons, David
and wife, Marcia of Ankeny, Steven and wife, Teresa of Sioux
Falls, South Dakota and Jack and wife, Joy of Creston; one daughter,
Cheri May and husband, Dan of Adams, Minnesota; nine grandchildren;
and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Theodora
Weeks; and two brothers, LaVerne and Bobby Palmitier.

ADEL—David Arlo "Gunner" Young Jr., 32, of Adel, formerly of
Iowa Falls, died on Friday, December 19, 2003, at Worthington, Minnesota.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 23, at the Bethel Baptist
Church in Iowa Falls, with Rev. Steven Hill officiating. Burial
was in the Friends Cemetery in Iowa Falls.
David was born on February 8, 1971 in Iowa Falls, to Dave and Mariann (Endriss)
Young. He graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1989 and
attended Ellsworth Community College. David was employed as a
lab technician at Intervet in Adel.
Survivors include his parents, Dave and Mariann Young of Iowa
Falls; one brother, Larry and wife, Julyn of Ackley; one nephew,
Jacob Young of Ackley; one niece, Abbie Young of Ackley; and his
grandmother, Amy Endriss of Sheffield.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Rolland Endriss
and grandmother, Dixie Lowery Jones.

APLINGTON—Dena Lindeman, 100, of Aplington, died
on Friday, December
19, 2003, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.
Funeral
services were held on Tuesday, December 23, at the Christian Reformed
Church in Parkersburg, with Rev. Frank Pott officiating.
Interment was in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington. Memorials
may be directed to the family.
Dena was born on June 13, 1903 in Butler County, to Harm and Swanetta (Mulder) Kramer. She received her education at a rural
school in Grundy County, near Aplington. On February 25, 1931, Dena
was united in marriage to William Lindeman at her parents' home
in Parkersburg. The couple settled on a farm two miles west of
Buck Grove. In 1949, they moved to Aplington.
Dena was a member
of the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg, where she
served on the Ladies Aid and was the oldest living member of the
church. Dena was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, baking, caring
for ill relatives and coffee visits with others.
Survivors include one son, Wenlyn Lindeman and wife, Shirley of
Iowa Falls; two granddaughters, Joie LaFrentz and husband, Raef
of Boston, Massachusetts and Wendy Lindeman of Dallas, Texas; one
grandson, Michael Lindeman of Omaha, Nebraska; one great-grandson,
Nicholas Lindeman of Kansas City, Missouri; and many nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William; her parents;
five brothers, Harm, Henry, John, Lambert and George Kramer; and
six sisters, Swanetta Harms, Grace Oldenburger, Minnie Jansen,
Sena Johnson, Tena Kramer, Trientje Wallerstein and one in
infancy.

WEBSTER CITY—Lyle George Berven, 87, of Webster City, died
on
Saturday, December 20, 2003, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 24, at 10:30 a.m., at
the Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City, with Rev. John Grebner and Rev. Doug Tiffany officiating. There will be
visitation on Wednesday, from 9:00 a.m. until the service time at the church.
Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Graveside military
rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post No 191.
Lyle was born on September 6, 1916 on a farm south of Kamrar, to Severt
and Frankie (Blue) Berven. He received his education at Kamrar,
graduating in 1934. Lyle was employed by Beams Manufacturing
(Electrolux). On June 6, 1936, he was united in marriage to
Viola Smith at Tarkio, Missouri. In October of 1942, he enlisted in
the U.S. Navy and served on a PT boat. Following his discharge,
the couple operated a grocery store at Kamrar. In 1949, they
started farming south of Kamrar on his parents' farm. They moved
to Webster City in 2000.
Lyle was a member of the Trinity Lutheran
Church, charter member of the Kamrar Lions Club and past
president, the Northeast Hamilton School Board and past
president, and the American Legion Post No. 191 of Webster City.
Survivors include his wife, Viola of Webster City; a son, Tim Berven and wife, Kolleen of Webster City; a daughter, Christine
Slauson and husband, Joe of Alden; grandchildren, Roy and Gus Berven, Kyle Kain, Jennifer Holden, Jeannine Kuiper, Julie
Gordon and Jon Slauson; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers,
Boyd Berven of Webster City and Stanley Berven of Abilene, Kansas;
and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Helen
Wilson.

Burdine R. Hahn

HAMPTON—Burdine R. Hahn, 83, of Hampton, died on Sunday, December 21,
2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, December 23, at the Faith Baptist Church in Hampton,
with Rev. Steve Anderson officiating. Burial was in the Allison
Cemetery in Allison.
Burdine was born on December 16, 1920 at Allison, to Ray and Leola
(Hutchison) Hahn. He was raised in the Bristow area and
graduated from the Bristow High School. On February 20, 1946, Burdine was united in marriage to Maxine Cuvelier at Dumont. He
was a farmer and was later employed by the City of Hampton.
Burdine was an active member of the Faith Baptist Church where he
taught Sunday School. Baseball and family time together were
among his favorites things.
Survivors include wife, Maxine of Hampton; three daughters, Lynda
Robinson of Woodberry, Minnesota, Myrna Minger of Dallas Center and
Mary J. Hahn of Amery, Wisconsin; one son, Dana J. Hahn of Anchorage,
Alaska; two sisters, Maxine Chestnut of Clarksville and Betty
Weiland of Dumont; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter; one
sister; and one infant brother.

the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hampton, with
Rev. Marlys Ruth officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton
Cemetery in Hampton.
Shirley was born on June 11, 1930 in Morrison, to Earl and Jenny
(Miller) Gallaher. She was raised in the Fayette area and
graduated from the Fayette High School and Iowa State College. On
September 10, 1950, Shirley was united in marriage to William Rechkemmer at Fayette. She was employed by the Department of
Transportation, drivers license office.
Shirley was a member of
the First Congregational United Church of Christ, where she was
active in the women's fellowship group. Traveling and collecting Hummels and angels were among her favorites.
Survivors include her husband, William of Hampton; one
daughter, Vicki Myer of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one brother, Wally
Gallaher of Arvada, Colorado; two grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Oscar "O.T." Hassman

ELDORA—Oscar "O.T." Hassman, 84, of Eldora, died at his home
on Sunday, December 21, 2003.
Following cremation, memorial services
will be held on Monday, December 29, at 11:00 a.m., at the First United
Methodist Church in Eldora, with Pastor Anne Lippincott
officiating. Private family interment will follow in the Eldora
City Cemetery.
O.T. was born on February 5, 1919 in Seaton, Illinois, to Emil and Mary
(Rush) Hassman. He was raised in Albia, where he graduated from
high school in 1937. O.T. was involved in track, running the
hurdles. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the
Middle East between 1941 and 1945, based in Iran. On May 15,
1950, he was united in marriage to Pauline Dressen at
Marshalltown. In 1953, he moved to Eldora where he worked as a
railroad depot agent for the M & St. L Railroad and then for the
Chicago North Western Railroad.
O.T. enjoyed whittling and was
recognized by having several pictures of his hand carvings
featured in a national whittling magazine called "Chip Chat." He
played the saxophone and violin throughout his life. O.T. had
been a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Jill Street and husband, David
of Rockford, Michigan, Carol Strait and Susan Hassman and husband,
Mark Johnson, all of Eldora; one son, Joe and wife, Gerry of Duncombe; two brothers, Philip of Geneseo, New York and Louis of
Chaska, Minnesota; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Pauline; a son, Billy; a
grandson, Ben; and a sister, Libby Shoeman.

services will be held on Saturday, December 27, at 11:00 a.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home in Hampton, with Rev. Richard Parker and Rev. Art Zewert officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday,
from 9:00 a.m. until the service time at the funeral home. Burial will
be in the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont.
LaDonna was born on August 30, 1934 in Franklin County, to Raymond
and Vera (Wells) Froning. She attended the Hampton High School and
received her GED from NIACC. On June 1, 1952, she was united in
marriage to Galen Viet at Hampton. LaDonna was employed by the
Franklin General Hospital as a supervisor until her retirement.
She was a member of the Neighborhood Bible Church in Hampton.
She enjoyed going to rummage sales, fishing, working and
decorating. Spending time with her grandchildren and her dog and
vacationing at Clear Lake in the summer were among her
favorites.
Survivors include her husband, Galen of Hampton; two sons,
Dennis and wife, Linda and Randy and wife, Holly, all of Hampton;
two daughters, Kristie Meints and husband, Jeff of Sheffield and
Debra Plagge and husband, Tony of Hampton; two sisters, Margaret Huisman
of North Highlands, California and Shirley Siems and
husband, Verlon of Hampton; 12 grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.

Leland F. Vinton

ELDORA—Leland F. Vinton, 86, of Eldora, died on Tuesday, December 23,
2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral
services were held on Friday, December 26, at the First United Methodist
Church in Eldora, with Pastor Anne Lippincott officiating.
Burial followed in the Eastlawn Memory Garden in Eldora.
Leland was born on October 4, 1917 in rural Whitten, to Fred and Alice
(Cakerice) Vinton. He graduated from the Eldora High School and
began farming in the Whitten area. On May 17, 1941, he was
united in marriage to Dorwin R. McKenzie in Princeton, Missouri. They
remained in the Whitten area where Leland raised grain, hogs and
cattle. He retired in the early 1980s and they moved to Eldora,
where he remained until his death. Leland was a member of the
First United Methodist Church and the Farm Bureau.
Survivors include one daughter, Carol Sue Hollis and husband,
Gary of Tuscumbia, Missouri; three sons, David and wife, Marlys of
Indianola, Dan of Grundy Center and Richard of Eldora; nine
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death was his wife, Dorwin; his parents; two
sisters, Lois Vinton and Carol Stonebrook; one brother, Darwin;
and granddaughter, Roni Sue Winters.

on Wednesday, December 24, 2003, from injuries sustained in an
automobile accident.

at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hampton, with
Fr. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont
Cemetery in Dumont. The family will receive friends on Monday, December
29, from 4-8:00 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont.
Venita was born on December 22, 1946 in rural Butler County, to Harold
and Mae (Borneman) Richtsmeier. She was raised in the Dumont
area. Venita graduated from the Dumont High School and attended
college in Kansas. She farmed in the Hampton area. Venita was a
member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Survivors include two sons, Chris Mahler and special friend,
Becky of Hampton and Evan Mahler and wife, Carla of Washburn; one
grandson, Zarek Mahler of Washburn; a sister-in-law, Donnabelle
Richtsmeier of Des Moines; and her aunt and uncle, Raymond and
Betty Wickham of Dumont.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother,
Melvin.

Ervin L. Diekman

APLINGTON—Ervin L. Diekman, 81, of Aplington, died
on Wednesday,
December 24, 2003, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Funeral
services were held on Saturday, December 27, at the First Presbyterian
Church in Aplington, with Rev. Greg Smith officiating.
Ervin was born on August 31, 1922, to George and Anna (Wiegman)
Diekman near Kesley in Butler County. He graduated from the
Aplington High School and attended Luther College for two
years. Ervin played baseball and football in high school and
college. He joined the U.S. Army on March 4, 1943 and served in
Europe during WW II with an Army Field Hospital and was
honorably discharged on November 5, 1945. On March 28, 1943, he was
united in marriage with LaVon Uhlenhopp at Junction City, Kansas.
Following his discharge from the Army, the couple made their
home in Aplington where Ervin joined his father in the family
grocery business. Ervin became a full partner with his brother,
Wayne in the Diekman Brothers Grocery Store. He retired from
the business in 1977.
Ervin was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church in Aplington. He served on the Aplington
City Council and was a volunteer fireman for the Aplington Fire
Department. Ervin was a lifetime member of the Aplington Amvets
Post No. 102. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed listening to
sporting events on the radio.
Survivors include his wife, LaVon of Aplington; one daughter,
Sharon Lindaman and husband, Marvin of Cedar Falls; one son,
Terrill Diekman and wife, Denice of Elgin; four grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren; one brother, Wayne Diekman and wife,
Janice of Aplington; and one sister, Lorene Vietor of
Parkersburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Elmer Diekman.

McGREGOR, Texas—Helen (Kirker) Clemons Braga Johnson, 88, of
McGregor, Texas, formerly of Iowa Falls and other central Iowa
towns, died on Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at the Westview Manor Nursing
Home in McGregor, where she had resided the past two years.
As a
willed-body donor/participant, there will be no memorial at this

Helen's early childhood, as the daughter of Rev. Lucius L. and
Katherine Smith, former chaplain of the Iowa Veteran's Home in
Marshalltown, was spent in numerous small Iowa towns, graduating
from the Dow City High School in 1932. Helen received her Bachelor
of Arts Degree from the University of Texas-Pan American, in Edingburg, Texas, in 1965. Her 33-year career of elementary
public school teaching began in Iowa and included 18 years of
teaching in southern Texas before retiring in Harlingen, Texas
in 1977. In 1939, Helen was united in marriage to James E.
Kirker in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She had served as cateress for the Binford House in Marshalltown in 1977.
Helen is a former member
of the Marshall Rebecca Lodge No. 40 in Marshalltown, a 50-year
member of the Order of Eastern Star-Harlingen Chapter No. 641 in
Harlingen, serving as Worthy Matron five times in various
chapters where she resided. She is past president of Kappa Kappa
Iota National Teachers' Sorority, and past president of the
Auxiliary of the United Spanish War Veterans of Iowa. Helen was
a former member of the First Baptist Church in Combes, Texas,
and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen,
participating in numerous circle groups in various cities. Upon
retirement, she became an active volunteer for the MHMR in
Harlingen, the Visually Impaired Persons and served on the
Harlingen Housing Authority Board for several years. Helen
remained active until her death, organizing rhythm band musical
groups and playing the piano for the enjoyment of others.
Survivors include one son, James (Jim) Kirker Jr. of Miami,
Oklahoma; one daughter, Kae Carlson-Farrell Hineline of Waco; a
granddaughter, Heidi Kae (Kirker) Roderick and family of Naples,
Florida; and three nieces, Dianne (Smith) Davis and family of
Corning, Brenda (Smith) Krough and family of Marshalltown and
Blakely (Smith) Burke and family of Washington, D.C.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Johnson; a
sister, Ruthella (Mrs. Arnold) Smith; and a brother, Quayle
Smith.

Howard Lake

WEBSTER CITY—Howard Kenneth Lake, 82, of Webster City, died
on Thursday, December 25, 2003, at the Hamilton County Hospital in
Webster City.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 29, at
the Foster
Funeral Home in Webster City, with Pastor Ray Artrip officiating.
Burial was in the Cass Township Cemetery, north of Webster City.
Graveside military rites were conducted by the American Legion
Post No. 191.
Howard was born on April 18, 1921, to Charley and Oca (Katsch) Lake
on a farm in Ellis Township in Hardin County. On August 24, 1941,
he was united in marriage to Marcelyn Hudson at Albany, Missouri. The
couple resided in Des Moines where Howard was employed by the A & P
Grocery, moving later to Webster City when he started working
with Brin's Furniture. During WW II, Howard served with the U.S.
Army-Infantry in the Pacific Theatre. Following his discharge,
he drove a gravel truck for Virgil Liittschwager Construction at
Buckeye. Howard had farmed in Ellis Township, worked at Beam
Manufacturing (Electrolux), worked at the Flugstad Elevator,
managed the Lehigh Elevator and worked at the Raven Lumber and
Saw Mill. He returned to Brin's Furniture, where he worked for
several years, followed by employment with Gambles and Von Feldt
Furniture until his retirement. He was a former member of the
Webster City Moose and the American Legion Post No. 191.
Survivors include his three sons, Elba and wife, Jean and Andrew
and wife, Pat, all of Fort Dodge and Kenneth of Webster City; two
daughters, Jane Felts and Lexie Spencer and husband, Michael, all
of Webster City; 11 grandchildren; his special friend, Norma
Lake of Webster City; three sisters, Letha Hanson of Hubbard,
Arleta Evans of Dows and Lois Terry of Colorado Springs, Colorado;
and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcelyn; his parents; a
brother, Emery Lake; and a sister, Gail Brightwell.

Earl Eisentrager

HAMPTON—Earl Leon Eisentrager, 83, of Hampton, died
on Friday,
December 26, 2003, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.
Funeral
services were held on Tuesday, December 30, at the United Methodist Church
in Sheffield, with Rev. R. Karl Watkins officiating. Burial was
in the Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.
Earl was born on March 14, 1920 rural Dumont, to Frank and Lela (Truax)
Eisentrager. He graduated from the rural Dumont school. Earl
served in the U.S. Army in the Western Pacific as a teletype
operator from 1942-46. On December 10, 1941, he was united in
marriage to Mildred Rewerts at rural Ackley. Earl farmed in the
Dumont and Aplington area until 1961, when they moved to a farm
west of Chapin. In 1973, they moved to a farm northwest of
Hampton. Earl was a member of the United Methodist Church in
Chapin. After retirement, he enjoyed attending ballgames of his
grandkids and showing them his livestock, and going south for
the winter months.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred of Ackley; four sons, Dean,
Gene and wife, Julie, Duane and wife, Susan, all of Hampton and
Galen and wife, Marlene of Sheffield; five sisters, Lucille Cassmann and husband, Leroy and Sharon Eilers and husband, Nathan,
all of Hampton, Dorothy Bruns of Dumont, Phyllis Harms and
husband, Harold of Bristow and Beverly Folkens and husband, Henry
of New Hartford; two brothers, Dale and wife, Mary Ann of
Bristow and Richard and wife, Esther of Dumont; eight
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one stepbrother.
The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, was in charge of

Glenn E. Langesen

COULTER—Glenn E. Langesen, 88, of Coulter, died
on Friday, December
26, 2003, at Anthem, Arizona.
Graveside services will be held on Monday,
January 5, 2004, at 10:00 a.m., in the Alden Cemetery in Alden. The
family will receive friends on Sunday, January 4, from 6-8:00 p.m., at the
Linn's Funeral Home Iowa Falls Chapel.
Glenn was born on November 26, 1915 at Alden, to Alfred and Sylvia
(Coy) Langesen. He graduated from the Popejoy Community School
in 1933 and attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.
In 1940, he was united in marriage to Ruth Evans. Glenn was a
farmer and sold seed corn and insurance near Popejoy from 1939
until 1951, when they moved to Austin, Minnesota. After three years,
they moved to New Richland, Minnesota, where they farmed for nine
years, moving to a farm west of Emmons, Minnesota in 1963. In 1990,
they moved to Coulter and spent winters in Arizona for the past
several years.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Anthem; six daughters, Judy Blankenfeld and husband, Dick of Surprise, Arizona, Kay Langesen
and husband, Ray Came of Salem, Oregon, Jean Pyles and husband, Bob
of Mt. Vernon, Peg Shedenhelm and husband, Tom of Cedar Rapids,
Carol Hanson and husband, Larry of Robins, Cathy Coking and
husband, Bill of Anthem; three sons, Al of Beloit, Kansas, Dean of
Lake Mills and Robert and wife, Doreen of Burke, Virginia; 16
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Irene Hackbarth of Dows.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; and one
sister, Velma Mae Finley.

Vera de Neui

WELLSBURG—Vera M. de Neui, 96, of Wellsburg, died
on Friday, December
26, 2003, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.
Funeral
services were held on Monday, December 29, at the St. John Lutheran Church in
Wellsburg, with Pastor Bruce Zimmermann officiating. Burial was
in the Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg. A memorial fund has been
established.
Vera was born on November 26, 1907 in rural Wellsburg, to Ibeling and
Minnie (Wiegman) Harms. She attended country school in rural
Grundy County. On March 14, 1934, Vera was united in marriage to
Ernest de Neui at Wellsburg. The couple farmed near Wellsburg
for 47 years. She loved farming and took an active part in it,
especially enjoying the harvest time. In 1981, they moved to
Wellsburg. Vera was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church, where
she sang in the church choir. Singing and crocheting were among
her favorite activities.
Survivors include her two daughters, Eileen Murra and husband,
Robert and Velma Hippen and husband, Roger, all of Wellsburg; nine
grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernest;
two sisters, Martha Ascher and Lizzie de Neui; and two brothers,
Alvin and Norman Harms.
The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg, was in charge of

Norma Jean Hunt

ALDEN—Norma Jean Hunt, 74, of Alden, died on Friday, December 26,
2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral
services were held on Monday, December 29, at the United Methodist Church in
Alden, with Rev. Rick Layman officiating. Burial was in the Oak
Hill Cemetery, Popejoy.
Norma was born on May 13, 1929 in Iowa Falls, to Lyle and Selma
(Graff) Rash. She graduated from the Popejoy High School in
1946. On October 7, 1946, Norma was united in marriage to Nathan
Hunt at Hampton. She was a homemaker and enjoyed reading. Norma
was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Royal
Neighbors, Oak Hill Cemetery Society and the Alden Legion
Auxiliary.
Survivors include three sons, Steven and wife, Linda and Michael
and wife, Teri, all of Alden and Douglas and wife, Becky of Iowa
Falls; three daughters, Barbara Gardner and Rhonda Davis and
husband, Bill, all of Alden and Pamela Hunt of Williams; 12
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three
step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; two sisters,
Nancy McKinley of Alden and Sandra Hackbarth of Hampton; one
brother, William Rash of Tucson, Arizona; and a sister-in-law,
Joan Rash of Alden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Nathan; two
brothers, Ronald and Allan Rash; a sister, Virginia Willis; a
step-great-grandchild; and a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Hunt.

Ernest E. Basye

FORT DODGE—Rev. Ernest E. "Preach" Basye, 90, of Fort Dodge,
died on Saturday, December 27, 2003, at the Trinity Regional Medical Center
in Fort Dodge.
Memorial services were held on Tuesday, December 30, at the
chapel in the Heritage Apartments of Friendship Haven in Fort
Dodge, with Chaplain Bill Trembly officiating.
Ernest was born on October 10, 1913, to Rev. E. O. and Rose Basye in
the Methodist Parsonage in Winston, Missouri. On May 3, 1936, he was
united in marriage to Mary Mason at Amity, Missouri. Ernest was known
to all as "Preach" and he and Mary shared 67 years of marriage.
They spent their last years together at Friendship Haven in Fort
Dodge. He was an ordained United Methodist Pastor for over 65
years, serving in Westboro, Missouri, Ackley/Parkersburg, Dysart,
Grundy Center, West Union, Glenwood and Early.
Survivors include three sons, Jack and wife, Jeannie of
Scottsdale, Arizona, John and wife, Sandy of Glenwood and Jerry
and wife, Vyrdel of Concordia, Missouri; a daughter-in-law, Sue Basye
of Hampton; a sister, Opal Reidenbach of Lee's Summit, Missouri; nine
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Tommy and Jim.

Howard Werner

HAMPTON—Howard William Werner, 84, of Hampton, died
on Sunday,
December 28, 2003, at his home in Hampton.
Funeral services will be held on
Friday, January 2, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in
Hampton, with Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. Burial will be in
the Allison Cemetery in Allison. The family will receive friends
on
Wednesday, December 31, from 3-6:00 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home in Hampton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be
given to the Hospice of North Iowa or a charitable organization of
your choice.
Howard was born on September 8, 1919 at Allison, to Albert and Ann (Ortman)
Werner. He was raised in Allison and graduated from the Allison
High School. On August 29, 1937, Howard was united in marriage to
Genevieve Roalf at Eldora. Howard farmed for 17 years at
Allison. He was active in the Farm Bureau and Farm Services,
serving as president of both organizations. He was a F.S. tank
wagon salesman in Butler County and later became sales manager
for F.S. Services in Fayette County. Howard became manager of
the Franklin County F.S. and was employed in that capacity for 31
years. For nine years he was councilman and mayor for the City
of Hampton. Howard was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church,
serving as an elder and on the building committee.
Survivors include his wife, Genevieve of Hampton; one daughter,
Sheryol Buchanan and husband, Paul of Escondido, California; a
grandson, Troy Buchanan and wife, Sally of San Jose, California; a
granddaughter, Heidi Adams and husband, Steve of Fallbrook,
California; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Parker Adams and
Cody and Tyler Buchanan; a brother, Robert Werner of Tama; and a
sister, Norma Nehring of Iowa Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Gary Lee; a
foster son, Jerry Mettlin; and one brother, Kenneth Werner.

Harold L. Meyer

IOWA FALLS—Harold L. Meyer, 88, of Iowa Falls, died
on Sunday,
December 28, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 31, at 10:30 a.m., at
the
Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, with Rev. Kenneth Krueger
officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.
Harold was born on May 26, 1915, to Louis and Louise (Helvig) Meyer
at the family farm in Iowa Falls. He attended rural school at
Iowa Falls. On May 26, 1972, he was married to Deloris Olk at
the
Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls. Harold was a farmer and
a mechanic. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa
Falls, and served as elder, financial secretary and head usher.
He worked with clocks and made rugs. Playing golf, pool and
horseshoes, in addition to bowling, rollerskating and travel
were among his favorites.
Survivors include his wife, Deloris; three daughters, Janet
Weibrecht of West Des Moines, Kim Whitmore and husband, Gene of
Iowa Falls and Constance Moehlman and husband, Michael of Iowa
Falls; three sons, Lee Meyer and wife, Debbie of Fairfax, Douglas
Meyer of Denver, Colorado and Mark Nicholson of Hampton; 15
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Estella;
two daughters, Clarine Rater and Jane Elkin; a grandson, Robert
Meyer; a sister, Marjorie Meyer; and an aunt and uncle,
Christina and August Meyer.

CRESTON—Birrell Blythe White, 80, of Creston, formerly of Des Moines,
died on Sunday, December 28, 2003, at her home in Creston.
Memorial services
were held on Friday, January 2, 2004, at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston.
Private burial will be at a later date in the Union Cemetery in Iowa
Falls.
Birrell was born on June 8, 1923, to Ralph J. and May (Wonderly) Harmon
at Iowa Falls. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School. In 1974, she
was united in marriage to Denver T. White in Des Moines. Birrell was a
homemaker. She was employed by Vicky's in Des Moines. Birrell previously
lived in Iowa Falls, Des Moines and Creston.
Survivors include one stepdaughter, Beverly Pierce of Denver, Colorado;
three stepsons, Bill White and wife, Vicky of Des Moines, Jerry White and
wife, Marcia of Creston and Charles Comley and wife, Lorraine of Turlock,
California; two cousins, Margaret Rehm of Rochester, Minnesota and Gene Brown
and wife, Betsy of Iowa Falls; one sister-in-law, Sue Harman of
California; 14 step-grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Jerry
and Wilde Harmon; and a niece, Kathy Harmon.

Fred R. Myers

IOWA FALLS—Fred R. Myers, 75, of Iowa Falls, died
on Monday, December
29, 2003, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral
services will be held on Friday, January 2, at 10:30 a.m., at the Linn's
Funeral Home, Iowa Falls Chapel, with Pastor Steve Hill
officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 1, from 2-8:00 p.m., at the
funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Fred was born on February 23, 1928 at Iowa Falls, to Elias (Mel) and
Lucy Mae (Percy) Myers. He attended the Iowa Falls Community
Schools. Fred served with the U.S. Navy from 1945-1949 on the
USS Princeton. On June 9, 1952, he was united in marriage to
Marlene Rose Ristler at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Fred
was employed by Iowa Electric Light and Power, retiring in 1984.
He also owned and operated Myers Electric in Iowa Falls. Fred
was a member of the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188
and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1331,
both of Iowa Falls.
Survivors include his wife, Marlene of Iowa Falls; one son,
Jerry L. and wife, Nancy of Iowa Falls; one daughter, Julie Herrold and husband, Robert of Eldora; four grandchildren,
Michael Myers and wife, Kristen of Alton, Illinois, Katie Long and
husband, Nick of Indianapolis, Indiana, Gregory Herrold and fiancée,
Nicole Clausing of Waterloo and Sarah Kay Anema and husband,
Jesse of West Des Moines; and one great-granddaughter, Reagan
Scout Long of Indianapolis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorothy
Swanke; and three brothers, Roy, Robert and Vere.
