Former I. F. resident killed in Illinois accidentHUNTLEY, Ill — A crash on Interstate 90 northwest of Chicago Monday afternoon killed a former Iowa Falls man and left an Elgin, Ill., woman with a broken neck and ribs. A copyrighted story in the Northwest Herald newspaper reported that Timothy Rommel, 52, was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, where he was pronounced dead at 6:11 p.m., according to the Illinois State Police. Caritina Monocada-Jaime, 29, also was taken to the Elgin hospital by the Huntley and Rutland-Dundee fire departments, where she was being treated for her injuries. Monocada-Jaime was driving east on 1-90 in a blue 1994 Chevrolet Blazer when she apparently lost control and crossed the median about a half-mile west of the Powers Road bridge, trooper Matthew Harris said. She crashed into the front end of Rommel's silver 2002 Jeep Cherokee as he was driving west on the highway about 3:11 p.m., Harris said. Rommel's wife, Barbara Rommel, was traveling behind Timothy Rommel in a third vehicle. The back of the Blazer was torn from the chassis on impact and came to rest in the ditch between eastbound and westbound lanes. The passenger cab came to rest in the right westbound lane. Ed Rubeck witnessed the accident as he was driving his semitrailer west on the tollway. The Blazer had flipped over and was spinning on its roof in the westbound lane, Rubeck said. He said he comforted a woman, who he assumed to be Barbara Rommel, who was concerned about Timothy Rommel's condition. An Illinois State Police officer said he could not determine whether icy conditions contributed to the accident. He said the road conditions didn't appear to be slippery and that salt trucks had been out. Tim Rommel was a regional director for the Kmart Corp. He is the son of Millard and Molly Rommel of Iowa Falls and is the brother of Barb Ziesman of Iowa Falls. ©Iowa Falls Times-Citizen 2005 |
