IOWA FALLS—Robert "Bob" George Johnson, 91, of Iowa Falls,
formerly of Latimer, died on Saturday, August 1, 2003, at the Valley View
Nursing Center, Eldora.
Private family graveside inurnment of his
cremated remains will be held in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Memorials may directed to the First Congregation Church, Iowa Falls, Iowa.
Robert was born on October 21, 1911, on the Sunnyside Farm south of Iowa
Falls, to Warren T. and Miriam (Pyle) Johnson. In 1915, the family
moved to the Oaklawn Farm five miles southeast of Iowa Falls, where he
grew up. He attended a one room country school for eight years and
graduated from the Iowa Falls Community Schools with the class of 1929, and was the valedictorian of his class. He went to Ellsworth
College for two years. In 1938, he moved to a farm near Latimer,
where he farmed for 36 years. He married Helen Mahoney in Mason City
in 1939.
Robert was active in many organizations including the
Franklin County Board of Education, Franklin County Farm Bureau,
Franklin County Fair Board, Franklin County Cattlemen and Pork
Producers Association, Iowa Shorthorn Breeders, Iowa Cattlemen and
Iowa Pork Producers, Iowa Beef Improvement Association and was a
4-H Club Leader. Bob taught G. I. Classes after World War II. In
1941, he and his father were named Master Pork Producers. Bob had
his own farm management business which he continued until his
retirement. In 1979, he and Helen bought a home in Iowa Falls where
they continued to live.
Survivors include two sons, Jim and wife, Norene of Eldora and Tom
and wife, Sandy of Ackley; four grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen;
his parents, Warren and Miriam Johnson; and two sisters, Margaret
Johnson and Deborah Schwartz.

Ida Tordoff

IOWA FALLS—Ida Frances Tordoff, 95, of Iowa Falls, died
on Saturday,
August 2, 2003, at the Scenic Manor, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will
be held on Wednesday, August 6, at 11:00 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church,
Iowa Falls, with burial to follow in the Union Cemetery. Visitation
will be one hour before the services Wednesday at the church. Memorials
may be directed to the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls, Iowa.
Ida was born on January 17, 1908, on her parents' farm near Aplington,
Iowa in
Butler County, the daughter of Elmer "Guy" and Bessie Roberts
Stockdale. In 1920, the family moved to Iowa Falls. Ida graduated
from the Iowa Falls Community Schools with the class of 1925 and
attended Ellsworth College, Iowa Falls, receiving her teaching
certificate. She taught country school in the Iowa Falls area. On
December 27, 1930, Ida was united in marriage to Mervel Tordoff at Iowa
Falls. She and her husband started farming southwest and then north
of Iowa Falls, until Mervel's death in 1965. She was then employed by
the Stockdale Corporation, Iowa Falls until retiring in 1986. Ida
had been a resident of the Scenic Manor for the last five years.
Ida was
an 83-year member of the First United Methodist Church of Iowa
Falls, a longtime member of the Iowa Falls Women's Club, the Ladies
Social Gathering of Union Cemetery, the Maple Grove Willing Workers
and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Gwen Stockdale of Iowa Falls; two
nephews, Steven and wife, Virginia Stockdale of Iowa Falls and Jerry
and wife, Diane Stockdale of Cedar Falls; two nieces, Sue and husband,
Tim Bruning of Castana and Barbara Stockdale of Iowa Falls; one
step-granddaughter, Ruth Graham of Decatur, Indiana; four step great-grandchildren; and three step great-great-grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mervel in 1965; a son
and daughter-in-law, Robert (1996) and Virgie (2002) Tordoff; and a brother, Elmer
Stockdale (2000).
The Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls chapel has been entrusted with

Wallace Fuller

COLLINS—Graveside services for Wallace Fuller of Collins, will be
in the Jackson Township Cemetery, at 3:00 p.m., on Sunday, August 10. He was
the son of Louis and Edna Fuller from the Owasa area.

Irma Schwarck

ELDORA—Irma Schwarck, 98, of Eldora, died on Monday, August 4, 2003, at
the Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora.
Funeral services
will be held on Thursday, August 7, at 1:30 p.m., at the First Baptist Church
in Eldora, with Pastor Scot Shelburne officiating. Burial will follow
in the Eldora City Cemetery. Visitation is on Wednesday, from 5-8:00 p.m.,
at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Memorials may be directed to
the Children's Home and Family Ministries of Valparaiso, Indiana or to
the charity of choice.
Irma was born on February 28, 1905 in Grundy County, to Chris and Maude (LaRue)
Schwarck. She attended country school until her family moved to
Eldora in 1919. She graduated from the Eldora High school in 1924, then
attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, graduating in 1932. Irma
took the teacher training course in high school and taught at
country school for a year. At the age of 11, Irma accepted Christ
Jesus as her Savior and she was active in the things of the Lord for
all of her young adult life, continuing until the time of her death,
teaching Sunday School, vacation Bible School, youth group and the
Rural Bible Crusade. She also served as housemother for junior girls
at the Lydia Children's Home in Chicago for six years. She was a
member of the First Baptist Church of Eldora.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her brothers, Alonzo,
Martin and Floyd; sisters, Mary Platt, Fannie Maine, Ila Kirkdorffer,
Mildred Kinney and Bessie as an infant.
Many nieces, nephews and
cousins survive her.

ALDEN—Marie Peterson, 91, of Alden, died on Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at
the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held on
Friday, August 8, at the St. John's United Methodist Church in Radcliffe,
with burial in the Alden Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 6-8:00
p.m., at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.

Leona Hertema

MARSHALLTOWN—Leona D. Hertema, 91, of Marshalltown, died
on Friday,
August 8, at the Southridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in
Marshalltown.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August 11, at
the Pursel Davis
Funeral Home and Crematory in Marshalltown. Rev. Barry Holmes of
First Congregational Church officiated. Burial was in the Riverside
Cemetery in Marshalltown. A memorial fund has been established.
Leona was born on April 8, 1912 in Buckeye, to Jay and Blanche
(Stringer) Dougan. She was raised and educated in the Whitten area,
graduating from the Whitten High School in 1930. On June 1, 1931,
she married G. W. Hertema. They made their home in Hubbard, later
moving to Green Mountain. Leona was employed by the Niederhauser
Airport for many years and during this time she attained her pilot's
license. She became a member of the Ninety-Niners, a women's pilots
organization and a member of the Airplane Owners and Pilots
Association.
Leona was active with the Marshalltown Art Association,
Marshalltown Toastmasters, Central Iowa Parliamentarians and the Iowa
Horticultural Society. She was a member of the First Congregation
Church.
Survivors include her brother, James Dougan and wife, Gertrude of
Hubbard; many nieces and nephews, including Renae Bohling and
husband, Eric of Radcliffe; two sisters-in-law; 31 great-nieces and
nephews; and 31 great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in
death by her husband, G. W.; her parents; a sister, Agnes Vaughn;
and brother, Marion "Bud" Dougan.

Norlinn Paine

HAMPTON—Norlinn W. Paine, 79, of Hampton, died on Saturday, August 9,
2003, at his home in Hampton.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August
12, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hampton, with
Rev. Marlis Ruth officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton
Cemetery.
Norlinn was born on October 9, 1923 in Hampton, to Paul Arthur and Blanche
(Bird) Paine. He graduated from the Hampton High School and served in
the U.S. Army during W.W. II. On December 22, 1944, he was united in
marriage to Joan McDowell in Hampton. Norlinn was a farmer his
entire life.
He was a 4-H Leader, a member of the American Legion,
Anchor Lodge and the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Norlinn enjoyed golf, hunting, playing cards and visiting with
friends.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; a son, Michael and wife, Barb of
Geneva; a daughter, Paula Meyer and husband, Duane of Rogers, Arkansas;
two grandchildren, Allison Delperdang of Bancroft and Brandon Paine
of Waterloo; a great-grandson, Dylan Delperdang of Burt; a sister,
Birdell Butson of Geneva; and brother, Marvinn Paine of Mason City.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Birwinn.

John A. Meyer

APLINGTON—John A. Meyer, 84, of Aplington, formerly of
Parkersburg, died on Saturday, August 9, 2003, at the Maple Manor Village
in Aplington, from complication of metastatic cancer of the liver.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, August 12, at
the Hope Reformed Church,
Parkersburg, with Rev. Neal Ooms officiating. Interment was in the Oak
Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg. The family requests memorials may be
directed to the Cedar Valley Hospice or to KNWS Christian radio.
John was born the son of Albert R. and Marie (Bierman) Meyer
on November
22, 1918, in rural Aplington He received his education and graduated
from the Aplington High School in 1936.
John was united in marriage to Frances Pearl Kannegieter on December 18,
1942, at her parents' home near Wellsburg. They began farming near
Bristow and in 1949 moved to the home farm near Aplington. Following
their retirement, they moved to Parkersburg in 1982. John became a
resident of Maple Manor Village in August of 2000, after Frances
passed away.
He was a faithful member through the years of the
Bristow Reformed Church, First Reformed Church of Aplington and Hope
Reformed Church of Parkersburg, where he served at various times on
the Consistory, as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, choir
member, and served on the Mission Board. He was active in the community
where he participated on the FS Board, Aplington School Board
Advisory Council, Kesley Creamery Board, community music group and
the Bicentennial Committee. In his spare time he enjoyed music, his
work and reading his Bible.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald and wife, Janis of Batesville,
Arkansas and David and wife, Diane of Aplington; four daughters,
Jeannette and husband, Richard Griessel of Crawfordsville, Jeanne and
husband, John Camp of Kenai, Arkansas, Mary and husband, Eric Dietrich of
Aplington and Nancy and husband, John Claassen of Iowa City; 16
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lois and husband,
Harley Hartman of Parkersburg; and one sister-in-law, Clarice Meyer
of Erie, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a grandson; his
parents; three sisters; and two brothers.
The Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel of Aplington, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Betty Hoelscher

HUBBARD—Betty Jane Hoelscher, 74, of Hubbard, died on Saturday, August
9, 2003, at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral
services were held on Wednesday, August 13, at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Hubbard, with burial following in the Hubbard Cemetery.
Betty Jane was born on April 22, 1929, to Vern and Esther (Balvanz)
Dubberke. She attended school at Grant No. 3 and graduated from
the Hubbard High School in 1946. On September 20, 1946, Betty was united in
marriage to Merlin Hoelscher. They lived and farmed for many years
in Concord and Grant Townships. She loved working outside and
driving the tractor.
Betty was a member of the St. John's Lutheran
Church and also a member of LWML. She was a strong Christian and
bore witness to her faith every day. Betty enjoyed making quilts for
World Relief and caring for the young and old alike.
She is survived by her two sons, Gene and wife, Debra of Charlotte,
North Carolina and Lonnie and wife, Joan of Radcliffe; two grandsons, Warren Hoelscher of Marshalltown and Brian Hoelscher of Waterloo; one
granddaughter, Melissa Hoelscher of Charlotte; along with many other
relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; brother and sister-in-law, Gilbert and Elva Dubberke; and
nephew, David Dubberke.

DUMONT—Chester C. Card, 97, of Dumont, died on Sunday, August 10, 2003,
at the Dumont Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 13, at
the
Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont, with burial following in the
Dumont Cemetery.
Chester was born on January 2, 1906 at Geneva, to Harry and Minnetta
(Ahrens) Card. He received his education in the Dumont School
System. On December 5, 1923, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Bulten
at Allison. Chester farmed and enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping
and raising exotic animals. He took Dumont kids camping every year,
canoed down the river every Sunday morning to go fishing and went to
Canada with his boys to fish.
Survivors include his three sons, Dallas and wife, Lavonne of
Alexander, Delores "Toot" and wife, Phyllis of Hampton and Robert
and wife, Barbara of Dumont; one daughter, Judy John and friend,
Kenneth Wahl of Des Moines; two daughters-in-law, Henrietta Card of
Allison and Agnes Card of Parkersburg; three sisters, Lorraine Mannatt, Oneata Stackhouse and Overna "Tootie" Card, all of Hampton;
one brother, Harry and wife, Betty of Hampton; 10 grandchildren; 31
great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sons, Clifton and
Donald; a granddaughter, Jolene; a grandson, Duane; one brother; and
four sisters.

Floyd Dirksen

HAMPTON—Floyd "Bud" Dirksen, 91, of Hampton, died
on Monday, August 11,
2003, at the Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield.
Graveside services will
be held on Wednesday, August 13, at 2:30 p.m., at the Lindenwood Cemetery,
rural Geneva, with Merle Wagner officiating. The family will receive
friends from 2:00 p.m. until the service time at the cemetery.
Floyd was born on March 5, 1912 in Alexander, to George and Sadie (Jone)
Dirksen. He attended Alexander schools and served four years in the
Army Medical Corps. On September 9, 1942, he was married to Dorothy Engelkes at Hampton. Floyd was a farmer and enjoyed working with the
land.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; one daughter, Linda Dirksen of
Hampton; and two sisters, Lois Paullus and Ruby Kellison, both of
Hampton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

Joseph Druvenga

PARKERSBURG—Joseph Carl Druvenga, 88, of Parkersburg, died
on Monday,
August 11, 2003, at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center in Cedar Falls.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 14, at
the Christian Reformed
Church, Parkersburg, with Rev. Frank Pott officiating. Military
rites were presented by the Parkersburg American Legion Post No. 385,
with interment in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg.
Joseph was born on January 18, 1915 near Aplington, to Reinhard and Gepke (Mulder)
Druvenga. He attended rural schools near Parkersburg and Renville,
Minnesota, returning to Parkersburg at the age of 18. In September of
1942, Joe entered the U.S. Army and served in North Africa and
Italy, earning three bronze stars. On November 28, 1942, he was united
in marriage to Alice Frerichs in Neosho, Missouri. After his discharge, he
returned to the Parkersburg area where he farmed. Joe was employed
by UNI, working in the physical plant, and owned and operated a
sodding and landscaping service in Parkersburg.
He was a member of
the Parkersburg Christian Reformed Church and the American Legion.
Joe enjoyed traveling, making an eventful European trip in 1984.
He is survived by three sons, Russell and wife, Jocelyn of Dike,
Darrell of Pella and Dallas of Parkersburg; one daughter, Diane
Roberts and husband, Ken of Parkersburg; four grandchildren; three
step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother; two
sisters; and one sister-in-law.
Preceding him in death were his
wife; his parents; and two brothers, Henry and Charles.

IOWA FALLS—Lois I. Hinton, 82, of Iowa Falls, died on Wednesday, August
13, 2003, at her home.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 16, at
the
First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, with Rev. Netha Brada
officiating. Burial was in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.
Lois was born on February 19, 1921 in Fairburn, South Dakota, to Wesley and Grace
(Pitts) Amiss. She graduated from high school at Hot Springs, South Dakota
in 1949. In June of 1942, she was married to Jim Hinton at
Princeton, Missouri. Lois worked at the Met Theater and was shipping
coordinator for Farmland Foods. She was a member of the First United
Methodist Church, EMH Auxiliary and Christian Women's Club.
Survivors include her two sons, Bob Hinton and wife, Lori of West Des
Moines and Steve Hinton and wife, Ruth of Iowa Falls; five
grandchildren, Rees Hinton and wife, Tammy of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jenni Wahl and husband, Chad of Greenfield, Wisconsin, Kelli Kucera and
husband, Jeff of Temperance, Michigan, Brad Hinton and wife, Danielle of
Storrs, Connecticut and Samantha Clewell of West Des Moines; three
great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gerald Amiss of San Diego,
California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents; one
brother; and two sisters.
The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, was in charge of

Steven Kramer

AUSTIN, Texas—Steven C. Kramer, 55, of Austin, Texas, formerly of
Iowa Falls and New Ulm, Minnesota, died of cancer on Friday, August 15, 2003, at
the Seton
Hospital in Austin.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 20, at
11:00 a.m., at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with
Rev. Thomas Henning officiating. Burial with full military honors
will follow in the St. Paul's Evangelical Cemetery in New Ulm. Memorials
are preferred to the Insulin-free world foundation or to the donor's
choice.
Steven was born on February 19, 1948 in New Ulm, to Clayton and Adell
Kramer. He graduated from the New Ulm High School in 1966 and was
active in Boy Scouts, achieving his Eagle Scout Award. On December 14,
1968, he married Bonnie Plagge in New Ulm. He graduated from the Mankato
State University and went on to serve in the U.S. Army. Steve taught
at Ellsworth Community College for 17 years.
He was a member of
the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls and served on the church
council. In 1991, Steve relocated to Austin, where he worked as
administrator and teacher at Austin Community College. He was a
member and officer of the Texas Association of Schools of Art.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; daughters, Amy Baue and husband,
Paul of St. Charles, Missouri and Stephanie Kramer; a son, Joshua of Austin; two
granddaughters, Shyla and Savannah of St. Charles; and numerous
other friends and relatives.
Steve was preceded in death by his
parents; and father-in-law, Elmer Plagge.

Clark Graham

PARKERSBURG—Clark Richard Graham, 49, of Parkersburg, died of heart
failure on Friday, August 15, 2003, at his home.
Memorial services were
held on Tuesday, August 19, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, with
Pastor Paul Nelson officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in
Parkersburg.
Clark was born on May 20, 1954, to Elmer and Leola (Dring) Graham in
Waterloo. Trucking was his life and he was known by many truckers
throughout the state on the CB as "Beer Keg." He retired in 1994 due
to health reasons. Clark was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in
Parkersburg, where he was baptized and confirmed.
Survivors include his father, Elmer of Parkersburg; one sister, Jo
Rider of Cedar Falls; and two nieces, Melissa Aalfs of Cedar Rapids
and Miekka Aalfs of Parkersburg.
He was preceded in death by his mother; his grandparents, Leslie and
Mina Dring and Stanley and Marion Graham; a brother, Keith in
infancy; and one son, Michael Richard in infancy.

Raye Teske

ELDORA—Raye C. Teske, 87, of Eldora, died on Saturday, August 16, 2003,
at the Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, August 19, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora, with
Pastor David Splett officiating. Burial was in the Eastlawn Memory
Garden Cemetery in Eldora.
Raye was born on July 10, 1916 in rural Hardin County, to Charles and
Hattie (Diller) Teske. He graduated from the Eldora High School in 1934.
On January 20, 1938, he married Irene Steinfeldt at Eldora. Raye was a
farmer until his retirement.
He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran
Church, Fellowship Club and Men's Club. He served on the Owasa
School Board, Jackson Farm Bureau, Hardin County Extension Council
and was a Jackson Boys 4-H Leader. He loved to fish, garden and
watch sporting events.
Survivors include his wife, Irene; three sons, Marvin and wife,
Nancy, Leon and wife, Dorothy and Dale and wife, Shirley, all of
Eldora; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one sister,
Faye Bates of Davenport.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
and one sister, Eva Mae Overton.
The Creps-Abels Funeral Home of Eldora, was in charge of

Marvin Campbell

IOWA FALLS—Marvin Russell Campbell, 76, of Iowa Falls, died
on
Saturday, August 16, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa
Falls.
Services were held on Tuesday, August 19, at the First United Methodist
Church in Iowa Falls, with Rev. David Gobeli officiating. Burial was
in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.
Marvin was born on February 18, 1927 in Hampton, to Wendell and Esther
(Lemke) Campbell. He graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1945
and served in the U.S. Navy. On December 22, 1950, he married Amy Mae Bobst at Popejoy. Marvin was a farmer until his retirement.
He was a
member of the Lee Center United Methodist Church in Dows, Dows Lions
Club, NOMADS Volunteers in Mission, in addition to numerous church
and farm organizations. He enjoyed boating, fishing, woodworking and
spending time with his eight grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Amy; two daughters, Connie Ellingson and
husband, Dwight of Iowa Falls and Sandee Wendler and husband, Steve
of Middlebury, Indiana; a son, Mark and wife, Sarah of Osage; eight
grandchildren, Todd and Bryan Ellingson of Ames, Abby Ellingson of
Iowa Falls, Matthew, Alyssa and Kristi Wendler of Middlebury, Indiana
and Simon and Chloe Campbell of Osage; and one brother, Don and wife,
Dora of Klemme.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

ACKLEY—Eleanor Grace Dentel, 98, of Ackley, died on Saturday, August 16,
2003, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.
Funeral services will be held on
Wednesday, August 20, at 11:00 a.m., at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley,
with Rev. Gerald O'Connor and Rev. Kathryn O. Kuhn officiating.
Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Ackley. The family will
receive friends on Wednesday, from 9:30 a.m. until the service time at
the Sietsema Funeral Home.
Eleanor was born on January 26, 1905 in Ackley, to Max and Grace (Hilbrand)
Dentel at Iowa Falls. She worked at the canning factory in Ackley.
Eleanor was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Ackley,
where she was baptized and confirmed. She was a member of the Crescent
Club, Willing Workers and Cradle Roll.
Surviving her is a niece, Barbara O'Connor and husband, Rev. Gerald
of Sarasota, Florida; a grandnephew, David O'Connor and wife, Lisa of
Westerville, Ohio; and a grandniece, Rev. Kathryn O'Connor Kuhn and
husband, Karl of Kiel, Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
and two sisters, Clara Hofmeister and Rose Dentel.

Paul "Boomer" Anderson

KNOXVILLE—Paul "Boomer" Anderson, 79, of Knoxville, formerly of
Iowa Falls, died on Saturday, August 16, 2003, at the Knoxville Veteran's
Home where he was a resident.
There will be no formal services as
his body was donated to medical research.
Paul was born on October 26, 1923 in Iowa Falls, to Lewis and Edna (Buckanow)
Anderson. He attended Iowa Falls Schools, leaving school to serve in
the US Army during WW II. He married Bessie Brinkema of Kamrar, where
they made their home for 30 years. They were later divorced and Paul
moved back to Iowa Falls. Due to failing health, he moved into the
Marshalltown Veteran's Home for a short time and then was
transferred to Knoxville where he lived until his death.
Survivors include two sons, Scotty of Stratford and Lucky of
Gladstone, Missouri; two grandchildren; three brothers, Elmer "John" of
Dayton, Ohio, Ernie of Iowa Falls and Harry "Pete" of Lancaster,
California; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and four sisters, June
Anderson, Bernice Boltze, Pearl Nehring and Louise Ahlberg.

Floyd Mooney

GIFFORD—Floyd E. Mooney, 61, of Gifford, died on Monday, August 18,
2003, at his home.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 21, at
the United Methodist Church of Gifford, with Ronald Goecke officiating.
Burial was in the Sheppard Cemetery, rural Gifford, with full military
honors by the Walter-Sayer Post No. 182 of the American Legion and
the Roll-Harless
No. 3974 of the VFW.
Floyd was born on January 10, 1942 in Union, to James and Evelyn (Anselme)
Mooney. He was raised in several communities in the Hardin-Marshall
county area and graduated from the Eldora High School in 1960. Floyd
was a Vietnam veteran, serving with the U.S. Air Force. On July 15,
1972, he was united in marriage to Joan Christians at Wellsburg. He
worked for Fisher Controls in Marshalltown as a machinist and shop
floor supervisor, retiring after 34 years of service in 2001.
Floyd
was a member of the United Methodist Church of Gifford and the Walter-Sayer
Post No. 182 of the American Legion. Attending auctions, exploring
his family genealogy, researching the history of Gifford and bowling
were some of his interests.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; a daughter, Lisa Mooney of
Mission, Kansas; one son, Christopher of Marshalltown; his mother,
Evelyn Briden and husband, Richard of Janesville; three sisters, DeLores Vasey and husband, Robert, Ada Sizemore and Ardis Mabe, all
of Eldora; and one brother, Donald and wife, Marilyn of Gladbrook.
Preceding him in death was his father, James.

Claude Moody

DUMONT—Claude A. Moody, 83, of Dumont, died on Tuesday, August 19, 2003,
at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Funeral services will be held on
Thursday, August 21, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont, with
Rev. Bob Scholten officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont
Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral
Home on Wednesday, August 20, from 4-6:00 p.m.
Claude was born on May 7, 1920 in Chickasaw County, to Charles and Lizzy (Gerken) Moody. He attended school in rural New Hampton. On
July 4, 1942, he married Frances Mahnesmith at Charles City. Claude
was a farmer who took special interest in his cattle and enjoyed
hunting and fishing with his faithful dog, Sweetie.
Survivors include his wife, Frances; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and four
sisters.

HAMPTON—David L. Hovenga, 60, of Hampton, died on Tuesday, August 19,
2003, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.
Funeral
services were held on Friday, August 22, at the First Christian Church in Hampton,
with Rev. Joe Jones officiating. Burial was in the Hampton Cemetery.
David was born on May 4, 1943 in Dumont, to Swear and Lorraine (Card) Hovenga. He was educated in the Ackley
School System. On January 13,
1962, he was married to Evelyn Schriever at Hampton. David was a
self-employed painter. He was a member of the First Christian Church
in Hampton. His hobbies were hunting and fishing, but his greatest
enjoyment was being with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; three daughters, Donna Uhlenhopp
and husband, Gary of Geneva, Dawn Shuler and husband, John and Debbie Walterman and husband, Jeff, all of Hampton; his mother, Lorraine Mannatt of Hampton; two sisters, Phyllis Frazier of Cedar Falls and
Beverly Perez of Hampton; five brothers, Larry of Denver, Colorado and
Jerry, Jerome, Russell and Paul, all of Hampton; and five
grandchildren.
David was preceded in death by his father; one
sister, Janice; and an infant brother.

IOWA FALLS—Ellen Ann Wickham, 71, of Iowa Falls, died
on Wednesday,
August 20, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August 25, at
the First Christian Church in
Iowa Falls, with Rev. Floyd Davis officiating. Burial was in the Shiloh
Cemetery in Wellsburg.
The family has requested memorials be directed to the Hospice of North
Iowa.
Ellen was born on September 6, 1931 in Iowa Falls, to Albert and Barbara
(Fischer) Daleske. She graduated from the Eldora High School in 1949 and
worked at the Hardin County Savings Bank until she married Dennis Gronewold on March 20, 1953. They lived and farmed near Wellsburg
until Dennis's death in 1973. Ellen left the farm and moved to
Wellsburg and worked for the Grundy Center Newspaper. She was office
manager at the Brenman Insurance Company in Wellsburg. On October 16, 1999,
Ellen was married to Gerald Wickham.
Survivors include her husband, Gerald; two step-children, Martha
Cunningham of Des Moines and Dave and Carol Ducommun and their
children, Devon and Derek of Woodridge, Illinois; an aunt and uncle,
Clarence and Mabel Wright of Ackley; a brother-in-law and a
sister-in-law, Richard and Ardis Ross of Des Moines; and many
cousins.
Ellen was preceded in death by her first husband; and her
parents.

Ronald E. Ulery

ALTOONA—Ronald E. Ulery, 69, of Altoona, died on Thursday, August 21,
2003, at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services
will be held on Monday, August 25, at 10:30 a.m., at the Altoona Funeral
Home. There will be a visitation on Sunday, Aug. 24, from 6-8:00 p.m.
at the funeral home.
Ron was born on June 26, 1934 in Rocky Ford, Colorado, to Laurence and
Fannie Ulery. On September 28, 1961, he married Jean at Rocky Ford. Ron
moved to Iowa in 1977, while working for Farmland Foods and lived in
the Alden and Iowa Falls areas until 1988, when he moved to Des
Moines. He retired from Roberts Dairy in Des Moines in 1999.
Ron was
a member of the Buick Club of America, Teamsters Union Local 387
and was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Air
Force. He was an old car enthusiast.
Survivors include his wife, Jean; a daughter, Cindy and her husband,
Dale Slobaszewski; five brothers, Fred of Camarillo, Texas, Ernest
of Pueblo West, Colorado, Norman of Abilene, Kansas, Byron of Beloit,
Kansas and Dale of Odessa, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; and a still-born son, David.

Cleo Miller

ROWAN—Cleo M. Miller, 97, formerly of the Rowan area, died
on
Thursday, August 21, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing
Facility in Hampton.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 23,
at the United Church of Rowan, with Pastor Janet Wearda officiating.
Burial was in the North Lawn Memorial Garden Cemetery, rural Iowa
Falls. Memorial contributions may be made in Cleo M. Miller's name.
Cleo Marguerite was born on July 2, 1906 on a farm near Rowan, to
William and Nettie (Walker) Duffy. She graduated from the Rowan
Consolidated Schools and attended Iowa State Teachers College in
Cedar Falls. On June 4, 1930, she was united in marriage to Virgil
Miller. The couple met during the six year period she taught country
school in Vernon and Blaine Townships. They farmed in Oakland
Township and later near Iowa Falls. After Virgil passed away in
1960, Cleo spent her time caring for others in Shell Beach,
California
and Faribault, Minnesota, returning to Rowan to retire.
She enjoyed
baking, entertaining the neighbor children, church activities,
quilting club, canasta club, Progress Club and American Legion
Auxiliary.
Survivors include her two sons, Donald and wife, Sylvia of
Albuquerque, New Mexico and Marlin and wife, Delores of Coalinga, California;
one daughter, Kathy Muhlenbruch and husband, Del of Dows; a
daughter-in-law, Allalee Bubeck and husband, Dale of Clarion; a
son-in-law, Floyd Ziesman and wife, Julie of Alden; two sisters,
Dolly Barnes of Long Lane, Missouri and Betty Severson and husband, Don
of Jewell; one brother, Robert Duffy and wife, Wilma of Iowa Falls;
18 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
her husband, Virgil; one son, John Miller; one daughter, Marilyn Ziesman; and two sisters, Susan Hammond of Rowan and Mildred Ketchum
of Alden.

William Schermer Sr.

LATIMER—William George Schermer Sr., 75, of Latimer, died
on Saturday,
August 23, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Funeral
services will be held on Wednesday, August 27, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Paul's
Lutheran Church in Latimer, with burial following in the church
cemetery.
William was born on February 11, 1928 in rural Latimer, to Johannes and
Katherine (Schmitt) Schermer. He attended the St. Paul's Lutheran School
for eight years and graduated from the Latimer High School. On May 23,
1948, he was united in marriage to Lenore Kieper in Chicago, Illinois.
William spent a lifetime of working in the purebred cattle and
feeding cattle business. He was a consultant for Iowa State
University and hosted tours for many delegations from countries
around the world concerning the beef industry. William testified at
several Congressional hearings in Washington D.C. on behalf of the
cattle industry and was called to the White House by President
Carter and met with President Clinton concerning the cattle
industry.
He was a member of many organizations and won many awards, including
the
1982 Iowa Cattlemen's Association Hall of Fame Award; secretary of
the first board of directors for the Iowa Cattlemen's Association,
where he later served as vice president and president and was a
chairman of the marketing committee; National Cattlemen's
Association regional vice president and served on the NCA Board of
Directors; founding board member of the Iowa Limousin Foundation and
served on the North American Limousin Foundation Board of Directors;
named Outstanding Limousin Breeder in Iowa in 1979; chairman of the
Iowa Livestock Health Advisory Council for the Legislature; Board of
Directors for the American National Cattlemen's Association; member
of the Board of Directors for the former Iowa Beef Producers;
president and treasurer for the Franklin County Beef Producers;
Advisory Council for Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids; member and
president of the Board of Directors for the Franklin County Farmer's
Mutual Insurance Association. He served the Franklin County Fair
Board Executive Committee and livestock superintendent for 15 years;
Franklin County beef project leader for 4-H; and Franklin County 4-H
Council Chairman.
William was a longtime member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, sat for
20 years on the Church Council, including the finance committee,
Board of Education, Board of Trustees and Board of Elders. He also
sang in the church choir.
He is survived by his wife, Lenore; one daughter, Connie Pingel and
husband, Ivan of Latimer; two sons, William G. Jr. and wife, Nancy and
Bradley and wife, KaRene, all of Latimer; one brother, Edward of
Latimer; six grandchildren; two step-grandsons; and three
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two
sisters.

HAMPTON—Edna Knoll, 80, of Hampton, died on Sunday, August 24, 2003, at

the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ackley.
Edna was born on January 6, 1923 in Ackley, to Richard and Florence
(Muller) Hartema. She graduated from the Ackley High School in 1942. On
December 25, 1946, she was united in marriage to Earl Knoll at Ackley.
Edna was employed by Diamond Brothers and Bob Pies. She was a member
of the United Methodist Church in Ackley and a chapter volunteer for
FHA at the Iowa Falls Schools.
Survivors include two daughters, Maryetta Hansen of Hampton and
Rosetta Knoll and special friend, Rich of Bradford; two
grandchildren, Chad DeVries of Waukee and Lee Folkerds of Hampton;
five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Knoll and husband,
William of Bradford and Lillian Voy of Ackley; and one brother,
Ervin Hartema of Waseca, Minnesota.
Edna was preceded in death by her
parents; husband; a granddaughter, Angie Woltjer; two sisters,
Amanda Wildeboer and Loretta Schachterle; and one brother, Laurence
Hartema.

DaNelle Groote

WELLSBURG—DaNelle Groote, 48, of Wellsburg, died on Sunday, August 24,
2003, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 27, at 1:30 p.m., at
the Wellsburg Reformed Church, with Pastor Todd Rempe officiating. Burial
will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg.
DaNelle was born on March 26, 1955 in Grundy Center, to Harold and
Isabelle (Harberts) Eiklenborg. She was raised in the Dike area and
graduated from the Dike High School in 1973. DaNelle attended Hawkeye
Tech in Waterloo and later Ellsworth Community College in Iowa
Falls. On April 24, 1973, she was united in marriage to Sheldon
Groote at the Stout Reformed Church. The couple lived in various
Iowa towns, moving to Wellsburg this past summer. DaNelle worked as
a paraprofessional aide at Ida Grove, Montezuma and was just
starting at the AGWSR School.
She was a member of the Sully Reformed
Church in Sully, where she taught Bible School and assisted with
family night activities.
Survivors include her husband, Sheldon; a son, Kyle at home; three
sisters, LuRae Eberline and husband, Jerry of Wellsburg, JoLeen
Eiklenborg of Waco, Texas and CoLeen Pruisner and husband, Darwin of
Boulder, Colorado; a brother, Wendell Eiklenborg of Dike; a
sister-in-law, Mary Groote of Arvada, Colorado; and many nieces and
nephews.

Bruce Lord

Bruce Lord, 84, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Friday,
August 28, 2003, at the Ellsworth
Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.
Bruce has donated his body to the
University of Osteopathic Medicine, Des Moines, Iowa. Services are
pending with the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel.
Robert "Bruce" Lord, was born on June 7, 1919 at Ainsworth, Iowa, the
son of George Monroe and Mary Coulter (Taylor) Lord. He attended the
Ainsworth Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1936. He
graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant, Iowa in 1940
with a Bachelors Degree in Economics. On July 31, 1941, he was
united in marriage to Velma Francis Ward at Maple Island,
Hollandale, Minnesota. Bruce served with the Army Air Corp during
World War II as a bombardier and received the Air Medal. He then
received his Master’s of Elementary Education from the University of
Iowa in 1949. He served as elementary school principal in the
Maquoketa, South Hamilton, and Independence Community School
Systems.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls;
Mason's Orienant Lodge #365, Ainsworth, Iowa; Kaaba Shrine Temple,
Davenport, Iowa; the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1694, Iowa Falls; and the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post #188,
Iowa Falls.
R. B. "Bruce" Lord is survived by his wife, Velma of Iowa Falls; his children, Roger Lord and wife, Mary Ellen of Mesa, Arizona,
Patricia Ann Lord of Iowa Falls, Theodore "Ted" Lord and wife,
Patricia of Iowa Falls and Elizabeth Coningby and husband, John of West
Des Moines; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;
one brother, Bryce Lord and wife, Eleanor of Kalona, Iowa; and two
sisters-in-law, Mary Lord of Bella Vista, Arkansas and Alice Lord

GRUNDY CENTER—August "Junior" Ascher, 62, of Grundy Center, died
on Thursday, August 28, 2003, at the Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial
Hospital in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada.
Funeral services will be held on
Wednesday, September 3, at 2:00 p.m., at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in
Wellsburg, with Pastor Todd Rempe officiating. Burial will follow in
the church cemetery.
Junior was born on June 6, 1941 in rural Grundy County, to August H.
and Anna (Christians) Ascher and was raised on the family farm east
of Wellsburg. He graduated from the Wellsburg High School in 1961 and
attended the Universal Trade School in Omaha, Nebraska. On August 14, 1963,
he was united in marriage to Mary Rops at the Christian Reformed Church
in Austinville. The couple moved to their farm in rural Grundy
County in 1966.
Junior was an active member of the Wellsburg Reformed
Church, where he participated in many church mission trips,
volunteered for many church projects and served as deacon. He was a
member of the Snittjer's Coffee Club in Wellsburg.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; one daughter, Pamela Masiello and
husband, Mike of Ankeny; one son, Brent and wife, Mary of Dike; four
grandsons, Jonathan and Mark Masiello and Jacob and Nicholas Ascher;
two brothers, Ed and wife, Beth and Jim and wife, Diane, all of
Wellsburg; two sisters, Thelma Ringena and husband, John of Steamboat
Rock and Annabells Schriever and husband, Lloyd of Ackley; and many
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one
niece, Teresa Rops.

MESA, Arizona—Alvin D. Madole, 77, of Mesa, Arizona, died
on Thursday, August

Visitation and services were held on Tuesday, September 2, with
burial in the Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Mesa. In lieu of flowers, the
family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society.
Alvin was born on March 27, 1926 in Iowa Falls, to Glenn "Pete" and
Freda Madole. He was raised in Iowa Falls and graduated from the Iowa
Falls High School in 1944. He attended Ellsworth Community College.
Al worked at the United States Post Office in Iowa Falls.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Shirley B. Madole formerly
of Iowa Falls; a daughter, Julie Arms of Salt Lake City, Utah; son,
Michael Madole of Mesa; two brothers, Gordon of Mt. Home, Arkansas and Marlyn and wife, Shirley A. Madole of Mt. Pleasant; and two
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant
daughter, Lynette Ann; and older brother, Kenny Madole.

Dorothy Nolte

HAMPTON—Dorothy R. Nolte, 86, of Hampton, died on Saturday, August 30,
2003, at the Franklin General Nursing Facility in Hampton.
Funeral
services will be held on Wednesday, September 3, at the Hampton United
Methodist Church in Hampton, with Rev. Jerry Miller officiating.
Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.
Dorothy was born on July 30, 1917 in Britten, South Dakota, to Orvis and Emily
(Chadwick) Ellsworth. She graduated from the Aberdeen High School and
Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Dorothy taught
elementary school in South Dakota, Montana, Illinois and Iowa. On
December 23, 1979, she was united in marriage to Elmer Nolte in Hampton.
Dorothy was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church, UMW, church
choir, Treble Cleff Club, Humane Society and Hampton Garden Club.
She enjoyed singing, playing the violin and viola, working in her
garden and caring for her pets.
Survivors include her husband, Elmer; her brother, Dwight C.
Ellsworth of Edge Mont, South Dakota; her sister-in-law, Mary Zoe Nolte of
Cedar Rapids; one step-son, Mike Nolte and wife, Carol of Hampton;
three step-grandchildren, Keith, Matt and Cassie Nolte, all of
Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; husbands, Joseph Weatherer and Clarence Kothe; one
brother, Duane in infancy; two sisters, Clair and Joyce Ellsworth;
and her brother-in-law, David J. Nolte.
The
Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Hampton, was in charge of
the arrangements.
