Pearl McAdams

DOWS-Pearl McAdams, 93, of Dows, died on Saturday, March 1, 2003, at the
Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.
Services will be
held on Tuesday, March 4, at First Lutheran Church in Dows, with burial
in the Fairview Cemetery, Dows. Pastor Paul Thompson officiated.
Memorials may be directed to the Ladies Aid at the First Lutheran
Church.
Pearl was born on November 28, 1909 near Goldfield, where she was raised.
She attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls,
where she was on the diving team and received her teaching
certificate. On October 22, 1937, she married Bus McAdams. She worked
at Bailey's Store in Dows until 1950, when she earned her bachelor
degree from Drake University in Des Moines. She returned to teaching
and coached girl's basketball at Dows.
She was active in the
community as a vocal soloist and choir director at the First Lutheran
Church, Worthy Matron of Eastern Star, and a member of Ladies Aid. She
enjoyed music, flowers and gardening.
She is survived by her husband, J. M. "Bus" McAdams of Dows; two
sons, Fredrick and wife, Vivian of Linn Creek, Missouri and Nile McAdams
and wife, Tara of Stillwater, Minnesota; four grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Edna Glidden of Denver, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and 15 brothers and
sisters.
The Dows Community Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Richard Saylor

HILL CITY, South Dakota-Richard "Joe" Saylor, 60, of Hill City, South Dakota,
formerly of Eldora, died on Saturday, March 1, 2003, at the Rapid City
Regional Hospital in Rapid City, South Dakota.
A Mass of Christian Burial will
be held on Saturday, March 8, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Eldora. Father James Dubert will officiate.
Joe was born on September 25, 1942 in Nora Springs, to Glenn and Angeline Paulus Sailor. He moved with his family to Eldora when he was in
second grade and he graduated from the Eldora High School in 1960. He
was a veteran of the United States National Guard. On August 22, 1975,
he married Annette Rogers Strauss in Eldora. He was employed by the
Hardin County Savings Bank and the Iowa State Training School in
Eldora. In 1975, Joe opened Saylor Plumbing and Heating in Eldora,
which he operated until 1998, when he moved to Hill City, to
work in Mount Rushmore National Park.
He was a member of the Lima
Catholic Church in Hill City and St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Eldora, Knights of Columbus and the Walter-Sayer Post No. 182 of the
American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Annette; two sons, John Strauss and wife,
Emily of Tempe, Arizona and James Strauss and wife, Laurie of Moneta,
Virginia; three sisters, Rita Pagel and husband, James, Donna Allbee and
Karen Priske and husband, James, all of Eldora; a brother, Joe of
Ocean Sorings, Mississippi; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bill and
Mary Stonebraker of Eldora; three grandchildren; and many nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three
brothers, Maurice, Erwin and James.

Adelbert Beal,
91, of Kissimmee, Florida and formerly Eldora, Buckeye, and Alden, Iowa, passed
away on Sunday, March 2, 2003, at the Osceola Regional Medical Center, Kissimmee,
Florida.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m.,
on Friday, March 7,
at the St. John's United Methodist Church, Radcliffe, Iowa, with the Pastors
Dana Williams and Carroll deForest officiating. Burial will be in the Alden
Cemetery, Alden, Iowa. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m., on Thursday evening
at the Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls chapel, with a Masonic memorial service
at 8:00 p.m., on Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to
the charity of your choice. The Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls chapel is in
charge of the arrangements.
Adelbert Beal,
was born on May 8, 1911 in Blackhawk County near Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Melvin
Lowell and Ethyl Grace (Skinner) Beal. He attended the LeGrand and Geneva,
Iowa Community Schools. On October 18, 1936, he was united in marriage to
Dorothy Dodd at the United Methodist Church, Popejoy, Iowa. To this union a
daughter, Carol was born. He started his employment as a farm hand in Hardin and
Wright Counties, he also farmed near Des Moines, Iowa, Alden, Iowa and finally
east of Buckeye, Iowa. Dorothy passed away in 1972. He retired in 1978 from
farming and moved to Eldora, where he was very active in starting Dorothy's
Senior Center.
He was a 3rd Degree Mason and a member of the Radiant Lodge #366,
Alden, Iowa, a past Iowa Masonic District Lecturer and Iowa Masonic Grand
Lodge Officer and a member of the Eastern Star.
Adelbert is
survived by his daughter, Carol Kraus and husband, Steven of
Kissimmee, Florida; two grandchildren, Ryan Kraus and wife, Kimberly of Savanah,
Georgia and Lisa Spires and husband, Michael of Lakeland, Florida; one
great-granddaughter, Sara Anne Spires of Lakeland; two sisters, Clarabelle Branan of Hampton and June Rininger and husband, Eugene of Iowa Falls.
He was preceded
in death by his parents, Melvin and Ethyl Beal; four sisters, Floy Nelson, Laura
Wood, Lois Freitag and Nola Beal (infant); and three brothers, Lee Beal, Cyrus
Beal (infant) and Richard Beal (infant).

ACKLEY-Evalyn "Evy"
Edith Fritz, 76, of Ackley, passed away on Monday, March
3, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, March 11,
at the St. John's United Church of Christ, Ackley, with the
Reverend Michael Dack officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood
Cemetery, Ackley. Visitation will be from 4-8:00 p.m., on
Monday, at the Linn's Funeral Homes Ackley Chapel. The family
will receive friends between the hours of 5-7:00 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
Evalyn Edith Wendland, was born
on
August 17, 1926 at Hawkeye, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar and Pauline
(Dietel) Wendland. Evy was baptized
and confirmed at the Hawkeye Lutheran Church. She attended school in
Hawkeye, but finished her senior year at the West Union Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1943. She attended
Wartburg College, Waverly and then Iowa State Teachers
College, Cedar Falls, where she received her Teaching
Certificate.
She was hired as the fifth grade teacher at Sumner, where she
taught for two years.
On June 22, 1947, she was united in marriage to Martin H. Fritz at
the Hawkeye Lutheran Church. She went with Martin to St. Louis,
Missouri, so Martin could go to Mortuary College. To this union two
children were born, Diane and Paul.
They then lived in Ackley, Iowa, where they were in the furniture and
funeral business for forty years, from 1948 to 1988.
Evy is survived by her husband, Martin H. Fritz of Ackley; two
children, Diane F. Ringenberg and husband, Paul of Walker and
Paul J. Fritz of the Tampa, Florida area; two grandchildren, Eric Ringerberg attending Iowa State University and Amanda Ringenberg
attending the University of Iowa; one sister, Elaine Kristan and
husband, William of Monticello, Kentucky; and one niece, Sharon Dicious and husband, Gary of Monticello, Kentucky.

Larry Teske

GRUNDY CENTER-Larry Gene Teske, 62, of Grundy Center, died
on Tuesday,
March 4, 2003, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy
Center.
Services will be held on Saturday, March 8, at 10:30 a.m., at
the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center, with burial in the East
Lawn Memorial Gardens in Eldora. Pastor Paul Nelson will officiate.
Larry was born on October 3, 1940 in Eldora, to George and Lorena Klaffke
Teske. He graduated from the Eldora High School in 1958 and on June 4,
1961, he married Sharon Risse in Hubbard. Larry was a meat cutter
and meat manager for many years in Grundy Center, Eldora, Ackley and
Marshalltown. On April 23, 2001, he began working for Quakerdale of
New Providence. He was a member of the Jaycees, the Lions Club and
the American Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Shari; two daughters, Ranae Johnson and
husband, Nick of Wichita Falls, Texas and Jolene Teske and husband,
Allen Bunney of San Bernadino, California; a son, Twain of Grundy
Center; two grandchildren, Chelsea and Emily Johnson; and a sister,
Delores Baker and husband, Wilbur of Burlington.

Gaylord Thayer

DES MOINES-Gaylord A. Thayer, 87, of Des Moines, formerly of Iowa
Falls, died on Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the Kavanagh House in West Des
Moines.
Services will be held on Saturday, March 8, at 10:30 a.m., at
the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Alden Cemetery.
Rev. Roselyn Harbart will officiate.
Gaylord was born on September 23, 1915 in Iowa Falls, to Orrie and Olive
Lawtum Thayer. He graduated from the Alden High School in 1933 and Iowa
State College in 1939. He served in the U. S. Air Force from 1943-45, serving in England. On December 23, 1939, Gaylord married Lydia
Peterson in Bethany, Missouri, after her death in 1975, he married
Frances Sutter on December 28, 1978, in Bella Vista, Arkansas. He was office
manager of the USDA while living in Hardin County.
He was a past
member of the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ in Alden, a
current member of the First Christian Church in Des Moines and was an
officer and life member of the Iowa Falls Kiwanis, American Legion, D.A.V. and
the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife, Frances of Des Moines; two daughters,
Patricia Thayer of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Julie Watford of Des
Moines; two stepdaughters, Loretta Lenihan of West Des Moines and
Sheryl Lindeman of Palm Harbor, Florida; a stepson, Skip Andrew of
Ashland, Oregon; 11 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; a son, Gaylord W.;
and a brother, Alvah.

Edward Prescott

H. Prescott, 81, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, formerly of Iowa
Falls, died on Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the Evergreen
Retirement Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial
was held on Friday, March 7, at the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Oshkosh.
Edward was born on
February 16, 1922 at Ellsworth, to George and Dora Tennyson
Prescott. He graduated from the Des Moines North High School
and on June 10, 1943, he married Ruth Johnson in Des Moines.
He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Air Corps Bomber
Squadron from 1942-45. He owned and operated Ed's Super Valu
in Oshkosh from 1963-82, before moving to Iowa Falls where
he owned and operated Ed's Super Valu from 1982-88.
He was a member of the
Elks Club and VFW in Des Moines and a member of the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Oshkosh.
He is survived by his
wife, Ruth of Oshkosh; four sons, George and wife, Judi of
West Bend, John and wife, Jan of Ft. Myers, Florida, Edward
and wife, Sue of West Bend and Ralph and wife, Bernadette of
West Bend; four daughters, Pat Lock of Appellation,
Wisconsin, Frances King and husband, Tom of Scottsdale,
Arizona, Kasey Barlow of Germantown, Wiscosin and Theresa
Delphonse and husband, Marc of Chicago, Illinois; two
sisters, Dorothy Davis and Gertrude Pettigrew, both of
California; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Gerald Bessman

HAMPTON-Gerald D. Bessman, 64, of Hampton, died on Wednesday, March 5,
2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Services will be
held on Saturday, March 8, at 10:30 a.m., at the Hampton United
Methodist Church, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Jerry
Miller will officiate.
Gerald was born on April 4, 1938 at Osage, to Otis and Clara Nicholson Bessman. He attended
the Owasa High School and on August 14, 1992, he
married Barb Woltjer in Hampton. He was a police officer for the
Hampton Police Department and retired in February 2000. Gerald
enjoyed working on small engines, traveling and spending time with
his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Barb of Hampton; his father, Otis Bessman of Iowa Falls; a son, Byron Bessman and wife, Teresa of
Phoenix, Arizona; two daughters, Lorraine LeDoux and husband, Bob of
Mason City and Margaret Bessman-Quintero of Sioux City; three
stepsons, Troy Patterson of Hampton, Darrin Patterson and wife, Kathy
and Kevin Patterson and wife, Carol, all of Waterloo; a brother,
George Bessman of Belle Plaine; a sister, Marjorie Hunt and
husband, Lee of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and 11 grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his mother.

at her daughter's home in Allerton.

Arlene was born on August
30, 1925 in Mitchell County, to Theodore and Grace Naber
Epple. She was educated in country schools and on November
27, 1946, she married Paul Axiotis. She was a homemaker, a
member of the Hampton Gospel Hall and the Hampton Cemetery
Society.
She is survived by a
daughter, Ruth Shoup and husband, Bill of Allerton; a son,
Timothy and wife, Georgia of Larrabee; two brothers, Orrie
Epple of Aredale and Wayne Epple and wife, Lois of Grants
Pass, Oregon; three sisters, Kathleen Harms of Muscode,
Wisconsin, Barbara Swieter and husband, Harvey of Hampton
and Lois Novah and husband, David of Highland, Wisconsin;
six grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and four step
great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband; a son, Steven; two sisters,
Jene Scott and Yvonne Scott; a brother, Ross; and one step
great-grandchild.

Albert Lambertsen

HAMPTON-Albert A. Lambertsen, 69, of Hampton, died on Thursday, March
6, 2003, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.
Services
will be held on Saturday, March 8, at 1:30 p.m., at the Aredale United
Methodist Church, with burial in the Lindenwood Cemetery, rural Geneva.
Rev. Michael Shaffer will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials
may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa Hampton Chapter.
Albert was born on December 26, 1933 at Popejoy, to Anton and Lillian Buge
Lambertsen. He graduated from the Popejoy High School and served in the
Korean War. On April 23, 1954, he married Mabel Howard at the Little
Brown Church at Nashua. He was a farmer and a member of the
volunteer Hansell Fire Department and the Dows Legion.
He enjoyed
fishing at his cabin in northern Minnesota, listening to bluegrass
music, and his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel; two sons, Mike and wife, Vicky of
Rockwell and Dennis "Buck" and wife, Pat of Aredale; a daughter,
Sherry Peterson and husband, Dwight of Dumont; two brothers, Roland Lambertsen of Ackley and John Lambertsen of Tucson, Arizona; and nine
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters;
and a brother.

Monte Potter

IOWA FALLS-E. Monte Potter, 71, of Iowa Falls, died
on Thursday, March
6, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Services
were held on Tuesday, March 11, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa
Falls, with burial in the Love of Christ Lutheran Church in Mesa,
Arizona. Rev. Kenneth Krueger officiated.
Monte was born on April 28, 1931 in Harlan, to Elmer and Grace
Christiansen Potter. He graduated from the Harlan High School and Iowa
State University in 1956. He lived in Marion for 11 years and worked
at United Fire and Casualty Company in Cedar Rapids. On December 13,
1953, he married Joan Jerde at Clarion. They moved to Iowa Falls in
1967 and he was part-owner of Harris-Potter Insurance from 1967-93.
He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls
and past president of the Iowa Falls Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; a son, Todd and wife, Michelle of
Mesa, Arizona, a daughter, Katy Clark and husband, Jere of Phoenix,
Arizona; two granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Ashley Potter of Mesa; a
sister-in-law, Jan Jerde of Clarion; and a nephew, Joe Jerde of
Clarion.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Samuel Heath

ALDEN-Samuel Thomas Heath, 85, of Alden, died on Thursday, March 6,
2003, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Services were held on
Monday, March 10, at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley, with burial in
the
Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ackley. Rev. Patricia Connor officiated.
Samuel was born on March 23, 1917 in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, to Willie
and Annabelle Heath. He was in the First Cavalry Division from 1941-45. On July 25, 1970, he married Beula Wait in Munfordville, Kentucky.
He was a retired farmer.
He is survived by a son, Charles of Louisville, Kentucky; a daughter,
Anna Brown of Fairdale, Kentucky; a stepson, Larry Becker of
Clarksville; a stepdaughter, Cleta Wilson of Dumont; four
grandchildren; and a half sister, Ruby Friend of Louisville, Kentucky.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Beula.

August Hartwig

BRADFORD-August "Gus" Hartwig, 86, of Bradford, died
on Thursday,
March 6, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Services will be held on Monday, March 10, at 1:30 p.m., at
the Surls Funeral
Home in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Maynes Grove Cemetery, rural
Bradford. Rev. David Gobeli will officiate. Visitation will be at
the funeral home on Sunday, March 9, from 3-5:00 p.m. Military rites
will be provided by the Hampton Veteran's Memorial Association.
Gus was born on August 27, 1916 in Thornton, to Jesse and Lena Smith Hartwig. He attended rural Thornton schools and served in the United
States Army from 1942-45. On September 11, 1942, he married Virginia Zerble at Mason City. He managed the Iowa Falls skating rink floor
for over 25 years and did road maintenance for Franklin County for
27 years. From 1946-2002 he raised poultry and had been poultry
superintendent for the Iowa State Fair for 47 years.
He belonged to
several poultry clubs, was involved with the Iowa Falls Share
program and enjoyed flowers, especially iris.
He is survived by two daughters, Anita Andersen of Coulter and Judy
Branan of Mason City; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren;
and a sister, Minnie Guilick of Allison.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; his wife, Virginia; and a brother, Wesley Hartwig.

James McClellan

ELDORA-James Henry McClellan, 75, of Eldora, died of cardiac arrest
on Thursday, March 6, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa
Falls. Memorial services will be at a later date in Bayard.
Jim was born on January 9, 1928 in Bayard, to Ralph and Eva Marchant
McClellan. He served in the United States Navy from 1945-47 and
was stationed on the USS Appalachian, the Press Ship for air and
underwater explosions of atomic weapons in the Pacific Theater of
Operations. He was an avid reader of military history. On June 25,
1952, he married Eileen Perkins and they were later divorced. Jim
moved to Eldora in 1955 and started his own business in 1966,
McClellan Plumbing and Heating.
He was a member of the Eldora Fire
Department, past president of Eldora Jaycees, a former member of the
Eldora City Council and a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by two sons, David McClellan of Eldora and Mark
McClellan and wife, Jane of Iowa Falls; three grandchildren, Jamie
McClellan of Eldora and two grandsons, Mark and Aaron McClellan of
Iowa Falls; a brother, Donald of Des Moines; and a sister,
Charlotte Wallace of Stuart.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; a brother, Etsel; and two sisters, Pauline McClellan and
Hazel Marohn.
The Cedar Memorial Funeral Home of Cedar Rapids, is in charge of
the arrangements.

LeRoy Burgin

WEBSTER CITY-LeRoy Burgin, 81, of Webster City, formerly of Iowa
Falls, died on Friday, March 7, 2003, at his home.
Services were held on
Tuesday, March 11, at the Church of Christ with burial in the Graceland
Cemetery, both in Webster City. Pastor Ray Artrip officiated.
LeRoy was born on November 14, 1921 at Iowa Falls, to William and Guendola
Cox Burgin. He graduated from the Iowa Falls High School and moved to
Webster City in 1939, where he farmed. On July 12, 1942, he married Zelpha Flowers in Missouri. They continued to farm, retiring to
Webster City in 1984.
He was a member of the Church of Christ, Farm
Bureau, the Master Pork Producers and the Webster City Co-op. His
hobby was gardening, especially onions and tomatoes, and camping.
He is survived by his wife, Zelpha; three sons, Ronnie and wife,
Charlene of South Carolina, Gary and wife, Rolanda and Rick and wife, Denise,
all of Webster City; a daughter, Sue Burtnett and husband, Doug of
Webster City; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three
sisters; and a brother.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a
grandson; and an infant brother.

Delta Folkerds

HAMPTON-Delta Folkerds, 71, of Hampton, died on Friday, March 7, 2003,
at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell.
Services were
held on Tuesday, March 11, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton, with
burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Rev. Jon Anderson officiated.
Delta was born on May 2, 1931 in Hampton, to Raymond and Vera Wells Froning. She graduated from
the Hampton High School and on September 11,
1947, she married John Folkerds at Dumont. During her 50 years of
marriage she was a homemaker and worked at various jobs while her
husband worked for the Maytag Company in Hampton.
She was a member
of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and enjoyed bowling, camping and her
musical animated collection.
She is survived by a son, Roger and wife, Linda of Grinnell; a

ELDORA-Roma Lou Thies, 74, of Eldora, died on Saturday, March 8, 2003,
at her home.
Services will be held on Wednesday, March 12, at 1:00 p.m., at
the First Christian Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the St. Mark's
Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Rev. Floyd Davis will officiate.
Roma was born on January 25, 1929 in Williams, to Dwight and Myrtle Wang
Swift. She graduated from the Alden High School in 1947. On March 28,
1948, she married Dale Thies at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
They farmed and she worked at Schager Produce from 1948-50. In
1971, they purchased the Eldora Motel and she ran it until 2003. She
was a member of the First Christian Church in Iowa Falls.
She is survived by a son, Dennis of Aurora, Colorado; two daughters, Rosann Hinz and husband, Randy of Steamboat Rock and Tania Foley and
husband, Ed of Granville, Illinois; five grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; three sisters, Verdonna Ellingson of Iowa
Falls, Shirley Oelmann and husband, Don of Iowa Falls and Jeanni
Janes and husband, Ted of Roland.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, Dale; a great-grandson; a sister, Deloris Roelfs; and a brother, Leland Swift.

HUBBARD-Mildred Inger Ohnemus, 94, of Hubbard, died
on Saturday, March 8, 2003,
at the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard.
Services were held on Tuesday,
March 11, at the St. John's Evangelical Church in Hubbard, with burial in
the Tipton Norwegian Lutheran Cemetery, Hubbard. Rev. Matthew Rueger
officiated.
Mildred was born on December 29, 1908, to Jacob and Engie Ersland Towley.
She attended country school and graduated from the Buckeye High School
in 1928. She assisted in her parents' home a number of years and on
March 11, 1945, she married Earl Ohnemus of Melcher. She worked for
Rath Meat Processing for five years and they moved to Burlington,
where her husband was in the security department of the Iowa
Ordinance Plant. After his retirement, they moved back to Hubbard
and in 1996, she moved into Cedar Ridge in Iowa Falls. She entered
the Hubbard Care Center in 1998.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Kathrine Towley of Waterloo;
and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband in 1987; two sisters, Dorothy Abrams and Gladys Kielsmeier; and three brothers, Theodore, Harold and Warren Towley.

CHAPIN-Margaret Jean Green, 83, of Hampton, died on Sunday, March 9,
2003, at her home in Chapin.
Services will be held on Thursday, March
13, at 2:00 p.m., at the Chapin United Methodist Church, with inurnment
at a later date in the old Chapin Cemetery. There will be no
visitation. Rev. Dick Parker will officiate.
Margaret was born on September 16, 1919 in Hampton, to Wayland and Amy Heuermann Little. She graduated from
the Hampton High School and on November
3, 1941, she married Lindy Green at Atchison, Kansas. She worked
part-time as a motel desk clerk at the Gold Key Motel in Hampton.
Margaret enjoyed camping with the Wigwam and Wagon Club.
She is survived by a son, Lewis "Gene" and wife, Heidemarie of El
Paso, Texas; a daughter, Dorathy Mae Hodgin and husband, John of
Seneca, South Carolina; a sister, Elizabeth Hempel of New Brighton, Minnesota;
eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four step
great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; and one step
great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; and one step great-grandson.

ELDORA-Frank R. Williams, 79, of Eldora, died on Wednesday, March 12,
2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Services
were held on Tuesday, March 18, at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora,
with burial in the Eastlawn Memory Garden in Eldora. Pastor Anne
Lippencott of the Eldora Methodist Church officiated.
Frank was born on November 2, 1923 in Sidney, to Everett and Edna Jenkins
Williams. He moved to Marshalltown as a teenager. While in
Marshalltown he worked as a maintenance man at the Marshalltown
Hospital for 26 years. He moved to Eldora in 1970. Frank was a
talented woodcarver, painter and photographer and his work was
displayed at several art exhibits at the Fisher Community Center in
Marshalltown.
He enjoyed country music and playing the guitar. He
attended the United Methodist Church in Eldora.
He is survived by five children, Mike, Dianne, Debra, Kathy and
Steve who all live out of state; a sister, Joyce Lacey and husband,
Dick of Marshalltown; and two brothers, Jack Williams and wife,
Mildred of Montour and Ted Williams and wife, Meredith of Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marjorie; and a
brother, Richard.

on Thursday, March

Church, Iowa Falls, with Father Jim Dubert officiating. Burial will

Esther Virgilia Larson, was born
on September 7, 1912 at McHenry,
North Dakota, the daughter of Wilihelm August and Ingeborg (Karlsbraaten) Larson. She graduated from
the Hampton Community Schools with the
class of 1930. She attended Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls and the
Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, receiving her teaching
certificate. She taught rural country school for four years
southwest of Coulter. On September 4, 1935, she was united in marriage to Anthony
Francis McEvoy at Kansas City, Missouri. To this union two children were
born, Anthony Jr. and Ann. After marriage Esther had worked as a
secretary/bookkeeper for the State Savings and Loan in Hastings,
Nebraska, along with being a great housewife and mother.
She was a
member the St. Mark Parish of Iowa Falls and a member of her church
guild.
Esther McEvoy is survived by her son, Tony McEvoy and wife,
Carolyn of Wayne, Nebraska; her daughter, Ann McEvoy of Garden
Grove, California; two grandchildren, Anthony "Andy" McEvoy and wife,
Janet of Des Moines and Stacey Baalman and husband, Steve of Topeka,
Kansas; and two great-grandchildren, Zoey Belle McEvoy of
Des Moines and Matthew Harley Baalman of Topeka.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilihelm and Ingeborg Larson; one sister,
Sophie K. Borcherding; and two brothers, Walter H. McEvoy and Virgil
McEvoy.

Herb Miehe

WATERLOO-Herb R. Miehe, 75, of Waterloo, formerly of Iowa Falls,
died of congestive heart failure on Thursday, March 13, 2003, at his
home.
Services were held on Monday, March 17, with burial in
the Fairview
Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Waterloo AMVETS Post No.
19 and the Evansdale AMVETS Post No. 31.
Herb was born on December 27, 1927 in Waterloo, to Herbert and Luella Burk Miehe. He graduated from
the East High School in Waterloo and the
University of Northern Iowa and Gustavus Adolphus College. He
married Wanda Pagel on February 27, 1953 in Oelwein. He served in the U.S.
Marine Corps during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart for
wounds received in the war and also the Korean Medal of Honor. Herb
was a former insurance agent in Iowa Falls. He retired as a
supervisor at John Deere in 1987.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda of Waterloo; two sons, Michael Miehe and wife,
Cindy of Waterloo and Burk Miehe and wife, Julie of Buckingham; five
grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Fred Miehe.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and a niece.

IOWA FALLS-Clara Fraser, 94, of Iowa Falls, died on Friday March 14,
2003, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home.
Services were held on Tuesday,
March 18, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, with burial
in the Northlawn Memory Gardens, Iowa Falls. Rev. Ken Krueger
officiated.
Clara was born on July 1, 1908 in Dekalb, Illinois, to Paul and Hanna Neubauer. She attended school in Hubbard and married Ronald Fraser
in Bradford on July 4, 1928. They owned and operated Fraser's Inn in
Alden for many years. They moved to Waterloo in 1941, where Clara
worked at Allen Memorial Hospital until she retired in 1976. She
moved into Scenic Manor in September 2001.
She is survived by two sons, Don and wife, Jill of Buckeye and
Darrell and wife, Doris of Imboden, Arkansas; four sisters, Elnora Paul
of Swea City, Louise Heller, Thelma Andersen and Ruth Pekarek and
husband, Bob, all of Iowa Falls; two brothers, Leo Neubauer and wife,
Helen of Iowa Falls and Paul Neubauer and wife, Fern of Kearney, Missouri;
nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ronald; two
sons, Duane and Lyle; and a daughter-in-law, Judy Fraser.

Diane Kay Panthen, was born on November 15, 1952 at Eldora, Iowa, the
daughter of Eugene and Sharon Panthen. She attended the Eldora
Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1970. She was united in marriage to Steven Eggleston, Sr. in 1970
and they
were later divorced. On June 8, 1980, she was united in marriage to
Lowell Arthur Decker. She was employed as a dietician with the Heritage Care Center,
Iowa Falls and Maple Manor Nursing Facility, Aplington. She
was involved in HEP (Help Elderly People), 4-H and the Boy
Scouts of America, serving 7 years as Unit Commissioner and was a
past-vice president of the Iowa Falls Jayceets.
Diane Decker is survived by her husband, Art Decker of Faulkner; her father, Eugene Panthen and wife, Nancy of Eldora; her
mother, Sharon Rowen of Eldora; a son, Steve Eggleston, Jr. and wife,
Anita of Iowa Falls; three step-children, Darla Eighmey and husband,
John of Iowa Falls, Lori Grave and husband, Jason of Holland, Iowa
and
Anthony Decker of Iowa Falls; twelve grandchildren; two sisters,
Ruth Berends of Ackley and Jean Waterson of Eldora; and a brother,
David Panthen and wife, Rochele of New Providence, Iowa.

June was born on June 29, 1905 in Popejoy, to William and Mae Ohler
Walton. She graduated from the Dows High School and attended Iowa State
Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She was a teacher in rural Alden
and Oakland Township Schools. She married Edward Boyington at
Galena, Illinois on October 15, 1932. June was a member of the Popejoy
Methodist Church.
She is survived by a sister, Dotha Evans of Austin, Minnesota; and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three
sisters, Fern Walton, Otsie Trousdale and Hazel Olson; and three
brothers, Faye, Glen and Seth Walton.

Harold Franklin Ott

Harold Franklin Ott, 96, of Iowa Falls, passed away
on Sunday, March
16, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, March 19, at
the First Baptist Church, Iowa Falls, with burial to follow in the Union
Cemetery, Iowa, Falls. Military honors will be provided by the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post # 188, Iowa Falls. Visitation will be
from 5-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday evening, at the Linn's Funeral Homes,
Iowa Falls Chapel. Memorials may be directed to the family. The
Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel is in charge of
the arrangements.
Harold Franklin Ott, was born on January 13, 1907 near Union Star,
Missouri, son of William Thomas and Emma Williams Ott. He graduated
from the Union Star High School in 1925 and attended the Missouri Business
School in St. Joseph, Missouri for 9 months. A farmer in his early adult
years in Missouri, he experienced early-life sadness including the
death of three infant sons and ending of a marriage. He accepted his
calling to the ministry in 1934. He was ordained at the First
Baptist Church in Union Star, Missouri, on May 24, 1936. He entered what
is now the Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Kansas,
in 1938 and received the Th. G.
In the fall of 1938, he enrolled in the South West Baptist College,
Bolivar, Missouri, graduating there in 1940 with the AA Degree. During five
years there he pastored six half-time churches and one full time
church at Billings, Missouri, for 23 months. Following the work at
Billings, he entered district missionary work. He served the Dallas
County Association in Missouri and Miller County Association, Missouri
until October, 1942.
At the onset of WW II he volunteered for service and was commissioned
as First Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps. He received
his chaplain's training at Harvard University. During his thirty-six
months tour of duty he was stationed eighteen months overseas duty
in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, in Alaska. During his many
assignments, he was Flight Chaplain for (actor) Jimmy Stewart in
Sioux City, Iowa, where they served together until the flight
squadron departed for the European theater.
Honorably discharged in 1946, he located in Springfield, Missouri and
attained his AB Degree from Drury College. He held a student
pastorate at Nixa, Missouri and Willard Baptist Church, Willard,
Missouri, while
working on his degree.
He re-enlisted in the United States Air Force on February 24, 1949
and was assigned duty as wing chaplain over the Alaskan Command at
Great Falls, Montana. On April 30, 1950, he was united in marriage
to Martha B. Sarsten at the First Baptist Church in Great Falls and
on August 2, 1950, adopted her young son, Gerald.
In August, 1950, Harold was transferred to the United States
reception center, Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He
received his second honorable discharge on September 7, 1951, with
the rank of Captain.
He returned to the Central Seminary and attained his BD
Degree and
did additional graduate work toward his master's degree and held
student pastorates at Cowgill, Santa Rosa and Morton, Missouri.
Thereafter, Harold's service to the church included:
First Baptist Church, Mound City, Kansas 1953-56,
First Baptist Church, Tribune, Kansas 1956-1959,
First Baptist Church, Edinburg, Missouri 1959-61,
First Baptist Church, Lakeland, Missouri 1961-63,
First Baptist Church, New Home, Missouri 1963-64,
First Baptist Church, New Salem, Missouri 1964-65,
First Baptist Church, Leon, Iowa 1965-66.
A
long-time resident of Iowa Falls since 1977, Harold and Martha were
members of the First Baptist Church. Harold also was a life member
of the American Legion. Prior to arriving in Iowa Falls he also
served as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America.
He is survived by his son, Gerald Ott and
his wife, Jodie; two granddaughters, Jalene Megchelsen and her
husband, Thomas and Janese Ott Ceron and her husband, Miguel; and
four great-grandchildren, Thad and Jalise Megchelsen and Miguel "Mikey"
and Gabriel Ceron; and several nephews and nieces and grand-nephews
and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Geneva (Ott) Abbott and
Leona (Ott) Bryant; his beloved wife Martha B. Sarsten Ott; and
three infant sons from his first marriage - Harold Vincel, Deryl
Gene and Alvas Daton Ott.

Melvin Crabtree, 68, of Iowa Falls, passed away
on Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at the Mercy
Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, at the First United Methodist
Church, Iowa Falls, with burial to follow in the Alden Cemetery,
Alden. Visitation will be from 2-8:00 p.m., on Friday, at the
Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel, with the family present to
receive friends between the hours of 5-7:00 p.m. Memorials may
be directed to the family. The Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls

Melvin DeZell Crabtree, was born
on March 21, 1934 at Zion,
Illinois, the son of DeZell Melvin and Grace Elizabeth (Dreyer)
Crabtree. He was confirmed at the Popejoy United Methodist Church in 1947. He attended 1st through 3rd grade at
the Ellis Community Country
School and then the Popejoy Community Schools, graduating with the
class of 1952. He attended Ellsworth Community College, graduating
with an Associates of Human Services Degree in 1982. He served with the United States Army from February 8, 1955 to
February 7 1957 and the United States Army Reserves from February
8, 1957 to January 31, 1963. He farmed north of Alden, for many
years and had worked for Farmland Foods, Iowa Falls for 13 years
and the Railroad Express Agency for many years. He worked as an
intercity missionary with the Sandvick Center and Hospitality House,
Minneapolis, Minnesota from 1982-1994, after graduating from
Ellsworth College, returning to Iowa Falls. He was last employed by
the Iowa Falls Community School District as a Bus Driver until his
death.
He was a member of the Church of the Open Bible, Iowa Falls
and had served on the Deacon Board, as a Sunday School Teacher,
Pianist and Organist. He enjoyed all sports, model trains and gardening.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Pearl Elizabeth Crabtree of Iowa
Falls; one son, Jerald L. Peet and wife, Phyllis of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Rose Marie Meester and husband,
Myron of Holland, Iowa, Jean Elizabeth Crabtree of Forest City and Teri Kasischke of Iowa Falls; twenty grandchildren; twelve
great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Ziesman and husband, Vern
of Alden, Allalee Bubeck and husband, Dale of Clarion, Janet Bartlett and husband, Steve of Fort Dodge; two
brother-in-laws, Wallace Gorder of Iowa Falls and John Geddes of
Gunnison, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.
He Was preceded in death by his parents, DeZell and Grace
Crabtree; two sisters, Lorraine Gorder and Ellen Geddes; and one

OSAGE-Ellen Ruhde, 33, of Osage, died on Thursday, March 20, 2003, of
cardiac failure at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
Funeral
services were held on Monday, March 24, at the United Church of Christ in
Osage, with interment in Manilla on March 25. Rev. Robert Melhorn
officiated.
Ellen was born on February 19, 1970 at Fort Dodge, to Don and Jan Pettigrew Ruhde. She graduated from
the Iowa Falls High School in 1988 and from
the University of Northern Iowa in 1993. On September 3, 1994, she
married David Kutz in Iowa Falls. Ellen taught Spanish and English
at the Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne High School and at the Osage High School. She
also coached speech activities and was sponsor of the National Honor
Society.
Ellen was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma women teachers
society, PEO, and the Osage Education Association. She enjoyed
school activities, scrap booking, collecting and corresponding with
family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, David Kutz of Osage; her parents,
Don and Jan Ruhde of Iowa Falls; a sister, Erin Peterson and
husband, Jason of Des Moines; a nephew, Brice Peterson; her
parents-in-law, Don and Julie Kutz of Clare; two brothers-in-law,
Keith Kutz and wife, Jennifer of Atoka, Tennessee and Phil Kutz and wife,
June of Jacksonville, Florida; and four nephews, Michael, Thomas,
Dakota and Matthew.

David Peterson

DUMONT-David L. Peterson, 70, of Dumont, died on Thursday, March 20,
2003, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Services were held on
Saturday, March 22, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hampton, with
burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Father Jim Miller officiated.
David was born on August 29, 1932, to Alex and Lillie Graff Peterson at Popejoy. He graduated from
the Geneva High School in 1950 and on August
29, 1953, he married Berneta Reicherts in Waterloo. He and his wife
were farmers near Sheffield until moving to their farm near Dumont.
He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Hampton. David
was active in the Dumont Telephone Company, ASCS Committee, and a
former member of the Dumont School Board, the Aredale Elevator Board
and the National Guard.
He is survived by his wife, Berneta of Dumont; four sons, Dennis
and wife, Janice of Bristow, Dean and wife, Mary, Daniel and wife,
Teresa and Dwight and wife, Sherry, all of Dumont; three daughters,
Debra Miller and husband, Dalen of Dumont, Donna Boots and husband,
Bob of Pella and Dawn Peterson of Atlanta, Georgia; two sisters, Pat
Cooper and husband, Loren of Dows and Beulah Schuldt and husband,

David Masiker

HAMPTON-David R. Masiker, 61, of Hampton, died on Friday, March 21,
2003, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.
Services were
held on Monday, March 24, at the Church of Christ in Hampton, with
burial in the Sheffield Cemetery. Rev. David Nelson officiated.
David was born on August 15, 1941 at Clarion, to Rudolph and Ida Lord Masiker. He graduated from
the Hampton High School and attended Hamilton
Business College in Mason City, where he graduated. On October 14, 1962,
he married Phyllis Knapp at Sheffield. He was a gas station
attendant for a few years then worked as a cost accountant at REC in
Hampton for over 29 years, until retiring in 1995.
David was a
member of the Church of Christ in Hampton. His hobbies were fishing,
reading and playing with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Hampton; two daughters,
Sherri Fitzgerald and husband, Michael of Mason City and Deborah Masiker; a son, Michael Masiker of Waterloo; a sister, Alice
Charlton and husband, Richard of Fort Smith, Arkansas; and four
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant
son; and one brother in infancy.

Floyd Clemens

DUMONT-Floyd L. Clemens, 72, of Dumont, died on Friday, March 21,
2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Services
were held on Monday, March 24, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in
Hampton, with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Rev. Jon Anderson
officiated.
Floyd was born on September 17, 1930 in Butler County, to Harry and
Elizabeth Harms Clemens. He graduated from the Dumont High School and
served in the United States Navy as a airplane mechanic during the
Korean Conflict. On July 22, 1953, he married Olga Anderson at the
Little Brown Church in Nashua and they were later divorced. Floyd
was a mechanic and also did farming and excavating.
He was a member
of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton. His hobbies were dancing,
fishing and garden work.
He is survived by a son, Nicholas of Hampton; a brother, Harley
and wife, Ruth of Naperville, Illinois; a brother-in-law, Wayne
Zimmerman of Bristow; a special friend, Jeanette Borchardt of Nora
Springs; one granddaughter; one grandson; and six nephews.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his former wife; a daughter; and
one sister.

Vivian Wickham

Vivian Wickham, 83, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Saturday, March
22, 2003, at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services
will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, March 25, at the
Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel. Visitation will be from
6-8:00 p.m., on Monday, at the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls
Chapel.
Vivian Mills, was born on December 25, 1919 at Iowa Falls, Iowa, the
daughter of Francis O. and Lela (Lake) Mills.
She attended and graduated from the Iowa Falls Community Schools and
attended Ellsworth College for two years.
Vivian had been married to Lester M. Brown for three years, they
were divorced. On May 11, 1944, she was united in marriage to Leslie
J. Wickham at Sioux City, Iowa. Vivian was employed as a secretary
for McGladrey Accounting, CPA of Iowa Falls. She was a former member
of the Averine Rebekah Lodge of Iowa Falls.
Vivian is survived by one daughter, Florene Jay and husband, Jerry of
Henry, Illinois; one son, James Wickham and wife, Elaine of St. Paul,
Minnesota; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Lela Mills;
her husband, Leslie Wickham; one sister, Wanda Boyington; and one
brother, Erwin Mills.

PARKERSBURG-Frank Melvin Wilkens, 72, of Parkersburg, died
on Tuesday,
March 25, 2003, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.
Family
graveside services will be held in the Oak Hill Cemetery in
Parkersburg.
Frank was born on April 4, 1930 near Parkersburg, to Willie and Tisha
Timmer Wilkens. He received his education in a rural school near his
home and on December 17, 1950, he married Tena Endelman at the St. James
Lutheran Church in Allison. They farmed near Clarksville, then moved
to Tripoli before moving to the home place at Parkersburg. He also
worked for the county besides farming. He retired in 1985 from
farming. He enjoyed working on tractors, machinery and cars and
especially enjoyed nature.
He is survived by a son, Gary and wife, Sandy of Nashua; three
grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two step
great-grandchildren; a brother, Alvin and wife, Mildred of Stout;
and two sisters, Frances Frieling and husband, Clarence of Parkersburg
and Karen Stone and husband, Tom of Waterloo.
The
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, was in charge of

Roger Busma

GRANGER-Roger Harlan Busma, 60, of Granger, formerly of the
Dumont-Hampton area, died on Thursday, March 27, 2003, at the Mercy
Hospital in Des Moines.
Services will be held on Wednesday, April 2, at 1:30 p.m., at the Dumont
Reformed Church in Dumont, with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Rev.
Bob Scholten will officiate.
Roger was born on October 11, 1942 at Bristow, to Harmon and Esther Garrels Busma. He graduated from
the Dumont High School in 1961 and
attended Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls. After college he worked
with his father in the portable feed grinding service. On December 7,
1979, he married Sandra Stewert at Hampton. He was employed at the
Farmers Elevator in Dumont and Alexander before working for Murphy's
Trucking in Hampton for 15 years. The past 14 years he has been with
the Majestics in Altoona.
Roger was a member of the Dumont Reformed
Church and enjoyed outside activities, especially fishing and
gardening. His hobby was working on semi tractors.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra of Granger; three daughters,
Becky Ringler and husband, Jon of Boone, Shelly McConnell and husband,
Mike of Granger and Vicki Busma of Hampton; five sons, James Busma
and Steven Busma, both of Granger, Keith Busma, Scott Busma and Dan Busma, all of Hampton; an adopted daughter, Laurie Bancroft and
husband, Kevin of Perry; an adopted son, Billy Stewert of Perry; his
mother, Esther Busma of Dumont; a sister, Kay Busma of Hampton; 10
grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and seven adopted
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father; and one
brother, Keith.

Astrid Fagervik

WILLIAMS-Astrid I. Fagervik, 94, of Williams, died on Saturday, March
29, 2003, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Services will
be held on Wednesday, April 3, at 1:30 p.m., at the St. Paul's Lutheran
Church in Williams, with burial in the Williams Cemetery. Rev. Tom
Hunt will officiate.
Astrid was born on May 4, 1908 in Blekinge, Sweden, to Olof and
Mathilda Johansson Dahlquist. She came to America in 1928, living
with two brothers, Carl and Allen in Chicago. On March 24, 1940, she
married Arne Johan Fagervik in Chicago. Astrid was a homemaker and a
member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, ladies aid and the birthday
club. She was also custodian of the St. Paul's Church.
She is survived by two sons, Arne and wife, Kathy and Roger and wife,
Sheryl, all of Blairsburg; nine grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; four sisters, Rut Olsen and Ella Sellman, both
of Sweden, Maja Olson of Plymouth, Minnesota and Doris Rillver of
Sweden; two sisters-in-law, Magnund Dahlquist of Sweden and Grace
Fagervik of Fergus Falls, Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, Arne; four brothers, Einer, Carl, Allen and
Gerdif Nels; and an infant brother and sister.

LATIMER-Earl Johansen, 86, of Latimer, died on
Saturday, March 29, 2003, at
the North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.
Services were held on
Tuesday, April 1, at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Coulter, with
burial in the Coulter Cemetery. Rev. Mary Peterson officiated.
Earl was born on February 15, 1917 at Coulter, to Chris and Minnie Riis
Johansen. He attended the Latimer Country School. On May 19, 1945, he
married Neva Iseminger in Spencer. They farmed in the Latimer area
and Earl was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Coulter. He
had a love for horses and his family.
He is survived by his wife, Neva of Latimer; two daughters, Earlene
Morgan and husband, John of Scottsdale, Arizona and Denise Parks and
husband, Ron of Cedar Falls; two sisters, Della Agnew and husband, John
of Clear Lake and Dorothy Thomsen of Clear Lake; a sister-in-law,
Vera Johansen of Northfield, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Cathy and
Chip Morgan and Ben, Tom and Josh Parks.
He was preceded in death by
his parents; and a brother, Lewis.

Marci M. Maiwald

Marci M. (Waldron) Maiwald, age 59, of Rapid City, South Dakota, passed away
on Sunday,
March 30, 2003, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. She is formerly
of Ackley.
Vigil services were held on Tuesday, April 1, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral
Home in Rapid City. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on
Wednesday, April 2,
at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City, with
Msgr. William O'Connell presiding. Inurnment followed in the Mt. Calvary
Cemetery in Rapid City.
Maiwald was born on September 23, 1943 in Lemmon, South Dakota,
the daughter of Thomas S. and Elizabeth Mary (Carlin) Waldron. The
family moved to Rapid City in 1952. She graduated from the Cathedral High School in
Rapid City. She graduated in 1965 from Briar Cliff College in Sioux
City. Maiwald taught English and French for 36 years, most of which were
in the Ackley-Geneva and AGWSR School Districts. She later completed
a Masters of Science in Educational Leadership at Drake University
in Des Moines. As a French teacher, she received a scholarship from
the French government to study abroad for six weeks. She started the
Auberge de Jeunesse, a French language immersion weekend, held
annually for high school students.
Maiwald also is given credit for introducing 'I-Search' research
papers and various student seminars.
She was an active member and lay Eucharistic minister at St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Ackley.
Maiwald is survived by her sons, Tom (Amy) Maiwald of Decatur, Georgia and
Bob Maiwald of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren; brother, Bob (Ileen)
Waldron of Stillwater, Minnesota; and sister, Pat (Dan) Kennison of Rapid
City, South Dakota.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and one
sister.
A
memorial has been established through the AGWSR Dollars For
Scholars, Ackley, Iowa.

Robert L. Robertson

Robert L. Robertson, 77, of Alden, Iowa, passed away
on Monday, March
31, 2003, at the North Iowa Mercy Medical Center, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, at the
Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel. Private burial will be at a
later date. Visitation will be from 2-8:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the
Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel, with the family receiving
friends between the hours of 6-8:00 p.m. Memorials may be
directed to the family. The Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls
Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Robert L. Robertson, was born on March 19, 1926 at Owasa, Iowa, the son
of Elmer and Ella (Moore) Robertson. He attended the Owasa Community
Schools.
Robert served with the United State Navy from June 6, 1944 to May
26, 1946, during World War II, serving on the NTS Farragut.
On July 9, 1949, he was united in marriage to Grace Kruger at
Waterloo, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Jim and Carol.
He worked as a maintenance man and front-end loader operator for
Iowa Limestone, Alden, Iowa, for 15 years retiring in 1986. He had
previously worked for the Macy and Alden, Iowa Coop Elevators for
more than 30 years.
Robert Robertson is survived by his wife, Grace Robertson of Alden; one son, Jim Robertson and wife, Denise of Alden; one
daughter, Carol Allen and husband, Ron of Popejoy; four
grandchildren, Keith Robertson and wife, Shavon of Iowa Falls, Chad
Robertson of Alden, Stephanie Robertson of Alden and Sarah Kittleson
and husband, Ben of Portland, Oregon; three
great-grandchildren, Haley and Taylor Robertson of Iowa Falls and
Cody Robertson of Alden; one brother, James "Bud" Robertson of
Long Beach, California; and one sister-in-law, Betty Robertson of
Hemet.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Ella Robertson;
and one brother, William "Bill" Robertson.

Ted Wesenberg

DOWS-Ted Weld Wesenberg, 49, of Dows, died on Monday, March 31, 2003, at his
home from complications of acute leukemia, after surviving a bone
marrow transplant in 1986.
Memorial services were held on Saturday,
April 5, at the Morgan United Methodist Church, rural Morgan
Township with Pastor Tony Hershey officiating. Private inurnment
will be held in the Morgan Township Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be directed to the Dows Community and Convention
Center Fund at United Bank and Trust in Dows.
Ted was born on April 14, 1953 in Clarion, to Rodney and Ruth Weld Wesenberg of rural Dows. He attended school in Dows and and skipping
his senior year he graduated in 1970, attended the University of
Northern Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1974, with
a double major in anthropology and art history. From 1976-1979 he
was director of personnel for Bell Helicopter in Iran. When he
returned to the United State, he attended Drake University where he
earned a master's degree in education. He taught school in Santa
Barbara, California until he became ill with lymphoma. He returned to
Iowa in 1985, where he met his longtime companion Criss Gilbert. He
was accepted in an experimental program at the Dana Farber Cancer Center
in Boston, Massachusetts in 1986 and recovered enough to teach English as a
Second Language in Hiroshima, Japan, for a year and returned to Iowa
in 1987. He then began a long period of community service to Dows.
He is survived by his mother, Ruth; life partner, Criss Gilbert; two
brothers, Tom Wesenberg and wife, Marcia and Tim Wesenberg and wife,
Mia, all of Dows; three nieces, Nicole Wesenberg, Naomi Wesenberg
and Susan Wesenberg; two nephews, Terry Wesenberg and Tanner
Wesenberg; and godsons, Devon Kelly and Shane Kelly of Ames.
He was
preceded in death by his father, Rodney; and a brother, Terry.
The
Dows Community Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
