HAMPTON—Gerald R. Buss, 85, of Hampton, died on Thursday, May 1, 2003,
at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Services will be held on
Monday, May 5, at 10:30 a.m., at the Hampton United Methodist Church,
with burial in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Rev. Jerry Miller
will officiate. Military services will be provided by the Hampton
Memorial Association. There will be no visitation.
Gerald was born on March 31, 1918 at Dows, to Frank and Sarah Roths
Buss. He graduated from the Hampton High School and served in the United
States Army in World War II. On December 8, 1946, he married Vivian
Coyle at Nashua. He was an electrician for the United Hydraulics Company
and a driver for Liquid Grow, both in Hampton.
Gerald was a member
of the Hampton United Methodist Church and the Hampton American
Legion. He enjoyed woodworking and yard work.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian of Hampton; three sons, Gary
Buss and Byron Buss, both of Hampton and Daryl Buss of Iowa City; a
granddaughter, Hayley Montes of Hampton; and a great-granddaughter, Makayla Montes of Hampton.
He was preceded in death by his parents
and a sister.

Dorothy Mae Stewart

ACKLEY—Dorothy Mae Stewart, 76, of Ackley, died on Saturday, May 3,
2003, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Memorial services
will be held on Thursday, May 8, at 10:00 a.m., at the Our Saviour's Lutheran
Church in Ackley. Visitation will follow the services. Inurnment will be
in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Bristow.
Dorothy was born on October 10, 1926 at Nashua, to Howard and Mable
McElroy Hicok Smith. She graduated in 1944 from the Nashua Community
Schools and attended Gates Business College in Waterloo for three
years. On October 12, 1946, she married George Stewart in Waterloo. She
had been a telephone operator early in her life and she and her
husband owned and operated the Lake Region Motel at Longville,
Minnesota from 1978 until retiring in 1992. She was a member of the Our
Saviour's Lutheran Church at Ackley.
She is survived by her husband, George of the Heritage Care Center
in Iowa Falls; a son, Thomas of Junction City, Oregon; a daughter,
Sheryl of Ackley; a foster daughter, Marlys Kostle of Monona, Wisconsin;
five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Phyllis Huxsol of
Charles City; and three brothers, Harold Hicok of Nashua, Lowell
Hicok of Mason City and Bill Hicok of Willington, Minnesota.
She was
preceded in death by her parents.

Richard John Kaldenberg, 66, of Iowa Falls, passed away on
Sunday, May 4,
2003, at his rural Iowa Falls home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, May 7, at the Linn's
Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from
2-8:00 p.m., at the Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel
with the family present to receive friends between 6-8:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family.

the arrangements.
Richard John Kaldenberg, was born on August 3, 1936 at Iowa City, Iowa,
the son of Gerard Paul and Vera Mae (Ward) Kaldenberg. He attended
schools in Memphis, Missouri. On August 6, 1961, he was united in
marriage to Margaret Ann Clatt at Hitt, Missouri. Richard was a
truck driver owning R & M Trucking and had driven for Stokley
Foods, Ackley and Walt Lowry of Council Bluffs. He was a
member of the Richland Baptist Church, Hitt, Missouri.
Richard is survived by his wife, Margaret Kaldenberg of Iowa Falls;
three daughters, Connie Richtsmeier of Iowa Falls, Anita Eggleston
and husband, Steve of Iowa Falls and Lannette Dunn of Winthrop;
two sons, Jerry and Terry Kaldenberg, both of Iowa Falls; seven
grandchildren; and two brothers, Gerald Kaldenberg of Hitt,
Missouri and Willard Kaldenberg of Eugene, Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerard and Vera Kaldenberg;
one brother, Donald Kaldenberg; and one sister-in-law, Alberta Kaldenberg.

Kenneth Hoelscher, 73, of Popejoy, Iowa, passed away
on Sunday, May 4,
2003, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at
10:30 a.m., on Thursday, May 8, at the First United Methodist Church, Popejoy. Burial will be
in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Popejoy.
Visitation will be from 4-8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Linn's
Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel, with the family present to receive
friends between the hours of 6-8:00 p.m. There will be a
Masonic Memorial Service at 8:00 p.m. following the visitation. Memorials
may be directed to the family. The Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel has been
entrusted with the arrangements.
Kenneth Frederick Hoelscher, was born
on January 30, 1930 at Eldora,
Iowa, the son of Henry Gustav and Ethel Alva (Norton ) Hoelscher.
He attended the Mason City, Iowa Community Schools. He served with
the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1952
with the 23rd Infantry, 2nd Division. On March 14, 1954, he was
united in marriage to Carolyn Lorraine Hillman at the St. John's
Lutheran Church, Fairbank, Iowa. Kenneth was the owner operator of Hoelscher Oil Company, Popejoy, from 1969 to 1978. He had also
been a truck driver for Mickow Truck Lines, Melton Truck Lines and
had worked for Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach California, King's
Food in Ames, Iowa and Ken's Phillip 66 in Ames.
He was a
member of the American Legion Post # 201, Alden and the
Arcadia Masonic Lodge # 249, Ames.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Carolyn Hoelscher of Popejoy; five daughters, Jacqueline Hoelscher of Des Moines,
Deborah Harvey and husband, Michael of Gramby, Colorado, Diane Husted
and husband, Rocco of Alden, Dawn Schwieger and husband, Brad of
Williams, Colleen Ross and husband, Jon of Dows; one son,
Bruce Hoelscher and wife, Karen of Iowa Falls; fourteen
grandchildren; four great-grandsons; one step-great-grandson; one
step-great-granddaughter; one sister, Shirley Meyer of Cucamonga,
California; one step-brother, Jerry Deckard of Clear Lake; one
step sister, Janice Easley of Mason City; and two
sister-in-laws, Norma Hoelscher of Laporte City and Fern Hoelscher of Williams.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ethel Hoelscher; his step-mother, D'Lda Rolls Deckard Hoelscher; an infant
son, Wayne Allen Hoelscher; four brothers, Bernell Hoelscher, Loren
Hoelscher, Merlin Hoelscher, Bernard Hoelscher; and two
brother-in-laws, Floyd Easley and Donald Meyer.

Russell Riggins

HAMPTON—Russell Lyle Riggins, 90, of Hampton, died on Sunday, May 4,
2003, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility at Hampton.
Services will be held on Wednesday, May 7, at 10:30 a.m., at the Trinity
Lutheran Church in Hampton, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev.
Karl Bollhagen will officiate.
Russell was born on May 12, 1912 at Dougherty, to Ross and Helen Wilson
Riggins. He served in the United States Army in World War II and on
July 30, 1957, he married Isabelle Sorenson in Mason City. He was a
carpenter by trade. Russell was a member of the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Hampton and a 50-year member of the Latimer American
Legion. His hobby was traveling.
He is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Craighton of Hampton; a
brother, James Riggins and wife, Marion of Eldora; three sisters,
Betty Raines of Victor, Montana, Dorothy Garcia and husband, Leo of LKailua-Kona, Hawaii and Marvyl Clemens and husband, Gordon of Union;
and a granddaughter, Brittany Craighton of Hampton.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; his wife; and three brothers.

F. Reisinger, 78, of Iowa Falls, died at the Scenic manor Nursing
Home in Iowa Falls, on Sunday, May 4, 2003, after a long battle with
lung cancer.
Graveside services in the Dobson Cemetery, Garwin, will be
held on
Saturday, July 19, at 2:00 p.m., with CH (Major) Craig A. Burch,
Chaplain, United States Army officiating. The Linn's Funeral Home in
Iowa Falls, is in charge of the arrangements.
Eleanor was born on December 8, 1924, to John and Goldie Thurston at their
home in LeGrande. In 1946, she married Eugene Reisinger and worked
for over 30 years as a telephone operator, retiring to Clermont,
Florida.
Survivors include three children, Allen of Virginia Beach, Virginia,
Linda Palmer of Iowa Falls and Cynthia Burch of Camp Zama, Japan;
10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Youngstrom of Des Moines and Erma Schnathorst of Lake Havasu City,
Arizona.
Preceding her in death was her husband; her parents; and a
sister, Vera Bovee of Marshalltown.

ELDORA—Rylee Christin Wolcott, infant daughter of Rick and Sandra
Wolcott of Eldora, died on Monday, May 5, 2003, at the Blank Children's
Hospital in Des Moines.
Services were held on Thursday, May 8, at the
First Congregational Church in Eldora, with burial in the Eldora
Cemetery. Pastor Corey Larson officiated.
Rylee was born on April 8, 2003 at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, to
Rick and Sandra Wolcott of Eldora. She was transferred to Blank
Hospital shortly after birth.
She is survived by her parents, Rick and Sandra Wolcott; a sister,
Julia Elaine Wolcott of Roland; grandparents, Harrison "Brud" and
Rebecca Wolcott of Eldora and Judy Martin of Eldora;
great-grandparents, Chloris Martin and Carol Heryford, both of
Eldora.
Preceding her in death was her grandfather, Roger Martin;
great-grandmother, Irene Slamal and uncle, Roderick Wolcott.

IOWA FALLS—Delbert Ralph Davis, 84, of Iowa Falls, died
on Tuesday,
May 6, 2003, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington.
Services were
held on Friday, May 9, in the Woodland Cemetery, Iowa Center near Maxwell.
Burial was in the Woodland Cemetery at Iowa Center. Rev. Don Burket
officiated.
Delbert was born on July 30, 1918 in Strand, to Jake and Lulu Sell
Davis. On August 12,1977, he married Mary Carolyn Yokum. He was a
retired farmer.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan Forrest of Cuba, Kentucky
and Darlene Drummond of Fulton, Kentucky; 12 grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.

HAMPTON—Christine Noah, 42, of Hampton, died on Tuesday, May 6, 2003,
at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Monday, May 12, at 10:30 a.m., at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in
Hampton, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Steve Anderson and
Rev. Nate Frazee will officiate. Visitation will be on Sunday, May 11,
from 1-5:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
Christine was born on June 8, 1960 at Clinton, to Ralph and Joyce Steen
Ostrander. She attended school in Dubuque, Dumont and Allison. She
then attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls and received
her nursing degree in 1991. Christine was employed as a nurse by the
Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield. She was involved in the peer
group at the Oak Tree Apartments doing crafts and other activities. She
was a good artist.
She is survived by three sons, Chad Noah and wife, Danielle of
Hampton, Jeremy Noah and wife, Christina of Kanawha and Jesse Noah of
Humboldt; a sister, Cynthia Oelmann and husband, Warren of Austinville; two brothers, Daniel Ostrander and Donald Ostrander,
both of Hampton; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by
her parents; and a brother, James.

Dean Craighton

BRADFORD—Dean D. Craighton, 66, of Bradford, died at his home
on Wednesday, May 7, 2003.
Services will be held on Saturday, May 10, at
10:00 a.m., at the Hampton United Methodist Church, with burial in the
Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Jerry Miller and Rev. Randy Cane will
officiate.
Dean was born on July 13, 1936 in Geneva, to Cecil and Marie Wilkinson Craighton. He graduated from
the Hampton High School and served in the
82nd Airborne from 1955-58, at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. On December 16, 1956, he
married Lillian Mutzel in Nashua. He was employed by the Bradford
Elevator before retiring in 2000.
Dean was a member of the Hampton
Methodist Church and was a Bradford volunteer fireman. He enjoyed
fishing and camping and was an avid Green Bay Packer fan.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian; two daughters, Ann Barnes and
Deb Chaney and husband, Craig, all of Hampton; two sons, Dennis Craighton and wife, Michelle of Marshalltown and David Craighton and
wife, Monica of Dows; four sisters, Iva Mahorie of El Paso, Texas,
Merna Barney of Barstow, California, Donna Bryant of Woodward and Sharon
Ruth of Park City, Montana; five brothers, Keith Craighton of Ackley,
Jack Craighton of Clear Lake, Lyle Craighton of La Grange, Texas,
Don Craighton of Pine Mountain Valley, Georgia and Earl Craighton of
Hubbard; a sister-in-law, Sharon Janssen of Woodward; 17
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by
his parents; step-father, Andrew Janssen; a sister, Lavon Hartkopp;
two step-brothers; four step-sisters; a nephew; a niece; and a
great-nephew.

Hampton Cemetery. Father Jim Miller will officiate.
Dallas was born on August 20, 1920 in Franklin County, to Floyd and Mollie Liekweg Shear. He graduated from
the Hampton High School in 1937 and on
January 14, 1956, he married Betty Maddox in Princeton, Missouri. He farmed
all of his life and was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
He enjoyed gardening and yard work, old cars and visiting with his
friends.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; two daughters, Daphne Anderson
and husband, Dean of Huxley and Dorene Schear of Long Beach, California;
two sons, Dallas Shear Jr. of Ventura and Mike Shear and wife, Patti
of Iowa City; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a
sister, Arlene Barlow of Aurora, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by
his parents; a brother, Earl; a son, Billy; two grandsons, Charlie
and Jeffrey; and a great-grandson.

Tuesday, May 20, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Parkersburg,
with burial in the Berlin cemetery, Jackson Township, Hardin
County, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2-8:00 p.m., on Monday, at
the Linn’s Funeral Homes, Ackley, Iowa Chapel, with a 7:30 p.m.

Beverley Irene McWherter, was born on July 3, 1926 at Nevada, Iowa, the
daughter of Aaron I. And Ruby Ellen (Day) McWherter. She attended
the Dean #7 country school near Hubbard and graduated from the
New Providence High School with the class of 1944.
On January 29, 1945, she was united in marriage to Bernard James Kadolph at
the St. Mary’s Rectory, Eldora, Iowa. They lived in the Owasa, Iowa, community for several years and for the past three years
had lived in the Maple Manor Village Apartments, Aplington and entered
the Maple Manor Village Nursing Home in February 2003.
Beverly was a homemaker and had worked as a Can for twenty years at
the Hardin County Home, rural Eldora, Iowa.
She was active in her church, enjoyed baking, working with crafts
and spending time with her family and friends.
Beverly I. Kadolph is survived by her husband, Bernard J. Kadolph of
Aplington; three sons, James Kadolph and wife, JoAnn of Eldora,
Russell Kadolph and wife, Vicky of Springville and Timothy Kadolph and wife, Renae of Story City; seven grandchildren;
twelve great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; three
sisters, Barbara Smith of Des Moines, Bonita Smuck and husband, Marlyn
of Des Moines and Belva Kinney and husband, Allen of New
Providence; three brothers, Richard McWherter and wife, Barbara
of Springville, Rodney McWherter and wife, Linda of Iowa Falls and Robert McWherter and wife, Jean of Russell; and
sister-in-law, Kathie McWherter of Venice, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents, A. J. and Ruby McWherter;
and one brother, Ronald McWherter.

HAMPTON—Geraldine A. Esslinger, 88, of Hampton, died

18, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

held on Wednesday, May 21, at 1:00 p.m., at the West Fork United Methodist
Church, rural Sheffield, with a private burial in the West Fork
Cemetery. Rev. Julie Poore-Christensen will officiate.
Geraldine was born on April 15, 1915 at Elmore, Minnesota, to Axel and Ada
Mae Milliman Swanson. She graduated from the Sheffield High School and
married Spencer Esslinger at the Little Brown Church at Nashua on
June 24, 1936. She was a homemaker and involved in numerous
activities and organizations.
Her hobbies were traveling, sewing and
playing cards. She took a special interest in her grandchildren's
activities.
She is survived by a son, Joel and wife, Nina of Sheffield; a
grandson, Spencer Esslinger of St. Cloud, Minnesota; a granddaughter,
Sarah Anker and husband, David of Winterset; and a nephew, Delos Anker
and wife, Jean of Des Moines.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband; and two brothers.

HAMPTON—H. David Crom, 83, of Hampton, died on
Sunday, May 18, 2003, at the North
Iowa Hospice in Mason City.
Services will be held on Wednesday, May 21,
at 10:30 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Hampton, with burial
in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Jerry Miller will officiate.
David was born on December 17, 1919, to Lloyd and Alice Froning Crom. He
graduated from the Hampton High School in 1937 and married Helen
Fredericks in Hampton on July 11, 1934. They farmed north of Hampton
and after he retired, remained on the farm.
He was active as a 4-H Leader, a member of the Franklin Fair Board and the Franklin County
REC. David was also a member of the Franklin County Mutual Insurance
Board and the Franklin County Historical Society. He was a member of
the United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities.
He is survived by a son, Dennis and wife, Judy of Sheffield; a
daughter, Susan Miller and husband, Wayne of Medford, Wisconsin; a
brother, Robert of Hackensack, Minnesota; grandchildren, Christopher
and Danielle Crom and Gregory Crom of Mason City, Kelly and Joe
Calaway of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Shannon and Dan Schopp of Elkhorn, Wisconsin
and Melissa Brennan of Medford, Wisconsin; and one great-granddaughter,
Lauren Calaway.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife,
Helen; and son-in-law, Russell Brennan.

Glen Caruth, 77, of Iowa Falls, passed away

Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Military honors will be

Linn’s Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel, with family receiving

C. Glen Caruth, was born on October 10, 1925 at Iowa Falls, Iowa,
the son of Clifford and Ida Arvella (Riley) Caruth. He
attended the Alden, Iowa Community Schools.
On June 1, 1943, at the age of 17, Glen entered the United
States Navy serving as a Radioman Third Class on many LCT
Flotilla Units in the Asiatic/Pacific Campaigns, with a
discharge of March 8, 1946.
On June 1, 1947, Glen was united in marriage to Shirley Mae
Tjarks at the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls.
He was a self-employed general contractor owning and operating
Caruth Excavating of Iowa Falls.
He was a member of the First

Sabrina Vanatter and husband, Tony of Iowa Falls, Ryan Crain and
wife, Ann of Altoona, Brenda Adams and husband, Bryan of
Toledo; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian Thies of Williams
and Beth Vieth and husband, Dennis of Iowa
Falls; and two brothers, Vernon Dale Caruth and wife, Sharon of

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Ida Caruth;

ACKLEY—Simon Snittjer, 87, of Ackley, died on Saturday, May 24, 2003,
at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.
Services were held on Tuesday,
May 27, at the St. John's United Church of Christ in Ackley, with burial
in the Oakwood Cemetery, Ackley. Rev. Michael Dack officiated.
Simon was born on February 28, 1916 in rural Hardin County, to Simon and Vina Nordman Snittjer. He attended
the Robertson Country School. In 1942,
he joined the United States Navy and was a gunner on the battleship
Massachusetts serving in the Pacific Theatre. On June 25, 1944,
Simon married Anna Kuper at the St. John's UCC in Ackley. He and his
wife farmed in the Ackley area and he moved into town in 1981. He
was a member of the Elliott-Keninger Legion Post No. 252 of Ackley.
He is survived by a brother, Donald and wife, Betty of Ruthven; and
several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
and his wife in 1994.

DUMONT—Victor H. Muhlenbruch, 78, of Dumont, died on Saturday, May 24,
2003, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 28, at 10:30 a.m., at the
Dumont Reformed Church, with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Rev. Bob Scholten will officiate.
Victor was born on June 25, 1924 in Hampton, to Herman and Clara Spangenberg Muhlenbruch. He was raised and educated in the Franklin
County area and served in the United States Army during W.W. II. He
married Donna Lee Day on March 14, 1952 in Hampton. He was a
self-employed electrician and later worked at the Co-op Oil Company
in Dumont.
Victor was a member of the Dumont Reformed Church. He
enjoyed his Model A car, woodworking and fishing.
Survivors include three daughters, Debra Wangness and
fiancé, Jim
Lines of Allison, Dee Ann Meyer and husband, Alan of Dumont and
Denise Petersen of Mason City; a son, Doug of Long Beach, California;
five sisters, Leona Menage of Sibley, Irene Day of Dumont, Lucille
Janes of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Gladys Muhlenbruch of Hampton and Arnelda Knipfel of Hampton; six grandchildren;
and two
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded by his parents; his wife; and a
brother.

2003, at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls.
Services will be held on
Thursday, May 29, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in
Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Visitation
will be on Wednesday, May 28, from 2-8:00 p.m. at the Linn's Funeral Home, with
the family receiving friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed

Edna was born on April 6, 1912 at Leigh, Nebraska, to Henry and Etta Mason
Horton. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1931. On May
19, 1934, she married Irving Campbell at the St. John's Episcopal Church
at Marshalltown. She was a bookkeeper for the Irv Campbell Corporation in
Iowa Falls.
Edna was a member of the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church,
Iowa Falls, the St. Matthew's Auxiliary, altar guild and Bishop's
committee.
She is survived by a son, David and wife, Jacqlyn "Lynn" of Iowa
Falls; nine grandchildren, Bruce Campbell and wife, Amy of Norwalk,
Bryan Campbell and wife, Kathy of Paola, California, Angela
Campbell-Mello and husband, Anthony of Iowa Falls, Brett O'Kones of
West Liberty, Kent O'Kones of Lisbon, Matthew and Megan Campbell of
Cedar Rapids, Jerry Mitchell and wife, Kim of Johnston, Joe Mitchell
and wife, Laura of Omaha, Nebraska; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Irv; one
granddaughter; and one sister.

Harley W. Albrecht

WAVERLY—Harley W. Albrecht, 87, of Waverly, died from natural
causes on Sunday, May 25, 2003, at the Shell Rock Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 28, at 10:30 a.m., at
the
St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly, with Pastor Joyce Sandberg
officiating. Burial will be in the Harlington Cemetery, with
military rites conducted by the American Legion Post #176. Memorials may
be directed to the family.
Harley was born on June 4, 1915 in Waverly, the son of Adolph and
Elsie (Mattke) Albrecht. He attended school in Waverly, graduating
from the Waverly High School in 1933. Following school, Harley farmed
with his father and worked as a painter. On May 25, 1941, Harley was
united in marriage to Eileen J. Hennings at the St. Paul's Lutheran
Church in Waverly. In January 1943, he entered the U.S. Army Air
Force during World War II, where he served until being honorably
discharged in December 1945.
After the service, Harley returned home
and in 1946, the family moved onto his parents farm south of
Waverly. In 1990, Harley and Eileen moved to their home in Waverly
but continued to be partners with their son, Dennis, in the farming
business. On July 1, 2000, Harley moved into The Meadows in Shell
Rock. He lived in the assisted living until being transferred to the
Shell Rock Health Care Center on May 6.
Harley was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly and a member of
the American Legion
Post #176, Waverly. He served as the VFW Commander in 1984 and 1985.
He also served on the ASC County Committee for 24 years and sold PAG
Seed Corn for 27 years. Harley enjoyed playing cards, going to
dances, farming and especially spending time with friends and
family.
Survivors include by his daughter, Nanci Schrader and husband, Neal
of Dallas, Texas; two sons, Dennis Albrecht and wife, Marilyn of
Waverly and Gary Albrecht and wife, Carla of Iowa Falls; six
grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eldora Alton of
Waterloo and Lucille Rudebeck of Janesville.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; his wife, Eileen in 1999; and one brother,
Donald Albrecht.

Ronald Jungling

WELLSBURG—Ronald J. Jungling, 58, of Wellsburg, died
on Monday, May
26, 2003, at his home.
Services were held on Thursday, May 29, at
the Wellsburg Reformed Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Pastor
Todd Rempe officiated.
Ronald was born on July 15, 1944 in Aplington, to George and Grace Boelman Jungling. He graduated from
the Aplington High School in 1962
and on August 7, 1964, he married Sharon Muller at the Bethel Reformed
Church in Aplington. In 1964, they moved to Wellsburg where he
became owner and operator of Jungling Service, which he ran for 35
years.
He was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, a 19-year
member of the Wellsburg Fire Department, past school board member
and a member of the Wellsburg Community Betterment Group. His hobby
was fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Wellsburg; three son, Brad Jungling and wife, Jan of Pella, Jay Jungling and wife, Lori of
Altoona and Travis Jungling of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Lauren,
Levi and Daniel Jungling and Klaire Jungling; his mother, Grace
Jungling of Aplington; two brothers, Bill Jungling and wife, Pat and
Larry Jungling and wife, Jan, all of Dumont.
He was preceded in death
by his father.

ELDORA—Harold "Bus" Shephard, 89, of Eldora, died
on Monday, May 26,
2003, at the Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora.
Services were held on Thursday, May 29, at the Eldora United Methodist
Church, with burial in the Eldora City Cemetery. Pastor Anne Lippencott officiated.
Harold was born on October 14, 1913 on a farm south of Iowa Falls, to Guy
and Emma Bowman Shephard. On February 19, 1931, he married Mary
Montgomery in Albert Lea, Minnesota and graduated from the Owasa High
School in 1932. They farmed south of Iowa Falls until moving to
Owasa for a year, then to Iowa Falls before moving to Eldora in
1944. He was employed by the Wood Auto Co. in Eldora from 1949-81.
He
was a member of the Eldora Methodist Church, Methodist Men, Eldora
Kiwanis, Eldora City Council and the Park Board.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; a daughter, Sharon Gaulke and
husband, Richard of Iowa Falls; a son, Raymond and wife, Doreen of
Denton, Texas; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda; a brother,
Raymond in a farm accident; and a sister, Helen Fuller.

on Monday, May 26, 2003, at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames.

James was born on February 5, 1927 at Parkersburg, to Herbert and Tena
Heerts Dix. He graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1944 and
entered the United States Navy. On June 28, 1947, he married Bettie Higgason at the First Baptist Church Parsonage in Iowa Falls. He was
secretary-treasurer of the Hardin County Mutual Insurance Company in
Iowa Falls from 1968-91. He formerly owned the Dix Real Estate and
Insurance Company in New Providence.
He is survived by his wife, Bettie of New Providence; a daughter, Tannette Sollitt and husband, David of Balsam Lake, Wisconsin; a son, Jeff
Dix of New Providence; a brother, Steve Dix of Lake Okoboji; a
sister, Dorothy McMillen of Owatonna, Minnesota; and four
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

MARSHALLTOWN—Martha M. Butts, 84, of Marshalltown, died
on Monday, May
26, 2003, at the Southridge Nursing Center in Marshalltown, where she
had been a resident since July 2000.
Services were held on Friday, May
30, at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home in Marshalltown, with burial in
the
Rose Hill Memorial Cemetery, Marshalltown. Rev. Will Spencer
officiated.
Martha was born on November 4, 1918 in Hardin County, to Henry and Martha Massow Balvanz. She attended school in Hardin County and on November 10,
1960, she married George Butts in Adel. They lived in Adel before
moving to Marshalltown. Martha was employed by the Veteran's Home,
Hollingsworth Manufacturing and several cafes in Marshalltown.
She is survived by two brothers, Albert Balvanz of Marshalltown and
Martin Balvanz of Waverly; and a sister, Laura Giangrande of Port
Richey, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband
in 1982; a brother, Ernest; and three sisters, Ella Christensen, Alfreda Mathews and Elinor Porter.

on Tuesday, May
27, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Services
will be held on Monday, June 2, at 10:00 a.m., at the Bethel Baptist Church
in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Alcock Cemetery, Frederika. Rev.
Steve Hill will officiate. There will be a one hour visitation before
the services on Monday. Special services will be provided by the
Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188 of Iowa Falls.
Vernon was born on June 11, 1921, to Harry and Amy Mowatt Losee at
Frederika. He graduated from high school, attended the Open Bible
College and served in the United States Navy as a hospital corpsman.
Vernon was employed as a postal worker before retiring.
He is survived by a son, Timothy of Seattle, Washington; three
grandchildren, Samuel, Julia and Micah; a twin brother, LaVern of
Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and two sisters, Betty Jacobson of Eagle Grove and
Evelyn Eastman of Cedar Falls.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; a brother, Earl; and three sisters, Edith, Lela and Lois.

DOWS—Harold Louis Montandon, 86, of Dows, died on Wednesday, May 28,
2003, at the Veteran's Medical Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Methodist Church, Dows, with burial to follow in the Dows Fairview
Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, June 1, from 2-7:00 p.m., at the Linns Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel. Family will receive friends

family.
Harold was born on February 11, 1917 at Alden, to Leon and Luella Worden Montandon. He attended country school near Alden. On June 28, 1942,
he was united in marriage to Arlene Schroeder at Buffalo, New York.
Walter served with the United States Army from 1942-45 in the
European/African, Northern French and Germany campaigns as a
surgical technician fourth grade. Harold and Arlene farmed east of
Iowa Falls for many years, retiring to Dows in 1968, when he then
managed the Dows Golf Course for 11 years.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene of Dows; two sons, Monty and
wife, Julie of Estherville and Larry and wife, Tish of Omaha, Nebraska;
one daughter, Glory Chapman and husband, Bob of Clarion; seven
grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four sisters.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Earl; and two
sisters, Opal McKinney and Irene Hawthorne.

Gary Sill

APLINGTON—Gary L. Sill, 62, of Aplington, died of cancer
on Wednesday,
May 28, 2003, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Services were
held on Saturday, May 31, at the Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg,
with burial in the Bethel Reformed Cemetery at Aplington. Rev. Neal Ooms
officiated.
Gary was born on April 11, 1941 in Milo, to Keith and Grace Jackson
Sill. He graduated from the Aplington High School in 1959 and on September
14, 1963, he married Phyllis Birley at the Bethel Reformed Church in
Aplington. They lived in the Aplington area most of their lives.
Gary was a member of Carpenter's Union, Local 1835 for 40 years.
They established the Dairy Sweet in Aplington and operated it for
seven years. He did seasonal work at the Aplington Elevator, was a
motor route driver for the Waterloo Carrier and farmed 80 acres of
land north of Aplington until his death.
He was also a reserve
police officer for a time. He was a member of the Aplington Jaycees
and had served on the ambulance crew. His hobbies were playing on
the Aplington Basketball League, working on tractors and coon
hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Aplington; a son, Curtis
and wife, Amy of Kesley; three grandchildren, Morgan, Jared and Kyla
Sill; two sisters, Joan Johnson and husband, Dennis of Waverly and
Elizabeth Palcic and husband, Duane of Aplington.
He was preceded in
death by his parents.

UNION—Rachael Elizabeth Manecke, 18, of Union, died
on Wednesday, May
28, 2003, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in
Marshalltown.
Services were held on Monday, June 2, at the Eldora-New
Providence High School in Eldora, with cremation following. Pastor
Scot Shelburne of the First Baptist Church in Eldora officiated.
Rachael was born on April 19, 1985 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Deborah Manecke and stepfather, Larry Clement. She moved to Marshalltown with
her mother as an infant, where she attended grade school. She spent
her freshman and sophomore years in school at State Center and then
moved to Union where she graduated from Eldora-New Providence in
2003.
Rachael enjoyed art and chorus and had made plans to study art
computer animation at the Art Institute in Minneapolis. She was a
member of the high school tennis and speech teams and enjoyed
reading. She attended the First Baptist Church in Eldora, where she
was active in the youth group and AWANA Varsity.
She is survived by her mother, Deborah; stepfather, Larry Clement;
two sisters at home, Moriah and Sara; step-sisters, Ashley Clement of
Marshalltown and Kassy Clement of Montour; step-brother, Travis
Clement of Montour; maternal grandparents, Eugene and Clara Manecke
of Fosston, Minnesota; paternal grandmother, Karen Clement of
Marshalltown; maternal great-grandmother, Nellie Manecke of Bemidji,
Minnesota; and paternal great-grandmother, Tillie Raney of Rhodes.

Eileen was born on August 27, 1928 at Stillwater, Minnesota, to Harm and
Johanna Brown Vietor. On February 14, 1953, she married Glenn Kienol of
Hampton. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran church in Macon and a
homemaker.
She is survived by her husband; two daughters; two sons; 11
grandchildren; and a sister, Phyllis Anderson of Ackley.
She was

June 3, at the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ in Alden,
with burial in the Alden Cemetery. Rev. Bob Miller officiated.
Gladys was born on November 14, 1925 in Baltimore, Maryland, to Roland and Etta
Albrecht Siegmund. She attended high school in Baltimore and on December
5, 1945, she married Eldon Steen in Baltimore. She was employed by
Drs. Graham, Dunlay, Gude, and Brunkhorst for more than 30 years.
Gladys was a member of the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ in
Alden, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and on the church
board. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Alden
and past president of the VFW Auxiliary in Schleswig.
She is survived by a daughter, Diane Smith and husband, Allen of
Ames; three sons, Charles and wife, Vicki of Alden, Allen and wife,
Becky of Hinton and Dave and wife, Brenda of Garner; 12
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; a
brother, Warren Siegmund and wife, Lois of Hemet, California; and a
sister, Naomi Gracie of Baltimore.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, Eldon; and a brother, Marty Siegmund.

Janet Petersen, age 52, of Ackley, passed away at her home on

2003.

Deacon Dave Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mark's
Cemetery in Iowa Falls.
She was born on July 3, 1950 in Waverly, the daughter of Norman and
Monica (Boston) Page. She attended the Clarksville Elementary School
and graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1968. She was a member
of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Ackley Saddle Club and the
American Quarterhorse Association. Petersen had been employed by
the First Miss and Farmers Coop in Bradford and most recently at
the Gruenberg Oil Company in Ackley.
She is survived by her parents; husband, Wayne Meyer of Ackley;
daughters, Michelle (John) Campbell of Oro Valley, Arizona and Page
Petersen of Fort Dodge; sister, Linda (Dough) Bowman; mother-in-law,
Mrs. Lawrence Meyer of Aplington; two grandchildren; one niece and
nephew; four sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law and their
families.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Steven Page; and father-in-law,
Lawrence Meyer.

David was born on January 4, 1959 in Hampton, to Mavis and Eugene Collins.
He graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1977 and had been
employed as a truck driver for E & V contract Farms at Clarion. He
enjoyed motorcycles, kids and the Special Olympics.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn Schlachter of Iowa Falls; two sons,
Brandon Schlachter and Travis Olson, both of Iowa Falls; two
daughters, Casey Schlachter and Letha Olson, both of Iowa Falls; his
parents, Mavis and Ed Mutschler of Bradford; four brothers, Lynn
Collins of Bradford, Dennis Trimble of Carriere, Mississippi, Kevin
Collins of Hampton and Brian Collins of Austin, Texas; four
sisters, Laurie Dow and Ina Rae Collins, both of Iowa Falls, Tammy

IOWA FALLS—Esther Balvanz, 86, of Hubbard, died on Saturday, May 31,
2003, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Services will be held on
Wednesday, June 4, at 10:30 a.m., at the Boeke Funeral Home in
Hubbard, with burial in the Hubbard Cemetery.
