WELLSBURG—Martha Marie Eekhoff, 90, of Wellsburg, died
on Sunday, June
1, 2003, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 5, at 1:30 p.m., at the First
Christian Reformed Church, rural Wellsburg, with burial in the
church cemetery. Pastors Robert and Charles Uken will officiate.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 4-8:00 p.m., with the family present
from 5-8:00 p.m., at the Doyen Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg and also
from 8-11:00 a.m., on Thursday, at the funeral home.

ELDORA—Gerald Orville Brinkmeyer, 85, of Eldora, formerly of
Hubbard, died on Sunday, June 1, 2003, at the Valley View Nursing Home in
Eldora.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, June 6, at 10:30 a.m.,
at the First Congregational UCC Church in Eldora. His cremains will
be scattered on the family farm. The family will receive friends at
the Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard, on Thursday, June 5, from 6-8:00 p.m.

Irene Held

GENEVA—Irene Velma Held, 90, of Geneva, died on
Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at her
home.
Services were held on Monday, June 9, at the United Methodist
Church in Geneva, with burial in the Lindenwood Cemetery, Geneva.
Irene was born on October 1, 1912 in Butler County, to Sebo and Anna
Clawson Kramer. She graduated from the Geneva High School in 1930 and
received her AA Degree from Iowa State College, her B.A. Degree from
the University of Northern Iowa in 1955, and her M.A. Degree from
the University of Northern Iowa in 1959. She started teaching in a
one room school in the Latimer-Coulter area and spent the last 33
years of her 44-year elementary teaching career at Iowa Falls. On
July 14, 1973, she married Roy Held at the Geneva United Methodist
Church. Her interests were her church, education, family and
friends.
Irene is survived by her four stepchildren, Marvin Held and wife,
Jennie Lou, Garnett Held and wife, Mary, all of Tucson, Arizona, Byron
Held and wife, Betty of Charles City and Curtis Held of Houlton,
Wisconsin; two stepdaughters, Virginia Taylor of Rockford, Illinois and
Dorothy Jarrel and husband, Ed of Glendale, Arizona; one sister, Anne
Held of Geneva; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband; a sister, Louise Warneke; and three
brothers-in-law, Walter and Elmer Held and Louis Warneke.

Pamela Wilkinson

HAMPTON—Pamela Mae Wilkinson, 55, of Hampton, died on Friday, June 6,
2003, at her home.
Services were held on Monday, June 9, at the Hampton
United Methodist Church, with private inurnment later in the Hampton
Cemetery. Rev. Jerry Miller officiated.
Pamela was born on September 3, 1947 in Hampton, to Eugene and Tillie Branan Eitel. She graduated from
the Hampton High School and attended
beauty school for a year at Mason City. On September 14, 1968, she
married Terry Wilkinson in Hampton. She was a day care provider
until May 2003.
Pamela was a member of the Hampton Methodist Church.
She enjoyed ballgames and playing with her grandchildren and day
care children.
She is survived by her husband, Terry of Hampton; two daughters,
Angie Miller and husband, Robert of Hampton and Amy Wilkinson of
Hampton; her mother, Tillie Gamble of Hampton; two brothers, Jim Eitel and wife, Joyce of Newton and Robert Eitel and wife, Connie of
Lemoore, California; two brothers-in-law, Tom Wilkinson and wife, Jan of
Dows and Boone Wilkinson and wife, Brenda of Cedar Falls; a
sister-in-law, Becky Chaney and husband, Dennis of Spooner, Wisconsin;
and
five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father;
stepfather; grandmother and grandfather.
The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, was in charge of

Vera Bettenga

APLINGTON—Vera R. Bettenga, 89, of Aplington, died on Friday, June 6,
2003, at the Maple Manor Village, Aplington.
Private graveside services
were held in the Oak Wood Cemetery, Ackley.
Vera was born on December 20, 1913 near Holland, to William and Bertha
Brower Bettenga. She received her education in the Grundy County
public schools. She had worked as a preschool teacher for several
years in Grundy Center and then was employed by Rath Packing in
Waterloo for 17 years, until her rheumatoid arthritis forced her to
resign. She was especially loved by the youngsters whom she was
involved with over the years. She spent the past 20 years at the
Maple Manor Village in Aplington.
She is survived by a sister, Cora Albright and husband of Hampton;
and
two daughters-in-law, Grace Bettenga of Wellsburg and Cleo Bettenga
of Monroe, Washington.
She was preceded in death by all other family
members.
The Linn's Funeral Homes Ackley Chapel, was in charge of
the arrangements.

John "Tim" Hummer

ALDEN—John W. "Tim" Hummer, 63, of Alden, died
on Sunday, June 8,
2003, at his home under the care of his family and the North Iowa
Hospice.
Following cremation, memorial services will be held at
the St.
Paul's Lutheran Church in Alden, on Wednesday, June 11, at 10:30 a.m.,
with interment following in the Alden Cemetery. Rev. Jay Jaeger will
officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to
the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alden.
John was born on March 12, 1940 in Iowa Falls, to George and Madeline
(Molly) Cox Hummer. He was raised and educated in the area of his
birth and graduated from the Iowa Falls High School. On April 5, 1964,
he married Lorraine Lochmann in Alden. They moved to the Quad Cities
area for a time and moved back to Alden in 1974. He was a
self-employed carpenter who enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending
time on his farm.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Alden; a son, Todd Hummer
and wife, Brenda of Owasa; a daughter, Amy Godnai and husband, Shawn
of Altoona; one sister, Mary Phelan and husband, Patrick of Grand
Island, Nebraska; a brother, George Hummer of Westminster, Colorado; and
two grandchildren, Cody and Ashley.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, George and Madeline "Molly" Hummer.
The Pursel-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory of Marshalltown, was in
charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Clingerman

HUBBARD—Dorothy M. Clingerman, 92, of the Hubbard Care Center,
formerly of Eldora, died on Monday, June 9, 2003, at the Mary Greeley
Medical Center in Ames.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday,
June 11, at 10:30 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in
Eldora, with burial in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls at 1:30 p.m.
Pastor John Attaway of the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard
will officiate.
Dorothy was born on November 27, 1910 at Spirit Lake, to Peter and Maude
Edmunds Williams. She attended grade school at Burdette and then
moved to the Iowa Falls area and attended the Ellis Country School and
graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1928. She earned a teaching
degree from Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls. On May 25, 1935, she
married Edward "Guy" Clingerman at her parent's farm. They lived in
Iowa Falls until moving to Eldora in the 1940s. She taught in the Spring
Grove Country School near Iowa Falls and then the Fisher Country School
near Hubbard. After her husband's death in 1965 she moved into
Eldora and worked at Meaders Variety Store, Grahams Department Store
and at the Eldora Hospital as a dietary assistant.
She was a former
member of the Ellis Church and recent member of the Eldora Methodist
Church, the Women's Fellowship and worked at many church
functions. Her hobbies were crossword puzzles, music, playing the
piano, flowers and watching birds.
She is survived by two daughters, Carol Ann Swenson of Ashton and
Julia Jean Klemme and husband, Arvin of Hubbard; a granddaughter,
Jean Ann Baker and husband, David and their children, Benjamin and
Daniel; granddaughter, Kris Swenson of Marshall, Minnesota and son, AJ;
grandson, Monte Swenson and son, Macoy of Slayton, Minnesota.
She was
preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Robert Roegner

PLYMOUTH—Robert Charles Roegner, 84, of Plymouth, formerly of
Geneva, died on Monday, June 9, 2003, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center
at Mason City.
Services were held on Thursday, June 12, at the St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Ackley, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.
Father Jim Miller officiated.
Robert was born on April 21, 1919 at Faulkner, to Charles and Emma
Peters Roegner. He was raised in Geneva and graduated from the Geneva
High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II
and on June 17, 1949, he married Patricia O'Loughlin in Geneva. He
worked as parts man for John Deere at McNames Patterson in Geneva.
Bob was a former member of the St. Paul's Catholic Church at Geneva. His
hobbies were hunting, trapping, morel mushroom hunting and playing
cards.
He is survived by a son, Michael and wife, Denise of Plymouth; three
sisters, Leona Woodley and Ruth Hofmeister, both of Ackley and Velma
Warren of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Garrett, Tristian and
Casey Roegner.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife;
two daughters; and two sisters.

Dorothy Vosloh

IOWA FALLS—Dorothy Faye Vosloh, 67, of Iowa Falls, died
on Wednesday,
June 11, 2003, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
Services
will be held on Saturday, June 14, at 1:30 p.m., at the United
Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery, Iowa
Falls. Rev. Don Preston will officiate.
Dorothy was born on November 14, 1935 in Wilsondale, West Virginia, to Boyd and
Shirley Williamson Adkins. She graduated from high school in Wayne,
West Virginia, in 1952. On September 12, 1959, she married Robert Vosloh in
Cleveland, Ohio, and they were married until 1998. She was co-owner
of Agri Pro Enterprises in Iowa Falls. Dorothy was a member of the
First United Methodist Church, PEO, Bible Study, Birthday Club and
Speech Therapy.
She is survived by four children, Lari Rabe and husband, Joe of Iowa
Falls, Paul Vosloh of Canton, Michigan, Grant Vosloh and wife, Mary of
Houston, Texas and Marianne Janes and husband, Jeff of Roland; seven
grandchildren; her mother, Shirley Adkins of Kenova, West Virginia; her
brothers and sisters, Dallas Adkins of Cleveland, Ohio, Thelma
Taylor of Portsmouth, Ohio, Carroll Adkins and Gordon Adkins, both
of Kenova, Judy Hutchins of Margate, Florida, Larry Adkins of
Flatwoods, Kentucky, Irene Robinson of Ashland, Kentucky and Boyd Dyer of
Kenova.
She was preceded in death by her father; two sisters, Mary
Lou Adkins and Jo Ann Adkins; and two brothers, Donald and Boyd
Adkins Jr.

Dena Heikens

WELLSBURG—Dena Heikens, 91, of Wellsburg, died on Wednesday, June 11,
2003, at the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard.
Services were held on
Monday, June 16, at the Wellsburg United Reformed Church, with burial
in the First Christian Church Reformed Cemetery, rural Wellsburg.
Pastor Harold Miller officiated.
Dena was born on June 20, 1911 in Grundy County, to John and Jennie Heronimus Hoodjer. She attended rural country school in Grundy
County. On August 22, 1929, she married Harry Heikens at the Little
Brown Church at Nashua. They lived on a farm southwest of Wellsburg
until 1971 when they retired and moved into Wellsburg. She was a
homemaker and in later years she enjoyed cooking in various
restaurants in the area. She was a member of the United Reformed
Church in Wellsburg. Her hobbies were playing cards and bingo.
She is survived by four sons, Harlan Heikens and wife, Pearl of
Franklin, Virginia, Don Heikens and wife, Norma of Wellsburg, Marvin Heikens and wife, Jean of Hubbard and Jim Heikens and wife, Linda of
Knoxville; a daughter, Bev Hatcher and husband, Terry of Clemons; 12
grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren;
four step great-great-grandchildren; and brother, John Hoodjer and
wife, Gertrude of Wellsburg.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband in 1976; five sisters; and one infant
great-grandchild.

Vernon Winters

Vernon Winters, 73, of Alden, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, June 12,
2003, at the Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa.
Funeral
services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, at the Linn's
Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel. Private burial will be at a later
date. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m., on Friday evening, at the
Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel. Memorials may be directed to
the family.
Vernon Dale Winters, was born on June 4, 1930, one and one half miles
west of Ackley, Iowa in Franklin County, the son of Otto and Jan
"Jennie" (Riebkes) Winters. He attended Franklin County country
schools. He served with the United State Army from 1951 to 1953,
during the Korean conflict. On August 3, 1951, he was united in
marriage to LaVine Darlene Harms at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church,
Wellsburg, Iowa. To this union two girls were born, Verona and
Darla. Vernon worked as a Road Maintainer Operator for first
Franklin County and then Hardin County, Iowa, for over 30 years.
Vernon is survived by his wife, LaVine Winters of Alden;
two daughters, Verona Parr and husband, Larry of Ames and Darla
Winters of Hampton; five grandchildren, Jason Ellingson and
wife, Amanda of Marshalltown, Angie Simonson and husband, Pete
of Ankeny, Ryan Jimenez and fiancée, Tiffany of Iowa Falls and twins, Jennie and Christopher Ellingson of Ames; one
great-grandchild, Brayton Jimenez of Iowa Falls; two sisters,
Dolores Delly and husband, Gordon of Iowa Falls and Mary Ann Colbie and husband, Bernie of Ackley; and one brother, Paul L.
Winters and wife, Bonnie of Weatogue, Connecticut.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Jennie Winters;
and one infant sister.

IOWA FALLS—Mary Winifred Wolf, 90, of Iowa Falls, died
on Thursday,
June 12, 2003, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.
Services were held on Monday, June 16, at the First United Methodist
Church, with burial in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Rev Don Preston
officiated.
Winifred was born on August 3, 1912 in Iowa Falls, to Winthrop and Artie
Hayden Wilson. She married George Wolf in Eldora on October 3, 1933.
Winifred was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist
Church and church circle.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Vroman and husband,
Richard of Iowa Falls and Georgene Simms of Phoenix, Arizona; four
grandchildren, Luann Pearce of Richmond, Virginia, Linda Patrick and
husband, Kevin of Carroll, Julie Freeman and husband, Scott of
Gilbert, Arizona and Jolyn Warford of San Francisco, California; nine
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and two sisters.

Bernice Miller

HUBBARD—Bernice Gwendolyn Miller, 79, of Hubbard, died
on Friday, June
13, 2003, at the Hubbard Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday,
June 16, at the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard, with burial
in the Hubbard Cemetery.
Bernice was born in Charles City, on September 4, 1923, to Robert and
Gladys (Waters) Hume. She attended and graduated from school in
McIntire. In 1946, she married Harvey Miller at the St. John Lutheran
Church in Charles City. Bernice and her husband were partners in
Martin-Miller Home Interiors in Humboldt and then owned and operated
Miller Home Interiors in Hubbard, until their retirement in 1985.
Bernice enjoyed spending time with her family and baking. She was
well known for her ability at baking homemade pies. She became a
resident of the Hubbard Care Center in September 2002.
Bernice is survived by her husband, Harvey of Hubbard; three
children, Nancy Engle of West Des Moines, Joseph Miller and wife,
Linda of Kanawha and Kathleen Krogmeier and husband, John of
Norwalk; two granddaughters, Tammy Miller of Ankeny and Becky Jo
Miller of West Des Moines; two grandsons, Shayne Miller of New
Jersey and Chad Miller of Texas; her
brothers and sisters, Marie and husband, Henry Bird of Princeton,
Minnesota, Margaret Lubbert of Riceville, Robert Hume of Charles City,
Albert Hume of Branson, Missouri, William Hume of Del Rio, Texas, James
Hume of El Paso, Texas, John Hume of Waynesville, Missouri, Lawrence Hume
of O'Fallen, Missouri, Laura (Dottie) Fal of Peculiar, Missouri; and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son,
James; a sister, Doris Fe of Port Orchard, Washington; and an infant
brother, Charles.
The Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard, is in charge of

Lena Rindels

PARKERSBURG—Lena Rindels, 92, died on Friday, June 13, 2003, at the
Allison Health Care Center in Allison.
Services were held on Monday,
June 16, at the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg, with burial
in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg. Rev. George McGuire officiated.
Lena was born on February 22, 1911, on the family farm south of Parkersburg,
to Menno and Fannie Buss Van Hauen. She attended the Beaver Country
School and she married Simon Rindels in 1930. They lived on several
different farms in the area and she worked at the New Hampton
Laundromat and was housekeeper for several families in the area. She
was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg for 22
years. Lena enjoyed traveling, especially visiting Hawaii in 1972.
She is survived by a son, Vern and wife, JoAnn of Nashua; two
daughters, Shirley Goebel and husband, Ed of Colorado Springs, Colorado
and Myrna Taylor of Benton, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Van Hauen of Parkersburg;
and a daughter-in-law, Charlene Rindels of Boliver, Tennessee.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Ray and Wayne Rindels; a
grandson, Greg Rindels; a great-granddaughter, Erin Bailey; a
brother, Menno Van Hauen and a sister, Tillie Kruger.
The Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, was in charge of

Laurena Witte

HAMPTON—Laurena Marie Witte, 92, of Hampton, died on Monday, June 16,
2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
The memorial service
will be on Friday, June 20, at 10:30 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in
Hampton, with inurnment in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Karl Bollhagen
will officiate. There will be no visitation.
Laurnena was born on June 24, 1910 on the family farm at Coulter, to
Henry and Ida Dohrmann Lubkeman. She attended rural Morgan Township
School. On September 6, 1933, she married Wilbert Witte in the Marion
Center Church. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in
Hampton, Ladies Aide Society and the Alter Guild.
She is survived by a daughter, Maxine Jeffrie and husband, Howard of
St. Louis, Missouri; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and
two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband; a son, Marvin; four brothers; and two sisters.

SANTA ROSA, California—An inurnment service for Ruby McCord Kane and
Jerald L. Kane, will be held in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls, on
Monday, June 23, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. Friends and relative are invited
to attend. Both Ruby and Jerald were born and raised in the Iowa
Falls area. Ruby died on April 3, 2003 and Jerald died on April 9, 1991.

MARIETTA, Georgia—Lois Stilson, 85, of Marietta, Georgia, formerly of
Hampton, died on Monday, June 16, 2003, at her daughter's home in
Marietta.
Services were held on Friday, June 20, at the Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home in Hampton, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev.
Marlys Ruth officiated.
Lois was born on May 30, 1918 at Alden, to Edward and Minnie Shaw
Meyer. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School and also from
cosmetology school in Mason City. On October 15, 1938, she married
Donald Stilson at Independence. She owned and operated her own
beauty salon in Hampton and ran Cricket Gift Shops in Hampton.
Lois
was a member of the Congregational Church of Christ at Hampton, the
Hampton Hospital Auxiliary and helped run the hospital gift shop.
She enjoyed doing amateur art and painting.
She is survived by a daughter, Jolaine and husband, David McGuire of
Marietta; a sister, Marlys Wright of Hampton; a granddaughter, Jane
Johnson and husband, Lance of Clarksville, Georgia; a grandson, Michael
McGuire and wife, Karen of Powder Springs, Georgia; and six
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and
her husband.

Helen Crosser

ELDORA—Helen Hauser Crosser, 96, of Eldora, died
on Tuesday, June 17, 2003,
at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Services were held on
Monday, June 23, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ
in Eldora, with burial in the Hauser Cemetery in rural Whitten.
Memorials may be directed to the First Congregational United Church
of Christ in Eldora.
Helen was born on July 23, 1906 in rural Union, to George and Rosa Rodwell Hauser. She was raised on the family farm, graduated from
the Union High School in 1924, and studied home economics at Iowa State
University. On January 1, 1929, she married Lewis Crosser at the family
farm in Union. Helen was a homemaker and enjoyed photography and
playing golf.
She was a member of the Congregational United Church
of Christ, Order of the Eastern Star and PEO. Helen was the last
surviving grandchild of Thomas and Nancy Hauser, who were the
original settlers in the area.
She is survived by her daughter, Joylyn Marks of Albuquerque,
New Mexico; a son, Jerry Crosser and wife, Janice of Green Valley, Arizona;
six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers;
and four sisters.

Lewis Clark

COLO—Lewis James Thomas Clark, 13 of Colo, died of Ewings Sarcoma on
Thursday, June 19, 2003, at his home.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday,
June 24, at the United Methodist Church of Colo, with burial in the Colo Cemetery. Pastor Lee Williamson
officiated. A memorial fund has
been established.
Lewis was born on October 15, 1989 in Iowa Falls, to Robert A. and
Lori J. (Jones) Clark. He completed the seventh grade at the Colo-Nesco
School. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, baseball and basketball and the
outdoors.
Lewis is survived by his parents, Robert and Lori Clark of Colo; a
brother, Adam Anderson of Hubbard; three sisters, Corina O'Berry of
Des Moines, Betsy Anderson of Colo and Emma Clark of Colo;
grandparents, James and Karolyn Jones of Iowa Falls and Nita Clark
of Loveland, Colorado; great-grandparents, Herbie Lake of Hubbard
and Lewis Clark of Melrose; three nephews; four nieces; and many
aunts and uncles.
Lewis was preceded in death by his
great-grandparents, Emery Lake, Emma Clark, Deo and Bernitta Jones,
and Earl and Edith Whitney.
The Chet Ryan Mortuary of Nevada, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Kenneth Cordes
December 8, 1935-June 21, 2003

WELLSBURG—Kenneth R. Cordes, 67, of Wellsburg, died
on Saturday, June 21, 2003,
while under the care of the Cedar Valley Hospice.
Services were held on
Tuesday, June 24, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora, with burial
in the Shiloh Cemetery. Pastor Bruce Zimmerman officiated. Full military
honors were provided by the Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 92 and American
Legion Post No. 213.
Kenneth was born on December 8, 1935 in rural Dike, to John and Riekstena
Lupkes Cordes. He graduated from the Dike High School in 1953 and
attended the University of Northern Iowa for one year. He
volunteered for the U.S. Army for two years and on September 20, 1957,
he married Glenda Krull in Parkersburg. They lived in Wellsburg
before moving to Marshalltown for five years, when he returned to
Wellsburg he opened the Cordes Hardware Store which he ran for 35
years. He retired in January 2002.
He was a member of the St. Johns'
Lutheran Church in Wellsburg, serving as chairman of the board for
many years, a past president of the Marshalltown Jaycees and member
of the AMVETS Post No. 91 of Wellsburg. Kenneth was an avid Hawkeye
fan and enjoyed golf.
He is survived by his wife, Glenda; a daughter, Jodie Gehrke and her
husband, Steve of Eldora; three sons, Randy and wife, Nancy of
Wellsburg, Robert and wife, Kathy of Carroll and Andrew and wife, Dedra of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Vern Cordes and wife, Mary of Dike;
eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in
death by his parents.
The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg, was in charge of

Carroll Madden

FALLS—Carroll L. Madden, 92, of Iowa Falls, died on Saturday, June
21, 2003, at the Scenic Manor Nursing home in Iowa Falls.
Services will
be held on Thursday, June 26, at 2:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist
Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Rev.
Don Preston will officiate. Military rites will be provided by
the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188, Iowa Falls. Visitation
will be on Wednesday, at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, from 7-8:00
p.m., with the family present at this time.
Carroll was born on October 31, 1910 in rural Hardin County, to Jessie Mae Meader and Lewis Madden. He served in the United States Navy and on
March 24, 1934, he married Dorothy Ellison at Webster City. Carroll
worked as a farm hand and a truck driver and was a member of the
United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls; Hyman Peavey American Legion
Post No. 188 and the Woodman Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Jessie Birchard and
husband, Everett of Lake City, Florida; a son-in-law, Bill Godsell of
Iowa Falls; a brother, Merle Madden of Appleton, Wisconsin; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Madden of Clear Lake, Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Geraldine
Godsell; an infant son; a brother, Lewis and a sister, Gwnevier.
The Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls, is in charge of
the arrangements.

June Deviney

ZEARING—Mildred June Deviney, 80, died on Monday, June 23, 2003, at
the Westbrook Acres at Gladbrook.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday,
June 26, at 10:00 a.m., at the St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Zearing, with
burial in the Hubbard Cemetery. Father Jon Seda will officiate.
June was born on February 24, 1923, to Harvey and Celia McCreary Wolfe at
Dike. In 1933, she moved with her parents to Grant Township, Hardin
County. She graduated from the Zearing High School in 1940. On September 18,
1943, June married Vernon Deviney of Waukon. June and Vern owned and
operated June's Restaurant in Hubbard for six years. She also helped
with the lawn care business and helped her husband with his clock
repair business.
She is survived by her husband, Vernon; three children, Cherry Weig
and husband, Jerry of Marshalltown, Robert Deviney and wife, Tammy of
Des Moines and Katie Grimes and husband, Bud of Gladbrook; five
grandchildren, Chad Kaiser, Jody Weig, Jeffrey Weig, B.J. Deviney
and Matthew Deviney; a step granddaughter, Annie Stocker and her
husband, Greg.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Donald
Wolfe.
The Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard, is in charge of

Mark Lieder

ESTES PARK, Colorado—Mark A. Lieder, 54, died from cancer
on Monday, June
23, 2003, in Estes Park, Colorado.
Memorial services were held on Friday,
June 27, at the Community Church of the Rockies in Estes Park, with
Rev. Mark Evans officiating.
Mark was born on January 13, 1949, to Lyle and Betty Leggett Lieder in
Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from the Spencer High School, receiving a
Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sioux City and a Master's of Divinity and
Doctorate of Ministry from the School of Theology in Claremont,
California. He joined the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist
Church and served churches in New Hartford, Fayette, Parkersburg,
Woodward and Iowa Falls. He retired from professional ministry in
1995 and moved to Estes Park after having been a visitor for 30
years. He worked at the Coldwell Banker Realty and was founding member
of the Estes Park Car Club. Mark was passionate about restoring
automobiles and collecting antiques. He enjoyed hiking, rock
climbing and intellectual and physical challenges.
He is survived by his partner, Pam McCarthy and her daughter,
Natalie Long of Estes Park; a son, Chris Lieder with the U.S. Air
Force in Abilene, Texas; a daughter, Emily Lieder of Minneapolis,
Minnesota; a brother, David Lieder of Stewartville, Minnesota; three
sisters, Becky Smith of Iowa City, Deb Kiesey of Vinton and Rachel
Lieder-Simeon of Eagle River, Alaska; and numerous nieces and
nephews.

Doris Smith

BLAIRSBURG-Doris Ann Smith, 63, of Blairsburg, died
on Wednesday, June
25, 2003, at her home.
Services will be held on Monday, June 30, at
10:30 a.m., at the Foster Funeral Home in Webster City, with burial in
the Alden Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, from 5-8:00 p.m. and
again
prior to the services on Monday, at the funeral home.
Doris was born on June 11, 1940 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Alfred and
Gertrude Kornack. She graduated from the Pius High School in Milwaukee
and on September 22, 1958, she married Lester Christenson at Storm Lake.
He died on September 30, 1959, in an auto accident. On April 2, 1963,
she married Marlin Smith at Caledonia, Minnesota and they made their
home in Blairsburg. Doris worked as secretary and bookkeeper for
the Clearview Cattle Company for nearly 30 years. She was active in the
Iowa Reunion Registry, where she helped adoptees locate their birth
parents and siblings.
She is survived by her husband, Marlin; three sons, Randy
Christenson and wife, Heidi of Auburn, Washington, Keith Smith and wife,
Barbara of Chattary, Washington and John Smith and wife, Darla of Langley
AFB, Virginia; two daughters, Leann Riedeman and husband, Gary of Edmond,
Oklahoma and Cheryl Lascheid and husband, Greg of Alden; 12
grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Kornack of Greenfield, Wisconsin and
John Kornack and wife, Sandy of Franksville, Wisconsin; and several nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her first
husband.

Mina D. Woodley

Mina D. Woodley, 87, of Dumont, died on Friday, June 27, 2003, at
the Grundy
County Memorial Hospital, Grundy Center.
Funeral services were held on
Tuesday, July 1, at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont,
with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Rev. Terra Amundson
officiated.
Mina was born on March 26, 1916 in Dumont, to Rube and Mary Dohlman
Wearda. She graduated from the Dumont Community School and continued on
to the Iowa Teachers College for one year to receive her teaching
certificate. Mina married Claire W. Woodley on December 3, 1936 in Dumont.
She helped her husband on the family farm and was very active in her
church.
She was a member of the Mission Club, UM Women and a Sunday
School teacher. She was a member of the Butler County Republican
Committee, Butler County Hall of Fame, Butler County Cancer Society,
Butler County and Dumont Historical Society, the Farm Bureau and
Cemetery Society. She spent time in daily prayer and Bible study and
enjoyed teaching Sunday School.
Survivors include her sons, Victor and wife, Esther of Allison,
Marvin and wife, Sue of Middleburg, Florida, Allan and wife, Carol of
Parkersburg; a daughter, Ruby and husband, Ronnie Clemens of Vinton;
a sister; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Lois Green

Lois Arlene Green, 75, of Eldora, died on Sunday, June 29, 2003, at
the
Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora.
Funeral services will
take place at the Sietsema Funeral Home, Ackley, on Wednesday, July 2, at
10:00 a.m., with Rev. Jerry Fluth presiding. Burial will be in the West
Friesland Cemetery, Ackley.
Lois was born on October 18, 1927 in Ackley, to Floyd and Edith Rotgers
Green. She graduated from the Steamboat Rock High School in 1945 and
worked 31 years at the Ellsworth Hospital in Iowa Falls as a nurse's
aide. In 1985, she entered the Valley View Nursing Care Center in
Eldora.
Survivors include two sisters, Norma Ruckman and husband, Claude of
Romeo, Michigan and Karen Kadolph and husband, Ron of Hubbard; and many
nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents.

Tillie Cassmann

APLINGTON—Tillie Cassmann, 77, of Aplington, died on Sunday, June 29,
2003, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Funeral services were held on
Wednesday, July 2, at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Waterloo, with
Rev. Keith Piller and Rev. Arnold Imbrock officiating. Burial was in
the
Rose Hill Cemetery at Greene. Memorials may be directed to the
family.
Tillie was born on January 1, 1926 near Wellsburg in Grundy County, to
Dick and Florence Folkers Buss. She received her education in a
country school near her home. She worked at Rath Packing Co. in
Waterloo, where she met her husband. Tillie was united in marriage to
Gordon Cassmann on January 1, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in
Nashua. The couple lived in Waterloo, Greene, Parkersburg, Aredale
and Aplington. She had been a homemaker, a farm wife, a waitress and
had worked in the kitchen at Allen Memorial Hospital.
She was an
active member of the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Waterloo. Tillie
had volunteered for the Salvation Army for many years and at the
Senior Nutrition site. She enjoyed her garden, knitting and
crocheting, and traveling.
She is survived by her husband; her stepmother, Kathleen Buss of
Hampton; a sister, Rosella and husband, Marvin Westendorf of
Tripoli; a nephew, Michael Westendorf and wife, Kathy; five
half-sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
The Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Gary Smith

AMES—Gary Robert Smith, 45, of Ames, died on Sunday, June 29, 2003, in
Ames as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 2, at
the St. Cecelia Catholic
Church in Ames, with burial in the Evergreen Memory Gardens in Nevada.
Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Foundation.
Gary was born on July 9, 1957 at Independence, to Harold and Marlene
Miller Smith. On July 7, 1979, he married Suanne Bell in Ames. He
enjoyed spending time with his family. He had worked for Steamway
and Iowa State University.
Survivors include his wife, Suanne of Ames; three brothers, Tim and
wife, Bev of Iowa Falls, James and wife, Sherri of Ankeny, Patrick and
wife, Mary of Pueblo West, Colorado; four sisters, Margaret and husband,
Kevin Hendricks of Mesa, Arizona, Mary and husband, Tod Anderson of
Minneapolis, Minnesota, Colleen Smith of Ames, Kathy Dickerson of Ames;
and 12 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

John W. Jaspers

FORT COLLINS, Colorado—John W. Jaspers, 78, of Fort Collins, Colorado,
formerly of Eldora, died at the Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins,
on Sunday, June 29, 2003.
Following cremation in Colorado, memorial
services will be held on Tuesday, July 8, at 10:00 a.m., at the First
Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora, with Pastor Corey
Larson officiating. Private family burial services will follow in
the
Eldora City Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m.,
on
Monday, June 7, at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.
John was born on July 5, 1924 in Eldora, to Ben and Bessie Briggs
Jaspers. He graduated from the Steamboat Rock High School in 1941, then
attended Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls. He was a W.W. II
veteran serving with the U.S. Army from May of 1946 until April of
1947. On April 12, 1946, he was united in marriage to Golda Johns in
Ackley. They farmed in the Steamboat Rock area, retiring in 1989. He
was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in
Eldora and the Eldora Rotary Club.
Survivors include his wife, Golda; a daughter, Mary Jaspers of Las
Cruces, New Mexico; a son, Neal and wife, Sherry of Fort Collins; a
sister, Lois Primus of Ackley; five grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a
brother, Alvin.

Grace Blythe

WELLSBURG—Grace Blythe, 93, of Wellsburg, died on Monday, June 30, 2003,
at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley of natural causes.
Funeral
services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, July 3, at the First
Christian Reformed Church in rural Wellsburg, with burial in the
Wellsburg Cemetery. Pastor Tim Diehl will officiate. Visitation will
be on Wednesday, July 2, from 4-8:00 p.m., with family present from 6-8:00 p.m. A
memorial fund has been established.
Grace was born on January 25, 1910 in rural Grundy County, to John H. and
Anna (Eekhoff) Ruter. She attended the Pine Creek Country School in
rural Grundy County and on September 5, 1929, was united in marriage to
George S. Blythe at the Parsonage of the First Christian Reformed
Church. The couple lived on a farm together until George's death on
January 21, 1977. Grace continued to live on the farm until 1980, when
she moved to the Friendship Manor Apartments in Wellsburg.
She was a
lifelong member of the First Christian Reformed Church and had been a
member of Timothy Sisters and the Queen Esther Circle. She had also
been a member of the Shiloh Homemakers and enjoyed playing cards.
Grace is survived by two sons, Ernest and his wife, Berniece of
Grundy Center and Wayne and wife, Joyce of Wellsburg; two
daughters, Mary Ann and her husband, Dale Vry of Parkersburg and Ila Mae Venenga of Bristow; three daughters-in-law, Esther and Donna
of Wellsburg and Ann of Ormond Beach California; 21 grandchildren; 36
great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; three
sons, Gene, Kenneth and Alvin; three grandsons; one
great-granddaughter; and one sister, Adele Knock.
