Terry "Tex" Below
May 20, 1947-January 15, 2009

January 21, 2009

HUBBARD-Terry "Tex" Below, 61, of Hubbard, died on Thursday, January 15, 2009, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 19, at the Faith Evangelical Church in Radcliffe, with the Rev. Earl Korhonen officiating. Burial was in the Hubbard Cemetery in Hubbard. The Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard was in charge of the arrangements.

Terry "Tex" Below, was born on May 20, 1947 in Eldora, to Walde and Joy (Simkins) Below. He was the eldest of four children. Tex graduated from the Hubbard High School in 1965 and went on to study at AIB in Des Moines. He worked at Prairie Land Coop for 30 years until he retired at the age of 55. He was a volunteer for the Hubbard Fire Department for several years.

On May 15, 1976, Tex was united in marriage to Carolyn (Norman). Their family grew as they brought two children into the world, Lance and Laura. After accepting Christ as his personal Savior, Tex publicly displayed his obedience to the Lord by being baptized in 1989. One of Tex’s goals last year was to read his Bible cover to cover. On December 29 he reached that goal.

Over the past eight years, Tex rejoiced as each of his six grandchildren was born. He loved reading to his grandchildren, giving them rides on his motorized cart and laughing with them. It would be hard to find a recent picture of Tex without a grandchild on his lap. It was Tex’s heartfelt prayer that each of his grandchildren put their trust and faith in Jesus. God began to answer that prayer as Tex was able to pray with Sybil as she accepted Christ.

During his last weeks, Tex was scheduled for a foot amputation. Psalm 34 brought him great comfort. Psalm 34:4: “I sought the Lord, and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.” On January 8, Tex experienced a major heart attack and was given hours to live, but the Lord had other plans. Psalm 34:7: “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him and rescues them.”

Tex’s love for his wife and family was clearly evident as they shared the precious week he was given after his heart attack. Before being taken into his final surgery, he told his wife, “I love you, and if I don’t see you again, I’ll see you in heaven.” Tex’s family will deeply miss him, but they take both joy and comfort knowing he is in heaven with his Lord and Savior. Psalm 34:2: “My soul shall make its boast in the Lord, the humble shall hear it and rejoice.”

Tex is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Hubbard; son, Lance and wife, Jessica Below of Hubbard; daughter, Laura and husband, Bryan Dewhurst of Ames; six grandchildren, Sybil, Clara, Jade and Jaegar Below and Madeline and Maximus Dewhurst; his mother, Joy Below of Hubbard; sisters, Trudy and husband, Dennis Winter, DVM and Tresa and husband, Eugene Zoske; and brother, Tracy Below, all of Hubbard; mother-in-law, Wilma Norman of Hubbard; brother-in-law, Wayne and wife, Ellen; sisters-in-law, Charlotte and husband, Roger Dreessen and Linda and husband, Ray Rozevink; along with many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his dad, Walde; and father-in-law, Harold Norman.

Terry Lee Below - To know him was to love him.
