Joe Schipper

PARKERSBURG-Joe M. Schipper, 69, of Parkersburg, died
on Saturday,
February 1, 2003, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.
Services
were held on Wednesday, February 5, at the First Presbyterian Church, with
burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington. Rev. Harlan DeJong officiated. Military rites were provided by
the Aplington Amvets
and the Parkersburg Legion Post.
Joe was
born on November 16, 1933, to Conrad and Reka Marks Schipper near Kesley.
He graduated from the Aplington High School in 1952 and served in the
United States Army from 1953-55 in Georgia. On June 15, 1956, he
married Esther Groeneveld at Aplington. He worked for a short time
at the Kesley Elevator and started farming in 1957. He quit farming
after 45 years and then worked for Lester Mennen and Gary Sherburne
trucking and custom combining.
He was a member of the Aplington Amvets
and Parkersburg Legion, where he held several offices and did
volunteer work for the organizations. He enjoyed fishing, playing
cards and gospel singing.
He is
survived by his wife, Esther of Parkersburg; a son, Curtis and
wife, Marla of Ackley; four daughters, Karla Arends and husband,
Roger, Kathy Jansen and husband, Kenny, twins, Karen Luhring and
husband, Mark and Kristin Johnson and husband, Mike, all of
Parkersburg; 12 grandchildren; six brothers, George and wife, Lois of
Aplington, Alvin and wife, Frances and Robert and wife, Eunice, all
of Kesley, Larry and wife, Sandy of Austinville, Ronnie of New
Hartford and Vernon and wife, Mattie of Corpus Christi, Texas; a
sister, Sharon Schneiderman and husband, Doyle of Parkersburg; and
two sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two
brothers; and three sisters.
The
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home of Parkersburg, was in charge of

James White

DOWS-James C. "Jim" White Sr., 82, of Dows, died
on Sunday, February 2, 2003, at
the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Memorial services were
held on Wednesday, February 5, at the Dows Presbyterian Church, with
inurnment in the Fairview Cemetery, Dows. Rev. Tom Hershey officiated.
Jim was
born on February 13, 1920 at Yonkers, New York, to Thomas and Agnes Nevins
White. He moved to Chicago at a young age and graduated from Tilden
Tech and attended the University of Chicago for two years. On June
4, 1944, he married Jean Drout in Chicago. They lived in Illinois
for six years and then moved to Dows in 1952. Jim worked at various
jobs in Dows and his last job was with the Riverside Book and Bible
Company in Iowa Falls.
He was active in the Presbyterian Church in
Dows, the Lion's Club, the Gideon's, the Dows Historical Society and
was a scout leader. Jim received the Iowa Hall of Fame Volunteer
Award in 1991 and the Iowa Tourism Award in 1999. He was an avid
reader and enjoyed traveling in their trailer with his wife.
He is
survived his wife, Jean of Dows; a daughter, Pat Drury and husband,
Bob of Henderson, Kentucky; two sons, Jim and wife, Janet of Ankeny and Ric and wife, Cinda of San Marcos, Texas; four grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; and a brother, Thomas and wife, Joyce of Ringoes, New Jersey.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bernice Kosanke Shirk

STORY
CITY-Bernice Myrtle Kosanke Shirk, 88, of Story City, died of
Parkinson's disease on Monday, February 3, 2003, at the Bethany Manor in Story
City.
Services were held on Friday, February 7, at the Bethany Manor Chapel
with burial in the Sherman Cemetery, rural Radcliffe.
Bernice
was born near Iowa Falls, to Henry and Mabel Meyer Hansen. She
graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1933 and attended Ellsworth
Community College. On February 9, 1938, she married Vern Kosanke and he
died in 1974. In August 1983, she married F. Morris Shirk who died
in 1989. She lived near Buckeye until 1983, then to Michigan until
1989, and to Story City in 1997. She was a homemaker and retired in
1989 from the Baptist Church Planters Mission.
She was a member of
the Campus Baptist Church in Ames and the church woman's circle. She
was past president of the Hardin County Women's Farm Bureau and a
former Sunday School teacher. Bernice enjoyed traveling, gardening,
painting and mission work.
She is
survived by a daughter, Marlys Moore and husband, Edward of Ames;
two sons, Marlyn Kosanke and wife, Ardeth of Chula Vista, California and
M. Leland Kosanke of Grundy Center; three stepdaughters, Sonya Peace
and husband, Ray, Carmen Aguilar and husband, Polin and Joy Shirk,
all of Michigan; two stepsons, Dave Shirk of Texas and Dan Shirk of
Louisiana; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; two husbands; a granddaughter, Angela Kosanke;
a stepdaughter, Miriam Shirk; and two brothers, Oliver and Earl
Hansen.
The

Lucille Miller

WEBSTER
CITY-Lucille Miller, 86, of Webster City, died on Monday, February 3,
2003, at the Hamilton Hospital in Webster City.
Services were held on
Saturday, February 8, at the Faith United Methodist Church at Webster City,
with burial in the Fairview Cemetery, Dows. Rev. Brian Carter
officiated.
Lucille
was born on March 21, 1916 on a farm north of Dows, to Rudolph and
Beulah Steiff Rollene. She graduated from the Dows High School in 1934
and on February 20, 1944, she married Bruce Miller at the Morgan
Methodist Church east of Dows. The couple farmed in the
Dows-Goldfield area and moved to Webster City in 1972, where she
worked for Frigidaire for 15 years.
Lucille retired in 1985 and
enjoyed traveling on bus trips with her sister. She was a member of
the Faith United Methodist Church, the Webster City Senior Citizen Club
and a retired member of the United Auto Workers Local No. 442.
She is
survived by two sons, Daniel Miller and wife, Patricia of Raeford,
North Carolina and Michael Miller and wife, Donna of Webster City; three
grandchildren; two sisters, Fern Gorder of Dows and Dorothy Dow and
husband, Robert of Oskaloosa; and two sisters-in-law, Patricia Rollene of Dows and Ruth Rollene of Idaho Falls, Idaho.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Milo, Dale and Verl Rollene; two brothers-in-law, Raymond Gorder and Glen Miller;
and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Rollene.

Eva Heilskov

HAMPTON-Eva Antonette Heilskov, 95, of Hampton, died
on Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at the
Hampton Hospital Nursing Facility.
Services were held on Friday, February
7, at the St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Hampton, with inurnment in
the church cemetery.
Eva was
born on November 22, 1907 in Cedar Rapids, to Sena Jensen and Anton
Simonsen. She graduated from the Albert Lea High School in Minnesota and
on February 22, 1934, she married Paul Heilskov Sr. at her parents' home
in Minnesota. They farmed northeast of Hampton. Her parents
immigrated from Denmark and Eva spoke fluent Danish. She played the
mouth organ and the last two years gave each of her
great-grandchildren one to play.
She was a longtime member of the St.
John's Lutheran Church and the KYN Club. She enjoyed cooking,
sewing, knitting and crocheting.
She is
survived by two daughters, Sena Ahrens and husband, Robert of
Hollandale, Wisconsin and Agnes Allinson and husband, Chuck of Hampton; a
son, Kenneth Heilskov and wife, Pam of Ankeny; two daughters-in-law,
Jane Heilskov of Mason City and Clair Iverson of Waverly; 13
grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband in 1972; one son, Paul Jr.; two
brothers; and three sisters.
The

Matt Roberts

CHATTAROY, Washington-Matt L. Roberts, 96, of Chattaroy, Washington,
formerly of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday, February 4, 2003, in Chattaroy.
Graveside services were held on Friday, February 7, at
the Spokane Memorial
Gardens in Spokane Washington, with military honors by the DAV Chapter
No. 45 and the U.S. Naval Honor Guard.
Matt was born on July 24, 1906, to Fred E. and Minnie Tulp Roberts in
Iowa Falls. He graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1925 and
helped on the family farm for eight years. He spent two years in the
United States Navy during World War II and opened a cabinet shop and
contracting business. Matt married Maxine Pringle from Iowa Falls,
and later bought into a boat building company.
He was a lifetime
member of the VFW, a former member of Valley Elks and the Iowa Falls
Elks. He was instrumental in getting the National Guard unit to
locate in Iowa Falls.
He is survived by a brother, Don and wife, Louise of Iowa Falls;
three nieces, including Kay Helvig and husband, Keith of Iowa Falls;
four nephews, including Tom Roberts and wife, Sheryl of Iowa Falls
and Donald L. Roberts and wife, Barb of Ackley; a daughter, Janet Berges of Macungie, Pennsylvania; a son-in-law, Marvin Dietzel; two
granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Ida Tordoff
of Iowa Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his second
wife, Maxine; a son, Jerry; a daughter, Linda; two brothers, Russell
and Cecil Roberts; and a nephew, Gary Roberts.

FALLS-Donald P. Crosser, 73, of Iowa Falls, died on Wednesday, February 5,
2003, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Services will be held on
Saturday, February 8, at 10:30 a.m., at the First Congregational United
Church of Christ in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Northlawn Memory
Gardens, Iowa Falls. Rev. Margaret Debner will officiate. Memorials

Donald
was born on January 6, 1930 at Union, to Kenneth and Mildred Farrill
Crosser. He attended the Roughwood Sleepy Hollow Country School and the
Iowa Falls Community Schools. On February 4, 1951, he married Velma Lois Holbrock at the First Congregational Church in Iowa Falls. Donald
served in the United States Army for two years as a medic aidman
during the Korean Conflict. He farmed southeast of Iowa Falls for 14
years and then worked for the Campbell Supply Co. in Iowa Falls until
retirement.
He was a member of the First Congregational United
Church of Christ and the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188
in Iowa Falls.
He is
survived by his wife, Velma Lois of Iowa Falls; three sons, Harold
Crosser and wife, Donna of Iowa Falls, Wendell Crosser of Des Moines
and Kenneth Crosser and wife, Amber of Ottumwa; 11 grandchildren
including Ashley Crosser of Iowa Falls; a brother, Gary Crosser and
wife, Karen of Iowa Falls; two sisters, Bonnie Minteer and husband,
Lyle of Union and Geraldine Schultz and husband, Vic of Nevada; and
several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

George Smith

WATERLOO-George Gordon Smith, 92, of Waterloo, formerly of Kesley,
died on Wednesday, February 5, 2003, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in
Waterloo.
Services were held on Saturday, February 8, at the Redman-Schwartz
Funeral Chapel in Aplington, with burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery,
Aplington.
George
was born on February 17, 1910 at Aplington, to George E. and Minnie DeBuhr
Smith. He attended country school near Austinville. He farmed
various farms in Butler County for 50 years and retired in the early
70s. George attended the Hitesville Gospel Hall, rural Aplington. He was
a longtime member of the National Rifle Association and had a great
interest in collecting and selling guns and enjoyed hunting and
trapping. He was a motorcycle enthusiast who had ridden since the
age of 20.
He is
survived by two brothers, Theodore Smith Sr. of Clarion and Herb
Smith and wife, Nadine of Waterloo; 11 nephews; and four nieces.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John and an infant
brother; and a nephew, Roger Smith.

Lillian "Elsie" Blair

"Elsie" Blair, 95, of New Providence, Iowa, passed away on Friday,
February 7, 2003, at the Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center,
Eldora, Iowa.
Elsie Blair had donated her body to the University of
Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City, Iowa, for scientific purposes.
Formal services will be held at a later date.

Lillian
Elsie Spears, was born on March 13, 1907, the daughter of William Henry
and Lucy Ann (Blair) Spears. She attended schools in Tampico,
Indiana, Rowan, Iowa and Waterloo, Iowa. On
December 28, 1934, she was united in marriage to Richard Lawrence
Blair at Galena, Illinois. She was a homemaker.
She enjoyed working
on the acreage, gardening and babysitting. Elsie
was a member of the Pleasant Chapel Church, the Honey Creek New
Providence Friends Church and the Pleasant Chapel Cemetery Society.
Lillian
Elsie Blair is survived by one daughter, Kay Smith and husband, W. J.
'Bill' of New Providence; two grandchildren; two
step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her husband, Richard Blair; her parents,
William and Lucy Spears; three brothers, Everett Spears, Roy Spears
and an unnamed infant; one sister, Edith Fisher; her step-mother, Goldia Spears; one step-brother, Harry Miller; and one step-sister, Zetta Shumann.

Wendell Kriegel

WHITTEN-Wendell Dean Kriegel, 47, of Whitten, died on Friday, February 7, 2003, at
his home under the care of his family and the Iowa River Hospice.
Services were held on Monday, February 10, at the Whitten Community Church,
with burial in the Hauser Cemetery, Whitten. Rev. Charles Fry
officiated.
Wendell
was born on February 27, 1955 in Grinnell, to Wilbur and Waneta Hileman
Kriegel. He grew up in the Tama area where he attended school. On
August 31, 1984, he married Lois Jean Catherwood in York, Nebraska. They
moved to Whitten 18 years ago after living briefly in Nebraska and
Alaska. He had last worked at the Mid-Iowa Workshop for three years and
previously worked as a truck driver for Blunt Trucking, New Ross
Trucking and Warren Transport.
He is
survived by his wife, Lois; three daughters, Shannon Kriegel and
husband, Austin Reed of New Providence, Billy Jo Bohonek of Nebraska
and Jennifer Moore of Conrad; three sons, Jason Kriegel of Whitten,
Travis Kriegel and wife, Mary of Eldora and Brian Kriegel and wife,
Shannon of Marshalltown; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Wesley Kriegel of Jamesport, Missouri and Willie Kriegel of State Center; two
sisters, Wilma Brandt and Wanda Pearson and husband, Bill of
Phoenix, Arizona; and mother-in-law, Brenda Catherwood of Conrad.
He
was preceded in death by his parents.

RADCLIFFE-Claude Davis, 83, of Radcliffe, died on Friday, February 7,
2003, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
Services were held on
Monday, February 10, at the St. John's United Methodist Church in Radcliffe,
with burial in the Radcliffe Cemetery. Rev. Dana Williams
officiated.
Claude
was born on August 1, 1919 on a farm at West Union, to George and Fern
Knight Davis. He graduated from the Randalia High School in 1937 and on
November 23, 1939, he married Elva Wykle at Dubuque. They began farming
in the Radcliffe area and farmed until 1979, when they retired and
moved into Radcliffe. He was employed by the Radcliffe School for
approximately 10 years.
He is
survived by his wife, Elva of Radcliffe; two daughters, Marlene
Bailey and husband, Jim of Lockwood, Missouri and Jean Benham and husband,
Doug of Stoughton, Wisconsin; three sons, Larry Davis and wife, Claudia of
Radcliffe, Ken Davis and wife, Janet of Cedar Rapids and Steve Davis
and wife, Marcia of Radcliffe; 11 grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pearl Wienke of Rockford, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Iola Bright; four
brothers, Paul, Aulden, Gerald and Reynold Davis; and two
granddaughters, April and Emily Davis.

ELDORA-Mary M. Drury, 93, of Eldora, died on Monday, February 10, 2003, at
the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
A Mass of Christian Burial
will be held on Wednesday, February 12, at 10:00 a.m., at the St. Mary's Catholic Church
in Eldora, with burial in the church cemetery. Memorials may be
directed to the St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Mary
was born on July 3, 1909 in rural Eldora, to Frederick and Matilda Loebig Dole. She graduated from
the Eldora High School and on June 22,
1932, she married Elmer "Buck" Drury in Grundy Center. They farmed
in the Ivester area until 1957, when they moved west of Eldora where
they farmed until his death in 1983. She worked as a clerk at
the Graham's Department Store in Eldora and at Roger's Produce in
Eldora.
Mary was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church and served
on the social committee. She enjoyed gardening and baby sitting her
grandchildren when they were young.
She is
survived by her son, Dan Drury Sr. and wife, Carol of Eldora; two
grandchildren, Tracey Card and husband, Tim and Dan Drury Jr. of
Eldora; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by
her parents; her husband; three sisters, Caroline Beamsley, Irene
Shafer and Anna Rogers; and two brothers, Joe and Fred Dole.

WILLIAMS-May Bell Knuths, 87, of Williams, formerly of Dows, died
on Thursday, February 13, 2003, at the Wright Medical Center in Clarion.
Services were held on Monday, February 17, at the Willim Funeral Home in
Clarion, with burial in the Galt Cemetery, rural Galt. Pastor Janet Wearda of the United Church of Rowan officiated.
May Bell was born on April 25, 1915 at
Muskogee, Oklahoma, to William and Millie Dunaway Jacobson. She was
raised and educated in Oklahoma until age 16. She then moved to
Britt and lived with an aunt and uncle. On October 6, 1937, she married
Dale Knuths at Northwood. The couple made their home at Dows, where
they farmed until the early 1960s when they bought a farm near Galt. After
the death of her husband in 1973, she continued to live on the farm
until 1992 when she moved into the Dows Care Center. For the past 5½
years she has been a resident of the Doug and Lori Wiseman Home at
Williams. She enjoyed singing and embroidering.
She is
survived two daughters, Alice Retleff and husband, Larry of Rowan and
Carol Madden and husband, Robert of Livingston, Texas; two sons, Alan Knuths of Pocahontas and David Knuths of Hull; 10 grandchildren; 13
great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren, one
great-great-grandchild; a brother, William Jacobson of San Antonio,
Texas; and a sister, Grace, who was adopted as a child.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter-in-law,
Sharon; two grandchildren, Philip Madden and Rex Knuths; four
brothers, Woodrow, Frank, Marshall and Charles Jacobson; and three
sisters, Hazel Worley, Violet McFarland and Pat Chapman.

Selma Swenson

RADCLIFFE-Selma Swenson, 98, of Radcliffe, died on
Friday, February 14, 2003, of
heart failure at the Bethany Lutheran Manor in Story City.
Services were
held on Monday, February 17, at the Bethany Manor Chapel in Story City, with
burial in the Radcliffe Cemetery.
Selma
was born on October 19, 1904 near Radcliffe, to Ed and Mollie Eike
Swenson. She attended rural Radcliffe Schools and was a graduate of
the Iowa Beauty School in Des Moines. She owned and operated her own
beauty shop in Radcliffe for many years. Selma was a homemaker and
resided in Radcliffe most of her life until moving 19 years ago to
Cedar Place in Story City. She had resided at Bethany Manor the past
year. She was a lifelong member of the Salem Lutheran Church near
Radcliffe.
She is
survived by a sister, Bertina Raney of Strawberry Point; and one
sister-in-law, Karen Swenson of Radcliffe; and many nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters,
Senora Blom, Mayme Hodnefield, Elsie Swenson, Irene Swenson and
Evelyn Swenson; and five brothers, Archie, Amos, Elmer, Forrest and
Howard Swenson.

Wayne Simkins

PARKERSBURG-Wayne Leroy Simkins, 78, of Parkersburg, died
on Saturday,
February 15, 2003, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Services will
be held on Wednesday, February 19, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Reformed Church
in Aplington, with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg. Rev.
Harlan DeJong will officiate. Full military rites will be provided
by the Aplington Amvets No. 102.
Wayne
was born on June 22, 1924, on a farm near Douglas, Illinois, to Roy and
Ethel Diefendorf Simkins. He graduated from the Yates High School in
Yates City, Illinois in 1943. On June 26, 1943, he married Betty Ryder
and they farmed until he was drafted to serve in the United States
Army during World War II. After his discharge the couple moved to
Aplington and he farmed until the mid 80s. They divorced in 1983 and
he married Bonny Barton on February 18, 1984 in Reinbeck. They joined
the two families and lived in rural Parkersburg.
He enjoyed the
outdoors, gardening and flowers. Wayne was a member of the First
Reformed Church in Aplington. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing
cards and building birdhouses.
He is
survived by his wife, Bonny; a son, Mark Simkins and wife, Diane of
Cedar Falls; two daughters, Patricia Mote and husband, Bill of Emo,

HOLLAND-Jennie Meyer, 92, of Holland, died on Saturday, February 15, 2003, at
the Grundy Center Memorial Hospital.
Services were held on Tuesday, February
18, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Pastor Todd Rempe officiated.
Jennie
was born on March 24, 1910 in Grundy County, to Carl and Ella Diekman
Nederhoff. She attended country school through eighth grade and on
February 18, 1953, she married Harry Meyer at the Little Brown Church at
Nashua. She was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church.
She is
survived by a daughter, Phyllis Miller and husband, John of Hampton;
three grandchildren, Jim Miller and wife, Anne, Terry Miller and Tim
Miller and wife, Kelli; and three great-grandchildren, Emily, Tony and
Mackenzie.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in
December 2002; two brothers, Albert and Henry Nederhoff; and four
sisters, Tillie Schaeffer, Effie Diekman, Ann Dorsey and her twin
sister, Tena Ziesman.

GENEVA-Dorothy Mae Hofmeister, 83, of Geneva, died on Saturday, February 15,
2003, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.
Services were
held on Tuesday, February 18, at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley, with
burial in the Pleasant Hill Grant Township Cemetery, rural Iowa Falls.
Rev. Jerome Gernander officiated.
Dorothy
was born on April 28, 1919 in Grant Township, to Frederick and Taldine
Stoehr Thies. She attended the North Star rural school in Franklin
County. On May 28, 1947, she married William P. Hofmeister at the St.
John's Reformed Church at Ackley and they farmed in the Geneva area.
She is
survived by three daughters, Sharleen Hubbard and husband, Dave of
Parkersburg, Carolyn Varland and husband, Ken of New Ulm, Minnesota and Marjean Biederman and husband, Phil of Osage; two sons, Darwin and
wife, Rhonda of rural Ackley and Marlyn of rural Geneva; 13
grandchildren; a sister, Esther Haupt of Ackley; and a brother,
Franklin Thies of Iowa Falls.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband; a brother, Fredrick; and two grandchildren.

MOINES-Raymond W. Surls, 72, of Des Moines and formerly of Iowa Falls,
died of pneumonia on Sunday, February 16, 2003, at the Mercy Medical Center.
A
prayer service was held at the Open Bible Church in Iowa Falls, on
Tuesday, February 18, with graveside services later in the Union Cemetery,
Iowa Falls.
Raymond
was born in Iowa Falls on August 8, 1930, to Charles and Bessie Rubendall Surls. He graduated from
the Iowa Falls High School and moved
to Des Moines in the 1960s. He served in the United States Army in
the Korean War and worked in the economy forms construction business
before retiring. He had built a cross for the Trinity Church of the
Deaf in Des Moines.
He is
survived by a daughter, Pamela Pearson of Fullerton, California; two
sons, Steven and Brian Surls, both of Westminster, California; a sister,
Maxine and husband, Albert Bach of Iowa Falls; six grandchildren;
and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; a twin brother, Robert and three other brothers, Charles,
Kenneth and Donald; and one sister, Lucile Blalock.

Allison Care center in Allison.

the Washington Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Ackley. Rev. Robert Scholten will officiate.
Bernice
was born on March 22, 1913 at Dumont, to Harry and Minette Ahrens Card.
She graduated from the Dumont High School and on October 5, 1932, she
married William Bruns in rural Ackley. She was a member of the
Dumont Reformed Church and the church women's group and years ago
she was active in 4-H. Bernice enjoyed baking, quilting and playing
cards.
She is
survived by a son, Edward and wife, Randy Bruns of Kimberling City,
Missouri; four daughters, Betty Wubbena and husband, Jim of Bristow, Minetta Jones and husband, Henry of Cedar Falls, Margorie Freese and
husband, Darwin of Dumont and Dorothy Seaton of LeMars; two
brothers, Chester Card of Dumont and Harry Card and wife, Betty of
Hampton; three sisters, Loraine Manatt, Oneta Stackhouse and Overna
Card, all of Hampton; 42 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and
seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband; a son, Richard; one brother; and three
sisters.

ROCKFORD, Illinois-Betty Ann Trees, 76, of Loves Park, Illinois, a suburb of
Rockford, Illinois, died on Sunday, February 16, 2003, at her home.
Services
were held on Thursday, February 20, in the Fitzgerald and Associates
Funeral Home with burial in Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery, both
in Loves Park. Rev. Marty Caliva officiated.
Betty was born on February 11, 1927 in Alden, to William and Wilhemina
Pommrehn. She married Warren Trees on November 11, 1959, in Colorado
Springs, Colorado. She worked as the secretary and treasurer of Remco Center
with her husband and decorated cakes for Logli's.
She is survived by her husband, Warren of Loves Park; a daughter,
Debbie DeLorme and husband, Steve of Rockford; a son, Jimmy of
Minneapolis; four grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Ostheimer and
husband, Robert of Iowa Falls and Donna Moody of Greeley, Colorado; a
sister-in-law, Norma Pommrehn of Iowa Falls; and many nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers,
Lyle, Laverne, Leland and William Pommrehn.

ROCK, Colorado-Ronald Rex Reed, 62, of Castle Rock, died on Monday, February
17, 2003, in Castle Rock.
Services are pending in Castle Rock.
Ronald
was born on August 28, 1940 in Iowa Falls, to C. Harold and Anna Reed. He
graduated from Iowa Falls in 1958 and spent three years in the
United States Air Force. He graduated from the Denver School of
Electronics and worked for the school after graduation, but for most of
his career he sold insurance. In 1964, he married Patsy King in
Denver, Colorado. They owned two villas in Jamaica that they rented to
tourists.
He enjoyed traveling and was looking forward to coming to
Iowa Falls for his 45th school reunion this summer.
He is
survived by his wife, Patsy; a son, Scott and wife, Stacie of Houston,
Texas; a daughter, Trisha Munholland of Castle Rock, Colorado; five
grandchildren; three brothers, Larry Reed of Eldora, Terry Reed of
Lakeland, Florida and Gary Reed of Las Vegas, Nevada; two sisters, Joyce
Aguilera of Balboa, California and Connie Lyman of Iowa Falls.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; two infant sisters, Shirley and
Patricia; and a brother, James.

Scott
was born on August 5, 1966 at Hampton, to Joe and Marilyn Hartman Hunt.
He graduated from the Hampton High School in 1984 and attended college
in Missouri. On August 5, 1988, he married Pam Walker in Hampton. He
was a truck driver for Heitland Excavation in Hampton and was a
member of the Faith Baptist Church in Hampton. He enjoyed playing cards
and collecting NASCAR Collectibles.
He is
survived by his wife, Pam of Hampton; two sons, Stephen and
Nicholas, both of Hampton; his parents, Marilyn Hunt of Hampton and
Joe Hunt of Hampton; maternal grandmother, Kathryn Hartman of
Hampton; and mother-in-law, Hannah Walker of Hampton.
He was
preceded in death by his paternal grandparents and his maternal
grandfather.

on Friday, February 21, 2003, at the Muse
Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City.
Services were held on Monday, February
24, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hampton, with burial in
the Trinity
Lutheran Cemetery. Rev. Karl Bollhagen officiated.
Arnold
was born on October 13, 1923 at Hampton, to William and Alvina Muhlenbruch
Spangenberg. He graduated from the Hampton High School and on August 28,
1948, he married Marie Ochoa at Mason City. Arnold was a farmer and
a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed dancing at the Surf
Ballroom, drawing cars, studying history and genealogy and farming.
He is
survived by three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Spangenberg and Evelyn
Spangenberg, both of Hampton and Carmen Arispe of Mason City; two
nephews; three nieces; and a daughter-in-law, Teresa Penning of
Clear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a
son, David; and two brothers, Roy and Wilbert Spangenberg.

Cemetery in Boone. Rev. Dean Fullerton will officiate.
Donna
was born on October 30, 1930, to Glenn and Eva Gibbons Blanchard. She
graduated from the Boone High School in 1948 and attended Boone Junior
College. She was married in 1949 to Clarence Peterson and after his
death in 1972, she married Marshall King in Des Moines. She worked
as a secretary for the Jordan Law Firm and Des Moines Area College
before becoming administrative assistant to the dean at DMACC
College.
She was a member of the Methodist Church in Boone,
Order of Eastern Star, ABWA and had been a Girl Scout Leader.
She is
survived by her husband, Marshall of Boone; a daughter, Judy Collison and husband, Dave of Iowa Falls; a son, Kent Peterson and
wife, Mandy of Boone; two stepsons, Randy King and wife, Kathi of
Star, Idaho and Jon King and wife, Peg of Boone; three step-daughters,
Nancy Anania and husband, Tom of Ames, Lori Schultz and husband,
Dennis of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Kathy Erickson and husband,
Dennis of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 17 grandchildren; and one
great-grandson.

in rural Hampton.

at 10:30 a.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with
inurnment in the Hampton Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Jose
was born on September 24, 1934 at Zacateca, Mexico, to Jose and Ignacia
Gomez Guerrero. He was educated in Zacateca and on September 2, 1963, he
married Maria Perez in Rio Bravo, Mexico. He worked for Fred Carlson
Construction before he retired and then worked some for Casa Maria's
Restaurant and did wood working.
He is
survived by his wife, Maria; three daughters, Nasha and husband,
Agustin Nava of Rohnert, California, Martina Guerrero and Maria Siems
and husband, Kevin of Hampton; five sons, Inocencio of Peoria, Illinois,
Amado and wife, Rhonda of Sheffield, Fred of Hampton, Jose Jr. and
wife, Samantha of Hampton and David of Mason City; his father, Jose
Guerrero of Hampton; six brothers; four sisters; and 15
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother; four brothers
and a sister.

Martin Meier

HUBBARD-Martin Marion Meier, 92, of Hubbard, died on Sunday, February 23,
2003, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Memorial services were
held on Tuesday, April 29, at the Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard, with
interment in the Hubbard Cemetery. Pastor Bruce Meier officiated. A
flag folding and presentation was handled by the American Legion Post 4
of Hubbard.
Martin was born on December 1, 1910 near Hubbard, to Louis and Emma Boeke
Meier. He received his education at the rural Evergreen School and the
Hubbard Community School. He worked on the farm with his father
until moving into Hubbard with his parents in 1942. Martin served in
the United States Army and after basic training was sent to serve in
North Africa and Italy. After his discharge in 1945, he continued to
live with his parents and farmed with his brother. He later worked
at the grain elevator. After the death of his parents, he lived in
the Dougan Apartments in Hubbard. In 1994, when his health deteriorated,
he moved to the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls, where he lived until
his death.
He is survived by two brothers, Verlin of Bullhead City, Arizona and
Kenneth and wife, Ginette of Sun City, Arizona; a sister-in-law,
Elaine Meier of Algona; four nieces and four nephews.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Norbert; and a
sister-in-law, Carolyn Meier.

Wilma
was born on October 5, 1907 in Iowa Falls, to Burr and Theresa Grupe
Stewart. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School and took Normal
Training. On November 18, 1925, she married Arthur Lentz and they farmed
south of Iowa Falls. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran
Church in Iowa Falls, a member of the Ladies Aid, Ellsworth Hospital
Guild, and a regular visitor of the Care Center.
She is
survived by a daughter, LaVon Barkmeier and husband, Arlys of
Rockwell City; a son, Stewart and wife, JoAnn of River Falls, Wisconsin;
eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
her husband, Arthur; a son, Verl; and two brothers, Kenneth and
Gordon Stewart.

friends and being with his friends.
He is survived by his parents, James and Elizabeth Jones Thoms; a
sister, Lucy of Alden; a brother, Joe of Alden; maternal
grandparents, Charles and Diana Jones of Northampton, England; and
aunt, Jenny Jones and an uncle, Paul Jones, both of Northampton.
He

Sherryl was born on January 31, 1940 in Ackley, to Ben and Gertrude Mennen Neymeyer. She graduated from
the Ackley High School in 1957 and
Ellsworth College. On October 3, 1958, she married Wendell Eilderts and
they were later divorced. She was a homemaker, a member of the
Ackley American Legion and the Ackley Saddle Club.
She is survived by five daughters, Cinda Link and husband, Terry of
Ackley, Jana Gorder and husband, Bruce of Bradford, Lori Smith and
husband, Dave of Cedar Falls, Danel Eilderts and friend, Kris of St.
Louis, Missouri and Tracy Eilderts and friend, Chuck of Prairie City; a
son, Brent Eilderts and wife, Lori of Front Royal, Virginia; 10
grandchildren; her parents; and two sisters, Marcene Fazio of
Dubuque and Darla Johnson of Rockford, Illinois.

Lutheran Church in Coulter, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev.
Jon Anderson will officiate.
Herluf was born on May 31, 1913 at rural Thornton, to Chris and Mary Bertelsen Ytzen. He attended Coulter Schools and on May 10, 1942,
married Gladys Nielsen in Des Moines. He was a farmer and member of
the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Coulter.
Herluf was a volunteer with
Red Cross and Hospice, enjoyed music, taught Sunday School and
served on many church committees.
He is survived by a daughter, Christine Ytzen of Pleasant Hill; a
son, Gerald Ytzen and wife, Dorothy of Carmel, Indiana; a grandson,
Allen and a granddaughter, Laura, both of Carmel.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Lyle; and a sister,
Frances Christensen.

EDGERTON, Wisconsin-Josephine M. Colby, 89, of Edgerton, formerly of
Ackley, died on Wednesday, February 26, 2003, after a short illness.
Services were held on Friday, February 26, at the Whitcomb-Lynch-Overton
Funeral Home in Janesville, Wisconsin. Graveside services will be held
on
Saturday, March 1, at 2:00 p.m., in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.
Josephine was born on June 1, 1913 in Smith Center, Kansas, to Carlos
and Lulu Fitzgerald Francis Logan. She graduated from the Smith Center
High School and on February 6, 1936, she married Cecil Colby in Kansas.
She and her husband farmed in Hardin County for over 50 years. She
was a former postmaster in Ackley. They moved to Wisconsin in 1995
to be near their daughter. While in Hardin County, she was active in
organizing the Democratic Party. She enjoyed gardening, especially
flowers, traveling and playing cards.
She is survived by two daughters, Lynthia Nelson and husband,
Robert of Tehachapi, California and Mary Schlais and husband, Hal of Edgerton,
Wisconsin; one son, Alan Colby and wife, Karla of Ackley; five
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband in 1997; and a brother, Orval
Francis.

GLADBROOK-Raymond E. Brockman, 85, of Gladbrook, formerly of Beaman, died
on Wednesday, February 26, 2003, at Westbrook Acres Nursing
Home in Gladbrook.

a.m., at the Christ Lutheran Church in Gladbrook, with burial in the Oakland
Cemetery, Beaman. Pastor Bruce Zimmermann will officiate.
Raymond was born on December 27, 1917, to Henry and Louise Hillygus
Brockman in Stanton, Missouri. The family moved to Saskatchewan, when he
was three and he attended school in that area. He served in the
Canadian Army from 1941-46. On November 24, 1948, he married Wanda
Anderson in Canada. They moved to Beaman in 1962 and he worked for
Ritchie Manufacturing until retirement in 1986.
Raymond was a member
of the Christ Lutheran Church in Gladbrook and Central Iowa Good Sam's
Camping Club. He was an active volunteer and a former Beaman Lions
Club member.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda of Beaman; a son, Barry and wife,
Ann of Iowa Falls; a daughter, Beverly Risius and husband, Les of
Marshalltown; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two
brothers, Roman and Victor, both of Saskatchewan.

attended NIACC in Mason City. She never married. Gina was an active
member of TOPS Iowa No. 272.
She is survived by her parents; a sister, Lisa Blunt and husband,
Terry of Carol Stream, Illinois; three nephews, Joel, Andrew and
Jonathan; one niece, Elizabeth; two uncles; and an aunt.
She was
preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents; one
uncle; and two aunts.
