Community Shocked by
Murder/Suicide of Hampton Couple
January 9, 2002
HAMPTON-More questions than answers remain as local law
enforcement authorities try to unravel an apparent murder/suicide
that occurred on Friday, January 4 in Hampton.
The Hampton Police Department was called to 1014 1st St. NW,
about 6:10 p.m., on Friday evening, to respond to a reported domestic
situation.
When officers arrived, they found Gordon "Gordy" Woltjer, 37
and his wife, Angela Devries-Woltjer, 32, in the basement of their
home. Both individuals had suffered gunshot wounds. Franklin County
Medical Examiner Dr. Keith Hansen, pronounced both victims dead at
the scene.
According to the Hampton Police Department, preliminary
findings indicated that Gordy Woltjer shot his wife, and then shot
himself. The department with the aid of the Iowa Division of
Criminal Investigation, conducted numerous interviews and have
confirmed the original findings. An autopsy was performed on January 5,
confirming the medical examiner's findings as gunshot wounds being
the cause of death.
According to Hampton Police Captain James Wobschall, no
previous incidents of domestic abuse or disturbances had been
reported to the Hampton Police. Neighbors reported the Woltjers as a
fine family with no outward appearances of family troubles. Angela
was described as being a very caring mother and babysitter. She had
operated a day care service from her home the past seven years.
Gordy was a truck driver for Smithway Motor Xpress in Fort Dodge. He
was a friendly and helpful person, another neighbor reported.
The Woltjer's lived hear the Hampton High School where both
graduated. They were married in 1991. Wobschall reported that the
couple's three minor children 8-year-old Danyelle, 5-year-old
Miranda and 22-month-old Blyane were all at home at the time of the
shootings. None of them were injured. A trust fund for the three
children has been established at the First National Bank in Hampton.
According to the Hampton Police, no motive is known but the
investigation is continuing and more interviews are pending. In
addition to the DCI, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the
Franklin General Hospital Ambulance assisted at the scene.
