IOWA FALLS-Dorothy Hale, 93, of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday,
January 1, 2008, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 4, at the
Bethany Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the
Friends Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa
Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
Dorothy I. Hale, was born
on May 3, 1914 in Fort Dodge, the daughter of Leon and Mae (Ramsden)
Osmanson. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School and
the Ellsworth Music Conservatory. Dorothy was united in
marriage to Roger Hale on September 4, 1938 in Nebraska. She
was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church and the Etude
Club.
Dorothy is survived by her
daughter, Dee Ann Olsen and husband, Ken of Spickard,
Missouri; three sons, Tom and wife, Judy of Holiday,
Florida, Bob and wife, Lorrie of St. Louis Park, Minnesota
and John and wife, Lori of Alden; 10 grandchildren; 13
great-grandchildren; a brother, Lee Osmanson of Omaha,
Nebraska; and a sister-in-law, Betty Osmanson of Omaha.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; husband, Roger; a brother, Roger; a sister,
Evelyn Rosien; brother-in-law, Richard Rosien;
sister-in-law, Donna Osmanson; brother-in-law and
sister-in-law, Richard and Margo Hale; and a brother and
sister in infancy.

WELLSBURG—Douglas “Fritz” Geerdes, 78, of Wellsburg, died on
Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at the Grundy County Memorial
Hospital-Long Term Care Unit, in Grundy Center.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 3, at the
Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg, with Pastor Todd
Rempe officiating. Burial followed in the Wellsburg Reformed
Church Cemetery, with full military rites provided by the
Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91 and the American Legion Post
No. 213. The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in
charge of the arrangements.

IOWA FALLS-Gary LaVerne Crosser Sr., 68, of Iowa Falls, died
on Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at the Ellsworth Municipal
Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, at
the First Christian Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the
Alden Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls is in
charge of the arrangements.
Gary LaVerne Crosser Sr.,
was born on September 17, 1939 in rural Iowa Falls, the son
of Kenneth and Mildred (Farrell) Crosser. He attended the
Sleepy Hollow Country School and graduated from the Owasa
High School in 1957. Gary was united in marriage to Karen
Ulrich on March 17, 1959, at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church
in Alden.
He had been a welder with Iowa Prestressed Concrete for 33
years. Gary loved his children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, church
activities, loved music and loved to sing.
Gary is survived by his
wife, Karen; a son, Gary Crosser Jr. and wife, Pam of
LaPorte City; four daughters, Brenda Hammarmeister and
husband, Steve of Iowa Falls, Scarlette Zompa and husband,
Don of Webster City, Shelly Kreitlow and husband, Kurt of
Ankeny and Carmen Crosser and husband, George Radecke of
Geneva, Illinois; eight grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bonnie Minteer and
husband, Lyle of Union and Geraldine Schulz and husband, Vic
of Nevada; and a sister-in-law, Velma Lois Crosser of Iowa
Falls.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; and a brother, Donald.

IOWA FALLS—Hazel M. Anderson, 96, of Iowa Falls, passed away
on Thursday, January 3, 2008, at the Scenic Manor Care
Facility, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, January 7, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa
Falls, with Pastor Kenneth Krueger officiating. Burial was
in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes
Iowa Falls Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.
Hazel Marie Winters, was
born on August 2, 1911 in Yadkinville, North Carolina, the
daughter of Miles F. and Lula (Reece) Winters. The family
moved to Iowa and lived near New Providence. She graduated
from the New Providence Community School and received her
teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in
Cedar Falls. She began teaching in area rural schools and
then the Iowa Falls Schools at the West Side Elementary.
On November 27, 1947, she was united in marriage to Merlin
A. Anderson at the Bethany Lutheran Parsonage, Iowa Falls.
To this union one daughter was born, Kathi. Hazel returned
to teaching in 1958 in the Alden Schools, completed her
bachelor’s degree and retired in 1976, teaching a total of
37 years. She continued her “teaching” with her
grandchildren when she visited them in Cedar Rapids and
Kansas and during their annual week-long visits to Iowa
Falls in the summer. She was a member of the Immanuel
Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls, and the Retired Teachers.
Hazel M. Anderson is
survived by her daughter, Kathi (Mark) Oppold of Overland
Park, Kansas; three grandchildren, Tricia (Byron) Vogel of
Olathe, Kansas, Stephen (Kelly) Oppold of Olathe and Michael
Oppold of Overland Park; five great-grandchildren, Kyle John
and Adam Lawrence Vogel and Colby Anthony, Makenna Christine
and Caeden Anderson Oppold, all of Olathe; three sisters,
Norma Krueger, Jeannette Payne and Kay Wood; and four
brothers, Stan, Lawrence, Millard and Don Winters.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Merlin Anderson; one sister, Ferne Winters; and six
brothers, Wallace, Floyd, Kenny, Merle, Willard and Lester
Winters.

Missouri—Rollin LeRoy Lightfield, entered into eternal rest
on Sunday, January 6, 2008, at the Excelsior Springs Medical
Center in Excelsior Springs, Missouri.
A committal service will be held on Friday, January 11, at
11:00 a.m., at the Missouri State Veteran’s Cemetery in
Higginsville, Missouri with military honors. The body will
be cremated. No public visitation is planned. The
arrangements have been entrusted to the Polley Funeral Home
of Richmond, Missouri.
Rollin was born on May 11, 1936, to Roy and Lillian Ames
Lightfield in Eldora. He graduated from the Eldora High
School in Eldora in 1954. He served honorably in the U.S.
Air Force and after discharge married Belma Jane Thorne of
Sheldahl in 1958.
He attended NIACC in Mason
City, graduating with an LPN degree in 1966. He worked for a
short time as a nurse, then turned to driving a truck for
several years until his early retirement in 1977 for health
reasons. He and Jane resided in Eldora until retiring to
Missouri in 1992.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and served
as past commander of the American Legion Post 237 in
Richmond, Missouri.
He is survived by his
children, Toni and Jerry Sorensen of Polo, Missouri, Toby
Lightfield of Polo and Tami and Ed Goligoski of Richmond,
Missouri; five granddaughters, Cassie, Jennie and Kaylee
Sorensen, Abby Lightfield and Brett Goligoski; along with
many friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death
by his beloved wife, Jane; his parents; and several close
friends.

ELDORA—Michael J. Maes,
50, of Eldora, died at his home from natural causes on
Sunday, January 6, 2008.
Following cremation, memorial services will be held in Fort
Collins, Colorado. Memorial services will also be held
on Thursday, January 17, at 6:30 p.m., at the United
Methodist Church in Bradford. The Creps-Abels Funeral
Home in Eldora is in charge of the arrangements.
Michael was born on
October 10, 1957 in Fort Collins, Colorado, the son of Rudy
and Betty (Medina) Maes. He graduated from the Poudre High
School in Fort Collins and then received a certificate of
fisheries from Vo-Tech Community College of Fort Collins.
He worked in his field of study in the Fort Collins area,
and on October 14, 1989, Michael was united in marriage to
Frances Marie Harms. They moved to Eldora in 1994, and
Michael worked at Auto Zone in Iowa Falls for several years
and then as accounts manager for Family Time until 2002. He
enjoyed fishing and hunting rocks and arrowheads.
Surviving is his wife,
Frances; son, James Maes of Covington, Virginia; daughter,
Dawn Maes of Iowa Falls; mother, Betty Medina; step-father,
Clint Ballard; and brothers, Patrick (Margie) of Fort
Collins, David (Linda) of Wellington, Colorado, John
(Belinda) of Wheatridge, Colorado and Tomas (Keri) of
Helena, Montana.
He was preceded in death by his father, Rudy.

IOWA FALLS—Willard K. Neuman, 78, of Iowa Falls, died on
Monday, January 7, 2008, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital
in Iowa Falls.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday,
January 12, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls,
with burial in the Northlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers,
memorials may be directed to the Bethany Lutheran Church or
the Hospice of North Iowa. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa
Falls is in charge of the arrangements.
Willard Keith Neuman, was
born on November 23, 1929 in Marshalltown, the son of Harry
and Marie (Mogle) Neuman. He graduated from the Iowa Falls
High School in 1948. Willard was united in marriage to
Darlene Dreyer on March 22, 1952, at the Little Brown Church
in Nashua.
He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club and the Loyal
Order of the Moose. He was a mentor for the Iowa Falls
Schools and was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church.
Willard did home delivery with Evergreen Dairy, drove a
retail truck to stores for A&E Dairy, retired from Berry
Plastics in 1992 and from I.F. Community Schools in 2004,
where he was a bus driver for many years.
Willard is survived by his
wife, Darlene Neuman of Iowa Falls; a daughter, Jacklyn Dee
Meyer Tripkosh and husband, Tim of Ely; four grandchildren;
one great-granddaughter; and two step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; twin brother, Wayne; and a son-in-law,
Wendell Meyer.

CLEAR LAKE—Harriet "Hap" Knutson, 78, of Clear Lake, died on
Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Memorial services were held on Friday, January 11, at the
St. John's Episcopal Church, Mason City, with Chaplain Barb
McCaulley officiating. The family suggests memorials be made
to St. John's Episcopal Church or Hospice of North Iowa. The
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of
the arrangements.
Hap was born on November
22, 1929 in Chicago,, Illinois, the daughter of Lindley and
Doris Anne (Welden) Sawyer. She graduated from the Carl
Schurz High School, Chicago, in 1947. She then attended and
graduated from the Ellsworth Jr. College, Iowa Falls, in
1949.
She worked for Welden
Brothers Construction in Iowa Falls as a bookkeeper.
She married Milford "Mick"
Knutson on September 5, 1953 in Iowa Falls. They lived on a
farm near Alden until moving to rural Gamer in 1957. In 1990
they retired from the farm and moved into Clear Lake.
She enjoyed playing with
her grandchildren, woodworking, sewing, gardening, baking,
being a Hospice volunteer, and her St. Bernard dogs and the
pigs. She was very active in the Ventura School System while
her children were in school. She was a vital member of the
St. John's Episcopal Church.
Hap is survived by her
husband, Milford "Mick" Knutson of Clear Lake; three
children, Shelley Knutson of Ventura, Matt Knutson and wife,
Bonnie of Clear Lake and Todd Knutson and wife, Kristi of
Ventura; five grandchildren, Mindy DeVries and husband, Levi
of North Liberty, Megan Drew and friend, Justin Birkhofer of
Garner and Colton, Carlie and Isaac Knutson of Ventura; one
sister, Ruth Ellen Blowney of Rolling Meadows, Illinois; and
many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; infant son, Timothy Donn; three
brothers-in-law, Myron Johnstone, William Blowney and Larry
Chiappe; and two sisters, Mary Anne Johnstone and Nancy Lou
Chiappe.

IOWA FALLS—Ronald K.
Laing, 66, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2008, at the
Mercy Hospice-Johnston after fighting a courageous battle
with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday,
January 16, at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa
Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls will be
assisting the family with service arrangements and cremation
care. Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Ron for
the wonderful, compassionate care that he and his family
received at Mercy Hospice-Johnston, Johnston, Iowa.
Ron was born on August 22,
1941 in Mineola, New York, to Margaret (Oerter) and Ronald
K. Laing Sr. After growing up on Long Island, New York and
graduating from the Huntington High School, he continued his
education at Farmingdale ATI. In March of 1961, he enlisted
in the U.S. Marine Corps. Ron served as a Presidential Honor
Guard in Washington, D.C.
While stationed in Hawaii he met Patricia J. Hosch. They
were married at the St. Augustines Church in Waikiki,
Hawaii, on December 28, 1964. Upon military discharge in
June of 1965, they moved to Long Island, New York, and lived
there until 1967. At that time, they moved to upstate New
York where Ron worked in sales for Wine Merchants. In 1975
they moved with their three children to Iowa Falls, where
Ron continued his sales career in the animal health field.
Ron enjoyed following sports, traveling, good food, great
conversation, the ocean and, most of all, spending time with
his wife, children and eight grandchildren. He will be
remembered by his family and friends for his hearty laugh,
great sense of humor and unconditional love and pride he had
for his family.
He is survived by his wife
of 43 years, Pat; two sons, Mike and wife, Shelana of
Beaverdale and Doug and wife, Christi of Blue Springs,
Missouri; one daughter, Renee and husband, Brad of Overland
Park, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Justin, Matthew, Jakob,
Joshua, Madison, Kaitlin, Halle and Megan; a brother,
Richard Laing of Summit, New Jersey; and a sister, Nancy
Reynolds of Long Island, New York.
He was preceded in death
by his parents.

IOWA FALLS—Ralph Colson,
82, of San Diego, California and formerly of Des Moines,
passed away on Monday, January 14, 2008, at the Paradise
Valley Hospital, National City, California.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 22, at the
Linn’s Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls, with Pastor Herb Kenyon
of the Church of the Open Bible officiating. Burial followed
in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Des Moines. The Linn’s Funeral
Home assisted the family with the arrangements.
Ralph Colson, was born on
August 16, 1925 at Des Moines, the son of Ray Windel and
Frances “May” (Browning) Colson. He attended the Des Moines
Community Schools through the ninth grade. He enlisted with
his twin brother in the U.S. Navy on August 19, 1942, and
retired a boatman’s mate 3rd class on August 19, 1962. He
then was employed by the Navy Exchange in San Diego from
1962 to 1972, when he moved to Oklahoma City and worked
construction until retiring again in 1980 to San Diego. He
was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch No. 61,
Chula Vista, Califoria and served as their president in
1982.
Ralph Colson is survived
by his daughter, Kathy Peraza Colson of San Diego; his
grandchildren, Alana Chertkow and Daniel Zapata; five
great-grandchildren, Rual Equiza, Alex Chertkow, Danny
Zapata, Gracie Zapata and Daniella Zapata; and two nieces,
Mary (Robert) Eakin and Kathy Kenoyer.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Ray and May Colson; and his twin brother,
Raymond Ray Colson.

ARIZONA—Iowa Falls native, James "Jim" Schalk, died on
Monday, January 14, 2008, while vacationing in Arizona.
Jim graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1955 and
Iowa State University in 1959. While attending the Iowa
Falls High School he participated on various sport teams,
lettering eight times.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Karl and Mabel Schalk; and three siblings,
Jack, Richard and Charles "Bud".
He is survived by his wife
of 48 years, Elaine; three children, Scot (Beth) of Blaine,
Minnesota, Bruce (Marsha) of Burnsville, Minnesota and
Laurel Galles of West Des Moines; and five grandchildren.
Jim was retired and living
in Boonville, Missouri, prior to his death. Memorial
services were held on Wednesday, January 23, in Des Moines.
Elaine continues to reside at their home in Boonville.

Henry Spieker, was born on
June 22, 1906 in rural Grundy County, the son of Fred and
Martha (Lindaman) Spieker. He attended Grundy County rural
schools. He was united in marriage to Clara Richtsmeier on
June 28, 1933 in Wall Lake, and after her death, he was
married to Stella Howes on June 14, 1980 in Iowa Falls.
Henry was a farmer until 1948, and then he was a carpenter.
He was a member of the Church of the Open Bible and served
on the church board for more than 30 years.
Henry is survived by a
grandson, Jason Herr and wife, Stacey of Cincinnati, Ohio;
sister, Ethel Mae Mulder and husband, Richard of
Parkersburg; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Spieker of Ackley.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; his two wives, Clara and Stella; two
daughters, Joan Spieker and Carol Jean Herr; four brothers,
Jerry, Fred, Raymond and Rudy Spieker; and four sisters,
Louise Kriemeyer, Myrtle Walbaum, Ann Stockdale and Loretta
Gieken.

IOWA FALLS—Robert Woods, 82, of Iowa Falls, passed away on
Thursday, January 17, 2008, at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa
Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday,
January 23, at the Linn’s Funeral Chapel, with Pastors Terra
Amundson and T.J. Norman officiating. The Linn’s Funeral
Homes Iowa Falls Chapel is assisting the family with the
arrangements.
Robert Franklin Woods, was
born on July 22, 1925 in Washington Township, Franklin
County, the son of Walter Franklin and Opal Fern
(Pfaltzgraff) Woods. He attended the Hampton Community
Schools, graduating with the class of 1943. He served with
the U.S. Army during World War II. On November 16, 1946,
Robert was united in marriage to Bertha Luceal Dohlman at
Des Moines. To this union three children were born, Linda,
James and Susan.
He was employed as a brick mason for many years, including
employment with Seedorf Masonry and Smith-Gehrls
Construction Co. He was the first masonry instructor for
Ellsworth College’s Masonry Program starting in 1979, until
his retirement in 1987. He also owned and operated the Iowa
Falls Montgomery Wards Catalog Store with his wife, Bertha.
Robert Woods is survived
by his two daughters, Linda Ingebritson and husband, Mike of
Iowa Falls and Susan Copp and husband, Lynn of Iowa Falls;
his son, James Woods and companion, Kathy Weydert of
Lakewood, Colorado; five grandchildren, Michelle Allen of
Scottsdale, Arizona, Ryan Allen and wife, Nichole of Iowa
Falls, Amanda Keninger and husband, Sam of Burnsville,
Minnesota, Evan Eichmeier of Iowa Falls and Christopher Copp
of Iowa Falls; six great-grandchildren, Alex, Ben and
Jillian Keninger of Burnsville, Minnesota, Carson and Leah
Allen of Iowa Falls and Ashleigh Eichmeier of Iowa Falls;
and his sister, Karen Heying of Kewanee, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Opal
Woods; his wife, Bertha Woods; one son-in-law, Victor Allen;
one brother, Eugene Woods; and one sister, Virginia Benson.

IOWA FALLS—Gary Fuller, 68, of Iowa Falls, died on Friday,
January 18, 2008, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 22, at the
First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in
the Berlin Cemetery, Owasa. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa
Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
Gary Neil Fuller, was born
on June 30, 1939 at Owasa, the son of Fred and Alta
(Holcomb) Fuller. He was in the U.S. Army National Guard for
four years. On February 22, 1959, Gary was united in
marriage to Judith Ward at the First United Methodist Church
in Iowa Falls. Gary had farmed, retiring in 2002.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was
on different church boards, also the Park Board, Fair Board
and on the Ag Board at Ellsworth Community College. He was a
Jackson Township Trustee and had been on the Owasa Fire
Department and was fire chief for several years.
Gary is survived by his
wife, Judy; three daughters, Terri Peterson and husband,
Jess of Iowa Falls, Beth Miller and husband, John of Waukee
and Pam Sicard and husband, Rick of Ackley; a son, John
Fuller and wife, Elaine of LaGrande; nine grandchildren,
Jill, Lisa and Jamie Peterson, Bryce and Grant Miller,
Dustin and Jessica Meyer, Bobbi Sicard and Nickolas Fuller;
a sister, Janice Knott and husband, Don of McCallsburg;
three sisters-in-law, Joan Birkemeyer of Minneapolis,
Minnesota, Jane Johns and husband, Dean of Ackley and Joyce
Metzger of Gaffney, South Carolina; and a special friend,
Jan Foster.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; and two brothers-in-law, Wayne Metzger and
Gene Birkemeyer.

ACKLEY—Francis Drew, 85, of Ackley, died on Friday, January
18, 2008, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday,
January 23, at the St. John’s United Church of Christ in
Ackley, with inurnment in the Oakwood Cemetery, Ackley. The
Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley is in charge of the
arrangements.
William Francis Drew, was
born on January 26, 1922 in Mystic, the son of Francis and
Bess (Entsminger) Drew. He graduated from the Sumner High
School in Sumner, Iowa, in 1940 and attended A.I.B. in Des
Moines. Francis was united in marriage to Margaret Rule on
October 9, 1946, at the Ackley Presbyterian Church. He was a
member of the St. John’s United Church of Christ and served
on the church council and was past president.
He owned and operated Drew’s Shoe Store from 1949-72. From
1972 until retirement, he was a salesman and shareowner in
Sailer Ford, Inc. He was a 50-year member and past Master of
the Masonic Fountain Lodge and also a member of the Iowa
Falls Elks Club B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1674. He served as a Boy
Scout Leader, member and past president of the Chamber of
Commerce in Ackley and served on the Ackley School Board.
Francis is survived by his
two daughters, Katherine Short and husband, David of Hubert,
North Carolina and Joan Abbas and husband, David of Iowa
Falls; a granddaughter, Margaret Wiesemann and husband,
Chris of Durham, North Carolina; two grandsons, Drew Short
and wife, Kate of Newport, North Carolina and Ross Abbas of
Iowa Falls; two great-grandchildren, Noble Short and Haylee
Abbas; a very special friend, Diana Ruhl of Iowa Falls; a
brother, Paul Drew of Murray, Kentucky; and three
sisters-in-law, Gladys Drew of Ackley, Helen Drew of San
Marcos, Texas and Jo Lamar of Iowa Falls.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; wife; and four brothers, Leo, Robert,
Delbert and Lyle Drew.

ELDORA—Keith Perry Van Patter, 84, of Eldora, died at the
Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, on Sunday, January 20, 2008.
Following cremation, memorial
services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, January
26, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in
Eldora, with Pastor Corey Larson officiating. Family will
greet friends from 9:00 a.m. until the service time. Burial
will follow in the Eldora City Cemetery.
Keith was born on October
9, 1923 in Eldora, the son of Edgar A. and Mildred R.
(Perry) Van Patter. He graduated from the Eldora High School
in 1941 and attended the National School of Aeronautics in
Kansas City. Keith worked for the Lockheed Corp. in
California until enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1944. He
served in France and Germany with Company M 345th Infantry
Battalion, 87th Infantry Division. Company M helped liberate
the German towns of Plauen and Coblenz.
Keith and Patricia Wolcott
were united in marriage at the First Congregational Church
in Eldora on July 26, 1945. He farmed until 1960, when he
was elected Hardin County Recorder. He held that job until
his retirement in 1995. Keith and Pat lived on a farm
northwest of Eldora that has been in the family for nearly
60 years.
Keith was a member of the First Congregational United Church
of Christ, the Eldora Kiwanis Club, the American Legion and
V.F.W. Posts in Eldora and the Legion's 40 & 8 Club.
Surviving are his wife,
Pat; daughter, Linda and husband, Harley Thornton of Des
Moines; son, Dennis Van Patter of Lakewood, Colorado;
granddaughters, Ann and husband, Dustin Mars and Kelli and
husband, Jim Kirkman; and great-grandchildren, Olivia,
Braden, Addison and Macy Mars, and Max and Claire Kirkman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister,
Doris Van Patter.

Per her wishes, Audry has
been cremated, and at this time there will be no public
services. The Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa is
assisting with the arrangements.
Audry was born
on November 19, 1926, to Fred and Greda (Gower)
Ritter. She married Lee “Bud” Wittmer on August 17, 1942 in
Rockwell City.
Survivors include two sons, Doug (Cindy) Wittmer of
Hampton and Gary (Linda) Wittmer of San Diego, California;
and three grandchildren, Adam, Jeff and Christy Wittmer.

Clara Frieda Hohn, was born
on November 24, 1919 at Mora, Minnesota,
the daughter of Charles and Wilhelmina (Stohr) Hohn. She
attended the Mora Community Schools. On March 28, 1953, she
was united in marriage to Howard Fredrick Nelson at
Princeton, Minnesota. Shortly after marriage they moved to Iowa
Falls, operating the Nelson Hardware Store with her husband,
retiring in 1975. She was a member of the First United
Methodist Church, Iowa Falls, and the Iowa Falls Senior
Citizen Center, where she held several offices.
Clara Nelson is survived by her son, John Nelson of
Princeton; two daughters, Marie Nelson of Stanford, Florida
and Diane Nelson of Cedar Rapids; 13 grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Leora Reynolds and
Darah Swanke.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Howard; a daughter, Kathy Leland; a daughter-in-law, Karen
Nelson; a grandchild, Alexis Tharp; and several brothers and
sisters.

Church, with burial to follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery,
both of Thornton. The Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Thornton, is handling

Opal was a former resident of Thornton, Alamo, Texas and
the Courtyard Estates in Bondurant. She is survived by seven
children, Audrene Hansen of Des Moines, Maureen (Jerry) Modderman
of Altoona, Jacqualine (Gary) Dirks of Onalaska, Wisconsin,
Martha Statlander of Thornton, Mary (Paul) Schlichting of
Thornton, Colleen Obrecht of Des Moines and Jeffrey (Becky) Obrecht
of Bondurant; four sisters;
two brothers; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one
sister-in-law and a brother-in-law; as well as many nephews
and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four

RADCLIFFE—Margie Stensland, 76, of Radcliffe, died on
Wednesday, January 23, 2008, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa
Falls.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 26, at
10:30 a.m., at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Radcliffe,
with the Rev. Earl Korhonen officiating. Margie will be
buried in the Radcliffe Cemetery. The Boeke Funeral Home in
Radcliffe is in charge of the arrangements.
Margie Darlene Stensland, was born on March 9, 1931 in
Buckeye, the younger of two children born to Oscar and Hazel
(Sjerven) Rupp. She received her education by attending
public school in Iowa Falls. On January 9, 1949, Margie was
united in marriage to Reuben Stensland at her parents’ home
in Iowa Falls. They settled on a farm north of Radcliffe.
She was a farm wife. Reuben passed away in March of 1992 and
she moved into Radcliffe the following year.
Through the years she was very active. She worked for
more than 20 years at the Cardinal Café. Margie was a member
of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Ladies Aide (ELCW) and
served on the Altar Guild. She was a member of the National
Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary, Radcliffe American Legion
Auxiliary, Hospice of North Iowa (Volunteer of the Month in
1996), Ellsworth Hospital Auxiliary, Married Ladies Harmony
Club, Radcliffe Book Club (Radcliffe Library supporter) and
the Red Hat Club.
Those remaining to cherish her memory include three sons,
Mike and wife, Molly of Iowa Falls, Bob and wife, Karen of
Radcliffe and Kent and fiancée, Jill of Ackley; six
grandchildren, Aaron and fiancée, Chelsie, Sara and husband,
Mike Truesdell, Graig and wife, Mindy, April and husband, Nick
Eller and Kate and Meredith Stensland; four
great-grandchildren, Jackson and Preston Stensland, Grace
Eller and Claire Truesdell; along with many other relatives
and friends.
Margie was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben; her
parents; and one brother, Kenneth Rupp.

MARION—Darwin Lee
Christopherson, 56, of Marion, died on Thursday, January 24,
2008, at the Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, of a
massive coronary attack.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 28, at the
Hitesville Gospel Hall, rural Aplington, with Mr. Russell
Nesbit and Mr. Allen Christopherson officiating. Vocalists
were Glory Bound: Russell Nesbit, Richard Nesbit, Fred
Nordman and Elaine Nordman, who sang “Where the Roses Never
Fade” and “What a Day That Will Be.” Congregational hymn was
“Amazing Grace.”
Honorary casket bearers were Don Bergman, Marvin Everts,
Harold Heffner and Bert Kampman. Casket bearers were Eric
Held, Michael Vierkandt, John Linn, Randy Knoll, David Flood
and Fred Nordman. Burial was in the Hitesville Cemetery,
rural Aplington. Flower Committee was LaVern and Myrna
Kluiter. The Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was
in charge of the arrangements.
Darwin Lee Christopherson,
was born the son of Vinton Paul and Darlene June (Stocks)
Christopherson on January 20, 1952, in Waterloo. He received
his education through the eighth grade in Aplington and
graduated from the Dumont High School.
Through the years he
worked at Oitzman Lumber in Dumont for a short time and the
Ackley Canning Factory. For the past 20 years he has been
employed with the Goodwill Industries in Cedar Rapids and
moved to the Cedar Rapids area at the same time.
Darwin attended the Marion
Gospel Hall. He enjoyed attending many sporting events with
his dad, especially at the University of Northern Iowa in
Cedar Falls. But his favorite team to watch was the Iowa
Hawkeyes. Darwin enjoyed playing many sports through the
years and had made the varsity baseball team early, while
still in the eighth grade. Darwin enjoyed taking yearly
fishing trips up north with his family at Sauk Lake in
Minnesota. On a regular basis he enjoyed his time with his
nieces and nephews and having coffee with his friends.
Darwin was preceded in
death by his mother, Darlene Christopherson on October 10,
2001; and a brother, Daylen Christopherson on September 25,
1975.
Darwin is survived by his
father, Vinton Christopherson of Parkersburg; one sister,
Debra (Rick) Held of Geneva; nieces and nephews, Heather
(Michael) Vierkandt, Hilary (friend, John Linn) Held and
Eric (friend, Mindy Ersland) Held; and two great-nieces,
Mckenna and Alyssa.

A. Sturm, 77, of Corinth, Texas, passed away on Thursday,
January 24, 2008, in Denton, Texas, after a long battle with
scleroderma.
Visitation was held on Monday, January 28, with a Rosary in
the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors. A Funeral Mass was
held on Tuesday, January 29, at the St. Mark Catholic
Church, with Father Tim Thompson officiating. In lieu of
flowers, memorials may be made to the Scleroderma
Foundation. The Bill DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton,
Texas, was in charge of the arrangements.
Clothilda
was born on June 27, 1930 in Bessemer, Michigan, to
Zigismund and Kamilia Kulik Popko. She married Joseph J.
Sturm Jr. on June 20, 1953 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She
retired from the city of Corinth where she supervised
Municipal Court for 15 years.
She was a charter member of the St. Mark Catholic Church in
Denton, where she served on many committees since 1991. Her
passions were her family, her church and gardening.
She is survived by her
husband, Joseph J. Sturm Jr. of Corinth; son, Joseph Sturm
III and wife, Pat of Londonderry, New Hampshire; daughters,
Camille Ott and husband, Darryl of Jacksonville, Florida,
Patty Robertson and husband, Tom of Spring Hill, Tennessee,
Diane Huffman and husband, Ed of Ames and Jacque Kilpatrick
and husband, Lorun of Bedford, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and
two sisters.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; daughter, Mary Lou Sturm; five sisters; and

Alta Mae McFarland, was
born on February 2, 1922 in Hewitt, Minnesota, the daughter
of Bernard and Susan (Hubbard) Irons. She attended country
school in Minnesota. On June 26, 1938, Alta was married to

was a member of the Missionary Alliance Church in
Blairsburg.
Alta is survived by her
two sons, James and wife, Andrea of Blairsburg and Robert of
Blairsburg; two daughters, Judi and husband, Melvin Katschke
of Blairsburg and Shirley and husband, John Wallace of
Webster City; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 19
great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Nora Burnett of Swea
City; and a brother, Kenneth Irons of Scottsdale, Arizona.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; husband; son, Larry McFarland; grandson,
Mike Katschke; and 14 siblings.

IOWA FALLS—Martha M. Sevde, 91, of Iowa Falls, passed away
on Friday, January 25, 2008, at the Ellsworth Municipal
Hospital, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday,
January 30, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls,
with the Rev. Kenneth Krueger officiating. Burial will be in
the Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The
Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted
with the arrangements.
Martha Marie Tynning, was
born on January 21, 1917, at her parents’ home in Lyon
Township, Hamilton County. She attended rural grade schools
and graduated from the Bethany High School, Mankato,
Minnesota. After high school she attended the Bethany
College, Mankato. She was employed as a telephone operator
with Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. at the Nevada Telephone
Exchange, Nevada, Iowa.
On August 12, 1943, Martha was united in marriage to Luther
“Adolph” Sevde at Story City. To this union three children
were born, Harley, Gary and Linda. She was a homemaker and
did the bookkeeping for her husband’s Story City Shell and
Iowa Falls Mobile Gas Stations and his Mac Tools route.
Martha Sevde is survived
by her children, Harley Sevde of Iowa Falls, Gary (Linda)
Sevde of Atkins and Linda Fank of Iowa Falls; four
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister,
Lanora Tynning of Iowa Falls.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, Ole and Ingeborg Tynning; her husband,
Adolph Sevde; a son-in-law, Clarence Fank; and a sister,
Florence Tynning.

HAMPTON—Orville S. Kinsel, 95, of Hampton, passed away on
Friday, January 25, 2008, at the Hampton Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 30, at
1:30 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.
Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Edward
R. Peterson will officiate.

IOWA FALLS—Delores “Dee” Smid, 72, of Iowa Falls, and
formerly of Garden City, Kansas, passed away on Monday,
January 28, 2008, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa
Falls.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. The Linn’s
Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Delores Rita Echart, was
born on February 27, 1935 at Santa Barbara, California. On
July 14, 1954, she was united in marriage to Joseph Kenneth
Smid at Clayton, New Mexico. They spent most of their lives
in Garden City, Kansas, where she was a member of the
Fellowship Baptist Church in Liberal, Kansas.
Dee Smid is survived by
her husband, Joe Smid of Alden; her children, Terri (Scott)
Sorensen of Iowa Falls, John Smid of Florence, Arizona and
Matt (Sabine) Smid of Knoxville, Tennessee; 11
grandchildren, Callie (Donavon) Reed, Cody Deaver, Amanda
Sorensen, Lisa Kemper, Derek Smid, Sarah Smid, Mary Smid,
Joey Smid, Emmy Smid, Natalie Smid and Hannah Smid; and
three great-grandchildren, Brant Reed, Leiah Vogel and Alex
Gonzales.
She was preceded in death by two children, Kenneth W. Smid
and Darla J. Smid.

Ackley, died on Monday, January 28, 2008, at her home,
surrounded by her family and under the loving care of
Hospice.
A Celebration of Life Service was held on Thursday, January
31, at the Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene, with the Rev.
Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. A private family committal
service will be at a later date.

St. Mary’s Hospice on Tuesday, January 29, 2008.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 2, at
4:00 p.m., at the Milwaukee Friends (Quaker) Meeting,
Milwaukee. There will be a private interment for the family.
The Feerick Funeral Home of Milwaukee is in charge of the
arrangements.
Shirley is survived by her
loving partner and companion, Alan Shucard; daughter, Susan
(Bill) Olson; and sons, Scott (Lisa), Jeffrey (Erica) and
Jonathan (Laurie) Johnson. She was a proud grandmother of 14
exceptional grandchildren; and a dear sister of Marilyn
(Don) Poulson and Carol (Ken) Morgan; as well as other
relatives and many dear friends.

AUSTIN, Texas—Marvin Wikert, 80, passed away on Thursday,
January 31, 2008, at his home in Austin, Texas.
Marvin was born near
Ackley on April 16, 1927, to Frank and Viola Wikert. Marvin
is survived by two sons, Brian and wife, Pamela and Ronald,
all of Austin; a brother, Darwin of Hampton; sisters,
Shirlee of Stanhope, Karen of Coralville and Mildred and
Marlene of Palmer, Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene; his parents;
his brother, Duane; and a sister, Sandra Berndt.
