Mystery Surrounds I.F. Women's Death
By: Kent Thompson
, Managing Editor
July 19, 2003
The
Ackley Police Department and state and local investigators converged
on an area northeast of the AGWSR High School in Ackley, Thursday
morning, after a rural Iowa Falls woman was found in a pool of blood in the street at
the intersection of 4th Avenue and Grundy Street about 5:15 a.m.
The Ackley Police Department with assistance from the Iowa
State Patrol, Hardin County Sheriff's Office and Iowa Division of
Criminal Investigation, are investigating a suspicious circumstance
involving the death of a rural Iowa Falls woman,
Janet Abbas. The Ackley Ambulance
was dispatched and Abbas was taken to an area hospital where she was
reportedly air lifted by Life Flight helicopter to Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa in Mason City. She was admitted to the intensive
care unit and died early on Friday morning.
Gary Oelmann, transportation director for the AGSWR School was on
his way to work on Thursday, when he discovered Abbas lying in the
street. "She was not conscious at all. Her eyes were fixed and about
half-open and I could tell she was in trouble," Oelmann told the
Times-Citizen.
He said he immediately tried to call authorities on his cell phone,
but when that did not work, he went into his office at the Ackley
High School and dialed 911.
Oelmann said Ackley Police Sergeant Robert Smith arrived on the
scene within a minute or two and the Ackley Ambulance arrived a few
minutes later.
"I don't know what happened at all. I saw the back of her head was
pretty bloody," said Oelmann. "I told the authorities what I knew."
Thursday morning, law enforcement authorities were searching a
vacant lot at the corner of 4th Avenue and Grundy Street for
possible clues. An area about 1 1/2 blocks square was cordoned off
with yellow crime scene tape. It extended from the extreme northeast
corner of the AGWSR High School building grounds to the intersection
of 4th Avenue and Butler Street. It then extended north to include
the area around the house and front yard of a property at 614 Butler
Street, the LaVerne Wiarda home. Wiarda is a friend of Janet Abbas.
The area was secured and investigators conducted interviews with
neighbors and others who may have seen Abbas late Wednesday or early
Thursday morning.
Pearl Wolf, a neighbor to the residence, said she heard no commotion
during the night. "I just heard this morning that they found a woman
in a pool of blood," she said.
Bradley Kappel lives at 1108 Third Ave. in Ackley. He said he
escorted Jan Abbas to the house at 614 Butler St. Wednesday
night/Thursday morning.
"I took her home about midnight," he said. "We had been drinking at
the bar. She must have left the house after that. This is quite a
shock, she has been a family friend since I was a little kid,"
Kappel said. "It's very sad."
Al Reiter with Soundshow Entertainment was playing karaoke at
Shennanigan's bar in Ackley Wednesday night. Reiter said at about
11:40 p.m., Abbas was walking to the front of the establishment when
she fell and hit her head on the door. Reiter said he and a couple
of other patrons helped her up. "That was the last time I saw her,"
he said.
Later Thursday morning, the investigation shifted to the downtown
area. There was a spot of blood on the sidewalk in the area between
the old Roth soda fountain shop and Don's Barber Shop.
The Ackley World-Journal office had a pair of eyeglasses turned in
Thursday morning. The eyeglasses were taken by law enforcement
authorities, believing them to have belonged to the victim.
A
press release from the Ackley Police Department said the
investigation is continuing. There were unconfirmed reports Friday
that the incident had been ruled an accident, however Ackley Police
Chief Pat Scallon was not available to confirm or deny those
reports. A dispatcher for the Ackley PD said the information on the
press release was all that was being released about the case at
press time Friday.
Abbas had been a bartender at the Elliot-Keninger American Legion
Post in Ackley for several years.
