HAMPTON - Labena "Bea" Jones of Hampton died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at
the Hampton Care Center in Hampton. Funeral services will be Monday,
Jan. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hampton with
Rev. Robert Conner officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday, Jan. 4, from 1 - 3 p.m. at the
Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.
Bea was born Jan. 9, 1913, in Franklin County to Peter and Tena (Dirksen)
Halfwassen. She attended the Chapin Consolidated School and graduated in
1930. In 1931, Bea enrolled in the Hamilton Business College in Mason
City, and completed a stenographic and secretarial course. She was
employed for a short time in the offices of the Mason City Brick and
Tile Co. In 1934, she came to Hampton and was employed for a short time
in the "Corn Hog" office under the direction of Manning Howell. In April
1934, Bea was employed by the Franklin County Relief Office and in 1945,
was promoted to Director of Social Services until her retirement in
September of 1978. On July 1, 1957, Bea was united in marriage to Ralph
Jones. She was a member of the Eastern Star and received her 50-year pin
and certificate in November, 1989. Bea was active in the United
Methodist Church of Hampton, and a member of the Leah Circle and Naomi
Circle. She was a member for over 40 years of the Ladies' Prayer Group.
Survivors include her great-niece, Sherry McKinstrey of Pella; one
great-nephew, Keith Halfwassen of Eldora; and a sister-in-law, Ardis
Fredericks of Hampton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph;
her parents; two brothers, Conny and Henry Halfwassen; and two sisters,
Elizabeth Albers and Lena Meints.

Veone A. Rule

HAMPTON - Veone A. Rule, 93, of Hampton died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at
the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Funeral services were Friday,
Jan. 2, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton with Rev. Marlys
Ruth officiating. Burial was in the Hampton Cemetery.
Veone was born June 22, 1910, in Belmond to Charles and Tillie (Tomson)
Peterson. She graduated from Hampton High School in 1928, and from UNI
in 1932. On April 10, 1938, Veone was united in marriage to John S. Rule
at Hampton. She was a substitute teacher and was employed by IPS in
Hampton. Veone was a member of the First Congregational United Church of
Christ.
Survivors include one son, Dr. Charles G. Rule of Houston, Texas; two
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by her parents, one sister, and one brother.

FALLS - Ronald G. Russell, 61, of Iowa Falls died Saturday, Jan. 3,
2004, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services
were Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ in
Alden with Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Burial was in the Union Cemetery
in Iowa Falls.
Ronald was born April 26, 1942, at Iowa Falls to George and Isabelle
(Reynolds) Russell. He attended Iowa Falls High School and mechanical
school in Kansas City, Mo. On Aug. 29, 1964, Ronald was united in
marriage to Sheryl Lindeman at St. John's United Church of Christ in
Ackley. He was a member of the Iowa Falls Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No.
1331. Ronald was employed by Farmland in Iowa Falls from 1964 - 1987,
and the past years by SSX Trucking Co. of Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include one son, Troy of Sturgis, S.D., and his children,
Cassandra and Tyler; one daughter, Michele Russell of Sturgis, S.D., and
her children, Devin, Adam and Lacy; a special friend, Marie Blanchard of
Iowa Falls, and her children; one sister, Linda Bahr of Iowa Falls; a
half-sister, Danielle Russell of Waterloo; and his mother-in-law,
Bernice Lindeman of Ackley.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sheryl, and a brother,
Roger, in infancy.

ACKLEY - Anna Willhelmina Feikes, 81, of Ackley died Friday, Jan. 2,
2004, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Funeral services were
Monday, Jan. 5, at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls with
Rev. Don Preston officiating. Burial was in the Northlawn Memory Gardens
in Iowa Falls.
Anna
was born June 5, 1922, to Jake and Nellie (Schroeder) Koop at the family
farm in Hardin County. She attended Robertson and other country schools
north of Ackley. On Feb. 24, 1947, Anna was married to Meint Feikes at
Ackley. She was a housewife. Anna was a member of the First United
Methodist Church and the church circle.
Survivors include her husband, Meint, of Ackley; one daughter, Elaine
Brannen, and husband Harry of Nevada; five grandsons, Ryan and Scott
Meyer of Nevada, Harry Brannen Jr. and wife Suzie of Pleasant Hill, and
Travis and Kevin Brannen of Des Moines; one granddaughter, Kristina
Brannen of Indianola; two great-grandsons, Colton and Kaleb Brannen; and
one brother, Jake Koop and wife Esta of Ackley.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Reinhart Koop; two
sisters, Gladys Brower and Clara Surratt; and an infant sister, Anna.

CRESTON - Birrell Blythe White, 80, of Creston, formerly of Des Moines,
died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at her home in Creston. Memorial services
were Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston.
Private burial will be at a later date in the Union Cemetery in Iowa
Falls.
Birrell was born on June 8, 1923, to Ralph J. and May (Wonderly) Harmon
at Iowa Falls. She graduated from Iowa Falls High School. In 1974, she
was united in marriage to Denver T. White in Des Moines. Birrell was a
homemaker. She was employed by Vicky's in Des Moines. Birrell previously
lived in Iowa Falls, Des Moines and Creston.
Survivors include one stepdaughter, Beverly Pierce of Denver, Colo.;
three stepsons, Bill White and wife Vicky of Des Moines, Jerry White and
wife Marcia of Creston, and Charles Comley and wife Lorraine of Turlock,
Calif.; two cousins, Margaret Rehm of Rochester, Minn., and Gene Brown
and wife Betsy of Iowa Falls; and one sister-in-law, Sue Harman of
California; 14 step-grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband,; two brothers, Jerry
and Wilde Harmon; and a niece, Kathy Harmon.

FALLS - Elsie Sisam, 88, of Bloomington, Minn., formerly of Iowa Falls,
died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at the Fairview Health Services in
Minneapolis, Minn. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the
Cottage Community Church, Co. Hwy. D-41, rural Iowa Falls, with Rev.
Russell Surls and lay pastor Kenneth Nason officiating. Burial will be
in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.
Elsie
was born Nov. 23, 1915, at Hubbard to Edwin and Anna (Frazier) Barnhart.
She was a 1933 graduate of Iowa Falls High School, and a graduate of
Ellsworth Community College. Elsie also attended Iowa Teachers' College
in Cedar Falls and taught country school for several years. On June 3,
1939, she was united in marriage to Howard Sisam. The couple made their
home on the family farm north of Hubbard where they farmed until 1975.
Following her husband's death, she moved to Iowa Falls. Elsie was a
member of Cottage Community Church where she was a Sunday school
teacher, church secretary, church pianist and organist. Elsie remained
active in the church women's groups until her illness in 2002, at which
time she moved to Bloomington to be near her family.
Survivors include two sons, Edwin and wife Dorothy of Eden Prairie,
Minn., and Dale and wife Sandy of Chaska, Minn.; one daughter, Virginia
Green and husband Victor of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Marian Barnhart of Sebring,
Fla.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, one sister, Mary; and
one brother, Kenneth.

Waldo Lepper

HUBBARD - Waldo Lepper, 94, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at the Hubbard
Care Center in Hubbard. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan. 7, at
10:30 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard with Rev. John
Attaway officiating. Burial will be in the Hubbard Cemetery.
Waldo
was born Sept. 27, 1909, on the farm of his parents, Louis and Martha (Neubauer)
Lepper, between Hubbard and Radcliffe. He attended the McCoy School on
Highway 175. In 1932, he was united in marriage to Mildred Dunn in
Lincoln, Neb. They settled on a farm east of Radcliffe where Waldo, his
father, brother and uncles built the buildings. Waldo operated that same
farm until he retired into a home they built in Hubbard in 1985. Waldo
did carpenter work for his family and for others from time to time. He
was one of the original board members who initiated and helped build the
Hubbard Golf Course. Waldo was a member of the Zion United Church of
Christ in Hubbard where he served on the council and parsonage building
committee. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying golf, hunting, fishing
and horseshoe pitching. Waldo was runner-up in the state championship of
the Farmers' Horseshoe Division at the state fair. He also loved to read
and served on the Hubbard Library Board.
Survivors include one son, Marvin, and wife Marlene of Radcliffe; one
daughter, Lois Nassen, and husband Kenneth of Hubbard; eight
grandchildren, David Botton, Diane Holt, Dean Botton, Sally Harskamp,
Kathy Schwister, Cindy Chidester, Michael Fjelland and Taylor Fjelland;
13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred; a brother,
Erwin Lepper; and a granddaughter, Darla Vander Werf.

BOONE
- John Francis Pickens, 34, of Boone died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004. Funeral
services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at First Baptist
Church in Stratford with Rev. Jim Mead officiating. Visitation will
continue on Saturday at the church from 9 a.m. to the time of service.
Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, north of Stratford with full
military honors conducted at graveside by Boone Veterans Council.
Memorials may be made to the family to be used at their discretion.
John was born Feb. 25, 1969, in Santa Cruz, Calif., to Alan and Melba
(Larson) Pickens. He attended school in Eldorado, Kan., and the
Stratford High School. He and his family lived in the Buckeye area for a
short while. He attended the First Baptist Church in Stratford. On May
1, 1997, John exchanged vows with Misty D. Wheelock in Ottumwa. He
served in the United States Army from 1992 to 1994. He was a Private
First Class E3 and worked as an aircraft structural repairer, utility
helicopter repairer, flight medic and avionic repairman. John was
employed as a welder making combines at Almaco in Nevada. He was also a
member of the Hunt & Fish Club, the North American Fish Club and the
Boiler Makers Union. He enjoyed his family, fishing, camping, collecting
arrowheads and Harley-Davidson Motorcycle statues.
Survivors include his father, Alan Pickens of Thornton, Colo.; his
mother, Melba Larson of Cottonwood Falls, Kan.; his wife, Misty; his
son, Quentin Lee of Boone and two other children Kayla and Devin;
several brothers and sisters, several aunts, one uncle, and several
nieces, nephews and cousins.

Belva was born Nov. 22, 1921, in Vincent to James and Ethel (Vandeventer)
Dingman. She attended school in Webster City. On Jan. 5, 1940, Belva was
united in marriage to Lewis Neubauer. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one stepson, Delroy Neubauer of Williams; two sisters,
Lila Mix of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mavis Kleckner of Webster City;
two brothers, Duane and Gerald Dingman both of Webster City; five
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and six
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lewis; an infant
daughter, Reta Kay Wilson; four brothers, Isaac, Vernon, Francis and
William Dale Dingman; and three sisters, Wilma Graham, Lillian Logston
and Viola Doolittle.

Donald E. Hoversten

CLEAR
LAKE - Donald E. Hoversten, 72, of Clark Lake died suddenly of a heart
attack Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in
Mason City. Memorial services will be Monday, Jan. 12, at Zion Lutheran
Church, 112 N. 4th St., Clear Lake. Inurnment will be at Memorial Park
Cemetery in Mason City. Visitation will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the
church prior to the memorial service. Memorials may be given to the Don
Hoversten Memorial Fund.
Don was born July 28, 1931, to Elmer and Bessie (Weaver) Hoversten in
Williams in Hamilton County. He graduated from Alden High School in
1949, and entered the U.S. Air Force Dec. 29, 1949, in Des Moines. Don
was an Airman First Class, serving during the Korean War and was
discharged July 16, 1952. On Aug. 2, 1952, he was united in marriage to
Jacqueline H. Hall at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived most
of their married life in Clear Lake. Don was employed by the Clear Lake
Bakery for seven years before joining the staff of the Clear Lake
Sanitary District in 1973, where he was employed until his retirement in
1993. Don was a collector of wooden trains, enjoyed gardening, watching
television game shows and football, especially the Vikings and Hawkeyes,
going to the casino and playing games of chance. He liked to dine out
with his family and spend time with his grandkids. Don was a member of
Zion Lutheran Church, American Legion and Thrivent.
Survivors include his wife, Jackie, of Clear Lake; three children, Susan
Swartwood and husband Steve of Mason City, William Hoversten, and Kathy
Verhalen and husband Eric all of Clear Lake; five brothers, Wally,
Merle, Dave, Butch and Ron Hoversten; five sisters, Evelyn Kinstle,
Verna Scott, Betty Richtsmeier, Fran Rout and Delia Rockow; five
grandchildren, Joshua Heginger of Mason City, and Justin, Nathan,
Nicholas and Jami Verhalen all of Clear Lake; and one
great-granddaughter, Kourtney Verhalen-Hare of Mason City.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Richard, Robert,
Harold and Gene; and two infant sons, Todd and James.

Neva Kasischke

RADCLIFFE - Neva Bertha Caroline Kasischke, 88, of Radcliffe died
Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Funeral
services were Friday, Jan. 9, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alden
with Rev. Jay Jaeger officiating. Burial was in the Hubbard Cemetery in
Hubbard.
Neva was born April 8, 1915, in Buckeye Township to Charles and
Wilhelmina (Kulow) Kasischke. She attended rural schools in Buckeye
Township and graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1933. Neva
completed the High School Normal Training course and after graduation
began teaching in the rural schools of Hardin County. Her teaching
career included 24 years in rural schools and 21 years as a member of
the Radcliffe Community School faculty. Neva received an Associate of
Arts degree from Ellsworth College and her Bachelor of Science degree
from Wartburg College. Additional studies were pursued at the University
of Northern Iowa (ISTC), Simpson College, Iowa State University and the
University of Iowa. Neva was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the
Alden Lutheran Ladies Aid, Retired School Personnel and the Iowa State
Education Association. She loved to work with young people and taught
Vacation Bible School, Sunday School and had been a member of the church
choir.
Survivors include one sister, Bernice Kasischke of Seward, Neb.; her
nieces and nephew Reva Merchant and husband Greg of Little Elm, Texas,
Royle Duncan and wife Jo of Alden, and Ruth Braymen and husband Brian of
Ames; five great-nieces and great-nephews, Ben Braymen, Bethany Duncan,
Jay Duncan, Jim Merchant and Jill Merchant; and a brother-in-law, Howard
Duncan of Alden.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Vera Duncan and an infant
sister, Marie.

- W. James (Jim) Peterson, 80, of Hampton, formerly of Alden, died
Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton.
Memorial services were Thursday, Jan. 8, at the United Methodist Church
in Popejoy with Rev. Bob Miller officiating.
Jim was born June 1, 1923, in Alden to Oscar and Mae (Donelson)
Peterson. He graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1940. Jim served
in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943-46. On Dec. 22, 1945, he was
united in marriage to Dorothy (Dottie) Nassen. Jim was a farmer in the
Alden area. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dottie of Alden; one son, Dennis Peterson of
Mount Vernon; one daughter, Kaye Surls of Iowa City; three
grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Nellie White of Alden
and Karen Classon and husband Gary of Hiawatha; and one brother, Merle
Peterson and wife Beverly of Alden.

ROCKFORD - Bernice E. Parcher, 82, of Rockford died Monday, Jan. 12,
2004, at the Nora Springs Care Center. Funeral services will be held
Thursday, Jan. 15, at 1:30 p.m. at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles
City. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford. Friends may
call at the Hauser Funeral Home Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and for one hour
prior to service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to
the Salvation Army or to the Nora Springs Care Center.
Bernice Eleanor was born March 4, 1921, in Ellis Township in Hardin
County to Albert and Dora (Tjarks) Silvest. She graduated from Buckeye
High School. Bernice married Merle Clock. She later married Donald V.
Parcher on Sept. 11, 1970, at the Methodist Church in Albert Lea, Minn.
Bernice was an active member of the Methodist Church for 65 years. She
enjoyed traveling and going to livestock sales across the country.
Survivors include her husband, Donald V. Parcher; three sons, Merlin
Clock, Dennis Clock, and Jerry Clock, all of Alden; nine stepchildren,
Pat Verink of Iowa Falls, Lou Ella Barker of Ohio, Jim Clock of Iowa
Falls, Richard Clock of Des Moines, Larry Parcher of Rudd, Steven
Parcher of Rockford, Bonnie Caspers of Rockwell, Ronald Parcher of
Rockford, and Janet Winter of Letts; and two sisters, Eva Ann Raska of
Nevada and Dorothy Bates of Iowa Falls. Bernice was preceded in death by
her parents; her first husband, Merle, in 1967; one son; four brothers;
one sister; two stepsons, and one stepdaughter.

Nettie Jungling

APLINGTON - Nettie Jungling, 95, of Aplington died Saturday, Jan. 10,
2004, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. Funeral services were
Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Bethel Reformed Church, rural Aplington, with Rev.
Scott Summers officiating.
Nettie was born Jan. 23, 1908, to Geert (George) and Stientja Staas
Haats Eilderts in Wymeer, Germany. The family moved to the United States
when she was one year of age. She received her education in a country
schoolhouse in rural Aplington, Butler County. On Feb. 15, 1927, Nettie
was united in marriage with Folkert Jungling in the Bethel Reformed
Church parsonage. They farmed north of Aplington until 1970, when they
moved to their present home. Nettie was a lifelong active member of
Bethel Reformed Church. Flowers, gardening and traveling were among her
favorites.
Survivors include three daughters, Gerdena Mudderman of Parkersburg,
Esther Jungling of Waterloo, and Carol Kromminga and husband Arlen of
Ackley; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Jungling of Aplington; eight
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Folkert; one son, Gerald
Jungling; a son-in-law, Gratus Mudderman; her parents; one sister,
Christina Freese; three brothers, Dick, Harm and Koert Eilderts; two
half brothers; four half sisters; three stepbrothers; and two
stepsisters.

HAMPTON - Thomas A. Reents, 76, of Hampton died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at
Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Funeral services were Monday, Jan.
12, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton with Rev. Karl Bollhagen
officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery in Hampton.
Thomas was born Aug. 19, 1927, in Dumont to John and Viola (Wickham)
Reents. He attended Dumont High School. Thomas served in the U.S. Army
in the Korean Conflict. On Sept. 19, 1953, he was united in marriage to
Marie Meier in Germany. Thomas was employed by the Hampton High School
as the head custodian. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and
the VFW in Dumont. Thomas enjoyed visiting with friends over coffee.
Survivors include his wife, Marie, of Hampton; one sister, Evelyn
Spangenberg of Hampton; and one brother, Harold Reents and wife Doris of
Dumont. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lyle
Reents.

WELLSBURG - Luella Lindaman, 90, of Wellsburg died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004,
at Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Reinbeck. Funeral services were
Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg with
Pastor Todd Rempe officiating. Burial followed at the Wellsburg Reformed
Church Cemetery in Wellsburg. Memorials may be directed to the Wellsburg
Reformed Church.
Luella was born July 15, 1913, in Wellsburg to Otta and Elizabeth
"Lizzie" (Ackerman) Tjaden. She received her education in Wellsburg and
graduated from the Wellsburg High School. On Jan. 8, 1934, Luella was
united in marriage to Woodrow "Woody" Lindaman in Wellsburg. They made
their home in Wellsburg and lived there all their married lives. Luella
was a homemaker until she went to work for the U.S. Post Office in
Wellsburg, working as a postal clerk for 10 years. In 2000, she moved to
Arlington Place in Grundy Center.
Luella was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, where she sang in
the church choir for many years. Luella enjoyed painting, gardening,
sewing and buying clothes.
Survivors include three granddaughters, Carol Wagner and husband Gary of
Carlsbad, Calif., Sue Boggioni and husband Larry of Santee, Calif., and
Barb Dennstedt and husband Steve of Ramona, Calif.; four
great-grandchildren, Amy Boggioni and Molly Boggioni of Santee, Calif.,
and Michael and Kristina Estes of Ramona, Calif.; and one son-in-law,
E. A. Mauri of Menifee, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
her husband, Woody; and one daughter, Lila Le Mauri.

LUVERNE, Minn. - Bonnie Jordahl, 86, Luverne, Minn., died Sunday, Jan.
11, 2004, at Luverne Community Hospital. Funeral services were
Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Dell B. Sanderson
officiating. Burial was at Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
Bonnie was born to Olaf and Bessie (Shelby) Holmied on Feb. 18, 1917, in
Kintyre, N.D. The family moved to Luverne and Bonnie graduated from
Luverne High School in 1935. She attended Valley City State College in
N.D. and then Mankato State Teachers' College in Mankato, Minn. On June
1, 1939, she married Harold Jordahl in Luverne. The couple lived in
Texas and California but returned to Luverne where Bonnie taught country
school for several years. She also worked as a nurses' aide at Luverne
Community Hospital. Bonnie was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church
in Luverne, a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and a lifelong director
of Blue Mound Area Theatre. She was a noted area artist and author,
known for her rosemaling, embroidering and her book, "Herman's Palace,"
which was published in 1995.
Survivors include two sons, Jon Jordahl and wife Carol of Alden, and
Jerre Jordahl and wife Kathy of Ironton, Minn.; one daughter, Janine
Papik and husband Gary of Luverne; 10 grandchildren including Jennifer
Bicknese and husband Todd of Iowa Falls, Jody Larson and husband Aaron
of Ankeny, Justin Jordahl and wife Tiffany of Alden, Joyce Bagley and
husband Mike and Jill Jordahl of Iowa Falls; six great-grandchildren
including Ashley and Addalee Bicknese of Iowa Falls, Emily Larson of
Ankeny and Justine Jordahl of Alden.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold, and one
sister, Orla Rober.

PLEASANT - William "Bill" Dale Steding, 48, of Mount Pleasant, formerly
of Ackley, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Waterloo. Funeral services
were Thursday, Jan. 15, at the United Methodist Church in Ackley with
Rev. Patricia Connor officiating. Burial was in the Hazelgreen Cemetery
in Ackley.
Bill was born May 28, 1955, in Eldora to Dale H. and June (Simpson)
Steding. He was a 1973 graduate of Ackley High School. He was married to
Cindy Bergman at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ackley. The couple later
divorced. Bill was a former police officer of Nashua and Ackley, and was
currently employed as a truck driver for Hawkeye Woodshavings. He
enjoyed Harley-Davidson motorcycles, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include one son, Will Steding and wife Heather of Grundy
Center; two granddaughters, Haleigh and Charlotte Steding of Grundy
Center; three brothers, Terry and wife Teresa of Eldora, Larry and wife
Ruby of Iowa Falls, and Gary and wife Darla of Steamboat Rock; one
sister, Sheril Farris of Ackley; and many nieces and nephews.
He
was preceded in death by parents and a sister, Mary Higgins.

APLINGTON - Geraldine Uhlenhopp, 71, of Allison, formerly of Aplington,
died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Redman-Schwartz Funeral
Chapel in Aplington with Rev. Todd Repe of the Wellsburg Reformed Church
officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Allison Health Care
Center.
Geraldine was born Nov. 11, 1932, to Harm and Grace (Hartema) Williams
near Allison in Butler County. She graduated from Aplington High School
in 1950. Geraldine was united in marriage with George R. Uhlenhopp and
the couple later divorced. She was a former member of the First Reformed
Church in Aplington. Geraldine became a resident of Allison Health Care
Center in Allison in August, 1977.
Survivors include four sons: Keith and friend Nancy of Parkersburg,
Steve and friend Deb of Aredale, Kenny and wife Paula of Dumont and Gary
and wife Jami of Ackley; one daughter, Darla Buseman and husband Rick of
Wellsburg; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Randy Uhlenhopp; her parents,
three brothers, Jerry, Herman and Harold Williams and four sisters,
Hattie Jurgena, Jennie Baskins, Dena Reints and Ann Springer.

ACKLEY - Darlene E. Kantak, 71, of Ackley, formerly of Eldora, died
Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at her son's home in Eldora. Funeral services
were Thursday, Jan. 15, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora with
Pastor David Splett officiating. Burial was at Eastlawn Memory Garden in
Eldora.
Darlene was born Oct. 27, 1932, to Howard and Tillie Maisel. She
attended the Hubbard school system. On Feb. 5, 1952, she was united in
marriage to Everett E. Kantak. The couple made their home in Eldora
where Darlene worked as a cook at the Eldora Nursing and Rehab Center
for nine years, retiring in 1995. In 2000, they moved to Ackley. Darlene
was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her son, Ronald of Eldora; a son-in-law, Gary Jackson
of Marshalltown; one sister, Betty Ginger and husband Delbert of Britt;
three grandchildren, Christine and Keith Jackson and Adam Kantak; and
one great-granddaughter, Joycelyn Roberts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett; one daughter, Joyce
Jackson; one sister, Jennie Patzner; and her parents.

Inurnment will be in the Love of Christ Lutheran Church in Mesa, Ariz.

Joan was born July 15, 1932, in Clarion to Melvin and Mabel (Joan) Jerde.
She graduated from the Clarion High School and attended Iowa State
University. On Dec. 13, 1953, she was married to E. Monte Potter in
Clarion. Joan worked with her husband at Harris-Potter Insurance from
1967-1993. She was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Iowa Falls, and participated in Bible studies. Joan was a member of the
Business of Professional Women (BPW).
Survivors include one son Tod and wife Michele of Mesa, Ariz.; one
daughter, Katy Clark, and husband Jere of Phoenix, Ariz.; two
granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Ashley Potter of Mesa; a sister-in-law, Jan
Jerde of Clarion; and a nephew, Joe Jerde of Clarion.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Monte; and brother Jim
Jerde.

at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus in Mason City. Funeral
services will be Friday, Feb. 6, at 1 p.m. at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral
Home in Hampton with Mark Luckiesh officiating. Inurnment will be in the
Hampton Cemetery. There will be no visitation. There will be a luncheon
following the memorial service at Bryan and Marlene Tapp's house, 221
1st St. S.E., Hampton.
Dorothy was born Feb. 27, 1934, in Rockford to Susie Mehmen. She
graduated from Rockford High School in Rockford. On April 3, 1954, she
was married to Leonard Tapp in Austin, Minn. Dorothy was a homemaker.
She enjoyed Bingo, her family, playing cards, reading, crossword puzzles
and knitting hats for the needy and her family members.
Survivors include three daughters, Brenda Cerwinske and husband Marvin,
Vicki Miller and husband Arlyn, all of Hampton, and Susan Birdsall and
fiancé Bill Ringham of Mason City; three sons, David and wife Kimberly
of Mason City, Bryan and wife Marlene and Walter and wife Ruth, all of
Hampton; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her mother and stepfather; her husband, Leonard;
one daughter, Belinda; and two grandsons.

William "Bill" Eighmey, 48, of Iowa Falls, Iowa passed away Friday at
the North Iowa Mercy Medical Center, Mason City, due to complication of
diabetes. Funeral services for Bill Eighmey will be 1:30 Tuesday,
January 20, 2004, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls. Visitation
will be from 2:00 to 8:00 pm Monday at the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa
Falls Chapel, with the family receiving friends between the hours of
6:00 and 8:00 pm. Burial will be at the Northlawn Memory Gardens, Iowa
Falls.
William "Bill" Joseph Eighmey was born October 23, 1955, at Waterloo,
Iowa, the son of James and Barbara "Mokosak" Eighmey. He graduated from
Waterloo East High School. He had been employed with Standard Battery
and Waterloo Bowl Inn of Waterloo, until moving to Iowa Falls in 1985
where he was the assistant manager of Pla-Mor Bowl in Iowa Falls until
health forced his early retirement. In 1991, he was united in marriage
to Twyla Hesson at the Pla-Mor Bowl, Iowa Falls.
Bill is survived by his wife: Twyla Eighmey of Iowa Falls; his mother:
Barbara Eighmey of Iowa Falls, a daughter: Jessica Hesson of Iowa Falls,
a son Shawn Hesson of Iowa Falls, his maternal grandmother: Bessie
Mokosak of Waterloo, Iowa, three sisters: LouAnn Voshell and husband

DUMONT - Claire N. Stock, 79, of Dumont died at her home Friday, Jan.
16, 2004. Funeral services were in Hampton Monday, Jan. 19, at St.
Patrick's Catholic Church with Fr. Jim Miller officiating, with burial
in the Dumont Cemetery.
Claire was born Dec. 20, 1924, in San Francisco, Calif., to Francis and
Helen (Martin) Kavanaugh. She graduated from St. Peter's Catholic
Schools and received her nursing degree from St. Joseph College of
Nursing, both schools located in San Francisco. Claire received her
master's degree in nursing from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar
Falls. She served in the U.S. Navy. On June 4, 1947, Claire was united
in marriage to Dale Stock at Hampton. She was employed as a registered
nurse for 30 years at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, retiring
in 1986. Claire was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the
American Legion Auxiliary. She taught Catholicism, was a nursing
instructor at NIACC in Mason City, served as a 4-H leader and was on the
St. Francis Church Guild in Dumont.
Survivors include her husband, Dale of Dumont; one daughter, Deb Young
and husband Glen of Greeley; one son David and wife Jo of Parkersburg;
four grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Mary.

Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be
Thursday, Jan. 22, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora with Pastor
Bruce Zimmermann officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory
Garden in Eldora. Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 6-8 p.m.
at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.
Leona was born May 30, 1909, in rural Eldora to William and Anna (Steinfeldt)
Schwebke. She attended country school near Eldora and graduated from
Eldora High School as valedictorian of her class. On April 3, 1930,
Leona was united in marriage to Fred H. Daleske at Eldora. The couple
made their home near Eldora where they farmed and raised their family.
Leona was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was involved
with Mary's Mission Circle. She had volunteered with the Eldora Hospital
Auxiliary, and helped with the senior citizens' fellowship meals. She
was a member of the Hardin County 75-Year Club, and a rural neighborhood
club called the Kountry Klub. Leona enjoyed scrap booking, recording
family genealogy, ceramics, sewing and quilting.
Survivors include her daughter, Arlyn Hake and her husband Elvern "Bud"
of Radcliffe; one brother, William F. Schwebke of Radcliffe; four
grandchildren, Dion Hake and wife Lana, Corey Hake and wife Janita
"Sam", Chad Hake and wife Jill, and Cammy Kolterman and husband Shawn;
and nine great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Fred; her parents; one sister,
Margaret Schwebke; and two brothers, Donald Schwebke, and one in
infancy.

WELLSBURG - Minnie J. Schmidt, 93, of Wellsburg died Friday, Jan. 16,
2004, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Funeral services were
Monday, Jan. 19, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg with
Pastor Todd Rempke officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
Minnie was born July 11, 1910, in Grundy County to John and Kate (Harms)
Finke. She was raised near Wellsburg where she attended country school.
On March 21, 1938, she was united in marriage to George C. Schmidt. The
couple farmed southeast of Wellsburg. Minnie moved to Wellsburg in 1971,
where she lived for 30 years before moving to the Presbyterian Village
in 2002. She was member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Wellsburg and
later joined the Wellsburg Reformed Church where she taught Sunday
school. She enjoyed gardening, baking, playing cards and spending time
with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Tessau and husband Ray of
Wellsburg and Janice Koenen of Hampton; two sisters, Edna Meyer of
Holland and Carrian Muller of Humboldt; six grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents; four
sisters; three brothers; and a foster brother.

Meint was born March 22, 1923, in Aplington to Luppe and Theda (Wubbena)
Feikes. He attended rural Ackley schools. On Feb. 24, 1947, Meint was
united in marriage to Anna Koop at Ackley. He farmed and had been
employed by Krogh-Oppold as a service technician.
Survivors include one daughter Elaine Brannen and husband Harry of
Nevada; five grandsons, Ryan and Scott Meyer of Nevada, Harry Jr. and
wife Suzie of Pleasant Hill, and Travis and Kevin Brannen of Des Moines;
one granddaughter, Kristina Brannen of Indianola; two great-grandsons,
Colton and Kaleb Brannen of Pleasant Hill; three brothers, Henry, Fred
and Louie Feikes all of Ackley; one sister, Annie Oelmann of Iowa Falls;
and many nieces and nephews.

2004, at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Funeral services will be
Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in
Geneva. Burial will be in the Lindenwood Cemetery, rural Geneva.
Marjorie was born Sept. 3, 1922, near Owasa to Leo and Elsie (Welsh)
Williams. She attended Hickory Grove country school in Jackson Township
until the age of 11, at which time the family moved closer to Owasa.
Marjorie graduated from Owasa High School in 1940, and Ellsworth Junior
College in 1942. She taught fifth and sixth grade at Geneva Consolidated
School for two years. On June 4, 1944, Marjorie was united in marriage
to Glenn Wohlford. The couple made their home on a farm near Geneva.
Marjorie was an active member of the Geneva United Methodist Church. Her
life revolved around her family and the farm.
Survivors include one son Donald Wohlford and wife Barbara of Hampton;
two grandsons, Terry Wohlford and wife Kris and David Wohlford and wife
Jodi, all of Geneva; one brother, Arthur Williams of Geneva; two
great-granddaughters, Kennedy and Mallory Wohlford of Geneva; one step
grandson, Mark Rodgers and wife Kim of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two step
great-grandchildren, Brianna and Jayson Rodgers of Phoenix.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn; and one
brother, Richard Williams.

ELDORA - Marjorie Catherine Moore Janssen, 86, of Eldora died at her
home from natural causes on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, while under the
care of Hospice of North Iowa. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan.
21, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in
Eldora with Pastor Corey Larson officiating. Burial will follow at the
Eldora City Cemetery.
Marjorie was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Union to La Mont and Edna (Drake)
Moore. She graduated from Eldora High School in 1935. Marjorie then
worked as a secretary for Lundy and Butler Law Firm in Eldora. From
1939-1943 she lived in Des Moines and worked at Lundy Law Firm. On July
21, 1943, she was united in marriage to George E. Janssen at the First
Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora. She went to work for
the Army Civil Service and was in different parts of the country while
her husband was in World War II. After the war, they returned to Eldora.
After raising her children, she worked for the Hardin County Auditor's
Office and Hardin County Social Services. Marjorie was actively involved
in the First Congregational United Church of Christ for 60 years, PEO
for over 50 years, and the Girl Scouts and other community organizations
for many years. In later years, she collected clothes and made quilts
for children in the OSACS Shelter and program in Des Moines. Marjorie
always had a great love of art and art history and was a very creative
person whether making quilts, knitting, crafts or baking.
Survivors include her three children, Catherine of Portland, Ore., Henry
of Kirksville, Mo., Elizabeth of Vancouver, Wash.; four grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren; one sister, Alice Soballe of Medford, Ore.; and
one brother, Herbert F. Moore of Huxley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; and one
brother, Merwin Moore.

ALLISON - Randall D. Goddard, 47, of Allison died Wednesday, Jan. 21,
2004, a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Memorial

Randall was born Nov. 20, 1956, at Charles City to Ralph and LaVonne
(Duckworth) Goddard. He attended school in Charles City and graduated
high school in Waverly. Randall owned and operated Country Side Welding
in Allison until he went to work for Unverferth Manufacturing in Shell
Rock. He was affiliated with the New Hope United Methodist Church in
Dumont. Randall was a former member of the Dumont Lions Club and
belonged to the Blacksmith and Welding Association of Iowa. He enjoyed
renaissance activities, canoeing and playing paint ball with his
children.
Survivors include sons Jonathan of Waverly, Eric of Allison, and Chase
of Shell Rock; his parents Ralph and LaVonne Goddard of Mosinee, Wis.
He
was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

WILLIAMS - Virgil Oskvig, 82, of Williams died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at
Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Funeral services were Thursday, Jan.
22, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Williams, with Rev. Tom Hunt
officiating. Burial followed in the Radcliffe Cemetery.
Virgil was born March 24, 1921, to Ordin and Isabelle (Welland) Oskvig
on his family farm in Williams. He attended school in Williams and
farmed his entire live in the Williams area. Virgil enjoyed painting
horses.
He
is survived by two brothers, Melvin of Williams and Clarence of Alden; a
sister, Ora Hamre, of Iowa Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Beatryce
Duden, Bernice Ratzke and Alvina Porter; and two brothers, Elmer and
Ernest Oskvig.

PARKERSBURG - George J. Seehusen, 93, of Parkersburg died Monday, Jan.
19, 2004, at the Ackley Presbyterian Village. Funeral services were held
Friday, Jan. 23, at the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg with
Rev. Frank Pott officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery,
Parkersburg. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of
arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
George was born to John and Dena (Gelder) Seehusen on Oct. 28, 1910, in
Grundy County, near Buck Grove and Aplington. He received his education
from a rural school near his home. He worked on the family farm, (Buck
Grove and Fern areas) until he was old enough to travel to Minnesota to
become a hired hand and worked for various farmers there for room,
board, and a small salary. On Feb. 18, 1937, George was united in
marriage with Katie DeVries at the parsonage of the Pleasant Valley
Reformed Church, Holland. They made their home and farmed in Grundy and
Butler counties. In 1959 they moved from the farm to a home in
Parkersburg. George began working at the Waterloo Register Company,
where he enjoyed various factory jobs until 1971. Following his
retirement, he worked part time for Palmers Grocery Store. For years he
and his wife were custodians at the Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg,
where they were charter members. George served on the Consistory and was
on church committees at various times throughout its establishment and
development. After the death of his first wife, George married Marian
Abbas on July 5, 1980, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made
their home in Parkersburg and he became a member of the Christian
Reformed Church. George enjoyed woodworking, traveling with Marian and
gardening.
George is survived by his wife, Marian Seehusen of Ackley Presbyterian
Village; one son, Roger and wife Sharon of Parkersburg; four daughters,
Darlene and husband Darwin Nicklaus of Parkersburg, Arvilla and husband
Gary Irwin of Janesville, Marlys and husband David Fisher of Hubbard,
and Cathy and Daryl Myers of Parkersburg; 12 grandchildren; 15
great-grandchildren; one stepson, Ron and wife Marlene Abbas of Maurice;
two stepdaughters, Vickie and husband George Streich of Delano, Minn.,
and Sharon and husband Roger Seehusen of Parkersburg; six step
grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; one brother, Dick of
Grundy Center; and one brother-in-law, Clarence Muller of Reinbeck.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Seehusen; a great-grandson,
Daran Cordes; his parents; one brother, John; three sisters, Grace
Rewerts, Bertha Henze and Annie Muller.

ELDORA - Russell F. Pierson, 83, of rural Eldora died at his home on
Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004. Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the
First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock with Pastor Bruce Baillie
officiating. Cremation followed the funeral services and burial of his
cremated remains will be Thursday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. at the Steamboat
Rock Cemetery.
Russell was born Jan. 14, 1921, in Steamboat Rock to John and Rena
(Harms) Pierson. He moved with his family to his present residence north
of Eldora in 1934, where he farmed his entire working life. He graduated
from Eldora High School in 1938. On Feb. 24, 1946, he was united in
marriage to Clara E. Mason at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Russell
was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock and was
actively involved with the Steamboat Rock Boat Club. He had a love for
the land and enjoyed writing letters corresponding with family and
friends and tracing the genealogy and history of his family and
community.
Survivors include two sons, Tom Pierson and wife Linda of West Liberty
and Jerry Pierson and wife Sandra of Arlington, Texas; one brother, John
of Eldora; a sister-in-law, Lucille Pierson of Steamboat Rock; a
brother-in-law, Herb Mason of Fort Dodge; six grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; special friend and companion, LaRita Rose of
Steamboat Rock; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding his in death was his wife, Clara; his parents,; and one
brother, Helge.

ELDORA - Jane Chaplin Newhall, 81, of Eldora died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004,
at the Colonial Manor, Zearing. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan.
28, at 2 p.m. at the Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel with burial
at Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Jane Evelyn was born April 18, 1922, at Alden the daughter of Hobart and
Hilka (Tjarks) Duncan. She attended country school south of Alden. On
Nov. 1, 1946, she married Harry Virgil Chaplin Jr. at Webster City.
Harry died in 1986. She was united in marriage to Robert Newhall on July
11, 1990, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. He died in 2000. Jane was
employed at Iowa Falls Community Schools for 28 years as a cook for the
West Side Grade School, retiring in 1986. She also did wedding cakes
from her home for many years. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church,
Radcliffe, and a charter member of the Women of the Moose No. 1108, Iowa
Falls.
Survivors include two sons, Virgil Chaplin of Eldora and Michael Chaplin
and wife Marsha of Garden City; one stepson, Richard Newhall, and wife
Susan of Dunkerton; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a
sister Elenore and husband Herman Morgan of Lawrence, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a son, Mervin;
a granddaughter Sheena Chaplin; three brothers James Duncan, Frank
Duncan and Hobard Duncan Jr.; and one stepdaughter, Cathlene Smith.

ELDORA - Murl C. Schumacher, 89, of Eldora died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004,
at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Following cremation,
memorial services will be Thursday, Jan. 29, at 1:30 p.m. at the First
Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora with Pastor Corey
Larson officiating. Burial will occur at a later date. There will be no
evening visitation. Memorials may be directed to the First
Congregational United Church of Christ.
Murl was born Dec. 8, 1914, in Remsen to William C. and Minnie (Grothaus)
Schumacher. The family moved to Eldora in 1916, where he attended school
and worked in his father's grocery store. On Dec. 1, 1935, Murl was
united in marriage to Helen Speers at her father's home in Eldora. Murl
entered the U.S. Army, serving his country during WWII in 1943, and was
stationed at Fort Knox, Ken., and Worm, Germany. In May 1946, he
returned to Eldora and purchased his father's store. The store closed in
1960, at which time Murl became the manager of the Pine Lake Country
Club until 1963. He later was employed by the Eldora Hospital as food
service manager until his retirement in 1976. Murl was a member of the
Rotary Club and the First Congregational United Church of Christ, where
he served as a trustee. He enjoyed classical music, weather predictions,
short wave radios and cooking.
Survivors include his wife, Helen of Eldora; one daughter, Jane Ann
Bachman of Altoona; one granddaughter, Lisa Marie Heffelfinger and
husband Jeff of Altoona; and two great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Hollie
Heffelfinger.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; one great-granddaughter, Lindsay
Heffelfinger; one sister, Jean Guynn; and one brother, Joe Schumacher.

Wanda Arnold

WILLIAMS - Wanda Arnold, 79, of Williams died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004,
at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Private family interment
services will be held at a later date at Garden Grove. A memorial
service for friends and family will be held in the near future.
Memorials may be directed to F. D. Arnold, 3076 220th St., Williams, IA
50271 or to the Israel Family Hospice House, 400 South Dakota, Ames, IA
50014, in her name.
Wanda was born July 27, 1924, at Aurora, Neb., to Magnus and Amelia
(Anderson) Nelsen. She completed her formal education in Audubon. On May
30, 1944, she was united in marriage to F. D. Arnold in Las Vegas, Nev.
The couple made their home in several Iowa communities and owned
businesses in Stanhope and Kamrar. They retired to the Alden community
and have resided in Williams for the past two years. Wanda was employed
as a desk clerk at the Boondocks Motel. Wanda enjoyed cooking and
baking, with kringla and cinnamon rolls being the family favorites. She
also liked to read, crochet and go camping. She was a member of the VFW
and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, F. D. (Dick) Arnold; two daughters,
Marsha Roland and husband Jim of Alden and Linda Arnold of Danville,
Ind.; one son, Dick Arnold and wife Toni of Foristell, Mo.; seven
grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joan Stout and
Coralee Vega, both of San Jacinto, Calif.; one brother, Maynard Nelson
of Wichita, Kan.; and a sister-in-law, Daleth Wulf of Exira.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, LaVerne Nelson;
and two grandchildren.
Arrangements were made with Foster Funeral Home and Cremation Services
in Webster City.

Milton Schwinger

HUBBARD - Milton Schwinger, 87, of Hubbard died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004,
at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services were
Monday, Jan. 26, at Salem United Methodist Church in Hubbard with Rev.
Ron Ridgway officiating. Military honors were provided by the Walter-Sayer
Legion Post No. 182 and the VFW Post No. 3974 of Eldora. Interment was
in the Eldora Cemetery in Eldora.
Milton Schwinger was born Aug. 31, 1916, to Henry and Lillian May (Grobe)
Schwinger on their farm near Radcliffe. He attended country school at
Tipton No. 4, Hubbard. Milton entered the U.S. Army on Jan. 27, 1942,
and returned home in October 1945. On Dec. 18, 1945, he was united in
marriage to LuElla Ziesman. They made their home on a farm near Hubbard
then to a farm near Eldora. He and LuElla operated the Schwinger Mum
Garden for several years while farming 160 acres. They moved to Eldora
in 1976. In January 1998, they made their home at the Valley View
Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora. Milton later resided at the
Stratford Nursing and Rehab Center. He was a member of the Salem United
Methodist Church of Hubbard. Milton was a 4-H leader for many years.
Survivors include son Larry and wife Jolene of Stuart; one grandson,
John Henry Schwinger of Stuart; one sister, Kathryn Nassen of Des
Moines; one brother, Myron and wife Beulah Schwinger of Hubbard; and
nieces and nephews.
Milton was preceded in death by his wife, LuElla; his parents; and two
brothers, Wallace Schwinger and Carroll Nassen.
Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard was in charge of arrangements.

MUSCATINE - Delys, "Dee," Coleman, 77, of Muscatine, formerly of Iowa
Falls, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at the Riverbend Nursing and Rehab,
Muscatine. Memorial services will be Thursday, Jan. 29, at 10 a.m. at
Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel. Private burial will be at a
later date.
Delys "Dee" was born Feb. 23, 1926, at Iowa Falls to Granville E. and
Dorothy E. [Musel] Bremer. She attended Iowa Falls Community Schools
graduating with the class of 1944. She was united in marriage to John
Coleman in 1946. He passed away at age 42 due to complications of
diabetes. Dee had been employed as a secretary in Chicago, Ill., and Des
Moines and later retired to Iowa Falls to be near her mother. She was a
member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a son, Michael and wife Alyce of Gurnee, Ill.; one
grandson John Brennan and wife Tracy of Mundelein, Ill.; and two
great-grandchildren Graham and Hanna Brennan of Mundelein.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Dennis Coleman; and
one sister, Lurene Griffiths.

CITY WEST, Ariz. - Russell George Bennett, 87, of Sun City West, Ariz.,
died of a heart attack Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004. Memorial services will be
Sunday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m. at the Stardust Bible Church, 14811 West R. H.
Johnson Blvd., Sun City West, AZ 85375. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be
sent in his name to a special Music Memorial Fund at the Stardust Bible
Church.
Russ was born July 13, 1916, in Iowa Falls to Robert and Maude (Stotser)
Bennett. He lived much of his life in Twin Falls, Idaho, where he was
employed as one of the original salesmen of Gem State Paper and Supply.
On Aug. 25, 1940, he married Avis Hutson of Webster City. They were
active in the First Baptist Church of Twin Falls, where he directed the
church choir for many years. He served the church in many ways including
being an active part of the choir. Because music was an important part
of his life, Russ was choir director and enjoyed barbershop quartet and
chorus singing. He often sang with his two sons in church choirs.
Survivors include his wife, Avis; a son, Rev. Larry Bennett and wife
Mischael of Sun City West; a daughter-in-law, Joy Bennett of Phoenix,
Ariz.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous
nephews and nieces including Betty Kness of Iowa Falls.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Avonelle Watson and
husband William, and a son, Rev. Russell Bennett.

HAMPTON - Anna Elizabeth Freese, 92, of Hampton, formerly of Dumont,
died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Franklin General Hospital Nursing
Facility in Hampton. Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 29, at
10:30 a.m. at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev.
Terra Amundson officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday,
Jan. 28, from 4 - 6 p.m. at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont.
Anna was born Feb. 23, 1911, at Witty, Mo., to Daniel A. and Clara M.
(Young) Hearn. She graduated from Bristow High School in Bristow. On
Dec. 23, 1933, Anna was united in marriage to Carl J. Freese in Allison.
She was a homemaker. Anna was a member of New Hope United Methodist
Church and the Methodist Ladies Aid. Crocheting, doing word finds,
camping and traveling were among her favorite activities, in addition to
spending time with her family.
Survivors include three daughters, Louise Buseman and husband Norman of
Dumont, Nadine Popinga and husband Allan of Hampton and Carolyn Dodd and
husband Dan of Iowa Falls; one sister, Erma McDonald of Hampton; 11
grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, five brothers; five
sisters; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

Harvard, Ill., died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at the Scenic Manor Nursing

p.m. at Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, with the family receiving

Cordie was born April 23, 1924, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., to Ernest and
Amelia (Lipka) Kroll. She graduated from Lincoln High School in
Wisconsin Rapids in 1942. On Sept. 4, 1945, she was united in marriage
to Robert Joosten. The couple later divorced. Cordie was employed by
Harvard Hospital in Harvard as a certified nursing assistant.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Joosten and Jacqueline McNeal,
both of Iowa Falls, and Diane Joosten Simek and husband Brian of
Marengo, Ill.; three sons, Robert and wife Erin of Harvard, Timothy and
wife Debby and Philip all of Marengo; 12 grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; one brother, Ernest Kroll of Wisconsin Rapids; and
three sisters, Susan Scheiderer of Renton, Wash., Barbara Brundidge of
Nekoosa, Wis., and Alice Janz of Wisconsin Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Marion Schraeder,
Gretchen Smolarek, Ruth Bathke and Lois Staffon; and a brother, James
Kroll.

CLARION - David Knuths, 50, of Hull, formerly of Clarion, died Thursday,
Jan. 22, 2004, at the Hope Haven Northside Court in Hull. Funeral
services were Monday, Jan. 26, at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in
Clarion with Pastor Janet Wearda officiating. Burial was in the Galt
Cemetery.
David was born Sept. 18, 1953, in Clarion to Dale and May Bell
(Jacobson) Knuths. He was raised and educated in Clarion and graduated
from Eagle Grove High School. David lived at home for a while and moved
to Woodward where he attended Woodward College. He has lived in Hope
Haven, Rock Rapids, Webster City, Fort Dodge, Nora Springs and settling
in Hope Haven Northside Court in Hull. David enjoyed coming home for
family gatherings, bowling and pizza parties. He was an avid football
fan, with his favorite team being the Minnesota Vikings. He was also
involved in the Special Olympics, competing in bowling.
Survivors include his brother, Alan, of Pocahontas; two sisters, Alice
Retleff and husband Larry of Rowan and Carol Madden and husband Robert
of Livingston, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; sister-in-law,
Sharon Knuths; and two nephews.

IOWA FALLS - Kermit VanBuren Smith, 87, of Iowa Falls died Sunday, Jan.

Kermit was born May 30, 1916, at Goodell to Matthew and Mable (Bachman)
Smith. He graduated from the Klemme High School in 1934. Kermit served
with the U.S. Army from April 3, 1942, to June 22, 1945. He served in
the European Theatre, earning three bronze stars in the Normandy,
Northern France, and German campaigns, and two purple hearts during the
Northern France campaign. On May 26, 1948, he was united in marriage to
Esther Mae Ghoske at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls.
Kermit was very mechanically inclined and had been employed by Johnson
Motors, Ralston Purina Mills and Ellsworth Community College, all in
Iowa Falls. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the
Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188, Iowa Falls.
Survivors include his wife, Esther, of Iowa Falls; a son, Wayne Smith of
Iowa Falls; a granddaughter, Sarah Smith of Murphysboro, Ill.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; a son, Harley Smith; a brother, Marvin
Smith; a sister, Charlott Smith; and one half-sister, Ruth Smith.
Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
