Hubbard
Youth Killed in Wednesday Morning Crash
A rural Hubbard
teen was killed on Wednesday, January 29, when the
vehicle he was driving slid through an intersection
and was struck by a semi tractor-trailer. Austin
Dean Wiechmann, 15, Hubbard, was pronounced dead at
the scene from injuries suffered in the two-vehicle
accident. The accident occurred shortly before 8:30
a.m. on Wednesday, at the intersection of U.S. Hwy.
65 and county gravel road, 280th St., one-half mile
south of Hubbard.
According to the
Iowa State Patrol, Wiechmann was eastbound on 280th
St. and was unable to stop at the stop sign due to
icy conditions on the gravel road. The 1991 Chevy
Suburban Wiechmann was operating was struck by a
1995 Freightliner semi tractor-trailer operated by
David Blackburn, 43, of Shell Rock. Evidence at the
scene showed that the semi attempted to stop to
avoid the accident, but was unable to avoid the
collision.
According to the
ISP, the semi struck the left front side of the
Wiechmann vehicle. The semi jackknifed, landing
perpendicular on the roadway with the back wheels
off the east side of the highway. Wiechmann's
vehicle was thrown backward and landed in the west
ditch on its top. The driver was partially ejected.
The weather
conditions were cloudy and the pavement on the
highway was described as dry at the time of the
accident. The Chevy Suburban was totaled and the
Freightliner semi sustained $10,000 damage.
The ISP was
assisted at the scene by the Hardin County Sheriff's
Office, the South Hardin County Emergency Squad,
Hubbard Fire Department and Hubbard Ambulance
service.
The traffic
fatality is the second in Hardin County this year.
Austin Wiechmann
may not have been well known by many of the students
at the Hubbard-Radcliffe High School, but he was a
good student and was well liked. The H-R freshman
was in his first year in the school system after
being home schooled through the eighth grade. He had
only been taking classes here for a semester,
beginning his freshman year here after being
instructed at home.
He was a good kid.
A good student; well mannered and well like, H-R
Principal Allyn Monaghan reported Wednesday. Austin
was a member of the H-R football team this past
fall.
Students received
news of the accident shortly after classes began
Wednesday morning. We have brought in counselors
from Area Education Agency 6, local pastors from
area churches, as well as our school guidance
counselor, school nurse and staff. We are making
sure kids are getting the attention they need,
Monaghan said Wednesday.
Funeral services
for Austin Wiechmann are pending at the Boeke
Funeral Home in Hubbard.
