Arthur Zidlicky

Memorial services for Arthur M. Zidlicky of Spillville were held on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in Decorah, IA with Rev. Kim Smith officiating.

Organist was Paul Bruvold and soloist was Don DiLaura singing "In the Garden", and "On Eagle's Wings". Congregational hymns were "Borning Cry" and "How Great Thou Art". Honorary pallbearers were Art's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Inurnment was in Washington Prairie Cemetery in Decorah, IA with military rites at the graveside by Helof-Holm VFW Post #1977, Bernatz-Symods Am. Legion Post #163, and Hamre-Giesen DAV Chapter #8 Am. Vets #96.

Arthur, 82, died Sunday, August 21, 2005 at his home following a long illness.

Arthur Melvin Zidlicky was born on March 27, 1923 to John and Marie (Lomica) Zidlicky on a farm near Saratoga, Iowa. Art attended rural schools near Lime Springs and graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1941. While in high school, he played basketball and football. He then farmed with his father for a short time.

Art married Gatriel Mardel Thompson on April 23, 1944 in Chester, Iowa. Art then served during World War II in the Philippines and Japan; he served in the infantry and was a cook. After the service, Art worked for Armstrong Truck from Chester, IA and farmed.

They moved to Nevada, Iowa and farmed before returning to the Lime Springs area in 1949. They farmed near Bonaire and Cresco and then moved to Decorah in 1969. He farmed prior to opening Zid's Feed & Supply and was a DeLaval Dealer. Art retired and moved to Spillville, Iowa in 1989.

Art enjoyed coon hunting and ice fishing with his grandchildren. He liked dairy farming; flower gardening, cooking and playing Santa Claus. Art was an avid sports fan and always enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren while they participated in sports, especially wrestling. Art enjoyed sharing Norwegian jokes with everyone. Art was a member of the VFW and the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church.

Art's survivors include his wife, Gatriel "Gay" Zidlicky of Spillville, IA; one daughter: Mary (Ron) Oyloe of Decorah, IA; five sons: Gary Zidlicky and friend Nancy Elsbernd of Decorah, IA, Dennis (Donna) Zidlicky of Decorah, IA, Dave (Bonnie) Zidlicky of Ridgeway, IA, John (Joan) Zidlicky of Calmar, IA and Alan Zidlicky and friend Bill Torrey of Phoenix, AZ; 15 grandchildren: Dean Zidlicky, Don (Karrie) Zidlicky, Lisa (Tony) Myers; Mike Zidlicky; Travis, John & Christopher Zidlicky; Derek and Jason Oyloe; Brandi, Michelle, Kari, Jaclyn, Sondra and Sarah Zidlicky; four great- grandchildren: Colin, Carter, Cody and Dalton; four sisters-in-law: Palma Zidlicky of Decorah, IA, Laura Zidlicky of Morton, IL, Beth Sheeley of Coralville, IA and Donna Hanson of LeRoy, MN; two brothers-in-law: Milt Obermeier of Charles City, IA and Dean (LaVonne) Thompson of Riceville, IA; a special family friend, LaVonne Keune of Cresco, IA; and two special friends: Kevin and Allyssa Anderson.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers: John and Paul Zidlicky; one sister: Orpha Obermeier; one grandson: Matthew Oyloe; and one nephew: Paul Zidlicky, Jr.


Norbert Wilson

Funeral services for Norbert R. Wilson of Atwater, CA were held on Saturday, July 9, 2005 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church at Atwater, CA with Pastor Ruclare Pauling officiating.

Vickie Sample was organist. Merced County V.F.W. Honor Guard conducted military honors.

Norbert, 69, died Thursday, July 7, 2005 at his home.

Norbert Ray Wilson was born June 13, 1936 on the family farm south of Cresco, the son of Gilbert and Eleanor (Leferink) Wilson. He attended rural New Oregon #2 school and attended Cresco High School in Cresco. He entered the U.S. Air Force where he served 28 years of duty.

Norbert married Beverly A. Mohrhauser in Cresco, IA. They have three sons: Raymond A. Wilson of Freemont, CA, Robert A. Wilson of Arlington, WA, and Ronald A. Wilson of Dayton Beach, PA; one brother: Gordon (Ruby) Wilson of Cedar Rapids; two sisters: Margaret (Robert Bronner of Cresco) and Maureen (George Hunt of Cedar Rapids), and nephews and nieces.

Norbert was preceded in death by his parents: Gilbert and Eleanor Wilson; and two brothers: Donald and Gerald Wilson.


Sylvia Shileny

Funeral services for Sylvia A. Shileny of Spillville will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, August 31 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville.

Funeral services for Eugene L. Anderson, 72, of Emmetsburg were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg.

Carol Ward

Funeral services for Carol Ward were held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, September 9, 2005 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with Pastor Todd Yeaton officiating.

Suzanne Ollendick accompanied Marcia Murray who sang "Rock of Ages" and "Because He Lives". Pallbearers were: Dean and Jason Miller, Dave Hruska and Jon Hayek. Interment was Oaklawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Carol, 76, died Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at St. Marks Nursing Home in Austin, MN from complications of cancer.

Carol Jean Ward was born on February 16, 1929 at Spencer, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd, Sr. and Myrtle (Warren) Solomon. Her family moved to Howard County in 1930. Carol attended school in Cresco and graduated from Cresco High School in 1946, and then entered nurses training at Kirksville, MO.

On March 2, 1954, Carol married James Ward in Kirksville, MO. Due to James being in the Air Force, they lived in various places - Kirksville, MO, Kansas City, MO, Japan, and Del Rio, TX. Carol and Jim were later divorced and Carol moved back to Cresco to make her home.

In early years, Carol was a nurse at the Evans Memorial Home. Carol was the Health Program Coordinator for Howard County for Northeast Iowa Community Action for 25 plus years. She was in charge of the local programs of Family Planning and W.I.C. She also worked at the Cresco Public Library for several years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, a Sunday School Teacher and served on various boards.

Her hobbies throughout the years included: being a sharp shooter with a pistol while in Texas. In later years Carol loved to sew, bake and do some crafts. She loved spending time with her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. Carol was a good friend and great support to many people over the years and will be missed by all.

She is survived by two daughters: Deborah Lamoreaux of LaCrosse, WI and Bobbi Potter (James "Tolly" Tollefson) of Austin, MN; seven grandchildren: Jamie (Cari) Hoppe and Jason Hoppe (Alcia Aller), Elizabeth and Kimberly Lamoreaux, Chris, Chuck and Carl Ward; five great-grandchildren: Ethan and Alexis Hoppe, Harley Hoppe, Clayton and Alexis Ward; two special friends: Taylor and Katelyn Tollefson; one brother: Wayne Solomon and one sister in law: Eleanor Solomon.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; two sons: James Howard Ward in infancy and David Carl Ward in 1993; one brother: Lloyd Solomon; and a sister-in-law: Edith Solomon.


LaVene Roberts

Funeral services for LaVene Roberts of Decorah, Iowa were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2005 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

The organist was Karen Holthaus and the Cantor was Cindy Schissel singing "Here I Am, Lord", "One Bread, One Body", "Candle in the Wind", "The Lord's Prayer", and "Let There Be Peace on Earth". Lector was Sharon Lukes and Offertory Gifts were carried by Benita and Dennis. Eucharistic Minister was Mary Pat Johanningmeier. A Memorial Tribute was given by Kelli Nava. Ushers were Mark and Bonnie Hackman and Gary and Bev Rustad. Interment was in St. Benedict's Catholic Cemetery in Decorah, Iowa.

LaVene, 62, died Friday, September 2, 2005 at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah, Iowa following a courageous battle with cancer. LaVene donated her body for research at Mayo Hospital in Rochester, MN.

LaVene Marie (Hoppe) Roberts was born on January 1, 1943 the daughter of Kermit and Ellen (Halweg) Hoppe in Cresco, Iowa. LaVene graduated from Cresco High School in 1961.

She married Wayne Roberts on December 1, 1962 at Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco, Iowa. LaVene worked at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home as the Activities Director, as a receptionist for Dr. A.B. Ludeking and as a Certified Nurses Aid at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility.

LaVene was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church and St. Mark's Circle.

LaVene enjoyed golfing, bowling and playing cards, but most of all, she loved her family.

LaVene's survivors include her husband, Wayne Roberts, Decorah, IA; one son: Dennis (Susy) Roberts of Rosemount, MN; one daughter: Benita (Kevin) Schemionek of Farmington, MN; five grandchildren: Danielle and Jessica Moore and Dylan, Kylie and Zoey Roberts; two brothers: Earl (Joan) Hoppe of Lime Springs, IA and Eugene (Linda) Hoppe of St. Paul, MN; two sisters: Lorrine (Roger) Wentworth of Cresco, IA and LaVonne (Kenneth) Fishell of Orlando, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

LaVene was preceded in death by her parents; one sister: Rita Hoppe on Sept. 29, 2003; and two brothers in infancy: Alvin and Vern Dale Hoppe.


Roy Pleggenkuhle

Funeral services for Roy J. Pleggenkuhle of Fredericks- burg were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 13 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church-Richfield, rural Sumner.

Interment was in Richfield Cemtery.

Walter Hove

Funeral services for Walter Hove of Waterloo, formally of Ridgeway, IA will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway with Pastors Phillip and Ginny Olson officiating.

The organist will be Judy Hovden. Honorary pallbearers are: Lisa Meaney, Lori Tigges, Carmie Johnson, JoDee Johnson, Lydell Hove, Gary Hove, Charlie Miller, and Earl Albertson. Pallbearers are: Matt and Andy Johnson, Phil Meaney, Bob Tigges, John Hove and Larry Kuennen. Interment will be in Lincoln Lutheran Cemetery

Visitation was held on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco and at the church an hour prior to services today, Wednesday.

Walter, 86, died Sunday, September 18, 2005 at Ravenwood Nursing Home of congestive heart failure.

Walter Earl Hove was born on May 1, 1919, south of Ridgeway, IA, the youngest of four sons of John Elmer and Alma (Rue) Hove. At the age of two, the family moved to the current Hove farm south of Ridgeway. Walter was baptized on May 25, 1919 and confirmed on June 3, 1934 at Lincoln Lutheran Church. Walter attended country school and graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1938. He then attended LaCrosse Business College in LaCrosse, WI.

Walter entered into the U.S. Army in September 1942 and served with an Anti-Aircraft Division in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He returned home from WWII on New Year's Day 1946.

On January 29, 1947 he married Helen Barthelme in Cresco, IA. They lived and farmed on Walter's home place for 50 years.

Walter became a director/agent of Norwegian Mutual Insurance Association in Decorah, IA in 1947. In 1962 he became secretary/treasurer and manager, until his retirement in 1981. Walter remained on the board of directors until 2002, serving 55 years. He served on the parish council and the cemetery board for Lincoln Church and Peace Church. He was instrumental in the planning of Peace Church.

Walter enjoyed horses, woodworking and waltzing at the Inwood Ballroom with his wife, Helen. But his greatest pride was in his children. grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by two daughters: Dianne (Dave) Hopperstad of Waterloo and Donna (Bob) Johnson of Urbandale, IA; four grandchildren: Lisa (Phil) Meaney of Cedar Rapids, Matt (Carmie) Johnson of Urbandale, Lori (Bob) Tigges of West Des Moines, Andy (JoDee) Johnson of Urbandale; 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen who died in December 1996; his parents; and three brothers: Amos, Oran, and Norman.


Alice Ernst

Funeral services for Alice Ernst were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 20 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Clifford Kjos

Funeral services for Clifford J. Kjos of Cresco IA, formally of Ridgeway, IA were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at Madison Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway with Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

The organist and soloist was Judy Hovden singing "Softly and Tenderly." Congre-gational hymns sung were "Rock of Ages," "What A Friend We Have in Jesus," and "Lord, Dismiss Us With Your Blessing." Pallbearers were his seven grandchildren: Clint Campbell, Drew Campbell, Alicia Watson, Nathan Galloway, Adam Abbott, Nicholas Abbott, and Misty Abbott. Interment was in Madison Lutheran Cemetery in rural Ridgeway.

Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah handled the arrangements.

Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at the church.

Clifford, 90, died Sunday, September 11, 2005 at the Cresco Care Center of congestive heart failure.

Clifford Julian Kjos was born October 2, 1914 on the home farm in Madison Township, Winneshiek County, IA, the son of Julian Filip and Clara Helene (Anderson) Kjos. He was baptized on October 25, 1914 and confirmed on May 26, 1929 at Madison Lutheran Church. He attended rural school in Madison Township.

He was united in marriage with Charlotte Hahn on May 13, 1945 in the Houston Lutheran Church in Houston, MN. To this union four children were born: Cheryl, Linda, Carlton and Rhonda.

Clifford remained on the family farm and enjoyed farming all of his working life. He was particularly fond of his childhood pony, Tony, and his dairy cows. In his later years he enjoyed tractor driving and helping his son, Carlton, continue the farming operation. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren were very important to him. He really enjoyed seeing Carlton's dogs on the farm.

Clifford and Charlotte became residents of the Cresco Care Center in Cresco, IA, on July 1, 2004.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte of Cresco; his children: Cheryl (Craig) Campbell of Rochester, MN, Linda (Bruce) Galloway of Rochester, MN, Carlton (Cyndy) Kjos of Decorah, IA, and Rhonda (Doug) Abbott of Rochester, MN; seven grandchildren: Clint and Drew Campbell, Alicia (Seth) Watson and Nathan Galloway, Adam Abbott (US Navy), Nicholas Abbott and Misty Abbott; one sister, Ruby Grafwallner of Colorado Springs, CO; one sister-in-law, Carola Kjos of Milwaukee, WI; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Milton, Spencer, and twins, Reuben and Rudolph, in infancy; and one sister, Mae Lunz.

Betty Sexton

Funeral services for Betty L. Sexton were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 26, 2005 at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Marion with Father Keith Burch officiating.

Immediately following Mass a luncheon was served at the church.

A celebration of Betty's life was held from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion where a vigil service began at 6:30 p.m.

Graveside services were held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday at St. Bridget's Cemetery in Bluffton.

Betty, 77, died Thursday, September 22, 2005 at her home, following a 10-year courageous battle with cancer.

Betty Lou Sexton was born February 10, 1928, the daughter of Albert "Ab" and Della (Scheidelmantal) Hauber in Decorah.

On October 27, 1947, she married Robert C. Sexton at St. Agnes Church (Plymouth Rock). He died January 6, 1985.

Betty was a homemaker then worked at Turner Microphone for 22 years and Red Lobster for 16 years from which she retired.

She grew up on a farm outside of Kendallville. She always had an open door and loved to spend time with her grandchildren, family and friends, and always enjoyed lots of laughter. Betty made "name doilies" for friends and family for weddings, babies and many other special occasions.

Betty is survived by her children: Michael Sexton of Cedar Rapids, Colleen Marie Sexton (Ron Rouse) of Grand Junction, CO, and Robert "Bobby" Sexton of West Hollywood, CA; four sisters: June Ryan, Rose Ryan, Marion Haskovec, and Norma Jean Smith and husband Gaylord; four grandchildren: Misty, Michael Joseph, Ryan, and Rachel; four great-grandchildren; and specal friends: Lois "Loie" Verdow, Gloria Larson, Joanie Boyse, and all her neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Robert; her parents: Albert "Ab" and Della; her step mother: Alice; two brothers: Gerald and George; and a sister: Rita.


George Marhoul

Funeral services for George F. Marhoul of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 23, 2005 at Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco, IA with Rev. Richard J. Ament officiating.

His family placed the pall on the casket at the entrance of the church, lector was Jessi Hughes, gifts were carried by Skyler and Shania Lewison, Ashley Blumer and Rachel Russell. Honorary pallbearers were: Ron Kreitzer, Denis H. Reicks, Ed Martinek, and Wayne Stapelkamp. Pallbearers were: Jessi Hughes, Steve Hughes, Caleb Schnitzler, Joey Dawley, Luke Schnitzler, Jarrod Dawley, and Jacob Schnitzler. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.

George, 75, died Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI.

George Frank Marhoul was born June 7, 1930 at Gridley, Kansas, the son of Joseph and Julia (Vlk) Marhoul. George attended school in Gridley until 1941 when his family moved to northeast Iowa and he finished his education in Ridgeway, Iowa. Following his schooling, George stayed at home to help with the farming.

On May 20, 1957, George was united in marriage to Loretta Houdek at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. To this union six children were born, Gary, Susan, Linda, Thomas, Kathy, and Julie. They made their home on a farm outside of Cresco, then moved to a farm outside of Ridgeway. George worked road construction while living on the farm. They later moved into Ridgeway. Loretta died June 17, 1983.

On November 16, 1985, George was united in marriage to Juliet Albertson Schnitzler at Cresco. They lived in Ridgeway after their marriage, and they moved to Protivin in 1996. About one and one half years later they moved into Cresco.

George enjoyed listening to old time music, watching football and basketball, but especially enjoyed going fishing with his grandson. He was an exemplary father and grandfather and could not spend enough time with his family.

George is survived by his wife: Juliet of Cresco, six children: Gary Marhoul (Pat Clark) of Menomonie, WI, Susan (Randy) Russell of Ridgeway, IA, Linda Lacey of Fountain, MN, Thomas (Barb) Marhoul of Ridgeway, IA, Kathy (John) Blumer of Long Grove, IA, and Julie (Jeff) Lewison of Rochester, MN; four step children: Janice Prochaska of Iowa City, IA, Larry (Susan) Schnitzler of Egan, MN, Gary (Cindy) Schnitzler of Decorah, IA, and Edith (Mark) Dawley of Decorah, IA; 11 grandchildren: Steve and Jessica Hughes, Rachel Russell, Noah Lacey, Ashley and Kori Blumer, Skyler and Shania Lewison, Marquetta, Heather and Fannie Clark; nine step grandchildren: Jolonda and Julie Parrett, Jacob and Luke Schnitzler, Catina, Caleb and Heidi Schnitzler, Joey and Jarrod Dawley; 16 step great grandchildren: Alex, Gabriella, Trevor, Amanda, Matthew, Brett, Lucas, Collin, Allysa, Amanda, Kevin, Kaitlyn, Hannah, Garrett, Brady, and Chandler.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Loretta, one brother: Joseph Marhoul and one sister: Helen Pecinovsky.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Nancy, 74, died Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.


Waldon Piehn

Waldon E. Piehn, 92, of Harmony, MN died Monday, September 19, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

According with Wally's wishes, he was cremated and a private memorial service will be held with his family.


Alice Ernst

Funeral services for Alice C. Ernst, formerly of Cresco were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 20 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Alice, 101, died Saturday, September 17, 2005 at the Stillwater Good Samaritan Center in Stillwater, MN.


Brandon Kleve

Funeral services for Brandon L. Kleve of Waucoma were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 27 at the Waucoma American Legion Post #189.

Interment was in Waucoma Cemetery.

Adelaide Dykstra

Memorial services for Adelaide T. Dykstra were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2005 at Central Lutheran Church, 2702 Rockefeller Avenue, Everett, WA.

Viewing was from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 10 at Purdy Walters with Cassidy.

Adelaide died Wednesday, September 7, 2005 in Everett.

Adelaide Theressa Dykstra was born in Cresco, Iowa on August 7, 1917 the daughter of Agnes and Theodore Anderson. She was the oldest of six children. She graduated from Iowa State Teacher's College in 1941, and continued her passion for teaching mathematics at Everett High School until retiring in 1982.

Adelaide married Jerry Dykstra on June 10, 1944 in Waukegan, IL. In 1952, they moved to Everett, with their two children, John and Mary Jane. Adelaide and Jerry recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

Her faith was very strong and the church was a very important part of her life. She was an active member of Central Lutheran Church for more than 50 years. Her dedication to the Altar Guild and other aspects of the church were greatly appreciated.

Adelaide is survived by her loving husband, Jerry, at the family home. His constant love and devotion to her were obvious to all who know the family. Other survivors include son: Dr. John (Kelly) Dykstra of Lake Stevens; daughter: Mary Jane (Dan) Hahn of Randle, WA; granddaughter: Emily; grandson: Kevin; step-granddaughters: Kelsey (Greg) and Kara; sister: Sylvia Lynch of Wisconsin; brother: Erlin (Marilyn) Anderson of Iowa; and brother: David (Lois) Anderson of Arizona; also numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister: Karen Leas; and brother: Charles Anderson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany of the Northwest, the Adelaide Dykstra Mathematics Scholarship Fund c/o Everett Rotary, or Central Lutheran Church.
