Calvin Zimmer, Jr.

Memorial services for Calvin "Buddy" Zimmer of Concord, NC will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 16 at the Franciscan Skemp Hospital Chapel, 2nd Floor in La Crosse, WI.

Calvin, 35, died Sunday, March 20, 2005 at his home in Concord, NC.

Calvin John Zimmer, Jr. was born April 29, 1969 in La Crosse, WI, the son of Calvin Zimmer, Sr. and Shirley (Chitek) Weibel.

As an avid fisherman, he frequently spoke of time spent at Cresco's area fishing holes.

He is survived by his mother: Shirley Weibel of St. Charles, MN; and three sisters: Dawn Zimmer Sunblade of Indian Trail, NC, Eva Zimmer Ebner of Sabetha, KS, and Rosemary Zimmer Lambert of China Grove, NC.

Calvin was preceded in death by his father Calvin Zimmer, Sr.; and his step-father Robert Chitek.


Ruth Wells

Funeral services for Ruth Wells of Riceville were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 1 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville with the Rev. Gary Gilbert officiating.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Ruth, 99, died Monday, March 28, 2005 at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Ruth R. Wells was born February 27, 1906 east of Riceville, the daughter of John and Ida (Reynolds) Fellows. She attended local school and graduated from Riceville High School in 1926. Ruth taught school for many years at the Round Grove School.

On September 28, 1929, she married Aaron Hadley Wells. They farmed the family farm for many years.

Ruth was a member of the First Baptist Church of Riceville. She loved gardening and animals.

She is survived by one son: Howard of Riceville.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Aaron in 1958; her parents; and six brothers: Howard, Robert, David, James, Franklin, and Lloyd.


Duane Mattheis

Funeral services for Duane Mattheis of Cresco were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Interment was in Oaklawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Duane, 87, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Duane Loren Mattheis was born November 15, 1917 in Anita, the son of Clarence and Edith (Parker) Mattheis. He attended elementary and high school in Anita and graduated in 1935. He then joined the army in 1941, spent four years in the European Theatre, landed on Omaha Beach, fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and married Christine Beck in 1945. To this union five children were born. They farmed in the Estherville and Emmetsburg area for a number of years, then moved to Cresco in 1959 to pursue farming. During the years of farming in the Cresco area he was president of the Howard County N.F.O. He also held offices in community and church organizations including congregational deacon. His wife Christine passed away in 1979. He married Mildred Fuller in 1985.

He employed numerous people for farm help over the years.

He is survived by his wife Mildren of Des Moines; three children: Coleen Busta of Cresco, Richard of Waynesville, MO, and Lynn of Aurelia; 12 grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Dorothy Ross of San Diego, CA and Donna Wallace of Des Moines.

Duane was preceded in death by his first wife Christine; his oldest son: Denis; youngest son Steve; his parents; and two brothers: Dean and Dwight.


Dorothy Herold

Funeral services for Dorothy Herold were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Msgr. Donald Heineman officiating.

Interment will take place later in the New Oregon Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were: Doug Herold, Dean Herold, John Herold, Justin Herold, Nathan Hanson, and Mitchell Hanson. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Dorothy, 84, died Sunday, March 27, 2005 at the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, MN.

Dorothy Eleanor Herold was born July 27, 1920 in New Oregon Township, Howard County, the daughter of Edward Charles and Mary Ann (Crawford) Wheeler. She attended a rural school near her home. During WWII, she lived in Cedar Rapids and worked in a factory. After the war, she returned to Cresco.

On May 3, 1952, she married Dorrence Herold.

Dorothy was a full time homemaker. In her younger years, she liked to garden, loved to go fishing and spend time in the outdoors. In later years, she like to work crossword puzzles and read.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, its Rosary Society and the American Legion Auxiliary and the Birthday Club.

She is survived by her children: Debra Hanson of Mazeppa, MN, Douglas of Chatfield, MN, and Dean of Cresco; eight grandchildren; two sisters: Wilma Schorr and Mary Ellen Wheeler, both of Cresco; and one brother: Paul of Lime Springs.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Dorrence; her parents; five sisters: Hazel Prochaska, Marvel Wentworth, Violet Wentworth, Winifred Nelson, and Lucille Wheeler; and two brothers: William and Edward.


Carl Pleggenkuhle

Funeral services for Carl Pleggenkuhle will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6 at Becker-Milnes Funeral Chapel in Hawkeye with Rev. William Horn officiating.

Carl, 75, died Saturday, April 2, 2005 at the Center for Long Term Care in Polk City after a short illness.

Carl Henry Pleggenkuhle was born October 18, 1929 on the family farm near Hawkeye, the son of Lee and Effie (Clapper) Pleggenkuhle. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. He attended Hawkeye High School. He served with the United States Air Force from 1949 until 1952. Carl owned and operated a gas station and garage in Fredericksburg and a gas station in Cresco for several years. He worked for several Chevrolet dealerships and was the office manager for a trucking company in Cresco before his retirement.

Carl was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye and attended a Lutheran church in Polk City. He was active with the El Kahir Shrine in Cedar Rapids, and the American Legion in Cresco.

Carl enjoyed playing cribbage, cards, playing the bass guitar, and rides in the country.

He is survived by his wife Sharon of Polk City; six children: Christie Shever of Cresco, Lynn Wilkens and Susan Anderson of Fredericksburg, Theresa Chipera of Cresco, Terri Becker of Long Prairie, MN, and Kirk of Mingo; nine stepchildren: Rebecca Lewis of Colfax, Vickie Grube of Cresco, Barb Roach of Fort Collins, CO, Sue Ann Ferrie of Cresco, Lou Ann Linderbaum of Ridgeway, Sharon Greene of Sauk Center, MN, Andy Ford of Arkansas, Jamie Warren of Huxley, and Kari Nacin of Roland; 30 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and three sisters: Lois Schlatter of Gulf Breeze, FL, Ruth Knox of Clermont and Ida Duffy of Waukon.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents and one stepson: Joel Ford.

Leota Lubbert

Funeral services for Leota Malydia Lubbert of Riceville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 14 at the St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church in rural Elma with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Riceville.

Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville on Wednesday during the hours of 3:00-7:00 p.m. and one hour before services at the church.

Leota, 97, died Monday, April 11, 2005 at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Leota was born on November 5, 1907 in Elma, IA to Fred and Emily (Anderlik) Lauck. She attended local schools. Leota was united in marriage to Louis H. Lubbert on November 23, 1926 at St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and enjoyed cooking, baking, flower gardening, playing cards with friends and spending holidays and special occasions with her family.

Survivors include her daughter: Marlys Grete and her husand Gary of Muscatine, IA; a daughter-in-law: Joanne Lubbert of Waterloo, IA; five grandchildren: Diane Peters, Laurie Lubbert, Connie Lubbert, Kathy Grete, and Cheryl Geurts; and eight great-granchildren: Jenny Schaldecker, Alison Lubbert, Michelle Lubbert, Adrienne Lubbert, Madison Geurts, Collin Geurts, Andrew Geurts, and Sarah Pliner; and a sister: Gladys Bartels of Waterloo.

Leota was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Louis in 1981; two sons: Kenneth in 1996 and Merlin in 2004; and two sisters: Viola Miller and Leona Arndt.


Alice Hyke

Funeral services for Alice Hyke were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 11 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with burial in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery.

Rev. Msgr. John W. Hemann officiated, lector was Ray Colony, gifts were carried by the grandchildren, Sr. Millie Leuenberger O.S.F. was Eucharistic Minister, Theresa Burke played the organ and accompanied the choir and congregation in singing, "Prayer to St. Francis" "Be Not Afraid," and "On Eagles' Wings". Casket bearers were: Mick Long, Dan Davis, James Long, Roy O'Bryne, Doug Ingersoll and Roger Fisher.

Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Alice, 88, died Thursday, April 7, 2005 at the Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Alice Idabelle Beaston was born on September 16, 1916, near Davies, NE, to Ada Blanche (Meador) and Willian George Beaston. The Beaston family moved to Iowa before settling in Illinois. Alice was the eldest of the family of 11.

On August 20, 1935, Alice was united in marriage to William John Hyke at Northwood, IA. To this union was born one daughter, Marion Ann (Hyke) Samec. Alice and Bill moved throughout Iowa, settling in Waterloo upon retirement from farming in 1964.

Alice was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who thoroughly enjoyed her family and friends.

Alice's survivors are her daughter and son-in-law: Marion and Frank R. Samec; grandson: Frank William Samec of North Liberty; granddaughter and grandson-in-law: Deborah Sue and Raymond L. Colony of North Liberty; one great-grandson: William Austin Colony; sisters: Edna V. Buchholz of Mt. Carroll, IL, Ada K. Frye of Waterloo, IA, Elsie J. Lawson of Savanna, IL, Carol R. Ingersoll of Savanna, IL; brothers: Harold R. Beaston of Arkansas and Lawrence Beaston of California; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, William John Hyke on Ocotber 8, 1991; her parents: William G. and Ada B. Beaston; sisters: Alta Fisher and Wilma Beaston; brothers: Dean Beaston, and Kenneth Beaston.


Geraldine Pecinovsky

A Mass of Christian Burial was held for Geraldine "Jerry" Pecinovsky at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Cresco, IA.

Rev. Msgr. Stanley J. Hayek officiated. The pall was placed by the family at the beginning of the Mass, Carol Foley read the lessons, the gifts were carried by David and Virginia Pecinovsky, Carol Foley was Eucharistic Minister, honorary bearers were Sue Downey, Linda Rose, Carol Foley, JoAnn Peterson and Ron Pecinovsky; casket bearers were: Mike Pesky, Mike Foley, Chris Lentz, David Pecinovsky, Dave and Sally Hruska. Marilyn Novak was organist playing "Be Not Afraid", "Amazing Grace," "Hosea", and "How Great Thou Art," as Joe Wacha lead the congregation in song.

Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Geraldine, 84, died Saturday, April 9, 2005 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco, IA.

Geraldine M. Pecinovsky was born on February 21, 1921 in Cresco, IA, the daughter of Frank and Louisa (Svestka) Pecinovsky. She attended school through the eighth grade at St. Joseph's Grade School. Following her education, she stayed at home and helped her brother on the farm until after he returned from World War II. She then went to California and worked at L.E.R.C. as a cafeteria worker. She later worked decorating dinnerware and then went to work for Hughes Aircraft as an electronic assembler. She returned to Cresco in the late 1980's.

Jerry was a member of St. Joseph's Church, and was a friendly, outgoing individual. She would do things for others requesting nothing in return. Jerry enjoyed the outdoors and loved animals. She fed the birds, cats and dogs, and even made pets of the wild squirrels. She had names for all of them. Jerry loved to fish and could be found along the creek many times during the summer.

She is survived by one sister: Elizabeth Durfey of Cresco; four nieces and three nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by her parents; one sister: Emma Simmons; and four brothers: Edward, Adolph, Arthur and Donald Pecinovsky.


Daryl Hovey

Funeral services for Daryl L. Hovey of rural Lime Springs were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 8 at Saetersdal Lutheran Church in rural Harmony, MN.

Interment was in Saetersdal Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Harmony. Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony, MN handled the arrangements.

Daryl, 52, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, MN.


Judith Vagts

Funeral services for Judith Ann Vagts of rural Harmony, MN were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Granger, MN.

Interment was in St. Matthew's Cemetery in Granger.

Visitation was held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 11 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony, MN.

Judith, 61, died Friday, April 8, 2005 at her residence in rural Harmony.


Albert Lee

Funeral services for Albert B. Lee of Riceville were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12 at the Saratoga Presbyterian Church in Saratoga.

Interment was in Saratoga Cemetery in Saratoga.

Visitation was held on Monday, April 11 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville.

Albert, 91, died Sunday, April 10, 2005 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco


Stanley Holt

Funeral services for Stanley Holt of rural Lawler were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 at the Saude Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Lawler with Pastor Kent Dethlefsen presiding.

Mary Dethlefsen was organist and those in attendance sang "In Jesus' Name", "I Fall Asleep In Jesus' Wounds", "On My Heart Imprint Thine Image" and "Jesus, Thy Blood And Righteousness".

Burial was in the church cemetery with Matthew and Joseph Holt and Rick, Gary, Thad and Eli Johnson serving as casket bearers.

Friends were to call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton and an hour prior to services at the church.

Stanley, 79, died Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at his home.

Stanley Phillip Holt was born March 8, 1926, on a farm near Lake Mills, IA, the son of Edwin and Lottie (Levorson) Holt. He graduated from Dr. Martin Luther High School in New Ulm, MN, Northwestern College in Watertown, WI, and Bethany Lutheran Theological Seminary in Mankato, MN. He served as a pastor in various congregations including the Saude and Jerico Evangelical Lutheran Churches from 1958 to 1960. At that time he also taught in the Jerico Grade School.

He was married to Lorraine Johnson July 20, 1958 at the Saude Evangelical Lutheran Church. In the early 1960's he became employed by the State of Iowa as a social worker, a position he held until his retirement. After retirement he and Lorraine moved back to the Saude community where they have resided the last 15 years.

Stanley is survived by his wife Lorraine; five children: Nathan (Leslie) Holt of St. Paul, MN, William (Lisa Marie) Holt of Mankato, MN, Myron (Lisa Jo) Holt of Cresco, Susan Conrad of Waterloo and Douglas (Donna) Holt of Mankato; 12 grandchildren: Matthew, Angela, Rachel, Derek, Abby, Justin and Hannah Holt, Shannon and Emily Conrad and Kristy, Laurie and Nicole Hottinger; two great-grandchildren: Bennett Combs and Devin Adams; a sister Elsie (Lloyd) Juve of Cottage Grove, WI; three brothers: Reuben (Virginia) Holt of Lake Mills, Arnold (Elaine) Holt of Daytona Beach, FL and Joel (Marvel) Holt of Earlville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Michael Conrad and two brothers: Hartwick Holt and a brother in infancy.


Glenna Hastings

Funeral services for Glenna M. Hastings of Elma were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 8 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma with Monsignor John Hemann officiating.

Burial was in the Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Lourdes, IA with Jack Hastings, Dan Hastings, Mike Hastings, Bruce Hastings, Mark Hastings, Chad Hastings, and Jamie Hastings serving as casket bearers.

Friends were to call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma where there was a 7:00 p.m. scripture service. Visitation was also an hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Glenna, 81, died Monday, April 4, 2005 at the Colonial Manor in Elma.

Glenna Mae Hastings was born September 13, 1923, at Little Cedar, IA the daughter of Fred and Verna (Graves) Hill. She was a graduate of Little Cedar High School. During high school she played on the basketball team. Glenna was later united in marriage to Robert Hastings. The couple farmed near McIntire and moved to a farm east of Elma in 1952. Glenna was a school bus drier for 28 years for the New Hampton School district and worked at Sara Lee. Declining health forced her retirement. Glenna became a resident of the Colonial Manor in Elma in June 2002. Glenna was a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Church and the rosary society.

She enjoyed shopping, going to farm sales, and gardening.

Glenna is survived by five sons: Jack (Betty Jo) Hastings of Alta Vista, IA, Dan Hastings of Waterloo, IA, Mike Hastings of Elma, IA, Bruce (Joyce) Hastings of Lawler, IA, and Mark Hastings of Elma, IA; daughter-in-law Susan Hastings of New Hampton; a step sister Virginia (Forrest) Ellison of Osage, IA; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son: Gary Hastings; granddaughter: Jonalie Gorman; half brother: Fred Lyle Hill; two step brothers: Marian and Charles Young.


Anna Chambers

A Mass of Christian Burial was held for Anna M. "Sis" Chambers of Federal Way, WA, formerly of Elma at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 9 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Monsignor John Hemann celebrating the mass.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Elma.

Friends were to call from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church.

Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma handled the arrangements.

Anna, 93, died Sunday, April 3, 2005.

Anna M. Chambers was born March 17, 1912 on a farm southwest of Elma, the daughter of John and Ella (Biwer) Palmersheim. She grew up in Howard and Chickasaw Counties and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Elma in 1930. She married in 1940. The couple moved to a farm in the Alta Vista area, then to Charles City and Austin, MN. During this time their four children were born.

Anna settled with her children and parents in Elma, IA in 1945. She enjoyed visiting with her children after they had grown and moved to Federal Way, WA in 1987 to be closer to her youngest grandchildren. She has resided in Federal Way for the last 17 years. She spent her remaining years traveling spending time with friends and family and enjoying life.

Anna is survived by her four children: MaryAnn (Marlowe) Bennett of Rochester, MN, Betty (Johnny) Palmer of Slayton, MN, John (Sharon) Chambers of Wausaukee, WI, and Tom (Karen) Chambers of Federal Way, WA; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granchildren; and sister-in-law: Vi Palmersheim of New Hampton.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers: Matt Palmersheim and his wife Delores and Joe Palmersheim.


David Alcock

Funeral services for David J. Alcock of Decorah were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at the Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. James Glesne, Rev. Bryan Robertson, and Rev. Allen Vik officiating.

Remembrance given by Jim Zajicek. Organist was Kathy Murray and soloist was Teresa Procter, "How Great Thou Art". Congregational hymns were "A Mighty Fortress is Our God", "I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry", "This is My Father's World". Recessional, "Come to Jesus" by Chris Rice. Pallbearers were: Chip Joecken, Jon Hamborg, Tom Joecken, Michael Huinker, Bruce Christopher, and Andrew P. Nelson. Interment was in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, on Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Fjelstul Funeral Home, and after 1:00 p.m. at the church.

Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah handled the arrangements.

David, 46, died unexpectedly on Sunday, April 3, 2005 at his home in Decorah of a sudden illness.

David Joe Alcock was born August 21, 1958 in Waterloo, IA, the son of Leland and Thelma (Hemingson) Alcock. He graduated from Tripoli High School in Tripoli, Iowa with the class of 1976. Dave earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Industrial Technology at the University of Northern Iowa in December 1979 after three and one half years of study. He attended UNI on a full tuition scholarship and was the 1980 recipient of a distinguished Purple and Old Gold Award in the College of Natural Sciences. Dave earned a Master of Science Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1986.

Dave began his career teaching high school and junior high industrial arts and assisted coaching varsity level sports in the Bondurant-Farrar Schools in Bondurant, IA from 1980-1984. He taught high school computer science and coached seventh grade basketball and eighth grade football in the Norwalk Community Schools in Norwalk, Iowa from 1985-1990. From 1991-2004, Dave was the Information Technology Director for the Howard-Winneshiek School District in Cresco, Iowa. In July 2004, he began work as the Manager of Technology for the Decorah Community Schools. Dave also worked as a Technology Consultant for Northern Trails Area Education Agency in Clear Lake, Iowa from 1984-1985 and 1990-1991.

Dave and his wife, Shery, have three children: Matt, Emily, and Rebecca. Dave's family was very important to him. He was a loving husband, devoted father and loyal son and brother. He loved to spend time with his children and enjoyed teaching them all the things they would need to know to live life to the fullest. Dave loved the outdoors and many of the activities associated with being in natural surroundings and had a particular passion for canoeing in the Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and Sherry loved camping in their RV with their children - spending time together around the campfire, hiking and biking.

Dave was gifted with many talents and shared his expertise of computing with many neighbors and friends. Dave had a wonderful personality and was well respected and admired by those who knew him. He was very capable with his hands and was able to build just about anything.

Dave was an active member of Decorah Lutheran Church - ushering, serving on the church council and helping the congregation in many other ways. He was also a willing volunteer for many school and community activities.

Survivors include his wife Sherry of Decorah; his son: Matt Alcock; his two daughters: Emily and Rebecca Alcock, all of Decorah; his parents: Leland and Thelma Alcock of Waverly, IA; a sister: Bonnie (Ray) Joecken of Waverly, IA; two brothers: Al (Cathy) Alcock of Mason City, IA and Rick (Sue) Alcock of Oskaloosa, IA; his mother-in-law and father-in-law: Beverly and Grant Larson of Rochester, MN; three brothers-in-law: Barry (Pat) Braun of Littleton, CO, Ron (Darlene) Braun of Moorhead, MN, Rod (Nance) Braun of Rochester, MN; three sisters-in-law: Sandy (Mark) Steck of Canton, SD, Sharon (Bill) Wefring of Eden Prairie, MN, and Peggy (Pete) Ellefsen of Indianapolis, IN; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Mary Smith

Funeral services for Mary E. Smith of Mabel, MN were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 15 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Canton, MN with Father Donald P. Schmitz officiating.

Interment was in the Calvary Cemetery in Canton.

Visitation was held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services at the church. The Rosary was recited at 9:30 a.m.

Mary, 96, died Monday, April 11, 2005 at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel, MN.

Mary was born March 30, 1909 in Howard County, Iowa to James and Mary (Puffer) Adamec. She attended parochial school in Protivin, Iowa. She married Charles Humpal on November 21, 1927. They lived in the Granger and Cresco areas and had three children: Irene, Dorothy, and Donald. Charles later died on July 24, 1942 and her son, Donald, died on March 24, 1964. On March 4, 1957 she married Harry Smith at St. Columban Catholic Church in Preston. They had also lived in the Lanesboro, Preston, and Canton areas. She has been a resident at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel since October, 2001.

She was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church in Canton.

Mary is survived by two daughters: Irene Aarre of Preston, MN and Dorothy (Keith) Roffman of Postville, IA; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands Charles Humpal and Harold Smith; a son: Donald; her parents; a brother; and a sister-in-law.


Elsie Ratcliff

Funeral services for Elsie Ratcliff of Santa Ana, CA were held on Saturday, April 2 at McMillan & McCormick Gardena Chapel in Gardena, CA.

Graveside services will be held in June at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Elsie, 89, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at the Royale Health Care Center in Santa Ana.

Les Turner

Funeral services for Les Turner of Harmony, MN were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 16 at the Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church in Canton, MN.

Visitation was held at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony, MN from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday evening, and one hour prior to services at the church. Interment was in Henry on the Hill Cemetery in rural Canton, MN.

Les, 46, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005 in eastern Wisconsin due to a motor vehicle accident.

Leslie Arthur Turner was born on March 7, 1959 to Dale and Mildred (Russell) Turner in Harmony, MN. He graduated from Harmony High School in 1978. Throughout his life, Les worked at various jobs, but mainly as a farmer and truck driver, currently working for CO2 in Fargo, ND.

In June of 1984, he married Karen Helgeson, to this union two sons were born. They later divorced. Then on September 13, 1997 he married Lisa O'Connor.

He was a life-long member and church elder for the Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church in Canton.

Les enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his motorcycle, and farming. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife Lisa, two sons: Cole of Canton, MN and Corbin at home in Harmony, MN; three step children: Bryant, Scott, and Bridget; his father: Dale of Harmony, MN; two brothers: Larry (Pat) Turner Of Rochester, MN, Loren Turner of Arizona City, AZ; three sisters: Linda Gutzke of Minneapolis, MN, Leanne Turner of Rochester, MN, and Cindy (Jerry) Rieser of Rochester, MN; several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles, along with special friends, Marilyn and Ilot Soland.

He was preceded in death by his mother: Mildred; brother: Lynn Dale; and his grandparents.


Jerome Skretta

Funeral services for Jerome Skretta of West Union were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 15 at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union.

Interment was in St. John's Cemetery in Fort Atkinson.

Walter Shores

A Mass of Christian Burial for Walter J. Shores of Protivin was held at 11:00 on Monday, April 25 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. John Moser officiating.

The pall was placed by Walter's six children. Marlene Pecinovsky was the organist for the service. Interment was in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin with Jean Brase, Carolyn Miller, Connie Mracek, Mike Spalla, Andrea Sever and Jon Tupy as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Sarah Porter, Chad Miller, Suzanne and Rob Wheeler and Andy Sever.

Visitation was held from 2:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday at Hugeback's Protivin Funeral Home where there was a 3:00 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary and a 5:30 p.m. Scripture Service. Walter, 85, died Thursday, April 21, 2005 at his home.

Walter was born September 21, 1919, on the family farm south of Protivin, the son of Louis and Mary (Chyle) Shores. He graduated from the Maynard High School.

On November 20, 1941, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Hampton he was united in marriage to Irene H. Leuenberger. To this union six children were born. The couple farmed south of Protivin for many years and Walter was also an adjuster with the Federal Crop Insurance Program. On July 1, 1994, his wife Irene died. Walter moved to his current home in Protivin at that time.

Walter was a member of Holy Trinity Church for 63 years. He also was a Knights of Columbus and Catholic Workmen member. Walter enjoyed farming, gardening, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Walter is survived by two sons: Dale Shores of Protivin and Mark (Lora) Shores of Protivin; four daughters: Judy (Leon) Tupy of Boulder, CO, Mary Lou (Robert) Hartl of New Berlin, WI, Nancy (Tom) Spalla of Dubuque and Betty (Alan) Patten of Waverly; two brothers: Louis (Irene) Shores of Protivin and Milo Shores of Ft. Atkinson; seven grandchildren: Jon Tupy and fianc/ Miriam, Suzanne (Rob) Wheeler, Andrea (Andy) Sever, Carolyn (Chad) Miller, Mike Spalla and fianc/ Nettie, Nicholas Shores and Lily Shores.

He was preceded in death by his wife Irene on July 1, 1994; his parents; three sisters: Mary Shores, Lillian Whitney and Ella Kinkor; and one brother: Charlie Shores.


Elmer Hirsch

Burial services for Elmer H. Hirsch, formerly of Lime Springs and Granger will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 29 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.

Elmer died Tuesday, January 11, 2005.


Earl Henry

A Mass of Christian Burial for Earl J. Henry of Cresco was held on Friday, April 15 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with interment in St. Bridget's Cemetery at Bluffton.

Rev. Msgr. Stanley H. Hayek officiated with the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco assisting with arrangements. The family placed the pall at the entrance of the church and proceeded into church singing "Allelulia, Sing to Jesus", Shirley Bronner read the readings and Susan Hall, Jim and John Henry carried the gifts to the Altar. During the preparation of the gifts, the song "Gift of Finest Wheat" was sung. While Msgr. Hayek, Lisa Henry, Michelle Henry and David Hall gave bread and wine to those receiving, the song "On Eagle's Wings" was sung. During the commendation, the Celtic "Song of Farewell" was sung. The recessional song was "The Strife is O'er". Suzanne Ollendick played the organ and accompanied Katie Ferrie who was the soloist and cantor. Honorary casket bearers were: Jerome Kingsley, Paul Gossman, Clem Kofron, Charles Wilhelm, Gene Daley and Everett Schacht. Casket bearers were: David Henry, Vince Gehling, George Schmitt, Joseph Henry, Dave Brenno and Greg Murphy.

Earl, 70, died unexpectedly, Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Earl Joseph Henry, the son of James Patrick and Dorothy (McCauley) Henry, was born at the hospital in Decorah, Iowa on June 17, 1934. Earl was raised on the family farm in Burr Oak Township where he attended the rural school. He graduated from Canton High School in 1953. Earl attended Iowa State University where he studied animal science and participated in the Men's Glee Club. Following college, Earl returned home to farm with his two brothers raising livestock and various crops.

On August 14, 1965, he was united in marriage to Patricia McBride at St. Augustine Church in Austin, MN. To this union, three children were born: Susan, James, and John. In 1973, the family moved into Cresco, while Earl continued to drive 15 miles to the Bluffton area to work on the farm each day.

Earl was involved in many community activities. He was a member of Council #1571 of the Knights of Columbus and Fourth Degree member of the Davis Assembly of the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Farm Bureau Board of Directors in both Howard and Winneshiek Counties. Earl worked part-time at the Sale Barn in Cresco in his later years. He was a lector, commentator, and usher at Notre Dame Parishes. Earl performed in several productions in the Cresco Community Theater. He spent many hours visiting residents at the Howard County Residential Care facility. He was also a regular volunteer at the concession stands in the community. Earl enjoyed the county and state fairs. Dancing and playing 500 with his friends in the card club was also a favorite activity over the years.

Earl was a loving father and husband and very proud of his family. He loved to attend his children's school events, band concerts, basketball games, and theater performances. In recent years, he spent many happy times with his three grandchildren.

Earl is survived by his wife Patricia of 39 years; three children: David and Susan (Henry) Hall of Fridley, MN, Jim and Michelle Henry of Turlock, CA, and John and Lisa Henry of Waterloo, IA; three grandchildren: Riley and Emily Henry and Liam Hall; two brothers: Jerome Henry of Canton, MN and Duane Henry and Marilyn Bjornson of Decorah, IA.

Earl was preceded in death by his father: James, mother: Dorothy and infant brother: Eldon.


George Hauber

Mass of Christian Burial for George Hauber of Cresco was held at 11:00 on Tuesday, April 26 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center, with interment in Calvary Cemetery, both in Cresco.

Rev. Donald J Hawes celebrated the mass.

Visitation was held at the Conway Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday and at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of services. There was a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The family placed the pall at the entrance of the church, Allison Ruby, Lara Ness, Tricia Raap and Beth Sheehy were lectors, gifts were carried by Kate and Nolan Sheldon. Honorary bearers were: Anthony "Sonny" Slifka, Kevin McCabe, Terry McCabe, Alan McCabe, Rodney Koliha, Richard Koliha, Elias Zweibahmer, and Clarence Steffen; casket bearers were: Dan Sheldon, Andrew Ruby, David Ness, Chad Raap, Richard Haskovec, Larry McCabe and Greg McCabe.

George, 87, died Saturday, April 23, 2005 at the Cresco Care Center where he has lived since December of 2003.

George Andrew Hauber was born on July 22, 1917 in Winneshiek County, Iowa, near Calmar, the son of Albert and Adella (Scheidel) Hauber. He attended the rural school near his home through the eighth grade. Following his education, he stayed on the farm to help his father farm.

On November 14, 1950, George was united in marriage to Emma M. Slifka at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco. Following their marriage, they farmed in Vernon Springs for a year and then moved to Ridgeway for about five years and finally moved to his home farm in Winneshiek County where they retired in 1979 and lived until they moved into Cresco in 1996.

George was a member of St. Joseph's Church, the Farm Bureau, and served on the boards of the Winneshiek County Dairy Association, Pork and Beef Producers, and was a director of the Winneshiek County Extension Society. He was also a member of the Cresco Council #1571 of the Knights of Columbus.

George enjoyed fishing, and playing euchre. He enjoyed visiting with everyone he came in contact with. He was especially fond of his family, and loved to have his grandchildren and great-grandchildren come to visit.

George is survived by his three children: Barb Hauber of Kasson, MN, Chris (Scott) Sheldon of Sidney, IA and Rosi Hauber of Lafayette, CO; six grandchildren: Lara Ness, Tricia Raap, Andrew and Allison Ruby, Dan and Kate Sheldon; four great-grandsons: Trae Riniker, Jared Ness, Logan Ness, and Nolan Sheldon; five sisters: June Ryan of Cresco, IA, Rose Ryan of Cedar Falls, IA, Marian Haskovec of Cresco, IA, Betty Sexton of Marion, IA, and Norma Smith of Huntington, W.VA; nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Emma on May 24, 2001; a daughter: Diane Mary; one brother: Gerald Hauber; and one sister: Rita McCabe.


Lucille Buckendahl

Funeral services for Lucille A. Buckendahl of New Hampton were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 24 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Frederika.

Interment was in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Frederika.
