Funeral services for Harry Carpenter of Fredericksburg were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 30 at the Hillcrest Baptist & Brethren Church in Fredericksburg.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Fredericksburg.

Harry, 65, died Wednesday, April 27, 2005 at his home in Fredericksburg.

Ruth Duneman

Funeral services for Ruth Duneman of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 9 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Michael Massa officiating.

Inurnment will be held at a later date at New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Ruth, 85, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County, Cresco.

Ruth Arlene (Aberg) Duneman was born on January 30, 1920 near Chester, Iowa. She was the daughter of Martin and Julia (Citek) Aberg. Ruth was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She attended various Howard County Schools.

On November 28, 1939, she was united in marriage to Donald Duneman. They are the parents of four children, LaVonne Fitzgerald Frickson (deceased) Gary (Waverly, IA) Dennis (Albuquerque, NM), and Duane (Rushford, MN).

In 1942, Don and Ruth, with daughter LaVonne, left Iowa and moved to California where Don worked for one year. In 1943 they returned to Cresco, and for one year Don worked for Sovereign Dairy and Ruth was a housewife. The following year, Don and Ruth started farming and in 1948 moved to the Duneman farm that Don's father and grandfather had farmed for years. They farmed there until 1968 when they moved to Cresco where Don worked for the city. Ruth worked for the schools until her retirement in 1985.

Don and Ruth were avid dancers and card players. Ruth's life was centered on her family. Her greatest joy was being with her grandchildren.

Ruth is survived by her three sons, 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, and several siblings; Helen Kakac of Palm Springs, CA, Dorothy Woods of Tucson, AZ, Gladys Anderson of Sacramento, CA, Harold Aberg of Ripon, WI, Gerald Aberg of Perry, IA, Ronnie Aberg of North Hollywood, CA, and Donnie Aberg of Cresco, IA.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, siblings; Clarence and Eugene, and a sister in infancy.

The family wishes in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the family for a fund to be determined at a later date.

Funeral services for Elvin L. Torgerson will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 19 at the Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony, MN.

Interment will be in the Greenfield Cemetery in Harmony.

Walter Meier

A Mass of Christian Burial for Walter A. Meier of Elma was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 17 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Monsignor John Hemann celebrating the mass.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma handled the arrangements.

Walter, 85, died Thursday, May 12, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Walter Albert Meier was born January 2, 1920 on a farm near Alta Vista, the son of Frank and Veronica (Kanies) Meier. He attended St. Bernard Catholic School in Alta Vista. After his schooling, Walter farmed with his family.

On April 3, 1945, he was united in marriage to Shirley Schultz at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Following their marriage the couple farmed near Saratoga and raised their two daughters Sharon and Carol. Along with farming, Walter also was a Dekalb Seed Corn dealer, dehorned cattle for farmers in the surrounding area, sold Archer Oil, and SOI Beans. Shirley died November 22, 1972. After Shirley's death Walter continued farming. In December 1973 he married Gloria Sensor at the Little Brown Church in Nashua and the couple later renewed their vows at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. The couple continued to farm near Saratoga. Gloria died November 16, 1989. Walter was married to Mildred Peters on February 26, 1994 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma and the couple farmed near Saratoga. Walter was still currently farming.

He enjoyed gardening, reading, playing cards, being around people and dancing in his younger years. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma and the Catholic Order of Foresters St. Joseph Court #878 where he was a member for 65 years.

Walter is survived by his wife Mildred; two daughters Sharon (Larry) Kovarik of Riceville, IA, Carol (David) Kostohryz of Cresco, IA; four step children Larry Peters of Indianola, Marian Marvin of Marion, IA, Kenny Peters of Rochester, MN, and Rhonda Perkins of Excelsior, MN; six grandchildren Kim (Jeff) Rahlf of Elma, IA, Donald Jr. (Tina) Vrba of Dixon, MO, Debra (Chris) Ruff of Marion, IA, Dean (Molly) Vrba of Mt. Auburn, IA, Deanna (Jason) Dickenson of Cassville, MO, and Danny (Rachal) Vrba of Protivin, IA; eight great-grandchildren Cory Rahlf, Brandi Rahlf, Meghan Vrba, Jordyn Vrba, Isaac Vrba, Ian Vrba, Bradan Dickenson, and Andrew Dickenson; step granddaughter Chelsea Sensor; two brothers Harold (Rosalie) Meier of Elma, IA and Francis (Lois) Meier of Elma, IA; two sisters Agnes Hidding of Elma, IA and Angeline (John) Helmerick of Colorado; a sister-in-law Clemie Meier of Elma, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Shirley; wife Gloria; grandson Steven Kovarik; sister Rosalia Ptacek; and two brothers Jerome and Arnold Meier.


Wendal Liddle

Funeral services for Wendal Liddle of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 14 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton.

Interment was in the New Hampton City Cemetery in New Hampton.

Reuben Friedrich

Funeral services for Reuben G. Friedrich of Elma were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 16 at St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church, rural Elma with Pastor Dan Christensen officiating.

Interment was in St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Larry Friedrich, Lonnie Friedrich, Rodney Friedrich, Ron Brummond, Dan Donner, and Mike Paterson. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma handled the arrangements.

Reuben, 84, died Friday, May 13, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Reuben George Friedrich was born February 22, 1921, on a farm north of Elma, the son of Ernst W. & Alinda (Rimrodt) Friedrich. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church and graduated from the Elma High School in 1938. After his schooling, Reuben farmed with his family and served a term as the Howard County Treasurer. On April 20, 1952, he was united in marriage to Lois Helen Brummond at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elma. Following their marriage the couple farmed north of Elma. Reuben was a lifelong farmer retiring in 1995. Along with farming, Reuben also sold Archer Oil. Throughout the years he served on the Howard-Winneshiek Community School Board, Howard County Board of Review, Howard County Cattleman's Association, and the Howard County Equity Board of Directors. Reuben and his family enjoyed building a relationship with exchange student son Richard Knudsen from Denmark, who stayed with them during the 1976-77 school year. He was an active member of the St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church, where he held many offices. Reuben enjoyed being with family and friends, making new friendships and playing cards.

Reuben is survived by his wife of 53 years Lois, two sons Carl and Denise Friedrich of Lincolnshire, IL and Norman and Susan Friedrich of West Union, IA; a daughter Hope and Russell Grabau of Waterville, MN; a daughter-in-law Kathy Shaw of Riceville, IA; 14 grandchildren Curtis Friedrich, Leanne Friedrich, Mary Lynn Friedrich, Sarah Rose Friedrich, Carolyn Friedrich, Lora Joy Grabau, Zane Grabau, Lydia Grabau, Ezra Grabau, Ezekiel Grabau, Tristan Friedrich, Benjamin Friedrich, Ethan Friedrich, and Ellen Friedrich; a step grandson Nathan (Stacy) Shaw; a brother Orval (Arlene) Friedrich of Elma, IA; a sister-in-law Maxine Friedrich of Elma, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Harold (January 16, 1989), and a brother Loyd Friedrich (October 3, 1989).


Dorothy Christensen

Funeral services for Dorothy M. Christensen were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 13 at the Zion Lutheran Church in West Union.

Interment was in Windsor Cemetery in Hawkeye.

Dorothy, 72, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at her daughter's home near Randalia.

LaVon Cassidy

Funeral services for LaVon Cassidy of Lime Springs were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 17 at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs.

Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Lime Springs. Lindstrom Funeral Home in Lime Springs handled the arrangements.

LaVon, 86, died Friday, May 13, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

LaVon Augusta Cassidy was born on May 17, 1918 in Garrison, Iowa to Rev. Henry and Esther Raecker. As the daughter of an Evangelical United Brethren minister, LaVon lived in several Iowa communities as she grew up and graduated High School as valedictorian in Dumont, Iowa. LaVon received a B.A. in Music Education from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois in 1940 and taught vocal music for six years at schools in Hubbard, and Nashua. During her time in Nashua, LaVon was a frequent soloist for weddings at the Little Brown Church. She then entered nursing school at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids and received her R.N. in 1949. Shortly before graduating, she married Carl Bernard Cassidy on an icy January 1, 1949. To this union of 50 years, seven children were born: Ronald, Carla, Gregory, Andrew, Kent, Maureen, and Kathleen.

LaVon was a dedicated wife and mother. She partnered with her husband, Carl, in publishing the Lime Springs Herald and LeRoy Independent for many of his 62 years as an editor. LaVon loved her church, family and community.

She was a member of the Lime Springs United Methodist Church where she served as a soloist and choir director for over 40 years. LaVon spent many years as an officer for the local and district United Methodist Women, frequently traveling to Des Moines for state conference meetings.

LaVon enjoyed serving her community in a variety of organizations through the years. She was on the Lime Springs Library Board for many years through its development and building of new facilities. She served as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, the Howard County Public Health Advisory Board, and J.C. Club. In addition, she was an active Cub Scout and Boy Scout Mother and Crestwood High School Band Booster.

In her retirement years, she enjoyed being a grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved traveling throughout the country with her husband, Carl, to numerous WW II Army Air Corps reunions. They also made several vacation trips to Europe.

LaVon was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Esther Raecker, her husband Carl Cassidy, one daughter, Kathleen Cassidy, and one son, Ronald Cassidy.

She is survived by five children: Carla Cassidy of Lime Springs, IA, Gregory (Debbie) Cassidy of Liberal, KS, Andrew (Cathy) of Rolla, MO, Kent Cassidy of Wayzata, MN, and Maureen (David) Persinger of Gladstone, MO, one sister, Evelyn (Ventan) Yablonski of Naperville, IL, one brother, Richard (Shirley) Raecker of Waterloo, IA, one sister-in-law Agnes Harris of Spring Valley, CA, and several nieces and nephews. LaVon also leaves behind five grandsons: Timothy Cassidy of Emporia, KS, Carl Cassidy of Washington, Missouri, Christopher Cassidy of Searcy, AR, and Stephen and Ryan Persinger of Gladstone, Missouri, along with one great-granddaughter, Sierra Rose Cassidy of Washington, MO.

Joyce Johnson

Memorial services for Joyce T. Johnson of Eugene, OR, formally of the Harmony area, were held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 20 at the Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony, MN.

Betty Bodensteiner

A Mass of Resurrection for Betty E. Bodensteiner of rural Riceville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 26 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Ray. E. Atwood officiating.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Betty, 86, died Friday, May 20, 2005 at her home.

Betty Elizabeth Bodensteiner was born November 12, 1918 in Slater, IA, the daughter of Rollo and Merle (Hildreth) Petefish.

She was united in marriage to Christopher Bodensteiner on September 28, 1940 at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines, IA.

Survivors include: four sons: Chris S. and his wife Michelle of Loveland, CO; Thomas and his wife Donna of Clear Lake, IA; Paul and his fianc/e Jane Ray of Kansas City, KS; and James and his wife Deborah of Washington, IA; four daughters: Mary Laskowski of Spring, TX; Margaret and her husband Jerry Gaia of Arlington, TN; Sara and her husband William Hanlon of Tulsa, OK; and Ann and her husband Louis Blickenderfer of Charles City, IA; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers: Ray Petefish and his wife Geri of Ames, IA and Harold Petefish and his wife Louise of Dodge Center, IA; and a sister: Joan Robobsky of Marshalltown, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Christopher in 1997; two brothers: John and Charles Petefish; and one son-in-law: Leonard Laskowski.


Genevieve Jones

Funeral services for Genevieve M. Jones of Lime Springs were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18 at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs.

Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.

Genevieve, 87, died Saturday, May 14, 2005 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
