Jeff Schmitz

Funeral services for Jeff Schmitz of Festina were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2005 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina with Monsignor Cletus Hawes officiating.

Lector was Jerry Hewitt. Offertory was carried by Kelli and Curt Schmitz and Kelsey Andera. Organist was Annette Walter. Music was by Our Lady of Seven Dolors Choir singing "Be Not Afraid", "Amazing Grace", North Fayette Chamber Choir singing "Prayer of the Children", and "Ave Maria". Drummers were Kelli Schmitz, Amanda Gibson, Tiffany Garvin, Liz McDonough and Katie Schmitz. Pallbearers were: Derek Taylor, Adam Wilmes, T.J. Crandall, Matt Mitchell, Travis Soppe, Justin Shores, Mark Svenson, and Jeff McElvania. Interment was in Our Lady of Seven Dolors Cemetery in Festina. Special music at graveside was "Scotland the Brave". There was a time for fellowship and lunch at Goeken Park at the top of Eldorado hill after the graveside services. Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Calmar handled the arrangements.

Jeff, 23, died Monday, May 23, 2005 at his farm from a farming accident.

Jeffrey Edmund Schmitz was born on September 8, 1981 the son of Gerald and Marti (Tieskotter) Schmitz in Decorah, Iowa. Jeffrey attended South Winneshiek School until the seventh grade and then graduated from North Fayette High School in 2000. Jeff then graduated from Iowa State University in 2004 with a major in Animal Science and a minor in Agronomy. He returned to the family farm south of Festina and married Lindsay Lewis on May 22, 2004 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina. Jeff loved the farm and he loved to do Civil War Re-enactments. Jeff also helped out at the Seed Savers Exchange in Decorah. He loved his Belted Galloway Cattle and Tamworth hogs, his draft horses: Nita, Bertha, Babe and Mike; his horse, Saif; his sheep, chickens, ducks, turkeys; dogs: Sally, Pokey, Spotty, Daisy and Piggwidgeon and Thomas and Mr. Bigglesworth the cats.

While in high school, Jeff was active in 4-H and FFA, receiving the Iowa Farmer and the American Farmer Degrees. Jeff received an FFA State Proficiency Award in the Diversity Category. He participated in the National Dairy Judging Contest and the National Dairy Quiz Bowl. He also played football, golf, and was on the Calmar Swim Team. He participated in Speech, the Geography Bee in Middle School and played percussion.

Jeff's survivors include his wife, Lindsay Schmitz, Festina, IA; his mother: Marti Andera and husband Marv, West Union, IA; brother: Curt Schmitz, West Union, IA; sister: Kelli Schmitz, West Union, IA; step-sister: Kelsey Andera, Cresco, IA; father-in-law: Steve Lewis, Columbia, IA and mother-in-law: Barbara Lewis, Des Moines, IA; paternal grandmother: Irene Schmitz, Ossian, IA; maternal grandparents: Andrew and Bernie Tieskotter, Little Turkey, IA; step-grandmother: Grace Andera, Cresco, IA. Seven uncles: Paul Schmitz, Mabel, MN; Richard Tieskotter (Marlene) Lawler, IA; Dennis (Kathy) Tieskotter, Lawler, IA; Mark (Diane) Tieskotter, Waucoma, IA; Roy (Nancy) Tieskotter, New Hampton, IA; Dan Tieskotter, Alta Vista, IA; Jerry Tieskotter, Little Turkey, IA. Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Schmitz on January 26, 2003; a brother in infancy: Jon Michael Schmitz; his paternal grandfather: Edmund Schmitz; uncle: David Tieskotter and aunt: Marlene Tieskotter and step-grandfather: Albert Andera.


Kenneth Knutson

Funeral services for Kenneth A. Knutson of Ridgeway were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 27 at the Madison Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway.

Interment was in Madison Lutheran Cemetery in rural Ridgeway.

Kenneth, 77, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.


Joyce Johnson

Memorial services for Joyce T. Johnson of Eugene, OR, formally of the Harmony area, were held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 20 at the Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony, MN.

Inurnment will be held at a later date at Scotland Cemetery in rural Harmony.

Joyce, 88, died Sunday, May 15, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.


Joseph Hildahl

Funeral services for Joseph T. Hildahl of New Hampton will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, June 1 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Reverend Kevin Frey and Reverend Gene Hermeier officiating.

Edith Kolthoff will be the organist and will accompany those in attendance singing "Just As I Am," "In The Garden," and "How Great Thou Art." Ronnie Hildahl will sing "The Lord's Prayer." Interment will be in the New Hampton Cemetery with Vern Laures, Jim Klunder Sr., Harry Gilbert, Mike Carlin, Lee Stover, Ronnie Hildahl, and Joe Sheehy serving as casket bearers.

Friends were to call from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton and an hour prior to services at the church.

Joseph, 68, died Saturday, May 28, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Joseph Theodore Hildahl was born June 6, 1936, in rural Elma, IA, the son of Alfred & Cora (Johnson) Hildahl. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Saude and attended country school in Howard County.

On June 18, 1961, Joe was united in marriage to Janis Dahlen at Crane Creek Lutheran Church. Following their marriage the couple lived in many places in the Jerico area until moving to New Hampton in 1987. Through the years Joe had worked at White Farm Equipment in Charles City and various jobs in New Hampton; most recently maintenance at Klunder's Kafe in New Hampton. Joe was also a faithful carrier for the Waterloo Courier for 17 years. He enjoyed playing cards, visiting, and going to family gatherings. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton.

Joe is survived by his son John of New Hampton; four brothers Casper Hildahl of New Hampton, Stanley Hildahl of Peyton, CO, Arlo Hildahl of Marshalltown, and Alton Hildahl of Spring Lake, NC; two sisters Rose Marie Feenstra of Cresco and Janice Salazar of Hereford, TX; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Janis on April 11, 2003.


Roberta Bonnell

Funeral services for Roberta M. Bonnell of Elma will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, June 1 at Saetersdal Lutheran church, rural Lime Springs with Reverend Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating.

Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 2 at Grand Detour Cemetery in Grand Detour, IL.

Friends were to call from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma and an hour prior to services at the church.

Roberta, 59, died Saturday, May 28, 2005 at her home in Elma.

Roberta Maxine Bonnell was born April 1, 1946 at Dixon, IL, the daughter of Frank D. & Marjorie B. (Cook) Bonnell Sr. She attended Dixon High School in Dixon, IL. After her schooling she was united in marriage to John Smith on October 15, 1963 at the Church of God in Dixon, IL by Reverend Dickes. Following their marriage the couple resided on a farm between Franklin Grove, IL and Nachusa, IL. They later moved to Nachusa.

Roberta worked as an aide at the Dixon Developmental Center in Dixon, IL. After her husband's death, she moved her family to LeRoy, MN to be closer to her parents in 1979. The family then lived in various areas in Minnesota, Iowa and Texas settling in the Elma area in 1992. Throughout the years Roberta worked as a nurse's aide, truck driver and a waitress in various places.

She enjoyed baking, crocheting, animals, flowers, gardening and talking on her CB Radio. She taught at Vacation Bible School at Saetersdal Lutheran Church.

Roberta is survived by her three children Joanna (Brent) Mensink of Grand Meadow, MN, Jacob Smith of Elma, IA, and Dolly (Rick) Hovey of Lime Springs, IA; a daughter-in-law Ruth (Tom) Rolfes of Protivin, IA; a sister Frances (Don) Widell of Chester, IA; three brothers Willis (Blanch) Bonnell of Tomahawk, WI, Rodney Bonnell of Modesto, CA, and Frank (Cheryl) Bonnell of Franklin Grove, IL; nine grandchildren; six step grandchildren; one great grandchild; three step great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John Smith Sr.; son John Smith Jr.; brother Norman Bonnell; and two sisters Connie Mull and Katie Wayne.

Lawrence Hanson

Funeral services for Lawrence E. Hanson of Cresco were held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 3, 2005 at Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Msgr. Stanley Hayek officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Lector was Alan Hanson, organist was Suzanne Ollendick and soloist was Joe Wacha. The honorary pallbearer was his long time friend and fellow businessman, Arnold Spier. Pallbearers were: Virgil Krug, Alan Hanson, Edwin Koppen, Marvin Koppen, Lyle Hanson, and Richard Norland.

Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Lawrence, 92, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco, Iowa.

Lawrence was born October 18, 1912 in Palo Alto county, near Emmetsburg, IA, the son of Otto and Rose (Gappa) Hanson. As most young men in that era, he attended rural school through the eighth grade and then worked full time on the farm and worked on the roads walking behind the graders to make the road smoother. Lawrence believed so much in education though that he, at the age of 67 achieved his G.E.D.

On July 2, 1935, he was united in marriage to Velma Broadwell at Whittemore, IA. He ran a gas station at Fenton, IA, farmed by Titonka, IA, and in 1958 purchased the Gambles Hardware Store in Cresco, IA. In 1971 they moved to Decorah, IA and worked as a cheese maker at the Frankville cheese factory where he received many awards for his cheese. He later worked delivering the Decorah newspaper to the local Decorah businesses. They moved back to Cresco in 1988.

Lawrence was an avid photographer, loved to read, and tour the countryside looking at scenery and enjoying nature and its wonders. He also enjoyed woodworking and crafted many wooden tulips, and photographic clocks that have been sold worldwide.

He is survived by his wife, Velma; one daughter: Rhonda (Dale) Vrba of Cresco, IA; one son: LuVerne Hanson of Forest City, IA; eight grandchildren: Scott (Nancy) Vrba, Gina Vrba, Toni (Virgil) Krug, Patsy (Gene) Pavelka, Becky (Lyle) Hanson, Mark Hanson, Bobbie (Mark) Hattlestad, and Shawn (Gayle) Hanson; great-grandchildren: Sarah (Tim), Amber (Caleb), Mirah, Tyler, Logan, Steven, Aaron, Megan, Jared, Franklin and Amanda; one sister: Lyllah Mae Norland of Mankato, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Orville and Merrildean; and two sisters: Marcile and Vilo.


Bess Buchholtz

Funeral services for Bess Buchholtz of Riceville were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2005 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church with Pastor Michael Parris officiating.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery. Ann Mae Roethler was organist and accompanied the congregation as they sang, "How Great Thou Art," "Amazing Grace," and "The Old Rugged Cross". Pall bearers were: Charles Machin, John Machin, David Howland, Tim Howland, Jim Gerardy, and Rich Meiers.

Bess, 92, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Bess Irene Buchholtz was born on February 9, 1913 at Newton, Iowa athe daughter of Arthur and Emma (Dixson) Machin.

On November 24, 1930 she was united in marriage to Louis Buchholtz at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, IA. They became the parents of three children, Evelyn, Rose Marie and Dean.

Bess baked wedding cakes for many years, and was well known by everyone. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and the American Legion.

Survivors include a daughter: Evelyn Meiers of Tipton, IA; a son: Dean (Patricia) Buchholtz of Morris, IL; four grandchildren: Dennis (Shirley) Meiers of Port Byron, IL, Richard (Lisa) Meiers of Tipton, IA, Debra (Jim) Gerardy of Maquoketa, IA and Kirk Buchholtz of Naperville, IL; 10 great-granchidlren; and one brother: Harold Machin of Osage, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louie; a daughter: Rose Marie Miller; three sisters: Bernice O'Rourke, Ardis Machin, and Dorothy Machin; two brothers: Robert J. and Raymond Machin.


Jim Novak

Funeral services for Jim Novak were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2005 at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

Interment was in Holy Trinity Church Cemetery in Protivin.

Visitation was held from 4:00 to 8:00 on Thursday at the Conway Funeral Home in Protivin. There was a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:00 p.m. and a 7:00 p.m. Scripture Service on Thursday evening. On Friday, there was visitation prior to services. Lector was Lester Lechtenberg (son-in-law), gifts were carried by Darci Russell, Debra Garbes, and Heather Lechtenberg. Organist was Marlene Pecinovsky and accompanied the Holy Trinity Choir in singing. "Here I Am Lord," "Amazing Grace," "On Eagle's Wings," and "How Great Thou Art". Pallbearers were: Dustin and Dana Lechteberg, Darin and Doug Drilling, and Jason and Matthew Novak.

Jim, 86, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Hampton, Iowa after a short illness.

James Frank Novak was born in Winneshiek County, Iowa, northeast of Protivin on September 28, 1918, the son of Charles and Anna (Praska) Novak. He attended the rural school and following his education, he stayed on the farm and helped with the farming.

On October 27, 1942, Jim was united in marriage to Marie Haskovec in the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at Lourdes. Following their marriage, Jim started farming and did so until he started working at Allied Construction in 1953 and worked until his retirement in 1970.

Jim was a life time member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, a member of the Knights of Columbus, he enjoyed fishing and woodworking. He finished building his house after the farming was done.

He is survived by his three children: Donna (Lester) Lechtenberg of Spillville, IA, Diane (Delbert) Drilling of Raymond, IA, and Duane (Patty) Novak of Rochester, MN; nine grandchildren: Dustin (Debbi), Dana (fianc/ Vanessa Funk) and Heather Lechtenberg (fianc/ Brian Reicherts); Darci (Roger) Russell, Debra (Leon) Garbes, Darin (Stacey) and Doug Drilling; Jason (Lori) and Matthew (Heidi) Novak; seven great-grandchildren: Samantha Drilling, Stephanie and Katelyn Russell, Andrew, Ella, and Nora Novak, and Ryan Garbes; and one sister: Sophie Bender of Decorah, IA.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Marie on July 23, 1979; one brother: Julius Novak; and two sisters: Henrietta Mrachek and Gertrude Voyek.

Francis Bouska

Funeral services for Francis C. (Frank) Bouska of Protivin were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 10, 2005 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, Iowa with Rev. Robert Ament and Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Lectors were Melissa Woods, Kerri Bouska, Chuck Meyer, and Carla Coleman. Cassandra Lensing gave the Euology. The offertory gifts were carried by Dawn French, Tanya Hemesath, and Steven Meyer. Organist was Verda Mikota, soloist was Colleen Busta and Czech Choir, Marc Frana, special music and violinist was Brittany Lensing. Pallbearers were all of Francis's grandchildren. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin.

Visitation was held on Thursday, June 9 at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 5:00 p.m., there was also visitation at the church on Friday after 9:30 a.m.

Francis, 87, died Monday, June 6, 2005 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa after a long illness.

Francis Charles Bouska was born July 8, 1917 to George and Ida (Jirak) Bouska on the family farm near Protivin, IA. Francis graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin in 1935.

Francis married Pauline Frana on June 2, 1941 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Together they farmed near Protivin for many years and he also did custom field work. Francis was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Workmen, Farm Bureau and the Protivin Creamery. Francis enjoyed reading the daily paper while drinking coffee, dancing, music and card playing. His other hobbies included hunting, fishing and making wood. He was a lifetime traveler and traveled quite extensively. This included flying his own planes and riding an assortment of motorcycles.

Francis' survivors include his five sons: Francis Jr., of Freeport, IA; George and wife Kathleen of New Hampton, IA; Quentin of Minneapolis, MN; Joseph and wife LaVonne of Ft. Atkinson, IA; and Jerry of Ft. Atkinson, IA; four daughters: Kathleen Meyer and husband Charles of Waterloo, IA; Anita Hemesath and husband Richard of Ossian, IA; Pauline Haskovec and husband Kenneth of Cresco, IA; LaDeane Lensing and husband Marvin of Cresco, IA; 32 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.; two sisters Evelyn Balk of Lawler, IA and Edna Praska of Cresco, IA; and one sister-in-law: Hattie Frana, Spillville, IA.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Pauline; two sons: John and James and his wife, Deborah; four grandchildren: Alan and Joel Meyer and Caroline and Michael Bouska in infancy.


Milton Kach

Funeral services for Milton A. Kach of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2005 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco, IA with Rev. Michael Massa officiating.

Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco, IA.

Milton, 89, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at the Evans Memorial Home.

Milton Alfred Kach was born October 27, 1915 in Winneshiek County, the son of Alfred and Winnie (Teetshorn) Kach. He attended rural schools in Winneshiek and Howard County. Milton started farming at a young age and farmed most of his adult life.

He married Hedwig Gerber September 4, 1935. To this union four children were born: Shirley, Gloria, Gerald, and Carol. After he retired from farming, they moved to Cresco, where he worked at Erdahl's Hatchery and later as custodian for the Howard Winneshiek Community School District.

Survivors include his wife Hedwig of 69 years, his children Shirley (Jerome) Erdahl of Cresco, Gloria Hove of Decorah, Gerald (Ann) Kach of

Cresco, and Carol (John) Hove of Ridgeway; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren; his sisters Virgie Hruska of Cresco, Evelyn Lewis of Mason City, and his brother LuVerne Kach of Cresco.

Shirley's family: Kathy, Adam, Nikki, and Blake; Julie, Jeff, Jenny, Jeremy, Tara, Brandi, Megan, and Jordan; Brian, Gail, Samuel, Jonathan, and Erica; Jason, Tyler, Jacob, and Brendan.

Gloria's family: Todd, Tammy, Kyle, and Alexis.

Gerald's family: Kelly, Matt, and Kasie; Karla, Randy, Blake, and Kennedy; Kristine, Brian, Alexa, and Logan; Scott and Sarah.

Carol's family: Sheila, Ashley, Joshua, and Jared; Shelly, Corey, Kayla, and Colton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Alice Mosley; a son-in-law, Paul L. Hove; and a grandson, Kirk John Hove.


Frank Watson

Funeral services for Frank A. Watson of Riceville, formerly of Saratoga, were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Visitation was held on Monday, June 13 at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Rosary was at 4:00 p.m. and the Scripture service at 6:00 p.m.

Frank, 101, died Saturday, June 11, 2005 at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Frank Allen Watson was born June 24, 1903 near Saratoga, Iowa on the family farm to Howard C. Watson and Sarah Seavey Watson.

He married Bernice Jones on June 15, 1927 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Chester, Iowa. Bernice passed away March of 1951.

He was a farmer and raised shorthorn cattle. He was a township assessor many years, clerk for Saratoga Cemetery, and director for Saratoga #8 school. He moved to the Riceville Rest Home in 1995.

Frank enjoyed hunting, fishing, flowers, and his family and grandchildren. Sharing his life experiences was important to him. He was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Chester.

He is survived by two daughters: Elaine Jacobson of Cresco and Shirley Sizer of Waterloo; one son: Carrol (Evelyn) Watson of Lime Springs; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers: Ben and infant Clark; and one infant grandson.


William Tieskotter

Memorial services for William J. Tieskotter of rural Greenleafton, MN were held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7 at Greenleafton Lutheran Church in Harmony, MN.

Avis Johnson

Funeral services for Avis E. Johnson of Alta Vista were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 10 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alta Vista with Reverend Vincent C. Fricke and Reverend Kevin Frey officiating.

Kevin Masemann was the organist and accompanied those in attendance singing "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art," and "My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less." Interment was in Union Cemetery in Alta Vista. Pallbearers were: Ralph Hennessy, Richard Larsen, Charles Larsen, Eldon Groth, John Hollingsworth, and Marie Van Kilsdonk. Honorary pallbearers were: Drew Johnson, Deanne Johnson, Dana Johnson, Ellen Nosbisch, Randy Nosbisch, Amy Nosbisch, Monica Marvin, and Carol Gunderson.

Visitation was held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma and an hour prior to services at the church.

Avis, 74, died Monday, June 6, 2005 as a result of an automobile accident south of Cresco.

Avis Eileen Bachmann Johnson was born January 2, 1931, at Elma, IA the daughter of Alfred & Ella (Groth) Bachmann. She attended elementary and country school in Howard County and graduated from the Riceville High School in 1949. Avis received her R.N. Degree from Allen Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Waterloo in 1955.

On October 25, 1956, Avis was united in marriage to Melvin Johnson at St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church. To this union three children were born. The couple resided in Alta Vista where they operated Johnson Produce. Avis stayed at home until returning to nursing in November 1990 and was currently working at the Colonial Manor in Elma.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Alta Vista. She enjoyed quilting, playing cards, attending sporting events and spending time with her grandchildren. On a Wednesday, once a month, Avis had a day out called "Cousins Day' which was very special to her.

Avis is survived by her three children Dean (Sandra) Johnson of Faribault, MN, Susan (Tim) Nosbisch of North Washington, IA, and Keith (Lori) Johnson of Alta Vista, IA; six grandchildren Drew, Deanne, and Dana Johnson, Ellen, Randy, and Amy Nosbisch; two sisters Lorraine Hollingsworth of Kenosha, WI and Ila VanKilsdonk of Phoenix, AZ, and many friends and extended family.She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother Fred Delbert Bachmann.


Melvin Johnson

Funeral services for Melvin E. Johnson of Alta Vista were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 10 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alta Vista with Reverend Vincent C. Fricke and Reverend Kevin Frey officiating.

Kevin Masemann was the organist and accompanied those in attendance singing "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art," and "My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less." Interment was in Union Cemetery in Alta Vista. Pallbearers were: Randy Erion, Sidney Johnson, Charles Johnson, Jim Johnson, Ron Underwood, and Mark Manning. Honorary pallbearers were: Drew Johnson, Deanne Johnson, Dana Johnson, Ellen Nosbisch, Randy Nosbisch, Amy Nosbisch, Virgil Marvin, and Duane Gerhardt.

Visitation was held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma and an hour prior to services at the church.

Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma handled the arrangements.

Melvin, 76, died Monday, June 6, 2005 as a result of an automobile accident south of Cresco.

Melvin Eugene Johnson was born June 13, 1928, in Nashua, IA, the son of Victor M. & June E. (Ritter) Johnson. Melvin started his schooling at Nashua and moved with his family to Alta Vista in 1938. He continued his education in Alta Vista, graduating from the Alta Vista High School in 1947. After his schooling he worked at the Johnson Produce with his father until his death in 1948. He then worked with his mother in the produce until purchasing the business in 1956.

On October 25, 1956, Melvin was united in marriage to Avis Bachmann at St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church. To this union three children were born. Following their marriage the couple resided in Alta Vista and continued to operate Johnson Produce until 2002. Melvin was active in the community serving the City of Alta Vista as mayor for many years, town council, Zion Lutheran Church Council, where he had served as chairman, Boy Scout Troup 97 leader, Board of Directors for Farmers Lumber and Coal in Alta Vista, and basketball coach for St. Williams High School.

Melvin loved horses, and his hobby farm, playing cards, and attending sporting events and being with his grandchildren. On a Saturday, once a month, Melvin had a day out called "Cousins Day" which was very special to him.

Melvin is survived by his three children Dean (Sandra) Johnson of Faribault, MN, Susan (Tim) Nosbisch of North Washington, IA, and Keith (Lori) Johnson of Alta Vista, IA; six grandchildren Drew, Deanne, and Dana Johnson, Ellen, Randy, and Amy Nosbisch; two sisters Phyllis (Bernard) Felder of Alta Vista and Betty (Alan) Manning of Colwell; and many friends and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Donald Dean Johnson.

Sarah Whittle

Mass of Christian Burial for Sarah Jane "Sally" Whittle of Elkader was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 10, 2005 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elkader with Rev. Paul R. Peters officiating.

Lectors were Peggy Whittle and Lisa Nix; Eucharistic Minister was Marion Brockman and the Eulogy Reading was given by Roberta Rathert. Organist was Darlene Dittmer and Roxanne Rathert was soloist. Pallbearers were: Randy Rathert, Rick Rathert, Doug Parvin, Fred Knoke, John Whittle, Jim Whittle, Pete Evans, Jim Garbina, J.R. Brockman, and David Mueller. Honorary pallbearers were: Becky Ullom, Kay Rathert, Kim Tappe, Ann Parvin, and Amy Knoke. Interment was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Elkader.

Visitation was held from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2005 at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader. There was a Scripture Service at 3:00 p.m.

Sarah, 76, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005 en route home from St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN after a courageous battle with heart disease.

Sarah Jane Whittle was born on June 1, 1929 in Cresco, IA to Raymond and Mae (Hallman) Rathert. After graduating from Cresco High School, she earned her teaching certificate at Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, IA. She later attended Luther College in Decorah and Upper Iowa University, where she earned her degree.

She was united in marriage to Walter Whittle on October 17, 1970. They made their home in Elkader after their marriage. Sally enjoyed a 43 year career, teaching in elementary schools in northeast Iowa including many years in the West Union School District where she retired. She was a devoted and loving wife, sister, and aunt whose family came second only to her faith. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elkader with her husband for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Walter Whittle of Elkader; a sister: Mary (John) Wildman of Elkader; a brother: Will (Nancy) Rathert of Houston, TX; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Jim.


James Milota

Memorial services for James C. Milota of Rudd, Iowa will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, located at 302 5th Street SE in Mason City, Iowa with Father Harry Koelker officiating and Father Thomas Milota concelebrating.

Inurnment will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been made by the Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa.

James, 75, died Friday, June 17, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.

James Clement Milota was born September 14, 1929 to James and Marie (Burian) Milota in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He married Kathryn Ann Burke on July 11, 1980 in Mason City, Iowa.

James graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa with a Bachelors Degree in education and from Saint Thomas Seminary in Denver, CO. James was a priest for 24 years and a high school teacher for 30 years before his retirement.

He was a member of the Saint Joseph's Catholic Parish of Mason City, Iowa.

James enjoyed traveling, writing, political involvement for social justice, and birding in Washington, Texas, California, and Iowa.

Survivors include his wife Kathryn Milota of Rudd; five stepchildren: Michael (Sharon) Burke of Mason City, Dan (Carla) Burke of Mason City, Julie (Leroy) Jansen of Rudd, James (Ruby) Burke of Atascadero, CA, and David (Amy) Burke of Minneapolis, MN; plus one brother Leo (Betty) Milota of Bensenville, IL. Survivors also include step grandchildren: Joshua and Andrew Burke, Kathryn and Joseph Burke, Tyler, Anthony and Sara Jansen, Jessica Burke, Heather, Kate, Jessica and Jon Wintermeyer, and Maya and Noah Burke.

James was preceded in death by his parents; and one step granddaughter Kelli Burke.

Pallbearers were: Justin Andrus, Caleb Houdek, Dustin Pierce, Jeremy Pierce, Thomas Houdek, Jordan Houdek, and Pvt. Joshua Houdek, serving in Iraq. Military rites at graveside: Helof-Holm VFW Chapter #1977, Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post #163, and Hamre-Giesen DAV Chapter #8. Interment was in St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery in Plymouth Rock, Iowa.

Marvin, 77, died Friday, June 17, 2005 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa following a long illness.

Marvin Merle Houdek was born on May 9, 1928 the son of Charles and Rosella (Harms) Houdek in Calmar, Iowa. He moved with his family to Lime Springs and Burr Oak, where he attended school. Marv served two years with the US Navy and then he graduated from Canton High School in 1949.

Marv married Ann Sheridan on May 28, 1951 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Lawler, IA. They lived in Decorah and Marv drove a beer truck for Darling Distributing for twenty-six years. In 1966, they purchased his father's farm near Burr Oak. They owned the Crystal Inn in Burr Oak for twelve years, retiring in 1990. Marv enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and playing pool, but especially loved being with his family, children and grandchildren.

Marv was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Plymouth Rock and the Knights of Columbus.

Marv's survivors include his wife, Ann Houdek, Burr Oak, IA; five daughters: Mary Jane (Ron) Michels, Decorah, IA, Roselyn Houdek, Burr Oak, IA, Georgette (Jeff) Pierce, Cresco, IA, Colleen (Loren) Busch, Mabel, MN, and Jacqueline (Darwin) Kupka, Decorah, IA; two sons: John (Diane) Houdek, Decorah, IA and Michael (Loreen) Houdek, Burr Oak, IA; 15 grandchildren: Alex Michels, Jeremy (Emily) Pierce, Sarah and Dustin Pierce; Celine Houdek, Crystal, Chelcie and Cloey Busch; Justin and Jaimisen Andrus; Thomas, Jennifer and Jordan Houdek; Joshua (Jennifer) Houdek and Caleb Houdek.; two great grandchildren: August Pierce and Conner Houdek; three brothers: Dwayne (Diane) Houdek, Mabel, MN; Richard (Marilyn) Houdek, Rochester, MN and Merle (Carol) Houdek, Rochester, MN; and one sister: Marion Johnson, Harmony, MN and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; one brother-in-law: Paul Johnson; one sister-in-law: Mary Houdek and one nephew: Randy Johnson.


Dr. Charles S. Field

Memorial services for Dr. Charles S. Field of Rochester, MN, formally of Cresco, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 17 at First Presbyterian Church.

Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester.

Dr. Charles, 59, died Saturday, June 11, 2005.


Lucille Adams

Funeral services for Lucille Adams of Riceville will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 23 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Rev. Raphael Ludwig

A Funeral Mass for Rev. Raphael A. Ludwig will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, June 29 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas with Archbishop Jerome Hanus celebrating the Mass.

Diocesan Priests will be concelebrants. Kathy Meyer was the organist and gift bearers were his sisters. Lectors were Mike Kobliska, Jean Loes, and Teresa Schroeder. Servers were Eric Kobliska, Craig Kobliska, and Amy Kobliska. Interment will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes, Iowa with Steve Kobliska, Tom Ludwig, Jason Ludwig, Kim Ollendieck, Jerry Schmitz, and Todd Mehlberger serving as pallbearers.

Rev. Ludwig, 74, died suddenly on Saturday, June 25 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Raphael Anthony Ludwig, son of Joseph and Mary (Chihak) Ludwig, was born on October 19, 1930 on a farm near Elma, Iowa. He attended country school in rural Howard County and Lourdes Catholic School and graduated from Elma Immaculate Conception High School in 1949. He then graduated from Loras College in 1953, attended St. Bernard's Seminary in Dubuque and was ordained into the priesthood February 2, 1957. Father Ludwig served at the following parishes: St. Ludmilla's and St. Wenceslaus, both in Cedar Rapids, St. Joseph's in New Hampton, St. Mary's at Marshalltown, St. Boniface at Garwin, St. Edward's at Waterloo, Assumption Catholic Church at Little Turkey, Sacred Heart at Reilly Ridge, Team Ministry at St. Nicholas at Evansdale and St. John's at Waterloo, S.S. Peter and Paul at Sherrill, St. Francis of Assisi at Balltown, St. Luke's at St. Lucas and St. Mary's at Waucoma. Father Ludwig retired to Ft. Atkinson in 2000 and continued to serve neighboring parishes on the weekends. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf and skiing.

Those left to cherish his memory are his three brothers and their spouses, Joseph and Elsie Ludwig, William and Rita Ludwig and John and Connie Ludwig, all of Elma; three sisters: Mildred Kobliska of Elma, Mary Bauer of Scottsdale, AZ and Josephine and Ray Mehlberger of Marion; his sister-in-law, Marge Ludwig of Elma; his uncle, Msgr. John Chihak of Garner; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Francis; two brothers-in-law: Leo Kobliska and Glen Bauer; his niece: Rosemary Gansen and his uncle: Msgr. Anthony Chihak.

Funeral services for Michael O'Shea of Ridgeway were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 25 at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Bluffton.

Interment was in St. Bridget's Catholic Church Cemetery in Bluffton.

Edward O'Brien

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 27 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Monsignor John Hemann celebrating the Mass.

Theresa Burke was the organist and accompanied the church choir and those in attendance singing "Here I Am Lord", "Be Not Afraid," and "Amazing Grace." The soloist was Tiffany O'Brien singing "The Old Rugged Cross." Lectors were Penny Meyer, Jennifer Waddell, Tracy Waddell, Tammy O'Brien, and Jessica Patterson. The offertory gifts were presented by Michelle Hiedemann, Linda Block, Lyndsey O'Brien, and Rachel Kephart. Mass servers were Jake Burke and Emily Nibaur and Ann O'Brien was Eucharistic Minister. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Elma with Neal Waddell, Nate O'Brien, Mike O'Brien, Kenneth Joe Gansen, Steve Anderlik, Nick Pickar, Wade Waddell, Jesse O'Brien, Scott O'Brien, Kevin O'Brien, and Chris Pickar serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were: Ed Novak, Harold Thiele, Loren Zimmerman, Noah Martin, Luke Oberholtzer, Aaron Oberholtzer, Harry Oberholtzer, and Mervin Martin.

Friends were to call from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma where there was a 6:00 Rosary. Visitation was also an hour prior to services at the church.

Edward, 80, died Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Edward J. OâBrien was born August 18, 1924 in Howard County, the son of William and Evelyn (Hunt) O'Brien.

On June 3, 1947, he was united in marriage to Anna Marie Shock at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. Mr. O'Brien farmed most of his life Northwest of Elma. He also custom bailed, ground feed for his neighbors and sheared sheep for 47 years. He retired in 1999 and moved to Elma. During his retirement he enjoyed providing transportation for his Mennonite friends.

Edward is survived by his wife Anna Marie O'Brien of Elma; two daughters Patricia (Donald) Loomer of Sumner, IA and Janiece (Randy) Pickar of St. Ansgar, IA; two sons Dennis (Ann) O'Brien of Elma and Daniel (Barb) O'Brien of Elma; 14 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three sisters Bernice Schmauss of Cresco, IA, Frances Schwickerath of Cedar Falls, IA, and Elizabeth (DeWayne) Kruger of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters Myrtle, Margaret and Cecelia; a brother William.


Alyce Moore

Funeral services for Alyce B. Moore of Harmony, MN were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 23 at the Root River Church of Brethren in rural Preston, MN.

Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Alyce, 90, died Saturday, June 18, 2005 at the Preston Good Samaritan Center in Preston, MN.


Michael Karrigan

Michael P. Karrigan, 57, of Wildwood, IL passed away suddenly June 18, 2005.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Kolbet; daughters Michelle (Andrew) Ptasienski of Grayslake, IL, and Kathleen Karrigan of Round Lake, IL; grandsons Joey, Jackson, Abraham and Andersen Ptasienski and brother Bill (Diane) Karrigan. Mike was the fond son-in-law of Paul and Geneva Kolbet of Cresco, Iowa; brother-in-law of Sister Joyce, Kevin (Janean), and Phil Kolbet.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Jean Karrigan and sister Judy Karrigan.

He was a member of St. Gilbert Catholic Church and enjoyed his recent retirement by playing golf and watching his grandsons play sports.

Mike was a Vietnam War veteran and served in the United States Army.
