He then

College
in 1953,
attended
St.
Bernard's
Seminary
in
Dubuque
and was
ordained
into the
priesthood
February
2, 1957.

Conception Church in Elma with Monsignor
John Hemann celebrating the Mass.
Theresa Burke was the organist and
accompanied the church choir and those
in attendance singing "Here I Am Lord",
"Be Not Afraid," and "Amazing Grace."
The soloist was Tiffany O'Brien singing
"The Old Rugged Cross." Lectors were
Penny Meyer, Jennifer Waddell, Tracy
Waddell, Tammy O'Brien, and Jessica
Patterson. The offertory gifts were
presented by Michelle Hiedemann, Linda
Block, Lyndsey O'Brien, and Rachel
Kephart. Mass servers were Jake Burke
and Emily Nibaur and Ann O'Brien was
Eucharistic Minister. Interment was in
Calvary Cemetery in Elma with Neal
Waddell, Nate O'Brien, Mike O'Brien,
Kenneth Joe Gansen, Steve Anderlik, Nick
Pickar, Wade Waddell, Jesse O'Brien,
Scott O'Brien, Kevin O'Brien, and Chris
Pickar serving as pallbearers. Honorary
pallbearers were: Ed Novak, Harold
Thiele, Loren Zimmerman, Noah Martin,
Luke Oberholtzer, Aaron Oberholtzer,
Harry Oberholtzer, and Mervin Martin.

Funeral Home in Elma where there was a
6:00 Rosary. Visitation was also an hour

Edward, 80, died Thursday, June 23,
2005 at Allen Memorial Hospital in
Waterloo.
Edward J. OâBrien was born August 18,
1924 in Howard County, the son of
William and Evelyn (Hunt) O'Brien.
On June 3, 1947, he was united in
marriage to Anna Marie Shock at
Immaculate Conception Church in Elma.
Mr. O'Brien farmed most of his life
Northwest of Elma. He also custom
bailed, ground feed for his neighbors
and sheared sheep for 47 years. He
retired in 1999 and moved to Elma.
During his retirement he enjoyed
providing transportation for his
Mennonite friends.
Edward is survived by his wife Anna
Marie O'Brien of Elma; two daughters
Patricia (Donald) Loomer of Sumner, IA
and Janiece (Randy) Pickar of St.
Ansgar, IA; two sons Dennis (Ann)
O'Brien of Elma and Daniel (Barb)
O'Brien of Elma; 14 grandchildren; nine
great grandchildren; three sisters
Bernice Schmauss of Cresco, IA, Frances
Schwickerath of Cedar Falls, IA, and
Elizabeth (DeWayne) Kruger of Waterloo.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; 3 sisters Myrtle, Margaret and

Karrigan, 57, of Wildwood, IL passed
away suddenly June 18, 2005.
Survivors include his wife, Kay
Kolbet; daughters Michelle (Andrew)
Ptasienski of Grayslake, IL, and
Kathleen Karrigan of Round Lake, IL;
grandsons Joey, Jackson, Abraham and
Andersen Ptasienski and brother Bill
(Diane) Karrigan. Mike was the fond
son-in-law of Paul and Geneva Kolbet of
Cresco, Iowa; brother-in-law of Sister
Joyce, Kevin (Janean), and Phil Kolbet.
He was preceded in death by his
parents Lloyd and Jean Karrigan and
sister Judy Karrigan.
He was a member of St. Gilbert
Catholic Church and enjoyed his recent
retirement by playing golf and watching
his grandsons play sports.
Mike was a Vietnam War veteran and
served in the United States Army.

Irene, 73, died Tuesday, June 28,
2005 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester,
MN after a 15-year battle with cancer.
Irene Quinn was born June 18, 1932 at
Pettibone (Kidder County) North Dakota.
She was the youngest of five children
born to Harry Milo Morse and Rose Roenna
Neubauer Morse. Irene was affectionately
called Tudy Morse by her family and
friends in her younger years.
The family left North Dakota in the
late 30's and settled in LeRoy, MN where
she attended school and graduated from
LeRoy Public in 1949. After graduation
she moved to Waterloo, Iowa where she
was employed at the offices of Rath
Packing Co.
She married Bernard Quinn in
Waterloo, Iowa on November 17, 1951. To
this union one child was born, son Dan
J. While Bernard was in service they
lived on Long Island, New York and at
Murfreesboro, Tennesee. After their
return from the service they settled in
Riceville, Iowa where Irene was employed
by Riceville Veterinary Service for 32
years under many different
veterinarians.
From 1989 to 1997 Irene was
affiliated with the Redman Inn in
McIntire, Iowa first as co-owner and
then owner. During this time she
developed lasting friendships with many
local and area people.
From 1998 to 2001 Irene was employed
as clerk for the LeRoy Municipal Liquor
Store, LeRoy, Minnesota. In 2001, she
started cashiering at Andy's Mini Mart
in Riceville, Iowa until the time of her
death.
Irene spent her life devoted to her
only child, son Dan J. and only
grandchild, grandson Chad J. She loved
the phrase Quinn's 3. Irene wanted to be
remembered by the phrase "I did the best
I could." Irene will be remembered for
her collection on penchant watches and
was rarely seen without one. Irene
enjoyed crocheting afghans. She was also
an avid reader and had collected a
library of hard cover books.
Survivors include her grandson, Chad
J. and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband Bernard in 1987;
son Dan J. in 2001; brothers: Wesley,
Harold, and Wayne; and her only sister:
Lorraine.

2005 at his home in Kendallville, IA.
Arnold Dean Trouten was born on
November 29, 1935 to Willard and Gladys
(Headington) Trouten in Kendallville,
IA. He attended country school and
graduated from Cresco High School. After
graduation Arnold entered the United
States Army and served in Puerto Rico
during the Koren War. When he returned
from serving his country, he worked and
retired from the Creamery in Cresco for
45 years. He also farmed in the
Kendallville area. After his retirement,
he enjoyed spending time with his
children and his grandchildren.
He is survived by five children: Joe
(Heidi) Trouten of Lime Springs, IA, and
their children, Whitney, Brenna, and
Braiden, Diane Patterson of Copperas
Cove, TX, Jeff (Linda) Trouten of
Brainerd, MN, Dawn (Dennis) Kleve of
Dundee, IA and their children, Megan,
Kyle, Marissa, and Kody, and Jim Trouten
of Schley, IA and his son Alex; three
sisters: Mary (Gary) Hovey of
Kendallville, IA, Lois (Dick) Ollendieck
of Cresco, IA, and Martha (Duane) Hruska

Donald, 83, died Thursday, June 30,
2005 at his home.
Donald Bernard Mai, Sr. was born
December 8, 1921, at Remsen, IA, the son
of Nic & Florentine (Arens) Mai. He was
a 1939 graduate of St. Mary's High
School in Remsen. On November 10, 1942
he joined the US Army Air Force and
served as a Sergeant in the Medical Corp
during WWII. On May 15, 1945, Donald was
united in marriage to Eta Sitzmann,
while he was home on leave from the
service, at St. Joseph Catholic Church
in Neptune, IA in a double wedding
ceremony with Eta's sister Mildred.
Following their marriage the couple
moved to Florida and later Texas before
Don was called to duty overseas. He was
honorably discharged on January 27,
1946. Following his discharge the couple
farmed north of Remsen for 16 years. The
couple moved to the farm south of New
Hampton in 1962. Don was a lifelong
farmer and always managed to keep busy
by gardening, raising pumpkins and
squash, tinkering in the shed, cutting
wood, hunting especially jackrabbits in
the Remsen area, bowling, cracking
hickory nuts in the winter, and watching
RFDTV, Discovery and the History
Channel. He also enjoyed fishing and the
summer fishing trips up north for the
past 30 years. He was a member of the
Holy Family Parish.
Donald is survived by his wife of 60
years Eta; 15 children Dean (Jane) Mai
of Elma, IA, Pam Mai of New Hampton, IA,
Pat (Tom) Schwickerath of New Hampton,
Lea (Joe) Throndson of New Hampton, IA,
Marlene (Jim) Gaffney of Hiawatha, IA,
Jeanne (Larry) Friedrich of Elma, IA,
Chuck (Darlene) Mai of New Hampton, IA,
Cyndy (Bob) Weiglein of New Hampton, IA,
Don Jr. (Marilee) Mai of New Hampton,

Preston Funeral services
for Jack Preston of Cresco were held at
11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 18 at the
United Methodist Church in Cresco with
Rev. Michael Carey officiating.
Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in
Cresco.

Jack, 83, died Friday, July 15, 2005
at the Regional Health Services of
Howard County.
Jack was born on February 9, 1922 to
Loyd and Ethel Preston in Sauk Centre,
MN. They lived in West Union and New
Hampton before moving to Cresco when
Jack was in the third grade. He
graduated from Cresco High School and
went to work in Washington, D.C. He
enlisted in the army in 1943 and served
in Europe during WWII until March of
1946. He was the army unit officer in
Cresco from 1958 to 1962. He also served
time at Camp McCoy, WI from 1962 to 1969
in positions of assistant adj. and
headquarters commander. He retired from
active reserves in 1975 as a Lieutenant
Colonel. Jack worked at the Cresco Post
Office for 34 years. Jack and Dortha
also ran a printing business which was
taken over from his parents and was
called "Dortha's Wedding Service."
He married Dortha Marie Yarberry in
1944 and they moved to Cresco in 1946.
He was a member of the United
Methodist Church, and enjoyed traveling,
golfing, square dancing, playing cards,
reading, and watching the Cubs.
Family includes his wife Dortha; two
daughters : Debra (Kenneth) Moellers of
Cresco, IA, and Sandra (Gordon) Smith of
Cedar Rapids, IA; six grandchildren:
Korey (Peggy) Moellers of Farmington,
MN, Nathan Moellers (deceased), Jeremy
(Kelly) Moellers of Cresco, IA, Ryan
(Meagan) Moellers of Cresco, IA, Katie
Smith of Iowa City, IA, and Sara Smith
of Cedar Rapids, IA, and four great
grandchildren: Masen Nuebauer, Katelyn
Moellers, Jack Moellers, and Cameran
Moellers.
Jack was a loving husband, father,
and grandfather, and will be dearly
missed.

Walter, 74, died Wednesday, July 13,
2005 at the Cresco Care Center.
Walter was born March 18, 1931, in
Shakopee, MN, one of 13 children to
Peter Carl and Catherine Sophia (Meier)
Schmidt.
He married Bernadette I. Welter on
June 9, 1953, at St. Hubert's Catholic
Church in Chanhassen, MN. To this union,
two sons and three daughters were born.
The couple later divorced. On December
27, 1950, Walter enlisted in the United
States Navy and proudly served his
country during the Korean War assigned
to the Destroyer U.S.S. Ingersoll DD652.
He was honorably discharged on November
15, 1954. His entire career of 51 years
was spent in the plumbing and heating
trade.
Survivors include two sons; Daniel
Schmidt and John (Chris) Schmidt of
Shakopee, MN. Three daughters; Victoria
(Kevin) Walton of Belle Plaine, MN,
Ellen (Dale) Sorenson and Carla (Mark)
Olson all of Shakopee. Four
grandchildren; one sister; Marie
(Francis) Bisek of Shakopee; and five
brothers; Harold Schmidt, Dick (Darlene)
Schmidt, Robert (Dorothy) Schmidt all of
Shakopee, Art Schmidt of Montgomery, MN,
Paul (LaVina) Schmidt of Shakopee.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; two sisters; Ann Brown and
Theresa Lehnen; four brothers; Al
Schmidt, Anthony Schmidt, Joseph Schmidt
and Roman Schmidt in infancy.

Ruth McKone was the organist
accompanying Colleen Busta as the
vocalist. The pall was placed on the
casket by Alma's children. Lectors were
Chris Wardenburg, Laura Conrad, and Barb
Schaufenbuel. The offertory gifts were
presented by Kurt, Chase, Preston, and
Karson Schaufenbuel. Interment was in
Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Lawler.

Schaufenbuel, Travis Schaufenbuel, Curt
Wardenburg, Mike Conrad, and Larry
Schmitt.

Alma, 88, died Thursday, July 14,
2005 at the New Hampton Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center.
Alma Rose (Wieling) Schaufenbuel, was
born June 3, 1917, the daughter of
Joseph and Frances (Bengfort) Wieling,
at Festina, Iowa. She attended school in
Festina.
On September 7, 1938, Alma was united
in marriage to Joseph Carl Schaufenbuel
at Our Lady of Seven Dolars Catholic
Church in Festina, Iowa. The couple
farmed in the Saint Lucas and Lawler
areas. Alma moved to Lawler from the
farm in 1990.
Alma enjoyed gardening, flowers,
visiting with her friends, playing
cards, reading, crocheting, collecting
recipes and especially being with her
family. She was a member of Our Lady of
Mt. Carmel Catholic Church of Lawler,
the Altar and Rosary Society, the
Catholic Daughters of America and served
on the Chickasaw County Council on
Aging.
Those left to cherish her memory are
her daughter: Gladys and husband, Robert
Mitchell of Northfield, MN; two sons;
Lloyd Schaufenbuel and wife Barb of
Solon, IA, Ken Schaufenbuel and wife
Linda of Lawler, IA; four grandchildren;

Irene Menne, Agnes Winter and Mildred
Hackman; and one brother; Gust Wieling.

Evelyn Wendl Funeral
services for Evelyn E. Wendl of Cresco
were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday,
July 16 at Notre Dame Parish-Assumption
Worship Center in Cresco with Rev.
Richard J. Ament officiating.
Polly Jones accompanied James Marik.
Gifts were presented by Verdene Knutson
and Julie Walter. Lector was Virgil
Lukes. Interment was in Holy Trinity
Cemetery in Protivin. Pallbearers were:
Virgil Lukes, Merlin Andera, Jack
Kostohryz, Gary Guertin, Fred Walter,
and Marvin Praska.
Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled
the arrangements.
Evelyn, 86, died Tuesday, July 12,
2005 at the Cresco Care Center in
Cresco.
Evelyn was born in Cresco, Iowa on
August 12, 1918. Her parents were
William J. and Rose (Koudelka) Lukes.
She received her education at the rural
school near her home. She worked as a
sales clerk at various Cresco
businesses, including Harrison's and
Zbornik Grocery.
Evelyn married Frank C. Wendl on
August 7, 1943 in Denver, CO.
She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.
She would keep the stats of the games
and liked to share them with others
after the games. Evelyn enjoyed baking
especially cookies. She was an outdoors
person, enjoyed yard work and gardening.
She kept a very clean house and liked to
do the cleaning. While Frank was still
living, she would sing along with him as
he played an instrument. Evelyn liked
her family to visit and spend time with
them.
Evelyn was a member of Notre Dame
Parish and its Rosary Society.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her
husband: Frank on November 3, 1978; her
parents; three brothers: Louis, Raymond,
and Leonard Lukes; and her three
sisters: Irene Praska, Grace Kostohryz,
and Caroline Pecinovsky.
