Robert Melvold

A memorial service for Robert T. Melvold of Maquoketa was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 4, 2005 at First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, IA.

Visitation was held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 3 at the church and from 9:30 a.m. to service time Friday, also at the church. In accordance with his wishes, his body was donated to science at the University of Iowa Medical School.

Robert, 87, died Friday night, October 28, 2005 in the extended care unit of Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Robert Thomson Melvold was born August 22, 1918 in Cresco, IA to Clarence Melvold and Mae Thomson Melvold. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1936 He attended Luther College in Decorah for one year, then transferred to the University of Iowa, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism in 1940. After receiving his degree he entered the U.S. Navy's V-7 officer training program in July 1940, graduating as an ensign. He spent the following five and one half years in the Navy, most of that time in the Pacific Theater of World War II. He attained the rank of lieutenant commander during the latter stages of the war and commanded his own ship with the amphibious landing forces on Okinawa and in the occupation of Japan.

On February 18, 1944 he married Frances Dale Elwood of Cresco at the U.S. Naval base in New Orleans, LA. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Iowa, where he took a job as news editor of the Glenwood, IA Opinion-Tribune semiweekly newspaper. On May 1, 1946 he and Frances purchased the Maquoketa Community Press, one of two weekly newspapers serving Maquoketa at the time. He purchased the competing Jackson Sentinel on January 1, 1952 and merged them as twin weekly newspapers. He later consolidated them into a semiweekly, renamed the Maquoketa Sentinel-Press. He represented only the third family to publish the Sentinel since its founding as one of Iowa's oldest newspapers in 1854.

The Sentinel-Press became one of the first newspapers in Iowa to convert from the "hot metal" method of printing to photo offset when it also moved into a newly-built plant at its present location at 108 W. Quarry Street in January of 1965. In 1954 he purchased the DeWitt Observer, which he and Frances currently co-owned. In 1968 he and Bob Parrott, his partner at the DeWitt Observer, founded the Eldridge North Scott Press. He also formerly owned the Galena, IL Gazette and the Bellevue Herald-Leader and Eastern Iowa Printing Co., later Tri-State Graphics. He retired as publisher of the Sentinel-Press in February 1987, but remained active in the business. He continued to write his weekly column, "Random Observations" until his death.

He received many honors and awards during his career. In 1970, he received the Master Editor-Publisher Award from the Iowa Newspaper Association, the highest honor given by that organization of his peers. His newspapers won many state and national awards for news coverage, commentary, advertising and community service. He was a longtime member of the Maquoketa Area Chamber of Commerce, the only person to serve four terms as chamber president. He was a member of the Maquoketa Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and a past president. He served several years as chairman of the Industrial Development Commission that brought about the city's present industrial park, was chairman of Maquoketa's first Planning and Zoning Commission and served on many other boards and committees. He was active in the Maquoketa United Church of Christ. He had a strong interest in American history, particularly the Civil War era and the life of U.S. Grant.

He enjoyed fishing on the Mississippi River and on northern Wisconsin lakes, golf and bridge. He was a lifelong advocate for freedom of the press and for conservation causes.

Survivors include his wife; three sons: Douglas, John (and Mary McAllister) and R.B. (and Beth), all of Maquoketa; three daughters: Miriam (Mrs. Bill) Brown and Annette (Mrs. Kelvin) Sohl, both of Maquoketa, and Janis (Mrs. David Pesetsky) Melvold of Lexington, MA; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother: Regina Melvold; and one brother: John, in infancy.


LaVonne Keune

Funeral services for LaVonne Keune of Cresco were held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco with Pastor Jack Gannett officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were: Gay Zidlicky and family, Bill and Marian Fishbaugher, Billy Walker, Norris and Virginia Larson and family, Lester Johnson, Bob and Bernice Davidson, and Arnie and Wilma Bigalk. Pallbearers were: Duane Borgan, Terry Borgan, Thom Davis, Larry Fenske, Lance Johnson, Jerry Moen, and Gary Zidlicky. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery in rural Cresco.

LaVonne, 80, died Sunday, October 30, 2005 at the Regional Health Services in Cresco.

Geneva LaVonne (Borgan) Keune was born on July 4, 1925 in Fillmore County, MN on the farm. Her parents were Lena Borgan (Hovey) and Tollef A. Borgan. She was baptized and confirmed at Saetersdal Lutheran Church, where she attended and taught Sunday and Bible School, sang in the choir and participated in Luther League. LaVonne attended a country school named Hovey, and worked on the farm until moving to Cresco and waitressing at the Cresco Caf/.

On September 12, 1950, LaVonne married Burdette Keune of Cresco at Saetersdal Church. They joined First Lutheran Church of Cresco where she continued to be active in the church teaching Sunday and Bible School, as well as being involved in circle and WELCO. She was a Camp Fire Girl and Boy Scout leader for years and also helped with 4-H. LaVonne was a member of the Hospital and American Legion Auxiliary.

LaVonne was a very good seamstress, quilter, and knitter, she also loved to cook and bake and share the goodies with friends and neighbors. Doughnuts that mom made and Homecoming went together at the Keunes.

LaVonne enjoyed working in the garden and yard with her husband and kids. She remained very active as long as her health permitted.

LaVonne was a wonderful sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend.

LaVonne is survived by two daughters: Cynthia of Livermore, CA and Sandra (Lynn) Montague of Waverly, IA; one son: Arden (Brenda) Keune of Sioux Rapids, IA; one granddaughter: Mackenzie; one sister: Hazel Davis of Cresco, IA; one brother: Gaylord (Patsy) Borgan of Lime Springs, IA; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Burdette; her parents; two brothers: Olaf and Foster; and two nieces: Gloria Johnson and Kay Sobolik.


Agnes Falada

Mass of Christian Burial for Agnes Falada of Spillville, IA was held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Organist was Jeanette Dietzenbach, Dan Silhacek was soloist and the St. Wenceslaus Choir also sang. Lectors were Marion Henry and Diane Baker. Euchristic ministers were Clara Pecinovsky and Marion Henry. Offertory was carried by Marie Balk and Clara Pecinovsky. Pallbearers were all of Agnes' grandchildren. Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in rural Spillville.

Agnes, 96, died Monday, October 31, 2005 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, IA after a long illness.

Agnes Eleanor (Schileny) Falada was born on July 11, 1909 the daughter of Alois and Lena (Pechota) Schilney near Little Turkey, IA on the family farm. Agnes attended country school near the farm.

Agnes married John Falada on October 4, 1927 at Assumption Catholic Church in Little Turkey. Together they farmed north of Spillville until November 1, 1991, when she moved to the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Agnes enjoyed baking, crocheting, going to dances and listening to polkas and waltzes. She taught her grandchildren and great and great - great grandchildren to play the card game "31" and especially enjoyed family gatherings.

Agnes' survivors include two daughters: Marie Balk of Decorah, IA and Clara (Lawrence) Pecinovsky of Elma, IA; one son: Stanley Falada of Decorah, IA; 11 grandchildren: Marion (Joseph) Henry, Ronald (Mary Lou) Balk, Virginia (Larry) Gehling, Diane (Dennis) Baker, Alan (Annette) Balk, Lori Falada, Susan (Jeff) Hazard, Jane Falada, Tom Falada, Gerald (Jolynn) Pecinovsky and Joan (Dennis) Best; 14 great grandchildren: Michael (Lynnette) Henry, Craig (Tricia) Henry, Steven (Jenny) Henry, Christine (James) Boehmler, Daniel Balk (fianc/e Melissa Weathermon), Nicholas Balk, William (Janice) Baker, David Baker, (fianc/e Marea Wickman), Jewell (Brian) Pahl, Bruce Balk, Thomas Hazard, Elizabeth Hazard, Levi Best and Izaack Best; eight great-great-grandchildren: Anthony Henry, Danielle Henry, Logan Henry, Mason Henry, Blake Henry, Sarah Baker, Josiah Baker and Kaylee Baker.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Falada, October 29, 1991; one brother: Richard Schileny; one sister: Mayme Houdek; one son-in-law: Tony Balk; one grandson: James Falada; one great-great-grandson: Isaiah Baker.

Joe Schemmel

Funeral services for Joe Schemmel were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 7 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Richard Ament and Rev. Dave Lusson officiating.

The family placed the pall on the casket. Gift bearers were Sadie and Spencer Bohr and Regan Conlan. Pallbearers were his grandchildren. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday and on Monday at the church an hour prior to services. There was a Scripture Service at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Joe, 81, died Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco, IA where he has lived since May of 2005.

Joseph John Schemmel was born in Howard County, IA on January 24, 1924, the son of Edward and Anna (Lusson) Schemmel. He attended school at St. Joseph's Grade School and stayed on the farm to help his father farm.

On January 24, 1946, Joe married Imogene Hayes in the Assumption Church in Canton, MN. They set up farming on Joe's home farm and raised their five children.

Joe was a member of St. Joseph's Church, (now Notre Dame Parish), a former member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Howard County Farm Bureau. At one time, Joe was very active in all of the memberships he held, he was on the finance committee when St. Joseph's Elementary School was built. Joe spent his

life farming, but his real life was his family. He thoroughly loved his grandchildren and waited patiently for their next visit.

Joe raised White Park Cattle, was also a dairyman, milking cows until his stroke and saw best to participate in the dairy buy-out.

Joe didn't spend all of his time working, he enjoyed playing euchre and five hundred, and he enjoyed playing a dice game called "Zilch". In earlier years, he and Imogene liked to go dancing, he enjoyed polka music and he was a sports fan as long as one of the teams were the Hawkeyes, the Packers or the Cincinnati Reds. Joe liked to eat, and one of his favorite meals was fresh catfish. And in later years, he had his dog "Bullet" with him by his side.

Joe is survived by his wife of almost 60 years; two sons: Kenneth of Savannah, GA and Robert of Woodbine, GA; three daughters: Sheri (Mike) Conlan of Cresco, Cindy (Larry) Kostohryz of Cresco, and Carol Bohr of St. Paul, MN; 13 grandchildren: Michael (Mia) and Brian (Vicky) Schemmel, Derek, Garrett, Nicholas and Tyler Schemmel, Pat, Regan and Ryan Conlan, Scott and Chad Kostohryz, and Sadie and Spencer Bohr; three step grandchildren: Randy, Robby and Ryan Enger; two great-grandchildren: Clayton and Landon Schemmel ; and one step great-grandchild: Logan Enger; and two sisters: Mary Ann (Bud) Billmyer of Cresco, and Agnes (Robert) Rima of Decorah, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter: Heidi Schemmel; one brother: Kenneth; and one sister: Dorothy Dusheck.


Evaline Fulcher

Funeral services for Evaline M. Fulcher of Cresco were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8 at Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday. There was a Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Scripture Service at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. There was also visitation for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Evaline, 91, died Saturday, November 5, 2005 in Winneshiek County, Iowa from injuries received in an auto accident.

Evaline Mary Fulcher was born on August 5, 1914 near Lake City, MN, the daughter of Fred and Jenny (Hall) Schmauss. She attended school in the rural schools of Minnesota. As a young girl, the family moved and she finished her education in the rural schools of Iowa. As the times demanded, all young ladies needed to work, and Evaline helped families in the Lime Springs and Cresco area with all of their household and farm chores.

In 1933, she married Albert C. Taylor at her mother's home near Lime Springs, IA. They started farming as a young couple until Albert's untimely death in 1947. On November 17, 1954 she married Raymond Fulcher in Cresco. They made their home on the farm until 1959 when she and Ray moved into Cresco. Evaline continued to keep herself busy even after moving to town. She continued papering and painting, just as she helped her mother in earlier years.

Evaline was a member of the Assumption Worship Center and the Family Circles of Faith. She enjoyed fishing and going to garage sales and auctions.

She is survived by her children: Betty (Kenneth) Shea of Lime Springs, IA, Patrick (Connie) Taylor of Cresco, Elenor (Jerry) Wubben of Clear Lake, IA, and Tom (Doris) Taylor of Stevens Point, WI; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Frederick (Fern) Schmauss and Arnold (Dorothy) Schmauss, both of Cresco; one daughter-in-law: Elinor Taylor of Ionia, IA; and sister-in-law: Bernice Schmauss of Cresco.

Evaline was preceded in death by parents; her husband: Albert Taylor in 1947; her husband: Ray Fulcher in 1999; one son: Rodney Taylor; one daughter: Shirley Mae; two sisters: Harriet Hertges and her twin sister: Evangeline McIntire; and two brothers: Lester and Francis Schmauss.


Walter Carolan

Funeral services for Walter W. "Toad" Carolan of Missouri Valley, IA were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 14 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Council Bluffs.

Walter, 57, died Friday, November 11, 2005 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley.


Lloyd Bergan

Funeral services for Lloyd E. Bergan of Ridgeway were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2005 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway with Rev. Philip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

Organist was Judy Hovden with congregational hymns "Rock of Ages", I Know of a Sleep in Jesus Name", and "Abide with Me" being sung. Pallbearers were his six grandchildren: Jason Bergan, Terry Bergan, Nathan Hendrickson, Heather Kincade, Linda Nesvik, and Cindy Nesvik.

Visitation was held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Thursday at the church. Interment was in United Lutheran Cemetery in rural Ridgeway.

Lloyd, 97, died Sunday, November 6, 2005 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah following a brief illness.

Lloyd Earl Bergan was born July 2, 1908 at home in Madison Township, Winneshiek County, IA, the son of Nels and Elena (Larson) Bergan. He attended the rural schools of Madison Township. Lloyd was baptized in 1908 and confirmed on November 12, 1922 at Ridgeway United Lutheran Church.

Lloyd was born and raised on the family farm which was started in 1883. During the Great Depression Lloyd and his brother traveled to Little Rock, CA where they put in irrigation pipes and worked in orchards for several people including Noel and Wallace Berry. Upon his father's death in 1934, Lloyd returned to Madison Township where he assumed the responsibilities of running the family farm. He had a thrashing machine which he often used to help all the neighbors with their thrashing until 1969. Lloyd was always willing to help his friends and neighbors.

On February 9, 1940 Lloyd was united in marriage with Jeanette Halverson in Decorah, IA. To this union four children were born: Roger, Carol, Lorraine and Jane.

Lloyd was a very active member of Ridgeway United Lutheran Church, then Peace Lutheran Church. He served on the council and was treasurer, as well as serving on the Cemetery Board. He was a member of Farm Bureau and NFO.

He became a resident of the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah in July 2004.

LaVerne Koster

Funeral mass for LaVerne L. Koster of Lime Springs, IA, formerly of Chester were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Chester, IA with Father Ray Atwood officiating.

Visitation was held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy, MN and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. There was a prayer service at 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Interment was in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in LeRoy, MN.

LaVerne, 88, died Friday, November 18, 2005 at his home.

LaVerne L. Koster was born on April 20, 1917 in Manson, IA to William Koster and Veronica (Miller) Koster. He attended school through the sixth grade and after his mothers death, at the age of 14 was on his own. He started working for local farmers and in 1954 he moved to the Chester, IA area and started farming on his own.

On September 16, 1954 he was united in marriage to Ilona M. Britt in Parkers Prarie, MN.

In the fall of 1963 he purchased the John Deere Dealership in Lime Springs, IA and in 1972 he moved the business to Davis Corners. After selling the John Deere business he started selling Toxwik and MC Grain Dryers. After retirement LaVerne and Ilona moved to Lime Springs, IA.

LaVerne was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Chester, IA for over 50 years, he was a member of the local card club and enjoyed playing pool, visiting, going to the farm and eating supper at Laddy's.

LaVerne is survived by nine children: Larry Koster of Chester, IA, Kay (Jerry) Pisney of Lake City, MN, Vernon Koster of Lime Springs, IA, Lonnie (Sherry) Koster of Chanhassen, MN, John (Pam) Koster of Rochester, MN, Ron (Barb) Koster of Stewartville, MN, Vicki (Randy) McCloud of LeRoy, MN, Mark (Starla) Koster of Bethune, CO, and Tresea "Tootie" Huntley of Chester, IA; 19 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Millie Tiernan of Lancaster, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Ilona in 2004; one son: Donald; and a grandson: Trevor.


John Fritcher

Funeral services for John "Jack" W. Fritcher of Lime Springs, IA will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville with Rev. Dan Christensen officiating.

Friends were to call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home on Tuesday during the hours of 5:00-8:00 p.m., and on Wednesday morning before services. Interment will be in Saratoga Cemetery in Saratoga, IA.

John, 88, died Monday, November 21, 2005 at the Riceville Community Rest Home in Riceville.

John Wells Fritcher was born on September 14, 1917 to John Webster and Mozelle DeMoss (Wells) Fritcher in Mitchell County, west of Mitchell, Iowa. He attended local schools.

On April 14, 1940 "Jack" was united in marriage to Ruth Loden in Northwood, Iowa. "Jack" was a farmer in the Lime Springs area until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; two sons: John E. "Butch" and his wife Beverly of Lime Springs, and Robert J. "Pete" also of Lime Springs; two daughters: JoAnn and her husband Dennis Fox of Rochester, MN and Janet and her husband Leroy Dahlke of Riceville; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother: Tom Fritcher of Lime Springs and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two daughters: Barbara Jean and Ruth Ann; a brother: Dick Fritcher; and a sister: Lula Hahn.


Ione Benson

A Mass of Christian Burial for Ione G. Benson of Postville was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 15 at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville.

Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.

Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville handled the arrangements.

Ione, 89, died Saturday, November 12, 2005 in the Ossian Senior Hospice at Ossian.
