Eileen Wilkins

Funeral services for Eileen Wilkins of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 28 at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Bluffton with Rev. Linus Rasing officiating.

Interment was in St. Benedict's Catholic Cemetery in Decorah. Pallbearers were: John Sexton, Sheil Courtney, David Sexton, Shane Courtney, Patrick Sexton, and Shelby Courtney. Schluter-Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Eileen, 90, died Friday, February 25, 2005 at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah following a long illness.

Eileen M. Wilkins was born October 22, 1914 in Bluffton, the daughter of William P. and Mary (Curran) Sexton. Eileen graduated from Decorah High school in 1932. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College and graduated in 1936 with a Kindergarten-Primary Education Degree. She also received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1936. She taught in Fort Dodge, Whiting and Clear Lake. During World War II, she taught American military children stationed in Germany. While in Germany, she met Edward Wilkins who was also teaching. They returned to California and were married in 1950. She lived and taught school in Long Beach, CA until 1975, when she moved back to Decorah to live on the family farm. She entered the Barthell Eastern Star Home in January 1997.

She enjoyed sewing and studying her family's genealogy and she also recorded the history of St. Bridget's Cemetery in Bluffton.

Eileen was a member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America.

She is survived by one granddaughter.

Eileen was preceded in death by one son: Benjamin; her parents; two sisters: Ruth in infancy and Rosemyra Fletcher; and two brothers: William and Francis.


Anna Kuennen

Funeral services for Anna Kuennen of Lawler were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 25 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

Anna's grandchildren placed the pall. Interment was in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church Cemetery in Lawler. Pallbearers were: Lauren Kuehner, Daryl Kuehner, Jodi Kuennen, Stacy Kuennen, Annie Stephan, Jon Reeg, and Dave Kempf. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Anna, 89, died Monday, February 21, 2005 at the New Hampton Care Center where she had become a resident in August of 2002.

Anna M. Kuennen was born February 3, 1916 near St. Lucas, the daughter of Nicholas and Catherine (Hackman) Kuehner. She attended school at St. Lukes Catholic School in St. Lucas.

On February 14, 1939 she married Raymond J. Kuennen at St. Lukes Church. They moved to a farm south of Lawler. Raymond died March 5, 2002.

She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, going on bus tours, and playing Bingo. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church of Lawler.

She is survived by one son: Virgil of Charles City; one daughter: Madonna Stephan of Iowa City; five granddaughters; two great-grandsons; and one sister: Sr. Rose Catherine Kuehner of LaCrosse, WI.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband Raymond; one son: Robert; one granddaughter; her parents; three brothers: Will, Carl, and Leonard; and five sisters: Sr. Nicollette Kuehner, Sr. Cyrene Kuehner, Elizabeth Kuennen, Teresa Winter, and Josephine Kuehner in infancy.


Paul Hoffman

Funeral services for Paul Hoffman of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 23 at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center in New Hampton with Monsignor Carl Schmitt officiating.

The pall was placed by his six children. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton. Pallbearers were: Matt Gebel, Jim Gebel, Tony Gebel, Mitchell Whitney, Justin Denner and Craig Denner. Honorary pallbearers were: Nina Hoffman, Marissa Whitney, Michaela Whitney, and Mindy Hall. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Paul, 79, died Sunday, February 20, 2005 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Paul Francis Hoffman was born December 26, 1925 in New Hampton, the son of Henry and Marie (Cole) Hoffman. He attended rural country school and St. Joseph Community School in New Hampton. He graduated from the New Hampton High School in 1943. On January 8, 1945 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, Paul was inducted into the United States Army and was honorably discharge on November 27, 1946.

In April of 1958 he married Marie Hueneke in Waterloo. Paul initially worked as a postal carrier and then as a clerk at the New Hampton Post Office until retiring in 1987. Marie died October 1, 1973. In September of 1993 he married Marge Edson at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Hampton.

He spent many years caring for the planting trees in the family owned property near New Hampton, (Bigelow's Woods).

He is survived by his wife Marge; four sons: Steve of Lawler, Bruce of New Hampton, Brian of Cedar Falls, and Bill of New Hampton; two daughters: Sharon Denner of Waverly and Sue Whitney of Waverly; six grandchildren; 23 step grandchildren; 29 step great-grandchildren; and one brother: Merle of Marshalltown.

Paul was preceded in death by his first wife; his parents; and two brothers: Clarence and Gerald.


Olaf Johnson

Funeral services for Olaf Johnson of Elma were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 26 at the Jerico Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jerico with Rev. Kent Dethlefsen officiating.

Interment was in the Jerico Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery in Jerico. Pallbearers were: James Johnson, Charles Johnson, Gary Johnson, Kenny Rinken, Wayne Johnson, and Paul L. Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were: Charles Johnson, Andrew Geerts, Merle Rochford, and Donald Shatek. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Olaf, 89, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Olaf Carlyle Johnson was born March 7, 1915 on a farm northwest of Jerico, the son of Joe and Carrie (Northness) Johnson. He attended country school near his family's home. After his schooling, Olaf worked on the family farm and later worked as a hired hand for area farmers.

On December 16, 1941, he married Marjorie C. Attleson at the Crane Creek Parsonage. They farmed in Chickasaw County and later Howard County. He retired from farming in 1984, but continued to raise cattle and horses for one more year. He was currently residing on the farm.

He was a lifelong member of the Jerico Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He is survived by one sister: Josephine Marik of Cresco; and one brother Lester of New Hampton.

Olaf was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie on October 8, 1984; his parents; one brother: Alvie; and one sister: Alice Landswerk.


Lyle Hart

Memorial services for Lyle Hart of Elma will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 2 at the Elma United Methodist Church.

Inurnment will be in the Howard Cemetery in Elma. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Lyle, 81, died Sunday, February 27, 2005 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Lyle Edward Hart was born July 10, 1923 at Alta Vista, the son of A.J. "Butch" and Jennie (Bigley) Hart. He graduated from the Elma Public High School in 1941. On March 17, 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during WWII as a Machinists Mate R 1st Class on the USS Kephart from its christening until it was put into the mothball fleet on the St. John's River. Lyle was honorably discharged on March 20, 1946. Following his discharge Lyle attended Lawrence University at Lawrence, KS and later Upper Iowa University in Fayette.

On June 8, 1952, he married JoyceElaine Hopkins at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Elma. They made their home in Elma. Lyle ran a Skelgas business in Elma for a short time and then went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in Elma as the Rural Route 2 carrier for 33 years.

He served on the Howard County Veterans Affairs Commission from 1972 until present, Howard Cemetery Board, and was a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Elma, and a member of the Elma American Legion, Alta Vista VFW, Order of the Easter Star and 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge. The couple was a member of the Holiday Ramblers Recreational Vehicle Club from October 1969 to present. They traveled the United States and Canada with the club and he received the Prestigious Hitchball and Ambassador Awards from the HRRVC. Lye and his wife wrote a column "Happiness is a Holiday" for the club's newsletter for 15 years. He enjoyed traveling and was able to visit 50 states.

He is survived by his wife JoyceElaine; one son: Scott of Decorah; one daughter: Heidi Kessler of Chicago, IL; and two grandchildren.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Dale.

George Zeien

Funeral services for George Zeien of North Washington were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington with Monsignor John Hemann officiating.

His wife, daughters and granddaughter placed the pall. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in North Washington. Pallbearers were: Gerald Reiss, William Jenn, Roger Ries, Gary Papenheim, Dennis Staudt, and Norman Zeien. Honorary pallbearers were: Richard Scully and Ralph Evans. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

George, 89, died Thursday, March 3, 2005 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

George Thomas Zeien was born November 5, 1915 in rural Chickasaw County near North Washington, the son of George and Catherine (Bach) Zeien. He attended school at St. Mary's School in North Washington.

On May 22, 1946, he married Anna Reiss at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington. They farmed on the same farm south of North Washington from 1948 until retiring in 1972. He became a resident of the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on July 4, 2003.

He enjoyed playing cards and Bingo as well as collecting stamps.

He is survived by his wife Anna; two daughters: Linda Schmickle of Independence and Phyllis Kombol of Kannapolis, NC; and two grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters: Anna Zeien, Elizabeth Blocker, Mary Jenn, and Susan Staudt; and two brothers: John and Jacob.


Carol Kach

Funeral services for Carol Kach of Harmony, MN were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5 at Immaculate Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Michael Massa officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Carol, 56, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at the Harmony Health Care in Harmony.

Carol Jean Kach was born February 1, 1949 in Cresco, the daughter of Paul and Sena (Jacobson) Huhe. She attended schools in Ridgeway and Cresco, graduating from Crestwood High School in 1967.

On October 9, 1971, she married LaVerne Kach in Cresco. They moved to Harmony. Carol Jean worked at the Town House Restaurant for 29 years and more recently the Harmony House for the past two years.

She is survived by her husband LaVerne of Harmony; one brother: Harold of Cresco; and one sister: Paulette Dixon of Moorhead, MN.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents.


Rosemarie Baltes

Rosemarie Baltes, 90, of New Hampton died Saturday, March 5, 2005 at the New Hampton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in New Hampton.

There will be private family inurnment services at St. Mary's Cemetery in New Hampton at a later date. There will be no services or visitation. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Rosemarie Baltes was born May 10, 1914 at New Hampton, the daughter of Gregory and Hazel (Strike) Sheehy. She graduated from New Hampton High School in 1932.

She married Ralph Baltes and they moved to Waterloo. She worked as a clerk in medical records in Waterloo for a number of years. She lived in Waterloo following Ralph's death and later moved back to New Hampton, where she became a resident of the New Hampton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center for almost 10 years.

She is survived by two brothers: Joseph of New Hampton and Greg of Hinkley, MN; and one sister: Clara Mae Kruse of Monona.

Rosemarie was preceded in death by her husband Ralph; her parents; six brothers: Maurice, Edward, Keith, Gerald, Wallace, and Ralph; and two sisters: Delephine Reilly and Shirley Todd.


Loretta Gansen

Funeral services for Loretta Gansen were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8 at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Chester with Rev. Ray E. Atwood and Rev. Robert Ament officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Elma. Honorary pallbearers were: Bob Miller, Jim Kitchen, Gene Pisney, Roger Lepa, Greg Lichty, and Leland Truka. Pallbearers were: David Gansen, Richard Gansen, Kenny Gansen, Brian Bronner, Dean Gansen, Roger Gansen, James Gansen, and Bill Gansen. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Loretta, 98, died Friday, March 4, 2005 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Mary Loretta Gansen was born November 30, 1906 in Elma, the daughter of James and Amanda (Weakland) Richardson. She attended rural school through the eighth grade. She did housecleaning for the Elwood family and others in the area.

On January 31, 1928, she married William Laverne Gansen. They rented a farm place near Elma until about 1937, then they moved to the Lou Maronde farm northeast of Lime Springs for five years. In 1941 they purchased the present farm and moved onto it in 1942. They made this their home until they moved in the Cresco Care Center in October of 2004.

She was a member of St. Stephens Church. She enjoyed dancing, bowling and fishing. She and Bill bowled up into their 90's.

She is survived by three sons: Donald of Clear lake, Robert of Rochester, MN, and James of Stanchfield, MN; one daughter: Lois Bronner of Lime Springs; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Loretta was preceded in death by her husband William; one son: Dale; one grandson; her parents; and three brothers: Arthur, Charles, and Raymond.


Steven Foster

Funeral services for Steven Foster of Riceville were held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 5 at the Riceville High School Gymnasium with Rev. Michael Carey and Rev. Dan Christensen officiating.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Steven, 55, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN from injuries received in a car accident.

Steven C. Foster was born February 21, 1950 in Riceville, the son of Curtis and Mary (Aspel) Foster. He attended Riceville schools and upon graduation attended two years of trade school at Calmar. He served his country during the Vietnam War. Steven worked for the Riceville Community Schools in maintenance and as a custodian.

On September 16, 1978, he married Deborah Huisman at the St. Ansgar Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Deb; one daughter: Terri of Riceville; his mother: Mary of Riceville; two brothers: Mark of Elma and Greg of Riceville; and two sisters: Karen Owens of Tripoli and Lynne Derry of New Hampton; and special family: Alicia and Nathan Kinter of Riceville.

Steven was preceded in death by his father; and grandparents.


Genevieve Heins

Funeral services for Genevieve Heins of Riceville were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 4 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville with Rev. Michael Parris officiating.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Genevieve died Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at Riceville Community Rest Home in Riceville.

Genevieve Opal Heins was born September 19, 1910 in Hampton, the daughter of Franklin and Pearl (Blain) Foughty. She attended Hampton schools.

On October 15, 1927, she married Harry Louis Heins at the Methodist Parsonage in Mason City. They started farming in 1929. They were devoted members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville since 1937 where Gen taught Sunday School and bible classes for many years.

She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting and planting flowers. She and her daughter Barbara started the Flowerette Club in 1952 raising over 500 different varieties of iris. She also raised all kinds of daylilies. Gen sponsored a child in Mexico and contributed to the translation of the bible from English to Indian for a mission in the Canadian northwest territory.

She is survived by her children: Lois Thompto of Manly, Wayne of Cedar Falls, Barbara Austinson of Osage, and Harry Jr. of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband Harry in December of 2003; her parents; three brothers: Blain, Gerald, and Verald; and one sister in infancy.


Clara Bayer

Funeral services for Clara Bayer of Elma were held at 12:00 noon on Monday, March 7 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Monsignor John Hemann and Rev. John Meinholz officiating.

Interment was in New Hampton Cemtery in New Hampton. Pallbearers were: Tom Nielsen, Tim Nielsen, Ron Bayer, Don Bayer, Richard Newhouse, Lynn Newhouse, Barbara Braun, and Brian King. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Clara, 94, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. She had been living at Colonial Manor Nursing Home since April of 2000.

Clara Margaret Bayer was born in Breda, the daughter of Leo and Anna (Lengling) Thiele. She graduated eighth grade from Our lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic School in Breda. She moved with her family at the age of 15 to Howard County. As a young woman, she worked for several families in Elma, Riceville, Osage, and Cresco as a mother's helper. As the Elma Hospital was preparing to open, Clara was hired to sew all of the needed linens and curtains. She played the piano by ear, and accompanied by her father on the fiddle, played for many wedding dances.

On May 23, 1935, she married George Bayer at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma. After a few years in Waterloo and Elma, they took over the Bayer farm northeast of Elma. While on the farm, Clara maintained a large garden, canning most of its produce. She as known for her excellent bread and other baked goods and was an active member of the Merry Makers Homemaker Club. In 1964, they moved to town for their retirement years.

She became very interested in genealogy. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Elma Senior Citizens, serving as local historian and photographer for both organizations. They were also members of the Howard County WWI Veterans Group. Her other interests were sewing for the missions through the Altar and Rosary Society of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, making quilts and learning to drive a car at age 65. She once placed an ad in Country Woman Magazine looking for a few Santa Claus cards to complete a book she was making. She received over 2,000 cards from all over the world.

She is survived by nine children: Roger of Milwaukee, WI, Melvin of East Dubuque, IL, Mary Ann Nielsen of Lake Mills, WI, Elaine Newhouse of Lake Mills, WI, Loren of Apple Valley, CA, Marlene Honaker of Waterloo, Lois Mills of Sandusky, OH, LaVonne Bayer of Madison, WI, and Vern of Beloit, WI; 27 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and four brothers: Lawrence of Phoenix, AZ, Leo of Austin, MN, Henry of Phoenix, AZ, and Harold of Elma.

Clara was preceded in death by her husband George on December 2, 1993; her parents; an infant sister: Leona; and two brothers: Carl and Joe.


Ellen Porter

Funeral services for Ellen Porter of Cresco were held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 5 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Michael Massa officiating.

Interment was in Kendallville-Eddy Cemetery in Kendallville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ellen, 92, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Ellen Elizebeth Anna Curtis Porter was born April 13, 1912 on a farm seven miles west of Cresco. She was baptized at St. Marten's Lutheran Church at Davis Corners. As an infant her family moved to a farm four miles northeast of Cresco. She received her education in rural schools of Orleans Township and later graduated from Cresco High School in 1930. She was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Cresco.

On April 20, 1932, she married Earl Curtis at Immanuel Lutheran Church and they farmed north of Cresco and for 20 years on a farm near Kendallville. In 1959, they retired to Cresco. In 1961 and 1962, they spent time with the Peace Corp in Brazil. Her husband Earl passed away in 1967.

In June of 1970, she married Orville F. Porter at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. They lived in Cresco until Orville passed away in 1989. She entered the Cresco Care Center in September 2004.

She enjoyed playing cards and traveling. She also was a longtime 4-H leader. For several years she assisted with the hot lunch program at Cresco High School.

She is survived by one daughter: Elaine Steffen of Cresco; one son: Charles of Kendallville; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Ellen was preceded in death by her two husbands; her parents; one sister: Christina Powers; four brothers: Harry, Edward, Orville, and Carl; and three brothers and sisters who died in infancy.


Arden Anderson

Funeral services for Arden Anderson of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 4 at the Madison Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Rev. Phil Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

Interment was in Madison Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Decorah. Honorary pallbearers were: Alex and Shirley Schmitt, Phil and Ellen Ryan, Jerry and Bev McEaney, Bob and Kathy McIntyre, Dick and Joyce Stork, Alan and Carrie McIntyre, LaVonne and Clair Borseth, Slim and Chuckie Gilbertson, John and Barb Headington, Dave Malek and Joyce Langreck, Roger and Carmen Hovden, Floyd and Alberta Friederich, and Arnie and Janet Fortman. Pallbearers were: Chad Mehl, Jason Mehl, Joel Graves, Greg Iverson, Gary Bakken, Kerry Langreck, Kraig Langreck, and Brandon Anderson. Schluter-Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Arden, 69, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN following a short illness.

Arden John Anderson was born September 12, 1935 in Madison Township, the son of Leon Orlando and Tinka Christine (Haaland) Anderson. He attended country school in Madison Township and Decorah Community Schools. Arden served in the US Army during the Korean conflict. He returned to Decorah and farmed with his father.

On August 6, 1960, he married Sharon Iverson at the Big Canoe Lutheran Church. They farmed in Madison Township and Arden sold Vigortone Feeds. He retired from farming in 1990, but continued to keep busy by working at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home, Homecare Helping Hands and at Anderson Auto.

Arden was a member of the Madison Lutheran Church and the Helof - Holm VFW Chapter #1977.

He is survived by his wife Sharon of Decorah; three sons: John of Decorah, Lee of Waukon, and Troy of Ridgeway; seven grandchildren; three sisters: Darla Bakken of Decorah, Sylvie Lundeen of Bloomington, MN, and Rosemary Mehl of Coon Rapids, MN; and one brother: Terry of Cameron, MO.

Arden was preceded in death by his parents.

Agatha Swancutt

Funeral services for Agatha Swancutt of Chester were held on Saturday, February 5 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Chester with Father Ray Atwood officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Austin, MN.

Agatha, 87, died Thursday, February 3, 2005 at her home of natural causes.

Agatha Frances Swancutt was born August 20, 1917, the daughter of Lambert and Anna (Theobold) Weis. She attended school in the Adams area through the eighth grade.

On February 25, 1939, she married Murl Swancutt. They farmed near Chester .

She was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Chester.

She is survived by three sons: Mern of Chester, Delano of LeRoy, MN, and Mark of Chester; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Agatha was preceded in death by her husband Murl; one son: Darwin; her parents; six brothers; and five sisters.


Gladys Natvig

Funeral services for Gladys Natvig were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 12 at the Saude Evangelical Lutheran Church in Saude.

Interment was in Saude Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Gladys, 87, died Monday, March 7, 2005 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco following a brief severe illness. She was a long time resident of the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Gladys Sylvia Martha Natvig was born February 14, 1918, the daughter of Herman and Elizabeth (Linnemann) Drewelow. The family farmed near Boyd, in Chickasaw County. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church of Boyd. She attended school through eighth grade, but due to frequent illness was deemed not strong enough to attend high school. She began work in homes caring for families and bedfast mothers with newborn babies.

On June 18, 1937, she married Carlyle E. Natvig at St. John's Lutheran Church in Boyd. They farmed their entire lives on a Natvig family farm in northern Chickasaw County, near the community of Saude.

She was well known for her abundant flowers about the farm and house yards, plus her enormous strawberry patch and garden. She raised ducks, geese, and chickens processing them for gifts and selling. As at home on a tractor as she was in the house, family members fondly recall her cooking skills and special treats.

Gladys was a member of the Saude Lutheran congregation, serving the Ladies Aid Association in various offices over the years. She also assisted her husband with bookkeeping in the office he held at church.

She is survived by one daughter: Jean Forde; two sons: Vern C. and Mark C.; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Ruth D. Weeks, Rose Stevenson, and Isabel Brookins; and two brothers: Francis and Lyle.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Carlyle; one daughter: Carol Malek; her parents; sisters: Leonore Schuchardt, Bernice O'Chala and Eileen Bernard; brothers: Robert and Oliver in infancy.


Arlene Roesler

Funeral services for Arlene Roesler were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 10 at the Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony, MN with Rev. James Radatz officiating.

Arlene, 88, died Sunday, March 6, 2005 at the Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN due to complications from cancer surgery.

Arlene Winifred Roesler was born on November 15, 1916 in LeRoy, MN, the daughter of Frank and Emmeline (Himes) Cooper.

On March 1, 1937, she married Clifford C. Roesler. They farmed until their retirement.

She is survived by two sons: Marvin of Mt. Pleasant, TX and Kevin of Harmony; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Ella Finley and Frankie Kent.

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband Clifford; her parents; and one son: Duane.


Louisa Brewer

Funeral services for Louisa Brewer were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with Intern Paul Miller officiating.

Interment will be in New Oregon Cemetery in the spring.

Louisa, 97, died Saturday, March 12, 2005 at the Cresco Care Center.

Louisa A. Brewer was born December 4, 1907 in Lincoln Township, Winneshiek County, the daughter of John J. and Emma (Gerber) Albers. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1926.

On June 8, 1929, she married Walter J. Brewer. She worked for McGuire Produce House and later owned and operated Brewer Produce with her husband. They retired and moved to Dallas, TX in 1972. Later they moved to Cooper, TX in 1984 where her husband died. She moved back to Cresco in 1998. She became a resident at the Howard Residential Care Facility from December of 2000 until she entered the Cresco Care Center in September 2004.

Louisa was preceded in death by her husband Walter; one son: Walter John Jr.; one daughter: Thera Rita; and her parents.


Mildred Vobr

Funeral services for Mildred Vobr of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 12 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Michael Massa officiating.

Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mildred, 82, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.

Mildred Mae Vobr was born May 20, 1922 in Howard County, the daughter of Chris J. and Florene (Lewis) Blaser. She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church on December 8, 1923 and was confirmed there on April 5, 1936. She was educated in Howard County country schools and graduated from Cresco High School in 1939. She went to Luther College for summer school and taught country schools for eight years.

On March 11, 1951, she married Johnie Vobr. They farmed the home farm for two years. She enjoyed helping with chores, raising lots of chickens, and gardening. In 1953, they bought a farm and lived four miles west of Granger, MN, living there for five years. In 1958 they bought their farm just east of Cresco where she lived until she entered the Cresco Care Center on July 30, 2001.

Mildred loved to travel. She went to Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and France. Johnie and Mildred toured 48 states, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Mexico. They enjoyed fishing. She collected state spoons, cups, and saucers, and loved her garden and flowers.

She is survived by her husband Johnie; one daughter: Janelle Erickson; one son: Robert; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters: Vera Bauer and Janet Peters; and one brother: Arnold.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Marjorie Bauer and Mary Ann Vobr; and one brother: Marvin.


Evelyn Montague

Funeral services for Evelyn Montague of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 17 the St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with interment in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Friends may call at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, and at the church an hour prior to services on Thursday. There will be a Rosary at 5:15 p.m. and a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Leonard Sekora

Funeral services for Leonard F. Sekora of Cresco, formerly of Lime Springs, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 16 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with interment in the spring in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Lime Springs.

Martha Arndt

Funeral services for Martha Arndt of Riceville were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville with Rev. Michael Parris officiating.

Martha, 71, died Saturday, March 12, 2005 at the Colonial Manor in Elma.

Martha Marie Arndt was born June 19, 1933 in Riceville, the daughter of Cecil Edwin and Edna Hilda (Ehrenstein) Foote. She attended local schools.

In December of 1950 she married Joseph Roethler in New Haven. To this union a son, Michael Joseph Roethler, was born. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville.

On March 2, 1963 she married Edward Emil Arndt at St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

She is survived by one son: Michael of Waterloo; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one stepson: James Arndt of Charles City; two step daughters: Avis Ann Jarrett and Margaret Ann Brockney, both of Charles City; three step grandchildren; and one sister: Wilma Thurnau Fickess of Osage.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband Edwin in 1994; one stepson; her parents; one brother; and one sister.

Marvin Scholbrock

Funeral services for Marvin Scholbrock of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 21 at Holy Family Parish-St. Mary's Center in New Hampton with Monsignor Carl Schmitt officiating.

His wife, children, and goddaughter Brenda Panoch, placed the pall. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in New Hampton. Pallbearers were: Jim Snyder, Pete Willadsen, Vern Laures, Dale Wagoner, Jim Grove, and Norman Heit. Honorary pallbearers were: his grandchildren. Marvin, 75, died Thursday, March 17, 2005 at his home in New Hampton from complications of Multiple Sclerosis.

Marvin Joseph Scholbrock was born December 22, 1929 in Fort Atkinson, the son of Joseph Herman and Frances (Baumler) Scholbrock. He graduated from New Hampton High School in 1948. Marvin served for the United States Army in 1951 in the Korean Conflict. He received the Korean Service Medal with the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He was a member of the 9th Regiment of the 2nd Division while stationed in Korea.

On August 17, 1954, he married Lorraine Panoch at the Assumption Church in Cresco. He worked as a mechanic for Chevy agencies in the local area and went on to run his own business, Marv's Auto Clinic from 1973 to 1979. He received several professional outstanding awards as an accomplished mechanic which was his passion along with landscaping, farming, woodworking, and motorcycling. He collected toy tractors, antique guns, caps and tinkering with anything mechanical.

In 1979 he accepted a position as Street Superintendent for the City of New Hampton and retired in 1992 due to health problems.

He is survived by his wife Lorraine; two children: Marilee Mai and Joseph, both of New Hampton; seven grandchildren; and three brothers: Reuben of Cedar Rapids, Syl of Marion and Vern of Palo.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Daniel.


Alvina Buls

Funeral services for Alvina Buls of Riceville will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 23 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elma with Rev. Michael Parris officiating.

Alvina, 82, died Sunday, March 20, 2005 at her home of natural causes.

Alvina Sophia Buls was born December 23, 1922 on a farm near Riceville, the daughter of Wilhelm and Anna (Ball) Groth. She was baptized on January 21, 1923 and confirmed March 25, 1936. She received her education at the Saratoga Country School #4 and the Riceville High School.

On June 24, 1942, she married Clarence Buls at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Maple Leaf. They farmed in Howard County. She lived all but about four and one half years on this family farm.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, and walking. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School.

She is survived by her seven children: Leona Schmidt of Davenport, Lanny of Independence, Konnie Schmidt of Elma, Dean of Lime Springs, Gary of St. Cloud, MN, Verla Lensch of Lime Springs, and Edward of Riceville; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Alvina was preceded in death by her husband Clarence; one son: William in infancy; her parents; four brothers: Walter, Norbert, Erdman, and Leonard; and one sister: Leona Schreiber.


Joseph Anderlik

Funeral services for Joseph "Joe" Anderlik of Shoreview were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15 at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, White Bear Lake.

Interment was in St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery. Holcomb-Henry-Boom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Joseph, 72, died Thursday, March 10, 2005.

Joe was a partner in a successful civil engineering firm for 43 years, retiring in 2000. His long-range master plans, designed in the 1960's are still in use today.

Joe and his wife Betty have been hosts for many foreign students since 1968. He enjoyed world travel, performing and fine arts, and growing orchids and roses.

They established a scholarship program and remodeled environmental labs at Iowa State. They also purchased defibrillators for First Responders throughout Ramsey County.

He is survived by his wife Betty; children: Mark, Lynn Thom, and Jill Rauenhorst; five grandchildren; two brothers: Claire and Dave; and one sister: Judy Daly.


Alice Morris

Funeral services for Alice "Nana" Morris were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 12 at Gesu Catholic Church in Milwaukee, WI.

Alice, 97, died Sunday, March 6, 2005 at Park Manor.

Alice was born near Saratoga, the daughter of the late Charles and Antonia Dozark.

She was a great cook, baker, gardener and liked to walk.

She is survived by her children: Mary Stanke, Barbara Morris, Douglas, and Karen Morris-Cetin; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters: Kathryn Brinn and Irene Bayer.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Howard in 1973; one daughter: Alice Morris; one grandson; her parents; and one brother: William.


Evelyn Montague

Evelyn, 91, died Sunday, March 13, 2005 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Evelyn Mary Montague was born March 27, 1913 in Monona the daughter of Emil and Anna (Novak) Polashek. They moved to Cresco in 1920 and joined St. Joseph's Parish. She graduated from eighth grade at St. Joseph's School in 1926 and graduated from Cresco High School in 1930. She worked at her father's grocery and meat market for several years, and later at the J.C. Penney Store as a clerk until 1936.

In 1937 she married Clarence (CJ) Montague in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Dorothy.

Evelyn served as a member of St. Joseph's Altar and Rosary Society and held the office of treasurer for 10 years. She was also a life member of the Howard County Historical Society and the Hospital Auxiliary.

She loved to read, make scrapbooks, do needlework, and cook. After CJ retired, they enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by her children: James J. of Lake Elmo, MN, Mary Ann Valdez of San Antonio, TX, Paul A. of Madison, WI, and Mark T. of Sparks, NV; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband CJ in 2001; and one brother: Emil Jerome.


Leonard Sekora

Funeral services for Leonard Sekora of Cresco, formerly of Lime Springs, were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with Pastor Linda J. Prestholt officiating.

Interment will be held in the spring in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Lime Springs. Pallbearers were: Ted Ihns, Delbert Ihns Jr., Rick Wangen, Todd Kowalke, Gene Shaffer, Darrel Elsbernd, Russell Fitzgerald, and Ron Fitzgerald.

Leonard, 89, died Saturday, March 12 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Leonard Frank Sekora was born September 21, 1915 near Maple Leaf, the son of John and Agnes (Treml) Sekora. As a small child, the family moved to the farm in Albion Township. For a period of about six years the family moved to Chicago only returning to the farm that Leonard lived on for most of the remainder of his life. Leonard retired in 1989 after he had a heart attack and in 1992, he moved into an apartment in Lime Springs. He entered the Cresco Care Center in October of 2003.

He graduated from the eighth grade at Liberty School near his home. He was also proud of the fact that he was self-taught in courses in law, business and finance. Although he had this education, his heart remained as a farmer and cattleman his entire life.

He was a member of the Iowa Cattleman's Association, the Iowa Beef Producers Association and the Iowa Farm Bureau.

He liked to play cards and tell stories.

Leonard was preceded in death by his father in 1959; his mother in 1974; and one brother: Earl.


Pauline Mikota

Funeral services for Pauline Mikota were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 21 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin.

Her nieces and nephews placed the pall. Interment was in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin. Pallbearers were: Mark Drtina, Dave Drtina, Mike DeWald, Jim Kuchar, Paul Haley, and Edmund Samec. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Pauline, 94, died Saturday, March 19 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Pauline Jane Mikota was born April 3, 1910 in Winneshiek County, east of Protivin, the daughter of Joseph Kovarik Jr. and Bertha (Frey) Mikota. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She attended school in Protivin and graduated from Rudolphinum High School in 1929. She continued her education at Iowa Teachers College in order to become a teacher. She was unable to find a teaching position, so she started working as a secretary for the Protivin Creamery and for several years worked as a telephone operator for the Protivin Telephone Company.

On October 28, 1942, she married Vivian Mikota at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. They farmed on the Mikota home farm until they retired and moved into Protivin in 1970.

Pauline was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and the Senior Citizens of Protivin.

Pauline was preceded in death by her husband Vivian in 1990; one daughter: Jane Kalishek; her parents; one brother: Edward; and one sister: Henrietta Kuchar.


Gerald Methany

Funeral services for Gerald Matheny of Cresco were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 19 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Interment was in Center Point Cemetery in Center Point.

Gerald, 68, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Gerald L. Matheny was born September 10, 1936 in Iowa City, the son of Lyle K. and Lavon L. (Potter) Matheny.

On November 20, 1960, he married Grace Fifield and two children were born. Grace later passed away on February 20, 1986. He married Carolyn Traff on May 2, 1987. He was employed as the Deputy Clerk of District Court in Linn County from 1961-1964, and Justice of the Peace of Linn County in 1969. Gerald was also the Mayor of Center Point from 1970-1972, and then became Howard County Judicial Magistrate in 1973-1977.

Gerald enjoyed every aspect of railroads. He would sometime coordinate bus and train schedules to arrive and depart at particular places. He was a part-time minister and song leader for numerous church congregations all over Iowa and southern Minnesota that were too small to afford their own minister.

He cherished his three cats.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn; one daughter: Anita Elliott of Ames; one son: Paul of Berwick; four grandchildren; three step sons: Rudi Hameister of Columbus, NE, Donald Hameister, Jr. of Rochester, MN, and Jon Hameister of Rochester, MN; six step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; three sisters: Linda Hanson of Cedar Rapids, Janet Knaack of Keystone, and Peggy Timms of Gold Canyon, AZ; and three brothers: Jeffrey Matheny of Van Horne, Allen Scott of Phoenix, AZ, and Harvey Timms of Mentor, OH.

Gerald was preceded in death by his first wife Grace; his parents; and one brother: Larry McKee.


Lylia Scrabeck

Lylia, 78, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at the Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Lylia W. (Sickle) Scrabeck was born February 12, 1927 in Pilot Mound, MN. She graduated from Lanesboro High School and Winona State College.

On August 14, 1948, she married Tilford M. Scrabeck of Harmony. She taught in local Harmony area schools for 36 years. She was active in and three-time past president of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also active in M.E.A., Harmony Education Association and Retired Teachers.

She is survived by one son: James of Scottsdale, AZ; two daughters: Jeanine Johnson of Iowa City and Jeanette Mayfield of Austin, MN; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Elaine Schmidt of Rochester, MN and Betty Glaser of Minneapolis, MN; and two brothers: Howard Sickle of Red Wing, MN and Charles Sickle of San Diego, CA.

Lylia was preceded in death by her husband Tilford; one granddaughter; and her parents.

Paul Retterath

Funeral services for Paul Retterath of rural Riceville were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 29 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Paul, 83, died Friday, March 25, 2005 at his residence.

Paul William Retterath was born June 21, 1921 on the family farm in rural Meyer, the son of Joseph J. and Anne (Klockner) Retterath. He attended local schools.

On September 28, 1949, he married Mary Catherine Schwieger at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville.

He loved farming.

He is survived by three sons: Charles of Chester, Ronald of Elma, and Gary of Riceville; two daughters: Sharon Hanson of Fredericksburg and Linda Fagerness of Princeton, MN; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Marie Rauen, Isabelle Gilgenbach, and Margaret Gerber, all of Adams, MN.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife Mary in 2002; his parents; two brothers: Alfred and Lawrence; and one sister: Marcella Winkels.


Ray Kabliska

Funeral services for Ray Kabliska of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 29 at Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Stanley Hayek officiating and Pastor Lewis Flanigan speaking.

The pall was placed by the family. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Honorary pallbearers were: Phil Birkelo, Paul Morgan, Clarence Steffen, Charles DeWalle, and Byron Knox. Pallbearers were: Bob Moudry, Chad Stone, Larry Grimstad, Nathan Thorson, George Bucheit, and Gene Koschmeder. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ray, 84, died Friday, March 25, 2005 at Regional Health Services Hospital Hospice Unit, where he had been since Monday, March 21.

Raphael Raymond Kabliska was born July 21, 1920 in Cresco, the son of Frank Kobliska and Mamie Grace Komarek. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. He attended elementary and high school at Assumption School in Cresco, where he graduated in 1938. He attended a Jr. College for two years, attended a business/commercial school for a year and then attended a state normal school for a year studying law enforcement.

On June 25, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy at Los Angeles, CA and served as an aviation metalsmith with the Fleet Air Wing Six, Headquarters Squadron. He was discharged on June 28, 1945 at Whidby Island, WA. He enlisted in the Naval Reserves until 1949. On May 23, 1951, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving as M/Sgt in Korea until his discharge on February 4, 1952. He enlisted in the Army Reserves and served his nation until he retired as a CW4 on July 21, 1980.

Ray had moved to California in 1939 and after his active duty in the armed forces, he served on the Police Dept. of Monrovia, CA, where he retired as a Police Sgt. for the city of Monrovia. He also worked as a security officer for the Southern California Racing Commission. Ray retired and moved to Cresco in 1971. After coming to Cresco, he worked for the State of Iowa as an investigator for the Dept. of Transportation. He also worked part-time for the Conway Funeral Home and sold cars for Stone Ford in New Hampton.

On October 21, 1961, he married Vernelle A. Ellingson at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah. They moved back to Iowa after their son, Matthew was born.

Ray continued to stay active even after he retired. He belonged to many organizations and was the leader of most of them at one time or another. He was a member of the Community Theatre and performed in many of the plays. He was a charter member of the V.F.W. Post #4561 in 1945 and was the first Post Commander. He later filled that position again when he returned to Cresco. He was a member of the American Legion Post #135 in Cresco, the BPOE Elks Lodge #443 in Decorah, a member of the Retired Public Employees Assoc of California, Warrant Officers Assoc, Council #1571 of the Knights of Columbus, Davis Assembly of the 4th Degree of Knights of Columbus, Howard County Peace Officers Assoc, and was a long time member of the Veteran's Affairs Commission in Howard County. He was active in his church. He chaired the turkey dinners, distributed communion at church and to the sick and shut-ins every week. He also enjoyed playing Santa.

He is survived by his wife Vernelle of Cresco; one son: Matthew of Cresco; two grandchildren; and one step granddaughter.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents.


Dorothy Herold

Funeral services for Dorothy E. Herold will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 30 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco.

Conway Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Dorothy, 84, died Sunday, March 27, 2005 at the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, MN of natural causes.

Ethel Haugsted

Funeral services for Ethel Haugsted of New Hampton were held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 26 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Interment will be in the spring at New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Ethel, 76, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Ethel Mae Haugsted was born November 26, 1928 in rural Cresco, the daughter of Charlie and Florence Cleghorn. She attended rural schools and lived in the Cardinal Marsh area until she got married

On August 2, 1950, she married Arthur John Haugsted in Taopi, MN. They resided in the rural Schley area.

Ethel lived with her daughter for two years after Art passed away in 1982. She then moved to New Hampton where she remained.

Ethel was a homemaker her entire life. She enjoyed putting puzzles together and was known for her love of knick-knacks and animal figurines.

She is survived by one daughter: Shirley Stevenson of Ionia; one son: David of Anamosa; one brother: Gene of Wauseca, MN; two sisters: Jeanette Young of Marion and Dorothy of Oklahoma; six grandchildren; eight great-granchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.

Ethel was preceded in death by her husband Art; her parents; two sisters: Louise Heibal and Laura Armstrong; and three brothers: John, Charles, and Don.


Lester Snyder

Funeral services for Lester Pete Snyder of Castalia will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 30 at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia with Rev. David Lenth officiating.

Interment will be in the Greenwood-Centennial Cemetery in rural Castalia. Schluter & Balik Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Lester, 84, died Saturday, March 26, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN after a brief illness.

He is survived by his wife Lillian of Castalia; one daughter: Ruth Scott of Bruce, WI; one son: Keith of Castalia; and one brother: Henry of Independence.


Lillian Hass

A private family service for Lillian Hass of Riceville was held on Friday, March 25 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville with Rev. Michael Carey officiating.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Lillian, 86, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Lillian Lulu Hass was born December 14, 1918 in Spring Creek Township in Tama County, the daughter of Herbert and Linda (Michelsen) Puls.

On September 3, 1941, she married Newell Wilmer Hass in Waterloo. They farmed in Tama County until 1953. They then moved to Howard County. Newell passed away on July 26, 1983 and she moved into Riceville. Lillian moved to the Evergreen Apartments in Osage in 2001 and entered the Riceville Community Rest Home in 2002.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband Newell; one sister: Helen Plaehn; and one brother: Loren.


Viona Reinhart

Funeral services for Viona "Maude" Reinhart of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 14 at the Cresco United Methodist Church in Cresco with Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Maude, 93, died Friday, March 11, 2005 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Viona Maude Reinhart was born June 8, 1911 in Westborn, Manitoba, Canada, the daughter of James Webb and Mary Elizabeth (Sanborn) Richards. The family moved to Iowa in December of 1919. She attended grade school and high school in Cresco graduating from high school in 1930.

On September 26, 1932, she marred Merle Clarence Reinhart in Cresco. They lived on a farm in Vernon Springs Township all their married lives. Maude was an active member of the Farm Bureau Women's Club, United Methodist Women and she and Merle enjoyed being members of the Good Will Club.

In 1997 she moved to the Howard County Residential Care Facility and in January of 2003 she moved to the Cresco Care Center due to failing health.

She is survived by two sons: Richard and Bill, both of Cresco; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; and one sister: Donabelle Cook of Denver, CO.

Maude was preceded in death by her husband Merle; her parents; and two sisters: Marguerite Wallace and Nellie Richards.
