Donald Larsen

Funeral services for Donald Larsen of Cresco will be held at 10:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, February 2 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Donald died Thursday, January 27, 2005 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco of respiratory failure.

Donald Charles Larsen was born February 24, 1924 at home in Howard County, rural Saratoga on the farm his grandfather Niels Larsen purchased in 1885. He attended country school at Howard #4.

The Great Depression forced his family off its farm. Don's mother became ill. Due to Don's mother's illness the younger siblings went to live with family and friends. Arnold and Rose Laue invited him to stay with them, and he did for the rest of their lives. A few years after he joined them on the Maple Leaf farm the three of them moved north of Cresco where Don remained until his death.

Don's love in life was farming and people. This past harvest season he took one last round in the combine. He was disappointed when the end of the harvest season arrived and the machinery had to be put away. One of his hobbies was collecting John Deere memorabilia.

He served on the Church Council at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco for a number of years. In 1992 Don started a non-profit agency, (L and L) to build apartments for senior citizens and generate income to give to various community organizations for years to come. In 2001 Don was inducted into the Times Plain Dealer Hall of Fame for generous contributions to the growth of his community.

He is survived by two of his 11 siblings: Elma Maebelle Larsen Burgart of New Hampton and Rose Marie Susie Larsen Belmont of Vista, CA.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Spencer and Rosabel (Inwards) Larsen; and siblings: Laura Irene Larsen Stevenson, Victor Theodore, Nels Whitman Duke, Leonard Lemoine, Mildred Marie Larsen Stevenson, Arlene Winnifred Larsen Bonnette, Elmer Kenneth, and Duwayne William, and his beloved Arnold and Rosella Stevenson Laue.


Ruth Kallevang

Funeral services for Ruth Kallevang of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 29 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ruth, 93, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at the Howard County Hospital.

Ruth Emma Amelia Kallevang was born July 3, 1911 in the rural Ossian area, the daughter of Henry and Rose (Meyer) Mundt. She attended Centennial School near Castalia.

On May 5, 1938, she married James Kallevang at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. They farmed for 39 years in the Decorah and Cresco areas before retiring in 1977, then moved to Cresco.

She was very active in many organizations including the Farm Bureau, the Farm Bureau women's chorus, Rebekah Lodge, the Sons of Norway, and the First Lutheran Church. She also enjoyed music and crocheting.

She is survived by her husband James; three children: Rosalie Fountain of Rochester, MN, Carol Doane of Little Cedar and Jenz Kallevang of Waukon; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Marvel Ode of Lanesboro, MN and Mildred Loffe of Ossian.

Ruth was preceded in death by one grandchild; her parents; one sister: Viola; and three brothers: Lloyd, Glen, and Leslie.


John "Jack" Henry

Memorial services for John "Jack" Henry of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 5 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry Charipar officiating.

Friends may call at the church after 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Inurnment will be held in Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa are handling the arrangements.

Jack, 71, died Friday, January 28, 2005 at the Cresco Care Center following a brief illness.

John M. Henry was born August 20, 1933 on the family farm in Howard County, the son of John W. and Margurite (Norton) Henry. He worked as truck driver for the oil industry for many years most recently with Hovden Oil in Ridgeway. He served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955.

He was a member of VFW #4561 in Cresco. He was a member of Notre Dame Parish.

John enjoyed collecting all kinds of things and loved to attend the races in all of Northeast Iowa. He also participated in slow pitch softball for many years. He enjoyed watching his grandkids in their various sports and activities.

He is survived by three sons: James J., Mark A., and Philip M., all of Cresco; three daughters: Christine K. Vokaty of Protivin, Lisa J. Hadacek of Fort Atkinson, and Jacqueline M. Lickteig of Cresco; 15 grandchildren; two brothers: Gaylord and Merle of California; and one sister: Colleen Copper of Fort Dodge.

John was preceded in death by one grandchild; his parents; three infant siblings; and two sisters: Rosemarie McCulloch and Sister Patricia Henry BVM.


Jean Ollendick

Funeral services for Jean Ollendick of Hills were held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 26 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hills with Rev. David Hitch officiating.

Interment was in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in rural Hills. Pallbearers were: Scott Ollendick, Todd Ollendick, Tim Ollendick, Todd Ollendieck, Chris Michel, Justin Hovey, Robert Hruska, and Brian Shaull. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service handled the arrangements.

Jean A. Ollendick was born April 10, 1940 in Kendallville, the daughter of Willard and Gladys (Headington) Trouten. She attended country school in Winneshiek County and graduated from Cresco High School in 1958.

On April 30, 1960, she married Charles Ollendick in Cresco.

For over 35 years she served as church sacristan and she took great pride and pleasure in arranging the flowers on the alter.

Her hobbies were crafts, painting, gardening, and flower arranging.

She is survived by her husband Charles of Hills; her children: David, and Karen Karr; six grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Duane of Holiday, FL, Arnold of Kendallville, Jack of Cedar Falls, Lois Ollendieck of Cresco, Martha Hruska of Kendallville, and Mary Hovey of Kendallville.

Jean was preceded in death by three sons: Wayne, Edward, and Joseph; her parents; two brothers: George and Johnny; and one sister: Mabel.

Adam Burke

Funeral services for Adam Burke of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 4 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry Charipar officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Adam, 22, died Monday, January 31, 2005 in an automobile accident in Winneshiek County.

Adam John Burke was born June 16, 1982 in Cresco, the son of John Burke and Janice (Magnus) Ollendick. He attended Crestwood Elementary and graduated from Crestwood High School in 2000. He attended UNI and graduated "Cum Laude" with a business management degree in Human Resources. Adam also attended classes to receive his coaching certificate. He was currently employed as a manager with the Kwik Trip Corporation.

Adam enjoyed wrestling, snowmobiling, watching moto-cross racing and spending time with his friends and family. Adam loved playing the "big brother" role to Tylor, Afton, and Tannor. He rarely missed any of their activities and accomplishments. He was their biggest fan and best friend.

He is survived by his father, John; his mother and step father, Janice and Dan Ollendick; his brothers: Tylor and Tannor; and his sister; Afton; paternal grandparents: John and Eleanor Burke of Elma; and step grandparents: Ken and Donna Ollendick of Lime Springs.

Adam was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents: Clair and Bernyce Magnus.


Mary Chandler

Memorial services for Mary Chandler of Rochester, MN will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 12 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco.

Mary, 90, died Sunday, February 6, 2005 at the Seasons Hospice.

Mary Florence Chandler was born April 22, 1914 in Schaller, the daughter of Willard and Mae (Stevens) McLaughlin. Mary grew up and attended school in Schaller. She then attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. She taught in several schools before getting married.

On May 31, 1940, she married Arlon Burris Chandler in Sibley. Arlon's work took them briefly to California before returning to the family farm in Iowa. From 1942 to 1950 Mary began raising her family on the farm and then in Johnston. In 1950 the family moved to LaGrande, OR. In 1957 the family moved to Cresco, where the couple owned and operated the Coast-to-Coast Store for many years.

Mary was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was active in the UMW Circle. She was also a member of Cimota. She enjoyed reading, travel, and crocheting.

She is survived by four children: Beverly Bullard of Brooklyn Park, MN, Bill of Byron, MN, Tom of Elkader, and Darryl of Shingle Springs, CA; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Arlon; her parents; and one brother: Freeman.


Orland Cooley

Funeral services for Orland "Bud" Cooley of Ridgeway will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 10 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway with Pastor Phillip Olson and Pastor Gary Lee officiating.

Interment will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held one hour before the service.

Orland, 84, died Sunday, February 6, 2005 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah following a four year struggle with bone cancer.

Orland Melvin Cooley was born April 14, 1920 in Ventura, the son of Addison and Lena (Bach) Cooley. Bud was baptized into the Christian faith at the United Brethren Church in Ventura in 1926. He confirmed his faith at Faith Lutheran at Miller in 1934. He received his education in the Ventura Public Schools.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Bud enlisted in the United States Army and served for four years. Part of the time Bud's service was on convoy ships and the last few months in Florida in a prisoner of war camp for German soldiers.

On May 5, 1943, he married Doris Synsby at the Lutheran Parsonage in Forest City. They farmed, raised Jersey cattle and was a welder. Following his retirement, he did a lot of woodworking.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and held a variety of offices. He was past commander of the VFW and a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Doris; three children: Ronald of Chatfield, MN, Janele of Ridgeway, and Curtis of Camanche; 11 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Orland was preceded in death by one great-grandson; his parents; three brothers: Lawrence, as a child, Clarence, and Arnold; and two sisters: Evalena Coe and Ida Morse.


Ella Rucker

Funeral services for Ella Rucker of LeRoy, MN were held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 8 at the LeRoy Evangelical Lutheran Church in LeRoy, MN with Rev. Thomas Kolden officiating.

Interment will be at a later date at the Saratoga Cemetery in Saratoga. Hindt Hutchins Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ella, 86, died Saturday, February 5, 2005 at the Austin Medical Center in Austin, MN.

Ella Mae Rucker was born October 1, 1918 in Cresco to Albert Kach and Clara Volkering. She graduated from Cresco High School. She was employed at the National 5 and 10 Cent Store in Cresco for 10 years and was later employed by Sears Roebuck also of Cresco.

On October 1, 1955, she married Ray Rucker at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in Saratoga where they farmed. They loved the animals and poultry which was a side line to their farming operation until March of 1972. Ray died and after his death Ella later moved to LeRoy. At that time she also went to work at LeRoy Products Corp. (LPC) for about 10 years.

She was a member of LeRoy Lutheran Church and the ELCA Lutheran Circles. She enjoyed playing cards and working on puzzles.

She is survived by one sister: Bernice Haven of California.

Ella was preceded in death by her husband; one sister: Gladys; and one brother: Gene.


Jerry Ross

Funeral services for Jerry Alan Ross of Carthage, IL are pending at the United Methodist Church in Carthage, IL for Friday, February 11.

Interment will be in Scott Township Cemetery in Winfield, IA.

Jerry, 66, died Sunday, February 6, 2005 at the home of his son in West Salem, WI after a long battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife Lois Jean; two daughters: Debra Jean Smith of Lime Springs and Shari Rae Bolton of Lime Springs; one son: William Alan of West Salem, WI; and five grandchildren.


Michael Smith

Funeral services for Michael Smith of Lourdes were held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 4 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes.

Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Cemetery in Lourdes. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Michael Smith, 43, died Saturday, January 29, 2005 as a result of a snowmobile accident near Lourdes.

Michael Joseph Smith was born August 9, 1961 at Cresco, the son of Joseph and Jeanne (Shores) Smith. He received his education in the New Hampton School graduating from the New Hampton High School in 1979. After his schooling he farmed with his father, which he has done all of his life. In addition to farming Michael also worked for Pioneer Trailers, S&S Trailers, and S&S Duraline Trailers, all near Elma as a welder, mechanic and also delivered trailers to the east coast. He was also a dealer for Nutra-Flow fertilizer.

On July 19, 1987, he married Melony Meyer at the Little Brown Church in Nashua and the couple later renewed their vows at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. They resided on a farm near Lourdes.

He enjoyed rebuilding wrecked cars, was an excellent mechanic, learning from his father and on his own, rebuilding engines, fishing, and hunting. Michael loved farming and had completely rebuilt a Chevelle, his first car, from the ground up. In the past few years he had enjoyed going to Figure 8 races to watch his son Joshua race.

He was a member of the Howard County Stumpjumpers Snowmobile Club, for which he ran the groomer and marked trails. He was also a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife Melony of Lourdes; two daughters: Mandy Jean Smith and Jamie Sue Smith, both at home; three sons: Lee Michael, currently serving with the U.S. Marines in Iraq, Joshua Dean of Elma, and Mitchell Patrick at home; his parents: Joe and Jeanne of Lourdes; one brother: Robert of New Hampton; two sisters: Sheila Kruger of Van Horne and Sandy Hein of Tipton; and maternal grandfather: Milo Shores of Protivin.

Michael was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother; his paternal grandparents; and one brother: James John.


Kenneth Fossen

Funeral services for Kenneth Fossen of Jerico were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 5 at Jerico Lutheran Church in Jerico, rural New Hampton with Rev. Kent Dethlefsen officiating.

Interment was in Jerico Lutheran Church Cemetery in Jerico. Pallbearers were: Wayne Arnold, Roger Reicks, Lowell Knutson, Keith Vsetecka, Oakleigh Natvig, and Ronald Anderson. Honorary pallbearers were: Lawrence Ondrashek, Shorty Flatjord, and Neal Flatjord. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Kenneth, 84, died Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at his home of natural causes.

Kenneth Arthur Fossen was born October 8, 1920 on a farm east of Jerico, the son of Severt and Ansena (Knutson) Fossen. He was baptized in 1920 and confirmed in 1934, both at the Jerico Lutheran Church. He attended rural school sub district #2, until going to New Hampton High School. After graduation, Kenneth attended the Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls and Luther College in Decorah. He earned a teaching certificate. Over the years he taught in many rural schools. He also worked on his father's farm during the summer months and also helped his brother Harold on his farm.

Kenneth was a lifelong member of the Jerico Lutheran Church where he served the church in many capacities. He was also the Chickasaw County Representative on the Hawkeye REC Board for many years.

He was an avid sports fan, frequent blood donor, and participated in numerous community activities. He also enjoyed playing cards.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Harold.

Pastor John Vagts

Funeral services for Pastor John Vagts were held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 7 at Faith Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, MN with Pastor David Christensen and Pastor Paulus Pilgrim officiating.

Pallbearers were his grandchildren. Dobratz-Hantge Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements.

Pastor John, 86, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005. He became a resident of Burn Manor Nursing Home on February 7, 2003.

Pastor John R. Vagts was born May 6, 1918 in Cresco, the son of Frederick W. and Anna Rose (Kakac) Vagts. He was baptized as an infant on June 2, 1918, and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth on July 12, 1931, both at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. John received his education in Cresco and was a graduate of the Cresco High School Class of 1935. He furthered his education at Wartburg College in Waverly and graduated in May of 1939. John then attended Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque and graduated in May of 1942. He was ordained on June 28, 1942 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco.

On June 10, 1943, he married Erma Lucine Clark at St. John's Lutheran Church in Dundee. Daniel, their son, passed away at the age of three from Leukemia. Throughout their marriage, they made their home in the Minnesota towns of Donnelly, Rochester, Gaylord, Ortonville and Hutchinson where Pastor John served the communities as pastor. Erma passed away on April 6, 2003.

In his younger years, Pastor John was very involved in a Bible Camp in Onamia, MN. He was instrumental in building church programs.

Pastor John is survived by his children: Frederick, Virginia Northcott, and William; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother: Martin; and one sister: Mary Ann Roop.

Pastor John was preceded in death by his wife Erma; one son: Daniel; and his parents.


Dr. Robert Morris

Funeral services for Dr. Robert "Bob" Morris of Storm Lake were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 12 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.

Interment was in Lake Lutheran Cemetery in Goldfield. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Dr. Morris, 84, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Robert Ray Morris was born August 26, 1920 in Bonair, the son of Ray Clarence and Mae Elizabeth (Goldy) Morris. When he was six years old, the family moved to Cresco where he attended public school and graduated from high school with honors in 1939. Following high school, he was employed by The Hub Men's Clothing Store until he enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He served his country for three and one half years before returning to the States in December of 1945. His Navel Air Corps Unit surveyed the coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean along borders of North and South America, searching for enemy aircraft and submarines. He earned the rank of Radioman First Class and was an instructor in the Signal Corp.

Following his honorable discharge, Bob was approached by his uncle Walter Morris and asked if he would manage his variety store back in his hometown of Cresco. After thoughtful consideration, he remembered the agony of painful feet of his fellow servicemen. It was then he decided to pursue the profession of Podiatry.

On June 15, 1946, he married Grace Kathleen Harvey at Lake Lutheran Church near Goldfield. They left for Fort Collins, CO where Bob had enrolled at Colorado State College. He was accepted and received his doctorate degree, cum laude, from Illinois School of Podiatric Medicine and Foot Surgery in Chicago. While attending school, he was employed by the Illinois Masonic Hospital until he opened his private practice in Storm Lake in November of 1951.

He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. He was involved in civic organizations such as Hy-Noon Kiwanis, Airport Commission, as well as being an advocate for Methodist Manor. He was an active member of the American Podiatric Medical Association for 50 years and served on the Iowa State Board of Podiatric Examiners from 1980 to 1986.

He enjoyed playing cards, motorcycling, watching sports and observing nature.

He is survived by his wife Grace; his children: Kathleen Henderson of Anchorage, AK, Krystine Savidge of Mesa, AZ, R. Gregory of Brooklyn Park, MN, Jan Mummert of Spencer; six grandchildren; three step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters: Goldie May of Chula Vista, CA and Frances Anderson of Ankeny; and one brother: George of Milford.

Dr. Morris was preceded in death by one granddaughter; his parents; one brother: Leland; and one sister: Mary.


Richard Kruse

Funeral services for Richard Kruse of Bakersfield, CA, formerly of Lime Springs were held on Wednesday, February 2.

Richard died Friday, January 28, 2005 in Bakersfield following a lengthy illness with kidney disease and congestive heart failure.

Richard Allen Kruse was born July 26, 1947 in Cresco, the son of Dale E. and Lucille K. (Van Der Heyden) Kruse. He was raised in Howard Center and Forest City Townships in Howard County. He attended elementary school through eighth grade in Lime Springs, with the exception of three years of country school under the instruction of Rosella Fausnaugh. Richard attended Crestwood High School and graduated in 1965. Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. After being honorably discharged he began a 26-year career with The Thrifty Drug Store company. Health deterioration forced him to leave his career several years ago.

He married Karla Badenell in 1970.

He is survived by his wife Karla; two daughters: Karen and Kristie; one son: Robert; two grandchildren; three step grandchildren; all of Bakersfield; five sisters: Shirley McCarville of LeRoy, MN, Mary Peterson of Preston, MN, Maxine Stockman of Lime Springs, Sharon Larson of Lime Springs, and Gail Ludens of St. Charles, MN; and five brothers: Gerald and Ronald of Lime Springs, Dale of Decorah, Gary of Hayfield, MN, and Lynn of Marion.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and maternal and paternal grandparents.


Robert Hinzman

Memorial services for Robert "Bob" Hinzman of Riceville were held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 12 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville.

Interment will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville as Robert made an anatomical gift to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

Robert, 82, died Wednesday, February 9, 2005.

Robert E. Hinzman was born November 20, 1922 in Riceville, the son of William Ford and Lera (Dunton) Hinzman. Bob attended local schools and graduated from Riceville High School in 1940.

On July 1, 1942, he married Lola Thompson.

Bob worked with his father in the Hinzman Pool Hall in Riceville and later attended barber's college in Cedar Rapids. He and his wife Lola operated the Hinzman's Hair N Care in Riceville until health caused him to retire in 2003. Lola continues to operate the salon.

As a younger man he enjoyed hunting and was an excellent trap shooter. His biggest enjoyment was attending any kind of car races.

He is survived by his wife Lola of Riceville; one daughter: Connie Kilts of Cedar Rapids; and one granddaughter.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents.


Edith Alberts

Funeral services for Edith Alberts of Chester were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 12 at the Chester United Methodist Church in Chester with Rev. Candie Carey officiating.

Interment was in the Chester Hill Cemetery. Hindt Hutchins Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Edith, 80, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN of a brain aneurysm.

Edith M. Alberts was born May 9, 1924 in Chester, the daughter of Curtis Tibbals and Emma Begeman. She attended school in Chester.

On July 6, 1941, she married Vernie L. Alberts in Rochester, MN. She was employed at the LeRoy Egg Plant from 1966-1967, the Riceville Nursing Home from 1975-1989, and Northland Area One on Aging from 1993-2004.

She was a vibrant active person, recently retiring at 80. She enjoyed cooking. She was a life long member of the Chester Methodist Church.

She is survived by six children: James of Fairbank, Nancy Tucke of Chester, Thomas of Spokane, WA, Jeannie Bucknell of Postville, Pamela Wendel of Chester, and Brenda Dohlman of Riceille; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters: Tressa Albert, Effie Morris of Waterloo, Francis Poppenga of Lennox, SD, and Clarice Crouse of Waterloo; and one brother: Curtis of Evansdale.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband in 1999; and her parents.

Lloyd Tuchek

Lloyd Henry Tuchek was born May 23, 1924 in Cresco, the son of Joseph and Esther (Ferrie) Tuchek.

He grew up in the Cresco area, graduating from Cresco High School in 1943. Lloyd served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific.

On August 14, 1948, he married Gerry Leas in Cresco. They moved to Ellsworth on July 4, 1964. He worked at the Thompson Hatchery as a supervisor, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Jewell and the American Legion Post in Cresco.

Lloyd enjoyed hunting, fishing, and feeding and watching birds and squirrels.

He is survived by his wife R. Geraldine of Ellsworth; two daughters: Mary Beth Grove and Kathleen R. Eittreim, both of Ellsworth; one son: James Lee of Jewell; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons; one brother: David; and one sister: Ruth Tuchek, both of Cresco.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers: John, Joseph, and Rudy.

John Nosbisch

Funeral services for John Nosbisch of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 22 at the Holy Family Parish-St. Mary's Center in New Hampton with Msgr. Carl Schmitt officiating.

The pall was placed by his six sons. Interment was held in St. Mary's Cemetery in North Washington. Pallbearers were his grandsons: Jeff Huegl, Jamie Nosbisch, Randy Nosbisch, Adam Nosbisch, Robert Nosbisch, Matt Nosbisch, Kevin Nosbisch, and Mark Dempsey. The Catholic Order of Foresters served as honorary pallbearers. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

John, 86, died Saturday, February 19, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

John A. Nosbisch was born May 21, 1918 on the family farm near North Washington, the son of John Peter and Susanna (Zeien) Nosbisch. He was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith at Immacualte Conception Catholic Church in North Washington. He attended St. Mary's Grade School and high school in North Washington graduating in 1935. During his youth he loved playing baseball for the town team.

On October 7, 1946, he married Florence Dockendorf at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington. They farmed the Nosbisch family farm near North Washington until retiring in 1981. The couple moved into New Hampton in 1989.

John was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Holy Name Society at I mmaculate Conception Church in North Washington. He also served as a board member for Chickasaw County Council on Aging and as a committee person for Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service.

He loved playing and coaching baseball, playing cards and watching sports and game shows on TV.

He is survived by his wife Florence; six sons: Don of Charles City, Tim of North Washington, Michael of Wytheville, VA, Lynn of Dyersville, Wayne of Greenfield, Kenneth of Nebraska City, NE; four daughters; Sister Frances Nosbisch O.S.F. of Quincy, IL, Linda Huegel of North Washington, Barbara Dempsey of Windsor Heights, Joan of Iowa City; 27 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister: Anna Nosbisch of New Hampton.

John was preceded in death by one daughter: Mary Catherine in infancy; his parents; six brothers: Leo, Albert, Clarence, Joseph, Edward, and Herman; and one sister: Frances.


Kathleen Sobolik

Funeral services for Kathleen "Kay" Sobolik of Cresco were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 18 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Gary Lee and Intern Paul Miller officiating.

Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Kay, 59, died Monday, February 14, 2005 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, MN, following a battle with ovarian cancer.

Kathleen Joanne Sobolik was born August 2, 1945 at Saint Joseph Hospital in Cresco, the daughter of John W. and Hazel (Borgan) Davis. She attended Lime Springs elementary schools and graduated from Crestwood High School in 1963. While in school, she was active in vocal and instrumental music, Luther league, and 4-H; she won numerous awards in 4-H and served a year as President for the Howard County Clubs.

On August 31, 1963 she married David Linderbaum and to this union three children were born, Lisa, Mark and Aaron. They were later divorced.

On August 24, 1991, she married Richard Sobolik.

Kay graduated from Northeast Iowa Community College with honors, and graduated from Rochester Community and Technical College in 2004. She was a former employee of Donaldson, Inc. and Featherlite of Cresco and most recently a medical transcriptionist with Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

She was a member of Cresco First Lutheran Church, active in the Cimota Club for several years, and enjoyed stained glass, sewing, and quilting.

She is survived by her husband Richard; her children: Lisa Herd, Mark and Aaron; four grandsons; step children; step grandchildren; her mother; one sister: Dianne Kiefer; and one brother: Thom.


Leo Kelly

Funeral services for Leo Kelly of Harmony, MN were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 21 at the Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony with Rev. Don Schmitz officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Canton, MN. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Leo, 67, died at his home after a lengthy illness.

Leo Joseph Kelly was born July 30, 1937 in Decorah, the son of Frank and Mary (Knox) Kelly.

In 1958 he married Patricia Benifield in Spokane, WA. They were later divorced. He married Marilyn Kvam in 1965. She died in March of 1995. In 1998, he married Carolyn (Williams) Mitchell.

Leo attended Prosper School and graduated from Canton High School 1954. After graduation, Leo joined the Air Force and served for eight years. He was stationed at Spokane, WA, England, Germany, Vietnam, and discharged from Fairchild, CA where he returned home to the Canton area. He was a meatcutter for various grocery stores in the area prior to purchasing Yeoman's Grocery in Harmony. In 1978, he started the baler plant in Harmony. He converted his grocery store and meat market into the Shamrock Mini Mall in 1985. At the same time, he became meat manager for the Harmony IGA where he continued to work part-time after retirement until December of 2004. For the past year and one half, Leo worked part-time for High Pointe and the Harmony Greenhouse.

Leo was a member of the Harmony Community Chest where he served as chairman for the last 30 years. He was also a member of the Nativity Catholic Church and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn; one son: Leo Dale of Stringer, MS; three step daughters: Jacquelyn Kenyon of Littleton, CO, Sondra Hotvedt of Hesper, Jody Faldet of Cresco; one step son: Jason Mitchell of Decorah; 14 grandchildren; three sisters: Marilyn Erickson of Houston, MN, LaDonna Brenno of Canton, MN, Mary Faith Martinson of Monona; and four brothers: James of Canton, MN, Paul of Albert Lea, MN, Douglas of Rochester, MN, and Robert of Dodge Center, MN.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Frank.


Raymond Krueger

Funeral services for Raymond Krueger of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 14 at the Cresco United Methodist Church in Cresco with Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiating.

Interment will be held later in the spring at New Oregon Cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Raymond, 86, died Thursday, February 10, 2005 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.

Raymond Krueger was born October 20, 1918 in Howard County, the son of Edward and Zella (Fox) Krueger. He attended rural Howard County Schools.

In 1940 he married Juanita Gager and they spent all of their lives on a rural Howard County farm.

He is survived by two sons: Allan and Milton, both of Cresco; two daughters: Eileen of Rochester, MN and Ethel of Freeport; nine grandchildren; four step grandchilddren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother: John of Cresco.

Raymond was preceded in death by his wife Juanita; his parents; and three brothers.


Rose Schwickerath

Funeral services for Rose Schwickerath of New Hampton were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 18 at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center in New Hampton with Monsignor Carl Schmitt officiating.

Rose's children placed the pall. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in North Washington. Pallbearers were: Leon Geerts, Norbert Geerts, Ken Schmitt, Duane Schwickerath, Kris Schwickerath, and Jason Attig. Honorary pallbearers were: Kevin Geerts, Roger Schmitt, Steven Schmitt, and Mark Attig. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Rose, 95, died Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at her home.

Rose A. Schwickerath was born February 25, 1909 in New Hampton, the daughter of Anton and Anna (Brincks) Rosonke. She attended school in New Hampton graduating from the eighth grade after only seven years of school. At the age of 13, Rose's mother Anna died and Rose helped her father raise her brothers and sisters.

On October 18, 1927 she married William Schwickerath at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Hampton. They lived on a farm west of New Hampton for almost 60 years. William died on February 4, 1983. In 1985, Rose moved into New Hampton, where she resided until the day of her death.

She loved to read, sew, garden, write letters, carpentry, and play cards.

She is survived by three sons: Gerald of New Hampton, Denis of Alta Vista and Joe of New Hampton; four daughters: Coletta Geerts of New Hampton, Imelda Schmitt of West Union, Imogene Attig of Albert Lea, MN, and Jane Schwickerath of Waseca, MN; 32 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one sister: Sr. Mary Agnesine Rosonke O.S.F. of Dubuque.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband; two daughters: Elaine Schwickerath and Norma Tuttle; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her parents; five brothers: Bernard, Frank, Leo, John, and Tony; and one sister: Emma Eltgroth.


Omer Nystel

Funeral services for Omer Nystel of Jerico were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 18 at Jerico Lutheran Church in Jerico with Rev. Kent Dethlefsen officiating.

Omer, 68, died Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

Omer Elroy Nystel was born October 4, 1936 on a farm north of Jerico, the son of Oscar and Ella (Christensen) Nystel. He was baptized and confirmed at the Jerico Lutheran Church and attended school at Paris #7 near his family's home. He lived and farmed all of his life on a farm north of Jerico where he was born. He raised cattle and did custom baling, and most recently worked for Ron Smith at S & S Duraline Trailers.

He was always busy whether sawing firewood or just tinkering. He was a member of the Jerico Lutheran Church.

He is survived by one brother: Walter of Jerico; three sisters: Lorraine Baker of Cottonwood, AZ, Edna Bethany of New Hampton, and Clara Schulz of Mason City.

Omer was preceded in death by his parents.


Ronald McCabe

Funeral services for Ronald "Ron" McCabe were held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, February 21 at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Bluffton with Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

The family placed the pall. Inurnment will be at a later date in St. Agnes Cemetery at Plymouth Rock. Pallbearers were his nephews: Bruce Christopher, Troy McCabe, Joe Lundak, Tyler Marzolf, Mike McCabe, Randy Hageman, Alex McCabe, Nick Winter, Dan McCabe, and Jesse Underbakke. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ronald, 59, died Thursday, February 17, 2005 after suffering a heart attack.

Ronald Joseph McCabe was born April 29, 1945 in Preston, MN, the son of Joseph O. and Florence E. (Halverson) McCabe. He was raised on the farm in Burr Oak Township where he attended the rural school. He graduated from Crestwood High School in 1963. Following his education he worked for a few years and enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 26, 1965, serving a two year plus tour of duty in Vietnam. He was discharged a DC3 on January 16, 1968.

Ron worked most of his life in road construction. He could operate all of the equipment, including the heavy earth moving equipment.

In is spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Emma Gayle Hageman of Waucoma, Sharon Christopher of Bluffton, Joanne Lundak of Pine Island, MN, Michael of Adams, MN, John of Cresco, Margo Marzolf of Preston, MN, Denice Winter of New Hampton, Jeff of Canton, MN, and Jerry of Preston, MN.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister: Doreen Underbakke in 1995.


Marie Weakland

A private service for Marie "Emmie" Weakland of Cresco was held on Monday, February 14 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Michael Massa officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Emmie, 95, died Saturday, February 12, 2005 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.

Marie Dorothy Bergman Weakland was born October 14, 1909 in Germany. She immigrated to Iowa with her stepfather when she was 13 years old. Her mother and sister, Adele came two years later. They settled in Castalia. She was confirmed in German on July 12, 1925 at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church in Castalia.

On February 20, 1925, she married Raymond Schave. They adopted a daughter Lavonne in 1940 On April 6, 1943 she became a citizen of the United States in district court of Howard County in Cresco. They farmed in the Cresco area until the death of her husband Raymond on October 31, 1967. She continued to live on the farm south of Cresco.

On November 22, 1969, she married Thomas Weakland. He passed away in February 1987. Health problems in December 1998 caused her to become a resident of Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.

She is survived by one daughter: Lavonne Tietz; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.

Emmie was preceded in death by her two husbands; her parents: Fred and Marie Bergman; and one sister: Adele Michel.


Evelyn Gaffney

Funeral services for Evelyn Gaffney of Kankakee, IL, formerly of New Hampton will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 26 at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center in New Hampton.

Evelyn, 90, died Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at the Royale Health Care Center in Kankakee, IL.

Evelyn B. Gaffney was born October 20, 1914 in Protivin, the daughter of Joseph and Barbara (Ballak) Kellner.

On August 23, 1938 she married Elmer Gaffney at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton. To this union, a daughter, JoAnn was born. Evelyn worked as a type-setter and press operator at the New Hampton Newspaper for over 30 years.

In March 2000, Evelyn became a resident at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and in September 2004, she moved to the Royale Health Care Center in Kankakee, IL to be near family.

She enjoyed gardening, Bingo, and visiting with her friends and family.

She is survived by her son-in-law: Bruce Faber of Chicago, IL; three grandchildren: Cathy (David) Gonzales of Cicero, IL, Susan (Joe) Jiminez of Kankakee, IL, and Chris (Lori) of Springfield, IL; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Elmer on December 3, 1976; and her daughter JoAnn Faber on July 27, 1996.
