IF-A students remember Winkler
By Jay Knoll
NEWS REPORTER
IOWA FALLS
Tragedy struck many in the Iowa Falls and Alden areas
early Friday morning when a young Iowa Falls man was pronounced dead
following an automobile accident.
Daniel Winkler, 19, of Iowa Falls was pronounced dead
at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls shortly after the incident
occurred. Brad Brekunitch, 18, also of Iowa Falls, was air-lifted to a
Des Moines hospital. His condition is not being released.
Hardin County Sheriff deputies were dispatched at
1:52 a.m. Sept. 23 to the single-vehicle accident that occurred on
County Highway D-15, approximately one and one-half miles west of Iowa
Falls.

The driver has been identified as 26-year-old Jeremy
Kolthoff of Eldora. According to authorities, Kolthoff lost control of
the 1994 Honda Civic he was driving. The vehicle left the roadway, hit a
tree, then sheared a light pole, causing the vehicle to land on its top.
Other occupants in the vehicle included Tyler
Mennenga, 20, of Iowa Falls and Justin Ross, 17, of Eldora. Both were
treated for injuries and released.
Kolthoff is being held in the Hardin County Jail in
Eldora on charges of vehicular homicide and serious injury by vehicle,
with a total bond of $43,250. The accident is still under investigation.
The HCSO is also investigating whether or not alcohol played a role in
the wreck.
The HCSO was assisted in the call by the Iowa Falls
Police Department, Iowa Falls Fire Department, North Hardin County
Emergency Squad, Iowa State Patrol, AMR, Williams and Ackley ambulance
services. Winkler was a 2005 graduate of Iowa Falls-Alden High School
and involved in several activities, including choir, football, wrestling
and church. He was also vice president of his senior class. With IF-A
homecoming week beginning on Monday, somber emotions will fill the air.
Winkler was the 2004 IF-A homecoming king.
Friday morning, several IF-A students gathered at the
scene of the wreck to remember their former classmate, placing flowers
near the tree the vehicle struck. IF-A students Jessica Kappel, Ariel
Kugel, Kara Carr and Letha Olson all echoed the same thoughts of
Winkler.
He always wanted to make you laugh. He was always in
a good mood and just hung out with everyone, he didn’t care who you
were. He just wanted to make you happy.”
Counselors were brought into IF-A schools on Friday
to help students grieve with their loss, but many students went home for
the day. The high school auditorium has been designated as a grief
refuge as students continue to write messages to Winkler on several
posters.
Hardin County Sheriff Tim Smith is a friend of the
Winkler family and says he knew Daniel Winkler well.
“He was a great kid and I spent a lot of fun times
with him and his family. I know he will be sorely missed and I know his
parents will have a difficult time with this,” Smith said.
Funeral arrangements are pending with the Surls
Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.
IOWA FALLS-ALDEN JUNIOR Jessica Kappel
expresses the sobering pain and exhaustion many in the area felt Friday
when news broke that their former classmate and friend, Daniel Winkler,
19, of Iowa Falls, died from injuries sustained in an automobile
accident early Sept. 23.
SEVERAL
PEOPLE placed flowers near the tree which the vehicle Winkler was
riding in caromed off of, eventually striking a nearby utility pole.
Brad Brekunitch, 18, of Iowa Falls, was also seriously injured in the
accident. He was life-flighted to a Des Moines hospital.
IF-A
STUDENTS Ariel Kugel and Letha Olson try to comfort one another at the
scene of the fatal accident. The IF-A Auditorium has been turned into a
grief refuge where students are writing messages on posters for Winkler.
