Jacob Hobson drowns in College Creek
AMES—A
body found on the grounds of Iowa State University in Ames has been
identified as Jacob Hobson, 27, of Eldora. A preliminary autopsy showed
Hobson died as a result of drowning and blunt force trauma to the head.
Just before 9 a.m., Tuesday, July 19, Ames Police
received an E-911 call from a person who reportedly located a white male
unconscious in College Creek between two parking lots. The area is known
as campus town and is in the 100 block of Hayward Avenue.
Jerry Stewart, Iowa State University public safety
director, said it appeared Hobson died of drowning after an accidental
fall into the creek, which held just a few inches of water.
“According to preliminary autopsy reports, the
incident occurred in the early morning hours of July 19. Hobson
apparently fell from the creek bridge. A concrete culvert lies beneath
the bridge. After the investigation, we feel Hobson fell, hit his head
on the culvert and drowned,” Stewart said.
Ames Police say there were no obvious signs of foul
play at the scene and no reason for authorities to believe the body had
been moved. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Ames Fire
Department, Ames Police Department, Mary Greeley Medical Center, State
Medical Examiner’s office and Story County Medical Examiner’s office
were called to the scene.
Hobson was a 1996 graduate of Eldora-New Providence
High School and was a senior at ISU studying psychology. His parents are
Brian and Wanda Hobson of Eldora. ✹ |
