HUBBARD—Shirley
Clara (Rankin) Ioerger, 79, of Hubbard, formerly of Buckeye, died Monday, April
18, 2005, at the Hubbard Care Center. Funeral service were held Thursday, April
21, at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Buckeye with burial in the Buckeye
Cemetery.
Shirley Clara Rankin was born April 27, 1925, to
Clara (Rockow) and Braiden Rankin on the Kollmansberger farm five miles west of
Alden. The home still stands today. Shirley and her siblings attended a rural
school near Alden and were baptized at the Methodist church in Williams. The
family moved to a farm one mile north and ½ mile east
of Iowa Falls. After the move, much to their mother’s coaxing, they changed
membership to the Grant Center Lutheran Church where Shirley was confirmed.
Shirley attended the Iowa Falls High School. Shirley was employed as a nanny for
the Schweitzers, Lovig flower shop and as an operator for the Northwestern
Bell Telephone Company, all of Iowa Falls. A family friend, Ella Case,
orchestrated a “blind date” with Valie Ioerger of Buckeye. After a whirlwind
courtship, they were married Dec. 31, 1950, at the Lutheran Church in Iowa
Falls. Shirley and Valie established their home ½ mile
west and two miles south of Buckeye in Section 34. Shirley then became a member
of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church LCMS of Buckeye. From their marriage two
very rambunctious daughters were born, Annette Marie and Cynthia Valerie. All
admired Shirley’s love and expertise of cooking, especially duck and dressing,
homemade noodles and scrumptious pies. Her garden and fruit trees were her pride
and joy, and she shared the “fruits” of her labor with many. A fond remembrance
for many was Shirley retrieving the mail in the winter, with deep snow, in her
bare feet. Early in her marriage she enjoyed helping at Sunday school with the
youngest children. Throughout the years, her nieces and nephews were recipients
of her love and excellent
cakes at birthdays. A debilitating stroke occurred in June of 1998 and she
became a resident of the Hubbard Care Center. Shirley’s residence at the care
center was met with many challenges from her stroke and she received excellent
care and attention to her needs. Shirley was called from this veil of tears to
be with Jesus on April 18, 2005, at 3:45 p.m. Her husband, Valie, preceded
Shirley in death in 1981. Other family members who have been called by Jesus:
her parents, Braiden and Clara Rankin; brother Bobby Gene Rankin;
brother-in-laws Lowell Reifschneider, Vernon Ioerger and Martin Kading;
sister-in-law Verlina (Ioerger) Kading; and two nephews, Dale “Beaver” Rankin
and James Ioerger.
She leaves to mourn her passing: daughter
Annette Sweeney and husband David and their two sons, James V. and Joseph D. of
rural Buckeye; daughter Cynthia Ioerger of Floral City, Fla.; her sister,
Lucille Reifschneider-Kuhlemeier and husband Pat, and brother, James A.
Rankin and wife Kathryn; sister- in-law Wilma (Risse) Ioerger of Iowa Falls; and
many nieces and nephews. Shirley will be missed by a host of friends and
relatives.
