Fischer enjoys life to the end

NEWS REPORTER
IOWA FALLS
Mike Fischer died Sunday — probably just the way he would want to die — having fun and enjoying his family. He wasn’t sick; he didn’t spend time in the hospital. He was enjoying life, right to the end.

Although he had been experiencing some of the typical aches and pains of someone his age, Mike was mentally and physically alert. At 84, he continued to drive and attend all the activities he enjoyed — fishing, socializing, gardening (and sharing the produce), Legion meetings and dinners, helping with the Historical Society’s projects, and welcoming new businesses to the community as a Chamber/Main Street Ambassador. There were very few things that Mike Fischer let get in the way of what he wanted to do.

He believed in hard work, and many of his “good deeds” were done behind the scenes, unbeknownst to most people.

He also believed in keeping the history of Iowa Falls alive for the future generations and was very active in the Historical Society. Sue Crotty worked with Mike for many years in the Society and says he “loved being an Indian, not a chief.”

As a board member, Fischer was always the one who got things done. “It seemed like Mike was always there. Even before he was on the board, if there were things that needed doing, Mike would come over and do it, and never make a big deal of it,” Crotty said. “He did so many things people didn’t know about. Mike was not a glory seeker, not a big shot. Just a wonderful, good man.”

His sister, Dorothy Chaplin, says when Mike had his clothing store, he would always hire only high school and college kids to work for him. “They were the only ones he’d hire so they’d have money,” she said. “He had a great big long list of kids who had worked for him. For a time when he was younger, when the kids were working, he’d take off and go help this group of volunteers fix up homes for the poorer people in town. He was always doing volunteer work.” The city recognized and honored him with the Community Service Award in 1990.

When asked if he was in business when Mike first started, Norm Wallen, former owner of Wallen-McAdams Men's Clothing, laughed and said “Heavens no, Mike was here a long time before I was. But he’d sure get a kick out of you thinking I was his age!

“Mike and I were competitors, friendly competitors in the clothing business. I was very lucky to have two very good competitors, Mike and Dallas Walsh,” Wallen said. “We all got along very well. We had an exceptional relationship—if one of us had something the other one needed we’d take care of it. Mike was a very good community man; he never said no to anybody when it came to helping.”

Fischer was “on a campaign to clean the river.” Chaplin said he tried for years to get something done.

It had been Mike’s pet project to clear the carp out of the river. He was fishing Saturday afternoon near Crotty's house. “My granddaughter was there and he kept teasing her that she was bad luck, he wasn’t catching anything. Then just that fast he caught this huge carp! They weighed it and it was 11½ pounds. It was the biggest one he had caught in a long time. He was so tickled,” Crotty said.

“I can’t stand the thought he won’t be around, but I am so glad that he had been doing what he loved best, fishing, the day before he died. What a great way to go!”

Mike Fischer attended Ellsworth Community College until deciding to join the U.S. Navy. But in 1941 he transferred to the Merchant Marines, serving until 1945.

He became a member of the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188 in Iowa Falls, his home away from home.

Fellow Legion member and veteran Verv Davidson served on the Honor Guard firing squad with Mike for many years. “Mike was at the Legion just last Thursday night for the steak fry. That afternoon he brought this great big box of tomatoes and green onions from his garden. He stood there and sliced all the tomatoes, then stayed and worked clear till the end. Thursday night he was just beat and admitted he was kinda tired, so I told him to get his butt home and rest. He had been there and fried all the pork chops all afternoon.

“Mike will be missed, I know that,” Davidson said quietly. The Honor Guard will represent the post at the funeral services Thursday.”
