IOWA FALLS—Dale Faber, 74, of Iowa Falls, found peace Oct. 28, 2005, at Midland Hospice in Topeka, Kan. A memorial service was held Tuesday evening, Nov. 1, at Linn’s Funeral Home, with burial at the Alden Cemetery.

Dale was born April 14, 1931, in Iowa Falls, the son of Harm and Dina (Kole) Faber. He attended grade school in a rural country schoolhouse and went on to graduate from Iowa Falls High School in 1949. Dale served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the American Legion. He was an avid reader of World War II history and loved reading the autobiographies of famous World War II generals of the United States, Germany and Japan. When not reading, he loved to fish, garden and listen to his extensive record collection. He also enjoyed a thrilling roller coaster ride and any opportunity to share stories of the past. Dale was proud of his German heritage and was deeply rooted in his faith. Dale will be remembered for his fervent work ethic, integrity and generosity by all who knew him.

Those thankful for sharing Dale’s life include two daughters, Victoria Faber and fiancé Matt Blume of Kansas City, and Cheryl Clifton and husband Philip of Pocatello, Idaho; and one grandson, Philip Clifton, also of Pocatello. He is also survived by three sisters, Elizabeth Baseler of Waterloo, Irene Parr of Tucson, Ariz., and Norma Harrison of Vancouver, Wash., along with several nieces and nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Mildred Craig and Mirium Meeks Scott; and brothers Glenn Faber, Merle Faber and Richard Faber.

IOWA FALLS—Betty Fitz, 80, of Iowa Falls, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa Falls, with burial in Northlawn Memory Gardens. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Lavonne Rastetter was born on July 28, 1925, in Williams, the daughter of William and Lydia (Wicks) Rastetter. She graduated from Buckeye High School in 1942. She married Thomas Kennedy and later married Earle Fitz on July 10, 1981. Betty had worked at the Buckeye Grocery Store, and she also worked as a customer service representative at Riverside Book & Bible, retiring in 1989. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa Falls.

Mrs. Fitz is survived by a daughter, Sharon Reece and husband William of Garner; a son, Curtis Kennedy of Iowa Falls; two stepsons, Alan Fitz and wife Ida of Iowa Falls and Aaron Fitz of Des Moines; a stepdaughter, Emily Fitz and husband Jorge Andrade of Mexico City, Mexico; a brother, Donald Rastetter and wife Doris of Jewell; a grandson, Chad Reece and wife Kris of Forest City; a granddaughter, Shelly Reece and friend Monte of Garner; six great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Thomas, Reagan, Ellie, Clint and Greg; four step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Thomas Kennedy in 1973; husband Earle L. Fitz in 1995; and three brothers, Selmar, Jerald and Edward Rastetter.

IOWA FALLS—Edward Brass, 78, of Iowa Falls, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Geneva, with the Rev. Duane K. Rhoadarmer officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Peter’s Cemetery, Geneva. Memorials may be directed in care of the family: 1112 Cadet Road, Iowa Falls, IA 50126. Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Edward Eppe Brass was born at his parents’ farm home April 27, 1927, the son of Eppe Aeilt and Margaret (Boyenga) Brass. He attended the Grant Township Country School and the Geneva Community Schools. He was baptized Dec. 1, 1931, and confirmed on April 4, 1943, at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ. He served with the U.S. Army from April 7, 1953, to Feb. 18, 1955, as a supply records specialist during the Korean Conflict. On Aug. 12, 1953, he was united in marriage to Anita Bernice Kregel at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Iowa Falls. To this union, five children were born: Douglas, Sandra, Thomas, Brett and Michael. He farmed in Franklin County until his death. Ed was a member of the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Geneva, and had served as an elder and on the church council. He also served as a Franklin County supervisor for eight years; as a past president of the Franklin County Cattlemen’s Association; as a past vice president of the Franklin County Farm Bureau; and had served on the Franklin County Extension Board for six years.

Edward Brass is survived by his wife of 52 years, Anita Brass of Iowa Falls; his children, Douglas Brass and wife Penny of Iowa Falls, Sandra Sailer and husband Ron of Geneva, Thomas Brass and wife Tami of Hampton, Brett Brass and wife Elly of Charles City, and Michael Brass and wife Amy of Rochester, Minn.; 11 grandchildren, Chad and Daniel Brass of Iowa Falls, Kimberly (Sailer) Burke of Rochester, Minn., Kelly (Sailer) Mitchell of Jamesville, Katie (Sailer) Borcherding of Maple Grove, Minn., Kristopher Sailer of Geneva, Tara Brass of Owatonna, Minn., Tanner Brass of Hampton, and Grant, Mackinzie and Colin Brass of Rochester, Minn.; and one sister, Betty Fistler of Monticello.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eppe and Margaret Brass; two sisters, Alice Richtsmeier and Anna Weber; and one brother, John Brass.

Dorothy Eleana Reed was born Dec. 4, 1917, at Cameron, Mo., the daughter of Elmo and Mary Eleana (Montgomery) Reed. She attended the Cameron Community Schools, Ellsworth Junior College and Drake University, receiving her degree in elementary education. She taught at Zearing Community Schools for two years, Owasa Community Schools for three years, Alden Community Schools for seven years, and the Ackley-Geneva Community School for 12 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Iowa Falls, Delta Kappa Gamma, Scenic City Retired Teachers, Iowa Falls Garden Club and the Rebekah’s Lodge. She enjoyed her travels with her husband to Alaska and camping in the wilderness there.

Dorothy Hogendorn is survived by her daughters, Mary Oelmann and husband Robert of Iowa Falls, and Irene McLaughlin and husband Steve of Cheney, Kan.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Merle Wolff and husband Otto, and Barbara Walker, all of Cameron, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmo and Mary Reed; her husband, Ted Hogendorn; one son, Roy Hogendorn; four sisters, Mary Ashcroft, Ruth Lybarger, Nellie Hughes and Alice Nelson; and one brother, Robert Reed.

IOWA FALLS—Ruby Steding, 64, of Iowa Falls, died on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, at her home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls with burial in the Union Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Ellen Fischer was born on Jan. 16, 1941, in Eldora, the daughter of Edward and Darlene (Wheeler) Fischer. She attended Buckeye Community Schools and graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1957. On June 19, 1957, Ruby was united in marriage with Larry Steding at the Calvary Baptist Church in Albert Lea, Minn. Ruby sold Electrolux vacuums for 38 years. Mrs. Steding was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. She was a mother, a grandmother and a housewife. She enjoyed fishing at Leech Lake with her husband Larry and family, and she enjoyed her grandchildren.

Mrs. Steding is survived by her husband of 48 years, Larry Steding of Iowa Falls; her children, Dennis Steding and wife Roxie, Doug Steding and wife Margo, and Darla Smith and husband Randy, all of Iowa Falls; seven grandchildren, Michael Steding and wife Lindsay of Big Rapids, Mich., Michelle Armitage and husband Joel of Humboldt, Bridget Bleess and husband Gary of Farmington, Minn., Joseph Steding and wife Martha of Eldora, and Samantha, Alyson and Ashley Smith of Iowa Falls; four great-grandchildren, MacKenzie and Ashlyn Steding of Big Rapids, and Logan and Conner Bleess of Farmington; and three sisters, Joan Prilipp, Peggy Grant and Jean Cook, all of Tucson, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Lillian Elnora Caruth was born Dec. 5, 1928, at her parents’ home in Alden, the daughter of Clifford and Ida Arvilla (Riley) Caruth. She attended the Alden Community Schools. On Nov. 25, 1945, she was united in marriage to Ernest Eugene Thies at the Grant Center Church north of Iowa Falls. To this union five children were born: Linda, Pammala, Daniel, Beverly and Steven. She worked as a waitress for I-35 Cafe, was hostess and cashier for Boondocks USA, and cooked for Grandma Pam’s Cafe in Williams. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Williams.

Lillian Thies is survived by three daughters, Linda Axtell and husband Dennis of Cross Hill, S.C., Pam Schutt and husband Thomas of Williams, and Beverly Timm and husband Rick of Webster City; one son, Daniel Thies and wife Gail of Lee Summit, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grand-children; one sister, Beth Vieth of Iowa Falls; and two brothers, Vernon Dale Caruth of Iowa Falls and Virgil Caruth of Hollister, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Ida Caruth; her husband, Ernest Thies; one son, Steven Thies; two sisters, Merna Crook and Peggy Slagle; and three brothers, Merton Caruth, Calvin Caruth and Glen Caruth.

GARDEN CITY—S. Earl Engelson, 92, formerly of Garden City and Buckeye, went to meet his Savior on Friday, Nov. 4, 2005, while a resident at Villa Del Sol in Marshalltown. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 7, at Stavanger Lutheran Church of Garden City, with the Rev. Rueben Unseth officiating. Casket bearers were Justin Beckman, Ryan Beckman, Everett Tysdahl, Alvern Tysdahl, Craig Torgeson and Kevin Torgeson. Interment was in Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery in Radcliffe. Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe was in charge of arrangements.

Sherman Earl Engelson was united in marriage to Verna Hegland Tysdahl in 1960.

Those thankful for Earl’s life and memory are his daughter, Mary Ella Beckman and husband Dennis; and three grandchildren, Justin, Ryan and Meredith Beckman, all of Marshalltown.

Nellie Margaret Peterson was born June 22, 1925, on her parents’ farm home in Franklin County, the daughter of Oscar Wilmer and May Irene (Donaldson) Peterson. She attended the Oakland Valley No. 8 School and graduated from the Popejoy High School as valedictorian in 1942. On Jan. 29, 1944, she was united in marriage to Max Clifton White at Hampton. To this union two children were born: Molly and Marlo. Nellie worked in restaurants in Popejoy for a couple of years before she was married and then farmed with her husband southwest of Popejoy. She was a member of the Popejoy United Methodist Church and the Women’s Society  of the church, serving as its treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the Hampton Historical Society.

Nellie White is survived by her daughter, Molly Hammervold and husband Mike of Mason City; her son, Marlo White and wife Roshawna of Webster City; four grandchildren, Travis Hammervold of Mason City, Trisha O’Hern and husband Troy of Mason City, Shanda Bergantzel and husband Derrick of Webster City, and Rusty Grove; four great-grandchildren, Carter, Lauren and Colton O’Hern of Mason City, and Dylan Bergantzel of Webster City; one sister, Karen Classon and husband Gary of Hiawatha; one brother, Merle Peterson and wife Beverly of Alden; and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Peterson of Alden.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and May Peterson; her husband, Max White; and one brother, James Peterson.

IOWA FALLS—Richard F. Reed, 91, of Iowa Falls, passed away Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, at the Ellsworth Hospital, Iowa Falls. Funeral services were held Thursday at the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls. Burial followed at the Friends Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Richard Fae Reed was born Aug. 23, 1914, at Eldora, the son of Vernon Leon and Rosa (Doering) Reed. He attended the Eldora Community Schools. In 1938 he was united in marriage to Lela Warner and they were later divorced. On June 15, 1960, he was united in marriage to Martha J. Holland at Eldora. He worked with the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) as a young man for two years doing work at what is now Pine Lake State Park, Eldora; was a farmhand for Hillis Wilson near Iowa Falls; worked for the Iowa Falls Poultry and Egg Co., and National By Products; and spent the last 20 years at Chuck’s Auto, Iowa Falls, retiring in 1978.

Richard Reed is survived by his wife, Martha Reed of Iowa Falls; two daughters, Bertha Dunn and husband Bud of Charles City, and Edna Lyman and husband Randy of Iowa Falls; seven grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Rosa Reed; one son, Vernon Buck Reed; one sister, Mae Roberts; and five brothers, John Reed, Jim Reed, Leo Reed, Melvin Reed and Bob Reed.

IOWA FALLS—Irene Cordes, 89, of Iowa Falls, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Bradford with burial in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Irene was born on May 23, 1916, on a farm in Franklin County, the daughter of John and May (Canton) Buttjer. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School. On Sept. 17, 1940, Irene was united in marriage to Albert Cordes in Iowa Falls. She was a member of the Bradford United Methodist Church and church clubs.

She is survived by a nephew, Craig Cordes of Cedar Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Albert in 1985.

Sherman Earl Engelson was the first born to Oliver and Cleo (Johnson) Engelson on June 5, 1913. In 1916 his family moved to a farm northeast of Buckeye from Garden City. Growing up in Buckeye, Earl went through the ninth grade in school and then quit to help his dad on the farm. Earl was the catcher for the Hillbilly’s kitten ball (softball) team in 1932 which played against teams from Hubbard, Popejoy and Alden for four to five years. Earl was a member of the Ellis Methodist Country Church north of Buckeye and later transferred to Stavanger Lutheran Church in Garden City.  Earl married Verna (Hegland) Tysdahl in August 1960 and lived in Buckeye. They moved on a farm near Garden City in 1963. He retired from farming in 1979. Later he moved to an apartment in McCallsburg and lived there several years. In 2002 he moved in with his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ella and Denny. He stayed there until he moved to Villa Del Sol Nursing Home on Sept. 30, 2005.

Earl is survived by his daughter, Mary Ella and son-in-law Dennis Beckman of Marshalltown; grandchildren Justin Beckman of Rockwell City, Ryan Beckman of Waterloo, and Meredith (Mark) Spencer of Bondurant; his nieces and nephew, Arlene Miller, William (Marilyn) Engelson, Susie Shade and Betty Engelson; his brother-in-law, Glenn Robinson; and many cousins.

Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Verna; his parents, Oliver and Cleo Engelson; his granddaughter, Tessa Beckman; sister Merna Robinson; brother Cecil; and nephew Rick Engelson.

Lorraine Marie (Uschkrat) Lehmeier was born on Aug. 21, 1929, in Butterfield, Minn., to William and Helen (Syndegard) Uschkrat. She graduated from Ireton High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. She met her husband, Lamoin, while teaching at Union. They were married on Aug. 21, 1948. They resided on the Lehmeier family farm near New Providence until they moved to Hubbard in 1977. She was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard, where she served on the Women’s Guild, the church council, was a Sunday school teacher and served on numerous other organizations. She was a lifelong member of Double VI Club and loved playing bridge. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling and spending winters in Arizona, and was an avid sports fan.

She is survived by her husband, Lamoin; three daughters: Janie (Richard) Herting of Cedar Falls, Linda (Mike) Jacobs of Mequon, Wis., and Connie (Steven) Perry of New Providence; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister Carma (George) Faust of Hubbard; sister-in-law Janet Uschkrat of Bella Vista, Ark.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Lowell Uschkrat.

IOWA FALLS—Duane O. Clark, 80, of Clayton, N.C., and formerly of Iowa Falls, passed away Thursday at his son’s home in Clayton. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. T. J. Norman officiating. Visitation will be from 2 until 7 p.m. Sunday evening with the family present to receive friends between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m. at the Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel. Burial will be at the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.

Duane O. Clark was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Iowa Falls, the son of Charles D. and Charlotte (Mann) Clark. He attended Iowa Falls elementary, junior and high schools, graduating with the class of 1943. After graduating, Duane entered the military on Sept. 16, 1943. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II with the 351st Infantry Regiment of the 88th Division. He was in the following battles and campaigns: Rome Arno, North Apennines and Central Europe. During these battles he earned the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star for bravery, the Purple Heart for wounds received in Italy on July 12, 1944, and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. He was captured by German forces in the Po Valley in October 1944 and was a prisoner of war for more than six months before being liberated in May 1945. He was discharged honorably on Nov. 4, 1945, after recovering from injuries sustained at the German POW camp. Duane returned to the states and worked at Disneyland in California for a few years before returning to Iowa Falls. On March 17, 1967, he was united in marriage to Vivian Lucille Howard at Iowa Falls. To this union a son was born: David Clark. Duane was self-employed as a painting contractor with Brady and Clark Interior Decorating and Paper Hanging from 1959 to 1969, worked for Franklin Manufacturing in Webster City from 1969 to 1971, when he became employed by the Iowa Falls Community Schools as head custodian, retiring in 1993. Duane was a member of the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls, Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188 for more than 55 years, and the Borschel-Schwebke Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8708, both of Iowa Falls.

Duane O. Clark is survived by his son, David R. Clark and wife Lynn of Clayton; one granddaughter, Madelyn Clark of Clayton; one sister, Pat Clark of Paris, France; one sister-in-law, Mary Clark of Marion; nieces Cherie Clark and husband John Vikdal of Cedar Rapids, Jeanie Boisen and family of Dakota Dunes, S.D., and Cindy Watterson and family of Dakota Dunes; and nephews Craig Rohde and family of Dakota Dunes, and Jeff Rohde and family of Dakota Dunes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Charlotte Clark; his wife, Vivian Clark; and one brother, Don Clark.

Beverly Keninger was born on Nov. 25, 1927, in Alden, the daughter of Henry and Eda Mae (Thoms) Christiansen. She graduated from the Alden High School, and on Feb. 9, 1950, she was united in marriage to Joe Keninger at the St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Iowa Falls. Beverly was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ackley and was a CCD teacher for 28 years. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s events, gardening, sewing, Card Club and Coffee Club.

She is survived by her husband, Joe of Ackley; four daughters, Denise Sprain and husband Ron of Ackley, Rita Barnhart and husband Rick of Tulsa, Okla., Jolene Harms and husband Robert of Ackley, and Tracy Keninger of Des Moines; three sons, David Keninger and wife Barb of Ackley, Mark Keninger of Ackley, and Alan Keninger and wife Shari of Newton; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Irwin Christiansen and wife Roberta of Rupert, Idaho, and Dean Christiansen of Ogden, Utah.

Richard was born on Dec. 29, 1934, in Eldora, the son of Carl and Daizy (Farr) Zoske. He attended Alden Community School. On Jan. 30, 1966, he was united in marriage to Jeanette Harding at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls. Richard had been a farmer all of his life and also had worked at Iowa Limestone and Sargents. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette; three sons, John and wife Donna, Dan and wife Traci, and Kurt and a special friend, Robin, all of Alden; five grandchildren, Kari, Loni, Jeremy, Krista and Amber; two great-grandchildren, Brenna and Gabriella; a sister, Barbara Hagie and husband John of Clarion; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Inez Pearl (Reece) Broer was born Dec. 19, 1904, to James and Maggie Belle Reece on a farm in Providence Township, Hardin County. When Inez was 2 years old, her family moved to a farm in Marshall County. At age 10, she moved to a 100-acre farm her father bought southwest of New Providence. In 1911 at age 6, Inez started school and rode a pony to Fairview Country School. In seventh grade, Inez took a test to see if she was ready for high school. She passed, skipped eighth grade and began high school in September 1917 at New Providence. Inez graduated from high school in 1922 at age 17. The first year after graduation she stayed home to help her mother and to care for her 2-year-old brother, Mayo. The next fall, Inez took the train to Oskaloosa and began her studies at William Penn College. Before the end of her first semester, she was called home because her mother’s health was failing. Inez was needed at home to care for her little brother after her mother’s death in January 1924. On Dec. 31, 1925, Inez married Ted Broer of New Providence. They moved to the farm where Lowell and Eunice Broer now live. In 1968, Inez and Ted moved to Eldora. After Ted died in 1984, Inez continued to live in her own house and drove her car to church in New Providence, until age 96, when she moved into Valley View Care Center in Eldora. She was a member of DAR and Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church. During her 100 years, Inez traveled to every state except Alaska. Inez enjoyed crocheting  afghans, reading, playing 500 and bingo.

Inez is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Rogers of Marietta, Ga.; son Lowell and wife Eunice of New Providence; son Lyle and wife Sondra of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Inez was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; her first child, Harold Ernest; brother Mayo; sister Marjorie; and granddaughter Laura Broer.

GRUNDY CENTER—Richard Manly Smith, 73, of Grundy Center, died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2005, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City from complications and injuries sustained as a result of an automobile accident on Nov. 7. Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, with the Rev. Danie l. C. Graham officiating. Private family interment will occur on Monday morning prior to the memorial service at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center, with full military rites provided by the Grundy Center American Legion Post No. 349 and AMVETS Post No. 17. Visitation will be Sunday, Nov. 27, from 4 until 8 p.m., with the family present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church and the National Parkinson’s Foundation.

Richard was born Sept. 6, 1932, in Ames, the son of Manly John and Marguerite (Jeffries) Smith. At the age of 5, Richard and his family moved to Grundy Center, and he received his education there, graduating from Grundy Center High School in 1950. Richard then attended Northwestern University, graduating in 1954. From 1954 to 1956, Richard served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. From there, he attended Drake University, graduating in 1959, with a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy. On Jan. 24, 1965, Richard was united in marriage to Barbara L. Erbe in Boone. After their marriage, the couple made Grundy Center their home. Richard was a longtime owner of the Manly Drug Store in Grundy Center. Over the years he was involved in many development efforts in the community, including speculative homes, multiple housing units, a residential subdivision and mobile home park. He took a leadership role on many boards and commissions. Richard was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, where he served as ruling elder, a member of the chancel choir, and was also involved in long-range planning. He was a member of the Center Theater Board of Directors, the Grundy Center Community Center Commission, and the Grundy Center Rotary Club, where he had served as past president and assistant district governor. Richard was also a member of the Grundy Center Ambassadors, and also the Grundy Center American Legion Post No. 349. Since his retirement in 1999, Richard had several of his most productive years despite the challenges he faced due to Parkinson’s and coronary artery diseases. He built the AmericInn Motel and Suites of Grundy Center and was the managing partner of the AmericInns of Iowa Falls and Webster City. Most recently he was the developer of the Grundy County Welcome Center. Together with his wife, his partner in life and business, he operated “As You Like It” Hallmark Shop in Iowa Falls and Fashion Express ladies apparel store in Grundy Center. Richard was honored by AmericInn International as Innkeeper of the Year in 2001 and by Hallmark Cards on four occasions as recipient of the coveted Retail Excellence Award accorded to the top 200 stores in the country. He was named Citizen of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce in 1996 and Outstanding Senior Presbyterian in 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Smith of Grundy Center; one daughter, Janet Smith Kelleher and husband Dan of Frisco, Texas; one son, Richard Manly Smith II  (Rick) of Frisco, Texas; four grandchildren, Katherine Louise Kelleher, Emily Barbara Kelleher, Sarah Marguerite Kelleher and Daniel Richard Kelleher; and his motherin-law, Ednamay Erbe of Boone.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Manly and Marguerite Smith.

Rita Josephine McGrane was born March 31, 1920, in Elma. As a young child she and her family moved to Waterloo where she attended schools, graduating from  Sacred Heart High School in 1937. Rita then attended and graduated from Gates Business College in Waterloo. On June 30, 1941, she was united in marriage to Edward D. Mashek in Waterloo, where the couple established their home until 1949 when the family moved to Fort Dodge. Rita was a homemaker. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and a very active parishioner of Holy Rosary Church.

Surviving are her children, Joseph and wife Rosanne of Cedar Rapids, Vicki Bailey and husband Dave of Dallas, Ore., Michael and wife Linda of Temecula, Calif., Patrick and wife Darlene of West Des Moines, Rick and wife Mary of Olathe, Kan., Kathy Moore and husband Bruce of Iowa Falls, and Rosie Mashek of Charlotte, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a brother, Clem McGrane of Texarkana, Texas.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Johanna (Powers) McGrane; her husband, Ed; and a son, David.

Charlotte Louise Waterbury was born on Feb. 10, 1920, in Storm Lake, the daughter of Frank and Lucy (Robinson) Waterbury. She graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1937. On Feb. 25, 1940, Charlotte was united in marriage with Lawrence Dagit in Storm Lake. She married Byron Polen on April 17, 1970, in Eldora. She later married Donald McMillen on April 24, 1986, at the Morgan United Methodist Church in Dows. Charlotte was a member of the United Methodist Church in Alden and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed flowers, her garden and pets, sports, fishing and spending time with her family.

Mrs. McMillen is survived by her children, Larry Dagit and wife Sue of Brookline Station, Mo., Cynthia Bell of Fountain Valley, Calif., Frank Dagit and wife Bev of Alden, Bill Dagit and wife Millie of Eldora, Connie Edgerton and husband Richard of St. James, Minn., John Dagit and wife Karleen of Cheyenne, Wyo., Bob Dagit and wife Joleen of Missouri Valley, Byron Dagit and wife Nancy of DePere, Wis., Tom Dagit and wife Kathy of Iowa Falls, Charles McMillen and wife Sharon of Marietta, Ga., and Sharon Monsrud and husband Kerry of St. Paul Park, Minn.; 24 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands, Lawrence Dagit, Byron Polen and Donald McMillen; a daughter, Mary Lu Dagit; and a brother, Charles Waterbury.

WILLIAMS—Everett “Chuck” Thurmond, 82, of Williams, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. A gathering will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Fosters Chapel. Visitation will be before the gathering and a luncheon will follow. Burial will be in the Blairsburg Cemetery at a later date. Foster Funeral Home in Webster City is in charge of arrangements.

Everett Marion Thurmond, son of Henry and Eva Jaynes Thurmond, was born Dec. 30, 1922, in Blairsburg. He attended rural schools east of Blairsburg and graduated from Blairsburg High School. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army - Infantry in the European Theater of Action. Following his discharge, he returned to Williams and started his trucking business. His business was related to gravel delivery and road construction. Chuck was a member of the American Legion Post No. 191 of Webster City.

Chuck is survived by his sisters, Ethel Kunkle of Eagle Grove and Verdelle Correll of Victoriaville, Calif.; several nieces and nephews, including Rod Adams of Webster City, Denny Thurmond and Betty Wilde, both of Eagle Grove; and special friend Bernice Scallon of Williams.

He was preceded in death by brothers Clifford, Lloyd, Ray and Harry Thurmond; sisters Bessie Echelberger, Ada Banks, Leatha Kinzey, Nellie Adams and a sister in infancy.

HAMPTON—Orval W. Knueppel, 81, of Hampton, died of natural causes Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, at Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Karl Bollhagen and Vicar Steven Frank officiating. Burial will be at Hampton Cemetery. The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton is in charge of arrangements.

STERLING, Ill.—Mary Helen Kelsey Peugh, 88, of Sterling, IL, formerly of Iowa Falls, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, at the CGH Medical Center in Sterling. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Sterling, with burial at the Peugh Cemetery, Coleta, IL. The Schilling Funeral Home of Sterling was in charge of arrangements.
