Jesse Keith charged with first degree murder

By Kent Thompson
MANAGING EDITOR
IOWA FALLS

Shots rang out at two locations Friday morning leaving one Iowa Falls man dead and another man arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

The dead man has been identified as Paul Cory, 22, of Iowa Falls. Charged with first-degree murder is Jesse Kyle Keith, 23, also of Iowa Falls.

The incident began around 9 a.m. when police were called to the sound of gunshots in the area of 307/309 Prospect Ave. Minutes later, police were called to 314 Washington Ave., just east of the downtown business district to reports of more gunfire and a man down.

The following is a statement read by Iowa Falls Chief of Police Doug Strike at 4:50 p.m. Friday afternoon. “On June 17, 2005, at approximately 9:15 a.m., Jesse Keith shot and killed Paul Cory with a handgun just outside 314 Washington Ave. Shortly before the shooting, Jesse Keith was observed at 307 and 309 Prospect Ave. pointing a handgun and threatening his girlfriend and several other persons. Several shots were fired at the Prospect address. Jesse Keith left the Prospect address in a white van, still armed with a handgun. A short time later, Keith arrived at 314 Washington Ave. Also present at 314 Washington Ave. were five eyewitnesses. Keith was observed firing several shots from a handgun at Paul Cory, killing him. Keith left the area and was eventually apprehended east of Iowa Falls.

Strike did not answer any questions, saying only the investigation is ongoing and further information would be coming in the near future either from the Iowa Falls Police Department, Hardin County Attorney’s Office or Iowa Attorney General’s Office.

Standoff occurs

The arrest came after a nearly four-hour standoff approximately five miles southeast of Iowa Falls just off of OO Avenue, not far from Cross’ Ford on the Iowa River.

Following the shooting, there were reports saying Keith had fled in a white van. Police and assisting agencies were able to track the vehicle to the area southeast of Iowa Falls where Keith reportedly ran on foot to an area along the edge of the gravel road where the standoff occurred.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that Keith several times pointed the gun to his head and was threatening to kill himself.

The Iowa Falls Police Department, Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Dows Police, Ackley Police, Eldora Police, AMR Ambulance and Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation were among the agencies assisting in the negotiations and capture.

Several law enforcement officers had high-powered rifles and other weapons drawn on the suspect and a state negotiator was brought in to mediate the situation.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., the standoff ended when Keith reportedly put down his weapon and put his hands in the air. He was then apprehended by Iowa State patrolmen who handcuffed him and took him into custody. He was transported to the Hardin County Jail where he is being held on $1 million bond. Hardin County Attorney Rick Dunn said Keith would be arraigned on the first-degree murder charge Saturday morning.

Neighbors hear loud bangs

“I heard gunshots. I was upstairs sleeping and I looked out the window and see a guy drop a clip and load another and continue shooting,” said Dave Peterson, 310 Washington Ave., a next-door neighbor to where the shooting occurred.

Peterson said he was kind of half awake at the time and said he saw Keith take off in a white van with his small daughter.

It was reported that the small child was removed from the van unharmed early in the standoff after Keith fled the vehicle, but that was not confirmed or denied by police.

Keith’s white Dodge Caravan had half of the back window shot out as a well as a bullet hole in the lower passenger side corner. Police did not say if the shots were fired during the pursuit, who fired the shots, or if any occupants were struck by the bullets.

Three occupants at 315 Washington Ave., directly across the street from where the shooting occurred, were home at the time of the gunshots, shortly after 9 a.m.

“I was getting ready to take a shower and heard shots going off — more than three. I thought it was firecrackers. Then I heard a woman scream, “Oh my God! I couldn’t see who was laying on the ground,” said Tim Weismann, who said his view was partially obstructed by a parked vehicle.

Kurtis Green, another occupant of the home at 315 Washington, said he worked with and knew Jesse Keith.

“We got off the third shift at 5:30 a.m. I was sleeping on the couch downstairs. I heard three loud popping noises,” Green said.

“I was pretty good friends with Jesse, I always got along with him,” Green said.

Matt Pates is another resident at 315 Washington. He said he knew both the victim and the accused fairly well.

“I knew Paul and his sister Jody and his brothers Weldon and David. I saw his sister screaming, so I knew it was Paul. He liked to party,” Pates said.

“I knew Jesse too. I used to party with him a little and I’d hang out with Kelsi (Christianson, Keith’s fiancee) when Jesse would go to work. I never expected something like this to happen,” Pates said.

Rodney Sizemore is a next-door neighbor to the west of the house where the shooting occurred.

He said he has known Keith since he moved into the house five or six months ago. “I was getting ready to go to work. I heard the noise and saw him with a gun but thought it was pellet or a paintball gun, but it was too much percussion for something like that,” Sizemore said. “When I looked out the back window I could see a gun  in his hand and heard another pop go off but I couldn’t see a body from where I was,” Sizemore said.

Chris Kenoyer is Jesse Keith’s half-brother. Kenoyer has lived in Des Moines for the past year and works for United Postal Service. He grew up in Iowa Falls and lived on College Avenue for many years. He is 21, two years younger than Keith.

Kenoyer said he received several phone calls telling him about what had happened. “I couldn’t believe it. It was all crazy talk,” he said.

“When I got up here and heard what happened, I said, ‘He went insane. That’s not my brother.’ He’s a calm, gentle guy. He likes to play with dogs and go fishing. He drank a little but had hobbies,” Kenoyer said.

Kenoyer said he didn’t know the victim and didn’t know his halfbrother had a gun. He said Jesse had some rough times.

“We’ve all been in trouble a little, but it’s something you get over,” Kenoyer said.

Sizemore observed, “Jesse was a pretty decent guy. He has his problems like everyone else. I guess he doesn’t have much respect for life.”

In another incident involving Keith, at 2:40 p.m. Thursday, the Iowa Falls Police received a call from an Aplington woman who said she was in need of assistance getting from Wal-Mart to her car because Jesse Keith was harassing her. Police have not said if the harassment call has any relation to Friday’s shooting.
