Robert Joseph Dreier was born Nov. 7, 1919, to William and

of Hubbard for eight years and graduated from New Providence High School in
1938. Bob attended two winter quarters at Iowa State University enrolled in a
herdsman course while helping his father farm.
On Sept. 4, 1941, Bob was united in marriage to Margaret
Meier in Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church. They made their home on the
Meier farm south of Hubbard until Bob was inducted into the Air Force in which
he served 44 months. He received his basic training at Chanute Field to become
an instrument specialist. After graduation he was assigned to the 336 Service
Squadron at Battle Creek, Mich., and was sent to Springfield, Mass., and later
to Camp Stoneman, Calif., where he was shipped out to the Pacific on Aug. 17,
1942. He spent Thanksgiving in Townsville, Australia, and on Dec. 24 was sent to
New Guinea. He spent time on Wake Island, the Philippines and Japan. He was
discharged from the service and arrived home before Christmas of 1945. The
couple lived and farmed on the Meier farm until their retirement.

House fire kills Eldora

Death ruled a homicide

ELDORA
THE CHARRED
remains of the bedroom area of the Brenda Cuevas
home on 9th Avenue in Eldora. Cuevas died in the Saturday blaze. |
An
early morning house fire in Eldora Saturday claimed the life of a north
central Iowa woman.
Neighbors called E-911 regarding a house fire at 606
9th Ave. at about 3:20 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 15. When inside, police
found the body of one person. An autopsy revealed the body was that of
Brenda Cuevas, 39, of Eldora.
Trevor Wiley, 18, of Eldora, lives in the Tamarack
Apartments just south of where the fire occurred. He was the first to
call E-911.
“Me and a friend of mine were sitting in our place
talking, then we heard a loud ‘pop,’ almost like a shotgun. We looked
out the window of my bedroom and saw a fire. We went outside and first
thought it was a bonfire, but then we thought the houses were too close
together, so that’s when I knew the house was on fire and I made the
call. We weren’t sure if anyone was inside and then we heard two more
‘pops’ before police arrived. We were beside the house and heard the
fire alarm going off, but didn’t realize anyone was in the house at the
time. We both couldn’t hear anything inside the house other than the
fire alarm,” Wiley said.
Investigators set up a barricade in front of the
house and spent much of the day Saturday searching for clues. The Eldora
Police Department has had at least one officer guarding the residence
since the fire occurred. The Department of Criminal Investigation, State
Fire Marshal’s Office, State Medical Examiner’s Office and other state
and local officials are investigating the case. Hardin County
authorities were investigating the incident as a suspicious death. Late
Tuesday afternoon, the State Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the
death has been ruled a homicide.
In the early morning hours of May 20, the Jess and
Brenda Cuevas residence, located at 27653 270th St. in rural New
Providence, was struck by fire. The couple have two young daughters
(Nicole and Jami). No one was home at the time of that blaze and
according to Jim Saunders with the State fire Marshal’s Office, the
residence was unoccupied as no utilities were connected to the home. He
added officials were never able to determine the cause of that fire. He
did say that fire originated from the basement of the rural home, but
could not say if the two fires were connected in any way.
According to an incident report filed by the Hardin
County Sheriff’s Office, Brenda Cuevas was “in the process of moving
out” of the home at the time of the May fire.
Regarding the fire this past weekend, Eldora Fire
Chief Bruce Harvey could not comment on the extent of the blaze. He did
note the Eldora Fire Department was the only fire crew on the scene to
extinguish the flames. Eldora Police Chief Dave Twedt said he could not
provide any further details on the case at this point. He also could not
say whether or not law enforcement officials had any suspects.
Authorities could not confirm nor deny the
whereabouts of Jess Cuevas the early morning hours of Oct. 15. They
could also not comment on if J. Cuevas has been questioned in the
investigation.
As of Tuesday afternoon, funeral arrangements for
Cuevas were pending with the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.
Loran and Sharon Balvanz are B. Cuevas’ parents. They
did not care to comment on the case at this time, but said “Brenda was
an outgoing person and will be missed not only by her family members,
but by many in the community too.”
Cuevas was active in volunteer work in both Eldora
and New Providence, with school activities and groups such as the Hardin
County Historical Society.

Eldora grieves with
Cuevas family, questions remain
Published October

NEWS REPORTER
ELDORA
Many people in the Eldora community of 3,000 citizens
are still in shock over the death of 39-year-old Brenda Cuevas. Cuevas’
body was found at 606 Ninth Ave. early Oct. 15, following a report of a
fire at the residence. The State Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Tuesday
that Cuevas’ death was a homicide. They have not released details as to
results that would lead to that conclusion.
“I think many in this community are still troubled
over the developments in this tragedy,” Eldora Mayor Ken Reece said.
“It’s effected everyone in this community one way or another. Many
people who knew Brenda just don’t want to talk about it right now.” The
Cuevas family held a memorial service for Brenda yesterday (Friday)
afternoon at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora.
Authorities have been, for the most part, mum on
answering questions regarding the investigation. Reece spoke with Eldora
Chief of Police Dave Twedt earlier this week and said they were “pretty
positive they are going to solve the case.” The Eldora Police Department
is the lead investigator in Cuevas’ death, assisted by the Division of
Criminal Investigation, State Fire Marshal’s Office, State Medical
Examiner’s Office, Hardin County Sheriff’s Office and other state and
local authorities. So far, no one has been charged in the case. The
cause of the fire remains unknown.
In previous interviews with the
Times-Citizen,
Twedt was tight-lipped about the investigation. He replied, “no comment”
to questions ranging from possible suspects in the case, to the extent
of fire damage in the home.
Trevor Wiley,
18, of Eldora, made the E-911 call for help at about 3:20 a.m. when he
and a friend heard an explosion across the street. Earlier this week,
Wiley said he heard a “loud pop” and two subsequent pops after seeing
the fire start. He compared the first noise to that of a shotgun. He
told the
Times-Citizen he felt
the fire was suspicious from the beginning.
“It was just
weird to listen to. We thought at first a water heater blew up, but when
I heard a “banging” noise from the garage door, it sounded like someone
was either trying to get out or maybe gas containers were blowing up, it
was that loud,” Wiley said.
Wiley lives
across the street in the Tamarack apartment complex and said he didn’t
realize anyone lived at the residence. He has only lived at the
apartments for about a week.
Authorities
treated the death as “suspicious” from the beginning. Last spring, the
rural New Providence home Brenda Cuevas occupied was also struck by
fire. A cause of that blaze was never determined. An Eldora police
officer has been stationed at the Eldora residence since the incident
was reported.
The Rev. David
Splett knew Cuevas for just a short time as she had just recently joined the
Eldora St. Paul Lutheran Church. He confirmed Brenda and her husband,
Jess Cuevas, were in the process of a divorce. The couple has two young
children, Nicole and Jami.
“With the
minimal amount of information that has been given by authorities, it
adds to even more speculation in the city,” Splett said.
He said Cuevas
will be sorely missed throughout the community.
“Brenda was a
very positive, outgoing person who seemed to always have a smile on her
face. She was very involved in the community and school system and was
always enthused. I think it’s very difficult for many right now to
explain their own feelings, just because we know it’s going to be hard
to think we won’t have a person like Brenda in this community anymore,”
Splett said.
Splett added
the family is experiencing a lot of hurt at the moment and is hoping for
a resolution as soon as possible. He noted that despite the pain, the
family is anxious to celebrate her life and faith in the church.
Cuevas was
involved in many city and school activities. She was a member of WINGS
sorority and assisted the local Girl Scouts club. She also volunteered
for the Hardin County Historical Society.
