KEARNEY, Neb. — Elizabeth M. Stratton, 14, of Kearney, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006, at her residence.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney with Rev. Charles Torpey and Rev. Matt Koperski officiating. Interment will be held at the Kearney Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at the church with a prayer vigil at 5:30 p.m. The visitation will continue one hour prior to service times on Thursday, Nov. 2, at the church.

She was born on May 12, 1992, in Ely, Nev., to Joe and Sami (Pickle) Stratton. She grew up in Ely and also lived in Reno, Nev., before moving to Kearney, where she received her education at Northeast Elementary, Sunrise Middle School and Kearney Catholic High School. She was currently a freshman at Kearney Catholic.

 
 

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and helped start the CARE Fund at Good Samaritan Cancer Center. She loved singing, playing music, reading, living strong, rainbows and was special at making the world a better place.

She is survived by her parents; sisters Jessica, Abby and Kaylie Stratton, all of the home; and many other relatives and close friends.

Additional survivors include maternal grandparents, Rod and Gale Stewart of Albuquerque, N.M., and Ralph and Betty Pickle of Wister, Okla.; paternal grandparents, Wayne and wife Anna Mae Stratton of Charles City, Iowa; paternal great-grandparents, Kenneth and Marva Stratton of Charles City and LaVerne Byers of Charles City.

 
 

She was preceded in death by Aunt Vicki Davis, Great Grandfather John Koenigsfeld, Great Grandmother Geneva Byers, and Great Grandmother Mildred Koenigsfeld.

Evelyn Ruth (Halverson) Brown

Evelyn Ruth (Halverson) Brown, 92, of Charles City, passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 30, 2006, from Alzheimer's disease.

Funeral services for Evelyn Brown will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Osage. Pastor Dennis Hansen will officiate. Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery rural Osage.

The family will greet friends an hour before the service on Friday.

Evelyn was born in St. Ansgar on Sept. 27, 1914, graduating from Osage High School. She then attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, getting a teaching certificate and beginning a 29-year teaching career in rural one-room school houses in St. Ansgar, Rock Creek and Knoxville. She also taught in Cedar Falls, Roseville, Minn., Latimer and Marble Rock. In 1942, Evelyn met Perry Brown in Des Moines and they were married three months later on Sept.19, 1942. After WW II, they settled in the Cedar Falls-Waterloo area and had four daughters. While teaching and raising her family, Evelyn continued her education, finally achieving her B.A. from Iowa State Teacher's College in 1961. Evelyn was always very active in the Lutheran church in women's organizations, teaching Sunday school, leading Bible studies, prayer groups and supporting her pastor husband. Evelyn's faith in God was the base for everything in her life. Mother was “Super Woman” before there was a name for it.

Evelyn is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, Rev. Perry L. Brown; two daughters, Perilyn Ruth Brown Olsen and Solveig (Bruce) Swanson; six grandchildren, Rebecca, Eric, Andrew, Meghan, Christopher and Brandon; one great-

grandson, Ian; and a sister Jeanette (Kermit) Halverson.

 
 

Evelyn was preceded in death by two daughters, Carla Brown-Dukes and infant daughter, Paula Jean; three sisters, Olga Halverson, Milly Neuberger and Marian Smalley; three brothers, Harold, Conrad and Bentley Halverson.

Kenneth Hovey, 77, of Charles City, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, at his home.

Funeral services for Kenneth Hovey will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Chaplains Barbara Mann and Ed Bard will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday. Visitation will continue on Friday an hour prior to the service.

Kenneth LaVern Hovey was born June 7, 1929, at Independence, the son of George and Velma (McDonald) Hovey. He was the second of six children. The family moved to Charles City, where he attended school. In his early years, he worked for the Carey Coal Company and the Oliver Corporation for a short time. Kenneth proudly served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953.

On Feb. 18, 1956, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Strassburg at Austin, Minn. Four children, Tim, Lori, Pam and Dan Hovey, were born to this union. Kenneth was employed by Clark Produce, Wachsman Contractors and Takin Freight Line, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 3914 and military order of the Cooties of Charles City.

Kenneth thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor sporting events of hunting and fishing. His deer hunting trips produced several trophy deer from many states. He also loved to pick the wild berries and other fruits in the fall of the year and produced many tasty jellies. Kenneth took great pleasure and pride in providing for his family. He will be best remembered by his family as being strong, courageous, honest and hard working.

 
 

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Kenneth’s life are his devoted and loving wife of 50 years, Kathryn Hovey of Charles City; two sons, Tim (Deb) Hovey and Dan Hovey, both of Charles City; three daughters, Linda (Ron) Apel, Lori Westendorf and special friend Dave Lorenz, and Pam Cook and special friend Tom Saucer, all of Charles City; nine grandchildren, Jamie Cook and special friend Melinda Hoy, Marty Westendorf, Lisa and special friend Kurt Meek, Steve and special friend Aranda Cowell, Chad (Shannon) Apel and Ryan (Holly) Wright; five great-

grandchildren, Jared Cook, Jordan, Caedyn and Logan Apel, and Brett Cagley; a sister, Ruth (Dale) Chestek of Charles City; and two brothers, George (LuJayne) Hovey of Dickinson, Texas, and Raymond Hovey of Charles City; two sisters-in-law, Betty Hovey and Rose Wiggins, both of Charles City; a brother-in-law, Daryl (Mary) Strassburg of Waterloo; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lois Hovey; a brother, Glenn Hovey; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, the late Carl and Rose Strassburg.

Harold Carlson

ROCKFORD — Harold Carlson, 87, of Rockford, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Harold Carlson will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Rockford. Pastor Chuck Wallace will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Rockford. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by Walker-Graper Post 338 American Legion of Rockford.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 3-7 p.m. at the Carlson home, 410 W. Main Ave., Rockford. The visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the service.

Harold Howard Carlson was born on June 19, 1919, in Hadley, Minn., the son of Soren and Gertrude (Effamsen) Carlson. His parents were direct immigrants of Denmark and moved to Marietta, Minn., where Harold graduated from Marietta High School in 1937. His father owned several creameries and Harold worked with his father in the business until he went to college. He graduated from Iowa State University in Ames in 1939 with a degree in Dairy Industries. On Dec. 31, 1941, Harold was united in marriage to Neola Marie Slininger and to this union three children were born: Sharon, Tom and Bruce. Neola passed away in November 1969.

Harold was inducted into the Army Air Force on July 10, 1942, and received an honorable discharge on Nov. 19, 1945. He returned home to Marietta to again work in the dairy business with his father until he became the creamery manager in Rockford. When the creamery closed, Harold and Neola operated the local drug store in Rockford. The store had the town’s only soda fountain and he became known as “Zeke” to the locals. Nearly every child in the area was treated to some kind of ice cream/soda concoction at the counter. Harold and Neola sold the drug store and moved to Mason City, where he became the ice cream maker for Birdsall’s.

Harold was united in marriage on Nov. 5, 1970, to Marcella (Drury) Carlson and embraced her three children into his life: Janice, Deanna and Marilyn. He took up golfing at the age of 60 and it became his passion. Weather permitting, he golfed nearly every day until this past season, when his health prevented him from hitting the course. He had a life-long love of music, playing the trombone in the Marietta Community Band as it traveled from town to town on hayracks in the 1930s. He loved big band music, dancing, traveling, playing cards and spending time with family. Until his health prevented it, he was an announcer at KCMR. He was active in his church and community, serving on boards and committees throughout his adult life.

 
 

Harold is survived by his wife of nearly 36 years, Marcella; six children, Sharon (Earl) Gwin, Tom Carlson, Janice (Russell) Kornegor, Deanna (Jim) Mallo, Bruce (Terry) Carlson and Marilyn (Charles) Johnson; 16 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eva (Paul) Ruud, Ruth (Lyle) Olson, Martha (Dennis) Hatfield; and a sister-in-law, Jane (David) Carlson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Neola; and three brothers, Art, Carl and David.

Lorna C. Potratz, 92, of Charles City, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Lorna Potratz will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Rev. Carl Ries, pastor will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Lorna Celia Cooney Potratz was born July 26, 1914, the daughter of Adam and Celia (Freidman) Roethler at Ionia. She received her education from the Ionia and New Hampton Community Schools. On May 5, 1941, she was united in marriage to Leslie Cooney at New Hampton. Leslie died on July 25, 1951. Lorna married Donald Potratz on Jan. 30, 1965, in Nebraska. Lorna was a homemaker until after the death of Leslie, when she was employed at J.C. Penny and United Telephone Company. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Her interests included sewing, making quilts, playing cards, gardening and spending time with friends and family.

Living family members include her husband, Donald Potratz of Charles City; two children, Willa (Harvey) Brasel of New Hampton and Roger (Ruth) Cooney of Maple Grove, Minn; nine grandchildren, Lora (Trace) Dungey, Kevin Tenge, Lisa (Kevin) Flick, Rochelle (Joe) Giuliani, Ronda (Matt) Stelljes, Robert Cooney, Karen (Jerry) Wilkenson, Suzanne (Bill) Tretanier and Rick Cooney; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leslie Cooney; a son, Gordon Cooney; a grandson, Jimmy Cooney; and one brother, Oscar Roethler.

Evelene Garden, 88, of Charles City, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, at Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Helen Evelene Elliott Brewer Borchers Helgen Garden was born Nov. 19, 1917, at Sterling, Colo., the daughter of John and Helen (Clem) Elliott. During her childhood, she lived in numerous locations in the United States, graduating from Gilman High School in Gilman, Ill., business college at the University of Illinois and beauty school in Olney, Ill. On Aug. 6, 1936, she married Verl H. “Tuck” Brewer at Gilman, Ill. To this union, a son, Max, was born. She and Verl later divorced. She then married Orville Borchers on June 12, 1946. A daughter, Candice, was born to this union. Orville died in 1964. Evelene married Virgil Helgen in October of 1965 and, after his death, married James Garden of Charles City in October 1993. She worked for many years as a beauty operator. Her memberships included the Senior Citizens, Senior Citizens Fun Band and Republican Women. Evelene enjoyed traveling, animals, dancing, music, politics and having a good conversation with friends. She thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren and looked forward to spending time with them.

Living family members include a son, Max (Donna) Brewer of Naples, Fla.; three step-children, Jamie (Mike) Reicherts of Greene, Tracy (Bruce) Wingert of Fountain, Minn., and Chris (Lisa) Garden of Charles City; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren

Robert W. "Bob" Slack

WATERLOO — Robert W. "Bob" Slack, 82, of Waterloo and formerly a resident of Chickasaw County, died at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo on Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, due to chronic obstructive lung disease.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Kimball Avenue United Methodist Chuch in Waterloo. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Bob was born on Aug. 10, 1924, in Bassett to Walter E. and Maude A. (Young) Slack. He graduated from Nashua High School in 1941. On Sept. 26, 1943, he was married to Merna L. Richardsat First Methodist Church in .Nashua

Bob dairy farmed in Chickasaw County for 30 years until 1974. He later moved to Waterloo, where he was a self-employed carpenter, retiring in 1989.

He was a member of Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church.

Bob is survived by his wife Merna Slack of Waterloo; two daughters Sharon (Gary) Longhorn of Waterloo and Linda (William) Ferguson of Davenport; grandchildren Leslie (Jeff) Balvanz of Gilbertville, Janel (Joel) Vandemore of Geneseo, Ill., Sandra (Chuck West) Longhorn of Little Rock, Ark., Marta (David Drum) Ferguson of Columbia, Mo. and Matthew (Holly) Ferguson of Woodbury, Minn; and great-grandchildren Adam and Jessica Arnold of Gilbertville, Emma and Mia Vandemore of Geneseo, Clara Faye Ferguson of Columbia and Benjamin and Hannah of Woodbury.

 
 

He was preceded in death by his sister Echo B. Bark.

Henry J. Becker

Henry J. Becker, 94, of Charles City, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Henry Becker will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Henry Joseph Becker was born Jan. 15, 1912, south of Greene, the son of John Balthazar and Catherine (Dahmer) Becker. He was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church, Vilmar. His parents were immigrants of Germany. Henry was the last surviving member of this first generation German immigrant family. His father, seeking a better life for his family, came to New York in early 1900. By 1904, through hard work, Henry’s father had saved enough money to bring his wife and five young children to America. They lived in Nebraska and Ohio, working and saving until they were able to move to Greene, where they purchased farm land. In 1915, the family moved north of Charles City, on the Rotary Park Road.

Henry graduated from Floyd Consolidated School in 1930. After graduation, he moved to Lawton, Okla., where he worked as a carpenter, building Fort Sill. Missing family and farming, Henry returned to Iowa. On Jan. 4, 1935, Henry and Frances L. Ayers were united in marriage. To this union, four children were born. In the early 1940s, they purchased a farm 10 miles north of Charles City, where they became very successful raising crops, poultry and livestock. Retiring in the early ‘80s, they moved to an acreage two miles north of Floyd. Frances died in 1992 and Henry moved to Charles City in 1998.

Henry is survived by his four children, Marjorie (Ray) Stoncypher of Floyd, Marlene Reints of Cedar Falls, James (Linda) Becker of Windsor, Colo., and Lorna (David) Scrimger of Charles City; 10 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

 
 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 57 years; three brothers, Walter, George and John Becker; and six sisters, Katheryn Brinkman, Mollie Rieken, Marie Rowzee, Lela Dunlap, Elizabeth Carter Kirkendall and Dorothy Mullarky Buche.

Carol ‘Joanie’ Duffield

Funeral Services for Carol “Joanie” Duffield, 70, of 5 Bird Circle, Charles City, and formerly of Greene, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, with Pastor Val Swinton and Pastor Kent Sovine officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8, and an hour before services on Thursday at the Funeral Chapel.

Carol JoAnn Figgins was born on Dec. 16, 1935, in rural Pocahontas, a daughter of Val Eugene and Pauline Laura (Craig) Figgins, and died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

She received her education in the Mason City public schools and, as a young lady, was employed as a nurse’s aide at Mercy Hospital in Mason City. On Sept. 15, 1958, she was united in marriage to James Arthur Duffield in Canton, S.D. In 1964, they made their home in Greene, where she was employed by the Candle Shop, Sonny’s and the Greene Inn. She was last employed by Bill’s Foods, until she was forced to retire in 1998 after being diagnosed with cancer.

Her interests included crocheting, knitting and going to rummage sales. Her family, especially her grandchildren, was her life and joy. She walked the Relay For Life every year up to the end.

Living family members include her loving husband Jim of Charles City; her daughter, Connie (Dan) Glandon of Charles City; three sons, Terry Taylor of Springfield, Ore., Del Duffield of Charles City and David (Debra) Duffield of San Diego; six grandchildren, Cody Duffield, Lindsey Glandon, Joshua Duffield, Cassandra Glandon, Jesse Duffield and Jason Glandon; her sister, Betty (Gordon) Pennington of Black Water, Mo., sister-in-law, Martha Starkey of Charles City, and daughter-in-law, Karen Hughes of Osage.

 
 

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Douglas James Duffield; and one brother, Bill Figgins.

George T. Paulson, 94, of 101 Hilltop Dr., Charles City, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St. in Charles City, with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City. Military rites will be accorded by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

George T. Paulson was born in Fargo, N.D., the oldest of six children to Peter and Isabella (Temperley) Paulson. When he was 2 years old, the family moved to Aitkin, Minn, where George received his education in the schools of Aitkin County. From 1933-1934, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in California. George moved to Iowa in 1934, where he worked for farmers in the area, picking corn by hand. He later went to work for the Walsh Manufacturing Co. in Charles City as a shipping and receiving clerk, retiring in 1977 after 36 years with the company. In World War II, George served in the weapons section of the Army Engineers at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

On May 14, 1938, George was united in marriage to Ila Mae Vorhes in Waterloo. One son, Raymond Lee was born to them. Ila died on April 27, 1960. On July 15, 1961, he was united in marriage to Elnora (Larson) Villnow in Plato, Minn.

 
 

George was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was an usher, served on the Evangelism Board and delivered Sunday church bulletins to the nursing homes. George was a life member of the American Legion, where he held the local positions of historian, commander and adjutant for 34 years. For 23 years, Geroge served on the honor squad, folding hundreds of flags for military funerals, and worked for years on the membership committee as well as being the oratorical chairman. He served as the American Legion fourth district commander, the district oratorical, on the national security committee and was an Iowa department vice-commander. George was a member of Kiwanis, Amvets, 40 et 8, Senior Citizens, Heritage Club, a life member of the Floyd County Historical Society, a past member of the Toastmasters and Odd Fellows.

In retirement, he enjoyed being with family and friends, especially the grandchildren. George also enjoyed working in the garden and yard, playing cribbage and doing volunteer work with the American Legion, Meals on Wheels, Kiwanis and the Emerson toy program. He was commissioner at Floyd County Memorial Hospital for nine years, where for many years he dressed as Santa Claus for the employees’ children. George was known as an authority on American flag etiquette, and did many flag programs for schools and other organizations. In 1990, he was chosen as Charles City Man of the Year.

In November 2000, a veteran’s museum opened in Branson, Mo. Within the museum are 50 life-size bronze statues of Army veterans from World War II, representing all 50 states. George Paulson represents the state of Iowa, which made George feel very humble, but proud his name was used. In November 2003, George was honored for 44 years of service, placing flag holders on veterans’ gravesites and making sure on every Memorial Day there were flags placed on the graves.

 
 

George is survived by his wife Elnora; one son, Raymond (Diann) Paulson of Hugo, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Corinne (Gerald) Schauer of Pine River, Minn.; one stepson, Robert Villnow of Glencoe, Minn.; three grandchildren; three great-

grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grand-

children and step-great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Elsie Paulson of St. Paul, Minn.; one brother, Peter Paulson of Aitkin, Minn.; and many other relatives and friends.

 
 

He was preceded in death by his first wife Ila; his parents; two brothers, Clifton and Chester; one sister, Helen Dragovich; and one step-daughter-in-law, Anita Villnow.

Henry J. Becker, 94, of Charles City, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Henry Joseph Becker was born Jan. 15, 1912, south of Greene, the son of John Balthazar and Catherine (Dahmer) Becker. He was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church, Vilmar. His parents were immigrants of Germany. Henry was the last surviving member of this first generation German immigrant family. His father, seeking a better life for his family, came to New York in early 1900. By 1904, through hard work, Henry’s father had saved enough money to bring his wife and five young children to America. They lived in Nebraska and Ohio, working and saving until they were able to move to Greene, where they purchased farm land. In 1915, the family moved north of Charles City, on the Rotary Park Road.

Henry graduated from Floyd Consolidated School in 1930. After graduation, he moved to Lawton, Okla., where he worked as a carpenter, building Fort Sill. Missing family and farming, Henry returned to Iowa. On Jan. 4, 1935, Henry and Frances L. Ayers were united in marriage. To this union, four children were born. In the early 1940s, they purchased a farm 10 miles north of Charles City, where they became very successful raising crops, poultry and livestock. Retiring in the early ‘80s, they moved to an acreage two miles north of Floyd. Frances died in 1992 and Henry moved to Charles City in 1998.

Henry is survived by his four children, Marjorie (Ray) Stoncypher of Floyd, Marlene Reints of Cedar Falls, James (Linda) Becker of Windsor, Colo., and Lorna (David) Scrimger of Charles City; 10 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

 
 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 57 years; three brothers, Walter, George and John Becker; and six sisters, Katheryn Brinkman, Mollie Rieken, Marie Rowzee, Lela Dunlap, Elizabeth Carter Kirkendall and Dorothy Mullarky Buche.

Pauline Jonie Vala was born Aug. 7, 1913, the daughter of Edwald and Marie (Marzen) Nikolas in Grand Meadow, Minn. She graduated from Marble Rock High School in 1932 and was the valedictorian of her class. On Nov. 28, 1935, she was united in marriage to Charles Vala at Roseville.

Pauline was a farm wife and was employed at Dean Jewelers for a period of time. Charles and Pauline farmed near Oakwood for many years until retirement and moving to Charles City. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Circle and the Women’s Club. Her interests included playing cards, flowers, gardening, cooking, canning and spending time with her family. Pauline will always be remembered as a hard worker and a true farm wife.

Living family members include two grandchildren, Kurt Vala of Northfield, N.H., and Sheila (Lundy) Anderson of Fairfield; two great-grandchildren, Spencer Vala and Ellie Anderson; two sisters, Betty (Russell) Ewoldt of Plymouth, Minn., and Francys Klages of Charles City; two brothers, Eugene Nikolas of Osage and Earl (Jeanette) Nikolas of Greene; and a daughter-in-law, Pam Vala of Clear Lake.

Donald William Boekemeier was born March 8, 1915, the son of William and Martha (Hubbard) Boekemeier, in Floyd County. He graduated from Floyd High School. On Sept. 9, 1938, he was united in marriage to Lucille Perrin at Rockford. They farmed all their lives southwest of Charles City. Don was a member of West Saint Charles United Methodist Church, where he was a church trustee, township trustee and member of Farm Bureau. His interests included farming, coon hunting, wood working, playing cards, watching sports, spending time with his family, and most of all, just enjoying life.

Living family members include a son, David (Peggy) Gillespie of Amery, Wis.; three grandchildren, Russell (Ronda) Boekemeier, Marie (Doug) Frenz and Dan Gillespie; three great-grandchildren, Curtis Boekemeier, Anthony Frenz and Stephanie Frenz.

STACYVILLE — Herbert J. Hemann, 83, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with Msgr. John Hemann and Rev. David Hemann officiating. Burial was in Visitation Cemetery in Stacyville.

Herbert Hemann was born on Jan. 12, 1923, in Union Township, Mitchell County, to John and Mary (Gerber) Hemann. He was united in marriage to Irene Mueller on Aug. 25, 1948, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer. Herbert was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and a lifelong member of Visitaton Church.

He enjoyed farming and hours that were spent in his woodworking shop. Herbert will be remembered for his strong faith, love of his family, work ethic and honesty.

Herbert is survived by his wife Irene of Staceville; and children Vivian (Bart) McDonough of Kellogg, Minn., Steven of Moravia, Harvey (Diane) of Staceyville, Susan (Jack) VanLaero of Rockford, Norbert (Marybeth) of Staceyville, Leonard (Carol) of Linden, Galen (Audrey) of Rose Creek, Minn., Colette (Steve) Koebrick of Charles City, Maureen (Duane) Wegner of Eyota, Minn., Yvonne (Todd) Braun of Kasson, Minn., Andrew (Patty) of Stacyville, Delores (Kevin) Koster of St. Ansgar and Kathleen (Tim) Bruggeman of St. Ansgar. He is also survived by 41 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Alfred Hemann and sister, Helen Falda, both of Stacyville; and sister Marie Borchard of Mason City.

He was preceeded in death by a son, Adrian; his parents, John and Mary (Gerber) Hemann; and two brothers, Clarence and Roman.

Edward Lanny Jacobson was born June 13, 1939, at Charles City, the son of Leonard and Francis (Reisner) Jacobson. He received his education at Charles City. On Sept. 19, 1959, he was united in marriage to Darlys DeVries at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Edward worked for 35 years in the foundry at White Farm Equipment company. He liked to collect antiques and would call himself a “junker.” Sunday afternoons would find him watching his favorite football team, the Green Bay Packers. Edward’s greatest joy, however, was his grandchildren and he always looked forward to being part of their lives.

Living family members include four children, Jody Jacobson of Charles City, and Kevin Jacobson, Terri Santee and Randy (Andrea) Jacobson, all of Mason City; six grandchildren, Michael, Gerrot, Lucas, Keith, Corey and Alex Jacobson; a brother, Lyle (Edna) Jacobson of Canon City, Colo.; and a sister, Doris Kneisel of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife on Dec. 7, 1993; a son-in-law, Eric Santee; and several sisters.

Doris L. Nash, 94, of Charles City, Iowa died Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, at home in Charles City after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, at First Congregational Church, 502 N. Jackson St. in Charles City, with Pastor Phil Corr officiating. Interment will be in the Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. The visitation will continue one hour prior to Doris’s services Friday at the church.

She was born April 11, 1912, in the Burr Oak, farm home of her parents, Alva J. and Mary (Abrahamson) Stead. She received her elementary education in the rural one room “Rollins School” north of Burr Oak and attended high school in Decorah and Canton, Minn. She married Arthur J. Nash on June 6, 1930, in the Stead family farm home near Burr Oak. They operated the Nash farm near Burr Oak until 1960, when they moved to Cedar Rapids. She attended a school of cosmetology there, and was employed as a beautician in Killians Department Store in Cedar Rapids, and then for several years operated her own beauty shop near Solon.

She closed her beauty shop and retired when her husband retired, and they moved to Canton, Minn., in 1982, and then in 1994 to Charles City. In retirement, she received training in oil painting and produced many beautiful paintings that now decorate walls in the homes of her children, grandchildren and others. Her primary interests in life were her family and her church. She, along with her husband, was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church in Canton, Minn., with brief periods of membership in churches in Cedar Rapids and Charles City.

 
 

She is survived by her twin brother Donald of Mabel, Minn.; two sons, the Rev. Arthur (wife Linda) of Ft. Madison and Donald (wife Maurine) of Lady Lake, Fla.; a daughter, Gwenyth (husband J.C.) Tangen of Charles City; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur John Nash; an infant brother, John Alva; her brother, Loring; and grandson, Joel David Nash.

Terri Jo Santee was born May 22, 1963, at Charles City, the daughter of Edward and Darlys (DeVries) Jacobson. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1981 and from Hamilton Business College in 1983. On April 29, 1989, she was united in marriage to Eric Santee at Nashua. They lived in Clear Lake for many years prior to moving to Mankato, Minn. On Sept. 20, 2004, Eric died as the result of an automobile accident. Terri continued living in Mankato until May of 2006 when, for health reasons, she relocated to Mason City. She worked as a customer service representative for Wells Fargo and for Principal Financial Group. Her interests included watching NASCAR and attending hockey games. Terri had a special kinship with her dog Bear and enjoyed going on walks with him.

Living family members include a sister, Jody Jacobson of Charles City; two brothers, Kevin Jacobson and Randy (Andrea) Jacobson both of Mason City; and several nephews and nieces.

WELLINGTON, Fla. — Diana Linn Hawbaker, 54, of Wellington, Fla. and formerly of Charles City, passed away on Oct. 8, 2006, after struggling with lung cancer.

Diana was born to the late Alene and Floyd Hawbaker on April 25, 1952. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Clayton Jay. She is survived by two sisters, Joanne Thorton of Mt. Pleasant and Pamela Rausch of Newton; and one brother, Gary Hawbaker of Boise, Idaho. She is also survived by her three children, Shanan Maisano, Patrick Hageman and Jason Hageman; and four grandchildren, Bailey, Brenan and Breana Maisano and Jefferson Hageman.

A memorial service was held on Oct. 14, 2006, at 5 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in West Palm Beach, Fla. Memorial donations may be sent to the Maisano Family at 2245 Amesbury Ct., Wellington, FL 33414.

Kimberly Joy Grimm was born Feb. 11, 1973, at Charles City, the daughter of Roger and Judy (Holm) Grimm. She graduated from Riceville High School in 1991, attended Waldorf College for two years and graduated from Wartburg College in 1995. Kimberly more recently completed the Radiology Program at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minn., and was currently enrolled in the MRI Internship Program. In March of 2000 Kimberly was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Thrombotic Thombocytopenia Purpura (TTP).

In a brochure expressing her appreciation for blood donors, Kimberly described herself: “My personality is the type that is very determined, thankful and most grateful to all the surrounding support. I am athletic, love to play sports, enjoy the simple things, like a true smile and a ground ball at shortstop. I have grown in many areas and without donors, I wouldn’t have any of this. Thank you. Life is short, have faith, family and fun and live it with a ZEST. God has blessed me with the opportunity to show my appreciation, share a little about my story, and to most of all, encourage blood donations. Thank you kindly for the courage.”

Jerome F. ‘Jerry’ Pitz

MUKWONAGO, Wis. — Jerome F. “Jerry: Pitz Of Walworth, Wis., passed away after a short and courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Janesville, Wis. He was 65 years old. Jerry was born in Ionia, Iowa., on Nov. 29, 1940, the son of Virgil and Madonna (nee Green) Pitz.

On May 25, 1961, he married Connie Rex at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Jerry owned and operated a nursery and landscaping business in Darien, Wis. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Harvard, Ill., Pheasants Forever & Ducks Unlimited. Jerry was an avid Chicago Bears fan and he loved pheasant hunting and golfing.

Survivors include his wife Connie; his daughters Jacqueline (Mike) Porter of Rolling Meadows, Ill., Rhonda (Daniel Jr.) Kazy-Garey of Harvard, Ill., Teresa (Joe) Romdenne of Mukwonago and Melissa (Kyle) Richards of Hartford, Wis.; a brother Robert Pitz of Kellogg, Iowa; his grandchildren Bryan and Heather Porter, Danny, Matt and Jenny Kazy-Garey, Brooke and Emily Romdenne and Alex, Jason and Tyler Richards; his faithful companion and hunting partner Boyd; other relatives and friends.

His parents and a brother Larry Pitz preceded him in death.

Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home, 315 Main St., Mukwonago, Wis. Burial will follow at Walworth Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family would be appreciated.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, at St. John Evangelical Church, 200 S. Main St. in Charles City with the Rev. David A. Werges officiating. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City with military respects provided by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

HAMPTON — Zada Evelyn Erickson, 86, of Hampton, passed away Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City of natural causes.

Jack Edmund Ferguson, the son of William Edmund and Jennie Johanah (Obermeier) Ferguson, was born on Aug. 2, 1926, in Waterloo. He graduated from Charles City High School among the Class of 1945, and resided his entire life in the Charles City area.

On Jan. 1, 1945, Jack was inducted into the U.S. Navy at NTS Great Lakes, Ill., and served his country aboard the U.S.S. Clay during WWII. After honorably and faithfully completing his military duties, Jack was formally discharged on Oct. 22, 1946, from the U.S. Naval Receiving Station in Boston.

 
 

Jack was united in marriage to Elsie Katherine Hinz on June 13, 1970, in Mason City, and the couple became the proud parents of a son, Scott.

Many residents of Charles City will well-remember Jack as an active person in the community. He was a meter reader for Iowa Public Service for 41 years, retiring in 1990.

Jack was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he offered assistance as an usher, served on the church board and sang in the choir. His memberships also included the American Legion, the VFW and the Knights of Pythias, all of Charles City.

 
 

Jack was often called upon by relatives and friends to assist them with his talent as a handyman.

Those left to cherish Jack’s memory include his devoted wife, Elsie Ferguson of Charles City; and his son, Scott and Elizabeth Ferguson of Nashville.

Preceding Jack in death are his parents and a half-brother and half-sister.

Donald R. Laun

MODESTO, Calif. — Donald R. Laun, of Modesto, Calif., and formerly of Charles City, passed away on Nov. 19, 2006, at the age of 82.

Visitation will be held today from 6-9 p.m. and the service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m.; both at Colonial Chapel-Franklin & Downs. Immediately following the chapel service, another service will be held at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Donald was born June 10, 1924. He was an educator, teacher and counselor for Modesto City schools from 1965-1986. Mr. Laun was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, a member of Lions Breakfast Club and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

He is survived by his daughters, Gale Fox of Virginia, Ann Stokes of San Diego and Sue Cipponeri of Modesto; brother Dean C. Laun of Modesto; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and loving companion Evelyn Livingston of Modesto.

He was preceded in death by his wife Joan M. Laun.

Geneva May Martin

Funeral services for Geneva May Martin, 99, of 127 Cedar Terrace North and formerly of Greene, will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.

Geneva May Martin was born March 11, 1907, in Union Township, Floyd County, a daughter of George and Mary Elizabeth (Ruffridge) Barth, and died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

She was baptized on Sept. 8, 1909, and confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church on April 9, 1922. She received her education in the Floyd County Country School and attended Greene High School.

She was united in marriage to Ted O. Martin on Sept. 6, 1928, at the Methodist church in Waterloo, and to this union were blessed two sons: Paul Gene and Duane Robert. Geneva returned to Greene in 1939, where she was employed by Greene Produce Company. She later worked for Belmond Mfg. in Charles City, and did housekeeping for families in the area.

At the age of 91, Geneva moved to Charles City, where she worked as a foster grandparent for three years. She enjoyed the years being a foster grandparent. She played bingo at the Senior Center and playing cards with her friends. She liked to garden, but most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

 
 

Living family members include her son: Duane Robert (Bonnie) Martin of Charles City; eight grandchildren; 10 great-

grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son Paul Gene Martin (2000); her parents; six brothers; and five sisters.

COMPTON, Ill. — Alan H. Krumlinde, age 58, of Compton, Ill., and formerly of Charles City, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, in Mendota Community Hospital of an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 25, at 11 a.m. at Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St. in Rochelle, Ill., with Rev. Steve Boothe officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Unger-Horner. On Friday, Nov. 25, from 4-8 p.m., friends may call at the family home at 420 Cherry Street in Compton, Ill.

Alan was born on Aug. 9,1948 in Charles City, the son of Richard and Loan (Crane) Krumlinde. He married Maureen K. Mayfield on Sept. 8, 2001, in Compton. He was employed in the sales and distribution of the Homes and Farm Magazine and was a member of the Crossroads Community Church in Rochelle and the Mendota Elks Club.

Survivors include his wife Maureen Mayfield of Compton; a stepson: Frank (Shara) Laccone of Kingsland, Ga.; four stepdaughters: Beth Rexford of Clare, Ill., Leah Fultz of Farmville, Va., Rachel (Dan) Vinyard of Rochelle, Ill., and Anna (Larry) Olson of Montpelier, Va; two brothers: Ivan Krumlinde and Jack Krumlinde of Charles City; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Graveside service and burial will take place Sunday, Nov. 26, at 1 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Bernita Alberta Bruns Guenther was born in Readlyn, Bremer County, Iowa, on July 24, 1916, to Carl and Louise Becker Bruns. On July 3, 1938, she was married to Harold Ernest Guenther. She retired from Commercial Bank and Trust, and was a long-time member of St. John. Her devotion to Hope House was unending.

Survivors include her beloved sister, Ruth Hanson of Charles City; daughter Kathryn Christenson and children and grandchild, Mark and Carolynn Christenson and Hannah Grace, and Matthew and Nancy Christenson; son Charles Guenther (Katherine) and children and grandchild, Julie Elizabeth Monroe (Chad) and Kaylee Elizabeth, and David Carl; and daughter Elizabeth Sietsema (Orv) and children Maureen and Michael and grandchildren Alycia Elizabeth and Kyle Michael.

Her husband Harold, sister Florine and her parents preceded her in death.

Memorials are suggested for Hope House in Charles City or breast cancer research.

Angel Hinders

Angel Hinders, 8-month-old daughter of David and Crystal (Dugan) Hinders, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Angel Hinders was born prematurely March 18, 2006, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. As a result, she had many complications and numerous hospitalizations. On Oct. 24, 2006, Angel was again admitted to the University of Iowa Hospital, where she remained until she passed away.

Along with her parents Angel is survived by a brother, Dawson, at home; paternal grandfather, Doug (Sherri) Hinders of Osage; paternal grandmother, Haila Reinhardt of Charles City; maternal grandparents, Mike and Sandra Dugan of Charles City; paternal great-grandmother, Marilyn Hinders of Clarksville; and maternal great-grandfather, Archie Ingersoll of Charles City.

Hazel Marie Horn Lynch was born Sept. 11, 1914, at Charles City, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Vogt) Horn. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1932. On Oct. 23, 1936, she was united in marriage to John Lynch at Charles City. For many years, they owned and operated Johnnies Tavern in Rudd and later Johnnies Caf/ and Truck Stop at Swan River, Minn. John died on Dec. 12, 1972. After his death, Hazel moved back to Charles City. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Jude Circle, Rosary Society and the Senior Citizens. Hazel liked to do needlework and go out for coffee and visit her friends.

Living family members include a sister, Iva Volbrecht of Wichita, Kan.; a brother, Harold Horn of Grinnell; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Howard Horn; and three sisters, Lillian Mark, Helen Miller and Ida Mrotzek.

Duane Garman

Duane Garman, 73, of Charles City, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, at his home.

A funeral Mass for Duane Garman will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Msgr. Russell Bleich and Rev. Carl Ries will concelebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Duane Sylvester Garman was born July 19, 1933, in Stilson, the son of Sylvester and Ann (Bleich) Garman. He graduated from the Britt High School in 1952, Iowa State Teachers College in 1956 and received his Masters Degree from the University of Northern Colorado. While at Iowa State Teachers College, he was the starting third baseman. Duane proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On June 14, 1958, he was united in marriage to Jeannine Loftus at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Ft. Dodge. Garman began his teaching career as head football and basketball coach at Garner. In 1964, he came to Charles City, where he was the head basketball coach, sophomore football coach and taught drivers education. In 1982, he moved to the middle school where he taught physical education and coached until his retirement in 1994.

Duane was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, served as president of the Parish Council and on the Archdiocesan Board of Education. He was a lector, communion minister, and completed the Lay Ministry Formation program of the archdiocese. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was involved with teaching RCIA classes, RENEW and “Meal In The Upper Room.” Duane was a member of the National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association and Elks Lodge. His interests included participating in town team sports, woodworking, golfing, handball, playing cards and gardening. Duane took special interest in his family and always looked forward to the time he could spend with them.

Living family members include his wife Jeannine Garman of Charles City; three children, Crystal (Tracy) Crocker of Eden Prairie, Minn., Scott (Connie) Garman of Alpharetta, Ga., and Cheryl (Tony) Trainer of Algona; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, Merle (Teresa) Garman of Ames.

Willis Baldwin

Willis Baldwin, 83, of Charles City, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006, at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Willis “Willie” Neal Baldwin was born March 7, 1923, at Charles City, the son of Edmond and Faith (Day) Baldwin. He graduated in 1941 from Charles City High School, where he played on the basketball and track teams. Willie proudly served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946. On April 16, 1953, he was united in marriage to Marlys Carpenter at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Hampton. He worked for 50 years at the Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company, where he was a tool designer. Willie was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, V.F.W., American Legion, Moose Lodge and the YMCA.

His interests included roller skating and photography in his early years, fishing, golfing, playing cards and ping pong, bird watching, cartoon illustrating and bowling, having been inducted into the Charles City Men’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Willie also redesigned the City Improvement Association clock in Central Park. He always enjoyed his patio and took special pride in his lawn care. Family was always important to Willie and he looked forward to spending time with them all especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He always looked forward to taking his family “up north.”

Living family members include his wife, Marlys Baldwin of Charles City; four children, Jeff (Diane) Baldwin of Mason City, Becky Miller of Minnetonka, Minn., Cathy (Kevin) Snow of Rochester, Minn., and Mike (Tina) Baldwin of Mankato, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Matthew, Stefanie and Steven Baldwin, Erin (Kyle) Mays, Callie and Ryan Miller, Kari Snow, and Sydney and Trevor Baldwin; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Mays and Raylin Miller; a brother, Dwight Baldwin of Pennsylvannia; two sisters, Lois Newman of Charles City and Helen (Roger) Hirsch of Rockwell; and three sisters-in-law, Joy Baldwin of Greeley, Colo., Mary Ann Hebert-Baldwin of Charles City and Claudette Baldwin of Osage.
