Helen E. Ferch

INDEPENDENCE — Helen E. Ferch, 90, of Independence, died Saturday afternoon, Jan. 8, 2011, at East Towne Care Center in Independence.

Helen was born on April 7, 1920, in Charles City, the daughter of Carl and Gladys (Fredrick) Nelson.

She attended the Charles City Schools and was united in marriage to Max Leo Ferch on March 2, 1944, in Seattle, Wash.

She is survived by her children, Judy Ann (Audie) Mills, of Waterloo, and Rosemary (David) Kayser, of Independence; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Frederick C. Nelson, of Lincoln, Neb., and Robert G. Nelson, of Fort Worth, Texas. She lived for many years in Waterloo before entering the nursing home in Independence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, where friends may call from 9 a.m. until services Tuesday. Amy Mitchell

Amy Mitchell, 52, of Charles City, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at the Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A memorial Mass for Amy Mitchell will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Elynor Lou (McKillips) Friend

PORTAGE, Wis. — Elynor L. Friend, 69, of Portage passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011.

Memorial services will be held at the Moundville United Methodist Church, W5501 County Rd. O, Endeavor, Wis., at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 16.

She was born in Beloit on June 15, 1941, a daughter of Harold and Geneieve (Floyd) McKillips. Ellie graduated from South Beloit High School and married Jerry Friend on June 27, 1959. Together they raised four children.

Ellie was a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxilary, enjoyed the Red Hats Society, attending the Moundville United Methodist Church and truly loved treasure hunting at local rummage sales, Goodwill and St. Vincent DePauls.

She is survived by her four children: Gail (Dan) Russell, of Endeavor, Michael (Kris Colt) Friend, of Portage, Matthew (Louan) Friend, of Endeavor, and Patrick Friend, of Portage; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Alice (Don) McPherson, of Deer Creek, Minn., and Susan (Ray) Hyland of Rock Falls, Ill.; very dear and special friends Mary Jane Volenec, of Portage, and Joyce and Gary Cooper, of Hixton, Wis.; as well as many cousins, nieces nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry in 2007, her mother Geneieve in 2010, and her father in 1958.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family suggests that memorials be made to the family to be distributed to the American Cancer Society, VFW Ladies Auxilary and Hospice.

The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the staffs of Southern Care Hospice and Dr. Gregory and his office for their very dedicated efforts to make Ellie’s passing as peaceful as possible.

Magdelene Mulder

SHELDON — Magdelene Mulder, 96, of Charles City and formerly of Sheldon, passed away on Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City. Her funeral services will be Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 1:30 p.m. at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon with the Rev. David Brower officiating.

Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.

Magdelene Mulder, the daughter of John and Dena (Kastein) Vos, was born Feb. 26, 1914, in Rural Hospers. On Nov. 10, 1933, she was united in marriage to Alden “Ole” Mulder in Luverne, Minn. After their marriage, the couple lived in Sheldon where she operated the Snack Shop, Ole’s Billiards and later the Top Hat with her husband Ole. In August of 1993, the couple moved to Charles City. She passed away after reaching the age of 96 years, 10 months and 14 days.

Magdelene enjoyed fishing, crocheting, baking, camping and playing cards. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sheldon.

She is survived by two daughters, Lois (Wayne) Oordt, of Charles City, and Joyce Bremer, of Katy, Texas; five grandchildren: Lorraine (Doug) Hoeft, Renae (Bob) Virgl, Tahlene (Randy) Davis, Audie (Stephanie) Bremer, Jeanne (Roger) Helderle; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by son-in-law, Paul Bremer, a greatgranddaughter, Darcee Hoeft, parents, three brothers, Pete, John, and Gerald, and two sisters, Eva Kroese, and Gertrude Johnson.

Dorothy E. Meyer

Dorothy E. Meyer, 92, of Charles City, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 16, 2010, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Graveside services for Dorothy Meyer will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

The family will greet friends at the Hauser Funeral Home from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday.

Dorothy Elsie Meyer was born Feb. 5, 1918, in Linn Grove, the daughter of William and Alice (Whitehouse) DeLong. She attended school in Linn Grove. On Sept. 25, 1934, she was united in marriage to Clinton William Meyer at Storm Lake. Her interests included gardening, fishing, crocheting and baking.

Living family members include her three children: Clinton Meyer, of Charles City, Patty (Fred) Miller, of Charles City, and Kay Shepley, of Hawaii; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; eight greatgreat- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a granddaugh-ter, Jodi Shepley; a great grandson, Josh Barnish; a brother, William DeLong; and a sister, Margie Wells.

Helen M. Bullen

IOWA FALLS — Helen M. Bullen, 79, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, surrounded by her family. A celebration of her life was held Saturday, Jan. 22, in Iowa Falls.

Helen was born, July 13, 1931, in Hinsdale, Ill., to M
ark and Gladys Ferguson. She married John Bullen on Dec. 13, 1952.

She is survived by her sons, Mike (Linda) Bullen, of Marshalltown, and Dan (Beth) Bullen, of Itasca, Ill.; her daughters, Amy (Bruce) Campbell, of Norwalk, Janan (Doug) Burns, of Johnston, and Suzanne (Scot) Starbeck, of Cedar Falls; her sister, Lila (Bill) Feltus, of Charles City; her grandchildren: Katherine Bullen, Mark Bullen, Sarah Bullen, Rachel Bullen, A.J. Burns, Alex Burns, Adam Burns, Jenna May Starbeck, Kari Sue Starbeck, Laura Lee Starbeck, Bridget Campbell, Justin Campbell, Nancy (Brent) Baerenwald and Jeff (Mandi) Beeghly; great-grandchildren: Lucas Halverson, Ashlee Halverson and Lindsay Beeghly; along with many nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her father, mother, sister (Jean Meyer) and husband.

Gerald ‘Gary’ Francis Grimmond


MASON CITY — Gerald “Gary” Francis Grimmond, 78, of 304 Third St. N.E., died Thursday Jan. 20, 2011, at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City.

A memorial Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 24, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams, Mason City, with Reverend Michael Schueller officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Calvary Cemetery, Omaha, Neb. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Gerald Francis Grimmond was born Sept. 22, 1932, in Omaha, Neb., the son of Paul James and Alice Evelyn (Roche) Grimmond. After high school Gary continued his education graduating with his bachelor’s degree in journalism from The University of Nebraska. Gary served in the United States Navy from Jan. 22, 1952, until his honorable discharge on Dec. 18, 1954. Gary was united in marriage to Katie Larsen on April 4, 1959, in Omaha, Neb.; to this union four daughters were born. Gary worked for several small newspapers in Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. He joined the
Mason City Globe Gazette in 1968, first as a reporter and later the editor of theRuraLife, retiring after 20 years. Gary purchased the Nashua Reporter in 1988 and owned and operated that newspaper until 1992.

Gary enjoyed bicycling, traveling, books and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Over the years, Gary was involved in the River City Barbershop Chorus, Mason City Community Theater and was a hospital and library volunteer. He will be remembered for having a thirst for knowl
edge.

Gary is survived by his four daughters: Jeanine (Michael) Strong, of Carmel Valley, Calif., Mary Lee (Tom) Kreger, of Brainerd, Minn., Carol (Marty) Ramaekers, of Mason City, and Elizabeth (Carl Allendorf) Grimmond, of Cooper Landing, Ark.; grandchildren: Samantha Freese, of Brainerd, Minn., Steven Fisher, of Phoenix, Ariz., Andrew Ramaekers, of Decorah, Madilyn Ramaekers, of Cedar Falls, and Sam Strong, of Edinburgh, Scotland; one brother, John (Phyllis) Grimmond, and one sister, Kathleen Krejci, all of Omaha, Neb.; seven nieces and nephews; along with numerous great nieces and great nephews.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents Paul and Alice Grimmond.

Thomas Murray

Thomas Murray, 78, of Charles City, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

There will be a gathering of family and friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Thomas LeRoy Murray was born May 7, 1932, at Elma, the son of Harry and Addie (Miller) Murray. He received his education at Elma. Thomas served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On Jan. 15, 1953 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Zobeck at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes. Thomas was employed at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company for 39 years and after retirement also worked with Park and Recreation. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. His interests included bowling, fishing, yard work, coaching baseball and watching NASCAR. Thomas always looked forward to sharing his life with his family, especially his grandchildren. Living family members include his wife, Evelyn Murray, of Charles City; five children: Eugene (Barb) Murray, of Webster City,Marlene (Jerry) Ennen, of Homestead, Geraldine Droste, of Gladston, Ill., Dean (Brenda) Murray, of Charles City, and Jennifer (Kelvin) Marvin, of Charles City; nine grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; a brother, David (Peg) Murray, of Iowa Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

Anthony ‘Tony’ Novak


Anthony “Tony” Novak, 75, of Charles City, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Tony Novak will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Anthony Joseph Novak was born July 5, 1935, in Howard County, the son of Edward and Lillian (Neuzil) Novak. He received his education in Howard County. On Oct. 15, 1956, he was united in marriage to Gladys Zobeck at Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes. Tony was employed for 35 years at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company and for three years at Sherman Nursery. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. His interests included bowling and playing cards and Aggravation. Family was very important to Tony and he took every opportunity to share his life with them.

Living family members include six children, Wesley (Ellen) Novak, of Conrad, Donald (Shelia) Novak, of Spirit Lake, Garry Novak, of Charles City, Danny (Lori) Novak, of Charles City, Kevin (Anna) Novak, of Independence, and Terri Novak, of Charles City; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward (Agnes) Novak, of Elma; and a sister, Mildred (Al) Hrdlicka, of Elma.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, Kenneth “Jo Jo” Novak; and a sister Mary Phillips.

Harriet Holzer

Harriet Holzer, 86, of Charles City, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Harriet Holzer will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Harriet Fae Hundley Holzer was born Dec. 19, 1924 at New Hartford, the daughter of Otto and Cora (Schilling) Hundley. She received her education at Charles City Community School. On Dec. 15, 1944, she was united in marriage to Ray Eikenberry. Ray died on May 3, 1984. Harriet married Gilbert Holzer on Jan. 14, 1985. Gilbert died on Oct. 29, 1994. Over the years she worked in various positions including at Ray’s Pizza and selling Avon products. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, American Legion Auxiliary, and VFW. Auxiliary where she had held various offices including president for two years. Harriet loved cats, the color purple and playing bingo.

Living family members include three children, Betty (Cliff) Abrams, of Mesa, Ariz., Beverly Luttrell, of Rockford, and Bradley (Katherine) Eikenberry, of Mesa, Ariz.; six step-children, Alvin (Kathy) Holzer, of Denton, Tex., Kenny Holzer, Ray (Karen) Holzer and Ron Holzer, all of Charles City, Jean (Dick) Bensend, of Osage, and Judy (Rod) Barker, of Waverly; 32 grandchildren; 51 greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; grandson; great granddaughter; a sister, Alberta Layman; and a daughter-inlaw, Sandy Dolhman.

William ‘Bill’ S. Hart

William “Bill” S. Hart, 81, of Charles City, died Monday morning, Jan. 24, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for William Hart will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

William S. Hart was born March 27, 1929, in Waverly, the son of Albert and Penina (Harvey) Hart. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1948. On May 19, 1947, he was united in marriage to Frieda Bill in Decorah. In 1983, Bill retired from White Farm after 37 years. Along with working at White Farm, Bill did carpentry work around Charles City for many years. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. His interests included fishing with family and friends at Lake of the Woods in Minnesota, home gardening, watching various sports, playing cards, especially 500, and collecting Franklin Mint Cars and Michael Jordan memorabilia. Bill also enjoyed his morning and afternoon McDonald’s coffee group and his dog, Teddy.

Living family members include his wife, Frieda Hart, of Charles City; four children, Michael (Charnel) Hart, of Iowa City; Jim (Ruth) Hart, of Farmington, Minn.; Joe (Shari) Hart, of Charles City; and Teresa (Ed) Hobert, of Charles City; six grandchildren, Jonathan Hart, Michele Hart-Beam, Jennifer Hart, Rob Hart, Tracy Hart and Melissa Jenkins; four great-grandchildren, Abby Hart, Isabella Hart-Beam and Connor and Caitlin Jenkins; and one sister, Dixie (Harry) Fox, of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one granddaughter, Brieha Hart.

OSAGE — Paul R. Nicholson, 89, of Osage, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the First Congregational Church, UCC in Orchard with Pastor Jan Tjaden officiating. Inurnment will be at the Little Cedar Cemetery in Little Cedar with military honors at the grave by Orchard American Legion Post 641.

LaVern Schwickerath

LaVern Schwickerath, 73, of Charles City, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at his home.

A funeral Mass for LaVern Schwickerath will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. followed by the Rosary lead by the Knights of Columbus.

LaVern Leo Schwickerath was born Sept. 14, 1937, in Chickasaw County, the son of Victor and Rose (Gebel) Schwickerath. He graduated from St. William of Alta Vista. LaVern served in the United States Army from 1955-58. On Sept. 21, 1957, he was united in marriage to Marlene Elliott at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma. LaVern was a foreman in the chemical plant at Salsbury/Solvay/Cambrex for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and VFW. LaVern’s interests included playing cards, going on casino bus trips and being a snowbird to Apache Junction, Ariz. Family was always important to LaVern and he took every opportunity to share his life with them.

Living family members include his wife, Marlene Schwickerath, of Charles City; three children: Kathleen Waite, of Cedar Rapids, Al Schwickerath, of Charles City, and Anthony (Jen) Schwickerath, of Cedar Falls; two grandchildren, Ashley and Echo; a brother, Clair (Tina) Schwickerath, of Maryland; four sisters: Ellen Wiest, of Ft. Atkinson, Arlene (Mike) Heying, of Alta Vista, Mildred Webber, of Independence, and Doris (Sylvester) Mrachek, of Schley; and his special dog, Daisey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Earl Schwickerath.

Robert L. DeVries

FLOYD — Robert L. DeVries, 73, of Floyd died on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

According to Bob’s wishes he was cremated and there will be a private burial at a later date.

Robert L. DeVries
Robert L. DeVries, 73, of Floyd, died on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville, with Pastor Michael Parris officiating.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

According to Bob’s wishes he was cremated and there will be a private burial at a later date.

Robert Lee DeVries was born on March 7, 1937 to John and Helen (Hector) DeVries in Elma. Bob attended school in Elma, graduating from Elma High School in 1956. He joined the Iowa National Guard serving for 13 years. Bob was united in marriage to Shirley Kruger on Oct. 18, 1958, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville. The couple made their home in and around Floyd. Bob was a machinist for White Farm Corporation in Charles City for 25 years. Later he worked as a RV technician for Bo-De Enterprises in Austin, Minn., for 18 years before his retirement. Bob loved to restore antique cars, fish, play cards and most of all loved his family and friends and his dog Buddy. Bob was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville.

Bob is survived by his wife Shirley, of Floyd; two sons, Marty DeVries, of Osage, and Jeff (Diane) DeVries, of Charles City; a brother, Floyd (Maxine) DeVries, of Austin, Minn.; a sister, Jeanett Schroeder, of Alta Vista; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen; brothers Jake, Hommo, Harm and Ben DeVries; sisters Rebbecca Gerdis, Frieda Whorple and Elsina Ritzman; and brother-in-law Dale Schroeder.

McCAMMON, Idaho — Virginia Ruth “Jenny” Peterson, 61, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, with her husband by her side. Jenny was born June 29, 1949, in Springfield, Greene County, Mo., to Albert Emito and Ruth E. (Smith) Vegas. She married Stephen Alan Peterson on July 27, 1990, in Charleston, S.C.

Jenny is survived and will be dearly missed by her husband, Steve Peterson, of McCammon, Idaho; and daughters Lori Holtz and Annette Holtz, both of Charles City, and Angela Kramer, of Mason City. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorla; and brothers, Kevin, Eddie and Albert.

Jenny was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Vegas and Ruth Nease, and a brother, Anthony.

John C. Fisher
John C. Fisher, 68, of Promise City, and formerly of Nashua, died Friday Jan. 28, 2011, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.

Tuesday, Feb, 1, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua with Pastor Okitakoyi Lundula officiating. Musical selections will include “In the Garden,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Whispering Hope.”

Full military honors will be conducted by the Nashua VFW Post No. 6792.

Friends may greet the family 4–7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

John Cecil Fisher was born May 17, 1942, in Charles City, the son of Cecil W. and Esther F. (Conner) Fisher. He graduated from Nashua High School in 1960. On May 31, 1960, he enlisted in the U,S. Marine Corps. On Nov. 26, 1963, John was discharged as a Lance Corporal.

On April 24, 1965, John was united in marriage to Evelyn Steinberg at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charles City. To this union, two sons were born. He worked most of his life at Salsbury Chemicals in Charles City, retiring in 2004. John was a life member of the North American Hunting Club, and was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was an active member of the Seymour United Methodist Church, and served on the SPRC until the time of his death.

John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Evelyn; two sons, Jon (Amy) Fisher and Randall (Shawn) Fisher, both of Nashua; a brother Richard (Doris) Fisher, of Harris, Mo.; three sisters, Elna Korinke, of Winter, Wis., Sharon (Bruce) McDonald, of Del City, Okla., Shirley (James) Soldwisch, of Waverly; and seven grandchildren, Shalyn, Coral, Sierra, Cody, Liberty, Clay, and Cooper Fisher, all of Nashua. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Josephine Jensen.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, at 3 p.m. in the Promise City Community Center. Pastor Linda Reida will be officiating from the United Methodist Church in Seymour.
