John L. Luttrell

MASON CITY - John L. Luttrell, 59, of 780 S. Pierce Ave., Apt. #113 in Mason City, formerly of Charles City died Tuesday morning, February 28, 2006, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City with family at his side.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 3, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., in Charles City, with Pastor Thomas W. Healey officiating. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. The family will greet relatives and friends one hour prior to John’s service at the funeral home on Friday.John Leroy Luttrell was born May 19, 1946, to Archie and Mary (Smith) Luttrell in rural Nora Springs. He grew up in Manly and attended the North Central High School.

On March 7, 1992, John was united in marriage to Beverly ‘Bev’ (Eikenberry) Mahnesmith at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City. John had lived most of his adult life in Floyd County. John was employed as a stable manager for the Diamond B. Stables in recent years. John lived life to the fullest, he had a great passion for National Hot Rod Association, a love for eagles and was a Harley Davidson enthusiast.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in John’s life are his wife, Beverly ‘Bev’ Luttrell of Mason City; three children, Juneal (Alan) Stuva of Waverly, Josh Montavlo of Georgia and Sarah Nicole Luttrell of Nevada; John’s bonus family, Loren (Barb) Mahnesmith of Nora Springs, Lynette (DuWayne) Paulsen of Rockford, Randy Mahnesmith, Rob Mahnesmith and Rick Mahnesmith, all of Mason City; four special grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 17 bonus grandchildren; two sisters, Judy Jutting and Margaret ‘Peg’ Luttrell, both of Mason City; mother-in-law, Harriet Holzer; two sisters-in-law, Anna Bichelmeyer and Betty (Cliff) Abrams; brother-in-law, Brad (Kathy) Eikenberry; special family, Jane Herman and her children; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.

Preceding John in death are his parents; and two brothers, Bob and Tom Luttrell.

Juanita Hollar

PATON - Funeral services for Juanita Hollar, 90, will be 10 a.m. Friday March 3, 2006, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson, with interment at Richland Twp. Cemetery in Guthrie County. Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson after 9 a.m. Thursday. The family will greet friends at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home between 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Survivors include five children: Arrena Martinson and her husband Wayne of Lakewood, Calif.; Bill Hollar and his wife Arlene of Charles City; F. Dale Hollar and his wife Sue of Peru; Karen Wenger and her husband Doug of Paton, and Mary Hartmann and her husband Dick of Tiskilwa, Ill. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren; 11 great great-grandchildren; one brother, Fred Brody and his wife Norma of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters-in-law: Rosie Hollar of Jefferson, and Wilma Scheuermann of Parkers Prairie, Minn.

Dr. William H. Olson

TOPEKA, Kan. - Dr. William Howard Olson, 75, of Topeka , Kan. passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at Topeka Community Health Care Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m. Monday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Cremation will follow the service. Inurnment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City. Dr. Olson will lie in state after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where a Vigil Prayer Service will be held at 6 p.m. and a Glory to God Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m.He was born March 5, 1930, in Gilmore City, the son of Earl and Aldean Jacobson Olson. Dr. Olson graduated from Bode High School in Bode, Iowa, in 1947 and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University. He moved from Boston to Topeka in 1987.

Dr. Olson was employed the USDA before he retired. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and the Glory to God Community.

He was married to Lenore Laughlin Estal on February 20, 1981, in Charles City. She survives. Dr. Olson was preceded in death by his first wife, Idellys and a daughter Laurie.

Survivors, beside his wife, include: one son, Philip Olson of Iowa City, three daughters, Vivien Halloran of Muscatine, Martha Hackbart of Golden, Colo., Sarah Gelner of Story City; two stepsons, Jeff Estal in Tennessee and Jerry Estal in Colorado; one brother, Dr. Robert Olson of Bemidji, Minn., one sister, Janice Parker of Bode; 19 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Margaret Carroll

Margaret Carroll, 88, of Charles City, died Thursday, March 2, 2006, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Memorial services for Margaret "Margie" Carroll will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at the First Congregational Church. Pastor Phil Corr will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in Union Cemetery at Iowa Falls.Margaret L. Thurston Carroll was born June 2, 1917, in Forest City, the daughter of Abe and Josie (Stout) Thurston. She graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1935, Iowa State Teachers College in 1939 and also took merchandising classes at New York University. On April 21, 1942, she was united in marriage to Phillip Carroll at Cedar Falls. During Margie's working career, she taught home economics in Fredericksburg and Des Moines, was a fabric analyzer for Burlington Mills in New York, home demonstration agent for Worth and Cerro Gordo counties, Cashman's gift buyer from 1952 to 1967 and an English teacher with Charles City schools from 1967 to 1982.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church, PEO CY Chapter, American Association of University Women, charter member of the Charles City Art Association, City Improvement Association, National 19th Amendment Board and the North Iowa Weavers and Spinners Guild. One of Margie's favorite pastimes was weaving on a large loom.

Margie leaves a host of friends who will always cherish her memory.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband who died on April 21, 1998.

In lieu of flowers Margie requested that memorials be directed to the Phil and Margaret Carroll Scholarship Fund, 500 N. Daniel B. Merfeld

STERLING, Ill. - Daniel B. Merfeld, 54, died Thursday, March 2, 2006, at his home in Sterling, Ill., after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Daniel B. Merfeld was born May 14, 1951 in Charles City, the son of Bernard and Frances Kelly Merfeld. He married Janan Galloway in Roseville, Iowa, on September 15, 1973. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling. Mr. Merfeld also was a member of the Iowa National Guard serving as a medic.He is survived by his wife, Janan of Sterling; two daughters, Stephanie (Aaron) Anderson of Sterling and Stacy (Mario) Dillard of Morrison; three sisters, Kathy Troy of Rochester Minn., Jean Merfeld of Waterloo, Iowa, and Pat Weiss of Manchester Iowa; one brother, Pete Merfeld of Mason City; three grandchildren, Tyree Dillard, Gage Anderson and Madison Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of the Resurrection of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 6, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling, with Reverend Paul White officiating. Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. Monday at the church, and Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at Schilling Funeral Home, 702 First Ave, Sterling. A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marilyn Hall

Marilyn Hall, 64, of Charles City, formerly of Floyd, died Saturday, March 4, 2006, at her daughter's home in Osage.

Funeral services for Marilyn Hall will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Paul Wilcox will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Marilyn Joyce Cummings Hall was born December 20, 1941, at Charles City, the daughter of Lester and Wanda (Kemp) Cummings. She received her education from the Charles City Community Schools. On March 5, 1958, she was united in marriage to William Hall at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Since "Bill" was career Air Force, they lived in numerous locations, retiring to the Charles City area in 1976. His death occurred on November 23, 1996. Marilyn was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. She enjoyed the activities of outdoor living, such as working in the yardwork, camping and gardening with roses, especially yellow roses, being her speciality. Traveling was also important to her. Her greatest passion, however, was gambling, which she took every opportunity to participate in.

Living family members include three children, Rick (Jayne) Hall of Waverly, Rod (Shari) Hall of Albert Lee, and Renee (Patrick) Burdett of Osage; six grandchildren, Desiree Hall, Vanessa Hall, Jennifer Hall, Dustin Hall, Angela Enderson, Brian Warner, Joshua Horvath and Sara Horvath; four great-grandchildren; her mother, Wanda Cummings of Charles City; and a sister, Carol Boggess of Floyd. She was preceded in death by her father; and a brother, Ron Cummings.

Adelaide M. Heamann

Adelaide M. ‘Addie’ Heamann, 85, formerly of 205 Fourth Ave, in Charles City and a resident of the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home died Friday morning, March 3, 2006, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City with family at her side.

Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 6, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane in Charles City with the Msgr. Stanley J. Hayek presiding. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.The family will greet relatives and friends from 4-7 p.m. on Friday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. A rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and the scripture wake service will follow at 7 p.m. The visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Adelaide Marie Heamann was born September 26, 1920, in Staceyville, the daughter of Leo and Christina (Meyer) Heamann. Adelaide attended school in Staceyville and graduated from the Staceyville High School. ‘Addie,’ as she was affectionately known by family and friends, worked for Peerless and the Smith Lumber Co. She furthered her education having attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City, where she earned her secretarial degree. Throughout her life, Adelaide was employed at the Charles City Area Chamber of Commerce as a secretary for 25 years, retiring in 1982. She was very active with the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the St. Jude’s church circle and the rosary society. Adelaide was active in life. Her interest and leisure activities included various card clubs, caring for her cats, being a competitive bridge player and an avid reader, especially mystery books. Adelaide will be best remembered as being very gracious and sophisticated. She was a very particular person with a great sense for being a classy dresser. She was frugal by nature, however, when she did make a purchase it was one of great quality. When Adelaide was younger, she traveled quite extensively. She treasured time spent with friends and family dining out for Thursday lunches and invariably always ordering a hamburger.

Her family and friends will dearly miss Adelaide. Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her sister, Mary Combs of St. Paul, Minn.; cousins dear to her, Betty A. Larson and Dolores C. Anderson, both of Charles City; in addition to other cousins, relatives and friends who survive her.

Adelaide is preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; aunts and uncles.

William R. Borchard Sr.

Robert Oleson

Robert "Bob" Oleson, 87, of Charles City, died Thursday, March 2, 2006, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services for Bob Oleson will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Gayle Wilcox will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit. Oleson was born September 4, 1918, in Bremer County, the son of August and Lena (Huber) Oleson. He received his education from Nashua public school. Bob proudly served in the United States Navy during WW II, achieving the rate of Machinist's Mate First Class. On June 19, 1943, he was united in marriage to Velma Beck at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Bob worked many years at the Oliver/White Farm Corporation. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His interests included fishing and playing cards. Bob played the banjo in the Oleson Family Band, which entertained at many local nursing homes for 27 years. He will always be remembered for his creative storytelling.

Living family members include two children, Sandra (Lowell) Head of Alta Vista, and Don (Doreen) Oleson of Altadena, Calif.; six grandchildren, Teresa (Joe) Hickey, Myron (Shaonda) Head, Daron Head, Stacey Oleson, David (Melissa) Oleson and Robert Cobb; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Albert (Ann) Oleson of Evansdale; five sisters, Marie Fritcher of Plainfield, Grace Woodman of Shell Rock, Gertrude Nelson of Phoenix, Ariz., Ardith (Paul) Goings of Nashua and Janet (Dwight) Barnhart of Greene.

Richard Scott “Richie” Roeder, 35, died Thursday, March 2, 2006 at his residence in Charles City.

Funeral services for Richard, of 223 1/2 N. Main St., Charles City, formerly of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene with Pastor Tim Platt of the Clarion Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral chapel.

Beverly A. Massee

NASHUA — Beverly A. Massee, 77, of Charles City, formerly of Nashua, died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Beverly Massee will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the 1st Congregational Church of Nashua. Rev. Robert Triechel and Rev. Phil Corr will co-officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua. Friends may call at the Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua from 4-8 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will continue Friday at the church an hour prior to the service.

 

Beverly Arlene Massee was born on June 25, 1928, at Nashua, the daughter of Victor and Bernice (French) Jones. Her early childhood years were spent in the Nashua area. In ninth grade, she and her family moved to Everett, Wash., where her parents worked in the shipyards during WW II. After returning to Nashua, Bev completed her education at Nashua High School graduating in 1946. On June 25, 1947, she married Robert Massee at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union were born two children, Barbara and Charles. Bob and Bev were divorced in 1978. Bev was part of the family farm operation until 1960 when she began working for Drs. VonBerg and Yeager in their dentistry practice. She worked as a dental assistant for 36 years.

After retiring, Bev and her friend, Rod Kramer, operated a mini-donut trailer, traveling to many area events and celebrations. Bev and Rod spent the winter months in Florida, close to her son, Chuck.

Living family members include two children, Barb (Alan) Kruthoff of Lake View, and Chuck of DeLeon, Fla.; two grandchildren, Shelly (Jade) Pospeshil of Johnston and Nick Berry of Ames; one great-grandson, Mason Pospeshil; two sisters, Marilyn Mead of Charles City, and Donna Paine of Colorado; several nieces and nephews; and her special friend Rod Kramer. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Doris McGinn.

Bobby Carmody

Bobby Carmody, 71, of Charles City, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass for Bobby Carmody will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, where there will also be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the service.

Bobby Marvin Carmody was born January 1, 1935, in Cerro Gordo County, the son of John and Josephine (Rogers) Carmody. He received his education from Mason City Public School. Bobby proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. On July 20, 1956, he was married to Alberta Johnson in Chicago. They later divorced. He worked for many years as a metal slitter in Chicago and then moved to Osage where he was part owner of Firestone Tire. He was a member of the Chicago Lions Club and the local V.F.W. Bobby looked forward to fishing, playing cribbage and being a pit man for stock car racing. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Living family members include five children: Bob (Deb) Carmody of Britt, Kathleen (Rick) Wilkins of Charles City, Theresa (Larry) Grein of Osage, Daniel (Margaret) Carmody of Charles City and Debra (Edward) Shindelar of Little Cedar; 12 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Roger (Mabel) Carmody of Arkansas; and a sister, Rosella Mayo of Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jeffrey Obermeier; three brothers, Buster, Bud, and Lloyd Carmody; and four sisters, Zola and Kay Mahn, Stella Buchanan and Thelma McCourt.

Dr. William Howard Olson, 75, of Topeka went home to be with Jesus Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at Topeka Community Health Care Center.

A Glory to God prayer service and Rosary was held at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home and Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Dr. Olson will be laid to rest in Charles City.

Dr. Olson was born March 5, 1930, in Gilmore City, the son of Earl and Aldean Jacobson Olson. He graduated from Bode High School in Bode, in 1947 and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1952. Dr. Olson was a private veterinary practitioner in Charles City, before working for the USDA. He moved to Topeka in 1987. Dr. Olson was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and the Glory to God Community. He was married to Gloria Idellys Wierson Olson on April 1, 1950. She preceded him in death, along with a daughter, Laurie. He was then married to Lenore Laughlin Estal on February 20, 1981, in Charles City.

Survivors include his wife, Lenore; one son, Philip Olson (Rocksann) of Iowa City; three daughters, Vivien Halloran (Tim) of Muscatine, Martha Hackbart (Terry) of Golden, Colo., Sarah Gelner (Alan) of Story City; two stepsons, Jeff Estal (Melanie) of Tenn., and Jerry Estal (Ann) in Colorado; one brother, Dr. Robert Olson (Marge) of Bemidji, Minn.; a sister, Janice Parker (Ron) of Bode; 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

John Chambers

John Chambers, 90, of Marble Rock, died Thursday, March 9, 2006, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs surrounded by his loved ones.

Funeral services for John Chambers will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. John Earl Chambers was born October 11, 1915, in Floyd County, the son of C. ‘Glenn’ and Nellie (Hildebrand) Chambers. He received his education at the Cedar Township country school. On March 30, 1941, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Sheets at the Little Brown Church. John farmed all of his life in Floyd County. Farming and raising feeder cattle was his passion. He was a member of the Marble Rock United Methodist Church. John always took a special interest in his family, community affairs and neighborhood activities. He will be remembered as one who always supported his community and neighbors whenever the need arose.

Living family members include three children: John Leslie (Paula) Chambers of Waterloo, Beverly (Terry) Mathers of Rudd, and Lyle (Ann) Chambers of Marble Rock; 12 grandchildren: Tammra Chambers, Tresa (John) Habinck, Melissa (Cory) Haberstich, Jolene (Tim) Rogers, Julie (Joe) Eggena, John (Kim) Field, Jerome Field, Laura (Jason) Boyd, and Katie (Zach) Kaduce, John Allen, Caleb and Chelsea Chambers; 17 great-grandchildren: Grace Chambers, Jordan and Haley Habinck, Addyson and Macy Haberstich, Erin, Matthew and Allison Rogers, John J., Emily and Sarah Eggena, Brandon, Hannah and Courtney Field, David, Lydia and Rebecca Boyd; two great great-granddaughters: Madison Field and Naomi Jones; three brothers: Wesley Chambers of Charles City and James Lewis (Margaret) and Clayton (Rosemary) Chambers, both of Marble Rock; three sisters: Edith Bill of Greene, Dorothy Bill of Riceville and Marion Meek of Lakeville, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife on November 15, 2004; a son, Allen Chambers, in 1965; a great-grandson, Dean Boyd, in 1996; a brother, Roy Chambers; and a sister, Edna Ferch.

Clarence Becker

Clarence Becker, 84, of Clear Lake, formerly of Mason City and Charles City, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Clarence Becker will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor David Werges will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Clarence Willard Ted Becker was born January 23, 1922, at Charles City, the son of Walter and Meta (Rieken) Becker. He received his education from Floyd County country schools. Clarence married Eileen Grap, who died on July 21, 1975, and Delores Feidler, who died on January 16, 1983. He then married Mary Mejia and they later divorced. Clarence farmed all of his life in the Charles City area. After retiring, he worked in maintenance at the YMCA. He was a member of Cross Lutheran Church until he transferred his membership to Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Other memberships included the Moose and Farm Bureau. He also served as a 4-H leader for several years. Clarence enjoyed the outdoors, including fishing and hunting, and also looked forward to dancing.

Living family members include three sons: Duane (Rose) Becker of Casselberry, Fla., Donald (Toni) Becker of Park Rapids, Minn., and Darwin (Becky) Becker of Charles City; eight grandchildren; a step grandson; three great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; a brother, Albert ‘Shorty’ (Catherine) Becker of Gardner, N.Y.; two sisters, Elsie Hoeft and Irene Rosenberg both of Charles City; and a special friend, Leanne Castillo of Britt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; a brother, Harry Becker; and a sister, Esther Becker.

Bernice M. Emmel

Bernice M. Emmel, 89, of 600 Freeman St. in Charles City died Wednesday evening, March 8, 2006, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Bernice Mary Emmel was born January 2, 1917, to Lawrence and Elva (Barker) Bauer in Cresco. She attended and graduated school in Charles City.

Bernice was united in marriage to John H. Emmel on March 23, 1937. Bernice had been a homemaker throughout the years. She had lived in Charles City for 87 years. Bernice was devoted to her faith and very active in the First Christian Church in Charles City. She was a member of church, a pianist for the church, a Deaconess and Elder, she sang in the church choir, was a Sunday school teacher and involved with the building committee, all with the First Christian Church in Charles City.

Other organizations that Bernice was involved in throughout her life included, the Central Star Club, the ’34 Gals and participating as 4-H club leader.

Survivors include, her husband, John H. Emmel of Charles City; three daughters: Marjorie (Joe) Cromey of Albuquerque, N.M., Darlene (Dean) Vincent of West Chester, Ohio, and Joyce (Richard) Knight of Floyd; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Elva Bauer; an infant grandson and her brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Jean Bauer.

Diane Tynan, 51, of Rockford, formerly of Charles City, died Thursday, March 9, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Diane Marie McDonald Tynan was born November 25, 1954, at New Hampton, the daughter of James and Darlene (Johnson) McDonald, Jr. She graduated from Marion High School in 1973. On December 15, 1973, she was united in marriage to Richard Tynan, Sr. at Cedar Rapids. During her career she worked with Kid's Castle and also was the proprietor of the Rockford Diner. She was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church and Women of the Moose. Diane enjoyed cooking and will be remembered for her potato salad. She also collected spoons and teddy bears. The grandchildren always held a very special place in her heart and she always looked forward to attending their activities.

Living family members include her husband, Richard Tynan, Sr. of Rockford; two children, Richard (Tonia) Tynan, Jr. of Rockford and Racheal Tynan (Jeremiah G. Ferch) of Charles City; seven grandchildren, Mercedes and Lexus Tynan, Cole, Chelsea, Justice. J.J., and Jesup Ferch; two brothers, Terry (Rhonda) McDonald of Cedar Rapids and Dennis (Mary) McDonald of Marengo; a sister, Tamie McDonald of Atkins, Texas; a special aunt and uncle, Ronald and Anna Hurd of Nashua; special friends, Lynette and DuWayne Paulsen of Rockford; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Marie Murphy, the daughter of Henry H. and Alvina (Lippmann) Suhr, was born July 7, 1915, in Lowden; however, Ruth claimed that she considered her hometown to be Westgate. She attended and graduated from Maynard High School.

Following high school, Ruth received her cosmetology license at a beauty school in Des Moines. Throughout the following years, she was employed at or owned beauty shops in Sumner, Boone and Charles City.

While living in Boone, Ruth met her future husband, Charles "Mickey" Murphy and the couple was united in marriage on April 17, 1948 at the Lutheran Church in Boone. They moved to Charles City in 1950. Ruth and Mick became the proud parents of a daughter Sandra and a son Wayne. Following their retirements, they treasured their time together traveling to and spending the winter months in Arizona for several years.

Some of Ruth’s leisure activities and interests included playing cards, especially Euchre, Bridge and Skipbo, golfing, going for Sunday afternoon drives with Mick and the kids, listening to big band music and dining out. She looked forward to the annual Christmas cookie exchange with her friends, window shopping and family gatherings. Her children claim that Ruth was always interested in the latest happenings of her children and grandchildren.

Ruth was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, as well as the Women’s Circle in the church and a Floyd County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary volunteer.

Ruth will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Meyers and Robert Picken of Floyd; her son, Wayne and Donna Granneman of Davenport; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David "Andy" and Charlene Murphy of Missouri Valley and her six grandchildren, Stephen (Diane) Picken, Lori (Bill) Roach, Deborah (Ed) Gasiorek, Michelle (Steve) Evans, Cynthia (Scott) Smith and Jeff (Rochelle) Meyers. Ruth will also be missed by her 12 great-grandchildren and other numerous relatives and friends.

Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Mickey" Murphy in September of 2003; her parents, Henry and Alvina Suhr and her granddaughter, Diana Ahrenholz.

Helen Latch

Helen Latch, 83, of Charles City, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Helen Latch will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Rev. Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. on Friday where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Helen Ruth Boller Latch was born June 26, 1922, in Goodell, the daughter of Harvey and Edith (Forristall) Boller. She graduated from the Goodell High School. On July 3, 1940, she was united in marriage to Elroy Latch. In 1941, they moved south of Charles City where they were engaged in farming. Elroy died on March 27, 1967. Helen was then employed for 18 years at Spurgen’s Department Store. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church; Rosary Society; Pony of America Club, where she served as the national secretary; and the Chat-A-Bit Club. One of Helen's greatest interests was bowling. She was on a bowling league in Greene and was also active at the Comet Bowl in Charles City. Helen also enjoyed attending the Comets softball games and going to horse shows. Her family was always very important to her and she took every opportunity to be with them and attend their various activities, such as her grandson's wrestling matches.

Living family members include two children, Wayne (Judy) Latch of Charles City and Sandra (Rick) Martin of Earlharm; six grandchildren, Christine (John) Beranek, Tracey (Eric) Smith, Nicole (Jon) Ingraham, Natalie (Valdinir) Rak, Chad (Sara) Latch and Jason Latch; six great-grandchildren, Lina, Leah, Lindsey, Logan, Luka and Taylor; two brothers, Larry (Evelyn) Boller of Godell, and Jerry (Tony) Boller of San Luis Obispo, Calif; and three sisters, Cleola (Marvin) Lackore of Garner, Harriet Rust of Mason City and Beth (Dale) Lackore of San Luix Obispo, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Howard and Darwin Boller; and sister Eulia Christie.

Leona Nelson, 84, 811 Clinton Street, Charles City, died March 14, 2006, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Leona Tomena (Vaala) Nelson was born June 10, 1921, at the family farm in rural Saude, the fifth child of John and Anna (Otteson) Vaala. She was baptized on July 3, 1921, and affirmed her faith on May 12, 1935, at the Saude Lutheran Church. On Jan. 1, 1943, she was united in marriage to Stanley E. Nelson at the Saude Lutheran Church parsonage. They farmed in Howard County after their marriage and later moved to Charles City, where she worked at Morey’s Grocery, Peterson Cleaners and the Charles City Locker. She found it very relaxing to tend to their large garden and raspberry bushes. It gave her great joy to share the bounties of their garden. Leona enjoyed canning as much as possible. Bread-and-butter pickles, tomatoes and tomato juice were a priority as she shared them with many family members. Her kitchen was a special place for her, baking pies and trying new recipes. Christmas time meant the traditional lefse and peanut butter balls. It was so obvious to everyone who knew her, her family was very important to her. Leona's other interests included dancing, fishing, reading, listening to waltzes and spending time with friends.

Those thankful for sharing her life are her daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Linus Schrage; a daughter-in-law, Suzi Zirbel and her husband, Jim; seven grandchildren, Kim (Dean) Marzen, Kelly (Paul) Baron, Kathy (Glenn) Sansburn, Konnie (Rick) Stewart, Jason Nelson, Lisa (Khan) Kammerer and Joshua Nelson; nine great -grandchildren, Jesse Marzen and his fianc/, Kari Kielman, Anna and Isaac Baron, Ryan and Jason Sansburn, Kaylyn and Brooke Stewart, Lauren and Jack Kammerer; a great-great-grandson, Tyler Allen; a sister-in-law, Gladys Iverson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley on June 6, 1990; a son, Jack Nelson on Dec. 28, 1992; three sisters, Cora Knutson, Viola Robinson and Amy Munson; and a brother, Joseph "Bud" Vaala.

Kathy D. Johnson

RICEVILLE — Kathy D. Johnson, 54, of Riceville, died on Thursday, March 16, 2006, at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (March 20) at the LeRoy Evangelical Lutheran Church in LeRoy, Minn., with Reverend Thomas Kolden officiating. Burial will be at the Hillsdale Cemetery in Marble Rock.

 

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Kathlene Dora Seeley was born on Aug. 12, 1951, in Danville, Ill., to Merle and Delores (Kuykendall) Seeley. She graduated high school from Charles City. On Feb. 14, 1970, Kathy married David Johnson at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Marble Rock. To this union, two sons were born, Russell and Michael.

Kathy enjoyed traveling, shopping and camping. Each year, she looked forward to the July 4th camping trip at Lake Hendricks with her family and she recently went on a cruise to the Dominican Republic. In the previous years, she went to Hawaii and to Cancun. She liked crosses, angels, cats, roses, teddy bears, quilting and cross stitch. Kathy was a member of the LeRoy Evangelical Lutheran Church and was very involved in the church. She loved jewelry, especially pearls, and she had a collection of spoons.

Kathy loved making her family happy, and she really loved her children.

She is survived by her husband, David Johnson of Riceville; sons Russell (Vanessa) Johnson of Riceville, and Michael Johnson, who resides at home; her mother Delores (stepfather Dennis) Petersen of Mason City; three sisters-in-law: Gerogene (Jim) Johnson of Allison, Cathy Kruse (Gary Schmidt) of Marble Rock, and Janice Johnson of Sioux City; nephews and nieces: Mathew, Melissa and Marc Johnson, Andrew (Samantha) Kruse, Gary Schmidt, Jr., Rebecca Johnson, Bradley Johnson, Brandon Johnson and a grand niece, Ashley.

She was preceded in death by her father, Merle Seeley; father-in-law, Andie Johnson; mother-in-law, Marvel Johnson; five brothers-in-law: Randie Johnson, Dennis Johnson, Eugene Johnson, Terry Johnson and John Kruse.

Agnes T. Mashek

NEW HAMPTON — Agnes T. Mashek, 71, of New Hampton, died Friday, March 17, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center.

A Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 22 at Holy Family Parish, St. Mary’s Center in New Hampton.

Internment will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in New Hampton.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 pm Tuesday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. scripture service. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services at the church.

Agnes T. Mashek was born November 1, 1934, at New Hampton, the daughter of Theodore M. & Euphemia M. (Krogman) Zimmer. She attended country school near her family’s home and went on to graduate from the New Hampton High School in 1952. After graduation, Agnes worked for a short time in the Chickasaw County Treasurer’s Office and St. Joseph’s Hospital. On October 22, 1955, she was united in marriage to A.J. Mashek at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Following their marriage the couple resided on the Zimmer family homestead, where the couple farmed side by side until retiring and moving to New Hampton in 1983. During their retirement years the couple wintered at Paradise Acres in Alamo, Texas, where they served on many committees. After A.J.’s death in 2001, Agnes spent one more winter in Texas. She has been a resident of the New Hampton Care Center for the past two years due to the progression of Parkinson’s.

Agnes enjoyed fishing and camping with grandchildren and friends, overseas travel, baking cookies, cooking, playing cards and meeting with the Buzzin’ Dozen and Live & Learn Clubs.

She was a member of the Holy Family Parish in New Hampton.

Agnes is survived by her son Steve (Karen) Mashek of New Hampton, daughter Mary (Larry) Schubert of Rockford, six grandchildren Charles (Kimberly) Mashek of Waverly, Michael (Stephanie) Mashek of New Hampton, William Mashek of New Hampton, Michelle Schubert of Rockford, Jarred Schubert of Rockford, and Nicole Schubert of Rockford, and a brother John (Marlys) Zimmer of Fredericksburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband A.J. on October 22, 2001.

MARBLE ROCK — Estella Schmitt, 96, of Marble Rock, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at St. Lukes Living Center East in Cedar Rapids.

A funeral Mass for Estella Schmitt will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at St. Mary's Parish Hall, Roseville, from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday where the Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. followed by the recitation of the Rosary. Visitation will continue Saturday an hour prior to the service.

Mardelle (Reit) Kellar, 57, of Lake City, Minn., died Saturday March 25, 2006, at home.

A visitation will be held Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel, Lake City. There will be another visitation held Wednesday night from 5-8 p.m. at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, Charles City. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church, Charles City, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dennis Neizwaag officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church.

Mardelle was born Sept. 5, 1948, in Santa Monica, Calif., to James and Ruth (Wallbaum) Mars. She grew up in Rockford. Mardelle graduated from Rockford High School in 1966. She then moved to Charles City and worked at Band Box Cleaners/Cintas for 20 years. She married James Kellar on Dec. 21, 1998, in Charles City. In 2003, they moved to Lake City. Mardelle enjoyed crafting, cleaning, sewing, riding motorcycle, boating and fishing.

She is survived by two daughters: Allison (Dale) Schmitt of Charles City, Heather (Tracy) Winters of Rockford; five sons, Charles (Dana) Breitkreutz of Jacksboro, Texas, James (Jean) Breitkreutz of Colwell, Steven (Dee) Breitkreutz, Charles City, George (Kimberly) Usher of Charles City and Michael (Eva) Kellar of Nevada; 18 grandchildren; one great=-granddaughter; one brother, Byron (Debra Janezeck) Mars of Virginia Beach,Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Las Vegas — William C. Anderson, 75, formerly of Clear Lake, died on Tuesday March 21, 2006, at the Summerlin Medical Center in Las Vegas.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 27, at the Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with Reverend Derik Yarian officiating from the Zion Lutheran Church. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, with full military honors conducted by members of the Clear Lake V.F.W.

William C. Anderson was born Feb. 9, 1931, in Clear Lake the son of Raymond and Mattie (Young) Anderson. He attended schools in Clear Lake and Ionia. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged. He worked at S.C. Johnson Company of Racine, Wis., up until his retirement. He became a resident of Las Vegas in 1991.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Anderson of Las Vegas; son, Chris Anderson of Decatur, Ill.; two brothers, Mike and his wife Louise Anderson of Jacksonville, Fla., and Roger Anderson of Lawler; along with numerous nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mattie Anderson; his sister and brother-in-law, Colleen and Ray Koebrick, and his first wife Grace (Jan. 2, 1972).

VENTURA, Calif. — Clifford Frederick Hildebrand, recently of Ventura, Calif., formerly of Charles City, passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 9, 2006, in Ventura.

A memorial service was held March 2, at St. Matthews Methodist Church in Hacienda Heights, Calif., with Rev. Judith Fox in charge.

Cliff was born July 31, 1922 in Greene. His mother was Mary Bielefeld, his father was Elbert Hildebrand, both of Greene. His mother passed away when Cliff was 5 years old, so he, with his two brothers Bob and Merlyn, spent his early years in the Lutheran orphanage in Waverly.

Cliff graduated from the Charles City Junior-Senior High School in 1940. He accepted a job at Northern Pump in Minneapolis, and joined the Merchant Marines during WWII.

He married Shirley McCauley in 1943, and they had nine children. They had residences in Minnesota and Iowa, where Cliff, at one time, was owner and proprietor of Bell Fiberglass Factory, where he invented and produced many items in the fiberglass industry.

In 1990, Cliff married Jean H. James, a former Charles Citian, and they lived in Hacienda Heights, Calif., for 15 years. He attended St. John Vianney Church in Hacienda Heights, Calif., and also St. Matthews Methodist Church. Cliff has a ready-made smile and many friends there. His wife, Jean survives him.

Also surviving is the mother of his children, Shirley Hildebrand of Minneapolis; his five sons: Dennis of Superior, Mont., John (Judy) of Janesville, Thomas of El Cajon, Calif., Gregory (Kerrie) of Middletown, Conn. and James (Pam) of Mantorville, Minn.; four daughters: Dianne (Mike) McMenomy of St. Paul, Minn., Peggy (Roger) Welty of Astoria, Ore., Susan (Philip) Stevens of Plattsmouth, Neb., and Sharon (Tom) Fries of St. Paul, Minn.; 25 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Harold E. Griffin, 80, a former Marshalltown resident, died Friday evening, March 24, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

There will be a mass of Christian burial on Tuesday, March 28, at 10:30 a.m. from St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Marshalltown, with Fr. Jim Miller celebrating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown.

He was born July 6, 1925, in Charles City, the son of Martin E. and Florence Hanson Griffin. Raised and educated in Charles City, he graduated from Immaculate Conception Schools.

On Jan. 21, 1961, at the Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford, he was united in marriage to Doris Lyman. She preceded him in death in July of 2001.

They lived in the Charles City area until they moved to Marshalltown in 1970. He began working at Fisher Controls, until he retired in 1990. Harold returned to Charles City in 2003.

His memberships included St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the UAW retirees.

Surviving Harold are two brothers and three sisters, Jess Griffin of Charles City; Everet Griffin of Charles City; Arlene Lynes of Charles City; Margret Schwickerath of Charles City; and Phyllis Bluhm of Waverly.

Also a number of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Doris, and two brothers, Lyle and Lawrence.

Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Eleanor M. Wright

Eleanor M. Wright, 82, formerly of 1807 Owen St. in Charles City, died Friday afternoon, March 24, 2006, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City, where she was a resident.


 

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 28, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St. in Charles City. Interment was in Sunnyside Memory Gardens Cemetery, Charles City.

Eleanor Maxine Wright was born May 30, 1923, at home in rural Wendell, Minn., to Carl G. and Anna (Menken) Weigand, the first born of two children. At the age of five, her family moved to the Charles City area, where continued to reside.

Eleanor attended schools near Greene, the North Powersville School and graduated from eighth grade at the Floyd County School-Riverton No. 10. She was among the graduating senior class of Nashua High School 1941.

In 1941, Eleanor also completed her "Normal Training" and began her teaching career at a variety of schools, including Butler County School and Riverton-Floyd County School. Eleanor furthered her education and received her B.A. degree from Wartburg College and taught in the elementary schools at Rudd-Rockford, Marble Rock Community School and Charles City School. She retired in 1985 after instructing education for 37 years.

On June 2, 1957, Eleanor was united in marriage to Elvin H. Wright at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Nashua. Together, they enjoyed each other’s company while traveling and dining out on Friday evenings. Her beloved Elvin, died on May 21, 2000.

Eleanor was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she served on the Altar Guild and was involved in her women’s church group (WELCA). She was also a member of the ADK Teaching Sorority and a former member of the Charles City Women’s Club.

Some of Eleanor’s interests and hobbies included tending to her vegetable and flower gardens and fruit trees, sewing, crafts, counted cross-stitching, cooking and remaining in contact with her family and friends and former co-workers and students. She embraced a lifetime of faith and the love of family and cherished friends.

Eleanor will be dearly missed by family and friends who have shared in her life.

She is survived by her daughter, Eloise and Scott Gelner of Afton, Minn.; her brother, Darrell and Jean Weigand of Nashua; her sister-in-law, Pauline King of Charles City and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Eleanor in death are her husband, Elvin H. Wright; her parents, Carl and Anna Weigand and her brother-in-law, Stanley King.
